IRELAND rugby heroes Robert and David Kearney made their triumphant home to Cooley on Tuesday as they showed off the hard earned 6 Nations trophy to friends, family and supporters in the peninsula.

The Kearney’s who hail from Willville, Cooley, were greeted to a heroes welcome as they brought the trophy into Lily Finnegan’s pub on Tuesday evening just days after Ireland’s thrilling Championship clinching victory in Paris.

Katie is seat belt sheriff

By Paul Byrne There was huge excitement in Dublin Castle last week for Scoil Mhuire na nGael Bay Estate’s First Class pupils as Katie O’Shaughnessy Larkin was declared the national winner of the Seatbelt Sheriff Poster Competition.

Katie finished ahead of 55,000 pupils around the country in the RSA annual competition with her excellent poster entitled ‘Travel far in your car. Mind your health, wear a belt’.

The Road Safety Authority’s annual Seat Belt Sheriff and Hi Glo Silver awards has been encouraging children to learn vital road safety skills, such as putting on their seatbelt See page 14

in Brief Panicked when he saw Gardai

A man who found a knife panicked when he saw Gardai a half an hour later and dropped it on the ground.

Sean Gorman of 35 College Heights, Hoey’s Lane, Dundalk pleaded guilty to a possession charge as a result of the incident on August 18 last year on Earl St. The court also heard that on January 13 last year, Gardai received a report of two men attempting to get into the rear of a house in College Heights. When Gardai arrived they found the defendant standing in the bath. He had cuts to his hand, a rubber glove on the other hand and had attempted to conceal his identity.

He told Gardai he had only gone into the house to get another person out. He has since paid €540 compensation for damage caused.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a conviction and fine of €100 in respect of each case.

Man can’t video Dundalk FC matches due to curfew A man who admitted carrying out citizen patrols to assist people who feel vulnerable in their homes, applied to have a curfew lifted to allow him video Dundalk FC football matches.

Harry Taaffe, of O’Hanlon Park, Dundalk, told Dundalk District Court that as he carries out video analysis for the club, he would be restricted in covering games away from home due to the curfew that was imposed.

Mr Taaffe is charged with causing criminal damage a house and car on January 13, along with threatening or abusive behaviour and assault on February 5.

Part of the bail conditions included observing a curfew from 11pm to 7am.

In objecting to the application to vary the conditions, Insp Martin Beggy,

stated that it was not just football matches that he recorded but also activity at night as part of a citizens’ patrol.

Insp Beggy stated that Mr Taaffe had been given bail in relations to charges over two incidents where physical violence was alleged.

He added that Gardai were concerned that this may continue if he came across something while on patrol.

Mr Taaffe told the court that a page had been set up on the internet stating that if people felt vulnerable in their homes and couldn’t get the Gardai, the members of the patrol would wait with them until officers arrived.

In response to a question from Insp Beggy, Mr Taaffe stated that those on patrol were dressed in fluorescent jackets and had walkie

talkies. He added that he couldn’t understand why the Gardai wanted a curfew.

Solicitor James McGuill highlighted initiatives such as Community Alert and Neighbourhood Watch which were promoted by Gardai, and stated that the internet page in question had told people not to confront anyone, but to call the Gardai.

It also thanked the Gardai for their efforts.

He added that a curfew is usually reserved for persistent offenders but in this came Mr Taaffe had no criminal convictions and the curfew was interfering with other aspects of his life.

Insp Beggy responded by stating that while Gardai support community initiatives, they do so on a struc-

tured basis, not through the use of fluorescent jackets or walkie talkies and they don’t ask people to go out on patrol.

He stated that he would consider applications to have the curfew lifted on particular nights where matches were taking place.

This would require evidence from a club official of standing that he is employed by the club to carry out a particular duty, rather than it being a hobby or pastime.

Judge Flann Brennan, stated that he was not satisfied that he should withdraw the curfew, and adjourned the case to Drogheda on Friday March 15 to hear evidence from a representative of Dundalk FC. The matter was then adjourned back to Dundalk on Wednesday March 19.

Many tributes paid following tragic death of Edward Haughey Tributes have poured in for Louthborn businessman Edward Haughey who died in a helicopter crash last Thursday evening with

three other passengers.

Mr Haughey, the chair of Newry based Norbrook Holdings and Laboratories was one of the wealthiest people in

the North with an estimated fortune of €780 million.

Dundalk Chamber of Commerce PRO Paddy Malone said that “Dundalk was saddened today with the news that we had lost one of our sons.”

