Gardaí in Dundalk have issued a plea for information regarding a 29-year old woman who has been missing from Dundalk since the end of May. Giedre Raguckaite, a Lithuanian national, was last seen on Hoey’s Lane in Dundalk on May 26 around 6pm. She is described as being 5ft 5” tall, of slight build with blonde hair and green eyes. Friends and family have also appealed for information after becoming increasingly worried for the safety of Giedre. Gardaí have also stated that they are looking to speak to Giedre’s boyfriend

but have been unable to locate him to date. It is understood that the missing woman contacted her father in Lithuania at the beginning of June to wish him a happy Father’s Day. However, there has been no contact with Giedre since then. Ms Raguckaite didn’t have her passport with her when she went missing as it had been left with her landlord as a deposit. A Garda spokesman asked anybody who has seen Giedre or who may have any information to contact the Gardaí in Dundalk Garda station on 043 9388400 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

New format introduced for Sunday’s SOSAD Duck Derby SOSAD will host the sixth running of the always popular duck derby on Sunday September 2 but this year there will be a slight change of format. Instead of releasing ten thousand ducks on to the Castletown River organisers have decided this year that they will race ten giant inflatable ducks each of which will have a

jockey on its back. Each duck will represent ten thousand ducklings and if your duck wins the race you will then enter the draw for the prizes on offer. According to Gerry Duffy from SOSAD organisers opted for a change this year due to the amount of small ducks escaping over the past number of years.

“It’s always a great family day out and we will have plenty of fun and games for the kids including bouncy castles, face painting and an ice cream van. “We are proud to have Dundalk FC manager Stephen Kenny down to start the race. Stephen is a patron of SOSAD and has always been very supportive of our fundraisers.

“Each duck will cost €2 with all proceeds going to SOSAD here in Dundalk. “We would like to thank everybody in Dundalk and the surrounding areas for all their continued support of the SOSAD Duck Derby and also the Dundalk Sub Aqua Unit whose support is vital in ensuring this race goes ahead,” added Gerry.

A late goal from captain Kate Flood secured a place in the All Ireland Final for the Louth Ladies football team as they saw off Derry in a thriller in Aughnacloy on Sunday afternoon. Louth went into the game as slight favourites having already beaten Derry this season in the league but fell behind early on as Derry powered into a fourpoint lead after ten minutes. Goals from Bonnie Fleming and Kate Flood helped Louth reach the break all square with the scoreboard reading 2-3 to 0-9. Louth began the second half strongly scoring three points in succession without reply but they were left reeling as Derry scored two goals in as many minutes as the Oak Leaf county went three points clear as the game entered its final stages. With three minutes remaining the match was stopped due to an injury to Louth defender Michelle McMahon. McMahon suffered a head injury but with no ambulance present the match had to be halted

A six week confidencebuilding course entitled ‘Living with sight loss’ is being held in the Crowne Plaza, Dundalk, commencing on Tuesday September 25. The aim of the course is to provide the practical and emotional support you need to face the future with confidence. Best friends getting inked to highlight work of ALONE Two Dundalk friends are proving that age is no barrier to achieving anything by taking part in a national project to highlight the fight against the stigma of ageing and raise awareness and funds for ALONE. Dolores Waller, aged 65, and Lily Barnacle, aged 74, who are both involved in the ALONE Ladies Choir in Dundalk, will travel to Dublin next month to get tattoos as part of the Bucket Listers project. The friends agreed to take part to highlight the work of ALONE, the charity that supports older people to age at home, as the organisation has helped them stay active. Dolores and Lily will travel to Dublin to join three other ALONE service users on Sunday, September 9 to get inked at The Ink Factory, and if anyone would like to sponsor them they can do so at https://give.everydayhero.com/ie/the-bucket-listproject. Originally from Newry, Dolores struggled with loneliness. She found ALONE through Lily, who encouraged the talented singer to join the Ladies Choir last October. I felt like she was more or less like my own daughter.” After her second husband passed away, Lily Barnacle was left struggling financially and her living conditions deteriorated. ALONE has assisted Lily with applications for a Housing Application Grant and the Housing Aid for Older People Grant, from Louth County Council and the SEAI. Speaking about her experi-

ence with ALONE, Lily said, “I got involved with the choir because people kept asking me to go to the choir. I ended up going and I’m still going about four or five years later. Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick welcomes Minister Kevin Boxer Moran to Dundalk today to discuss at length the €1 Billion Programme of Investment in Flood Relief Measures for Louth. Today the Minister for OPW and Flood Relief will visit Louth County Council and meet with Council Executive and local elected representatives. The Local TD said ‘I have been working closely with Minister Kevin “Boxer” Moran and Minister Paschal O’Donohoe over the past number of months on Flood Relief. Having spoken with concerned constituents

