Hole-in-one treble for local golfers

A HOLE-IN-ONE in one is every golfers dream but unfortunately for most that dream rarely becomes reality as the odds are stacked against getting the little white ball into the hole in just a single shot.

However, three local enthusiasts are celebrating after beating the odds on the same course at Killen Park in the space of a few short weeks.

According to the Royal and Ancient “Golfers Handbook 2001” the chances of a male professional or top amateur scoring an ace are 3,708 to 1 against; a female professional or top amateur 4,648 to 1; and an average golfer no less than 42,952 to 1.

Byrne helps Ireland to Rules win

LOUTH GAA star, Ciaran Byrne did his country proud on Saturday night when he helped Ireland to victory over Australia in the International Rules clash.

The game at Breffni Park in Cavan, saw the Louth Village man earn a starting place and he helped Ireland to claim victory on a 57 to 32 scoreline.

Ciaran, who lines out with St Mochtas, will be hoping to complete the series victory when the teams meet in Croke Park on Saturday night.

Night out ends with frightening ordeal

A night out for four friends ended with a frightening ordeal as a man attempted to rob one and assaulted two in Dundalk town centre.

Mantas Bielskis of 26 Riverside Drive, Dundalk, denied the charges against him when he appeared at the local District Court.

However, after his evidence was described as untruthful by Judge Flann Brennan he was sentenced to a total of 16 months.

The defendant admitted public order charges following an incident on the same evening when he banged on the bonnet of a squad car and asked a Garda to fight him.

The court heard evidence from three male witnesses who had been

attending a going-away party in Muirhevnamor on the night of August 13, 2011. They later went into town with another female friend to get food in a take-away on River Lane.

As two of the men were walking from their car, they were approached by the defendant who demanded money from one who then hit him on the face.

The two friends left the scene but returned to the take-away a few minutes later to join their other two friends.

Shortly afterwards, the defendant entered the premises, attempted to strike one of the men and then threw a chair which grazed one of them.

As three of the friends left the shop, the de-

fendant cornered one man and struck him a number of times, knocking him to the ground and continuing to kick him.

One of the friends alerted a passing patrol car and Gda Sean Finnegan stated that when he arrived he sawthe defendant standing in the middle of the street.

He banged his hands on the bonnet, told the Garda to go ‘f***’ himself and then asked him to fight.

Gda Finnegan stated that the defendant was highly intoxicated and he was arrested for his own safety.

In evidence, the defendant stated that on the night in question he had left a friend’s apartment and that he was

drunk. He added that he had an argument with staff in the take-away but that he did not assault anyone.

Mr Bielskis, who has been living in Ireland for ten years and has a four-year-old daughter, accepted that he had an argument with a Garda and that this was not acceptable behaviour.

Defence barrister, Irene Sands, argued that the three men who gave evidence were mistaken in identifying her client as the assailant. She added that her 25-yearold unemployed client admitted the public order offences.

However, Judge Flann Brennan ruled that he had no doubt that Mr Bielskis did attempt to rob one of the men and

Byrne stars for Ireland

2013 is a year that will live long in the memory of Louth Village teenager Ciaran Byrne.

The St Mochtas star forward has enjoyed a stellar year which began with a call up to the Louth Senior Football team and ended with a call up to the Irish team for the International Rules test. In between there was also the small matter of agreeing a move to Aussie Rules Melbourne side Carlton on a two year deal.

The talented teenager started for Ireland in their 57-35 victory over the Aussies and he admits he was surprised when manager Paul Earley told him that he was in the starting line up.

“I found out on Friday evening that I was going to start and I was

completely surprised to be honest. I was nervous but also excited and very proud to play for my country.” explained Ciaran.

“I was slightly disappointed with my performance to be honest but I improved after a slow start and managed

to get a couple of scores in the game. The game wasn’t quite as intense as I thought it would be as I don’t think the Aussies played as well as they can do.

