A LOCAL family’s impressive association with the Young Scientist Exhibition continued on Friday when two more members of the clan collected awards at the prestigious competition.

Town centre set for a revamp

By Niamh Kirk Dundalk town centre is set for a revamp as Louth County Council have announced the installation of new traffic calming measures and crossings. The works which are due to commence on Tuesday January 14 focus on three areas of the town centre.

In the Market Square area traffic lights are to be reintroduced at the Earl Street /Clanbrassil St junction and a permanent lane separator along Clanbrassil St/ Crowe St is also due to be installed as is a additional drainage channel on Crowe Street junction.

company’s receiver, got the go ahead from Louth planners for a seven-screen cinema, with 1400 seats by merging units in Dundalk’s Retail Park.

But now planning permission is also being sought by the Marshes Shopping Centre for a new 7 screen cinema adjoining the Shopping Centre complex.

ahead, will be situated beside the car park and will see 213 car parking spaces lost to the build. The complex will contain 7 seven screens, two restaurants and ticket kiosks.

The planning decision from Louth County Council is due in or before February 22.

Objections to the approval of the cin-

ema in the retail Park were lodged with An Bord Pleanala and a decision is due back from them in April.

If approved the companies will have to compete heavily to capture the current cinema-going population of Dundalk town; between them the cinemas would have more than 3000 cinema seats to fill between them.

cinemas goes ahead resulting in job losses and another blow to retail the north end of Dundalk town centre.

Man charged with indecent assault

A man who is now living in England appeared at Dundalk District Court charged with indecent assault on two teenage boys.

The charges relate to assaults dating back almost 40 years and the 66-year-old appeared at court by arrangement.

The man, who can’t be named for legal reasons, made no reply when the nine charges of indecent assault were put to him after being arrested at the courthouse on Wednesday.

The charges relate to one teenager on dates in 1972 and 73, and another in 1987.

Two charges relate to another teenager at a location in County Louth in 1987.

Insp Martin Beggy said the man had presented himself to Gardai to have the matter put before the court. He had no objection to bail.

Judge Hamill remanded the accused on bail and extended time for a book of evidence to be served to March 19.

Teenager given chance to avoid a detention A juvenile who admitted breaching his bail conditions was given a final chance to avoid a detention when he appeared at Dundalk District Court.

Judge William Hamill warned the defendant that he would not be given another opportunity if he didn’t keep appointments to assess his suitability for Community Service.

“If he hasn’t kept his appointments and adhered to bail conditions to the letter, there won’t be any debate and he will serve a detention. Can I make that any clearer?”, stated the judge.

“His mother may be trying hard but she has failed and it may not be her fault. I don’t know if

he is deserving of this or not, but I hesitate to send someone to detention ‘This will send a message that there is an alternative. I don’t know if he wants it but if he ignores Community Service or breaches bail, he will be inside”, he added.

The defendant had been given bail at his last appearance on December 18 and the court heard that he had been complying with the conditions up to Christmas, but had lapsed a number of times since.

One of the breaches occurred on January 6 this year when he was observed by Gardai on patrol at 6.25pm (which was outside his

curfew), in the company of an individual he was not allowed to associate with under bail conditions. He has also failed to sign on at the Garda Station on a number of days.

Judge Hamill remarked that he had put something in place after the defendant had pleaded guilty to charges before him, but he didn’t appear interested.

His solicitor stated that the defendant had spent eight weeks in custody and did not want to return to custody. He was anxious to have another chance.

The judge agreed to explore the possibility of Community Service as he adjourned the case to January 23.

Hairspray, The Musical is back

Transition Year students preparing for Hairspray

The Transition Year students of St Louis secondary school are taking hair to new heights as they prepare to launch their version of the hit musical “Hairspray” in March.

Based in the quiet 1960s American city of Baltimore, Hairspray is the story of one Tracy Turnblad, and her dreams of dancing on television on The Corny Collins Show, alongside local smooth-talking dreamboat, Link Larkin.

All of the 70 Transition Year students are taking

part in this sizeable production, on and off stage with the help of three dedicated teachers; Kate O’Byrne, Elaine Byrne and Aine McEnaney.

Laoise Grennan is young Tracy Turnblad, with Éabha Short as Velma Von Tussle, Rachel Byrne as Corny Collins and Mary O’Hare as Tracy’s rather large mother Edna Turnblad.

