THE people of Dundalk will literally have the world at their feet on Friday night as the town is ho-ho ho-ping to enter the Guinness Book of World Records with over 4,000 people preparing for the Santa Run. Not only do all the people taking part have a chance to enter the Guinness Book of World Records but they will also be helping many charities around town with all proceeds going to worthy causes such as Lordship Children’s Respite Centre, North Louth Hospice, Mens Sheds, SNAP and SOSAD. Harp brewery site to provide 30 new jobs A NEW tenant on the former Harp Lager site in Dundalk is expected to create up to 30 full time jobs.

Cellulac, the first company to convert brewery facilities for the sustainable production of lactic acid from second generation (2G) feedstocks, announced on Tuesday an agreement to lease a 6.8 acre site.

The Irish Whiskey Company, which owns the site, is developing a distillery on the balance of the 13 acre site.

Cellulac intends to retrofit the facility and incorporate its end-toend chemical and process engineering platform to produce Lactic

Acid and Polylactic Acid for biodegradable plastics, Ethyl Lactate, a green solvent, and Sodium Lactate. The Company has recently commenced production of lactic acid at a pilot plant in Potsdam, Germany. It expects to ramp up production at the facility initially to 20,000 tonnes, which will have a value in excess of €40 million, for export by the end of 2015.

Operations will commence by June 2014 and the announcement has been welcomed by Gerard Brandon, CEO of Cellulac.

“Ireland has a worldwide reputation for quality food ingredients

derived from the agricultural sector. It is fitting, therefore, that we are at the forefront of the new bio-economy sector.

“With the support of the European Union we will convert, part of what was until recently, the second largest brewery in Ireland into what will be the largest producer of lactic acid from agricultural waste and dairy by-products. This will not only directly breathe new opportunity into Dundalk by creating 30 jobs, but it will also indirectly support agricultural jobs in the rural community and generate local taxes that will benefit the area”, he stated.

Eden’s evil microbe wins schools prize for science

Realt na Mara student Eden Leavy Cassidy wowed the judges at the Primary Schools Science Week competition with her eerie picture of an evil microbe which helped her win first prize in the 4th-6th Class category.

Fifth class pupil Eden won a student multi-pad tablet for herself as well as a free science show for the school which will take place in January.

The E-bug Primary Science “Design a Microbe” competition is designed to encourage students to find out more about the microbes in our body in a fun and interesting way and Eden was delighted to have won first prize with her picture.

“I decided to draw an evil microbe and I gave him a big square head with a small round mouth and nasty looking teeth. It took me about 20 minutes to do”, explained Eden.

“I thought the competition was fun and it

helped me learn about microbes. I know that a microbe is something very small inside your body such as viruses and bacteria which can only be seen with a microscope.

“They can be good or bad and the good ones can help us stay healthy by fighting off the bad microbes. Science is one of my favourite subjects and I was very happy to take part and win the competition. I want to thank my teachers Sile Holland and Mary Rust for everything”, she added.

Miss Rust who is the science co-ordinator in Realt na Mara congratulated Eden and spoke about the importance of teaching science to primary school students.

“I think it plays a huge role in developing a child’s mind and it makes them ask questions and discover how things work. If taught correctly science can be fascinating for children and it brings out a side to children which you don’t get to see in other

subjects”, explained Miss Rust.

Miss Rust is currently busy preparing her class for their upcoming debut appearance in the RDS Science fair which takes place in January.

The pupils are currently working on their project which aims to find out if music being played in the background has any effect on concentration levels whilst studying.

Meanwhile there was further success for Realt na Mara at the Taste of Louth awards in the Marshes shopping centre with 5th Class pupil Hui-Ci Yu picking up an art set and a €100 voucher for winning the ‘Design a Cupcake’ competition. HuiCi’s delicious cupcake wowed the judges as she picked up top prize in her section.

Film goes national after local success

The immense popularity of Dundalk’s premier of the religions film taking the silver screen by storm has prompted the film to go on national release, with the two Dundalk organisers at the helm.

