A fundraiser page designed to help pay for a life changing operation to improve the life of two-year old Zoe Murphy has almost reached the halfway target with just under €48,000 raised to date. Two-year old Zoe Murphy was born with quadriplegia and cerebral palsy at 21 months old and as a result suffers with spasticity and restricted movement. Zoe’s parents Lynda Bannon and Eamonn Murphy were told by doctors that their daughter faced the prospect of being in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. However, after being introduced to CBD oil Zoe Continued on Page 2

Jordan claims his 13th world record Dundalk power lifter, Jordan Holland, is continuing to take the sport by storm after recording his 13th world record recently. Jordan was competing in the World Full Power Championships in Glasgow on November 2 in which he won world titles at U-18, U-20 and U-23 level. The competition is the three powerlifting movements - squat, bench press and deadlift, with the total of the biggest lifts been added together to determine the winner. Full Story Page 20

destroy problematic nerve roots in the spinal cord - potentially eradicating spasticity as Zoe’s bones/muscles continue to grow. That surgery will cost €100,000 and three months ago Lynda and husband Eamonn set out on the long

jewellers. Once again I’d like to thank everybody who has helped out and given Zoe the chance to reach her best potential,” added Lynda.

road towards raising funds to match that total. Thanks to the generosity of the local community the fund has almost reached €50,000 and Lynda was at pains to thank all who have contributed so far. “I honestly can’t believe we are almost half way towards our target of €100,000. People around the town and beyond have been so generous.

Even the Dundalk FC football team have got involved and helped us out and I have to say it has been very touching to see this all unfold. Everywhere we go now people come up to Zoe and ask her how she is getting on and she is loving all the attention,” laughs Lynda. “I remember our first fundraiser didn’t bring too much on and we felt a bit disheartened but since then the

momentum has been unbelievable and for the first time I really believe we are going to be able to send Zoe to America for the operation. I would especially like to thank the Murphy family for handing us a cheque for €20,416 which was brought in from various fundraisers including a quiz night in the Lisdoo and a Dundalk FC Kit poster which was designed and

produced by Eamonn’s uncle Jim and his two sons. I also have to thank my brother-inlaw Alan Gray who has donated proceeds from his new kid’s jewellery collection to our fund. “We have one last big fundraiser to end 2018 on December 30 in the Lisdoo in Dundalk. We are having a pre-New Year’s Eve Party which we are calling ‘Total Tribute’ and we will have music from a host

Fitzer confident despite new GAA stadium delay

Plans to build a new GAA stadium in Louth hit yet another speedbump this week but according to local TD Peter Fitzpatrick confidence is still high that the proposal will be ratified next month. The Louth GAA County board took a major step towards finding a new home in September when they unanimously endorsed the purchase of a site adjacent to the old Heinz factory on the Inner Relief Road. The twelve-acre site consists of approximately nine acres which belong to Louth County Council and approximately three acres which belong to DKIT. The first stage of the development will allow a capacity of 12000 into the ground although eventually there would be a capacity for 22000 when the development is finished. However, despite approval from Louth County Board, Louth County Council and DKIT there had been a

stumbling block to the ambitious plans with news that a number of councillors had voiced concerns about the amount of money being received for the land owned by the council. Sinn Fein councillors along with a number of Drogheda councillors raised concerns about the project and had indicated that they were set to vote against the ambitious plans for a stadium in Dundalk. Councillors were due to vote for the proposals at October’s monthly council meeting but the topic was taken off the agenda at the last minute to give the steering committee who are in charge of delivering the stadium more time to listen to councillors concerns. On Monday the topic was once again due to be discussed and voted for by councillors at the November monthly council meeting but once again the vote was withdrawn from the agenda after a legal issue was raised

by a number of councillors. Speaking yesterday morning (Tuesday) Peter Fitzpatrick TD insisted that the legal issues were just a minor technicality while stating he was confident that the proposals would be ratified next month. “The proposals to vote through plans to build a GAA stadium on the inner relief road in Dundalk were withdrawn at Monday’s Louth County Council meeting but that was due to a small technicality and I remain confident that the plans will be ratified next month on December 17 at the next council meeting. I believe there was an issue with some information regarding the project which was due to be delivered by hard copy but it didn’t arrive so councillors decided to hold back until next month for the vote. “We have met with all of the councillors and I’m confident that we will get this issue