Leading lady Laoise Grennan has taken on the role of Tracy brilliantly, making it her own and thriving in the spotlight.

She has had previous experience on stage and

uses this to her advantage when performing in front of the crowds.

Her confidence and stage presence make her the perfect choice for the bubbly and outgoing Tracy Turnblad.

As well as performing on stage, the students are also helping out behind the scenes by painting their own sets and backgrounds under the guidance of art teacher Ms McEnaney.

They are providing props to give the set a more 1960s vibe, gathering costumes featuring petticoats and bow-ties

and even helping to choreograph some of the dance numbers, much to the delight of head Choreographer Ms O’Byrne.

With rehearsals going on during and after school, nobody can deny that everyone involved is extremely dedicated.

The show is due to go on stage for three consecutive nights; Wednesday 12th to Friday 14th and is to be held in the Chapel Hall of the school.

Tickets will be available through the students and also through the school office closer to the show’s release date.

No, I wouldn’t really be in favour of that. I think we have enough exams to study for as it is and I think P.E is a nice break away from the more serious subjects.

No, I don’t think kids should be made waste time studying for P.E. I think it’s a pretty pointless subject to be honest.

No way, that would turn me off P.E altogether. I’d much rather enjoy my P.E classes and have fun exercising rather than having it as an exam and putting pressure on me.

Yes, I think it would be a good idea to have it as an exam subject. It sort of ties up with biology and it would be a good help for students who plan on taking physically based subjects in third level.

I think it’s a good idea. I think P.E is very important and at the

moment a lot of people don’t bother with it and make excuses to not do anything. If it were an eam they’d have to do it.

Outstanding performances by Elderly in Louth will be Dance Kids ‘Jingle All The Way’ affected by cuts to grant Freda Hearty and the Dance Kids have once again exceeded expectations and delighted audiences with their Christmas show ‘Jingle All The Way’. The talented Dance Kids aged from just four years danced and sang their hearts out last weekend when ‘Jingle All The Way’ took to An Tàin Theatre stage and brought the house down; with delighted audiences declaring it “the best show yet”.

With two sold out shows, the audience enjoyed a tear jerker excerpt from Annie as well as many favourites such as Jessie J, One Direction, The Blues Brothers, Queen and many Christmas classics such as Frosty the Snowman and White Christmas.

After five months of hard work and two show-stopping performances from the Dance Kids an exhausted but delighted Freda Hearty said “I am absolutely thrilled with how well the shows turned out, all the kids and the Dance Kids crew worked so

The elderly in Louth will be among the many people nationwide to be affected by the Government’s decision to change the criteria for the housing aid grant.

The age for applicants to the housing aid grant is to be raised from 60 to 66, and the maximum payment cut from €10,500 to €8,000.

Eamon Timmins from Age Action fears the moves will make it much harder for old people to stay in their own homes.

“Age Action is concerned at the changes to the housing adaptation grant schemes for older people and people with a disability, which it believes will hit those on lowest incomes the hardest.

“While the intention of the review was to make the schemes more focused and targeted at

those most in need, the impact is that changes to Housing Aid for Older People scheme mean that funds will be spread more thinly, with the poorest of older people now receiving a reduced maximum grant while also being expected for the first time to pay for a percentage of the work”, noted Mr Timmins.

“The changes to the Housing Adaptation Grant for Older People, Housing Aid for Older People and the Mobility Aids Grant Scheme have come into effect since January 1, without any public announcement.

“In addition to the reduction in the level of the maximum grant and changes to the income bands for the level of grant, Age Action is concerned that the age eligibility for the Housing Aid for Older People is being increased from 60 to 66 years old.

This will result in people who previously could have applied for Housing Aid for Older People now being faced with waits of up to six years to be eligible for grant aid towards making their homes habitable – eg replacing heating systems/windows/doors”, explained the spokesman.

“The changes in eligibility for the schemes are significant and must be publicly communicated in a clear and concise manner.

Age Action is concerned that the changes only came to light as a result of a document for local authority officials which was leaked to the media.

The Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government needs to issue a comprehensive statement on the changes.” concluded the Age Action spokesman.

Longwalk junction the pavement will be dropped at the kerb and a zebra crossing is set to be introduced. A new speed ramp is also and a pedestrian gateway is planned for the crossing at the Magnet going toward Market Square.

While on Market Square itself a new bench and bins will be introduced at the back of the Tourist Office to

divert pedestrians away from the step feathering.