This September Ollie Bradley and James McCrave brought the unexpected hit film The Triumph about the reports of apparitions in Medjugorje to the Dundalk Cinema.

Each of the four nights sold out and the proceeds that were made from ticket sales was donated to the Voluntary Medjugorje Mountain Rescue Team. A €3,500 cheque was presented to the team by Ollie and James during their

pilgrimage there in October.

The men received considerable interest in the film from all over Ireland while they were promoting its Dundalk screenings.

Coupled with the success of the four night run in Dundalk the IMC decided to roll out the film across

the country.

From this Friday The Triumph can be seen across the country and will also be screening again in Dundalk from this Friday for seven days.

The Dundalk men’s efforts and success have not gone unnoticed. Ollie and James have plans

to host two special pilgrimages in 2014. The first group will travel on April 30 with Fr Paul Montague of the Holy Redeemer Parish, Dundalk.

Later in October 2014 a second group will travel with Fr Mark O Hagan Administrator of St Patrick’s Parish.

Christmas Exhibition in Carlingford The very popular Carlingford Christmas Fair taking place next weekend will host an exhibition from well known artists.

The 20-year-old event will open on Friday 29th November at 8.00pm in the traditional location of St Michaels Hall in the centre of the village.

Artists will present their annual Christmas Art Exhibition, which will include paintings in oils, acrylics, watercolour and mixed media. The fair is free to the public and promises an exciting variety of homemade breads and cakes, wooden and ceramic gifts, children’s gifts, cute cards and designer jewellery.

Delicious mulled wine and mince pies will be served form 8 pm on Friday night with Santa on hand with gifts for the children.

The public is invited to browse for that extra special present until 10pm. It will continue on Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 6pm offering Irish produce, arts and craft.

Man over-stepped boundaries A Dundalk man who was described as over-stepping the boundaries was warned not to take the law into his own hands.

Hope Oderinde of 50 Woodville Manor, Tom Bellew Ave, was given the warning at Dundalk District Court after pleading guilty to criminal damage at a neighbour’s house.

The court heard that in the early hours of November 23, 2012, the defendant had returned to a neighbour’s house from a night out when a scuffle ensued with neighbours in a house.

The next day he noticed that his mobile phone was missing and he went to a house in the hope of locating it but the occupants of the

house didn’t open the door and told him to leave. He returned and broke a window of the house, an action which he regrets.

Gardai were called and a short time later encountered the defendant who admitted the offence.

Barrister, James Egan, stated that his 20-year-old is a talented young man who is hoping to put the incident behind him. He is a father of one and is expecting another child. Compensation of €600 was paid.

Judge Conall Gibbons stated that this was a very serious offence and he convicted and fined the defendant €200 as he rejected the suggestion of seeking a Probation Report.

“It is very serious for somebody to go out with a claw hammer and I don’t need anyone to tell me what to do. It is disgraceful and unacceptable and he has over-stepped the boundaries.

“You can’t take the law into your own hands and I think this is lenient as others would consider putting the defendant away. If you have an issue with somebody you get on to the Gardai and let them investigate. It would be impossible for me to allow somebody to take the law into their own hands”, added Judge Gibbons.

Mr Oderinde also pleaded guilty to stealing curtains valued at €28 from Penneys in The Marshes on February 13 this year.

Recently published figures have revealed that Louth’s level of youth unemployment is among the highest in the country.

It has emerged that there currently 15,789 on the Live register in Louth. Youth unemployment remains high in the county with almost 2,500 people under 25 years of age on some sort of social welfare support in the County while there are 13,309 over 25 on Social Welfare.

There are more than 1,400 people under 26 years old claiming either jobseekers benefit allowance or credits in Dundalk alone. However Minster Joan Burton admitted that the true number on the live register is higher still as the figures released did not include all benefits or claims awaiting decision.

