Two local Louth County councillors are amongst the nominations to contest the Louth Selection Convention for Fine Gael following Thursday evening’s announcement by Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick that he will not be standing in the next election.

Over the weekend both Cllr John McGahon and Cllr Maria Doyle publicly stated that they will contest the forthcoming Fine Gael Selection Convention on August 23rd. Cllr McGahon was the first person to throw his hat into the ring when he announced last Friday morning that he would be putting his name forward for selection. On Sunday evening Cllr Maria Doyle

revealed that she too had been nominated and was looking forward to meeting up with party members to state her case for selection.

Cllr Maria Doyle admitted that she was surprised to hear Peter Fitzpatrick announce that he would be stepping down and stated that she was honoured to have been nominated to contest the Fine Gael Selection Convention next Thursday (23rd).

The Nose of Tralee is Ireland’s largest pet competition that is open to all types of pets. 2018 is the 5th year of the competition and each year more and more people from all over Ireland take part in a bid to win the title of Nose of Tralee.

The competition is open to pet owners in all 32 counties of Ireland and all pets are welcome – dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, horses etc.

The competition aims to celebrate the love people have for their pets. Last year there was success for Louth when Coleen

Nuala Mullen and Ziggy McNally’s four-year old Golden labradoodle Lenny was named the fourth ever winner of

the competition. This year Louth will be represented by one-year old cocker spaniel Ziggy

I greatly admire the many men and women who already represent their communities in Dáil Eireann and I would be humbled and thrilled to be numbered among them. I have been a local councillor for over seven years, first on Dundalk Town Council and presently on Louth County Council and I feel I’ve worked hard to represent Dundalk South during that

Accused told to stay out of two towns

An 18-year old man who has been accused of murdering teenager Cameron Reilly has been remanded on bail and ordered to stay out of the towns of Dunleer and Drogheda.

Aaron Connolly of Willistown, Drumcar was remanded on bail by Judge Alan Mitchell pending the preparation of a book of evidence. Connolly

was originally held in custody on July 6 after he was charged with the murder of Dunleer teenager Cameron Reilly who was found dead at Shamrock Hill, Dunleer on May 26.

He remained in custody until his second hearing in July 12 at Cloverhill District Court but was subsequently granted bails with conditions by the

High Court. He had been out on bail until his re-appearance at Cloverhill District Court last week.

There, Court sergeant Stephen Nalty applied for the case to be sent back to Dundalk District Court where Aaron Connolly’s first hearing took place.

Judge Mitchell reissued a warning from

the High Court order that Mr Connolly’s bail terms stated that he must stay out of Drogheda and Dunleer and that he was obliged to sign on daily at Dundalk Garda station.

Judge Mitchell then told Aaron Connolly that he had to appear again at Dundalk District Court on September 26.

Fine Gael TD Peter Fitzpatrick has confirmed he will not seek re-election for his party at the next general election.

In a statement released on Thursday evening, the former Louth GAA senior football manager said he had informed the party of his decision and would be consulting with his family on what to do next.

“This evening I in-

formed Fine Gael that I will not be seeking a nomination to run as a Fine Gael candidate in the next general election.

I would like to thank Fine Gael for their help and support since 2011 and for giving me the opportunity to represent them in the last two general elections.

Over the coming weeks, with the help of my family and close

friends, I will decide on my future plans at which point I will issue a full statement.”

Deputy Fitzpatrick has been a TD since 2011 and has been a strong advocate of healthy living and fighting obesity. Earlier this year he indicated that he would vote against repealing the eighth amendment in the referendum a stance at odds with the majority

of his party colleagues.

Fine Gael currently has two TDs in the Louth constituency with Fergus O’Dowd holding another of the five seats locally.

The race to succeed Deputy Fitzpatrick has already began with local councillor John McGahon the first man to put his hat into the ring.

McGahon announced on Friday morning that he will be contesting the Louth Selection Convention for Fine Gael on August 23rd.

“Over the last four years I have worked extremely hard to represent my hometown on Louth County Council

as a dynamic and hardworking Councillor.