“It takes a while to get used to the tackle part of the game as we wouldn’t have that in Gaelic but I learnt a lot during our training camp and hopefully I’ll be picked to play a part in the second test this weekend in Croke Park.” he added.

Byrne will meet up with his new Carlton teammates in November tp trave; to Arizona in America for a high altitude training camp before returning home to his family for Christmas. The following month he will be back in Melbourne where

the hard work starts in earnest as he starts pre season training.

However before all that Ciaran got a chance to put on the blue and yellow St Mochtas jersey for one last time this season as he was due to line up for the Louth Village outfit in their crucial play-off match against Naomh Fionnbarra last night. The game had been due to take place last Thursday but to Byrne’s great relief it was moved due to his involvement with the Irish team.

Warning to look after pets at Halloween

Pet owners are being urged to take extra care with their animals’ welfare in the lead up to Halloween as animal welfare shelters prepare

for a busy period ahead.

Louth SPCA officer Fiona Squibb in her time as an officer has seen some horrific things but gave advice to pet owners on how to avoid tragedy.

“No matter how long

I am in this game I am still surprised at what people can think-of to do to animals,” said Fiona who has found the burnt remains of a kitten in a bonfire among many other incidents of

animal cruelty.

While the increased access to fireworks can sometimes lead to incidents of acute cruelty to animals, some pet owners can find themselves needlessly panic-strick-

en around this time of year.

Fiona is appealing to people to make appropriate preparations to ensure their animals’ safety in the coming weeks as they expect the usual increase in lost animals. The bangers and fireworks are getting bigger and louder and unsecured animals will runaway if fright-

ened, she explained.

Dogs in particular will keep running to flee an area if the loud noises are continuous and animal welfare officers find a lot of dogs and panic stricken owners after Halloween. “After Halloween people are frantically looking for their animals but it could all be very easily avoided.

You just need to take the

time to prepare”, said Fiona.

Some of the steps outlined by Fiona include simply taking animals inside the home during the period, or giving them distractions to the loud noises such as keeping a radio, means the bangs may not be so frightening or giving an extra bone to chew on. Other measure pet

owners can take include Calm Aid or pheromone which can be gotten from Vets that help clam animals nerves.

A table quiz is taking place in the Clan na Gael clubrooms on October 25 to help raise funds and there will also be a raffle. A table of four costs €20 and the quiz master will kick things off at about 8.30pm.

Quantum workers gear up or special reunion

A group of former employees from one of Dundalk’s best known factories are organising a major reunion for March of next year.

The event is designed to bring together the workers from Quantum with March 1 pencilled in as the gathering which is cer-

tain to be very popular.

As one of the major employers in Dundalk for over 15 years Quantum started from a small base in the Coe’s Road in 1990 and expanded its business supplying high tech storage devices to the IT industry.

Moving to its new fac-

tory in the Finnabair Industrial estate at its height it employed over 500 people as well as the many individuals who passed through the doors during the time it was in production.

Unfortunately Quantum closed its doors in late 2006 leaving behind a

legacy of a fantastic place to work as well as a very close knit work force.

After the final shutdown many of the workforce stayed in contact and have met up in groups regularly over the years.

One suggestion that kept arising was that a reunion of the full workforce

School garden adds to aura of creativity and learning

The project ‘Redeemer is Greener- Our Back Garden of Hopes Dreams and Wishes is a biodiversity project geared to creating a habitat for bees and butterflies. Currently approximately 18% of butterfly species in Ireland are threatened due to a loss of habitat. In addition, six species of bees are also endangered.

Equally the new outdoor classroom is a habitat for children working together to make a difference in their school environment through dedicated team work.

All the classes in the school have contributed to the garden and developed practical growing skills, while sharing the excitement of creating a new feature for the school. Teacher Cathy McArdle spoke of how enriching the garden experience had been for all.

“It has shown me the importance of integration of subjects art and culture in providing valuable learning experience and teamwork”, she noted.

