David Garvey who suffers from locked in syndrome and has been pleading with the HSE to let him go home after 18 months in hospital, this week received some very good news.

David and his family have been told that the HSE have committed to a programme that will see him home in the next few months.

“We are delighted, David is thrilled, he’s delighted, he can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel now,” said Lynn Flood David’s sister.

David has been writing to the HSE bosses to end what was an effective imprisonment for him in Beaumount Hospital. He wrote repeatedly to the medical

professional and managers describing the loneliness he felt, and how much his life would improve if he were allowed home.

But repeatedly he was told that it was not possible to fund it. However following the intervention of Peter Fitzpatrick TD, a meeting was arranged with Pat Healy National Director of Social Care in the HSE. Last week at the meeting the Garvey family were told that the funding was in fact not an issue, and that they had been misinformed.

The problem was allowing David to move from a level 5 medical facility in Beaumount Hospital to a level 1, in the home, in one go.

Dundalk Tourist Office hosted an Easter themed children’s fun day and information event in the Marshes Shopping Centre on Sunday afternoon. Residents of Dundalk and the surrounding areas enjoyed a range of family friendly activities including bouncy castles, inflatable obstacle courses, Easter art work-

shops, live bands and performances by Irish dancing group Scoil Rince Ni Chonghaile.

The atmosphere was fantastic as Dundalk Tourist Officer Sinéad Roche was delighted with the response to the event.

“This event was very successful, as children enjoyed themselves, the par-

ents had the chance to look at the tourist information on display. It was a great opportunity to meet hundreds of people, and get the message out that Dundalk Tourist Office is a valuable resource for local people planning a domestic holiday.”

Action group formed to stop scramblers on mountains A packed and angry public meeting in the Carrickdale Hotel last Wednesday evening unanimously decided to form an Action Group with a clear aim set out in its name – Stop Mountain Scrambling in the Cooley Mountains and Ring of Gullion Cooley sheep farmer Matthew McGreehan was elected to chair the Action Group and he outlined the problems sheep farmers are facing due to the scramblers.

“The sheep farmers are the first guardians of the mountains and they were well represented at the meeting, particularly from around Annaverna, Dulargy and Ballymakellet which are very badly affected. One man told us of ewes breaking legs because of being deliberately chased by scramblers.”

“All this destruction is being done by a handful of irresponsible people, most of it by one gang of less than a dozen people, some of them quite young”, said Mr McGreehan.

“At our meeting we had groups representing the many hundreds of hill-walkers who treat our mountains properly, and we had elected representatives from both sides of the Border. And we had An Garda Siochana who made it clear that they have seized scramblers and recreational quads on the mountains before and will do so again. These vandals must pay, and if they are under-age it may be a matter of the parents who bought the scrambler bikes paying”, urged the newly elected chairman.

Jock McArdle said they want to mobilise all the hill-walkers who use the Cooley Mountains in particular to help combat the problem.

“The Gardai have told us clearly that photos of illegal scrambler and quad activity are useful if people log time and place and are prepared to make a statement, which we will be helping them to do. We are setting up a Facebook page where we intend to collect all the photos. Even though the scramblers often have full-face helmets, over time we will be able to identify all the dozen or so bikes that are doing most of the damage so someone will get the knock on the door.”

Ultan, from Faughart, is a pupil at Scoil Naomh Pádraig, Kilcurry and he was given the medal beforehand by Rose who told him all about the history of the piece and how it had been passed down through various O’Hagan’s over the past 60 years.

As Ultan’s grandfather Anthony explains the medal represents a piece of history for the family.

“It was worn on a confirmation rosette by Ultan's father Robert as well as his uncles Adie and David. It was then worn on its chain for confirmation by Ultan's aunt Emma, his sister

“Although the boys from one of the three schools from Faughart Parish who were confirmed in Kilcurry wore rosettes, neither of the other schools’ pupils wore them. Otherwise Ultan's medal would have been on his rosette which in itself has a family history”, explained Anthony.