Adams states concerns over mental health supports for children Sinn Féin TD for Louth Gerry Adams has expressed serious concerns at the government’s continued failure to provide adequate Child and Adolescent Mental Health supports in the region, following the recent publication of the Mental Health Commission’s report.

Commenting on the findings of the report Teachta Adams said: “This government is failing young people in need of mental health supports in Louth and across the state.

“The report shows children and young people in CHO Area 8, which covers Laois/Offaly, Longford/Westmeath and Louth/Meath, could wait up to 15 months for their initial assessment.

“Worryingly it also reveals that ten young people were admitted to adult mental health units in the region in 2017. The commission noted that this was directly related to lack of out of hours Child and Adolescent out of hour’s service in the region.

“The region covered by CHO Area 8, including Louth has the largest population of young people aged 0-18 years in the state, yet it remains understaffed and under resourced.

“I have continuously raised the unacceptable lack of mental health services in north Louth with various Ministers and with An Taoiseach.

Louth Rose Ann-Marie Duffy arrives in Tralee today ahead of the Rose festival which takes place between Friday 17th and Tuesday 21st. Ann Marie, from Glenwood in Dundalk will represent Louth in Kerry after impressing the judges in the Four Season’s Hotel in Carlingford earlier this year.

The 26-year old speech and language therapist succeeded Aoife Heffron who won last year’s event and has already enjoyed a hectic summer as Louth Rose including appearances at the Fleadh Cheoil launch, the Galway Races and many local events around the town.

Last week ahead of her trek to Tralee Ann-Marie hosted a fundraiser night in Byrne’s

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth and East Meath Declan Breathnach has said that families of all types are under severe financial pressure in the run up to schools opening next month.

Deputy Breathnach was commenting as a new report from Barnardos shows yet again that the cost of sending a child to primary or secondary school has increased in 2018. “With the average cost

of sending a child back to 4th class now at €360, and €765 for a 1st year secondary student, going back to school is a stressful time for all families In particular, for those on fixed incomes such as social protection payments, the stress and strain these costs put on family life is becoming unbearable.

“Families being forced to cut back on day to day spending or, worse, taking out short

term, high interest loans cannot be tolerated any longer.

The stress and strain it places on parents is just so unfair.

The Back to School Allowance from the Department goes nowhere near close to meeting the financial demands being placed on families.

“Any increases in social protection payments gained in the past two years have been wiped out by these rises in basic costs

for families. “What is very disturbing is the high proportion of back to school costs that arise from so called voluntary contributions. Parents are put under severe pressure to pay these fees by schools because the capitation grants they receive from the Department of Education have not increased in years despite commitments in the Programme for Government,” said Mr Breathnach.

Blackrock shortlisted for enterprise award Blackrock has been shortlisted in the 2018 Bank of Ireland Enterprising Town Awards.

This national competition was initiated in 2016 to promote local economies by bringing business and community groups together to showcase the spirit of enterprise at work in the nominated towns and villages.

A judging panel will visit the village for three hours on August 30 and will view key enterprises, talk to local businesses and community organisations, and evaluate a 30 minute presentation on how the various groups in Blackrock work together for the benefit of the overall economy of the village.

Louth Winners announced in National Lottery Good Causes Awards Cox’s Demesne and Community Project and The Mari Goretti Foundation are among six Louth organisations named as winners in the first ever National Lottery Good Causes Awards.

The awards honour the inspiring work of thousands of projects, clubs and individuals all over Ireland with the

help of Good Causes funding. Nearly 30 cent of every euro spent on National Lottery games goes back to Good Causes, which has a big impact on communities across the country.

Announcing the Louth winners. National Lottery CEO, Dermot Griffin, said: “We were bowled over by the calibre of entries and

the impact that these organisations are having in their local communities. We know that these groups are doing extraordinary things and the Good Causes awards recognize and celebrate their achievements.”

Louth winners are: Heritage: Beaulieu House and Gardens— Beaulieu House in

Drogheda is a protected structure dating from the late 17th to early 18th century. Good Causes funding has helped fund a conservation plan to repair the house and to undertake historical research.

Health & Well Being: Smashing Times Theatre & Film Company—Smashing Times is a charity that promotes

social change through performance, training and participation.

