ONLY a matter of weeks after Louth was painted pink to welcome the Giro d’Italia, the county has turned a definite shade of green on the political front after Sinn Fein emerged as the real winners in the local elections. The party fielded a total of 11 candidates and came within a whisker of getting all elected, with ten winning seats on the new council while JJ Quigley just missed out by two votes. Independent candidate Maeve Yore also had reason to celebrate after causing one of the surprises of the election when she comfortably picked up a seat in Dundalk South. A Dundalk schoolgirl is set for the trip of a lifetime after being selected as one of five students from Ireland to take part in a much sought after youth summer camp in the USA.