The garden was officially launched last Friday during a Samhain festival in which teachers and students prepared a unique drama which was facilitated by Sharon McArdle. Parents and friends enjoyed the the colourful show of art and drama despite the rain which failed to dampen peoples spirits.

The Samhain celebrates summer’s end when we say goodbye to the old year and greet the traditional Irish New Year that comes at the end of October.

Bush students host International Day

Many families from different cultures and races gathered on Saturday October 19 at Cooley Complex to celebrate the first International fun day.

Transition Year students from Bush Post Primary were very much behind the project that

attracted a huge crowd.

The complex was a hive of activity with drumming workshops, Tai chi presentations, Chinese lantern painting and various cultural dances including African and Irish.

Guests were invited to taste ethnic cuisine, learn about a variety of customs and traditions

and also enjoy a cup of tea. The project raised awareness and celebrated the traditional and diverse cultures within the Cooley peninsula, 25 in all. All traditions and cultures were united in the celebrations for the whole community. It was a great opportunity to bring together different cultures and a great

day was had by all.

One of the main events was ‘World Cup’ blitz for 5th and 6th class from local primary schools with each school representing a World Cup team.

Carlingford boys representing Lithuania and Dulargy girls representing Sweden came out victorious.

Blackrock Fun day

An event to raise funds for Aware and the Gary Kelly Centre will be held on Saturday October 26 in association with Blackrock AC, Rock Celtic and Rock Fitness.

The event at Rock Celtic will feature a children’s sports day from 10am to 11am, and an adult and teen bootcamp and MetaFIt class from 11am to Noon.

The organisers are asking for donations.

The Irish debaters from Colaiste Ris began this year’s Irish debating campaign with a double victory in Monaghan last Wednesday night.

The school, who have won both junior and senior All-Ireland titles in recent years in Comórtas Díospóireacht Uí Chadhain, the national Irish debating championship organised by Gael Linn, delivered commanding performances in both sections to progress to the next round of the competition.

Trying to overcome drug problem

A man who is battling to overcome a drug problem told Dundalk District Court that he had a special chip inserted into his system in order prevent him taking illegal substances.

James Butterly of Chapel Lane, Tullyallen, Drogheda, pleaded guilty to a possession

charge after being found with a small quantity of heroin.

Insp Martin Beggy told the court that on July 12 last year, the defendant was seen talking to the driver of a parked car - a man known to Gardai.

They subsequently searched Mr Butterly and found €1,100 and

a phone, along with a wrap of tinfoil which contained the remains of heroin.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client is struggling with ill-health having developed diabetes and was involved in a road traffic accident.

He stated that on occasion he

had dabbled with drugs but was clean at present. He had two previous convictions for possession of cannabis.

Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case to January 15 for Probation Report and told the defendant to look after his health.

Man is deeply ashamed after spitting at Gardai A 28-year-old man who took refuge in alcohol after a long-term relationship came to an end saw a night out conclude with him spitting at a Garda.

Emmet Grogan of Muchgrange, Greenore pleaded guilty to an assault and public order charges arising from the incident on July 2 this year.

Dundalk District Court heard that Gardai were called to a licenced premises in Carlingford after the defendant was refused entry. When they arrived Mr Grogan was very drunk and unable to hold himself up.

When Gardai tried to arrest

him he became obstructive and pepper spray had to be used. On the way back to the station the defendant, who has 15 previous convictions, spat at a Garda.

Solicitor, Niall Lavery, stated that his 28-year-old client was deeply ashamed of his behaviour and apologised for his actions.

“He has just come out from a long-term relationship and took refuge in alcohol. He had been refused entry for a good reason and he offers a genuine apology.

He has €200 which he would like to offer as a token of his remorse.

“It was a drunken incident that got out of control rather than something of criminal intent. He thought he was a victim of wrongdoing but clearly his judgement was impaired and he was the author of his own misfortune”, added Mr Lavery.

