THE dream of Louth GAA establishing its home base at at a state-of-the-art stadium in DkIT are over after it was confirmed on Monday night that the project has been scrapped. Louth County Board revealed the news at their monthly meeting on Monday night, while at the same time DkIT released a statement on the matter with rising financial costs as the reason behind the decision. Louth GAA will now look to redevelop the current County Grounds in Drogheda as an alternative, after three years spent trying to get the project off the ground. The planned new ground was to hold 12,000 which could have been increased to
15,000 at a later date. It was to include 4,000 seats, floodlights, dressing rooms and indoor facilities. The original plan envisaged Louth playing their 2014 National League games at the new venue. From a DkIT perspective, the new venture would have had the effect of improving facilities for students in the college and turn the college into a centre of excellence for sport. The cost was expected to be €6m, with DkIT providing €3m and Louth GAA and Croke Park €1.5m each. However, delegates at Monday night’s meeting were told that the costs had spiralled and the project was no longer being pursued. Continued on page 10
