DUNDALK’S exceptional efforts in welcoming the Giro D’Italia have been applauded by the event organisers.

“It went beyond our expectations” said Pat O’Shaughnessy from Cuchulainn CC who was instrumental in seeing the Giro route pass through Dundalk.

Pat was in one of the cars travelling into Dundalk and got an active on-the-road view of the town as thousands lined the streets to welcomes the riders.

“We know the people of Dundalk are great but we were really blown away. It was just amazing,” he said.

There were huge crowds at every juncture: hundreds in Kilcurry, thousands in Forkhill and Dundalk as well as more along the Dublin-bound route. “Every single person should be so proud

His sentiments were echoed by tourism officer Sinead Roche who said that Dundalk received comprehensive media coverage because of the spectacle that was

munity coming out and supporting it that really shone through on the day,” she said.

“The level of exposure was huge and it means that Dundalk is now a destination for cycling tourism and holidays. People will want to come and cycle

the Giro route”, she said.

It will also help attract other major events to the area too.

“Another Giro won’t be coming back soon but it means that we have shown that Dundalk is a real contender to host big events. We stood out and showed the success of the partnership between the community and busi-

nesses and gave a great impression of openness and friendliness. Everybody did their bit and everybody should be proud,” she added.

While cycling has

been enjoying a lot of popularity in recent years the Giro has encouraged a few more people to get on their bikes.

Mr O’Shaughnessy said

that even during the lead up to the Giro weekend the club had begun to receive calls on membership and cycling information.

Great competition for Transition Year Triathlon

The third annual Louth Transition Year Triathlon took place on Thursday May 1 and once again it provided great competition between local students and schools.

The event, which was organised by Louth Local Sports Partnership, the Louth P.E. teachers network and An Garda Síochána, saw 156 students representing eight schools from throughout the county compete in both team and individual events.

The event took place at St. Marys, Drumcar and competitors were required to complete a 200m swim, a 9k cycle and a 3k run. Schools involved were: St. Marys, Dundalk; Our Ladys College, Greenhills Drogheda; St. Louis, Dundalk; Scoil Ui Mhuiri, Dunleer; Bush Post Primary; Drogheda Grammar School; Dundalk Grammar School; De La Salle College, Dundalk After some fine performances and excellent racing, the prizes

Gardaí are appealing for information after the body of 35-year-old Keith Byrne was found in Carnalough near Louth Village.

Mr Byrne was found at around 4.40am on Sunday morning and it is believed that he was hit by a motorist.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and

was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.

Gardai wanted to see the children who were upstairs in a locked bedroom, and one of the officers was punched at the top of the stairs by the defendant.

After they returned downstairs the defendant used a pram to push back the Gardai and then bit one on the arm. She dropped to the ground and bit another

Solicitor, Conor Breen, stated that his client had intervened as she didn’t want her son’s children removed by members of the HSE who were also present.

He added that the children have since been returned.

Mr Breen stated that the defendant should not have got involved but that her paternal instincts had taken over and that the 63-year-old had apologised for her behaviour.

Judge says man’s claims in mitigation don’t add up A man who pleaded guilty to causing damage to shutter doors at a car park was told that his plea of mitigation didn’t add up and was given time to produce evidence to back up the claims he was making.

Frank Brassil of Main St, Collon, admitted that his vehicle had caused €636.50 worth of damage to the roller shutter door of an underground car park at Tain Court, Bridge St on June 21, 2012. He also pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to provide information on the driver who was not insured at the time.

The defendant, who works in the motor trade, told Dundalk District Court that, along with another man, he went to the car park to collect a car he was buying from a woman who lived there.

The pick-up truck, which was being driven by the other man, was too big to go in the entrance so the woman selling the car opened up the exit door. However, as the truck reversed in the

exit a sensor automatically activated the shutter doors to close.

They managed to get out by pushing the door up and the men left the scene as the woman, who was renting accommodation didn’t know who to contact. The Gardai later identified the defendant on CCTV. Solicitor for the defendant, Alison Quail, stated that the driver was not insured on the policy at the time but that he had been added at a later date. She admitted that he should have been named on the insurance but had made an attempt to rectify this going forward.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that the defendant had provided Gardai with the name of the driver but had not provided an address or phone number. The solicitor stated that an address had been provided, but that her client didn’t have a phone number.