“Edward Haughey was one of a generation of international entrepreneurs who were from the town. He never forgot his roots and was generous to both Kilcurry and the CBS School (Colaiste Rìs). He gave great employment to the Newry - Dundalk area,” he added.

Mr Haughey was born in Kilcurry and went to school in Dundalk’s CBS. He emigrated to America in the

1960s and on his return he came back to the area and established a veterinary pharmaceutical manufacturing business, Norbrook Laboratories.

He later expanded into aviation with a helicopter charter company and owned some prestigious property in both the UK and Ireland.

Pat O’Neill, who remained friends with Mr Haughey described him as a tough man and a good man.

“You have to be tough if you want to develop a worldwide business,” he said.

“There was no better host and no better a character. He had houses all over, but he turned them into homes. His homes were palatial but once

you went in the door you felt the warmth of a family home. He was a tremendous host and tremendous fun,” said Mr O Neill.

“He had a sponge like brain, he was learning every day, and had a huge knowledge of anything he touched whether his business or antiques,” he added.

He was involved in Irish political life with a nomination to the Seanad by Taoiseach Albert Reynolds in 1994 and again in 1997 by Bertie Ahern.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch in the UK is continuing to investigate the crash which occurred close to Mr Haughey’s estate in Norfolk, UK.

A man who believed his mobile phone was stolen, assaulted a teenager and a 12-year-old boy on a bus after mistakenly believing they were involved in the theft.

David Hearty of 20 Hughes Park, Dundalk, paid €900 as ‘a token of his remorse’ after pleading guilty at Dundalk District Court.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that on September 5 last year,

two students, aged 17 and 12, were getting on a bus leaving from DkIT. When the defendant turned around to look at them, the teenager asked what he was looking at. Mr Hearty then stood up and assaulted him with a punch and a kick, and also striking the 12-year-old in the melee.

The father of one of the victims came to the scene and after the assailant was

seen walking on the street, the Gardai were called.

Solicitor, Niall Lavery, stated that the defendant felt that he was the victim of the theft of his phone and wrongly blamed the two passengers.

There had been a message on the phone from his since deceased mother. He added that because of this he was upset, but acknowledged that

it didn’t excuse his behaviour. Mr Lavery added that his 40-year-old client is the sole carer for an elderly uncle, who was concerned as to how he might cope without his nephew.

He raised €900, which the solicitor accepted was more of token of remorse than adequate compensation, but finances were limited.

Judge Flann Brennan ad-

journed the matter until July 16 for a Probation Report and remarked that he didn’t think €900 was sufficient compensation for what he viewed as a serious matter.

“I have to take a serious view of an assault which was unjustified, even if he did think it was justified. Even if he felt he was a victim, he wasn’t entitled to take any action”, added Judge Brennan.

Local students impress at Feis Dhun Dealgan

Hundreds of families descended on the Fairways Hotel for the Fheis Dun Dealgan, and over two days students from as young as five and up to 18 competed in 42 competitions, with Wee County students walking away with big prizes.

Students competed in poetry, prose and drama over two days but the final original performances to music were a highly anticipated event.

There were silver medal winning ‘Revolting Children’ and gold star routine of ‘What does Fox say’ from the junior cycle, while the senior groups executed an

emotional depiction of a Mag-dalene story to Hozier’s Take me to Church. The gold medal group performed a minimal but graphic production of the sinking of Titanic.

Patricia Reynolds, the Feis organiser expressd her delight with the event.

“I am so very proud of each and every one of the competitors. Their personal achievement comes from participation on an individual and group basis. They all ought to have a sense of success and a renewed respect and delight in themselves and for themselves.

“The students were quite amazing. I loved

every moment of the weekend savouring the richness of performance and the pure pleasure and happiness derived by the students and families alike”, she said.

In the race for the overall best student trophy, the competition was neck and neck between Shauna Farren and Penny Morris right up to the final solo competition.

The tension was palpable with both girls winning two individual overall trophies, it came down to a process of mathematics with Shauna Farren being awarded the most outstanding student with only one point between the two

leading ladies.

Another RAPA member, Niamh Daly, was awarded the Mary White prize for the student with the most potential but not having won first place over the competitions.

Judges, Pamela Hughes and Patrick Howe were astounded at the “incredible consistency of talent and very high standard of performance throughout the weekend Festival.”

Such was their regard

for the quality of the speech and drama students, Pamela Hughes of Take 2, casting agency has pledged to sponsor a trophy next year in a new category, to be decided upon at a later date.

Making progress after reaching rock bottom A man who ‘reached rock bottom in a short space’ of time was warned to continue his recent improvement in behaviour or face the prospect of spending a considerable part of his life in institutions.