During the ceremony the medal was worn inside his shirt but after the ceremony Ultan proudly wore it outside his shirt for the rest of the day .

Ciarán Byrne makes his Aussie Rules debut Louth Village man Ciarán Byrne had a successful Aussie Rules debut last weekend kicking three goals and one behind as he lined out for the Northern Blues Development side in their 29 point victory over Williamstown.

“We can’t wait, we know it will take time for things to fall into place, and that there will be dramatic changes. But the ball is rolling”, said Lynn.

She described the relief that David and the whole family feel. “You can see the stress relief on Mam and Dad, they are happier now. It is a great result”, she added.

“In four weeks’ time a care plan is to be agreed, there are a lot of challenges ahead”, said Deputy Fitzpatrick. “The main issues at present are clinical and ventilation problems. Pat Healy has promised to do his best to overcome these obstacles. And we have agreed to meet again in four weeks’ time to start the plan,” he added.

I think it should definitely be made compulsory. There are people all around the country on waiting lists for organs and it makes perfect sense to make it compulsory for all people to donate their organs after death.

I think it should be kept the way it is and left as optional. We are supposed to be living in a democracy so I wouldn’t like to see a situation where an idea like this is forced down our throats. I have no issue at all with people who want to donate their body parts but it should be their decision.

Efforts continue to save Women’s Aid SPECIAL meetings are being held this week to discuss the fate of funding for Women’s Aid Dundalk who last week announced that they were being forced to close due to considerable cuts.

Where the responsibility lies for the funding cut however is not yet clear as Louth County Council say that they were subject to Ministerial directives limiting how much they can give to refuges for homelessness caused by domestic violence.

Meanwhile the Department of the Environment who issued the directive claim that they are not responsible for direct funding and that the responsibility lies with the local authority.

A statement from the Department of the Environment read, “The Department does not fund any homeless service directly and is not involved in operational decisions; these are matters for housing authorities. The Depart-

ment’s 2014 homeless budget has been maintained at the same level as 2013 – €45 million – and regional allocations are also at the same level as 2013.”

The department spokesperson said that local authorities have been ‘encouraged’ to target their homelessness spending on certain categories, 4.4%, of the homeless budget for domestic violence refuges.

However, they refused to clarify if 4.4% was the maximum local authorities were permitted to spend, as stated by Louth County Council, or if discretion was available where necessary.

Meanwhile Joe McGuinness Chairperson of Regional Management Group of North East Homeless Forum stated that “the minister has set particular categories of maximum spend for this and domestic violence and that maximum allocation has been made with regard to domestic violence.”

Both parties are pointing to the same

directive, with Louth County Council stating that it is the cause of the cuts while the Department of the environment are stating it should not be the cause of any.

This week’s special meetings of Dundalk Town Council and Louth County Council are aimed at finding a solution and a suitable funding revenue for the refuge.

Green Party Councillor Mark Dearey said that it was vital that one, or the other or both parties should stand down on this and that while analysis among the councillors may vary, they are all united behind the idea of keeping the refuge open.

“We need to apply enough political pressure to get one, the other or both to stand down,” he said.

“It would be an enormous failure on our part if this was not resolved.

People will rightly be saying that the local political system is not worth a damn if you can’t save this”, added Cllr Dearey.

WOMEN interested in cycling are invited to take part in Cuchulainn Cycling Club’s womenonly league.

The league runs every Tuesday evening over eight weeks from Tuesday May 6 and is suitable for women of all abilities from true beginners to advanced racing cyclists since it is handicapped to reflect ability and experience.

Entry is free and you can register on the first night but you must have a Cycling Ireland club competition licence to participate, and the are available online at www. cyclingireland.ie The first night is a 5 mile Time Trial from Felda to Castlebellingham and over the next three weeks the club will race on an ‘out & back’circuit to Dunleer

covering approx 30km.