Judge William Hamill questioned why Mr Brassil would plead guilty to not providing information, it he didn’t have the

information to give. Ms Quail stated that he was simply trying to get rid of the matters as soon as possible.

When Judge Hamill asked why the woman who sold the car was not in court to give her version of events, he was told that the defendant didn’t know the woman and didn’t have any contact details for her as he didn’t get a receipt for the car.

Judge Hamill asked what would have happened if the car was stolen and suggested that she could be traced very easily if she was the registered owner of the car. Mr Brassil said that he didn’t know the registration of the car.

The judge then summarised that the defendant had “purchased an anonymous car from an anonymous lady with an anonymous address using an anonymous driver”, and suggested that the mitigation didn’t add up.

He adjourned the case until May 21 to allow the defence provide evidence in mitigation.

Fane Bridge Macra na Feirme members have had a fantastic few months with lots more to look forward to in the coming weeks.

Fane Bridge Macra got February off to a tremendous start by hosting a Table Quiz in Cluskeys of Little Ash which was extremely well supported. Another exciting night for Fane Bridge in February was at Togher’s UBET Night. After fighting off stiff competition from the other Louth clubs, Fane Bridge members, Frank McGeeney and Tara McEnteggart were selected to represent the county at the Mr Personality and Blue Jean Country Queen Festivals respectively. The Mr Personality Festival recently took place in Kilkenny.

On the sporting front, Fane Bridge members competed in the County Round of the Volleyball and Basketball in Tullyallen.

Call for councillors to give up the junkets

By Niamh Kirk LOUTH County Councillor Tomas Sharkey is calling on his colleagues to give up going on junkets if they are re-elected this May 23.

Fein The Sinn Councillor says he wants to see an end to junket culture.

“Some councillors have had a right jolly time travelling to tourist spots like Kilkenny, Waterford, Tralee, Donegal, Killarney and

Inchydoney Island at the expense of the public. This election is the right time for them to turn a new leaf and commit to ending the junket culture”, he said.

The expense funds pay for travel and accommodation costs at conferences and events throughout Ireland.

Taking aim at Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael he said that the two parties are “the architects and administrators of

the extra taxes the public face. It is now time they came clean, took a pledge and stayed away from the junket culture they have enjoyed up to now.”

The Louth County Council expense payments over four years show that there has already been a significant reduction in the volume of the councillors claiming and the amount they are claiming for.

In 2010 there was approximately €58k

in expenses paid out to 18 councillors with payments ranging from €150 at the lowest end to to €4,908 at the upper end.

However the level of junket participation has gone down across the board when the 2013 are compared.

Last year €14,500 was paid out to 12 councillors with the lowest payment €377, while the highest payment was €1,907.

Setanta Cup woe for Dundalk DUNDALK’S hopes of winning silverware for the first time since 2002 were washed away with the rain as Sligo Rovers edged a tight contest in Tallaght on Saturday evening.

Roughly 2,000 Lilywhite supporters made the trip to Tallaght to cheer on Stephen Kenny’s men but they were left disappointed as Paul

O’Conor’s early strike proved to be the only goal of the game.

Dundalk had most of the play after that early goal and went close to grabbing an equaliser on a number of occasions towards the end of the opening half.

However in increasingly difficult conditions chances became more and more

scarce.

The last five minutes of the game were somewhat farcical as the growing amount of surface water and relentlessly heavy downpour made the ball almost impossible to pass as it got stuck in the mud as both sides struggled to cope in the horrendous conditions.

Dundalk have a chance

to exact revenge on Sligo on June 6 in Oriel Park as they have been drawn to play them in the FAI Cup. Meanwhile they will continue their quest to mount a serious title challenge as they aim to win their first league championship since 1995.

Local group Triumph in Medjugorje A local group who were inspired to bring the popular film about Medjugorje The Triumph to Dundalk have taken the pilgrimage to the religious site in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The journey to Medjugorie began last year when James McCrave heard about a new film the Triumph while on pilgrimage to Fatima. Enthused by what he heard he teamed up with Ollie Bradley and organised to bring the film to Dundalk’s IMC Cinema.