Louth County Council say that the works have been in planning but were postponed until after Christmas so as not to conflict with seasonal shoppers. The works are expected to take about five weeks in total with most of the works taking place on the pedestrian areas.

Man stole television from supermarket

A Dundalk man who stole a television from a supermarket was given a chance to avoid jail if he paid compensation.

Jason McDonagh of 115 Ashbrook, Tom Bellew Ave, was told that if he paid €359 that Judge William Hamill would consider 120 hours Community Service in lieu of three months in prison.

The court heard that on September 2, 2010, Mr McDonagh, who had 104 previous convictions, took a television from Aldi, Rampart Rd. The property was not recovered.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client, who had sold the television, was willing to do Community Service.

Judge Hamill adjourned the case to March 3 and stated that if the compensation was not paid, he would be deemed not suitable for Community Service.

Storm damage costs set to reach €225k

COUNTY Louth suffered an estimated €225,000 worth of damage during the high tide and storms at the beginning of January.

The local authorities have highlighted a number of areas that were in need of repair across the county following the flooding.

In Blackrock, works will take place on the footpaths and the walls will be repaired. On the Ballagan Road the road itself will be repaired after concrete flood defence barriers washed into a large hole that appeared during the high tide.

Flood barriers, coastal defences and the access road embankment at Gyles Quay were also damaged as were areas along the Castletown River. In the Mid Louth area rock armour repairs will take place in Salterstown, while there

will be embankment repairs in Dunany and Roadstown.

In south Louth, Big Strand Clogherhead will have Sea Wall Repairs and Donor’s Green will have Estuarine Embankment Repairs.

Funds are being made available by the Irish Government and through the EU and the Council have said that they ”continue to engage with the various Government Departments in regard to funding for flood and sea defences.”

In addition they said that “annually we seek funding for areas where the risk of flooding is apparent.

Grant allocations for such work in the past have been at a minimum but Louth County Council continue to work with Department inspectors in putting forward Louth’s case for increased funding in this area”.

Huge support forces Danny to rethink Danny Fitzpatrick from Fitzpatrick’s Bar and Restaurant has said he is reconsidering the cancellation of his charity fundraising events following the overwhelming support shown in the past week.

In the past seven days the popular local restaurant, renowned not only for its food but also more recently the extraordinary festive events, has received countless messages, emails and phone calls encouraging them to continue their events.

It began on December 8 when a customer wrote a negative review of an experience in the restaurant over Christmas on the tourism website Trip Advisor.

The post was not up long before other Trip Advisor users responded with five star reviews

and expressed surprise at the negative comments.

Mr Fitzpatrick said that he and his family had been deeply hurt by the comments and responded on the company’s Facebook and Trip Advisor page.

In the statement Mr Fitzpatrick refuted claims made in the complaint but said that after considering the negative comments had “taken the very sad decision to cancel all future events at Halloween and Christmas”.

The company raised €7,014 for Temple Street children’s Hospital at their Halloween event and €645 for AWARE at Christmas as part of a four year plan to introduce events in the restaurant.

“I replied to the comments due to the insult to me and my family.

“I felt that I had to write it, I wasn’t looking for support be-

cause the people who know me and know Fitzpatrick’s would not need an explanation”, said Mr Fitzpatrick.

The post was up on the company’s Facebook page only minutes when it was being shared and messages of support for the restaurant and their events came pouring in.

Mr Fitzpatrick said that he has had phone calls of support from all over the world and from people who visited and ate there years ago. “I couldn’t believe it”, he said.

Danny Fitzpatrick said he has not yet made a decision on whether to continue with the events in 2014, but following the outpouring of support and with a meeting arranged with the charity he supports, he intends to make up his mind in the next two weeks.

A man who pleaded guilty to a public order offence was convicted and fined €200 at Dundalk District Court.

Ronan Hamill of Whiterath, Dromiskin, admitted the offence which took place at River

Lane, Dundalk, on November 1 last year.

On that date, Garda were attending an incident when they observed Mr Hamill who was intoxicated and unsteady on his feet. He was arrested and taken

to the Garda Station.

It was stated that the defendant had a previous conviction for public order and his solicitor stated that he was simply drunk on the occasion and apologised for his behaviour.

Local boxers in winning form Amy Broadhurst and Davy Maguire representing Dealgan boxing club both got off to winning starts last weekend at the National Open Youths and Novice Championships in the National Stadium in Dublin.