The warning was made to Paul English of 178 Cedarwood Park, Cox’s Demesne, Dundalk, after Judge Flann Brennan heard that he had been making great efforts to turn his life around..

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that his 21-year-old client, who pleaded guilty to a number of charges, has stopped offending and is receiving help for his addiction problems.

“The majority of offences occurred within an eight-week period and there was concern from people close to him that

things were getting out of control. He has since been accepted on a faith-based programme and has discovered the meaning of penance.

“Having reached rock-bottom in a short space of time, he has followed through on what is a very difficult programme and stopped offending.

“He has addressed various addiction issues, which were mostly alcohol”, explained Mr MacGuill.

The assistant director of the recovery home where the defendant is now based, stated that since September, Mr English had stabilised his behaviour and addressed his work ethic.

He added that the programmed normally lasts between 12 and 18 months, and

that on his current record the defendant would be a candidate for completing the second phase, where he could stay to help others or continue his studies.

The court heard that on May 8, last year Mr English stole €350 from a restaurant on Clanbrassil St, while on May 13 he admitted causing €100 worth damage to a premises.

On the same day he was drunk on Clanbrassil St and broke a window causing €918 worth of damage.

On May 30 he was drunk and abusive to Gardai and failed to comply with their directions at Cedarwood Park, and admitted further public order charges at the same location the following day.

On July 5 he stole 40 DVDs

valued at €279 from Xtravision and on September 19 he was arrested on public order charges at Dundalk Garda Station.

On September 26 he admitted being a passenger in a stolen car at Carrickarnon, while he also admitted possessing a cannabis joint at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, on July 26.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a six month sentence in respect of the criminal damage charge on May 13 and three months in respect of the theft on May 8, with other offences taken into consideration.

He suspended the sentences for 12 months and warned the defendant to continue finding the ability to behave responsibly.

Parent Forum a great success The Crowne Plaza was buzzing last Friday March 7 as Dundalk Incredible Years held its 2014 Parent Forum.

This was the second such event, following on from the very successful event held in April 2013 when John Lonergan, former Governor at Mountjoy Prison, was guest speaker.

The 2014 event was structured around the

feedback received from the parents at last year’s event. The focus was around everyday social issues that parents face as well as refresher modules from the Incredible Years Parent Programme that all the participants have completed.

Since the introduction of the Incredible Years Parent Programme to Dundalk in 2010, a total

of 220 plus parents will have completed the programme when the five current courses come to an end next month.

Over 80 parents participated in workshops on Bullying, Drugs, Internet Safety/Cyber Bullying and Managing Stress before attending an Incredible Years Parent Programme refresher module.

Workshops prove successful Worklink recently ran two very successful events focusing on CV writing skills. They held a CV workshop “Make your CV work for you” on March 4, and a CV clinic on March 11, both at O Fiaich College.

Participants in the CV workshop and CV clinic rated both events very highly and found

that they gained helpful information and support from Worklink’s volunteers. The workshop was run by Paul Smith, a career coach and Worklink volunteer, and explained how to lay out a CV, what to include, how to write a cover letter, and how to avoid common mistakes. Participants then brought their completed CVs to

the clinic a week later to receive one-to-one feedback.

Ceinwen Fergus, Worklink’s North East Regional Coordinator said “Both our CV events were very well attended, with great feedback from the people who took part. We plan to run a workshop in April focusing on interview preparation”.

“Myself and my wife Siobhan went over to Paris on Friday and I have to say it was a fantastic weekend.

The game was amazing and the tension at

the end was unbearable. When France got in for what looked to be the winning try we were crestfallen as we were sure that they had stolen it at the death”, explained David.

“We all erupted with joy as we realised the try was disallowed and it was such a special feeling. We were so proud of the boys and the whole team. I remember after the English match we were all crestfallen and down but Robert said to me ‘if we can win the championship it’s worth any number

of Triple Crowns. To bounce back and win the Championship in France’s back yard was really special and it was fantastic to be in the stadium to witness it”, added a delighted David.

Cooley man Jamie Farrell was one of the many who turned up in Lily Finnegan’s to welcome home the Kearney’s and he described the atmosphere in the pub as the brothers brought in the trophy.

“I was down there for about two hours and there was a great buzz about the place.

Everybody was getting their picture taken with the trophy and with the two boys and they got a great welcome from us all”, explained Jamie.

“I watched the game at home and it was so tense the whole way through but such a great feeling when the final whistle went”, he added.