“He has previous convictions and that is a concern but I would ask that you consider a report as he has successfully completed Community Service on a previous occasion”, said the solicitor in addressing the judge.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a total of 150 hours Community Service in lieu of four months.

Crosscause looking for donations to fill aid truck

BLACKROCK’S Crosscause charity have been helping underprivileged children in Romania for over ten years now and with Christmas fast approaching they are currently in the process of filling their Aid Truck which will make it’s way to Casa Bridget in Nicoresti in less than three weeks time.

Last year saw the aid trucks end of year run carried a fantastic amount of food, toys, wheelchairs, nappies, clothes etc which were of great use to the foundation, needy

villagers and local schools and hospitals.

The highlight of the truck was a massive wood burner which was used to heat the whole foundation, saving thousands of euros every year. Conor Hughes, co founder of Crosscause, hopes that the people of Co. Louth will be as generous this time around.

“We are asking for people to help us out with some much needed products which will make a huge difference to the lives of the people in Casa Bridget and also the poor and needy around the nearby vil-

lages. We have a long list of stuff that we would love to bring out to Romania and we have a little less than two weeks to go to fill our truck.” explained Conor.

“We are looking for food, toiletries, computers, carpet, two garage doors, sofa, exercise bike, new toys, clothes [winter], boots [winter], blankets, roofing material, fencing material, wallpaper, computer desks and chairs, bookcases, wardrobes, salt for water filter, nappies for both children and adults and washing machines.

“The aim is to get as many items

from this list on to the truck as possible and we would ask people to make sure that all the items are working ok and fit for use. The people around Louth have been great to us so far and hopefully that will continue to be the case for our final truck load of 2013”, urged Conor.

New ambulance for Dundalk Order of Malta The Dundalk unit of the Order of Malta will have a special blessing of their upgraded second ambulance outside Mill St hall on October 27 at 4pm. Fr Mark O’Hagan will perform the blessing.

David Caldwell who is PRO for the local Order of Malta branch says that the purchase of a new ambulance is traditionally associated with a blessing and thanked Fr O’Hagan for his assistance.

“We have two ambulances in the Dundalk branch of the Order of Malta both of which are obviously vital for the service we provide.

One of the ambulances needed upgrading and I’ve been on the lookout for a decent replacement for a couple of months now. Thankfully we’ve sourced one and it is ready to replace the old one. Traditionally a new ambulance gets blessed and we are thankful to Fr Mark O’Hagan who is doing it for us”, noted David.

The Order of Malta Ambulance Corps is a voluntary ambulance and first aid organisation operating all throughout the country.

The Order of Malta is engaged in teaching first aid, providing ambulance cover at large events, patient transport, community and nursing services. The Order of Malta has 4,000 volunteers throughout the Island of Ireland

The Order of Malta do not receive any State funding to carry out their important and potentially life saving work at various events throughout Dundalk, but instead rely solely on the support and generosity of people from their fundraisers. This year the Order of Malta have had successful fundraisers through their flag days, bag-packing in the Longwalk Shopping Centre and bucket collection in Oriel Park. Dundalk’s most famous directorial son is to have an award named after him thanks to a new initiative launched in DKIT. The Section of Creative Media in the college has announced the launch of the annual John Moore Film Award.

This award will be given to the best short film made by students on the 3rd or 4th year of the BA & BA (Hons) in Video & Film Production, as chosen by former Pearse Park resident John Moore.

John Moore

A Dundalk native, John Moore attended Dublin Institute of Technology and studied Film & Broadcasting. After graduating, he wrote and directed a series of short films in Ireland

and went on to direct several commercials, one of which brought him to the notice of 20th Century Fox. To date, Moore has made five films for 20th Century Fox:Behind Enemy Lines (2001), Flight of the Phoenix (2004), The Omen (2006),Max Payne (2008) and A Good Day to Die Hard (2013).

