The community of Faughart were in celebratory mood this week following the announcement that the local primary school is set to re-open this September. The national school has been closed since last September after parents withdrew their children from the school following complaints about how it was being run. The number of pupils at the school had been dwindling over the last number of years with parents claiming that the Department of Education and the Catholic Archbishop of Armagh Eamon Martin had failed to respond to calls for a change of leadership in the school.

Only a handful of pupils turned up for the new school year last September and shortly afterwards the decision was made to close the school and move the pupils elsewhere. Earlier this month the Department of Education and Skills held a meeting with the Archbishop of Armagh Diarmuid Martin where it was agreed that the LMETB would assume patronage of the school which would now become a multi-denominational, coeducational primary school. A statement released by the Department confirmed that the LMETB would take over the running of the school. Continued on Page 2

Exploring ways to address the wishes of all concerned. “Arising from these positive discussions, the Archdiocese, in association with the parish has agreed to make the vacant school property available to the Department for educational

purposes subject to an appropriate agreement.” A statement from the LMETB outlined what the ethos of the new school would be and what the vision for the new educational facility would be. “The new Faughart CNS will be a multi - denominational, co –educational primary school under the patronage of LMETB, a leader in educational provision and the patron of the largest range of schools and educational programmes in Counties Louth and Meath.

As a multi - denominational school, Faughart CNS will accept students of all faiths and of none. “The medium of instruction at the school will be English. Our vision for Faughart CNS is of a welcoming, diverse and dynamic school that provides a quality learning experience with the learner as core. This vision is linked to the LMETB high-level strategic goal included in LMETB’s Strategy Statement 2017 – 2021 ‘Excellence in Education

and Training to Achieve, Progress and Innovate’. Students at Faughart CNS will feel a sense of belonging and will develop a love of learning through a positive and happy school experience. Students will be motivated and provided with opportunities to become active and responsible participants in their own learning. The school community will work with all partners and stakeholders to prepare knowledgeable and socially responsible citizens for the future,” concluded the

statement. There was widespread delight locally from local representatives who have been working closely with the department to resolve this matter. “I have been working closely with the Department and my colleague Richard Bruton closely on this and I am delighted that an agreement has been made as this will greatly benefit the Faughart Community,” stated Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick. Seatown FC reach Gothia Cup u-16 final The Seatown FC side managed by Brian McGuinness did themselves and the town proud as they reached the final of the U16B Gothia Cup in Sweden last weekend. Playing in heat of over 30 degrees the Dundalk side played nine games in total winning six and drawing one of their nine matches. The Gothia Cup is the biggest international youth tournament in the world and hosts 1731 teams from 80 countries during the week-long event. Seatown took a while to get acclimatised to the heat losing their first match 4-1 against eventual group winners Utbynas. However they followed that with a draw against Vake and victory against Swedish

He would become a threetime Northern Ireland champion with many tipping him to go on to pro glory but it wasn’t to be for the Irishman as he probably wisely decided to focus on his acting career instead.

Oscar winner Liam Neeson brought his ‘very particular set of skills’ along to O’Hanlon Park Boxing Club over the weekend much to the delight of the members who were present. Disqualified from driving for two years A man who failed to appear in court to answer a dangerous driving charge was disqualified for two years at Dundalk District Court. Ross Torley (21) of 1 Colecourt, Newry, was observed by Gardai driving at speed in an area described as a place frequented by boy racers. Evidence was given that Mr Torley was seen at 11.10pm at Tesco Car Park on October 27 last year. He revved loudly before taking off at speed through the car

park, while there were pedestrians present. He then braked suddenly and turned onto a parallel road, while the tyres were squealing. Solicitor, Niall Breen, suggested that the squealing could occur due to a dry surface and stated that as it was closing time there were not many people about. The Garda stated that it was an area that was frequented by boy racers. Judge John Coughlan imposed a twoyear ban and a €200 fine.

A Dundalk man was banned from driving for two years after pleading guilty to drink driving at Dundalk District Court. Christopher Smyth (26) of 1 Holly Park, Bay Estate, was stopped by Gardai at Castletown Road on October 30 last year. Judge John Coughlan also imposed a €75 fine.