The Shave or Dye Dundalk fundraising evening in the Lisdoo once again proved a huge success as the men from Kilcurry continued their charity raising exploits for charities around the area.

Now in it’s third year the event had ten volunteers sitting in the hot seat to get their dyed locks shaved off. A total of €2,300 was raised on the night and with sponsorship cards to come in, that figure is expected to rise significantly.

This year’s Lisdoo event saw ten men get their heads shaved as well as two volunteers who agreed to get their beards shaved off to raise a few euro.

It wasn’t just the boys getting in on the act as two girls Malgorzata Sylwia Drzewiec and Leanne Coburn agreed to get their locks dyed for the event.

Aidan Duffy who helped organise the event was delighted with how the event turned out and thanked everybody who turned up on the evening.

“We had a great night in the Lisdoo and I’d like to thank all who supported us and helped out and also to the band ‘The Blitz’ who played for us

without asking for a cent. We raised €545 alone through the auction on the evening and people were extremely generous with their offers”, explained Aidan.

“We had great prizes including cash prizes from €30 up to €120 in the raffle as well as a stay in a four star hotel in Dublin and a stay in the Four Seasons Dundalk. There was also one lucky lady who managed to win a pair of Garth Brooks tickets for herself so there were a lot of people going home happy on Sunday night”, he laughed.

“We would like to thank everyone who helped in this year’s event, those who shaved, dyed, all the long suffering wives and girlfriends behind the scenes who turned tidy kitchens and bathrooms upside down to get the colours just right.

“Also the hairdressers who helped us out as well as The Lisdoo who gave us the room and provided finger food.

And finally everyone who donated prizes and sponsored the guys and girls. :It couldn’t have taken place without your help and generosity and we’ll all have a rest now before gearing up for next years event”, added Aidan.

A man who admitted a charge of drink driving was disqualified for two years at Dundalk District Court.

Thomas David McQuillan, Ravensdale Park, Dromad, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai on November 1.

He admitted a charge of drink driving and failing to produce insurance.

In convicting the defendant, Judge Flann Brennan imposed a two year ban and fine of €300.

Louth Agri Show will return to Bellurgan Park

The Co Louth Agricultural Show will once again take place in Bellurgan Park on Sunday June 15.

The show was launched last Thursday night in the Ballymascanlon Hotel by local MEP Mairead McGuinness and the committee are hoping to build on the success of last year’s event at the venue.

There was no shortage of compliments as Bellurgan Park certainly played its part in the success of the show and members are looking forward to working again with the Toner family as preparations for the 2014 show continue.

This is the 125th show and the full schedule will be made available over the coming weeks.

A publican who was called to intervene in a dispute in his pub took a chance on driving to his premises despite being disqualified at the time.

Patrick Belton, 20 The Meadows, Point Road, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai as he was returning home and as a result he appeared at Dundalk District

Court to face charges of driving while disqualified and driving without insurance on March 15, 2013.

Solicitor, Paul Tiernan, stated that his 51-year-old client who suffers from a number of health difficulties, had been called to an incident and decided to drive. Mr Belton had

been banned for four years on Februry 17, 2010, for a refusal to provide a sample, and his solicitor pointed out that the extended ban will have implications for his client, as he asked the judge not to interfere with his liberty.

Mr Tiernan added that the defendant could

have brought an application to have his licence restored before this latest incident, but hadn’t done so.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a fine of €750 on each charge, and imposed a six year ban for driving while disqualified, and three year ban for driving without insurance.

,Secondary school teachers in Dundalk -were amongst an esti-mated 27,000 around the acountry to stage a lunchtime protest over the -Government’s failure to -heed their concerns rabout the new junior cy-cle plans.

Teachers around the stown held placards and ,voiced their opposition @to the new Junior Cycle Student Award programme which they feel will undermine standards, equity and fairness.

The old Junior Cert exams system is due to be abolished in September to be replaced by a system where teachers are responsible for assessment of their own pupils for a new certificate called the Junior Cycle Students Award (JCSA), to be issued by schools.

“We’re staging this protest to highlight how this new junior cycle will undermine standards, equity and fairness in our system. There has been a complete lack of consultation with teachers with regards and we have decided enough is enough and we are protesting today over lunchtime during our own free time to raise our concerns over this issue”, explained Mark.

“The new Junior Cycle education is coming in this September and we believe that it will promote inequality in our schools, it removes the integrity of our education system and despite what the government say this is primarily a money saving exercise.

“We as teachers have

no confidence in this plan and despite many, many efforts to sit around a table and discuss this new plan with the Government we have been roundly ignored and they are going ahead with it despite our grave concerns”, he added.