Attention turned to the announcement of the extension of the Jobs Bridge programme and its ability to boost employment.

A breakdown of the number of people engaged in the jobs bridge programme from the Department of Social Welfare revealed that since the programme began in July 2011, 574 people in Co Louth have participated in an internship.

Of these, 408 have already finished an internship while there are 166 currently working under a Jobsbridge scheme. However the vast majority of these, 103, are working in the public sector, 27 working directly with the Louth Local authorities and 25 people have already completed an internship in a section of the public sector in Co Louth.

community/volunteer sector.

The Government and local authorities have been criticised for taking on interns while the recruitment embargo continues. There have also been questions over the nature of employment offered and the type of skills training that has been offered. Sinn Fein’s Aengus O Snodaigh described it as “ways of filling vacancies on the cheap,” and said that they displace real jobs and exploit the interns.

However, a recent independent study of the scheme found that about 40% of those who undertook a Jobsbridge internship found a paying job afterwards. Minister Burton defended the scheme stating that interns gained vital, high quality work place experience.

More than 100 employers are registered with the Jobsbridge programme in County Louth.

Local Garda, Joanne Moore received the Sportstar award in the Ladies Football category.

Joanne played in the full-back line on the Cavan team which won the 2013 Intermediate All Ireland and was hugely influential in the defeat of Tipperary. Joanne also plays a pivotal role for her club which is vying for an Ulster title. A native of Cavan Joanne is a Garda stationed in Dundalk, Co Louth. The 20th Annual Credit Union Garda Sportstar award ceremony took place on Friday November 15 in Westport Co Mayo. The awards are presented to Garda members who have achieved in their chosen sporting areas, locally, nationally and internationally.

Almost 400 boxes which equates to 3029 parcels were loaded on to a truck on Monday morning on the Avenue Rd bound for various countries in Africa to provide a Christmas gift for underprivileged children.

Damien who has been a driving force for the shoebox appeal in Co Louth for ten years now explained the importance of the shoebox appeal and how it helps poor children around the world.

“Every year we ask people to fill shoe boxes with toys, sweets, stationery and toiletries to be sent to youngsters in poverty stricken countries across Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe.

“For many the gift-

County Fresh for giving us this building as we would have been in serious trouble without it”, said Damien.

“There are so many people who have helped us out and I have to also say thank you to Stephen in Driftwood, David and Ann in Horseware Pat in Value Centre and especially Marita Bellew who has been down here every single day helping us to pack all the shoeboxes and sort everything out. Her dedication has been brilliant”

The parcels are currently making their way to Burundi, Rwanda, Swaziland, Congo and Mozambique with plenty of children about to receive gifts which will make their Christmas a whole lot brighter.

This is Damien’s final year helping out with the shoebox appeal and although it has involved a lot of hard work and time he says he has enjoyed every single year of it.

“It is with a heavy

heart that I finish my stint with the shoebox appeal after ten years involvement but I’ve been advised to step away by my doctor due to health reasons and I think the time has come to step aside. I will be here for whoever takes up the role next to help and advise them in whatever way I can and I’d like to thank again everyone who has helped out in anyway to our shoebox appeal over the last decade”, acknowledged Damien.

Louth will be doubly represented this weekend in the GAA Leinster Club football Finals with Geraldines taking on Naomh Olaf in the Leinster Intermediate Club Final which throws in at 2pm on Sunday December 1 while Hunterstown Rovers take on Two Mile House in Newbridge on the same date at 2pm also.

Both sides have had a magnificent season so far they will be hoping all their hard work over the season will be rewarded with a Leinster Club Championship medal on Sunday afternoon.

Chaotic scenes in church during Funeral Mass

THERE were chaotic scenes at a funeral mass in St Nicholas’s church on Monday last when an armed gang stormed in to the church wielding axes and sledge hammers. Fr Neill O’Donoghue who was celebrating the mass said that it was a “miracle that no one was hurt.”

