Local representatives hit out at treatment of staff following closure of ‘Authentic Food Company’ Confirmation of the closure of the Authentic Food Company in Dundalk has been greeted with condemnation from local representatives who say staff have been treated badly by the company’s owners. After weeks of speculation it was finally announced on Friday that the company had closed due to financial difficulties. The com-

pany which is located in Finnabair Industrial Estate off the Inner Relief Road was set up in 2014 and produced frozen ready meals. It had a workforce of up to 180 people. The facility was formerly owned by Heinz but was taken over by the UK based ‘Authentic Food Company’ in 2015. Man refused to come down from roof A 39-year-old male was arrested in the early hours of last Wednesday morning when he was found by Gardai on the roof of a house on the Castletown Road. The Gardaí had responded to an intruder alarm and when they arrived at the scene they found that two windows had been smashed. A man was spotted on the roof of the house and when he refused to come down Gardaí called for the assistance of the local fire brigade to help remove him from the roof. The man was arrested and charged with burglary, trespassing and criminal damage and

ordered to appear before Dundalk District Court. A20-year-old male was assaulted on Clanbrassil St on Friday afternoon between 3.30pm and 4pm. The man was attempting to take cash out from an ATM when he was approached by a male wearing a black and green jacket. He was then ordered to hand over money and when he refused he was hit over the head with a glass bottle. The injured party made his escape by running into a nearby shop while the man who assaulted him was arrested by Gardaí who brought him to Dundalk Garda Station where he

was arrested and charged with assault causing harm (section 3). Meanwhile Gardai have warned businesses to be vigilant following reports of a number of counterfeit €50 around the town. The fake notes were handed in to two shops in Clanbrassil St and one in the Longwalk Shopping Centre by an unknown male on October 16. Gardaí have urged shopkeepers and business owners to check all notes carefully before accepting them. There were two thefts in North Louth during the week. The first took place in the car park of Ravensdale Park

between 1:30pm and 3pm on October 16. A car was left unlocked and subsequently a phone and a sum of cash was taken from the vehicle. The following day another theft took place between 2pm and 2:30pm when once again a car was left unlocked. This time the car was in the car park at Rathcor National School were the injured party was collecting their child. She returned to the car to find her handbag was missing. Members of a local family travelled to France to commemorate the 100th anniversary of a relative who died during World War I. Hugh Coburn from Dungooley, Kilcurry, was fighting with the American Forces when he was killed in action on October 14, 1918 and following a lengthy search his relatives located Hugh’s grave near Romagne in Northern France in 2002. It was decided to organise a trip to the grave to commemorate Hugh’s passing with 30 members of the extended family taking part in the event. One of the organisers of the trip, Breda Humphries, explained the reasons behind making the journey.

Halloween fun at The Marshes

A Martian has crash landed at Marshes Shopping Centre and needs help from local schoolchildren to return to his home planet. Fortunately, Dundalk children have been working hard to build a new spaceship for the return journey as part of the Halloween Fun at Marshes. Spaceships, built by pupils from St Nicholas Monastery National School, St Joseph’s National School and Castletown Girls School will be on display at the Centre until Wednesday, October 31. All are built from recyclable material and the best will receive a €350 prize for their

schools’ art department. Voting for the best spaceship is currently taking place on Marshes Facebook page. You can view the Marshes Martian’s crash zone at the Centre this week, as well as the new spaceships built to get it home. There’s also a display board where children are recording sightings of the Marshes Martian. It is all part of the Halloween fun at Marshes, where there will be free children’s activities from Saturday, October 27 to Wednesday, October 31, between 12.00 noon and 4.00pm each day.

The activities will include making slime, alien headbands, paper plane wreaths, trick or treat bags, pom-poms and more spaceships. Marshes Shopping Centre is located at Marshes Avenue close to the town centre. “Our young Heads of Fun will be creating video content for the events,” said Aoife Kerley of Marshes Shopping Centre. “We are all excited to find out who builds the spaceship to get the Marshes Martian back home. At Marshes, we are always very pleased to welcome children and parents to our themed events.

“This is our second major event of the season at Marshes Shopping Centre and we are also looking forward to hosting more family events.” Halloween events will incorporate the Marshes Little Monsters kids club. The free kids club runs on the last Saturday of each month at the food court. Meanwhile, Special Olympics Leinster’s Cops n Donuts fundraising event took place last Saturday (Oct 20). Special Olympics Leinster are hoping that this year’s Dundalk Cops n Donuts will bring their fundraising total to an amazing €12,500 for the year.