They plan a 10 mile time trial on week 5 followed by two weeks racing a tougher Ravensdale circuit before returning to the Dunleer route to complete the programme of races.

The group meet every Tuesday evening at 6.30 at Felda Gym on the Dublin Road and go for a spin to prepare for the league. All welcome.

Weapon would not be out of place in Game of Thrones News

A man who was addicted to tablets could offer no reason for being in possession of a weapon that was described as not being out of place in ‘The Game of Thrones’ in the early hours of the morning.

The description was given

by Judge Conal Gibbons at Dundalk District Court after viewing a photograph of the instrument being carried by Patrick English of 111 Oakland Park, Cox’s Demesne,

Dundalk, at 2.30am on January 3 this year.

Gardai on patrol had seen the defendant drop an item at Aisling Park and after speaking to Mr English, they discovered what was described as a pole bent in half and wrapped in cloth.

On viewing an image of the instrument, Judge Gibbons described it as ‘horrendous looking’.

“It is a fearsome looking object that would not be

out of place in The Game of Thrones and I have never seen anything like it. The serious thing is that it is a makeshift weapon and that frightens me. A lot of ingenuity has gone into it”, state the judge.

Solicitor, James MacGuill, argued that the fact that it was not a concealed weapon made it less sinister, the judge stated the he was taking a serious view of the offence.

Judge Gibbons stated that he would take into consideration the fact that defendant’s age and his guilty plea, along with the fact that there was no incident.

However, he warned that he was considering a custodial sentence but asked for a Probation Report in order to get the full picture. The case was adjourned until July 2 in Drogheda.

in Brief Dog pound figures

There were 556 dogs surrendered or collected by the dog pound in Louth last year according to figures released by the Department of Environment and Local Government last week.

Out of all the dogs that ended up the Louth animal shelter 10% or 56 were put to sleep, while 13 dogs died of natural causes.

149 families took in a rescue dog from the pound last year, while dog welfare trusts who saved the lives of 340 dogs last year.

Greyhounds are registered separately and last year’s figures say that 11 greyhounds were surrendered, while three were rehomed and eight were put to sleep. By contrast to the main body of dogs that entered the rescue centre, 73% of greyhounds were put down.

Community wants a safe passage to school

The parents, teachers and students of Scoil Namoh Lorcan in Omeath last week held early morning demonstrations to highlight the dangerous state of the footpaths around the school.

A united group who say that they are fed up with the dilapidated state of the thin path that only allows one person to walk at a time and, at parts, it is such bad condition that it forces them onto the busy road.

Last week’s demonstration was sparked by a near miss when a young girl walking to school narrowly escaped being hit by a car when she had to walk out onto the road to avoid a deep hold in the path.

The community are concerned that next time a student may not be so lucky.

for one person, while anyone pushing a buggy struggles to keep it on the path.

It is pitted, with chunks missing, deep puddles and poses a danger to the children who use it every day.

Other residents say that while they are wholly supportive of the new local governmentled cycling and walking initiatives encouraging a greener schools.

It is increasingly frustrating to see funding pour into these projects while school routes are neglected.

There are 70 students

in Scoil Naomh Lorcan who use the paths every school day.

It is hoped that the demonstration which disrupted traffic for two mornings last week while the children walked safely to school will highlight the safety problems and the irrational distribution of resources.

Caitlin McArdle, the mother of a child in the school said that action needs to be taken.

The community had previously been promised that improvements would be implemented, but this was followed

up by bodies passing responsibility for why it could not be dome among them.

The National Roads Authority said that they would implement a ramp, but then cancelled because there was no public lighting around the area.

When Louth County Council were approached, they said there was no money for lighting.

The parents approached the council about a lollipop person instead, but again sufficient funding was not available.

Almost 300 people attending from all over Ireland made Dundalk Chamber of Commerce’s annual tourism conference a great success once again.