Amy who is looking to capture an amazing ninth Irish title was given a tough opening draw as she took on former World Championship bronze medallist Austeja Auciute in her Quarter Final bout. In a close contest Amy showed great courage and skill to edge out her Donegal opponent 2-1 to progress to this weekends semi final.

Amy is hoping to go all the way at these championships as

the winner will get to represent Ireland at the World Championships in Bulgaria in April.

Her father and coach Tony Broadhurst was pleased with Amy’s opening bout but refused to look further than her next fight this weekend.

“These are important fights for Amy as if she wins she gets to fight at the World’s in April.

However the standard is so so high at the Nationals and she is going to have to be at her very best to win it. Her opening fight was tough against a former World bronze medallist and her semi doesn’t get any easier as she goes up against a World Champion from Mayo.” he explained.

“We’ve moved her up a weight division which is good for Amy as it means she can eat a little more than she usually does as she gets ready for her fights!

She’s trained well and is looking forward to her Semi so hopefully she can get the job done and reach another national final.” he added.

Meanwhile David Maguire outfought Antrim’s Tiernan Bradley to set up a Semi Final in the Novices section this Friday evening. Bradley won last years novice final so it was a notable victory for Maguire and he’ll be looking to continue his good form as he aims to make it all the way to the final next weekend.

She contacted the council to say she had possession of the bike.

On May 26 a woman called to her house to say the bike belonged to her daughter but was told that she had to call the council.

Soon after, the woman returned with her former partner, Richard Gorman, and his brother, Mark.

Views were exchanged between the parties before the brothers went to the back of the house and forced open the lock to get into the shed.

They looked through the bikes that were in the shed but were unable to find the girl’s bike.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that the bicycle was at that time in another house and was returned to the Gardai afterwards.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that the actions of the men were bewildering and added that

there were a number of alternatives open to them.

He explained that while the men were charged with theft, no items were taken away and that the charge related to the removal of a bike from the control of the owner while looking through them in the shed.

“The mother of the child should have gone to the Gardai following her initial conversation with the woman”, he said, adding that the offences were at the lower end of the scale.

Mr McDonnell stated that Richard Gorman, the father of the child, is an epileptic who doesn’t enjoy good health. He was aggravated at the time and regrets his actions. He added that in light of Mark Gorman’s previous case, his actions were ‘bewildering’.

A sum of €2,000 was paid in compensation to the injured party.

A man who was looking to recover his daughter’s bicycle broke into a shed along with his brother to try to retrieve it.

Richard Gorman, along with his brother, Mark, of 44 Avenue Road, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to charges of criminal damage, theft and trespass at Dundalk District Court arising from the incident at 28 Bothair Na Feirme, Blackrock Road, Dundalk on May 26 last year.

As a result, Mark Gorman, who had been given a four-year suspended sentence in February 2012 was returned to appear back at Dundalk Circuit Court on January 14, while Richard Gorman had his case adjourned to February 5 at the district court.

The Irish Cancer Society have donated €90k to Louth County Hospital to support bowel cancer screening in the county.

The funding will be used to further the development of the bowel cancer screening programme by purchasing equipment that will help develop colorectal symptomatic and screening services.

The National Cancer Screening Service (NCSS began offering free bowel cancer screening to people aged 60 to 69 last year and it is planned to extend the screening to those aged 55 to 74 soon.

The donation means that Louth County Hospital will be in a position to support the increased demand for colonoscopies arising from the BowelScreen programme. With it three video colonoscope machines will be bought.

Margaret Swords, Louth/Meath Hospital Group General Manager said that the funding was greatly appreciated. “ More than 2000 peo-

ple are diagnosed with Bowel Cancer in Ireland each year and about 900 people die from it making it the second most common cause of cancer

death in Ireland.

One of the reasons for this is that more than half of people with bowel cancer are diagnosed

in the later stages of the disease which means that they require more complex treatment and have a poorer chance of survival.

However bowel cancer is treatable if caught in time and screening helps detect it in its early stages and the screening means that fewer people will develop the disease in the first place, that more of those who do can be treated more successfully and that fewer people will die from it.

The Irish Cancer Society advises people who are concerned about bowel cancer or who have been experiencing bowel symptoms for four weeks or more to contact their GP immediately.

People who are concerned about bowel cancer can also speak in confidence with a specialist cancer nurse by calling the Irish Cancer Society’s National Cancer Helpline on Freefone 1800 200 700.