ratified in December. I don’t see any reason why it won’t be ratified and I remain confident that the stadium will be up and running by June 2020,” noted Peter. When questioned about reports that the land has been valued at €950,000 which is significantly more than the €400,00 agreed for the sale of the site, Fitzpatrick stated that he didn’t know where those reports had come from. “I’m not sure what this €950,000 is about. As far as I’m concerned Louth County Council have agreed to sell the land for €400,000 and that is where we are with regards to the sale of the land. “This is hugely important for the county as we are one of the very few counties in the country without our own GAA stadium. It is a good thing for the people of the county and as I said I remain confident that the plans will be ratified next month,” concluded the Independent TD.

Sinn Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams has described the government’s response to the escalating criminal violence in Louth as “not good enough”. The Louth TD was speaking in the Dáil today on the recent violence in Drogheda and Dundalk related to drug crime. Teachta Adams accused the Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan of failing to answer pertinent questions relating to the resourcing of the Gardaí in Louth and for local community youth diversionary projects. Gerry Adams said: “Incidents of drug related crime in Dundalk

and Drogheda have escalated to an intolerable level. Since I was first elected as a TD I and other Sinn Fein representatives have worked closely with An Garda Síochána. “Those who are the target of such attacks are victim of unscrupulous and dangerous drug pushers who are targeting them for drug debts that are not theirs. In one particular case one family had €11,000 demanded from it. “I wrote to the Minister about this. I also spoke to senior Gardai about this. In his response the Minister said that An Garda Sío-

chána was reviewing its ‘Drug Related Intimidation Reporting Programme’. “When I asked the Minister to tell us if that review is complete he refused to respond. I told him that was not good enough. “When I asked the Minister if he accepted that additional resources are needed for projects like the Garda Youth Diversionary Projects; High Voltage and Team in Dundalk, the Boyne and Cable in Drogheda, and the Family Addiction Support Network, he refused to respond. I told him that was not good enough,” he said.

Delivered by Irish health and fitness expert, Tom Dalton, topics covered will include an active workout plus talks and tips on healthy eating, all designed to improve children’s general fitness through engaging and funfilled activities. The pilot programme – launched in May and implemented across a two-month pe-

riod – saw over 2,500 children participate in some 45 interactive sessions in 22 locations throughout Ireland. In light of its popularity, Fyffes has expanded the schedule with the aim of reaching a further 1,500 children in 20 locations before the end of December next. Graduates of the Community Addiction Studies Course (CASC) were presented with their certificates on November 8 in the Crowne Plaza Dundalk. Certificates were presented by Jim Mullery, Chairperson of the North Eastern Regional Drug & Alcohol Task Force. Jim paid tribute to the hard work and commitment of the group to strengthen the capacity of the community to respond to addiction which begins with understanding the process of addiction and the capacity for change and recovery. Jim paid tribute to the CASC group who took up this challenge to learn and understand. The Community Addiction

Studies Course is for people living or working in local communities who wish to be more effective when dealing with drug and alcohol issues. It is a parttime evening course developed by URRUS, a Ballymun Youth Action Project, the programme is QQI Fetac Level 5 accredited. The course runs for 20 weeks for three hours per week plus one Saturday. The course proved enormously popular and participants would acknowledge that it greatly resourced them to have a much broader understanding of the complexities of the drugs issue and built their capacity and that of the communities they repre-

sented to respond to these issues It is established that the complex problem of substance misuse will not be resolved by any single agency. This collaborative approach between the different agencies with the sharing of skills and ideas between all sectors provides an excellent example of how much more effective we can be when we work together to meet these challenges. The next Community Addiction Studies course will begin in January 2019 and interviews will be held in December if you are interested please contact: David Griffin, Tel: 046 9248630 or you can email: info@nedrugtaskforce.ie.

recent deaths Hair Design 21-22 Dublin Street, Dundalk. Tel: 042 935 2939. Welcome Back Sinead Mellon To The Monet Hair Design Team

