Plans to build a new county ground for Louth GAA in Dundalk have hit a speed bump after a number of councillors indicated that they would vote against the proposal ahead of last Monday’s monthly Louth County Council meeting.

The Louth GAA County board took a major step towards finding a new home last month when they unanimously endorsed the purchase of a site adjacent to the former Heinz factory on the

Inner Relief Road. The 12-acre site consists of approximately nine acres which belong to Louth County Council and approximately three acres which belong to DkIT. The first stage of the development will allow a capacity of 12,000 into the ground although eventually there would be a capacity for 22,000 when the development is finished.

Banned From Road

A man who pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge at Dundalk District Court was banned from the road for three years.

Alan Carr (31) of 53 Park St, Dundalk, admitted the offence at St Helena on March 23 this year.

The court heard that the former tiler who is on disability benefit had no previous convictions.

Judge John Coughlan also imposed a €25 fine.

A man who admitted two public order charges avoided a conviction at Dundalk District Court when he agreed to make a €300 donation to charity.

Richard Smith (28) of 9 Drive 2, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, appeared as a result of an incident on the Dublin Road on September 22 this year.

Judge John Coughlan accepted the donation to court and struck the matter out.

The Mochtas turned in another stunning performance as they held off St Fechins in a dramatic final at Castlebellingham.

Relatives remember SS Dundalk centenary

Relatives of those who perished on the SS Dundalk in October 1918 were amongst those who took part in a number of commemorations on Sunday to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the ship.

There were 32 people on board the SS Dundalk on that fateful night and twenty people (nineteen men and one woman) perished as the merchant vessel was sunk by a torpedo. Seventeen of those who died were from the Dundalk area. The SS Dundalk committee arranged a number of events including an ecumenical service in St Patrick’s Cathedral and a final prayer at the Quay outside the Spirit Store at 11:10pm, exactly one hundred years to the moment Marie Agnew, secretary of the SS Dundalk Centenary Committee and she described Sunday’s events as ‘extremely poignant’.

“The whole day went very well and we were absolutely thrilled with the turnout. When you put so much time and effort into planning events like this the worry is nobody will turn up but thankfully we had a huge turnout including many relatives of those

who were aboard the SS Dundalk on that fateful evening,” stated Marie.

“We had a colour party made up of ex-servicemen from the O.N.E and they were led in by Mark Toner who is from the Quay on the bagpipes. There were also members of the defence forces, Lieutenant Commander Stephen Byrne from the navy, Captain Carl Muckian, members of the coast guard, fire service as well as the ambulance service. We also had a very special guest in Captain Sean Rooney, from the Isle of Man Sea Packet Company who took part in a commemoration with us earlier in the year at the exact spot the boat was sunk.

“Fr Mark O’Hagan led the ceremony and he was assisted by Rev Geoffrey Walmsley and Rev. John Woodside. David Martin and Brendan Cleary sang beautifully during the service and we had relatives of people on board the SS Dundalk reading prayers of the faithful including grandchildren and great grandchildren.

“After the service we unveiled two plaques in St Patrick’s to mark the centenary commemorations of the sinking of the SS Dundalk. There already is one plaque

in the church but there was one name missing from that so we unveiled a new plaque with the name of Harold Grey added who was an eighteen year old royal navy gunner. His grandnephew Peter Grey made the trip to unveil the plaque. There was also a centenary commemorative plaque unveiled

by Anne Howard who is the granddaughter of captain Hugh O’Neill.

Afterwards we had refreshments in the Presbyterian hall on Jocelyn St,” explained Marie.

Later that evening we went to George’s Quay outside the Spirit Store where we commemorated the exact moment of the sinking of the SS Dundalk. At 11:10pm we stood by the quay and said some prayers along with Fr. Brendan Callinan.

There was a minute’s silence which was impeccably observed to remember the moment and it was a very poignant moment for everybody there. We ended the evening by blessing a wreath and hanging it in the Spirit Store.

Marist goes bananas for wellbeing This week at St. Mary’s College, Mental Health Week was celebrated through a myriad of activities and workshops.

The week began with 5000 Steps to Wellbeing. The students and teachers took part in the walk and this was followed by the students receiving a wellbeing pack. The theme of the walk, Marist Goes Bananas for Wellbeing was inspired by the generous donation of bananas from Fyffes.

The fifth-year students participated in the Aware – Beat the Blues workshop. Here the students were exposed to the various coping strategies to help develop resilience. Meanwhile the first-year students enjoyed mindfulness colouring in a tranquil

The sixth-year students participated in a stress management workshop hosted by Nicola Hanlon of the Rejuvenate Suite. The students learned about the importance of nutrition, sleep strategies and

dents are currently been displayed on our Wellness Wall.