Yesterday’s protest did not disrupt classes, but teacher opposition to the Junior Cycle reform plans could yet have an impact on schools and their pupils.

Both second-level teacher unions, the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI) and the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI), are balloting members on industrial action and the results will be known on March 26.

The TUI is also asking its members to vote on possible strike action.

Climate Change

The Green Campus at DkIT has invited Professor John Sweeney from the Geography Department NUI Maynooth to present a lecture on Climate Change during Green Week. The lecture will be held in room M128 in the Nursing Building of the DkIT from Noon to 1pm on Tuesday March 25. It is open to the public and all are welcome.

Green Week will be running from March 24 to March 28.

Professor John Sweeney has been a lecturer at the Geography Department NUI Maynooth, since 1978.

SEACHTAIN na Gaeilge was celebrated in style by teachers and pupils in Scoil Realt Na Mara last week as all classes embraced the national language through music, song, drama, dance and other fun activities.

There was also great success for Ms Glenholmes’ 2nd class who won Duais Speisialta an Mholtóra and Scoth-léiriú na Féile at Féile Got a Story? Dhún Dealgan last week.

Mr McCaul, principal in Realt Na Mara, congratulated Miss Glenholmes class on a magnificent achievement whilst commending all the pupils who took part.

“The children put on a brilliant show and it was lovely to share in the wonder of it all.

“They’ve really opened our eyes as to what can be achieved through passion for the language and hard work”, he noted.

“They were the youngest competitors in Mullingar and

they were wonderful and a credit to the school.

“We are so proud of them and well done to Ms Glenholmes and the children for doing so well”, he added.

Meanwhile back in Realt na Mara all classes did their bit to celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge as classes took part in the Comortas Ealáine (art) and the Comortas Fíliochta (poetry).

Each day pupils were encouraged to speak Irish and the cúpla focail could be heard throughout the school each day with pupils getting into the spirit of things.

The week’s activities cumulated in a session ceol on Friday with Ms Glenholmes successful second class pupils staging their award winning drama which included a wonderful reworking of ‘The Lion King’ which went down well with all in attendance.

Realt na Mara have been promoting playing music in the school over the past couple of years and now have regular seisiún ceoil’s in the school each week.

Two Fifth Year Dún Lughaidh students, Emily Reilly and Sarah Reel, recently attended the Le Chéile conference which took place in Athlone.

Le Cheile Schools’ Trust comprises the schools of 14 religious congregations.

The main objective of Le Chéile is the development of a vision of Catholic education and overseeing its implementation in the 52 voluntary secondary schools and 7 community schools they are responsible for. Emily and Sarah attended an informative talk and were briefed on the work of Le Chéile.

The girls also participated in a wide range of activities such as art, music, drama and poet-

ry. They took part in the music group and wrote a song with the lyrics showcasing what they had learned in the two days that they were in attendance.

“It was a great opportunity for us to learn more about Le Chéile.

We met so many new people and it was interesting to hear everyone’s views on what Le Chéile

means in our schools and communities” added Sarah.

Both girls were delighted to represent their school and they really enjoyed the experience.

A man who admitted a charge of drink driving was fined €500 and banned from driving for six years at Dundalk District Court.

Brian Breen of Farm Road, Annagassan, crashed into a wall at

Castlebellingham on September 25, 2012, and Gardai were called to the scene. The defendant, who was taken to hospital by ambulance, provided a urine sample which illustrated that he was over the limit.

Damage to the wall was estimated at €3,600 and solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that the incident was ‘regrettable’.

The defendant had previously been disqualified in November 2001, but

as that sentence was being appealed, Mr Breen was not banned at the time of this incident.

The appeal was unsuccessful and as a result, Judge Flann Brennan, imposed a six year ban for his second offence.

Consumer sentiment towards the housing market has improved steadily, according to the latest AIB/ESRI Housing Market Index.

The index is a measure of the perception consumers have in relation to the Irish housing market as well as their house price expectations.

The survey of over 800 consumers conducted by the ESRI each month between July and December 2013 shows the index increased to 104.4 in December 2013 from 100 at the end of September 2013, based on a three-month rolling average.

Some of the main findings of the index include: A significant shift in consumer expectations in relation to house prices from July to December 2013. Those consumers surveyed

who believe house prices will be higher in 12 months’ time increased from 29.2% to 46.3% The main risks to buying noted in December by consumers was ‘worries about future income’ or ‘affordability concerns’ (58.4%), followed by ‘fears about increasing interest rates’ (17.7%).