Pamela McKenna first opened the doors of Monet Hair Design back in 1999 and since then has established the salon as a landmark business on Dublin Street. Key to Pamela’s success is her ability to constantly react to changing trends and to mark the upcoming 20th anniversary of Monet Hair Design, Pamela's latest innovative move is to appoint Sinead Mellon as Salon Manager. Sinead initially joined the salon in 2000 where she worked weekends before becoming a full-time employee in 2002. Having spent the following 11 years honing her trade and climbing the ranks from Junior to Senior Stylist, Sinead decided to try something different in 2013 and branched out on her own hairdressing journey. The following 5 years were spent constantly updating her skills and continuing to develop her hair craft and is currently studying for her Teaching Masters Degree. Pamela is now delighted to welcome back Sinead, a Pearse Park native to the Monet Hair Design team, 18 years after first walking through the salon door as a Trainee, this time as Salon Manager. No stranger to hard work, Sinead is continuing to develop her skills in the field of hairdressing by studying for a new qualification and showing that even after 18 years she is still eager to learn new styles and keep her finger on the pulse of the latest hair trends. Speaking about her return to Monet in a recent interview, she expressed her delight at getting the chance to rejoin many of the team she worked with originally, ’When I first started in Monet I was delighted to get the opportunity to begin my career in hairdressing and now 18 years later it’s an amazing chance for me to show and share all the skills I’ve learned over the years both at Monet

and during my time away. It’s an exciting time both personally and for the salon and I look forward to working with Pamela and the girls. I just can’t wait to get started!'.

Hands-on learning for primary students at DkIT Science Week

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT) opened its laboratories to more than 1,200 primary school children from across the North Leinster-South Ulster region this week as part of Science Week, the annual festival of learning and discovery. Students from third to sixth class took part in a variety of interactive demonstrations and lab classes aimed at encouraging them to explore science in their everyday lives, ask questions and find out how science explains the world around us. The Science Week programme was coordinated by the Department of Applied Sciences at DkIT and other researchers from within the Institute. The week commenced with a “Fantastic DNA” Cell Explorers, a hands-on lab class which uncovers the themes of cellular and molecular biology. Budding explorers discovered DNA by building

Marshes make donation to St Louis

Marshes Shopping Centre last week donated 20 Chromebooks to St Louis Secondary School in the first donation of their new community initiative. “900 people are employed at Marshes Shopping Centre, and many have strong links to the school,” said Aoife Kerley of Marshes Shopping Centre. The donation forms part of Marshes community initiative, Marshes Community Fund, which supports local causes put forward by Marshes customers.

“As Marshes is involved with a number of local causes, we received a lot of requests to assist the school and are very happy to help.” The donation was warmly welcomed by the Principal and Deputy-Principal of St Louis Secondary School. “The gift from Marshes is very generous and well-timed, especially as it fits in perfectly with targets around the promotion of digital literacy in our school,” said principal Michelle Dolan. “We plan to use the

Chromebooks for the accelerated reader programme which has been rolled out to first years.” Deputy Principal Mary Gilmore echoed Ms Dolan’s sentiments, saying that the donation will be a great benefit to school life. “The generous gift from Marshes supports our work in enhancing the digital skills of our junior cycle students,” she said. “This support is very welcome and will be of great benefit to students and teachers.”

Attack on tall ship docked in Carlingford Gardaí are investigating an attack on a tall ship which was docked in Carlingford Harbour over the weekend. The ‘La Malouine’ was damaged in the early hours of Sunday morning. The La Malouine is a twin-masted French Brigantine tall ship, registered in the Port of Dumfries and was berthed on Carlingford Lough over the weekend where she was boarded and attacked by vandals. According to the ship’s facebook page the vandals also tried to set the tall ship on fire. “Last night vandals boarded La Malouine as she was berthed in Carlingford Lough, vandalised, urinated, defecated and attempted in three separate sections of the boat to start fires which would have disguised

their actions and completely destroyed the vessel. One such fire they attempted to light with the ships log. “Although extensive smoke damage was done to the galley and captain’s cabin, we are thankful that the vandals were unable, despite their best efforts, to light the gas bottle stored on board which would have proved disastrous to the boat and, most likely, the vandals themselves. “The same persons boarded and vandalised a fishermans boat, berthed directly ahead of La Malouine and vandalised the Ship Masters car, rendering it undrivable and damaging then throwing his bike into the harbour along with expensive sailing jackets and ships equipment. “As we speak, the

