The community of Faughart were in celebratory mood this week following the announcement that the local primary school is set to re-open this September. The national school has been closed since last September after parents withdrew their children from the school following complaints about how it was being run. The number of pupils at the school had been dwindling over the last number of years with parents claiming that the Department of Education and the Catholic Archbishop of Armagh Eamon Martin had failed to respond to calls for a change of leadership in the school.
Only a handful of pupils turned up for the new school year last September and shortly afterwards the decision was made to close the school and move the pupils elsewhere. Earlier this month the Department of Education and Skills held a meeting with the Archbishop of Armagh Diarmuid Martin where it was agreed that the LMETB would assume patronage of the school which would now become a multi-denominational, coeducational primary school. A statement released by the Department confirmed that the LMETB would take over the running of the school. Continued on Page 2
