One year on from the murder of Det Adrian Donohoe in Lordship, Co Louth Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan has called on those living in the community to stop shielding the gang who were involved.

The comments were made over the same weekend that saw a huge crowd turn out for a candlellit vigil to pay tribute to Adrian’s memory and show support for his family, friends and Garda colleagues.

The large group gathered around a plaque in honour of Adrian at the entrance to Lordship Credit Union where they paused for a moment’s reflection at 9.30pm on Saturday before walking

to St Patrick’s GAA complex.

Speaking at a press conference in Dundalk the previous day, the Garda chief said it was time for society to make a choice and that there are people both north and south of the border who were continuing to protect these people.

“There are people out there who are shielding the killers and it is not too late for them to do the right thing and tell us what they know,” said Com. Callinan, adding that the time to do it was now, before Gardaí coming knocking on their doors.

Cllr Conor Keelan has asked Dundalk Town Council to consider following Dublin City Council’s lead in tackling the ongoing problems of owners not cleaning up dog litter when out walking.

“In light of the fact that all four councils in the Dublin region have recently embraced a new anti-dog fouling initiative to handle reports of dog fouling on streets, parks and suburban roads throughout the Dublin region I propose that we adopt a similar initiative in advance of the merger of the four local authorities in this region.” urged the Newry Road

councillor.

“This is a significant problem throughout the town at present and something needs to be done to stop it. We need to increase awareness of the consequences of dog fouling throughout the region. Dog litter is also dangerous and can cause children especially to pick up diseases such as toxocariasis.” warned Cllr Keelan.

Last year Dublin City Council introduced a range of new measures to help curb the problem of dog litter and Cllr Keelan has asked Dundalk Town Council to follow their lead and introduce similar measures here.

I know they have introduced initiatives such as erecting more Anti-Dog fouling signs as well as a special hotline where incidents of dog fouling can be reported. Emotional appeal for return of rings

A Dundalk lady has appealed for the return of three rings which were accidentally left in a jacket she donated to the North Louth Hospice Shop on the Ramparts Road in early December.

The lady who wishes to remain anonymous says

that the rings belong to her friend and are of enormous sentimental value.

“This whole story began about 12 weeks ago when my friend had a fall while we were out walking in Dundalk. She was brought to the hospital and because her arm had swelling she had to take off her rings which she gave to me to

“I put them into the zip pocket of my jacket and went home and put the jacket away. In early December I was clearing out the house and decided to collect some stuff to give to the North Louth Hospice shop.

Amongst the stuff I gave to them was a pale blue waterproof jacket which was

the jacket I had my friend’s rings in”, she added.

“A few days later my friend asked me for the rings back and I immediately realised what I had done.

I knew straight away they were in the jacket I had given to the hospice and I was in complete shock. I was mortified. We went down to the North Louth Hospice

but unfortunately the jacket had been sold already.

“It’s a pale aqua blue waterproof jacket with a fur lined collar and the three rings are in a small zip breast pocket. We are appealing for anybody who bought a jacket matching this description to check the pockets and give us a call if they find the rings. They in-

clude her wedding and engagement rings and are of enormous sentimental value to her. There is a reward on offer for anybody who can help us get these rings back”, she concluded.

Two weeks ago, the home of Stephens parents, Ian and Anita who had been minding the watches for their grandchildren was broken into. The thieves stole a safe that contained the watches and immediately the family launched a campaign to raise awareness and appeal for their return.

Hastings Insurance Brokers who operate in the west of Ireland offered a cash sum for the return or information leading to the return of the watches.

Talent and fashion on show ST VINCENTS students raised the roof in DkIT at the weekend at their annual Fashionably Talented Show where they showcased an impressive variety of artistic and musical talents.

The event which is organised by Transition Year students under the guidance of their teachers Ultan Henry and Vicky Muckian featured 20 talent acts as well as the St. Vincent’s Traditional Irish group and dance act Supercrew.

Local man is spared driving ban A MAN who was described as being likely to lose his job if he was banned from driving was spared a disqualification after pleading guilty to a no insurance charge at Dundalk District Court.

Gerard Tumilty 46 Lios Dubh, Armagh Rd, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai at Lisdoo on

April 29, 2013. The court heard that he had just collected the car from a garage where it was being serviced in preparation for the NCT. It was stated that the 27-yearold father of one works as a delivery driver and it would be difficult for his employer to keep him on if he lost his licence. The

defendant’s solicitor stated that it was unlikely his client would be back before the court again.

Judge William Hamill remarked that the defendant knew he needed a licence for his job but yet he decided to get into a car and drive without insurance.