The Operation Transformation National Walk takes place this Saturday January 18 and Louth Local Sports Partnership has organised a walk in Dundalk. The walk starts at 11am leaving form Dowdallshill GC and AC, Newry Road and is approximately 4km long. Light refreshments will be served in Dowdallshill hall after the walk. Concerns rising over ambulance cover Dundalk Leader 15th January 2014

Concerns are rising over the provision of emergency services in the North East as ambulance cover falls back into the spotlight.

Louth TD Gerry Adams has described the current level of ambulance provision as in adequate and said that the cuts to ambulance cover has been significant.

He said at times there is only one ambulance available in Dundalk and one in Drogheda,

and the TD has been told rostering arrangements and a preference to drop crews if someone is off due to illness means fewer ambulances on call.

“This is about patient care. HIQA therefore needs, as a matter of urgency, to carry out a thorough investigation into the ambulance service across the state; how it is structured; response times; rostering arrangements; and consultation with staff”, stated Mr Adams.

In response the HSE have said that they had an 80% success rate in responding in under 19 minutes to the two categories of potentially life threatening calls they get.

They have also stated that there are ten ambulance stations in the former North East Area; located in Dundalk and Ardee and Drogheda Castleblayney, Virginia, Swords, Cavan, Monaghan, Navan, and Dunshaughlin. Rapid response vehicles (RRVs)

Trade fair is buzzing with creativity

The annual Trade Fair at St Louis secondary school was said to be one of the best yet, with original and unique ideas providing the most colourful and eye-catching display that the school has seen in quite some time.

The mini companies are a chance for students to show off their entrepreneurial skills and see if their ideas would work as a possible business.

On the day of the trade fair the students are judged on their efforts, and only four companies from each school make it to the next stage.

Some examples of the companies on display were Get Creative, Very

Get Creative is run

Duffy and Zara Matthews Ryan.

They sell hand-made shaped crayons in various shapes, sizes, themes

and colours. The company has expanded to selling outside of school and even overseas, with a constant stream of or-

ders coming in.

Very Vintage is run by Emma Duffy and Éabha Short. Their product is old fashioned, vintage

ornaments, such as candle holders and beautiful sweet jars, hand decorated with lace and satin.

They were one of the four companies to make it through to the next stage, because of their fantastic display and attractive products.

Nailed It is run by Sarah Devitt, Nicole Hoey and Muna Okolo. They have set up a nail bar in the school and have been bringing nail art to the masses. They offer a huge variety of designs at student friendly prices.

Print Perfect is run by Niamh Watters, Shauna Whitmarsh, Caòimhe Watters and Mary O’Hare.

They are a company all about making stu-

dents happy. From student cards that enable the holder to get shop discounts, to a yearbook specifically focusing on Transition Year memories, they certainly offer a lot to their customers.

This is just an example of the many brilliant mini companies that took part in the annual Trade Fair.

Other schools such as St Vincent’s and Colaiste Rís visited throughout the day, creating a real Christmas buzz, and allowing the young entrepreneurs to expand outside of the school walls.

This is really what the Trade Fair is all about; developing an idea into a business, achieving your goals and most importantly having fun.

Mark Dearey to contest European election for Green Party

GREEN Party councillor Mark Dearey has been selected to run in the European Parliamentary elections for the Green Party. Mr Dearey who is the Green Party finance spokesperson will run in the Midlands North West constituency.

The announcement was made earlier this week following the Green Party convention held in Dublin at the weekend. Green Party Leader Eamonn Ryan described the Green Party candidates as the “Dream Team for a better future.”

“We believe that by going Green, Ireland can prosper

under a new economic model. It’s in the European Parliament that we can change the rules and help make this happen”, said Mr Ryan.

Cllr Dearey will be contesting both the Louth County Council elections and the European Parliamentary elections simultaneously. Earlier this week

Cllr Dearey said that he was absolutely thrilled to be running and that the campaign would be an enormous undertaking to cover the 15 county constituency which extends from Dundalk to the Aran Islands and from Birr in Offaly to the tip of Donegal.

With respect to the Euro-

pean Election Cllr Dearey said “My primary focus will be to take part in the debate and raise awareness of the issues. We are fighting for a social Europe , a Europe of citizens not of corporations and lobbyists. I hope my presence in the campaign will see that happen, that is my primary hope.”