Also cited were ‘changes in family circumstances’ (16.3%), as was ‘possible changes in house prices’ (6.5%) Overall, consumers expect that house prices will increase by 2.1% over the next 12

months. Dublin-based consumers expect higher house price growth, with growth of 3.6% expected over the next 12 months.

This report is the latest in a line of positive news stories which suggest a positive turning point in the market.

Ireland’s housing market took a big hit in recent years with prices falling by up to 65% in some cases but for the first time the market is showing some signs of stabilizing, according to the Irish Central Statistics Office.

W poniedziałek, 10 marca 2014 Simul Polonia po raz kolejny wzięło udział w projekcie, mającym na celu przybliżenie młodzieży irlandzkiej Polskiej kultury i tradycji.

Tym razem byliśmy z wizytą w Klubie Młodych, w Whitecross, Irlandia Północna.

W projekcie pomogły nam Ania Sałata i Ewa Szymanek z Klubu Młodych „Pajęczyna” – Dziękujemy!!!

Głównym naszym zadaniem było skupienie się na naszej polskiej muzyce i tańcu.

Po krótkiej prezentacji Polski, naszych zwyczajów świątecznych, odmienności pór roku i ilości dzikich zwierząt wciąż żyjących w Polsce, szczególnie w puszczach i w górach, przeszliśmy do polskiego folkloru.

Młodzież irlandzka była pod wrażeniem różnorodności naszych strojów regionalnych, choć największe wrażenie zrobiła na nich ich waga. Kostium Łowicki damski waży około 14kg.

Zespół Mazowsze w ciągu jednego koncertu prezentuje około 20 różnych strojów regionalnych, a ich bagaż waży około 5 ton. Ci z nas, którzy przed dwoma laty gościli członków Młodego Torunia na pewno pamiętają jak ciężkie są wełniane spódnice.

Wraz z pomocą nagrania koncertwego „Mazowsza” pokazaliśmy Młodym Irlandczykom najpopularniejsze tańce ludowe: Chodzonego, z którego wywodzi się Polonez; Krakowiaka, jedynego zapamietanego tańca narodowego Polski; Oberka z charakterystycznymi popisowymi skokami; Mazura i jego zawrotnie szybkie tempo; Kujawiaka oraz taniec zbójnicki, który najbardziej spodobał sie młodzieży.

Następnie nauczyliśmy ich kroku podstawowego i krótkiego układu Poloneza. Ania i Ewa pięknie prowadziły Klub Młodych Whitecross do tańca.

Jestem z Was bardzo dumna dziewczyny, nie kazda nastolatka by się na taką wizytę odważyła. Simul Polonia i Whitecross Youth Club pieknie dziękują.

Wizytę zakończyliśmy maślanymi ciasteczkami i innymi polskimi smakołykami.

New effort to re-open Dunleer station

A committee was formed earlier this week in Dunleer, aimed at reopening the town’s train station.

The station has been closed for 30 years but there have been strong calls over the years for it to be reopened and a meeting was held in The Grove House in Dunleer on Monday night to discuss the reopening of the station, with around 60 attending.

Following the meeting, a committee was formed to lead a campaign for the station’s reopening. It includes local representatives in-

cluding Louth TD Peter Fitzpatrick and councillors Frank Godfrey, Finnan McCoy, Dolores Minogue, Pearse McGeough and Colm Markey.

In a statement earlier this week, Irish Rail

said reopening the station is not in its current investment plan and it does not feature in the current programme for government.

A spokesperson said the only option would be a developer-led initi-

ative but this would have to be subject to a business case being put forward.

Local TD Fitzpatrick said it was now up to committee members and people of the town to show there is a strong

demand for the station.

The next meeting will take place on Monday March 24 and local residents are being encouraged to attend the meeting to try and kick start this campaign off.

The chairman of the

committee is Niall Gallen, the secretary is Aiden Rigney and the PRO is Damien Purcell.

If the railway train station does reopen it would boost the employment and business in Dunleer.

Untreated water flowing into tourist hotspots News

Two main aspects of water treatment in North Louth have been criticised by the Environmental Protection Agency for failing to meet EU requirements.

The discharge of untreated water into Carlingford Lough at Omeath was underlined as one of the main problems in the area.

Currently raw sewage is

dumped into Carlingford Lough thour In November last year Louth County Council was handed a €4,000 fine in Dundalk District Court for raw sewage being discharged into the lough 25 metres away from the usual point of release in main channel of the lough.

At the time Louth County Council stated that they manage an outfall pipe as per authorisation from the EPA and

“have endeavoured to achieve the successful management of same in accordance with the terms of the EPA conditions.”