He imposed a €600 fine, taking related matters into account.

A woman who needs to drive in order to pursue a career as a commercial artist escaped a driving ban after pleading guilty to driving without insurance at Dundalk District Court.

Denise Doran of 126 Waterville Crescent, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai at Fatima Court on April 29 last year.

The court heard that Ms Doran, a self employed commercial artist, had previously held insurance on the car but it was cancelled after she missed two payments.

The 30-year-old couldn’t afford to pay for the renewal.

Solicitor Frank McDonnell asked that Judge William Hamill would spare her a disqualification as she is trying to get her business started.

She would need to drive in order to work as much of the job involves decorating shop windows.

Judge Hamill imposed a €600 fine and took into account related matters.

Dundalk man set for launch of first novel A Dundalk man is hoping to take the literary world by storm when his first novel is published at the beginning of March.

Mark Mulholland’s ‘A Mad and Wonderful Thing’ is already provoking literary attention and debate in advance of an international release ahead of its publication in Melbourne on March 3. It will also be published in London, in May 2014.

Mark, has been based in France with his family for ten years, but is well-known in Dundalk circles as the co-founder and former owner of Dundalk’s acclaimed Spirit Store and Beer Keeper.

Set amongst the streetscape and hinterland of Dundalk, ‘A Mad and Wonderful Thing’ is a story about cause, about why boys do the things they do, about motivations and conflicts, about choices

and costs.

The work is receiving diverse reactions and pre-publicity releases have divided opinions and reviews, Mark has welcomed that debate.

“My greatest fear was that no one would like it. Despite any pretension, there would have

been a kind of humiliation in that. And my next greatest fear, oddly enough, was that everyone would like it, or, as they say in Ireland, call it ‘grand.’ Nothing of merit gets universal approval. Well, as it turns out, I had nothing to fear there”, he explained.

Australian book reviewer Elizabeth Harrington stated: “I loved this book, but I think it will divide opinions.

A Mad and Wonderful Thing is an unusual but wonderful read. I enjoyed it very much, and it will stay with me.

Some, perhaps, won’t get it. Some will. That’s the beauty of literature.”

For Mark, getting to the publishing stage is a huge achievement after a lot of hard work.

“A Mad and Wonderful Thing was a long time in the making, and it needed to be to tell this tale in the round.

It was years of work, and quiet living, but first novels, in any case, take time, and much of it was learning and finding my way.

“And, in the end, all it took to get a publishing deal was hard work, persistence, sacrifice, blood, and exile”, he added.

warned that they will need to keep looking over their shoulders. He confirmed that some of the gang fled the country but are being monitored and he thanked police forces in the North, the US and Holland for their assistance in the case. “We are keeping a close eye on the target”, he warned.

Those who do come forward will be offered the highest of protection, adding that those who are threatening someone who would otherwise provide information that would help the inquiry would be dealt with severely.

“We will leave no stone unturned in protecting them”, he added.

“I will continue to ensure that all of the organisation’s resources are made available to the investigating team, for I firmly believe that Adrian’s memory is best honoured by seeing those involved in

To date the complex investigation has taken more than 4,000 individual tasks, 2,100 statements have been taken, about 400,000 hours of CCV TV has been reviewed and more than 30 searches have taken place.

Gardai commissioner assured that the investigation would continue

to be as robust as it has been for the past year but said that he could not give out a timeline on events going forward.

Speaking to the media Commissioner Callinan said that the murder had a profound impact not only on his colleagues in Dundalk, but across the Gardai.

“It had an impact not only on the lives of those he positively

affected in Co. Louth through his work, or through his involvement with the GAA community, but also country wide”, he said.

However he said the Adrian’s bereaved wife and children were upmost in his mind as they “remember a man who involved himself wholly in his family, his community, and in his job, and who ultimately gave his life in the service of them.

Our thoughts are also with all of Adrian’s family and friends, and colleagues in An Garda Síochána in Dundalk and throughout the country.”

A memorial Mass was held in the Redemptorist Church on Friday evening.

Call to deal with flooding concerns Cllr Eamonn O’Boyle has once again called on Dundalk Town council to look at ways at preventing flooding in the town and surrounding areas which potentially could affect as many as 10,000 people between residents and businesses.

This comes just two weeks after some of the worst flooding seen in Dundalk and Blackrock in years and Cllr O’Boyle says he is determined to start the process before the town council is disbanded in May. “I ask that this Council in the short time we have left as a Local Authority seek to initiate the process for the longer-term solving of our very real and present danger of widespread flooding affecting as many as 10,000 in our residents and businesses”, urged the Dundalk town council chair.

