Blow for Louth as Derry take the Mick Fitzpatrick ‘shocked and heartbroken’ as Mickey Harte steps down as Louth manager

‘I didn’t see it coming’ admitted Louth GAA County Chairman, Peter Fitzpatrick who was left reeling when now former Louth GAA manager Mickey Harte informed him on Monday morning that he had decided to leave Louth to take up a three year term with Ulster champions Derry.

Harte along with his trusty assistant team coach Gavin Devlin made the decision to join Derry with the 71 year old Tyrone native explaining to Fitzpatrick that he wanted one last crack at winning an All Ireland Championship.

“Mickey rang me at 8pm on Sunday evening and asked could we meet up. I met him and Gavin in the Crowne Plaza on Monday morning at 10am and they told me that they had decided to leave Louth with immediate effect and he was leaving to take over the Derry footballers. I was shocked and hugely disappointed to be honest. I didn’t see it coming at all.

“Mickey explained to me that he found the decision a very hard one to make and that he couldn’t sleep during the week thinking about it. He told me that he would absolutely love to win one more All-Ireland before he retires and that he felt his best chance of doing that was with Derry.

“Mickey and Gavin have been a breath of fresh air since they arrived here in 2020 and what they’ve done for Louth football will never be forgoten. They brought us from division 4 to division two where we were very competitive last season and they got us to a Leinster Final which was our first one in 13 years.

“We were very excited with where they could take us and we were planning a full assault on getting up to division one next season. The players were given strength and conditioning programmes to work on during the off season and they were very determined to make more progress next year. I called a meeting in Darver on Monday evening to tell the board and teh players that Mickey and Gavin had stepped down and there was a lot of heads bowed from the players who were devastated to hear the news.

“Unfortunately we just have to move on with a heavy heart and do everything we can to make sure we get the right manager in to continue the great work that Mickey and Gavin have done over the last three years. We have to keep up the legacy of what they have achieved to date. I will leave no stone unturned to make sure we get the right man in and it is hugely important we don’t panic and explore all options. To be honest the timing of this is not great as we are very busy with the championship in full swing and players

due to return to training with Louth in November.

But they are the cards that have been dealt and we must work hard as a committee to make sure we get the right person in to keep pushing Louth football forward.

A statement from Louth GAA confirmed the news while thanking Mickey and Gavin for their professionalism, enthusiasm and dedication.

“Louth GAA Management Committee would like to sincerely thank Mickey, Gavin and his backroom team for their efforts in propelling Louth Senior Footballers into Div. 2 football from Div. 4 in 2020. They have shown professionalism, enthusiasm, dedication and continued courtesy over the last three years and we have enjoyed a positive working relationship with Mickey and his Management Team which concluded in the group stages of the All-Ireland following a first Leinster Final Appearance since 2010.

“Louth GAA would like to wish Mickey, Gavin and his Management Team all the best in their future endeavours.

“We will now immediately begin the process in seeking a New Senior Football Team Manager,” concluded the statement.

Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick gave a positive update on the proposed new stadium development in Dundalk with the Louth GAA chairman stating that everybody is now singing of the same hymn sheet with regards to the project.

“Things are progressing well. We’ve had five meetings in the last number of weeks with Croke Park and we are all singing of the same hymn sheet. The stadium is going ahead and we are all working as hard as we can to make sure that happens as quickly as possible,” he added.

National Learning Network raise €1320 for SAFE Castlebellingham The National Learning Network in Dundalk held a charity event on Monday afternoon at the Clan na Gael’s GAA hall in aid of SAFE (Suicide Awareness For Everyone) Castlebellingham. They held a bingo afternoon which was very well attended

and helped raise some much needed funds for SAFE, who work with mental health and suicide awareness.

Aibinn McGrane who is a programme instructor for the National Learning Network in Dundalk was delighted with how the event went and thanked

everybody who came.

“We had a great afternoon and we were delighted to be able to raise a total of €1,320 for SAFE Castlebellingham who do great work in raising awareness of suicide and mental health issues,” stated Aibinn.

A former worker at the Heinz factory in Dundalk has invited all former employees to a 30th anniversary reunion which will be held on Friday 29th of September in Oscars Bar, Park Street.