The Omeath example was included in a major water investment programme but work is still in the preliminary preparation stages. The plant required under the 23 year old EU directive is expected to cost about €4million.

As well as untreated sewage flowing into the lough, water

treatment in Dundalk was also highlighted as having failed to comply with all of the of the mandatory effluent quality and sampling standards in 2012.

This report will be one of the last before Irish Water takes over responsibility for these assets and will be responsible for ensuring that EU Directive are complied with.

Urban waste water is one of the principal causes of pollution of Irish water resources.

The Tuborg Dundalk and district darts league looks like it is going to go right down to the last game of the season with no team showing as out and out favourites in any division. The league results from this week have done nothing more than tighten the tables even more.

The Premier Division saw “The Stags” face the team in third place Commercial 1896 in a tie which would be vital in the race to the winners post.

Raymond Harte was first in for the team from the Commercial Club and he got his team off to a positive start with a 2-0 win in a game which was a repeat of the recent cup semi final.

Martin Carvill was up next

to level the game hitting a welltimed maximum along the way to a well fought win against Ian Rooney. The standard stayed high throughout the remaining games but it was down to Alan McMahon to secure a point for the Commercial Club in a game they had chances to win.

The First Division top-of-thetable clash had all the ingredients for excitement and nerves but Harrys Bar has a team that has shown they can handle pressure well. They were playing division leaders the Stags Green and despite going behind they had Stephen McQuillan and Liam Byrne to regain the lead.

The scoring in this game was of a high standard with 100 plus scores being hit regularly by both

teams. The result had to wait for the very last game and Mickey Fee for Harrys hit the winning doubles which bring Harrys to joint first at the top of the table.

In the Second Division the road to Gyles Quay doesn’t seem so long when you are winning , that was the view of the Fergusons men after the scored a 4-2 win over Punters Tigers.

Michael Crawley secured the win for the visiting team. This kept the men from the peninsula close to league leaders Johnny Masons who could only draw against the Castlebar Knights.

Yesterday in Dublin Castle, special awards were given to more than 200 children from 10 primary schools around Ireland in recognition of the outstanding contribution they had made in keeping Ireland’s roads safe.

“When Katie’s name was called out her classmates were so excited and there was a great buzz in the hall”, explained Martina The prize was €2000 for our school and her winning design will be published in the coming weeks in national newspapers. The whole class was also treated to a day out in Dublin Zoo and they had a fantastic time.

“It’s a great initiative by the RSA and it’s very important to teach the children the importance of road safety from a young age. We’re all very proud of Katie and we’re delighted that she won first prize” added the enthusiastic

Over the years the cutting edge work of the Netwell Centre with older people has helped the Centre earn an international reputation for excellence in ageing and later life. The Netwell Centre continues to work directly with older people in Dundalk and Louth.

On Thursday evening staff from the centre enjoyed a get-together with some of the many Netwell volunteers who support the work of the centre locally. The event was well attended with 33 people gathered in the function room in Lis Na Dara for an evening of training, chat and refreshments.

Ann Marron, from the Netwell Centre, pointed out that such events are very important in terms of thanking the volunteers who give up their time.

“Many of the volunteers gathered here tonight are involved in in the Netwell Centre’s social home visiting service to older people. They provide social contact to older people who are at risk of isolation in their home and in so doing, play an important role in helping us to build a cohesive, age-friendly society; the kind of society we all want to live in when we are older. Issues over accessibility are discussed The issue of accessibility in the town of Dundalk was foremost in the minds of the people who attended the meeting in the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Monday last.

The large numbers who turned out to hear and see the results of the Accessibility Study recently completed by John Morgan and Seamus O’Grady and to make their views heard on problems they experience in Dundalk was a reflection of the impact that accessibility issues have on persons with disabilities, their families and the general public.

Chairing the meeting, Senator Moran welcomed everyone including members of the Irish Wheelchair Association, the National Council for the Blind, Persons with Disability Ireland, Rehab Care, National Learning Network, SNAP, and Cllr

Jennifer Green Dundalk Town Council.

Then John Morgan presented a visual account of the study he recently completed with the assistance of Seamus O’Grady, including a video of his attempts to negotiate the streets of Dundalk in his motorised wheelchair.

It was clear from this presentation that while some areas of the town are easy for a wheelchair user to manage, many of the kerbs are of unsuitable height and pose problems such as jolting of the spine or inability to mount the footpath forcing the user to proceed on the road.

It was acknowledged that Dundalk Town Council has, over the years, made some good progress in improving accessibility in some areas and there was some discussion on the merits of the Town Square.