Louth volunteers are being called on to help the Irish Heart Foundation raise a half million Euro this May to save lives from sudden cardiac arrest. An average of 221 people die in Co Louth every year due to heart disease, but this number has fallen by 40% since 1990. The heart and stroke charity is calling on individuals and groups in Louth to sign up this April to give 60 minutes of their time to support Happy Hearts collections during 15-17 May or to organise their own fundraiser.

Aine has competition in the bag Carlingford and Omeath walkway to open next month

THE new walkway between Carlingford and Omeath which was due to officially open to the public on Wednesday May 14 has been put back to June. The walk, which takes in part of the old Great Northern Railway line, will link the two villages and offer stunning views of the Cooley Peninsula and Carlingford Lough.

As well as providing a spectacular view of the beautiful scenery in the Carlingford/Omeath the project will, according to local businessman and project leader Kevin Woods, also provide a major tourism boost for the area.

“This the very essence of an area working together and what can be achieved. The local landowners were extremely supportive when I approached them and understood the benefits that this would bring to the area. We are happy to continue to drive tourism projects such as these in order to get them realised”, explained Kevin.

“This area has the greatest potential in this country and we are very serious about presenting it as a complete tourism destination within the international marketplace with the assistance of the local community, landowners and county councils”, he added.

Louth County Council has been carrying out work on the walk and cycle path for several months and it is sure to prove popular in the months ahead for both locals and visitors to the area. It is expected members of the newly formed council which will be decided on May 23 will be on hand to officially open the walkway next month.

Funding of €687,000 for both phases of the work is being provided by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, under the National Cycling Network Programme, with additional funding from the Loughs Agency and Louth County Council.

A LOCAL budding artist is celebrating after coming out on top in a national competition for primary schools.

Aine O’Connor, who attends Scoil Mhuire na nGael in Dundalk, has been crowned the top artist in the Second to Sixth class category of Aldi’s national art competition for primary school children.

The competition challenged young artists to create a picture of what ‘family and food means’ to them personally, with the winning designs to be used as limited edition new prints for Aldi’s shopping bags.

This is the first year of Aldi’s bag art competition, which attracted thousands of entries from children representing primary schools across the country.

QUESTION: What’s your favourite and least favourite thing about school?

I hate everything about school so I’m going to struggle to find something I like. I suppose history isn’t too bad as the teacher is hilarious and I also like sitting beside my friend.

I love going to see my friends and I actually don’t mind a lot of the subjects. My least favourite thing about school would probably be the cliquey element.

My favourite thing about school is colouring and drawing as well. My least favourite thing is when I fall over in the school yard during play time.

I love school and my favourite thing to do is maths because I love numbers. My least favourite thing is when we have days off as I would prefer to be in school.

P.E is the best thing about going to school. I love playing sports and keeping fit and P.E is great for that. My least favourite thing about school is definitely maths.

More success for local fighters

MASF students with their medals

MAS-F recently took a strong team to compete in the Annual Drogheda Open.

Both Senior and Junior students along with instructors, took to the floor for point and continuous sparring with a plethora of medals coming back to the club as a result.

Chief instructor Wayne Rutherford along with instructors Fidelma Martin and James Shields entered their respective sections coming up against opposition from top class athletes.

James secured a well earned bronze with Wayne securing a silver against opponents several years their junior.

Senior students Amanda Crosby and Cian O Murchu each fought in both point and continuous sections securing two silver medals a piece. A great achievement for Cian who used this as his first competition.

The younger students competed in point fighting on the day with a surprise entrance from a very young Conor Sharkey. Next section up was novice for Nikita Morozs who entered his first competition ever. Nikita and Callum O’Connor fought well right through the

division, to meet each other in the finals with Nikita taking Silver and Callum securing the first Gold of the day.

Matthew McQuillan fought in a large section and after battling against opposition from various clubs, met a local competitor in the finals. Matthew never gave up and secured the Gold medal for his efforts.

Brothers Lee and Tomás Flanagan competed in the advanced divisions for their age groups and they both took home Bronze medals.