Mark Gogarty, the current proprieter of Oscar’s Bar, remembers his days working in Heinz with great fondness and says there was a great camaraderie amongst the workforce and a great social element during his time with the company between 1993 and 1995. Located at the entrance to Finnabair Industrial Estate the factory opened in 1993 just as the town was coming out of the recession which had crippled Ireland during the 80’s.

According to Mark there was huge excitement locally when the factory opened as it was a big name and the news of new jobs gave the town a huge lift.

“It was big news at the time when it opened as Dundalk was just coming out of

a recession and to see a big name like Heinz coming to town as an employer was probably a bit like when WuXi came to Dundalk recently.

“The majority of the workers in Heinz back in 1993 when it first opened were young, free and single and of course with that came a phenomenal social life which we fully embraced,” laughs Mark.

“We worked hard but at the end of the week we were all mad for the craic and we did our town proud by supporting every publican in Dundalk from Byrne’s on the Dublin Road right down to

Harry’s Bar in Bridge St.!

“It got to the stage where we had to ring ahead to whatever bar we were going to and warn them that there was up to 60 people from Heinz en route to their pub so they could be prepared for us. We had fantastic times and I often think about what a great place Heinz was to work. I would love if some of the people who worked in Heinz would come out on Friday 29th of September in Oscar’s Bar and we can reminisce about the good old days and the laughs we had back then.

“With regards to the

work, we were mainly making pizza bases at the start before adding ingredients and the final frozen product would be shipped all over the country and across the continent.

It was enjoyable work because you were moving around and learning new things every few months and you weren’t stuck doing the same thing day in day out.

“As I said they were great days and if anybody knows anybody who was working in Heinz in Dundalk let them know that we are having a reunion on Friday 29th September in Oscars Bar at 8pm,” added Mark.

Housing will be the defining issue of next general election states O Murchú

Housing, healthcare and the cost of living are the focus for Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú as the Dáil begins a new term this week.

The Oireachtas opens for business on Wednesday afternoon after the summer recess, with TDs focused on the June 2024 local and European elections and the next general election.

Deputy Ó Murchú, who attended his parliamentary party’s think-in in Dublin on Friday, said Sinn Féin elected representatives discussed election preparations, housing and the cost of living.

He said: ‘We are moving into an election phase and one of the most important there has ever been as we look forward to local and European elections in June, which will be voters’ first opportunity to opt for change.

‘I have spent the summer in the constituency, attending events, meeting people in the Dundalk office and seeing the public appetite for change, which is growing every day.

‘There has been a lot of conversation this summer about Irish unity and there is a growing desire for the proper preparations to be put in place for a referendum on this issue.

‘People feel the government is not up to the task of solving the problem in their lives. Mortgage costs are increasing, house prices for those who are seeking mortgages are increasing, prices are rising, rents are on the up and there continues to be

a chronic shortage of houses to rent or buy.

‘There continues to be huge difficulties in Louth for families with children with in accessing care, respite, occupational and speech and language therapies and mental health services.

‘And there are people who are struggling to care for loved ones, whether these are children or parents, whose cries for help are being ignored.

‘The latest Census figures show that Louth’s over 65 population grew by 24% in the six years from April 2016 to April 2022.

‘The public knows that if we want things to change, then a change of government is needed.

‘Housing will be the defining issue of the upcoming elections and the government parties will have to answer voters as to how their policies are impacting on the ability of employers to hire workers, schools to hire teachers and hospitals to hire healthcare staff.

‘The Census figures show that there has been a 20% rise in the number of adults living with their parents in Louth in the last six years.

‘If people give us the opportunity, a Sinn Féin led government that will fix the housing crisis by reducing rents and delivering the largest social and affordable house building programme in the history of the state. The outcome of the next general election is far from decided, we know that we have a lot of work to do.”

Caitríona skydives to fundraise for Turas

Earlier this month, Omeath native, Caitríona O’Reilly went above and beyond for Turas as she took to the skies to take part in a skydive. Brave Caitríona, who works on the Morgans Fine Fish stall in Navan, completed a 15,000-foot tandem jump with Skydive Ireland to raise much-needed funds for Turas. According to Caitríona she wanted to give something back to Turas and help them help others who are looking to recover from addictions to drugs and alcohol.