Two men were given a chance to avoid a conviction after they both agreed to make a €300 contribution to charity. Christopher McDonagh (21) of 93 Rockfield Manor, Hoeys Lane, Dundalk, and William McDonagh (19) of 6 Road 2, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, appeared at Dundalk District Court following an incident at Clontygora Court on January 20. The court heard that when Gardai approach the men a knife was dropped before both became abusive. Judge Coughlan heard that neither defendant had a previous conviction and he adjourned the case to September 5 for the payment of compensation.

A man who claimed he was unable to understand the demands made of him due to his limited grasp of the English language, failed in a bid to have a drink driving charge dismissed at Dundalk District Court. Jakub Hruby (31) of 175 Waterville Crescent, Tom Bellew Av-

enue, was observed by Gardai driving on to Tom Bellew Avenue on November 26 last year. He drove around the roundabout the wrong way and then drove on the wrong side of the road. Officers stopped the defendant and noted a strong smell of alcohol and he was unsteady on his feet.

He was taken to Dundalk Garda Station where a sample showed he was over the limit for driving. Solicitor Paula Tiernan stated that her client was unable to understand what was required from him and that he wasn’t offered an interpreter. She stated that in her consultations with Mr Hruby she

always needed an interpreter. The prosecuting Garda stated that the defendant had no difficulty in understanding him when he asked for a licence and insurance details, and that he was able to have a conversation with him. In convicting Judge John Coughlan imposed a four-year ban and

€100 fine and in respect of driving without insurance he imposed a €75 fine. Judge Coughlan dismissed a charge of refusing to provide a specimen as he accepted that the defendant hadn’t understood the requirements.

Failed to avoid drink driving conviction

A man who failed in a bid to have a drink driving charge dismissed on a technicality was banned from the road for two years at Dundalk District Court. Richard Yore (37) of 26 The Hamlet, Dromiskin, was also fined €75 arising from an incident at Hoey’s Lane, Dundalk, on April 14 this year. Evidence was given that Mr Yore was stopped at a checkpoint at 9.40pm and after failing a roadside breath test he was taken to Dundalk Garda Station and a sample taken illustrated that he was over the limit. The defence solicitor argued that the authorisation from the Inspector to hold the checkpoint should have included a more specific location than Hoey’s Lane, considering it was a long road. However, Judge Coughlan disagreed and ruled that it was sufficiently specific. The solicitor then argued that the authorisation did not say the specific purpose for the checkpoint and as a result the case should be dismissed. Insp Martin Beggy pointed out that the authorisation stated that the checkpoint was for ‘mandatory intoxicant testing’, and Judge John Coughlan ruled that this was also sufficient and he convicted. The solicitor stated that the married father of two is a trainee field technician who needs to drive for work. Judge Coughlan postponed the disqualification to January 11 next.

Dundalk claims first senior title DUNDALK Golf Club made an historic breakthrough at the weekend by winning the Leinster Final of the AIG Barton Shield and claiming the club’s first ever senior title. They did it in style with impressive victories over Corrstown, Elm Park and Enniscorthy in the provincial finals which were held at Mount Wolseley Golf Club in Tullow, Co Carlow, on Friday and Saturday. The Barton Shield is one of the two senior trophies on offer for Irish golf clubs each year and features the top amateur players in the country. It is played off scratch in a foursomes matchplay format with two pairings representing each club and the aggregate score from each match deciding the match. For joint managers Alan McCabe and John Conlon it was the culmination of three years’ work having taken over responsibility for the club’s senior panel in 2016. “We reached the Leinster quarter-finals the first year and then got to the semi-finals last year and lost to the eventual winners,” said Conlon. “We set ourselves a target of going one better this year and once we got to the final we were determined to take the opportunity because we knew we had no divine right to think we will ever get a second chance.” Dundalk headed to Tullow with an eight man panel made up of the experienced Aaron Grant, Irish international Caolan Rafferty, Boys

Enniscorthy shocked pre-tournament favourites Dun Laoghaire, winning the other semifinal by three holes, and they teed it up alongside Dundalk on Saturday morning. Dundalk kept faith with the quartet that got them to the final and in the top match Grant and Mackin opened up an early lead when their opponents three-putted the opening hole. They held that lead to the fifth, when a lost ball off the tee opened the door for Enniscorthy to draw level. Two great bunker shots by Mackin on the next two holes prevented Enniscorthy from taking the lead and the youngster then played a superb approach into the eight to set up a 15ft birdie putt from Grant to win the hole. They went two up after winning the 10th despite finding the trees down the left from the tee from where Mackin could only pitch the ball back onto the fairway. Enniscorthy, sensing an opportunity, decided to lay up in front of the stream protecting the narrow green but Grant called their bluff by producing the shot of the week, a magnificent two iron into the wind from 238 yards which he left six feet from a back pin. After Enniscorthy made five, Mackin showed nerves of steel to sink the birdie putt to win the hole in four. On the next hole