Ethan Sharkey and Conor O Murchu were the final competitors of the day in the under 10 advanced section. Conor met the current World Cup Champion in the semi-finals and took home a well earned Bronze medal. Ethan got to the finals and after a fast moving fight, secured a Silver medal.

All the competitors once again showed the level of enjoyment and commitment they have to the sport and MAS-F are honoured to have them represent them at these competitions. The next outing is the Junior KBI National Championships.

Amnesty hold flag day Amnesty International Dundalk are holding a Flag Day on Thursday May 15 in the Longwalk Shopping Centre in Dundalk.

Amnesty International receive no funding from outside sources and rely completely on fundraisers like Flag Days to keep the organisation afloat.

Fergal Kilkenny who is a group co-ordinator with Amnesty International -Dundalk Group is hoping the Flag Day can raise awareness as well as funds.

“The Dundalk Amnesty International Group have been in town for 20 years now and we’re hoping to get a few more members in

this year”, explained Fergal.

Jobs fair is an opportunity to enhance your career

LOCAL company, Servisource, is helping to boost employent in the area by giving its backing to the jobs fair in Dundalk this year as part of their Nationwide Jobs & Career Advice Campaign 2014.

The event will take place in the Marshes Shopping Centre on May 23 and is expected to prove a very popular attraction once again.

Since January of this year Servisource has visited a number of locations around the country giving presentations on CV preparation and interview tips, career coaching, using social media to find employment, advice on preparing an on-line

profile for job searching plus access to apply for roles and training that Servisource Recruitment currently have.

To-date 30 people have received employment as a result of the campaign which will continue around the country visiting Newry, Galway and Tullamore over the next few months.

In looking forward to the trade fair, Servisource CEO, Declan Murphy, outlined the benefits of hosting such events.

“The last few years have been extremely difficult. Many people have found themselves without work unexpectedly and our experience is that some are at a loss as to how to

re-enter the workforce.

“We are here to provide advice and assistance to help people on the road back to employment.

We currently have 162 vacancies nationwide across a variety of sectors, including 30 vacancies in the North East Region which we are currently recruiting for”, he explained.

The event is being supported by Senator Jim D’Arcy who believes events are very valuable.

“Events like the Servisource jobs and career campaign 2014 help to bring unemployed people together with the employers who have jobs to offer, and I wish them every success with their nationwide jobs fair”, he stated.

Glenmuir delight at Celtic FC link

Dundalk’s Glenmuir United will have exclusive access to Glasgow Celtic’s academy and development coaches for coach and player education following the announcement of an exciting link up between the two clubs.

The relationship with Celtic is in its infancy but is expected to grow each season which is undoubtedly a great coup for the Hoey’s Lane outfit..

Talks between the clubs took place with CeItic’s Soccer Academy manager Willie McNab recently speaking to Glenmuir United’s club representatives Mark Sheils (Club Secretary) and Gary Rogers, committee member.

According to Mark the Celtic representative was very impressed with what he heard from the Glenmuir duo.

“Mr McNab was very impressed with the club’s enthusiasm to revitalise grassroots football by constructing and having the best soccer facilities and in turn developing youth players in the right way.

“Glenmuir are striving to implement better coaching for all its coaches and with this partnership at Celtic the aim is to further educate both the players and coaches at the club.

Celtic will provide the club with session plans and drills for all the coaches and regularly conduct coaching seminars and programmes”, explained Mark.

“The key to success of these seminars and programmes will be participation and education. The main objective of the programmes is to make a difference to young footballers across the north east and the promotion for positive change at the under age level.

“At Glenmuir FC we place huge importance on our community work and in this new partnership it will be a major part of that.

“The young Glenmuir players are the future of the club both on and off the field, and we have seen first hand what great work soccer in the community does and how much fun the kids have at the Glenmuir FC Academy”, explained Mark.

Monastery NS, Louth champions created a unique double when they became NorthLeinster U13 5 a side soccer champions for the second consecutive year. In keenly contested finals at the MDL grounds in Navan on May 6 they faced the Meath champions, Kentstown NS, Westmeath champions, St Colmcille’s NS and Longford champions, Melview NS. Ardee opened up with a win over Melview NS, followed by a 4-3 victory over Kentstown.