“I decided to skydive for Turas because they offer a free, confidential and non-judgmental service to those who are looking for recovery from drugs and alcohol. They have supported many people, including myself, in their journey to sobriety, and I wanted to give back for all their help.”

“Chloe and Leah, who

are counsellors with Turas asked at a meeting if anybody would like to join them with the “Skydive for Turas’ fundraiser and after initially saying no way I later thought to myself why not! Turas have been very good to me and everybody is so kind and friendly so I wanted to give back and raise some money so that they can continue to help any people who are in difficult situations.

“To be honest I wasn’t actually that scared ahead of the skydive. My instructor was very calm and I felt safe knowing he was very securely strapped to me. I suppose the worst bit was when the door of the plane opened and I did get a little bit scared but at that stage you just want to get it done with and the actual jump was a great thrill. You free fall for about five minutes and then when the para-

chute opens it takes about a minute to get to the ground.

I’m proud I did it and that’s another thing ticked off the bucket list now,”laughs Caitríona.

“I’d love to give a big thank you to the people of Navan town who sponsored most of my furdraising while I was working on Morgan’s Fine Fish stall in the town centre.

I’d also love to thank my family and friends who supoorted me all the way, who believed I could do it! Especially to my mother, Pauline O’Reilly, my sister Coleen O’Reilly, my niece Isabelle O’Reilly, and my partner John Mellon, who came up to see me on the day. Thanks to Turas for their support and kindness over the last year, as I wouldn’t have been able to have this experience without them!,” she added.

Carroll Village two way traffic to resume again from October

Traffic travelling from Church St/ Clanbrassil St has been stopped from turning onto Carroll Village at the Green Church for a number of months due to safety concerns around the apartment balconies at the Carroll Village complex. A contractor has been engaged to carry out remedial works and in discussions with the Council they have confirmed they hope that these will be completed by mid October. This will allow for the reopening of two way traffic at Carroll Village.

Cllr Kelly remarked ‘this is good news for the businesses of the Northend of town.

Anything that limited access or caused traffic disruption could be deemed to have a negative impact on business in the area. More importantly from a safety point of view it is great that these balconies have been secured and no accidents or injuries have occurred. It will be great to have the area opened up again and the removal of all temporary signage and bollards which in itself was an eyesore.’

The victory was sweet revenge for the group who had lost heavily in the U17 final to the same opposition last year. According to head coach Elijah Faapito the victory was richly deserved by his side who played six games in one day to lift the title.

“I am so proud of the guys as they have worked so hard on getting better. This same group played Galway Titans in a final last April at U17 level and they were well beaten so to come back a few months later against the same opposition and come away with the win is a clear indicator of the improvements they have made in a short space of time.

The Michael Heffernan tournament is run by the Cork Basketball board and they invite

the top 20 teams in the country through the various age groups.

“We took part in the U18 section and this was the first ever time a Dundalk Ravens U18 side had taken part in the tournament. We knew we were on the opposite side of the draw to Galway Titans and that if we both won all our matches we would meet again in the final and give us a chance to dish out revenge. We had a harder route to the final than them but the boys did brilliantly winning five games in succession to set up that match against the Titans in the final,” explained Elijah.

“We stayed with them throughout the whole game and then with time running out we went up by three.

With seconds to go they tied the match with a buzzer beater three pointer which was tough to take. We regrouped for overtime and once again we were up by three going into the final sec-

onds but unbelievably the Titans drew level once again with a second three pointer on the buzzer. My nerves were shred at that stage but the boys stayed focussed and eventually in double overtime we came through to win the title. It was a phenomenal performance

from everybody and a special word to Gustas Pocevicius who won the prize for MVP of the tournament.

“I’ve been with the boys since the start at U12 level before I became head coach when they were U14’s. They see me as a friend as well as a coach and I

think they respect me given the fact I am now playing for Ireland. They are a great group of lads and they will enjoy a short break now before gearing up again for the National Cup which starts in November,” added the proud coach.