ship’s Captain and Crew are working to rectify the damage and return the vessel to a sailable condition. “We are sickened by this disgusting act. The purpose of La Malouine and Tall Ships like her are to keep a tradition of sailing alive which would otherwise be lost to history. Whilst working towards that goal, we look to help disadvantaged young people discover within themselves a sense of fellowship, self-worth and confidence. “Such a pointless act as this, for who knows what goal, has the potential to affect so many lives, it pushes me to the point of tears. As with many of you, I am tonight sending my best wishes to the captain and crew as they work into the wee hours to re-

turn the boat to service,” concluded the statement. Any information with regards to this incident should be reported to Carlingford Garda Station on 042 9373102. There was also an attempted arson attack on an off duty Garda car during the early hours of Monday morning at approximately 3.30am. Gardaí are investigating an incident of criminal damage by fire to a car at a house in the Red Barns Road area of Dundalk that occurred on November 19. No injuries were sustained in this incident. Investigations are ongoing. Finally, there was one attempted burglary on a housing estate off the Avenue Road on November 12. Access was gained into the house from a rear window but nothing was taken.

Kammerstad pulled away from the field in the final round to secure victory but a very good 80 from Lawlor ensured he stayed in second and capped a

very good weekend off for the Louth Village man. Brendan who was born with Ellis-Van Creveld Syndrome, a bone growth disorder that leads to shorter limbs, has been a member of the European Disabled Golfers Tour for just under a year and he has made a huge impact already winning tournaments in France, Portugal and Czech Republic to climb up the official world rankings where he currently sits at number three. Brendan met up with many professional players at the event and managed to get his picture taken alongside Us Ryder Cup star Brandt Snedeker and Australian professional Cameron Smith. Speaking after the event which was broadcast all over the world the 21-year old spoke glowingly

about his experience in Australia. “What can I say? I had the best experience of my life at the All Abilities Australian Open. It’s safe to say I am over the moon with finishing second on the world stage. I would like to thank friends family and sponsers for the well wishes and support before and during the event. Fans were incredible this week too. Thank you ‘Golf Australia’ and EDGA (European Disabled Golf Association) for giving us this amazing chance to showcase our talents. Now come on Europe next week and the World Cup of golf,” stated Brendan. Brendan will remain in Australia and will now travel to Melbourne where he will take part in the World Cup of Golf between Europe and Australia.

the road

A man who was driving while disqualified was banned from the road for ten years when he pleaded guilty to a no insurance charge at Dundalk District Court. Drajan Zolja (34) of 34 Castleross, Castletown Road, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai at Mullaharlin on October 29 last year. Solicitor Paula Tiernan stated that her client supported his partner and child, and that he needed his licence to get to work. However, Judge John Coughlan stated that the defendant had been driving while disqualified as he imposed a ten-year disqualification and €10 fine. He warned Mr Zolja that the next time he drove while disqualified he would be sent to prison for a long time.

Call for full redundancies to be paid by Authentic Food Sinn Féin TD for Louth Gerry Adams has called on the former Director of The Authentic Food Company (TAFC) to honour staff redundancy payments. Teachta Adams was commenting on the liquidator’s High Court petition, which was heard on Monday November 12. “My office made contact with the liquidators, Deloitte, who were formally appointed during the high court appearance on Monday.

The liquidators confirmed to me that the company is now deemed terminally insolvent and they do not hold any realistic hope of TAFC being bought as a going concern. They also provided me with a copy of the report presented to the high court. “This report indicates the Dundalk company to have assets of €11.9 million and liabilities of €26.6 million, with €8.5 million of this owed to ‘group companies’,” stated Mr Adams.

“In light of this I have again written to the former company director, Nik Basran, who I understand is also the director of the other Alternative Food Company groups, asking him to honour staff redundancy packages. “Many staff of TAFC were long term employees with years of redundancy entitlements built up. They have been treated shamefully by an unscrupulous employer which cut them adrift in the run up to Christmas,” he added.