It would appear that while it is easily accessible for wheelchair users, those who are visually impaired find it dangerous.

The works planned by the council for Clanbrassil St, Church St and the Square were broadly welcomed and these plans are available for viewing in the Town Hall, Crowe St, until Wednesday April 9.

There was an opportunity for everyone present at the meeting to put their views forward and the consensus was that there is a need for a group to come together that could co-ordinate the concerns and suggestions of everyone and liaise with the council so that accessibility issues could be tackled before expensive work was done.

New nissan note

The new NissanNote has moved away from being a Honda Jazz rival and is now a direct challenger to the likes of the Clio and Polo. The new Note has the same overall footprint of its predecessor but there will be more luggage room – a sliding rear bench allows owners to alternate between maximum luggage space and maximum passenger legroom.

Technology is at the forefront of the Nissan Note – and options include a Blind Spot Warning system, Lane Departure Warning and an advanced Moving Object Detection system. All three systems operate using data from the rear wide view camera, which delivers a clear image no matter what the weather thanks to an in built wash and blow dry function. There will be Around View Monitor (AVM) which gives the driver a multicamera helicopter view to aid parking.

These systems are incorporated into the new Note's enhanced Connect satellite navigation, Bluetooth and audio system. Now benefiting from a larger 5.8-inch touch-screen display, the latest system includes Google 'Send to Car' navigation software allowing routes planned at home to be transferred directly to the car. Additional connected services include Google Points of Interest (POI), nearest fuel prices, plus flight and weather information.

You can also add Blind Spot warning and Lane Departure warning which is currently unheard of in this class of car.

There is choice of two petrol engines and one diesel – the entry-level 1.2-litre petrol unit produces 80PS at 6,000 rpm and 110Nm at 4,000 rpm.

Nissan quote a combined fuel economy of 4.7L/100km(60.1mpg), while CO2 emissions are 109g/km. There is a more powerful 1.2-litre engine which outputs 98PS at 5,600 rpm and 142Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. CO2 emissions are quotes as 99g/km with the manual gearbox (119g/km with CVT transmission). Fuel consumption is 4.3L/100km(65.7mpg) (with manual transmission) on the combined cycle.

The diesel unit is the familiar four-cylinder 1.5-litre turbo diesel that outputs 90PS with emissions of 95g/km of CO2 and offers a fantastic combined fuel economy figure of 3.6L/100km(78.5mpg).

The new MINI Hatch is bigger than its predecessor with an increased footprint at 3,821mm long (MINI Cooper S is 3,850mm), 1,727mm wide and 1,414mm tall it is 98mm longer, 44mm wider and 7mm taller.

The wheelbase has been extended by 28mm, while the track width has been enlarged at the front by 42mm and at the rear by 34mm. There is more room on inside with enhanced shoulder space and foot wells. The front seats have a wider range of adjustments and wider choice of materials; it is also easier to access the rear. The boot

volume has been increased by than 30 per cent to 211 litres and the rear bench seat back can be split 60:40 basis.

The interior also sees a complete resign on the dashboard, the most noticeable being the instrument cluster on the steering wheel. Speed, revs and fuel level are displayed on vertically

arranged circular dials.

The speedometer scale includes a colour panel for messages and vehicle status displays. The central instrument now has extended functionality with either a four-line TFT display as standard or optional colour screen up to 8.8-inches showing vehicle functions, infotainment, naviga-

tion and MINI Connected services.

Keyless-go is now standard across the MINI Hatch range. The start/stop toggle switch located in the middle of the centre console features a heartbeat illumination which pulses before the engine is started.

A number of switches have been relocated for

improved usability, including those for the electric windows, which are now integrated into the door trim.

The MINI Hatch is now available with LED headlamps for both dipped and main beam plus Keyless-go is now standard across the range.

The new MINI Hatch features three all-new engines, all featuring TwinPower Turbo Technology and promising an increase performance and efficiency over the equivalent outgoing engine.

There is a choice of four engines, including

three all-new engines, all featuring TwinPower Turbo Technology. There is the 1198cc 102hp/ 180Nm petrol (One Hatch), 1496cc 95hp/ 220Nm diesel (One D Hatch), 1499cc 136hp/ 220 Nm petrol (Cooper Hatch), 1496cc 116hp/ 270Nm diesel (Cooper D Hatch) and 1998cc 192hp/ 280Nm petrol (Cooper S Hatch).

A six-speed manual transmission comes as standard with the choice of a six-speed automatic transmission option with each engine – both gearboxes are new to the MINI and feature stop/ start systems.