Good Causes funding has allowed it develop innovative projects that promote social justice, peace, gender equality, human rights and positive mental health.

Sport: Drogheda Boxing Club—Drogheda Boxing club has male and female members

who are not only taught boxing but also how to keep fit, discipline and social skills. Good Causes funding allowed it provide an equipped gym for members, giving them a safe environment in which to train.

Arts & Culture: Cairde na Cruite— Cairde na Cruite promotes the revival of the Irish Harp, something which has been a strong Irish tradition for over 1,000 years. Good Causes funding has helped grow the annual harp summer school, An Chúirt Chruitireachta, which now hosts international harpers and traditional musicians.

Community: Maria Goretti Foundation— The Maria Goretti Foundation is a charity based on the Cooley Peninsula

providing respite care for children with autism and physical and learning disabilities. Good Causes funding allowed it buy a fully equipped mini-bus to transport the children to and from school daily, and on day trips.

Cox’s Demense Youth & Community Project—Cox’s Demesne Youth & Community Project provides a space for young people in the community excluded from all mainstream programmes, projects, and clubs.

Good Causes funding has helped it develop drug awareness programmes, equality programmes, social education and leadership training.

These winners will represent Louth in the

East Regional finals, competing for a place in the National Finals in Dublin on November 3rd.

Each category winner will receive €10,000 and the overall Good Cause of the Year will receive an additional €25,000. The full list of County Winners can be found at www.lottery.ie/ goodcausesawards.

Nearly 30 cent in every €1 spent on Lottery games – or over €619,000 per day – goes back to Good Causes all over the country in the areas of Sports, Arts, Culture, Heritage, Community, Health, Youth and the Irish Language.

Last year alone more than €226 million was raised by players of National Lottery games for such Good Causes.

Aoife embarks on Annual Celtic Games athletics American Dream Aoife Moore Kavanagh has made waves around the legal profession in New York with the Irish law graduate becoming one of the youngest people ever to pass the New York Bar Exam. Aoife who went to school in Dromiskin graduated from Dublin University before deciding to embark on her American dream.

The 23-year-old showed the importance of never giving up on your dreams having narrowly failed the New York Bar Exam at the first time of trying. After that initial failure she put her head down and after a huge amount of studying she passed second time around and began her new job in New York last Tuesday.

According to Aoife her love of law was fostered in Dromiskin National School by her 6th Class teacher Pat Mulligan.

“I had a wonderful principal while I was at Dromiskin NS who was

also my 6th Class teacher, Mr Mulligan. He was so supportive and encouraging of my aspirations and instilled in me that anything is possible if you work hard enough. He also helped me with my New York Bar application a few months ago by providing me with a character reference so the support is continuing.

“My interest in law really came from my favourite hobbies, reading, writing and debating. I thought, what am I good at that I can also make a living from?

English was always

my favourite subject at school and I won competitions for my short stories and poetry. I took part in a public speaking competition and I won first place, and then I realised I liked it. This is something I can picture myself doing. I always found the power of the spoken word to be very interesting. So it kind of evolved from all of those aspects coupled with my love of Judge Judy obviously,” laughed Aoife.

“I came across a lot of negativity throughout the process, usually from people who didn’t have any idea about what it actually entailed but you’re going to get that in all aspects of life, people who just want to bring you down. When people would say to me it’s too hard, it’s too far away, it’s already too saturated a profession, you’re not going to make it, it just motivated me to do better and work harder. It feels amazing to have proved the naysayers wrong.

The annual Celtic Games athletics international match involving U18 and U16 teams from Ireland, Scotland and Wales was staged on Saturday in Grangemouth, Scotland. County Louth had two athletes on the Irish team and both enjoyed great success.

Aoibhín McMahon of Blackrock AC was a double winner at U16 level, as she triumphed in both the Shot Putt and Javelin.

In the former she recorded an extremely impressive 14.26m, which is a new Celtic Games best performance, while in the latter she had a fine throw of 41.58m.

European U18 Championships and will still be in the U18 age group next year, won the U18 200m with his fastest ever time of 22.13, albeit with the wind speed marginally over the permitted limit for non-wind assisted performances.