Cuchulainn CC compete in Leinster Championships Oldcastle Cycling Club will be hosting the Leinster Cyclo Cross Championships next month and on Sunday last they hosted the warm up event. The venue was Drewstone House, just outside of Kells, Co. Meath and it proved to be a very successful day for Cuchulain’s riders. The first event of the day was the under 10s and in the girl’s race the club claimed first and second through with Nessa McCrystal and Rowan Whelan respectively. In the under 10 boys Shane Meegan

battled back from a mechanical to take third. In the under 12 girls it was another club one two for sisters Rhiannon and Ffionn Dolan. In the same race Grace O’Rourke was unlucky to be involved in an early crash however, she managed to fight her way back up through the filed but just missed out on a podium finish. In the under 12 boys Callum McCaffrey came second. Also in the under 12 boys, Lochlain Carey and Felim Teggart made their competitive debut and both dem-

onstrated that they were well fit to mix it up with more experienced cyclists. In total the club had 15 riders competing across the various underage categories. In the Senior B race Ray Fedigan had his best ever finish in a cyclo cross race to take third place in the race, and this added to his consistent form in the Oldcastle league seen him also claiming third overall in the league. Stuart Holden suffered a mechanical problem but managed to fight his way Ray Fedigan in action for Cuchulainn Cycling Club back to fifth place.

Screening project on River Fane Inland Fisheries Ireland will support a new screening project on the River Fane in Dundalk. The project, which will be funded under the Salmon Conservation Fund, may support future salmon conservation works on the river and will be managed by the Dundalk Salmon Anglers. In June, Inland Fisheries Ireland announced the opening of the Salmon Conservation Fund through the National Strategy for Angling Development Scheme 2018 with a fund available for habitat restoration and conservation projects. This project in Louth will see an investment of €1,500 by Inland Fisheries Ireland on the River Fane at Knockbridge, Grange, Dundalk. It will support an ‘Ap-

propriate Assessment Screening’ project which will be carried out on the site to determine if future salmon conservation projects may be suitable. The National Strategy for Angling Development aims to ensure that Ireland’s fish stocks and angling infrastructure are protected and enhanced with a view to ensuring a sustainable habitat and the delivery of the economic, health and recreational benefits they offer to communities across Ireland. Applications to the 2018 scheme were invited from groups, associations, clubs, local authorities and other appropriate bodies looking to support habitat restoration and conservation. Suzanne Campion, Head of

Business Development said: “The initiative in Louth will see the Dundalk Salmon Anglers undertake Appropriate Assessment Screening on the River Fane, a crucial step before potential salmon conservation works can be carried out. The conservation of our indigenous fish populations is crucial if we are to ensure the sustainability of our fisheries resource in the long term. The National Strategy for Angling Development Scheme supports projects nationwide, such as this one in Louth, which is focusing on restoration and conservation. Gerry Adams and Imelda Munster TD together with six councillors and a number of activists wearWe look forward to supporting ing purple in support of Women’s Aid days of action Dundalk Salmon Anglers in the delivery of this project this year.”

Support for Womens Aid’s Days of Action The 40 shades of green were replaced with 40 shades of purple as Sinn Féin Councillors together with TDs Gerry Adams and Imelda Munster and a host of activists came together to support Womens Aid and their 16 Days of Action. Cllr Edel Corrigan who has long been an advocate for women’s rights and equality said “violence against women is an on-going issue, sometimes resulting in fatalities but around this time of

Celebrating English Week at St Marys College

year, violence and abuse towards women increases and of course the children are affected as well. This becomes a dangerous time for women in an abusive relationship. Women’s Aid do fantastic work and is a caring organisation that welcomes women into their safe environment at a time when they are fearful for their safety.” Councillors Anne Campbell and Edel Corrigan encouraged all activists to turn up at a recent event wearing purple to show

their support. Cllr Campbell said “Women’s Aid is having 16 days of Action to raise awareness of ‘gender based violence’ and the 16 days run from 25th November – 10th December. They are asking that work places, schools, colleges, groups and any gatherings turn purple, even just for a day and it’s equally important to post pictures especially on social media when you do it and explain the reasons why.”