The conference held in association with Louth County Council’s heritage office and entitled The Greenway Forward for Tourism, Health & Sport“ took place in Ballymascanlon

House Hotel last Wednesday April 9.

The event was intended to inform, enthuse and entertain the varied audience about the new business opportunities presented by the growing trend of adventure tourism, outdoor recreation and, especially, greenways.

It comes just ahead of the

long anticipated opening of the new greenway along the shore of Carlingford Lough between Carlingford and Omeath.

Delegates learned about the process of developing this new greenway and of how established greenways, like that in Mayo, have boosted the local economy and brought communities together.

There was also presentations on the creation of mountain bike cycling routes, canoe trails, glamping and bothy accommodation, woodland playgrounds and of the importance of urban parks and recreational areas for public health.

The event was opened by Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring T.D.

Fighters compete with best of best Junction 18 had a very successful day at the ‘Best of the Best’ competition held in Naas at the begining of April with six fighters competing on the day. Beginners Charlie and Dualta fought extremely well in both their divisions. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and couldn’t be faulted on their fights.

Louise and Calum also entered beginners sections, Both did fantastically well with Louise winning the silver and Calum secured the gold in his division. For brothers Enda and Diarmuid it was a great day Enda entered both the intermediate and advance sections he won the gold in intermediate and silver in the advance. Diarmuid won the gold in his advance division.

Kickboxing instructor Bernard Duffy and fitness instructor Ciaran McArdle are both very happy with all students and couldn’t be prouder of them.

Jim Ryan joins the race for election Long serving independent councillor Jim Ryan has become the latest to declare his intention to run for next month’s local elections.

The Fr Murray Park man will contest his fourth election as he aims to win a seat in the Dundalk/Carlingford area. Jim was first elected onto Dundalk Town Council in 1999 and Louth County Council in 2004. He currently serves on both councils.

Speaking ahead of next month’s elections Jim says he is already

busy canvassing and is looking forward to the challenge of getting reelected on May 23rd.

“I have been out canvassing for a few weeks now and talking to the people in my area about what I have to offer as their local representative and I hope that my experience in both the town and county councils will help me during the campaign. I’d like to thank everybody who is helping me in this campaign and I look forward to getting out and talking to people in

the Dundalk/Carlingford area” explained Jim. Jim is well known in local GAA circles having played for both the Louth senior and minor teams. He won a Louth Senior Championship medal with the Clans scoring a goal and a point against Ardee in 1959 when just 18 years old. He also claimed two minor championship and two Louth Hurling championship medals in a distinguished playing career.

Young politicians want fairer fares

Crosscause – to nazwa organizacji charytatywnej założonej przez wspaniałego człowieka, lokalnego filantropa, Conora Hughes’a. Organizacja zajmuje się dwoma projektami, w których skład wchodzą: Szkoła i Dom Wspólnoty w Afryce Zachodniej, Domy i przedszkole dla dzieci w Rumunii.

Naszą współpracę zapoczątkował Eugeniusz i jego przyjaźń z Conorem.

Conor pomagał nam już przed dwoma laty, gdy w Dundalk zagościł „Młody Toruń”, wówczas użyczał nam piętrowych łóżek, materacy, pościeli. Bez jego wkładu najpewniej część zespołu spałaby na gołej podłodze. Wówczas też, w marcu 2012 Eugeniusz i Conor mieli wiele trafionych pomysłów na zebranie funduszy dla obu organizacji.

Dlatego też Simul Polonia wspiera Conora, pomagamy sobie nawzajem, wspólnie uczestniczymy w paradzie Św. Patryka w Blackrock, a od zeszłego roku wspólnie organizujemy bag packing day w Tesco Long Walk.

Projekt wydaje się łatwym przedsięwzięciem.

Wystarczy stanąć przy kasie i pomagać w pakowaniu zakupów. W zamian ludzie wrzucają drobne do specjalnie oznaczonych ‘puszek’.