“We need to spend money now to save money in the long run” explained Cllr O’Boyle.

“Evidence from notable scientists tell us that a rise of just one metre in global sea levels would be quite disastrous as

a low lying area such as Dundalk, not to mention cities and towns throughout the world, would be threatened by catastrophic flooding”, he added.

“Unfortunately very little has been done and very little money spent over the past century to upgrade and re-enforce vulnerable areas around Dundalk.

“I know the authorities say that the funds just aren’t there but it is clear that the cost of repair after any potential flood damage will far outweigh what is spent now.

“I’ve been banging this drum for five years now and there still hasn’t been any action taken”, added the Fine Gael councillor.

Meanwhile Cllr O’Boyle has called on the town council to begin work on the long mooted coastal walk from the Soldier’s Point to Blackrock which he says would ‘do wonders for tourism in the area’.

“For me it’s a no brainer and I think we should go ahead with this project sooner rather than later”, he explained.

Junction 18 had a proud day when five of their students competed in the ‘Best of the Best’ kickboxing competition. Five juniors Louise, Callum, Dualta, Enda and Diarmuid entered the tournament for the club. For Dualta, Louise and Callum this was their first competition and

they fought unbelievably well.

For brothers Enda and Diarmuid who entered the intermediate green - purple division it was a successful day, Diarmuid fought with great heart and a huge level of skill, Enda fought his way to the final where he met a

competitor from Bray, Enda only had Gold in his sights which he securred by beating his opponent by two points.

Instructors Bernard Duffy, Ciaran McArdle and all of Junction 18 are extremely proud of all five students, they will be holding a club competition for all students shortly.

The Cathaoirleach Cllr. Declan Breathnach, and The County Manager Ms. Philomena Poole have welcomed the news that County Louth are celebrating after picking up four Local Authority Members Association (LAMA) Awards at the ceremony on January 25.

The list of honours included, The Council of the Year which was awarded to Louth County Council.

The County Manager commenting on the awards has acknowledged the key role played by staff from a number of departments in achieving such high accolades.

The role of Community advocates was also a key factor in the county’s success which is evident from the fact that Blackrock Public Park having been nominated by Blackrock Tidy Towns Group was awarded the Best Public Park.

Partnership of a wider dimension was also recognised with the Louth Economic Forum taken the honours in the Best Economic Partnership/Unit category.

The Best Energy Smart initiative by a local authority was awarded to Dundalk Town Council for the work as part of the Coxes Demesne regeneration project.

Keep-fit enthusiast found with weapon

A keep-fit enthusiast who had a ‘homemade knuckle duster’ in his possession told Gardai that the weapon was for self-defence.

Lee Robinson of 17 Long Avenue was observed by Gardai in Seatown Place at 3.15am on April 4, 2012, but he moved away in the direction of Francis St when he saw the officers.

When they stopped and searched him, they found a ‘gear part’ which Gardai believed was for use as a weapon. He told them it was for self-defence.

Solicitor, Sean T O’Reilly, revealed his 21-year-old client was in possession of what he described as a ‘home-made knuckle duster’, but had never been in trouble before.

He stated that Mr Robinson was a keepfit enthusiast who wanted to pursue a career in the regulated security industry and that a conviction would not be helpful in this regard. He asked to consider not recording a conviction.

Judge William Hamill questioned what steps the defendant had taken in relation to his career. Mr O’Reilly pointed out that his client was planning to undertake a course but was waiting until this matter had been dealt with.

In convicting, the judge also imposed a €250 fine. Mr O’Reilly asked for recognisances to be fixed in the event of an appeal.

A programme of events is being developed to celebrate Louth County Museum’s 20th anniversary. As well as a special event in March, the museum is developing plans for workshops, an exhibition and conference to mark the 20 year milestone.

Made a foolish mistake

A man whose daughter became agitated as she was late for a school test admitted making a foolish error in driving without insurance.

The court heard that Mark McLoughlin, 121 Lisduff, Dundalk, normally sent his children to school by taxi but on June 7 last year the taxi was late.

His daughter became agitated so he decided to drive but was stopped by Gardai at Marshes Avenue.

A MAJOR initiative aimed at increasing fire safety in homes in Louth was launched on Thursday last week when the Community Smoke Alarm Scheme in Dundalk Fire Station with local councillors and Louth County Council Fire & Rescue Service was announced.

The scheme is a first of its kind in the area and funds the installation of smoke alarms in vulnerable households nationwide (excluding local authority housing.)