Caitlin inspired following meeting with Jason

Last Friday Caitlin Flynn and a group of her St Louis TY classmates were thrilled to be invited to the inaugural National Vision Inclusion Games in Trinity College. Available only to Dublin schools Caitlin and her teacher Ms O’Byrne applied anyway and she and her classmates spent an amazing day in the company of Ireland’s Paralympic legend Jason Smyth - a 17 times gold medallist. Caitlin tells a little of her own story: “In 2014 I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. I was only 11 at the time. There was only a 30% chance of me living through the operation. After the operation I was fully blind but my sight started coming back and I ended up with 10% percent vision. However we soon learned that that was all the

vision I would recover. That has had a huge impact on my life. I wouldn’t be where I am now without the help of my mam and dad and my sisters, and it’s great to know that I have the support of my family through thick and thin. This year in TY it is all about self-motivation and challenging yourself to step out of your comfort zone. I did that by going back to PE classes which I hadn’t attended since after the tumour. I was so inspired on Friday to stand beside Jason Smyth, someone who understood what I am going through, but also someone who reached his full potential and beyond. He is an inspiration for all people in Ireland living with disabilities as well as all able bodied people. He has promised to

stay in touch and I am excited by that.” Kate O’Byrne, Caitlin’s PE teacher was delighted to have been able to experience the day with Caitlin. “For all of us who went to Dublin with Caitlin it was a sobering experience. We closed our eyes and had a feeling of how it is for visually impaired athletes. But we could open our eyes after. Caitlin could not. Jason was inspirational. He only started his own athletic career at Caitlin’s age so he is a wonderful role model for her. Caitlin recently completed her 25km Gaisce hike and is currently in training for her first 5k run along with all her classmates. I look forward to the day when I can celebrate some of Caitlin’s Paralympic medals,” stated Kate.

A woman who admitted driving without insurance escaped a driving ban when she appeared at Dundalk District Court. Nicola Martin (30) of 27 Lios Dubh, Armagh Road, Dundalk, was stopped at Hoeys Lane on January 25 this year. Judge John Coughlan imposed a €40 fine and stated that he wouldn’t disqualify on this occasion.

Pleaded Guilty

A man who pleaded guilty to driving without insurance was disqualified for two years at Dundalk District Court. James O’Connor (32) of 66 Aghameen Park, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai at Coes Road, Dundalk, on January 12 this year. The defendant, who is a carer for his four children, had a previous conviction for no insurance. Judge John Coughlan also imposed a €25 fine.

On Sunday October 14 De La Salle school welcomed boys from fourth, fifth and sixth class and their parents to De La Salle. Principal Patricia O’Leary welcomed the groups with a talk in the school gym. During the presentation, a music piece written by the school’s music group “Faoi Gheasa” was played to the parents. Groups were then led on an organised school tour around their three buildings (the new building opened in 2015) by a teacher and accompanied by a Lasallian Leader, a Senior Student in the school. The groups were given a pumpkin carving demonstration in the art room and a sample of a smoothie and homemade buns in the Home Economics room and a Science demonstration. The English teachers spoke about the “Accelerated Reader” in the School Library and music students performed a song in the Music Room. The modern language teachers spoke about the three languages, French, German and Spanish on offer and students spoke about their mini-companies in the Business room. In the Irish room, students and parents participated in an interactive game using I-Pads and Apple TV. The technology and technical graphics teachers were on hand to give advice as were the maths teachers in the computer room. Tour groups ended with a coffee in The Study Hall where they had an opportunity to speak to Transition Year students, Lasallian Leaders, Green Schools Committee, Sports Mentors and learn about the school’s Erasmus programme. The sports department displayed their Gaelic, Soccer, Rugby, Golf and Chess trophies. Students took part in a maths challenge and learned how to make volcanic cones with the geography teachers, while the parents relaxed with a coffee. On display were photographs of our School Awards night and school tours to Germany, France, Italy and England Soccer Tours.

Dún Dealgan’s 125 years

Dún Dealgan National School is celebrating. One hundred and twenty-five years ago, in 1893, excited children entered a brand-new school in Jocelyn Street and in August 2018 history repeated itself. On Friday October 26 pupils, staff, parents and friends will gather to mark the school’s 125th anniversary and to celebrate the completion of its School Building Project. Along with a full refurbish-

ment of the old school building there are now four new classrooms, a staffroom, a large office space and full accessibility which is located behind Dundalk Presbyterian Church. The day will be led by Principal Helen Lord with teachers Miriam Donnelly, Laura McDonnell, Valerie Rogers and Debbie Larkin, and past-pupil Ken Ramsey will present a history of the school in Dundalk. The pupils will of course be a big part of

the day and the Dundalk Men’s Shed Choir are coming along to perform a special request for everyone. A commemorative plaque will be unveiled to mark the occasion by Mary Malone Moran, a longtime friend and supporter of the school. The school will open on Saturday October 27 from 11am until 1pm to allow past, present and future pupils and parents, neighbours and friends to visit.

