Two local Louth County councillors are amongst the nominations to contest the Louth Selection Convention for Fine Gael following Thursday evening’s announcement by Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick that he will not be standing in the next election. Over the weekend both Cllr John McGahon and Cllr Maria Doyle publicly stated that they will contest the forthcoming Fine Gael Selection Convention on August 23rd. Cllr McGahon was the first person to throw his hat into the ring when he announced last Friday morning that he would be putting his name forward for selection. On Sunday evening Cllr Maria Doyle

revealed that she too had been nominated and was looking forward to meeting up with party members to state her case for selection. Cllr Maria Doyle admitted that she was surprised to hear Peter Fitzpatrick announce that he would be stepping down and stated that she was honoured to have been nominated to contest the Fine Gael Selection Convention next Thursday (23rd). “First and foremost it came as a bit of a surprise to me that Peter decided not to run again having won the seat twice before but now that he has reached that decision I am ready to give it my all to ensure that we keep that seat in Dundalk.