The award will be presented yearly at the students’ graduation ceremony, starting this November 2013. This is a further develop-

ment of the relationship between the DKIT Section of Creative Media and John Moore. In 2011, Blaine Rennicks, a 4th year film student in the Section won an internship on the set of and A Good Day to Die Hard in Budapest It is envisaged thatP this award will also leadL to possible internshipsT on future films with John on his upcoming films. Cathy honoured in New York

Dundalk singer Cathy Maguire is to be honoured at the County Louth Society of New York’s 107th Annual Dinner Dance on November 9.

This tops off a great year for the singer who has been based in New York for the past four years. Earlier this year she released a new album entitled ‘Ireland in Song’ which has been getting favourable reviews stateside. She also presents her own television show television

show ‘Out of Ireland’, which commenced on PBS last month and is currently being shown on transatlantic Aer Lingus flights.

Posting from her Facebook page Cathy was understandable delighted to have received the invitation.

“Absolutely delighted and excited to be the Honoree at the County Louth Society of New York 107th Annual Dinner Dance this year on Nov 9th!

Going to be a fantastic night of dinner, cocktails and dancing! And

of course, since I’m the honoree I’ll probably have to indulge in a song or two!!!

Cathy became a child star in the early 90s when she was invited

by Gerry Ryan to perform a live set on his radio program. This sparked a career that spanned numerous TV appearances and three albums by the time she was 17.

Patrick McMahon Ballybinaby Dundalk was recently presented with the runner up award in the National Farmyards competition in the livestock section. This nationwide competition covering the whole of the island of Ireland is run by the Irish Farmers Journal and sponsored by

FBD. It is now in its sixth year and is aimed at promoting tidy farmyards. It aims to enhance the beautiful rural landscape that we have with farmyards that are well maintained and as minimally intrusive to the landscape as possible.

Patrick is a suckler farmer in Ballybinaby in North Louth

producing weanlings and finished cattle from his Simmental herd. He has done an exceptional job in blending in the old farmyard with his growing new farmyard.

The hedges around the farmyard and fields are neatly trimmed giving the whole operation a clinical and well or-

dered appearance. The buildings are well maintained clean and tidy.

His safety statement is on display in his well organised workshop. Safety signs are in place and according to the judges “this farming operation is utterly safe for both man and beast.”

Launch of Little Women Stage One New-musical Group (SONG) held the official launch of the Irish premiere of ‘Little Women’, which will take place in An Tain Theature from Wednesday November 20 to Saturday 23 at 8pm.

Based on the infamous Louisa B Alcott novel, this Broadway musical features some fantastic music to complement the beautiful story of the four March Sisters.

AN Irish band who achieved huge critical acclaim in the 1990s has reformed and will be taking to the stage at The Spirit Store on November 7.

In the 90s, The Would Be’s infamously turned down 14 major labels to follow up their John Peel and Morrissey acclaimed debut single ‘I’m Hardly Ever Wrong’.

Standing by some admirable indie ethics, the band chose the most obscure label they were courted by.

They may not have reached their potential after that but their legacy was one that burned very brightly but all too quickly. John Peel, Morrissey, Steve Lemaq, Tony Clayton Lea, Ian Dempsey, Jim Carroll, BP Fallon, Rodney Binginhimer and Stuart Bailey fell for songs like ‘I’m Hardly Ever Wrong’, ‘My Radio Sounds Different in The Dark’ and ‘Funny Ha Ha’.

Hailing from the borders of Cavan, Meath and Louth, the band was formed by the Finnegan brothers (Mattie, Eamonn and Paul) and had an average age of 17 when the first single was released. Only 250 copies were pressed but it was enough to turn the heads of some very influential people. In his book ‘101 Irish Records (You Must Hear Before You Die)’, Irish rock journalist Tony Clayton Lea said: “It is rightly regarded as the best Irish indie pop single ever released”.