Local groups up for national award

Louth-based Cox’s Demense Youth & Community Project and Cairde na Cruite have been put through their paces as part of judging for the finals of the inaugural National Lottery Good Causes Awards which take

place in Dublin on Saturday November 3.  The groups beat off stiff competition to be announced as finalists in the Youth and Health Categories for the East Region in the Awards aimed at honouring the inspiring work

and achievements of thousands of projects, clubs and individuals all over Ireland with the help of Good Causes funding. The Awards will be televised on Virgin Media One TV on Sunday November 11 at 9pm. There

was great excitement when Virgin Media One visited the groups in the last week to film for the Awards show.  Cairde na Cruite promotes the revival of the Irish Harp, something which has been a strong Irish tradition for

over 1,000 years. Meanwhile the Cox’s Demesne Youth & Community Project provides a space for young

people in the community who are excluded from all mainstream programmes, projects, and clubs.

Checkpoint had started too early

A man who was charged with drink driving escaped a conviction at Dundalk District Court after the defence barrister argued successfully that he was stopped by Gardai 50 minutes before they were authorised to carry out a checkpoint. Patrick McKenna (60) of 71 Carrick Broad Road, Dromintee, Newry, was stopped at a checkpoint at Monascriebe, Faughart, on February 9 this year at 10.10pm. However, it was pointed out that the authorisation stated that the checkpoint was scheduled to start at 11pm. As a result, Judge John Coughlan stated that the Gardai had no authority to carry out the checkpoint before that time and he dismissed the case.

Avoided drink drive conviction

A man who was charged with drink driving had the case against him dismissed at Dundalk District Court. Andrew McGreehan (31) of Castletowncooley, Riverstown, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai at the Racecourse Road on March 11 this year. A sample taken revealed that he was over the limit for driving. However, the defence barrister argued that absence of evidence from the Garda who carried out the 20-minute observation prior to the test meant there was a break in the continuity of evidence and as a result he was entitled to have the case dismissed. Judge John Coughlan agreed and dismissed the matter.

AA URGES MOTORISTS TO BEGIN WINTER PREPARATIONS AFTER STORMS

On the heels of Storm Helene, Storm Ali and Storm Callum, AA Ireland is urging motorists to ensure their car is winter ready and that they have a plan in place in the event of a car breakdown as weather conditions take a turn for the worst. The warning comes the day after Storm Ali affected parts of Ireland, with AA Rescue, the motoring organisation’s breakdown assistance service, attending over 300 breakdowns on Wednesday alone. With further unsettled conditions likely over the coming months, the AA is urging motorists to carry out a basic car maintenance check, including a check of tyres and their battery, to ensure their car is ready for the months ahead. “Storm Ali certainly resulted in some very difficult driving conditions across the country and we need to prepare ourselves for the likelihood that we could see similar weather events in the weeks and months ahead. While 300 breakdowns in a day is the norm for AA Rescue we did receive a number of calls to cars damaged by falling trees and branches, including one incident where someone’s keys were blown away by the winds and couldn’t be recovered,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “After the good weather we

have enjoyed over the past few months, many of us may have let car maintenance slip a little bit but keeping your car in good condition is vital to keeping our roads safe.” “For now, checking the condition of your tyres and your windscreen wipers is probably the most important aspect of car maintenance as the weather conditions we experience at this time of year, such as heavy rain and strong winds, can impact on your visibility or your car’s traction with the road. However, as we move into the winter and temperatures dip, our AA Rescue team will likely see an increase in breakdowns caused by old or faulty batteries so it’s certainly no harm to get your battery checked now ahead of time.” The motoring organisation also urged motorists to be extra vigilant when driving during the months ahead as poor weather conditions and reduced daylight can lead to a reduction in visibility. The AA put significant emphasis on how these conditions

can make cyclists or pedestrians difficult to see and urged motorists to use their lights where required and to allow extra distance when passing a vulnerable road user. “We all have a role to play when it comes to keeping our roads safe, but given that motor vehicles have a greater potential to cause damage drivers must be extra vigilant in the weeks and months ahead. The winter months are traditionally a dangerous period on our roads so we would advise motorists to allow extra distance between themselves and other road users and only overtake when and where it is safe to do so,” Faughnan added. “To date over 100 people have been killed on our roads this year and as conditions worsen there is a real risk of this figure increasing further. Keeping your car in good condition and adapting your driving to the weather conditions may seem like a small thing but it can certainly play a very important role in preventing collisions on our roads.”