In the final game against St Colmcille’s a draw or win was all that was necessary to be crowned champions but they emerged with another 4-3 win to take the title and qualify for the Leinster Final.

Irish language camp is a big hit over the school break NOW in its third year, Gael Champa took place in Smarmore Castle at the end of April with 18 children aged from five to 11 attending the Irish language camp for the week.

Activities were led through the week by Clodagh McClean,assisted by Claire McGrory, Éadaoin McClean and Ciara Byrne. The idea behind this summer camp was to encourage children to welcome and enjoy the Irish language as a fun and functional means of communication.

As the week progressed, the children were speaking more and more Irish and their confidence grew as they practiced and experienced Irish as a practical language.

The week consisted of many

activities for the children. From table quizzes to treasure hunts and relay races to ‘Capture the Flag’, fun through Irish was always the prime concern.

Throughout the course of the week, the children were divided into three teams, An Madra Gorm, Na Buaiteoirí,and Na Prátaí, and could earn points for their teams by succeeding in the activities, team spirit, good sportsmanship and through their use of the Irish Language.

The great effort of the children emerged as the teams all ended in a complete tie though each team fought hard for the place till the very end.

By the end of the week, each child went home with prizes for their excellent use of Gaeilge throughout the week.

House prices on the rise

HOUSE prices in Co Louth have begun to stabilise and some categories have begun to rise slightly according to new research. The property market sale prices increased by an average 1.4% in Co Louth last year according to research by MyHome. ie.

Louth’s prices are still about €30k lower than the median price of a three bed house nationally and remains at an average of €135,000 59% lower than its 2006 peak.

Season now open for Dundalk Cricket Club THE cricket season is now well and truly under-way for Dundalk and the two senior teams are experiencing two very different starts.

The club’s ground has undergone a major revamp for the 2014 season with the installation of an artificial pitch on the oval, this brings them in line with the majority of Leinster clubs and is a sure sign of a commitment to the game in the town.

The 2nd XI kicked things off at the start of the season with an away match to Rush 4 on Saturday April 26.

This was the 2nds first season in Division 13 having been relegated last year after spending two seasons in Division 12, but despite a brave effort it was the hosts who came out on top.

Ammunition found

An investigation is ongoing after a loaded gun and assorted ammunition was found in a house in Dundalk on May 7.

The firearms were found during the course of a search on a house in the Riverside area of Dundalk.

A 25 year old man was arrested at the scene and was taken to Dundalk Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

Steam train journey

Dundalk Railway Heritage Society is offering the opportunity to take a train ride from yesteryear on a Steam train to Dublin on Thursday May 15.

The special journey is not part of Irish Rail’s normal timetable but specially scheduled, it offers a one way ticket to Dublin for €15 on a authentic steam train.

The trip departs from Dundlak’s Clarke Station at 12.57pm on Thursday, May 15. Tickets are on sale from the Tourist Office, Market Square and Dundalk Railway Station.

The next match was at home against the much fancied Adamstown 4, and Adamstown chose to bat first and some spectacular bowling and fielding had them all out for a remarkable 39 runs.

In responding Dundalk’s second team were able to knock off the required runs in only 9.4 overs scoring 92 for the loss of only two wickets, a remarkable eight wicket win in as short a time as possible.

Things were a little tighter this time around but the 2nds managed another victory by 10 runs.

In three matches the 2nds have equalled the number of wins for the whole of last season and they currently site at number 5 out of 9 in Division 13, if things carry on at this rate they must be serious contenders for a Leinster title in 2014.

interview clinic will give people a chance to prepare answers and practice their skills.

Healthy minds brochure LOCAL parents and home school liaison teachers on the Dundalk Local Education Committee have developed new healthy minds brochure.

The leaflet will be launched on May 22 at a special event in the Redeemer NS Hall where former Governor of Mountjoy John Lonergan will speak.

“We are very concerned at the increase in mental health difficulties that people are experiencing in Dundalk and wanted to produce a fun, easy to read leaflet for families to encourage them to spend quality time together and look for help if needed.

The leaflet provides tips to try out at home and has a list of organisations that help people who are experiencing difficulties,” explained Siobhan Sheerin one of the organisers.