Dundalk on Ice returns for Christmas Ice skating will return to Dundalk’s Market Square this Christmas season and it is estimated that a combination of an improved skating experience combined with a reduction in ticket prices will lead to 30,000 people using the facility.

Dundalk on Ice will open up in the heart of the town centre in late November.

Making the announcement this week, Dundalk on Ice Project Manager, Martin McElligott said “I’m thrilled to confirm that Dundalk on Ice will officially open on Friday, November 29 coinciding with the Night of Lights and will remain open through to December 31.

“We have been working on this along with Dundalk Town Council and Dundalk BIDS since last July. Last year’s event brought 15,000 people into the town centre but there were a few lessons to be learned.

“Dundalk on Ice will face out onto the Market Square and the company supplying the rink, have also supplied the London Olympics and Harrod’s rooftop ice rink. It will ‘float’ on the Market Square surface and will be far superior in appearance.

“Also, we looked at affordability and decided that we should reduce ticket prices. School packages will also be available, within school hours.

We will also be offering promotions along with

local retailers Fiona Cunningham, Dundalk BIDS, which has Radioactive Grandma appearing in Spirit Store worked closely with Martin McElligott to bring Dundalk on Ice to fruition, said today: “Over 15,000 people visited the Ice Rink last year. Due to the reduction in ticket prices, special themed sessions such as One Direction and Disney, and in general a better skating experience, there is the potential to attract up to 30,000 visitors to the Market Square this Christmas season.

Hole-in-one on the treble From page 1 “I got my hole in one on Sunday July 21st – it is a date I will never forget.” he enthused.

“It was on the fourth hole, 160 yards and I hit a seven iron. I knew it was heading for the green but I didn’t see it go in as there is a wee dip in front of the green. However, when I got up it was in the hole.” he explained.

“It was a great feeling as I had been close a couple of times before but in 21 years playing golf that was my first hole in one.

“It is hard to get back on your game after that and the next hole was a par 4 but I took seven, so that says it all. It

does mess up the rest of your round, but I will put up with that”, laughed Dan. Colm Coburn who has been playing golf for six years scored his ace on the 17th hole in Killin Park and like Dan it was a moment he will savour for a long time to come.

“Every golfer dreams of getting a hole in one and I am absolutely delighted that I have finally got one after six years playing the game. I remember it was a bit windy so I knew I needed an extra club and took out my 3 wood”, said Colm.

“I knew as soon as I hit it that it was a decent shot and I seen it

bounce on the green and head towards the flag. You can’t actually see the hole from the tee so I wasn’t sure exactly how close it was”, he explained.

“My playing partners said to me that there was a chance it had gone in and there was great excitement walking up to the green.

When there was no sign of the ball on the green I knew it was in

the hole and I was absolutely thrilled”, he added.

The final member of the Killinbeg Hole in One club was Chris O’Hanlon who got his ace on the sixth hole on Saturday October 5. It was the beginning of a magical weekend for Chris as he was crowned the golfer of the year on the following evening.

“I’ve only been playing three years so I’m kind of lucky that I managed to get a hole in one relatively quickly in my golfing life. I hit a 7 iron of the 6th tee and as it landed on the green I can remember my playing partner Michael Mooney say-

ing that it was going to be very close to going in the hole”, explained Chris.

“We didn’t know for sure until we reached the green that it had gone in and when it was confirmed I was delighted. It could well be the only hole in one I’ll ever get but I’m just pleased that I’ve managed to get one at all.” he added. It was a great weekend for me personally as I was named golfer of the year in Killinbeg on the Sunday evening so I’ll definitely remember those couple of days for a while to come” Killinbeg captain Donard McCabe congratulated all three.

Annual Terry Fox Walk takes place in Omeath on Sunday AROUND the World every October, hundreds of thousands of people to organise walks all around the world to pay tribute to courageous Canadian, Terry Fox.Terry Fox was just 18 when he was diagnosed with a malignant tumour on his right leg which eventually resulted in amputation six inches above the knee.