The week was a huge success and it reinforced the holistic and community spirit in St. Mary’s College while embedding wellbeing across the year groups.

Walk for Haiti

At 4.53pm on January 12, 2010, the small Caribbean island of Haiti was devastated by a powerful earthquake.

230,000 people died. 300,000 were injured. Over 1.5 million were displaced.

An entire generation of Haitian children were left orphaned, homeless and vulnerable.

Haiti Orphanage Project ESPWA is an Irish NGO established in 2011 by a group of volunteers to support vulnerable children in Haiti. Newtownbalregan man Kieran Tansey is a director for the organisation and travelled to Haiti just last summer to help disadvantaged children in the region.

The organisation’s achievements to date include new dormitories; a new kitchen and canteen facilities; pathways for wheelchair access; water & sanitation and livelihoods training for

Haitian team members.

Now Kieran is part of a fundraising team who are organising a sponsored walk in Bray later this month to raise money for the disadvantaged people in Haiti.

“Haiti Orphanage Project ESPWA relies exclusively on public fundraising and does not receive any government funding. All the work we carry out is on a voluntary basis, with the team giving freely of our time and expertise. As a result, 100% of fundraising goes directly to their projects on the ground.

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has welcomed Southern Regional College (SRC) as the first Northern Ireland partner to join the North East Further and Higher Education Alliance (NEFHEA). SRC was officially inaugurated to the Alliance today by the Minister for State for Higher Education, Mary Mitchell O’Connor, TD at a meeting in its Newry campus.

NEFHEA is a regional higher and further education initiative comprising institutions in the North East region. Underpinned

by a Memorandum of Understanding, its members are committed to working together to promote access, transfer and progression between further and higher education providers in the North Leinster-South Ulster region. Its membership includes Southern Regional College, Drogheda Institute of Further Education, Monaghan Institute, Cavan Institute, O’Fiaich College and Dunboyne College of Further Education.

Burglars target local businesses

Two local businesses were the targets for burglars this week with both the DPD depot on the Coe’s Road and Pizza Hut on the Dublin Road broken into. At approximately 3:45am on October 15 a number of individuals are understood to have removed a gate which was protecting an office window. They then proceeded to gain entry into the office by smashing the window and took a sum of cash from the premises.

Meanwhile a lone male broke into Pizza Hut on the Dublin Rd at approximately 7:15am on October 14.

He tried to open both the till e and the safe but was unable to do so although he did cause h damage to both. Anybody who has information on either of the above cases can contact gardaí on d 0429335577.

National Harp Day event

To mark National Harp Day in County Louth, The Music Generation Louth Junior Harp Ensemble extend an invitation to come and explore the harp with them at 11am on Saturday October 20 in County Library, Dundalk.

The event will include a short performance followed by an opportunity for anyone interested to come and try the harp. The MGL Senior Harp Ensemble will take part in a Rising Stars Performance at the Pearse Museum, St. Enda’s in Rathfarnham Dublin at 3pm.

Following a search of the car gardaí found €120 worth of cannabis herb and €42000 worth of cocaine.

Noel takes the honours at Dundalk Golf Club Noel Reid (13) took full advantage of perfect weather conditions to win Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition with his 21pts down the back nine enough to pip David Murden (9) on countback after both carded rounds of 39pts.

Reid got off to the perfect start with a birdie three for four points on the first hole and although he only picked up one point from the two par fives he managed to cover the front nine in 18pts.

SS Dundalk Exhibition

GAA stadium plan hits a stumbling block from page 1 stumbling block to the ambitious plans with news that a number of councillors have voiced concerns about the amount of money being received for the land owned by the council.

It is believed that a number of councillors had raised concerns about the project and approval was not guaranteed.

It is believed that the council are willing to sell the land for about €400,000 but this has raised concerns amongst a number of councillors who believe the land is worth a lot more. Councillors were due to vote for the proposals at Monday’s monthly council meeting but the topic was taken off the agenda at the last minute to give the steering committee who are in charge of delivering the stadium more time to listen to councillors’ concerns.

Peter Fitzpatrick urged councillors not to let this golden opportunity for Louth slip through their fingers and stated that he along with members of the steering committee will listen to their concerns over the Peter Fitzpatrick TD next few weeks.

A woman who refused to provide a sample for Gardai after being arrested on suspicion of drink driving escaped a conviction on a technicality at Dundalk District Court.

Solicitor James MacGuill successfully argued that Gardai had failed to record a reason as to why an interpreter was not required for Katarzyna Wozniak of 47 Garrybawn, Tom Bellew Avenue, Dundalk.