Pierwszym utrudnieniem jest zebranie odpowiedniej ilości osób. Bywa, że jest 5 jednocześnie otwartych kas. Sklep czynny jest w godzinach gdy nasza zaprzyjaźniona młodzież jest w szkole, a my w pracy.

Drugim utrudnieniem jest utrzymanie uśmiechu. To bardzo ważna choć tak mała rzecz.

As part of a nationwide campaign Louth Young Fine Gael is looking for the introduction of fairer prices for second level students aged between 16 and 18 on national transport networks both nationally and those that use public transport networks in County Louth.

Fair Fares is the first initiative of the current Young Fine Gael National Executive and the first awareness campaign to be launched by Louth Young Fine Gael.

The Fair Fares campaign will continue to be made aware of in Louth and hopefully this will see in the future a wholesale change in the manner pricing structures are managed on national transport networks.

Museum highlights growing collection donated by the people

The contribution that the people of Dundalk and County Louth have made to the County Museum’s impressive collection is the focus of its 20th anniversary exhibition: “Celebrating 20 years – A Story Unfolds”, which officially opened on Friday April 11.

The County Museum, Dundalk, a former distillery and later a tobacco warehouse, was officially opened on March 28, 1994 by then

President, Mary Robinson.

In the years since the opening of the museum, the people of the region have loyally supported the facility, adding to its collection by donating family records, images and artefacts of times gone by so that this history and knowledge is available to current and future generations.

County Curator, Brian Walsh, explained that the most appropriate way to celebrate the museum’s 20th an-

niversary is by including the people who have made it such a success by donating items to the Museum.

“The County Museum here in Dundalk has been a real success right from the beginning, thanks to the support of many local people. We have mounted many major exhibitions over the years. We were the only museum in the country to hold an Olympics Exhibition in 2012 and we were the first museum in Europe

to introduce virtual technology. Later this year we will become the first museum in the country to get our 1916 exhibition up and running”, explained Mr Walsh.

“Without a shadow of a doubt a huge part of our success has been the support we received from the people of Louth. They have worked with us wherever possible in building a remarkable archive of local history here”, stated Brian.

Minister of State for Small Business, John Perry TD, paid a visit to the Dundalk’s Creative Spark on Friday April 11 where he met with management, creative start-up enterprises, and local small businesses, all of whom use the facility.

The Minister was met at the Creative Spark building by Manager, Sarah Daly, who following the formalities of speeches and a presentation, brought the Minister on a tour of the building, allowing him to meet with business owners who have already shown their support for the facility by making Creative Spark their base.

Mr Perry was also invited to launch the Creative Spark Summer-Autumn Programme of Courses which will this year include jewellery making, life drawing, screen printing, ceramics and much more. Registration is now being taken for courses commencing from May 12.

Music Generation Louth’s Junior String Orchestra displayed their vast talent once again after claiming first place in the string ensemble competition at Newry Feis.

The programme’s Playstrings Training Orchestra also played superbly well and pulled off third place in the same competition.

Both groups rehearse weekly on Saturday mornings in the Music Department of DkIT under the expert direction of tutor Jayne Graham.

The standard of playing in the competition was extremely high but the polished performances by both Music Generation Louth groups impressed everyone, according to co-ordinator, Gemma Murray.

“We were delighted that both groups came home with the trophies this year. Of course it is not all about winning

Praised for chivalry after helping a friend

A man who was concerned about the well-being of a friend on a night of sub-zero temperatures ended up facing a drink driving charge after switching on his car in order operate the heater.

Ronan Roarty of 53 Chestnut Grove, Dunboyne, Co Meath, and his two friends had been locked out of the house in which they intended staying. He told Dundalk District Court that although he had been drinking earlier in the night, he had no intention of driving.