With respect to Environmental issues Cllr Dearey said that fracking in the Midlands would be a campaign issue.

He also intends to address the problem in the financial services sector.

The European Parliamentary elections take place between May 22 to 25 2014.

St Vincents and Bush celebrate success

ST VINCENT’S Secondary school have a rich history in the Young Scientists exhibition and they impressed the judges again this year with two prize winning projects and two projects which were highly commended.

Rachael Ni Dhonnachadha wowed the judges coming second in the individual intermediate section with her project

which analysed the effects of wrist rotation and elbow flair on a punches velocity in competitive karate.

Rachael who took four months to complete her analysis is a keen karate student herself which helped her when compiling her results.

“I go to karate classes in Dublin so I was interested in the analysis for my project and I was delighted that the judges gave me second place in my category”,

explained Rachael.

Sarah Begley’s project also caught the judges’ eyes as she asked the question ‘Does restless legs syndrome really exist?’. Sarah was awarded third place in the junior individuals for her efforts.

Aiveen O’Callaghan, Aoibhín Sally and Grainne Smyth were highly commended for their project ‘Home brewers beware!

The effect of hot press temperature variation and

bottle storage conditions on variations in alcohol concentration’ while Aoife Begley’s project ‘Slip or Non Slip? That is the question’ was also highly commended by all judges.

Meanwhile, Bush Post Primary school also caught the eyes of the judges with Conor Ryan, Stephen Lynch and Stephen Woods highly commended for their project ‘Moo BootProtective Boots for Cows’.

Talented Begley family have the Young Scientist X Factor From Page 1 for her unique invention which measured magnesium levels in milk as an aid to help prevent bovine grass tentany. Meanwhile Aoife‘s sister Michaela was highly commended in 2009 for her project: “Turbo - fan jet engines open rotor vs conventional”.

As well as the four Begley’s that are currently studying in St Vincent’s past pupil Ashling was also successful at the exhibition in re-

cent years with her project which examined stars in the Milky Way highly commended by judges in 2011.

Not to be outdone by the girls’ another cousin, CBS student Conor Begley impressed the judges back in 2011 with his project which sought to find a solution to wheelie bins spilling out onto the street after falling over in strong winds, or being knocked over by vandals.

The girls were unable to pinpoint

exactly why so many Begleys had done so well in the exhibition in recent years but all agreed that a love for science was definitely a main factor.

“There are no scientists are anything like that in our families but we’ve always been drawn to science and enjoyed the subject which helps when you’re working on projects like these”, explained Rachael.

“We have a great science lab and

our teachers have been a great help as well. I suppose it’s a bit unusual to have so many from the one family doing well at the exhibition but there won’t be anybody to add to the list next year as there are no more Begleys coming behind us for a while yet.

“Our cousin David is probably the next in line but he’s still only young so it could be a few years before he’s thinking about heading to Rachael Ni Dhonnachadha pictured with her Young Scientist project the exhibition”, added Michaela.

Dundalk character honoured in song A well-known Dundalk character has been honoured in song by a singer who is planning a special concert in town this year.

As a young boy growing up in County Fermanagh Eugene Doonan dreamed one day of becoming a country and western singer. Taking his inspiration from legendary Irish Country songwriter Johnny McCauley, Eugene released his debut CD back in 2003 entitled ‘Brand New Mr Me’.

Currently based in Hertfordshire, England,

Eugene is planning a short tour of Ireland this summer in which he will stop off at Dundalk to show off his considerable back catalogue. There is a Dundalk connection to Eugene’s music through a new song he has written entitled ‘Herald/Press’. which is an affectionate piece of music about well known Dundalk paper seller Tommy Grimes.

Tommy sold newspapers around Dundalk for over 30 years and his familiar cry of ‘Herald/Press’ became well known around the streets of Dundalk over

the years. Eugene heard about Tommy through his good friend Johnny McCauley who lived in Dundalk for a spell many years ago.

Having heard Tommy’s story he was inspired to write a song about the well known Dundalk newspaper

seller.

A popular figure on the London Country scene, Eugene will bring three albums worth of material to Dundalk in the summer as he embarks on a tour of the country. Further details on times and venues will be released shortly.

American legend on tour Award winning singer/ songwriter, Max T. Barnes, announced that he will be appearing at the TLT in Drogheda as part of a monthlong tour of Ireland.