Inspired by his experience, Terry decided to run the 8,500 km it takes to cross Canada to raise money for Cancer Research. He called the journey the Marathon of Hope and completed two thirds of the challenge before the cancer returned spreading to his lungs which forced him to abandon his trek. He died just a few

months later.

This Sunday in Omeath the Terry Fox Annual Walk for Cancer Research will take place at 3pm starting at Cornamucklagh House. Anybody interested in taking part in the walk (approx 3 mile) should contact Margaret or Tina Phillips on 0429375136.

Award for Louth Show THE Co. Louth Agricultural Show received the “Special Community Group” award at the recent Louth Business Awards.

The presentation of awards organised by Dundalk Chamber was held in the Fairways Hotel on Saturday October 19 and fifteen awards were presented overall to various businesses operating within the Dundalk environs.

What made this award even more special was the fact that it was the first time ever for the Co. Louth Agricultural Show to win an award which was totally unexpected.

Gala Ball, Chairperson of Dundalk Show Society Ltd Carmel Mee said “the committee was shocked when the result was announced but absolutely delighted to win such a prestigious award and on that basis, can look forward to improving on previous shows and towards organising the 125th Co. Louth Agricultural Show in Bellurgan Park on Sunday June 15 2014”.

She said that running and organising such a show relies so much on volunteers and community effort and this award recognises the preparation involved in an event which has a long history in the community.

Alfa Romeo have announced details of the new revised Alfa MiTO for 2014. It features a number of revisions, including the Uconnect five-inch, colour touch-screen infotainment system as standard across the range. There have been tweaks to the interior with a new dashboard and re-graded materials.

The exterior now features chromed front grille; titanium grey headlamp and tail lamps surrounds; tinted rear windows and a sports rear bumper.

The MiTo is available with four trim levels now available: ‘Sprint’, ‘Distinctive’, ‘Sportiva’ and ‘Quadrifoglio Verde’ (QV).

ALFA DNA is standard across all models, which allows the driver to adjust the steering effort and throttle response to suit via three modes. If fitted the ALFA SDC adaptive suspension and ALFA TCT transmission settings are also adjustable via the ALFA D.N.A. system.

The ‘Distinctive’ equipment highlights include 17-inch

alloy wheels; cruise control; rear parking sensors and a front centre arm rest. The MiTo ‘Sportiva’ gains 18-inch QV sports alloy wheels; a QV steering wheel and hand-brake lever (trimmed in black leather with green stitching); satineffect exterior highlights and special badges. The performance ‘QV’ model adds red, fourpiston Brembo brake callipers, SDC active suspension system, bespoke sports seats with uprated upholstery and special

QV wing badges.

There are now five turbocharged engines, all with Start&Stop technology – there are petrol units and two diesel.

On the petrol front it now starts with the 105hp 0.9 TwinAir Turbo and includes the 135hp 1.4 TB MultiAir (available with a manual or the Alfa TCT twin dry clutch transmission) and the 170hp 1.4 TB MultiAir QV. The two diesel units are the 85hp 1.3 JTDM-2 and the 120hp 1.6 JTDM-2 power plants.

The Sport gains a highgloss black finish for exterior body elements in the front and rear bumpers and the kidney grille slats. The interior features contrasting black and red accents with red contrast stitching on the sports steering wheel and the red trim rings in the inner circle of the instrument dials.

The Modern trim comprises matt chrome and satin highlight the exterior detailing. On the

inside there is light-coloured dashboard, complimented with a steering wheel in dark oyster (both also available in black).

Leather upholstery in oyster or black, and a choice of four trim surfaces with accent strips in Pearl Gloss Chrome, while the door panels are available in two-tone colours.

The Luxury model gains the Business Media Package – the exterior is detailed in chrome, which is also used on the interior, including the frame surrounding the audio and air conditioning system.

It also features high-gloss wood strips, leather seats with contrast.