He said that he only sat in

the car because himself and his friend were concerned for their friend who was wearing only a light dress on night where the temperature was -4 degrees. The three had decided to sit in the car until the occupants of the house returned from a nightclub and had been in the car for up to two hours and had fallen asleep when the Gardai arrived.

After hearing the evidence, Judge Conal Gibbons not only dismissed the charge against Mr Roarty but also praised the men for looking

out for their friend.

“I am satisfied that the defence as shown there was no intent to drive the vehicle and they were only there to help a friend.

“I am glad to see there are chivalrous men still around.

They had a sense of chivalry about them to look after the wee cailín”, stated the judge.

The court heard that on March 5 last year, Gardai saw a car with the engine running parked on a kerb at Rockfield, Court, Hoeys Lane, Dundalk. The defendant was in the driver’s seat

and had his head back on the headrest.

After noticing a strong smell of alcohol, slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, the Garda arrested the defendant and a blood test taken at Dundalk Garda Station revealed he was over the legal limit for driving.

In evidence, Mr Roarty – who returned from Australia to meet the case - stated that he travelled to Dundalk to attend a 21st party in a house.

Later in the evening the group left for a nightclub, but as it was Rag Week, only

DkIT students were being admitted.

Mr Roarty and his friend returned to Rockfield Court and remained in the shed as they couldn’t get access to the house. After the arrival of a female friend they felt she was too cold to stay in the shed and decided to get into the car.

He stated that he had fallen asleep and only woke up when the Garda knocked on the window.

The defence barrister argued that their case illustrated that there was no intent to

drive, and they were only in the car to get heat due to concern for the girl.

Insp Martin Beggy argued that the definition of driving includes managing and controlling and just because the car is not in motion, does not mean he is not in charge.

Once the engine is started, the person is in control.

In making his decision, Judge Gibbons, praised the work of the Garda involved who had done her job correctly, but stated that the defence had offered a credible story.

Pearse Og get ready for white collar boxing

Pearse Og Hurling Club Dundalk are holding a white Collar Boxing night on April 19 in the Fairways Hotel and it promises to be a big night for the local club.

A total of 30 boxers, 12 women and 18 men have undergone six weeks of intensive training, with the proverbial blood, sweat and tears quite literally left in the ring.

The “Contender” concept embodies the fighting spirit Louth’s smallest GAA club, despite having just 30 members, Pearse Og have beaten the odds to become Senior County Champions for the last two years running.

The money raised on the night will assist in setting up the underage academy “The Pearse Og Little Pucks” which will provide hurling for kids aged four to six..

The programme sales on the night will be donated to the Stephen O’Connor Run for Childrens Cancer and Respite, which will be donated to the Childrens Respite Centre Lordship.

National Finals for St. Louis Dundalk’s Green Committee Failed to have drink drive charge dismissed

Students of the Green Committee in St. Louis Secondary School have seen their flair for business rewarded after they progressed through to the national finals of the One Good Idea Project SEAI. The girls project “Food For Thought” was picked as one of the top 20 out of 450 entries nationally.

The project has also got through to the Leinster finals of The Young Environmentalist Awards, ECO UNESCO. The green committee wanted to encourage their peers to reduce the amount of miles their food travels, reducing their carbon footprint and tackling the problem of climate change. The trees in the orchard will absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen which also helps alleviate the problem of climate change. Fruits will be

used in home economics classes and will reduce the schools food miles, and according to teacher Selena Reynolds, the initiative has been a great success.

“I am extremely proud of the students’ achievement. The girls have put in a significant amount of time, hard work and energy to get to this stage. They’re all very conscientious of environmental issues and are keen to improve their fellow students’ knowledge of these issues”, she explained.

The finals will take place at The Mansion House in Dublin on May 16. The students wish to give a huge thanks to all those who supported the project.

Family makes appeal over murder Four years after Seamus McMahon was gunned down in a Dundalk estate, his family is appealing to the community to help bring the killers to justice. Seamus was shot in a house in Bothar Crionn, Saltown, Dundalk on Sunday March 21, 2010 at 7pm.