Music Generation Louth performed a summer lunchtime concert for WuXi employees.

Music Generation Louth were delighted to accept a cheque from WuXi Biologics.

Young musicians from Music Generation Louth were delighted to visit WuXi Biologics during the summer to perform a summer lunchtime concert for employees. The performance featured Music Generation Louth’s senior string orchestra, harp ensemble as well as a number of soloists and pop bands. WuXi Biologics and WuXi Vaccines’ Joint CSR Committee had invited the young people to perform as a fundraising initiative to support Music Generation Louth’s work.

CSR Committee members Karen Kinsella and Jason Synnott visited the Music Generation Louth Centre at LMETB, Chapel St, Dundalk earlier this week to meet with staff and present a cheque for funds raised which totalled €2,300.

It was very exciting for our young musicians to get the chance to visit WuXi Biologics’s amazing facilities in Dundalk to perform. Our programme is all the time expanding and the funds raised will help us purchase new instruments and create new music programmes for children and young people who might not otherwise have the opportunity to engage with music.

Dundalk Deaf Group opening doors for deaf community

A LOCAL woman who volunteers for the Dundalk Deaf Group is inviting anyone who is deaf to get in touch.

Dundalk Deaf Group Secretary Trisha Nugent is encouraging people to get involved in Irish Sign Language Awareness Week running from the 18th of September “It’s a small group of about 15 to 20 members. Some of those are from Drogheda and Meath. One person is from Waterford,” said Trisha.

“I have hearing but I’ve always been interested in sign language. I was involved in a church in Dublin that pioneered sign language in the community.

“Irish Sign Language (ISL) has a really interesting history. I got involved with it because a number of deaf people were coming to the church and we started signing the service in church.”

“Some hearing people might be a little intimidated but would love to be able to communicate with a deaf person.”

She continued: “Deaf people love to see hearing people try to communicate in sign language. It’s beautiful to see deaf people have their own culture and for hearing people to appreciate it.

“Irish Sign Language has been a Dundalk Deaf Group on a recent Sky Line Tour trip to Croke Park in Dublin recognised language in Ireland since 14th December 2017. I’d recommend it to anyone interested in learning ISL as there are a lot of jobs as interpreters. It’s a fantastic job as it’s interesting and well paid. You don’t need to have sign language to get on to a course.”

Family Notices certificate he took up employment with a family friend John Myers and shortly after John’s untimely death, due to an accident, Gavan served his time as a plumber with Leo Marron from Carrickmacross. He went on to work for himself for a time and was highly regarded at being good at his job. Gavan was a keen sports fan and in particular he supported Manchester United making several trips to see them play.

His funeral mass was celebrated by family friend ALLEN Father Michael Dwyer who Gavan also did the eulogy. A packed Creative Spark Downtown Hub welcomed Rory O’Connor - Rory’s Stories to Dundalk for Independent Councillor Maeve Yore’s “Let’s Talk Mental Health” Event.

Rory shared his personal journey and the challenges he faced growing up and still faces managing his own mind and mental health. Rory is a firm believer in people taking charge of their own destiny and making things happen for themselves and has become a true advocate for mental health in Ireland . Successful Enrolment Night for Ardee Concert Band

Ardee Concert Band held a successful Enrolment Night last Friday and 12 young people joined up. They all started with their first lesson on Recorder led by their tutor, Gerry Farrell.

These young members will stay on Recorder until next May and then will move on to band instruments like flute, clarinet, sax, trumpet. They will then join our Junior Band for a year and then join our Intermezzo Ensemble for 3 years. Finally, they will join our multi-award winning Senior Band under renowned conductor Ronan O’Reilly.

The band currently have 50 young members receiving weekly tuition on flute, clarinet, trumpet, saxophone and recorder, each of these members sit in-house assessments or sit the grade exams of the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

There is a great opportunity to hear the Intermezzo Ensemble under their excellent conductor James MacCafferty when they will be playing in Ardee Library on this coming Friday night 22nd from 4.30pm to 5pm as part of the Culture Night activities organised by Ardee Library