Mackin rolled in a par putt to move Dundalk three up and although they lost the 14th to a remarkable birdie they halved the next two holes and were two up playing the 16th when they were called in. Behind them Rafferty and Murphy quickly got holes on the board by winning the opening two holes and went three up with a win on the fourth. A superb teeshot from Murphy set up a six foot birdie putt and a win from Rafferty on the sixth and although they lost the ninth, they turned three up. Their lead was reduced to two after they lost the par three 11th to a birdie but they responded to that set back in magnificent style by eagling the par five 12th. A birdie at the 14th moved them back to four up and when Enniscorthy failed to match their birdie at the 15th, they moved to five up. That left Dundalk’s aggregate score at seven holes ahead with six to play and triggered joyous scenes as the large crowd of club and family members who had travelled south to support the team over the two days celebrated with the players, caddies and managers. “The support was fantastic,” said McCabe. “It was definitely a big help to us and we greatly appreciate the efforts people made to get to Mount Wolseley. Hopefully, they will be able to travel in big numbers to Thurles in October for the All-Ireland Finals.” Before that, Dundalk have a chance to com-

plete a Leinster double as they have also qualified for the provincial finals in the AIG Senior Cup, the first time in the club’s history that they have qualified for both elite Leinster finals in the same year. Local author pens debut novel

Dundalk man Thomas Martin has just released his debut novel entitled ‘The Life and Times of Mr Joseph Soap’. The book was a real labour of love for Thomas who is a member of the Irish Defence Forces. Given the nature of his job, time was his biggest enemy in getting the book published but having started the fictional novel while serving in Lebanon in 2014 Thomas was delighted to have gotten the book across the line in recent months. The novel is a humorous and heartwarming story about a grandfather seeking to cement his place in his family’s history. In the hope of forging a lasting bond with his new grandchild, Joseph Soap begins to document his life and lessons learned along the way in an autobiography, which he hopes will one

Wee County Big Book Club 2018

Author Michael Harding visited County Library, Dundalk on July 20th to launch a new collaborative initiative called Wee County Big Book Club Festival. Wee County Big Book Club is a collaborative initiative of Louth Library Service, Creative Spark, An Táin Arts Centre, Dundalk and Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda. The ‘wee book’ chosen for 2018 is Michael Harding’s On Tuesdays I’m a Buddhist published by Hachette Ireland. The idea stemmed from a conversation between Sarah Daly, Director of Creative Spark, Elaine Cronin, An Táin, and Daire O’Connell, Arts Coordinator at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda, all of whom are interested in deepening participation in the arts and creativity, and promoting creative activity as a benefit to everyone’s wellbeing. The Wee County Big Book Club initiative invites book club members and the general public to read and discuss On Tuesdays I’m a Buddhist published by Hachette Ireland. In this memoir, Harding ruminates on the difference between psychotherapy and religion, and relates the story of his pilgrimage to Skellig Michael in his ongoing search for meaning. The book is available for loan from any Louth library and in local book shops. A Louth Lilt in Scotland Ardee musicians and DkIT researchers Dr Adèle Commins and Dr Daithí Kearney are packing their accordion and banjo to bring a taste of Louth’s musical culture to Scotland for Speyfest. They have been awarded funding from Culture Ireland to perform and facilitate workshops at Speyfest in Fochabers, Scotland this year. Included as part of the Culture Ireland GB18 programme, the funding supports the dissemination of their research as performers and composers. Performing primarily new compositions that draw influence from Irish and other traditional music’ and traditional repertoire from Louth and the surrounding Oriel region, Commins and Kearney perform regularly as a duet but also with a full ensemble incorporating other local musicians. For the Scottish workshops and performances, they will be accompanied by undergraduate researchers from the DkIT Ceol Oirghialla Traditional Music Ensemble. This will be the second visit by the group to Speyfest and their 2016 tour, which also included presentations at the International Society for Music Education Conference in Glasgow, was documented in The Road to Speyfest, directed by DkIT undergraduate students Hannah Conroy and John McCallig from the BA (Hons) Film and Television Production. Driver speeding in estate as children played A man who drove at speed in a housing estate where children were playing escaped a disqualification at Dundalk District Court. Bernard Joyce (20) of 48 Clontygora Court, Dundalk, had a charge of dangerous driving reduced to careless driving. He also pleaded guilty to driving

without insurance and was fined €50 in each case. Evidence was given that on August 18 last year Gardai on patrol observed Mr Joyce driving in the Aghameen Park/Clontygora Court area. When they activated the blue lights the defendant took off at speed well above the