The 41-year old father of one was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital but later died from his injuries.

In a statement the McMahon family described the killers as cowardly and said that only those who have been affected by such a crime could comprehend the pain they feel each day.

“We watch our mother struggle every day trying to come to terms with her son’s murder, she constantly asks, what our brother’s last moments were like.

“They left his son without a father,

Seamus and his son were inseperable and had so much life to look forward to.

His sons life has been a car crash ever since” The family members described a warm caring relationship with Seamus and said that they will always have wonderful memories of him. However they added that those responsible for Seamus’s murder must be brought to justice.

“We know that there are people out there who know who is responsible for Seamus’s murder.

“We understand that people are fearful, however we can’t imagine that it’s easy to keep such information no matter how small to yourself. Please come forward and help us.”

their lives without a care in the work while our lives have been left destroyed.

All we want as a family is to get justice for Seamus.”

They ask that anyone with information to pick up the phone and get in touch with Gardai.

Gardai have made a number of arrests in this case, one man was arrested in 2011, three men were arrested in Drogheda two years ago and while a woman in her 20s was also arrested no one has yet been charged with the murder.

Superintendent Gerard Curley said that the investigation is on-going.

A woman who failed in a bid to have a drink driving charge dismissed at Dundalk District Court was disqualified from driving for three years.

Colette O’Hagan of 108 Oaklawns, Dundalk, argued through her barrister, Irene Sands, that the levels of blood/alcohol on the medical records in court did not correspond with those on the summons.

Ms Sands stated that the medical records showed a concentration of 274 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, but there was no evidence proffered to court to say the defendant was over the limit to the extent of 247 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood as it stated on the summons.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that this typing error had not been noticed but pointed out that the offence is for exceeding a concentration of 50 milligrammes of alcohol, rather than the concentration itself.

Judge Flann Brennan dismissed the application of the defence, stating that he took the view that the amount on the summons was surplus to what was required.

The court heard that on July 9, 2012, Gardai observed a car swerve in the Avenue Road, almost hitting a parked car. It continued to weave on the road and then crossed onto to Hill St Bridge from the wrong lane.

The patrol car lights were activated after the car drove onto Stapleton Place, before the car stopped in the car park of the old shopping centre.

The driver, Colette O’Hagan, failed to provide sufficient breath for a breath specimen and was taken to Dundalk Garda Station. After a failure to get a reading from a breath sample, a doctor was called to take a blood sample. The investigating Garda denied that the defendant was not detained for a time longer than necessary.

Judge Brennan imposed a €300 fine and three-year disqualification while he fixed recognisance in the event of an appeal.

The idyllic surroundings of Bellurgan Park are set to become the home of the first festival of the season with Vantastival taking place over the May Bank Holiday weekend.

The diverse line-up sees Hothouse Flowers and Fight Like Apes take top billing with some 70 artists playing on the festivals three main stages over three days.

In keeping with their distinctly Irish aura the line-up is a bounty of the country’s finest musicians

including The Barley Mob, Sleep Thieves, The Vincent’s and the Hot Sprokets.

There is a also a strong local presence on the line-up with Jinx Lennon among the top billing acts and David Keenen whose reputations as an impressive singer songwriter and engaging performer is growing rapidly.

in Dundalk are also set to play over the weekend.

Dundalk FC are holding a fundraiser, ‘A Night at the Dogs’ on Saturday May 3 at Dundalk Stadium, and are calling on people to support the event.

Live music will begin at 6.30pm and the first race commencing at 7.50pm, while dinner will be served from 8pm. There are also a number of bar promotions and drinks reception on arrival for diners as well as a band performing after the last race, so everyone is sure of a good night’s entertainment.

There are many ways in which you can support this fundraiser. General admission to the race-track is priced at €10, while tickets for the four course dinner and music afterwards are €50. There are sponsorship options on both races and dogs.