He stated that even if Gardai decide that a person does not require an interpreter, that reason must be entered in the

custody record. In this case there was no reason given.

The State’s case was that the defendant spoke good English throughout the process and that an interpreter was not needed.

However, Judge John Coughlan ruled that this should have been recorded and he dismissed the case.

Ms Wozniak also had a criminal damage charge struck out after she paid compensation for damage caused at the Garda Station on August 20 last year.

Double for Ardee Band

Ardee Concert Band took part in The North of Ireland Band Association Championships in Armagh last Saturday under the baton of James MacCafferty.

The 34 strong Youth Band played three pieces Celtic Air and Dance, Joyful Journey and Game of Thrones as they brought home second place.

The senior band’s 45 members took home the first prize place and the very extravagant trophy.

the AA is glad to see that there is no tax increase on fuel in the Budget. The organisation had warned that it would have been a fiscally punitive but environmentally pointless measure.

“Fuel is already hyper-taxed as it is,” says Director of Consumer Affairs Conor Faughnan. “A taxfree litre of diesel would cost 64 cents, petrol 58 cents. The retail price of both fuels is actually €1.40 for diesel and €1.46 for petrol because of a succession of tax increases in the past.

“Increasing the cost of living for existing users of fossil fuels does not help with our carbon and climate challenge. We are glad it didn’t happen but are disappointed not to see more genuine environmental measures. Increased incentives to move to ultra lowemission and electric cars could have been considered, as could measures to promote alternatives to car use. Homeowners can be incentivised to upgrade heating and insulation rather than simply taxed. NO such imaginative mea-

sures were included.

“We avoided the stick but there were no carrots.”

The AA notes that the VRT on diesel cars will increase by 1%, affecting second hand imports as well as new cars. This is a small measure (€25m) and is better for the consumer in that it does not affect existing owners. It influences their decision to buy a diesel car, rather than hitting their fuel costs afterwards. It will add approximately €100 to €200

to the cost of a new or newly imported diesel car.

The AA also provides hotel inspection, grading and consultancy services and was very disappointed to see the loss of the low 9% VAT rate.

“This is a disappointment but well signalled in advance,” says Faughnan. “It seems to be a measure that is punishing success.

The low VAT rate very clearly worked very well, which seems an illogical reason for ending it.”

JUST 4 IN 10 WOULD ASSIST MOTORIST DURING A BREAKDOWN

Less than 40% of motorists would stop and offer assistance to a driver who has experienced a car breakdown according to a recent survey.

In response to a survey of over 5,000 motorists undertaken

by AA Rescue, the breakdown assistance wing of AA Ireland, 38.79% of respondents indicated that in the event of encountering a broken down vehicle they would be very likely to offer the driver assistance.

Meanwhile, a further 35.59% indicated that they would be somewhat likely to offer assistance but would have some reservations in doing so.

Of those surveyed, almost 55% indicated that concerns about their personal safety would be one of the key factors preventing them from offering assistance to a broken down motorist. 16.91% of respondents ‘strongly agreed’ that they would not stop out of fear of jeopardising their safety with a further 37.41% ‘somewhat agreeing’ this was the case.

“Breakdowns are almost an unavoidable part of motoring life as even if you follow all the manufacturer’s servicing guidelines things will unfortunately go wrong. With this in mind it’s important for motorists to consider who they would be able to contact for assistance if

they were to have a car issue as there is at least some reluctance on the part of passing motorists to offer help,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “Ultimately, people always have to prioritise their own personal safety and it’s understandable that people would choose to do so, but breakdowns can be a huge cause of stress so even offering the affected motorist use of your phone could be a huge help.”

Unsurprisingly, the survey did find an increased willingness on the behalf of respondents to offer assistance to an elderly driver who had suffered a breakdown.

When asked about a hypothetical breakdown affecting an elderly driver, 54.35% of respondents stated they would be very likely to stop and offer assistance, with a further 30.07% describing themselves as some-

what likely to do so.

“Many of us will have experienced a breakdown at some point in the past so we have a degree of sympathy any time we come across one and will clearly be willing to offer assistance in some cases. However, individual motorists need to give some thought to their own breakdown planning, particularly if they’re not highly knowledgeable in terms of basic car repairs,” Faughnan added.

“Whether it’s the AA, your spouse, a family member or friend you want to know who you will be contacting in the event of a breakdown. The last thing you want during the panic that a breakdown will cause is to find yourself searching through your contacts questioning who out of your friends, family and co-workers knows the most about car repairs!”