30kph limit. The Garda stated that there were several speed ramps and children playing on the park. There were others on that road that had to get out of the way of the defendant. Solicitor Eleanor Kelly stated that her client was not insured as he had just bought the

Bids work with retailers around the town to try and enhance the town centre by increasing footfall and trying to collectively improve its trading performance. The BIDS scheme is financed by the ratepayers who contribute

Dundalk became the first town in the country to successfully implement a BIDS scheme in 2008 just after the economic crash hit Ireland. BIDS looking for another five years Dundalk ratepayers are being asked to support Dundalk’s Business Investment Scheme (BIDS) through to 2023 by voting yes in the upcoming ballot. Ballot papers have been sent out to the business ratepayers around the town asking if they approve the BIDS proposal to continue the scheme for another five years up to December 31, 2023. BIDS was set up with the aim of creating a welcoming and

Scheme to help improve the visual landscape of the town centre. In 2013 a total of 584 Dundalk ratepayers voted with the majority voting to extend the scheme for another five years. Those in charge of BIDS will be hoping for a similar outcome next month. Martin McElligott is the current chairman of BIDS. The closing date for ballot papers to be returned is 12pm on Tuesday 31st July 2018.

Drumcar history walk Annagassan and District Historical Society’s next event is a 2 km history walk around Drumcar and Willistown led by Bryan Rogers on Sunday July 29 at 2:30pm. The walk will begin with a visit to St. Fintan’s Church where the group will view the McClintock Mausoleum and the McClintock memorial window by the stained-glass artist Harry Clarke. Bryan will also discuss the history of the Lych gate and local involvement in the Boer war and WW1.

From the church they will walk towards Willistown House where Bryan will outline the long history of the house and its occupants. He will also talk about the Willistown poet ‘Pip’ Lynch. Please park at the car park beside St. Mary’s Drumcar’s swimming pool. A bus will be organised to take people from Willistown House back to the car park. Refreshments will be provided at the end of the walk, which costs €5 (children are free) and all are welcome.

One Our Father and three Hail Marys, and a Glory Be Amen; and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotion to St. Martha. BREEN Bernadette The family of the late Bernadette Breen (nee Coburn), wish to thank most sincerely all those who sympathised with them on their recent sad bereavement. Thanks to all who sent Mass cards, letters of sympathy, floral tributes. To those who called to the house, telephoned, texted/WhatsApp or attended the funeral Mass and burial, we thank you all. A special word of thanks to Fr. Mark O’Hagan and Bernadette’s former neighbour and friend Deacon Paul Casey, and to the sacristan of St Patrick’s Cathedral. Also to the organist and soloist at the Requiem Mass. Thanks to Bernie’s former colleagues from P J Carrolls, Dundalk FM and her neighbours. Your concerns and good wishes for Bernie will never be forgotten. Also a huge thank-you to everyone who brought sandwiches, cakes, baked breads etc; it was much appreciated. Thanks to all the nurses/home-care assistants who were so professional and always displayed kindness and understanding towards Bernie. Also to all the staff at the Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda and Dr Nora McCarthy and staff at The Laurels Clinic, Dundalk. Also a big thank-you to all the voluntary associations connected with Lourdes Pilgrimages and to the staff at The Birches for calling to the house, messages of sympathy etc. Thanks also to McGeough’s Undertakers for the dignified and professional manner in which you carried out all funeral arrangements; also to the grave-diggers at St Patrick’s Cemetery. As it is impossible to thank everyone individually, we trust this acknowledgment will be accepted by all as an expression of our sincere thanks, appreciation and eternal gratitude. Volunteers Wanted Newry/Dundalk Samaritans are seeking volunteers to help provide their services in the area by giving three or four hours per week. This includes help by phone, email, text or face-to-face, and can also involve visiting schools, colleges and workplaces. An information night will be held soon to provide those interested with the opportunity to learn more about the Samaritans.