Gribben, explained that the scheme aims to identify vulnerable households and when no alarms are fitted.

“It allows us to arrange for the supply and, where necessary, the installation of the self-contained smoke alarms. This year Louth County Council Fire & Rescue Service will be assisting with the scheme as part of their new Community Fire Safety Strategy which targets individuals and communities most at risk from fire”, she explained.

Speaking after the event Cllr Declan Breathnach commended

the Fire Services in the Council for leading the way in terms of Fire safety.

Louth Fire Services are among the first in the country to make a decisive shift from a largely part time work force to a predominantly full time workforce. This allows the fire personelle to go out into the community and focus on prevention.

Man had been drinking through the night Talk on Boglands A man who had been drinking through the night lashed out after he mistakenly believed he had been locked in the toilet of a restaurant.

As a result, Brian Maughan of 68 Barrack St, Dundalk, was fined €300 on an assault charge at Dundalk District Court.

The court was told

that on March 6 last year at the Clanbrassil Centre, the defendant, who was very drunk, ordered breakfast in a restaurant. He then went to the bathroom and when staff heard noise coming from that area, they went to investigate.

A man who is waiting on a call in order to donate a kidney to his father has been given the chance to avoid jail.

On December 18 the defendant pleaded guilty to motoring offences, and the case was adjourned for evidence of when the operation was likely to happen.

Knockbridge community is showing the way forward A new project in Knockbridge is aiming to bring the community closer together with the overall aim of improving the area and trying to make it the best community in Co Louth.

The project which kicked off in the new year hopes to strengthen community groups and maximise their potential to deliver services in the area.

The pilot project hopes to showcase how people help and support each other in the com-

munity and help families feel part of life in Knockbridge.

The hope is to develop volunteering into a way of life in Louth.

Led by the newly formed Knockbridge Community Initiative Group in association with the Louth Volunteer Centre, the first phase of the initiative is nearly complete and the organisers are calling on everyone to get involved.

The first part of the project involves an audit

of the skills within the community. The project organisers are calling on everyone over 15 years of age to complete and return one of the surveys that were sent to each household.

The surveys are not a commitment to volunteering, but are simply an effort to get a picture of the skill base in the area and to make people aware of the volunteering opportunities that they can get involved in and broaden the spectrum of choice based on

However, News and Deli owner Sonja Van Kelkeren saved the day as she decided to re-open the shop for one day only this Thursday as a thank you to her loyal customers who have supported her over the years.

Sonja said: “We just couldn’t let people down. We have loyal customers who I wanted to help out and I was only too happy to re-open the shop for them on Thursday to help them get tickets” explained Sonja.

Garth Brooks was one of the biggest stars on the planet during the 90s as he broke album sales records and became a huge attraction due to his energetic live shows, culminating in two nights in Croke Park in 1997 where he played for more than 130,000 Irish fans.

Having retired from music for much of the 2000s Brooks is now making a comeback and his two Croke Park dates this July 25 and 26 are expected to sell out in minutes.

Trish Conroy who is one of the five women sitting outside News and Deli waiting for her ticket says that she doesn’t mind at all waiting in the cold and rain and knows that it will be worth it once she gets herself a ticket.

St Brigid’s candlelight procession THE Feast of St Brigid will be celebrated with the 38th annual Candlelight Procession at 7.45pm on Saturday February 1 and organisers are calling on young people to take part.

The very popular procession will take place, irrespective of the weather, starting from Faughart Old Cemetery on the summit of Faughart Hill.

Following prayers and the Blessing of the Fire ceremony, the crowd will walk the 2km to St Brigid’s Shrine.

The Feast Day will also see Masses being celebrated in the Oratory at 10.30am, Noon and 1pm on Saturday. On the same day the Relic of St Brigid will be available for personal blessing from 11.30am to 1pm and 2pm to 4.30pm.

Lithuanian community showcase culture

By Paul Byrne The newly formed Dundalk Lithuanian Community will showcase their traditions and culture at an event which will take place in the Crowne Plaza hotel on March 1 ‘Kaziukas Fair’ will provide a platform for people to find out more about Lithuanian culture as well as inviting the local community to come along and take part in setting up stalls at the event.

Egidijus Morkunas says he hopes that people from all walks of life can come along to the Crowne Plaza to enjoy the festival.

“We are inviting everybody in Louth and surrounding areas to

take part in this grand event as we believe it is a good opportunity for the locals to explore the Lithuanian culture and traditions.