The funeral Mass of 26 year old Martin Ward took

place on Monday afternoon in Dundalk. The church was close to full to capacity when a fight broke out at the rear of the church as a gang of men entered the church and aiming to attack people attending the funeral.

Fr O’Donoghue who was on the altar could not see the events clearly but understands that as a fight broke out an axe was thrown through the back left door before the armed

gang barged in. The commotion caused the congregation to surge forward.

“There was pandemonium.

The church was more or less full and people stampeded towards the doors. Thank God no one was hurt”, said the priest.

Fr O’Donoghue expressed his dismay at the events saying that the funeral mass of Mr Ward was a family man, and the funeral was attended

by his wife and three young children who witnessed the events. “It was terrible for his poor children,” said Fr. O’Donoghue.

Gardaí were called to the scene but the armed gang had fled. After some time Fr O’Donoghue continued the funeral Mass.

“We continued the mass after about 20 minutes. We could not let the man go without a funeral Mass and he

needed to be buried”, he said.

The Mass continued but there was a heavy Garda presence at the church and in Bridge Street. Gardai also escorted the funeral procession to the Dowdallshill Graveyard where they maintained a presence during the burial.

There were no further incidents in relation to the attack.

While no one attending the funeral was injured but there was damage to the church.

undalk Stadium is delighted to be celebrating 10 years in business on Friday November 29 after opening its doors for the first time on that date in 2003.

The history of both greyhound and horse racing in Dundalk and the journey Dundalk Stadium has been on to get to this point will be celebrated on the night. Racing took place at the old greyhound track on The Ramparts for almost 70 years, and following its closure on November 20, 2000, there was mild concern that the sport might be lost to the town forever.

No-one need have worried as within three short years, racing was back.

In place of the Ramparts track, which was show-

ing the signs of decay long before its closure, was a spanking new stadium, complete with an ultra-modern grandstand, with its elevated viewing area, restaurant, bars and offices.

Four years later, horse racing was added to the stadium's schedule, the opening meeting taking place on the country's first all-weather track on August 26, 2007. It is thriving, now staging more meetings per year than any other track in Ireland.

The anniversary celebration night will kick off with a 7/8 horse race card followed by 8 greyhound races which include five finals and three open races and live music until late afterwards.

There will also be a cutting of the cake ceremony and hopefully a slice for everyone. A commemorative race card will be available on the night with lots of

information about our history and of course some very interesting photographs.

Short Story Competition

Clermont Chorale will get the Christmas festivities off to a musical start when they perform a concert of seasonal favourites in St Nicholas’(R.C.) Church, Bridge St., Dundalk on Sunday December 8 at 4pm.

To celebrate their sponsorship of the children’s categories at this year’s Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards, Specsavers recently launched a short story competition for children and teens up to the age of 16. The closing date for entries is 29 November 2013.

Clermont, now in its 11th year, continues its tradition of performing a wide range of musical styles in beautiful settings. This year the choir has chosen to perform their Christmas concert in St Nicholas’ Church where they will be joined by members of the Fr McNally Chamber orchestra, who will feature in some well- loved pieces with the choir, including Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, and Mozart’s Laudate Dominum (soloist Karyn McCooey). The chamber group will also perform The Capriol Suite by Warlock and will join clarinet soloist Bernie Balfe in Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet.

High standard of debating by local teams

A high standard of debating by two Dundalk schools was witnessed at the first round heat of the Gael Linn competition, Comórtas an Phiarsaigh held in St Louis Secondary School, on Monday, 18 November, and has ensured their qualification to the next round.

In the junior section of the competition that afternoon, the girls from St. Louis Secondary School went head to

head in a lively debate with neighbouring schools, De La Salle College and Dundalk Grammar School, along with a team from The Royal School, Cavan.