Later in the day he was part of the Irish 4x100m team that sped to victory ahead of Scotland and Wales in a time of 42.11.

Two coaches from the county also accompanied the Irish team to Scotland – Kathleen McConnell of St Pe-

ter’s AC and Deirdre McTeggart of Boyne AC. McConnell has vast experience as a coach with Irish Celtic Games teams but it was the first time that McTeggart has been honoured by being called upon to be a coach at this level.

Breathnach welcomes school opening Fianna Fáil TD for Louth Declan Breathnach has welcomed news that Coláiste Chú Chulainn will be ready for hand-over in time for the new school year in September.

“While some of the building project is not yet complete, I

have been told that the remaining portion will come on stream slightly later in Autumn,” he stated.

“It had been feared that the new school building would not be ready for opening in September, but I welcome the

news that it has been confirmed to me by the Louth Meath Education & Training Board (LMETB) that the hand-over of most of the project will take place in time to have the school opened in September for the new school year,” he added.

There was a carnival atmosphere in Hyde Park last weekend as resident’s past and present gathered to celebrate the estate’s 80th birthday.

Hyde Park which is located down at the Quay just off Barrack St. was named after Ireland’s first President Douglas Hyde and built in 1938. Events on the day included a special Mass to kick the celebrations off where residents who had passed away over the years were remembered. There was also bouncy castles and face painting to keep the kids entertained as

well as a Barbecue, ice creams, karate display from Kobra Kan and a ceremony to acknowledge achievements of residents and brief history of the street.

Music on the day came from Sean and Susan while Mass was celebrated by Fr Brendan O’Callaghan.

Dolores O’Hagan, from Hyde Park was delighted with how the afternoon went and thanked all the residents for coming together to make the day such a huge success.

“It was a great day and thankfully the sun was shining down on us as well. A lot of work went into putting the

The special guest for the day was Bessie Harvey the oldest former resident who returned to her roots for the party and also Margaret Carr Michael McKenna and his family with Fr Brendan O’Hagan at the Hyde Park celebrations who is the streets oldest current resident. Hyde Park is known for its close knit community and that was definitely on display last weekend as residents old and new came together to enjoy the streets 80th birthday.

Friary girls’ school reunion Two past pupils of the Friary primary school in Dundalk are looking to reconnect with old classmates by holding a reunion in the Windsor Bar on the 1st of September.

Linda Sweeney and Patricia Mullen (nee McKee) are looking for some help in getting their old school pals together for a reunion next month.

Patricia and Linda are inviting all pupils in the girls school who started in 1965-1973 to come along to the Windsor for what promises to be a wonderful evening of reminiscing and laughter.

According to Patricia they have got in contact with a number of girls already from their class but they are eager to get in touch with others they have not been able to contact.

“We have most of the names in the school photograph but we are missing a few and sadly a few of them have passed away. So far we have contacted about 30 ladies from the Friary Girls School (also known as St Malachy’s). Unfortunately, there were a few girls missing on the day of the school photograph so we just want to

get the word out that we are holding a reunion,” explained Patricia.

“There is another photo floating about but we are not sure of its whereabouts so not all ladies are been contacted so we need to put the word out that this reunion is for all pupils who started in the year 1965 -1973.

All are welcome to this wonderful reunion which we have named ‘The Friary Class of 1970’.

“We have a private area booked in the Windsor Bar on September 1 and we will be meeting up at 7pm for food which will be served at 8pm. We have had contact from many ladies already who will be going including one who will be attending all the way from Australia.

“Any ladies that can’t make it we will be sure to raise a glass to you on the evening. There will also be discussions on the night to have masses said in the Friary church for our classmates who are no longer with us,” concluded Patricia.

DkIT musicians feature prominently at Fleadh

DkIT musicians feature prominently at Fleadh Staff, students and graduates of DkIT will feature prominently during Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2018 in Drogheda.

Highlights include Requiem Marbhna, which will take place in The Augustinian Church, Drogheda on Saturday August 18 at 5pm.

DkIT presents a spectacular performance of the highly acclaimed Requiem - Marbhna which was first performed during the 1916-2016 commemorations and broadcast on TG4, Good Friday 2016. This will take place on Saturday 18th August 2018 in The Augustinian Church, Drogheda at 5pm featuring performers and soloists drawn from orchestras, choirs and bands from the Oriel region.