3 AWARDS FOR RENAULT

The “untouchable” Megane Renaultsport 265 Cup collected its fifth What Car? Car of the Year Awards hot hatch trophy in a row tonight.

On a storming evening in London for the French brand, it drove off with three awards in total, plus another for its Dacia brand, as the 100 per cent electric ZOE Expression won ‘Best Green Car for less than £15,000’ and Captur was hailed ‘Best Small SUV for under £16,000’.

But the star of the show at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, was the facelifted Megane Renaultsport 265 Cup. Picking up ‘Best Hot Hatch over £20,000’, the judges said, for the price, “no other car could touch for outright excitement”.

Describing the five-time winner, road test editor Steven Huntingford said: “This squat, muscular hatch continues to delight with its blistering pace and direct, responsive handling.

“The astonishing grip, body composure, and that explo-

sive engine really do make this a thrill-a-minute car. To top it all, the hot hatch is perfectly tolerable in everyday driving – motorway journeys are a reasonably refined, comfortable affair, and it’s easy enough to pilot around town.”

The What Car? COTY Awards are given out only to the cars that set the highest standards in their class, and it is considered to be one of the biggest and best dates on the UK automotive calendar.

Also among the honours in the capital was the pure electric Renault ZOE Expression, winning its price point in the

best green car section. Judges said the “Fiesta-sized supermini is one of the most affordable ways into electric motoring”.

“The ZOE’s attributes don’t stop at affordability,” they added. “It’s a great small car in its own right, with room for four adults and a useful amount of luggage, a suitably bright and futuristic-looking interior, and big-car standard equipment including satellite navigation and a colour touch-screen.

“It’s even fun to drive, with the characteristic zesty initial acceleration and outstanding refinement of electric propul-

sion, as well as a comfortable ride and handling balance.”

And to complete a superb hat-trick for Renault, the Captur TCe 90 Dynamique MediaNav was declared ‘Best Small SUV for less than £16,000’.

Judges said most of the smallest SUVs are “deeply flawed, but the Clio-based Captur is different”, before adding that it has “a spacious and user-friendly cabin” and is “one of the quietest cars of its kind”.

“Its low list price and CO2 emissions make it easy to justify as both a private and company buy,” they added.

“Renault’s engineers clearly worked hard to make it a safe car, too, because the Captur was rated highly for adult, child and pedestrian protection when it was crash-tested

by Euro NCAP. “Our preferred trim – Dynamique MediaNav – gives you everything from automatic lights and climate control to Bluetooth and a touchscreen sat-nav system.”

The all-new Kia Carens compact MPV has been awarded a maximum 5-Star safety rating

by Europe’s leading road safety organisation, Euro NCAP. The Kia Carens is one of only two compact MPV models currently on sale in Europe to earn 5-Stars in the 2013 Euro NCAP tests.

“From the beginning of the new Carens’ development programme, Kia engineers were dedicated to creating a compact MPV with the very best structure and safety technology to protect drivers, their families and pedestrians in the event of an accident,” comments Benny Oeyen, Vice President Marketing and Product Planning, Kia Motors Europe.

The safety organisation also noted that new Carens is equipped with a ‘belt-up’ reminder for all seats, a driver-set adjustable speed limiter and that all of the child restraint types for which the car is designed could be properly installed and accommodated in the car.

Standard safety equipment fitted to the new Kia Carens across Europe includes six airbags (front, front side and curtain), seatbelt reminders (front, middle and rear seats), ESC (Electronic Stability Control), HAC (Hill Assist Control) to prevent roll-back and ESS (Emergency Stop Signal) which flashes the brake lights to alert other motorists when the driver is making an emergency stop.

The new Kia Carens joins six other Kia models – cee’d, Rio, Venga, Soul, Sportage and Sorento – in scoring a 5-Star rating in Euro NCAP crash test results.