Barnes, who has written and published 33 No 1 country hits in America, and has had over 20 million records sold

worldwide, is elated to bring his music to fans overseas.

The Grammy nominee has had songs recorded by Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Jamey Johnson, Lee Ann Womack, Tammy Wynette, Conway Twitty, Hank Williams Jr.,

‘CLANCY’ is a name synonymous with the best of Irish music and family bands. So when the next generation of musicians bearing this name take to the stage it is worth taking the time to listen.

Donal Clancy, son of Liam Clancy from the Clancy Brothers, is coming to Dundalk’s Spirit Store, this January 19. Since being given his first guitar at 8 years of age, Donal

has had an illustrious international career and has developed into to an acclaimed guitarist, singer and performer. Much of his years performing has been overseas, with a stint as a resident guitarist in Hong Kong to becoming a founding member of Danu. Donal later left the group in the mid nineties to tour with his father and cousin, Robbie O’Connell and was a member of the

Irish America supergroup Solas before he released his first solo album in 2006.

‘Close to Home’ was welcomed as a masterpiece of the genre, but Donal was closer again to home when he returned to Ireland in 2009. After the death of his father, he has kept the tradition of the Clancy’s alive in his performances.

Good Vibrations The Good Vibrations keep on rolling as the film, some of which was shot in Dundalk, last week received a BAFTA nomination. The film’s writers were jointly nominated for the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer Award.

Good Vibrations tells the story of Terri Hooley, the godfather of the Belfast Punk

movement. Parts of the movie were filmed in Dundalk’s Broughton Street which the producers thought to be reminiscent to Belfast in the 1970s. The Spirit Store prior to its renovation was also one of the local filming locations and a number of people were featured as extras in the Spirit Store’s scenes.

the NEW SEAT LEON CUPRA

SEAT have announced details of their new super hot Leon Cupra and Cupra 280.

The SEAT Leon Cupra and Cupra 280 are powered by a 2.0 TSI turbo petrol engine, with the choice of power output 265PS and 280PS (model dependent).

Both engines deliver 350 Nm of torque between 1,750 rpm through to 5,300 rpm.

All versions are limited to a top speed of 249kph(155mph), with the Cupra 280 with DSG transmission capable of 0 to 100kpn(62mph) in 5.7 seconds, or 5.8 seconds with the six-speed manual gearbox. CO2 emissions and fuel consumption are the same for both variants, 149 g/ km and 6.6L/100km (44.1 mpg NEDC combined) manual and 155 g/km and 6.7L/100km (42.2 mpg NEDC combined) DSG. The 265PS unit is only available in the 3-door SC Cupra with manual transmission and is capable of 0-62 mph in 5.9 seconds, where the 280PS variant is avail-

able in both the 3- and 5-door models, and there is the choice of DSG or manual transmissions.

The Leon Cupra range features a bespoke DCC dynamic chassis control with a front-axle differential lock. The DCC system is more sensitive than the Leon FR’s set-up and is capable of adapting

the chassis characteristics to the prevailing conditions in a matter of milliseconds. The differential lock which is hydraulically actuated and electronically controlled allowing up-to 100 per cent of the power to one wheel to counteract torque steer.

The ESC system is within the

control of the driver and can be deactivated in two stages – the first stage deactivates the traction control and puts the ESC into sport mode, permitting greater yaw angles where the second stage deactivates the ESC completely.

The Leon Cupra features a be-

spoke front end, with its large air intakes and full-LED headlamps.

There is a rear skirt with a diffuser effect and the two oval end pipes. The alloy wheels are exclusive to the Cupra, there are red brake callipers and tinted side and rear windows.

The 280 Cupra gains 19-inch

wheels with a titanium paint finish, plus the Aerodynamic Pack, which comprises of a spoiler on the rear roof edge. There is Cupra lettering on the brake callipers and black exterior mirror housings.

There is a Cupra sports steering wheel, aluminium pedals and entry sills. The sports seats are finished in dark grey Alcantara with white stitching. Black fullleather upholstery is an option with white stitching.

Standard equipment over the FR model includes 18-inch alloy wheels, full-LED headlights, DAB digital radio, SEAT Media System Plus, aluminium front door sill trims with Cupra logo, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights.

The Leon Cupra 280 gains Satellite navigation, 19-inch alloy wheels, gloss black mirror caps, black exterior mouldings and frames, black rear roof spoiler, red brake callipers with Cupra logo, and black interior inserts.