“It is our aim to organise regular and periodic meetings as well as big cultural events where we intend to invite guest speakers, musicians and performers from Lithuania. Our goal is to provide a platform for everyone to meet the Lithuanians from the Louth region as well as to invite the local communities to participate in our events to get acquainted with our culture, traditions, language and traditional foods”, explained Egidijus.

The Lithuanian community in Louth is thought to be about

1,000 strong and this newly formed group will help keep them in touch with one another as they organise more events like this in the future.

This event in the Crowne Plaza is scheduled to start at Noon and will run until 7pm with many stalls already signed up to show local jewellery, food, ornaments and even Lithuanian beer. Afterwards there will be a concert with one of the most famous Lithuanian country style musician and songwriter Virgis Stakenas.

Omeath Children await opening of new cycle path The pupils of Scoil Nh Lorcan Omeath are very busy perfecting their cycling skills in preparation for the new cycle path which is presently under construction in Omeath. Every Wednesday they meet at 9am to make the journey to school. Children from 3rd to 6th Class have received cycle training from Cuchulainn Cycling Club. Children without bicycles are encouraged to take part in the activity by walking to school.

The Oriel Centre at Dundalk Gaol will provide the setting for a night of ‘magical’ entertainment this Saturday February 1, as its hosts ‘Weaving Brigid’s Magic’, an evening of music, song, story and poetry as part of the Brigid of Faughart Festival.

Brigid was patron of Poetry and Creativity and the night will feature an array of musical and poetic talent from around the country. Performers will include locally based singer songwriters Sophie Coyle and Sean Bradley, who wowed the audience at the 2013 Festival.

Dublin-based indie folk singer songwriter Susie Q will make her first visit to Dundalk to play at the festival. From the Cavan/ Leitrim borders comes renowned storyteller Tony Cuckson, who will lead the audience on a mystical journey through their imagination. Kilkenny poet Frances Cotter, who has many local links, returns to delight the audience once again with her beautiful poetry.

Members of the Dundalk Writers Group will share their wonderful work and the DkIT Traditional Ensemble, Ceol Oirghialla will bring the night to a fitting close.

The family of the late Geoffrey (R.I.P) who died on 12th December 2013 wish to express their sincere thanks to all those who attended the wake and funeral mass and burial. Those who sent mass and sympathy cards, wreaths and flowers, those who sympathised with us and supported us through our recent sad bereavement.

A special word of thanks to the doctors and nurses and staff in the coronary unit and A&E at our Lady of Lourdes hospital, Drogheda. Thanks also to the ambulance crew, his G.P. Dr. Pascal Malone who all took great care of him.

Special thanks to his former work mates from Goss's Garage, Newry and most recently Toolfix, Dundalk, a job he loved, to friends from all over the North who travelled long journeys to pay their respects. Also teachers and pupils from his sons, Shane and Conor's schools, from Mayobridge and Warrenpoint, who formed a guard of honour at the church.

Sincere thanks to his Aunts, the Rafferty ladies who made sure everyone who called got refreshments. Without them we would have been at a loss as to what to do and they are still giving us a lot of support.

Thanks to Fr. Vinnod who celebrated the Mass and also in attendance were Fr. Griffin, P.P. Faughart; Fr. C McElwee and Fr. P. Murphy P.P. Ravensdale.

See the world from a new perspective Development Perspective’s Insight programme at Dundalk Institute of Technology has been a life changing experience for many people of all ages and backgrounds over the last seven years. It is now offering people the chance to see the world from a new perspective.

The Drogheda-based charity has been working with partner organisations in Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda and Sri Lanka on a programme that introduces people

to many of the issues we hear discussed in the media but find it difficult to relate to on a personal level. Topics like the root causes of poverty and inequality in our society and in developing coun-

tries across the world are explored in creative ways. While the 8 month part time programme is an educational journey there are no traditional classrooms. Participants discuss ideas and learn

through their experiences in a way that is often very satisfying and life changing.

The aim of the programme is to bring people together who have an interest in social justice according to Dundalk IT Student Union President Brian Fitzpatrick who took part last year and found the experience very motivational.

Driver was taking car to scrap yard

A man who was driving to a scrap yard to have a car disposed of was spared a disqualification as he required his licence for work.

Pat Gaskin of 45 Pearse Park, Dundalk, admitted the offence on June 6 at Clanbrassil St, Dundalk, but barrister, Irene Sands, told the court that because he worked a night shift he couldn’t use public transport to travel the 50 miles to his job.

She stated that while he was taking the car to be scrapped on the day, he accepts that he shouldn’t have been driving.

Judge William Hamill imposed a €600 fine but spared the defendant a disqualification, while taking other matters into consideration.