and seeing first-hand the destruction flooding has caused families in my local area.’ Deputy Fitzpatrick said ‘We all know that flooding can have an appalling impact on our families. It was a tough test for the seasoned young athletes, who had to compete with the best of the rest of the entire country during the two-day festival. However, they rose to the challenge in style. Their dedication and training paid off, as they brought home the Gold medal for the Wee County. Enya Silkena who ran the third leg of the relay also claimed an individual silver medal for the Louth team in the U12 Ball Throw competition. Also in the Ball Throw Andrew Rosbotham, who claimed a fourth place medal for his efforts in the national competition. A date and venue has been confirmed for the 50th anniversary reunion which is being held for students of the CBS who started First Year at the school in September 1968. Childcare in Louth DkIT musicians perform for President and Taoiseach is proving costly Louth is amongst the most expensive counties in Ireland when it comes to the cost of childcare according to a new survey from Newstalk Radio. The survey spoke with creches and childcare providers from all over the country and asked for the cost of putting a two-year-old in full-time care, five days a week. They then collated all the data and produced a table showing the average cost of childcare in each county. This data was then compared to a similar survey from five years earlier to see how much the cost of childcare has increased/decreased in each county. Unsurprisingly Dublin came out as the county with the highest costs with an average bill of €1047 per month. This was a rise of €84 when compared

to the average cost in 2013. Louth ranked very highly in the table coming out as the sixth most expensive county in the country when it comes to the cost of childcare per month. The data showed that parents in Louth pay an average of €771 per month which is an increase of €65 per month from five years earlier. The figure for Louth is above the national average which stands at €745. The cheapest place in Ireland for childcare is in Longford where the average monthly cost is €650. A report by Pobal released at the end of 2016 stated that there were 4262 children enrolled in childcare facilities in Louth. In total there was 111 childcare/creche providers in the county with 603 people working in the childcare sector.

Staff, students and graduates from Dundalk Institute of Technology performed to a crowd of thousands in Bolton Square, Drogheda to welcome the President for the official opening of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2018. Flute player Martha Guiney from Newry, Co. Down and Dublin accordion player Joanne Cusack are graduates of the BA (Hons) Applied Music and have progressed to postgraduate studies in the University of Limerick and Maynooth University respectively. As students at DkIT, they represented the Institute internationally including tours of North America and Brazil, the latter as the Irish performing group at the 2014 International Society for Music Educa-

Dundalk Golf Club’s run in this year’s AIG Senior Cup came to an end on Saturday when they lost 3.5 to 1.5 in the Leinster semi-finals to pretournament favourites Dun Laoghaire. After beating The Island in the quarterfinal earlier in the day, Dundalk went into their last four tie confident they could upset the odds and overcome a team that enjoyed a comfortable quarter-final win over Tullamore. Josh Mackin was sent out first and although the 17-yearold made a fine start, he eventually lost out 5&3. Eoin Murphy found himself trailing by

Conor Curran was one down from the second to the ninth but won 10 to get back to all square and moved in front when took the 15th but Rafferty loss meant Curran was called in and his match declared a half. It was a disappointing defeat for Dundalk but can still finish the season with a green pennant as they have already qualified for All Ireland Finals in Thurles in the Barton Shield.

Promoting the Irish language

Dr Adèle Commins, Head of Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music at Dundalk Institute of Technology, was presented with a special token of appreciation from Ard Stiúrthóir Labhrás Ó Murchú at the launch of Seachtain na Gaeilge ag Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Drogheda. Adèle and DkIT student Ciara Brannigan led a team of volunteers who have been working throughout the summer to prepare a range of events that were attractive to all age groups and people with all levels of Irish. Sponsored by Foras na Gaeilge, these events included Irish language classes, family fun, storytelling and dancing. Presiding over the launch in the Highlanes Gallery, Adèle noted the strong Irish language heritage in the region including the poets Peadar Ó Doirnín and Séamus Dall MacCurta and the important role of schol-

Adèle presented a paper on Rory at the Ó Ghlúin go Glúin symposium in association with the Creative Arts Research Centre at the Fleadh on Friday and also performed for both the President, Michael D. Higgins, and the

Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, when they visited the Fleadh. Seachtain na Gaeilge was an integral part of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Drogheda and all of the Irish language activities were very well attended. It is hoped that people will continue to incorporate the language into their everyday lives and planning will begin soon for next year’s Fleadh in Drogheda.

AA Roadwatch guide to the school run

The kids are about to head back to school, so it’s time to see if the uniforms still fit, buy shoes with plenty of extra growing room and spend a fortune on shiny new stationery. It’s also time to prepare the car – and yourself – for the daily journeys ahead if you’re on school run duty. Read on for our checklist so you can make it as safe and stress-free as possible. Belt up Ensure that car seats, booster seats and seatbelts fit well for every passenger, especially considering any growth spurts that may have occurred over the summer. Aa patrols have seen many ill-fitting car seats when rescuing members by the roadside, and these carry a risk of serious or fatal injury in the event of a collision. Make sure to set a good example, too, by always wearing your own seatbelt. Plan your journey Roads around school gates can become very congested with cars, bus-

es, cyclists and pedestrians so plan ahead so you know exactly how to get there and leave more time than you think you’ll need for the trip. Many schools have designated dropoff points for children – find out if your children’s school does. If you have to choose your own drop-off point, make sure that it’s on the same side of the road as the school gate so children don’t have to cross. Make sure not to obstruct school bus drop-off points, and be extra vigilant when buses are dropping off children. Check your levels It’s good advice at any time, but make sure that your oil, tyre pressure, coolant and screen washer are all topped up, especially if your car hasn’t had much use over the summer – the last thing you want on the school run is to break down!