‘Requiem -Marbhna’ which is composed by Odhrán O Casaide in the Irish language, sets out to explore the beauty of sean nós voice, together with chamber choir, orchestra and solo voices, In this work, the musical motifs are carried seamlessly from genre to genre.

The concert will be conducted by renowned US composer and producer, Craig Stuart Garfinkle and will feature Sibéal N Chasaide, whose voice has been described by critics as the voice who stirred a nation. Her

live performance of Mise Eire as part of RTE’s 1916 Centenary concert captured the hearts of audiences in Ireland and globally.

A selection of musicians from DkIT will also participate in the concert, together with performers and soloists from local orchestras, choirs and bands.

The performance represents a celebration of the diversity of musical traditions in Louth in a wonderful collaborative community effort.

A symposium, Ó Ghlúin go Glúin, Drogheda Arts Centre (Friday 17th August, 2-5PM) Celebrating Legacy and Transmission in Irish Traditional Music, takes place on Friday 17 August 2018 in association with the Creative Arts Research Centre at Dundalk Institute of Technology. A range of papers will celebrate and evaluate the legacy of notable musicians who have made a significant contribution to the development of Irish traditional music, very often through their teaching or mentoring of young musicians.

The speakers, including Dr Adèle Commins, Head of Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music at DkIT and recent recipient of a DkIT President’s Prize for Research. The presenters will provide their personal insights, share recordings and perform to illustrate their subjects’ contribution to the tradition and celebrate their legacy. There will be a particular focus on acknowledging and recognising the contribution made by musicians associated with Co Louth but figures from throughout the Irish traditional music world will be celebrated.

With just two weeks to go to the Leinster finals of the Senior Cup at Mount Juliet members of Dundalk’s Senior Cup panel have been staking their claims for places in the quarterfinal against The Island on Saturday week.

Three of the team found themselves in high-level competition over the past week with Caolan Rafferty in action at the Irish Close in The European Club, Eoin Murphy playing for Ireland in the Boys Home Internationals at Royal Dornock in Scotland and Brendan Lawlor featuring in the latest round of the European Disabled Golfers Association Tour in Sweden

Lawlor, who has already won three times on tour this year, produced another super performance to finish second at the Golfstar course in Lindo, just two

shots behind home hero Johan Kammerstad who shot a two round total of 145 for victory.

His performance in Sweden has moved Lawlor up to third in the

EDGA rankings and he remains on target for a top five finish.

Eoin Murphy was part of the Ireland Boys teams that went very close to denying England a three-in-a-row at the Home Internationals in Royal Dornoch last week.

In Ireland’s opening match against Wales Murphy had an impressive 4&3 win over Connor Owen as Ireland romped to a 10-5 victory.

Murphy had played in the morning foursomes with Max Kennedy of Royal Dublin but they were the only Irish pairing to lose as they went down 5&4.

Murphy’s next in-

volvement was in the singles against Scotland on Day Two and he picked up a half-point in Ireland’s 10.5 to 4.5 win over the hosts.

That set up a final day showdown with defending champions England and the match was delicately poised at 3-2 after England narrowly won the morning foursomes.

Murphy faced Harry Goodard who had won his previous two singles matches and the pair were involved in a ding dong battle that went all the way to the final hole. Unfortunately, a bogey five on the final hole saw Goddard claim what proved to be a valuable point in England’s 8-7 win over

Ireland.

Caolan Rafferty suffered a similar fate over the final two holes of his second round tie with Eoin Leonard at the Irish Close in The European Club.

It was a tight match but Rafferty won the 16th to go one up only to lose the 17th and 18th and bow out of the Championships.

There was further disappointment for Rafferty later in the week when the Irish selectors picked Robin Dawson, John Murphy and Colm Purcell for Ireland’s Eisenhower Cup team even though Rafferty has now moved to 62 in the world amateur golf rankings.

Getting Open Hydro workers alternative employment is a priority No stone will be left unturned to find alternative employment for the Open Hydro workers, a local Fine Gael TD has said.

Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick said: “News that Open Hydro in Greenore is to close is sad news and my heart goes out to the workers and their families at this difficult time.

“I have been in contact with my Fine Gael colleagues Minister for Employment Affairs & Social Protection, Regina Doherty and Minister for Business, Enterprise, and Innovation, Heather Humphreys.

“I have been assured that the Government will also make every State support available to the Open Hy-

dro employees. The Government will do its utmost to help these workers transition and find new employment opportunities,” said the Louth TD. “From what I understand the company did not consult with the Government in advance of this advancement. This means there was no opportunity to engage

with its senior management to see whether this decision could have been averted.

“I understand that the staff were very shocked by this sudden news. Let me reassure them that no effort will be spared to help smooth their path into alternative employment.”

As difficult as it may be to appreciate right now, we

have reason to be confident that we will find new investment and new opportunities – for the employees of Open Hydro, for the residents of Louth. The staff at the plant are highly skilled and trained in design and production and that these skills set are readily transferrable to similar companies within the area and wider afield.

Carly returns from Toronto to take part in Rose of Tralee

Louth’s two Roses have both made it to Tralee ahead of this weekend’s ever popular festival which will run until Tuesday evening.

Anne-Marie Duffy will proudly wear the Louth Rose sash while Rathcor native Carly McGrath arrived in Ireland on Monday having been selected to represent Toronto back in June.

Carly was born in Toronto but her family moved back to Rathcor, Cooley when she was just two and is the only one of her siblings to be born in Canada.

Remarkably Carly is the fifth Rose to bloom from the Cooley/North Louth area since 2011 following in the footsteps of Leoina Lennon (Jenkinstown), Patricia Marmion (Cooley), Jenny Hanlon (Cooley) and Megan Ferguson (Cooley).

She has been very active in GAA both in

Ireland with Cooley Kickhams and in Toronto with her local side Durham Robert Emmetts. Carly works in Investor Relations and has a Bachelor of Arts International Honours Degree from the National University of

Maynooth Ireland and University of Vienna Austria. According to the Rathcor native she made the decision to return to Toronto impulsively after graduating and is really enjoying living in such a bustling vibrant city.

Speaking back in June after she was selected to represent Toronto, Carly stated that she was shocked when her name was called out.

“I grew up watching and following the Rose of Tralee festival each and every year. It was something I always said I would love to be a part of.

“This year, I made it one of my goals. I have lived in Toronto four years this October and felt like the time was right.

“I know everybody says this but honestly I was absolutely shocked when my name was called out on selection night. I still am shocked. It happened so fast. I just heard the cheers and the other roses that were on the stage came running towards me. It was an amazing feeling and I have had to watch the videos a few times for it to feel real,” she explained.

Then you’ve no doubt heard about Personal Contract Plans or PCPs. These car finance agreements have been getting a lot of attention – and not always for the right reasons. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) recently released the first public analysis of PCPs in Ireland. The report found that a third of new car purchases in Ireland are now financed by PCP agreements.

In 2016, a significant €805 million was extended to consumers in PCP finance – a considerable increase of 65% on 2015. The CCPC says however that because of the complexity of these agreements, there is a concern that consumers do not fully understand how they work. In particular, they say there is a doubt that consumers are fully aware of the balloon payments at the end of a PCP agreement. chullain Credit Union said “For many, headline rates on PCP agreements can at first look more attractive, but these can easily distract from the range of additional charges and a good deal of inflexibility. Essentially PCPs are lease schemes. The buyer has in effect, hired the car for a particular period of time while they make payments. At the end of the agreement, they will have to make a balloon payment in order to own the car. With a traditional car loan, the person simply borrows the money to pay for a car, which they own immediately. They can also sell the car on at any time they wish, should they need to, whereas they do not have this option with a PCP.” There is further detail in the ‘small print’ of a PCP agreement which consumers should be aware of. They will, for example, need to be conscious of the mileage they are clocking up, because the balloon payment at the end of the agreement will have been calculated with their annual mileage in mind. If on the other hand a consumer takes out a car loan before purchasing a car, they are effectively going as a

cash buyer to the car dealer and are in a far better position to negotiate a deal.