The topic that afternoon was ‘Tuileann imreoirí sacair a gcuid airgid’ (Soccer players earn their money) and many points on both sides were put forward by the young orators. The standard of debating was very high for

a first round heat. Past experience of the competition, however, stood to the home team from Dún Lughaidh (Eimer Nic Aoidh, Úna Ní Mhaitiú and Eimear Ní Sheidhin) and the boys from De La Salle College (Fiontán Ó Meacháin, Brian Mac Giolla Chainnigh and Rian Ó Dúill), who were chosen to go through to the second round.

Later on in the evening, the senior teams from the same

and De La Salle College (Críostóir Ó hEochagáin, Mícheál Ó Maoláin and Pilib Mac Aonghusa) teams was what won over the adjudicators in their favour.

The speakers from these successful teams, along with their hardworking and enthusiastic teachers, look forward now to the challenge of the next round, which will take place before the Christmas holidays.

Historic day as deacon ordained in Dundalk Man admits passing two counterfeit €50 notes

It was a historic day for the Redemptorist Mater House of Formation in Dundalk as their first deacon was ordained in St Patricks Cathedral on Saturday morning. Maciej Zacharek is the first seminarian to be ordained from the religious institution newly established in Dundalk.

Maciej is 32 years old and originally comes from Wygoda, Poland.

He began his religious formation in Redemptorist Mater Seminary in Washington D.C., but

Cardinal Wuerl of the Washington Diocese asked Maciej to come to Ireland to help start the new House of Formation in Dundalk.

He arrived in 2012 when the seminary was formerly established and has recently completed a License in Theology at St Patrick’s College in NUI Maynooth working under Bishop Leahy and has begun to study for a Doctorate in Theology there.

Deacons are the men in the final stage of their training for the priest-

hood, usually they will spend approximately one year as a deacon before being ordained as a priest. Deacons can baptise, witness marriages, perform funerals and burials and preach the homily and are considered clerics along with priests and bishops.

Maciej was incardinated into the Archdiocese of Armagh and will serve in the parishes of this Archdiocese. However, he is also available, at the discretion of the Archbishop of Armagh, to serve as mis-

sionaries in other parts of Ireland and internationally, House of Formation in Dundalk has nine seminarians training for priesthood hailing from the UK, Europe, South America and the USA and are all in their 20’s.

The Redemptoris Mater House of Formation aims to become one of Dundalk’s outstanding institutions and it can be expected to see more priests ordained in the diocese, and then working in the diocese as they progress in their vocations.

Curtains rise for Misremembered Man This Friday the curtains will rise on one of the funniest plays to come to Dundalk as the Misremembered Man comes to the Tain Theatre for two nights only. The play is an adaptation of the popular book by Christine McKenna, about a lonely man who responds to a lonely hearts advert in the local newspaper. The result is surprising, funny and touching. Local actors Kieran Rogers, Fiona Fay and David Lennon take on the plays main characters.

Audacity take to the stage at The Spirit Store

Three Dundalk DJs are moving up in the world as they take over the Spirit Store venue this November 29. The all female line-up featuring Mary McShane, Sarah Kirk and Stephenie began DJing together in the Spirit Store

bar, such was the success of the night they hosted a night in the venue in October which saw huge support for the show.

Mary McShane decided to form the collective after being asked to DJ at other

events and wanted to give it a go herself. Each of the women bring a different style and approach to the night which sees a considerable breadth of genres covered and musical tastes catered for. However despite any

differences in musical style, there is one thing they all have in common, bringing a sense of energy and fun to their events. “It is about having fun and not taking ourselves too seriously,” said Mary.

“ The Spirit is a great venue, it lets us be more creative with the sets. But it is the people who come to the shows that make it.” She added. Audacity take to the stage for a free show in the Spirit Store this Friday November 29.

Louth positive Dundalk’s Old Gaol Co mental health forum to celebrate 160 years

The Oriel Centre based at Dundalk’s Old Gaol, will mark the gaol’s forthcoming 160th year since it’s first intake of prisoners on January 1 1854 in it’s Gathering Event ‘Gaolers and Inmates’ at Dundalk Gaol on Sat 30th Nov. This Gathering event celebrates the history of Dundalk Gaol and will mark the start of the Oriel Centre’s Oral History Programme. It provides an opportunity for descendants and families of former inmates and workers of Dundalk Gaol to come together, recount and record their own stories, to visit the Gaol for a guided tour and have their stories recorded as a start of our Oral History collection for the Comhaltas Regional Centre’s Archive.

The event will celebrate the connection to the past while featuring an exhibition of photos / letters from prisoners, a book launch on the life of Diarmuid Lynch (inmate of Dundalk Gaol in 1917) and a perform-

A guided tour will take place on Friday November 29 from 10am to Noon and booking is necessary.

On the following day the ‘Inmates & Gaolers’ book launch, exhibition and music will be held at 7pm.

Coping with teenage tantrums can be very difficult and can impact on the mental health of both parents and siblings. The Louth positive mental health forum are offering families the chance to learn the coping mechanisms and strategies that can help manage adolescent anger.

The forum meeting will be presented on the night by Ger Matthews from the Dundalk Counselling Centre.

The Forum Chairperson Senator Mary Moran said “I am delighted with the success of the forum to date. This month’s discussion topic on coping with adolescent anger will discuss what anger is and how it is experienced. “ The Forum have held information briefings on Suicide awareness and coping strategies which was delivered by Garreth Phelan of the HSE. This was followed up by two Safetalk

courses and an information meeting was delivered by Garda John Brady on cyber-bullying which drew interest from adults and children alike.

The Dundalk Positive Mental Health Forum is an initiative for those who work in or have a particular interest in mental health issues and want to promote positive mental health awareness.

The aim is to link-up service providers and find solutions to any problems or gaps that they identify in the promotion of mental health in the county.

“This is an ideal opportunity for people to come along and join in the discussion on promoting positive mental health. Everyone is welcome and it is free of charge,” said Senator Moran.

The meeting takes place on Monday December 2 at 7.30 pm in the Pairc Naomh Brid, Dowdallshill GF and AC rooms Newry Road Dundalk.

The all new mini is unveiled

The all-new MINI has been revealed with a launch date scheduled for the spring of 2014.

The new MINI sits on a completely new front wheel drive platform which is set to be shared between other MINI models and those from BMW. The MINI is not so MINI, it is slightly bigger than the current model, the vehicle length increased by 98 millimetres, width by 44 millimetres, height by 7 millimetres and there is a longer wheelbase (+ 28 millimetres) with a larger track width (front + 42 millimetres, rear + 34 millimetres).

Which equates to a larger passenger cell, which benefits all four occupants, with a larger adjustment range at front and longer seat surface at rear (+ 23 millimetres); more shoulder room and foot space. The overall luggage compartment volume increased from 160 litres to 211 litres; rear backrest foldable with 60 : 40 split; optional storage package including luggage compartment floor which can be locked into place at varying points.

There is a new range of engines making up three model variants at launch: The MINI Cooper with 136 bhp 3-cylinder petrol engine, MINI Cooper S 192 bhp 4-cylinder petrol engine and MINI Cooper D with a 116 bhp 3-cylinder diesel engine. All mated to 6-speed manual gearboxes with the option of a 6-speed automatic transmission or sports automatic transmission. Efficiency has been improved with a reduction in fuel

consumption and emissions – yet an increase in performance. For example the MINI Cooper with automatic transmission: acceleration from 0-100kph/62mph is 2.6 seconds quick with an average fuel consumption 27 per cent lower.

You are able to set up your own vehicle dynamics with the new Driving Modes option, operated by a rotary switch at the base of the gearshift or selector

In addition to the standard setting MID mode, the modes SPORT and GREEN can be activated; choice of mode influences the characteristic curve of the accelerator and steering, as well as the shift times of the automatic transmission and the Dynamic Damper Control where these features are fitted; GREEN mode in conjunction with automatic transmission enables coasting with decoupled drivetrain.
