The 2019 St Patrick’s Day Parade in Dundalk is in danger of being cancelled following the decision by the Dundalk Chamber of Commerce not to organise it next year.

In a lengthy statement released on Sunday evening the Dundalk Chamber stated that they are not able to commit to organising the event in 2019 as the main organiser, David Minto, has changed roles in his job and no longer is able to help run the parade.

The chamber also

claimed that they have been left to manage the parade without help for the last two years and they called upon the local authority as well as BIDS to step up and take control of the event.

“When the parade was restarted a committee was formed to act as a central point to facilitate all the different stakeholders and to plan and manage the parade.

New memorial for SS Dundalk victims The SS Dundalk centenary committee concluded a busy year’s activities with the unveiling of the SS Dundalk Memorial which took place on Sunday afternoon on the Navvy Bank. The memorial is in memory of all those who perished on the SS Dundalk boat 100 years ago in 1918.

There were 32 people on board the SS Dundalk on that fateful night and twenty people (nineteen men and one woman) perished as the merchant vessel was sunk by a torpedo. Seventeen of those who died were from the Dundalk area. The SS Dundalk committee have arranged a number of events including last months’ ecumenical service in St Patrick’s Cathe-

dral and a final prayer at the Quay outside the Spirit Store at 11:10pm, exactly one hundred years to the moment the ship sunk.

The monument which was unveiled consists of a clockface which is stopped at 11:10 which was the time the ship was sunk. The names of the survivors and those who perished are inscribed in the plinth below the clock.

The ceremony on Sunday was attended by many of the committee including which included Audrey Tuite, Anne Howard, Betty Cleary, Charley McCarthy, Marie Agnew, Kevin O’Neill, Jacinta Kerley, Jim Kerley, Alan Bogan, Brian Walsh, Brendan McQuaid and Damien Higgins.

Also in attendance was Fianna Fail councillor Conor Keelan who is also the current Cathaoirleach of the Dundalk Municipal District. According to Conor he was honoured to have been asked to speak at the ceremony.

“I was priviliged to be asked to speak at today’s very dignified unveiling of a permanent monument on the Navvy Bank which commemorates the sinking of the SS Dundalk. The clockface is fixed at 11.10 the exact time the ship was sunk and both the names of those lost and the survivors are enscribed below. The Committee have been nothing but excellent throughout the course of the Kevin O’Neill, grandson of Captain Hugh O’Neill, at the unveiling on Sunday year,” stated Conor.

For the last two years we have finally reached the stage where the Chamber of Commerce has been left to manage the parade without help.

tion both on the day and after the event have become more and more complex and time-consuming as the event has grown. There is an added difficulty this year as the redevelopment works in Clanbrassil Street will be underway which will require a completely new planning and routing for the parade, if it is even possible to hold a parade.

“The increasing scale of the parade, the challenges inherent in coordinating a large bank of participants, coordinating the public services, road closures, traffic management, safety cover etc have demanded more and more effort each year “It has only been possible for the Chamber of Commerce to manage the parade due to the Trojan efforts of a small team of volunteer

members of the Chamber who have carried this burden in addition to their normal working lives. Unfortunately, the main organisers have changed their roles and will not be in a position to run the event this year.

“We have attempted to raise this issue with the Local Authority, as the body with the greatest reach, and with other parties on many occasions since April 2018 and have had no response despite repeated contacts.

There have been no other participants willing to step up and help or take on some of the roles which are needed to plan and manage an event of this scale.

“The Chamber of Commerce is a not for profit organisation whose role is to act as an advocacy and support group for business

and enterprise in Dundalk and its environs.

It was never the role of the Chamber to act as event managers for public events of this scale. No other Chamber of Commerce in the country runs or manages the St Patricks day parades – or other major public events.

“It is with great regret that we must now publicly announce that Dundalk Chamber of Commerce cannot support, plan, coordinate, manage and clear up after the St Patrick’s Day parade.

“The chamber is more than willing to participate in any committee formed to plan and run the parade and will happily contribute our experience and the knowledge we have gained. We welcome any intervention and will support any initiative to continue

the great work which has been done to date,” concluded the statement.

In response a statement from Louth County Council pointed out that they had contributed to the parade in recent years through the provision of financial support but also opened the door for discussions with the chamber to try and get the matter resolved.

“Louth County Council has contributed to the successful Dundalk St Patrick’s Day parade in many ways over recent years, including through the provision of financial support.

Following a recent letter to the Chief Executive from the president of the Dundalk Chamber of Commerce regarding the 2019 event, the Chief Executive would be happy to host a

round table meeting of interested stakeholders at the council offices, to allow the Chamber of Commerce to raise its concerns and to have them discussed,” read the statement.

Meanwhile, Sinn Féin councillors in Dundalk have written to Louth County Council’s chief executive, Joan Martin, after Dundalk Chamber of Commerce revealed they are no longer willing to be involved in the organisation of the town’s St Patrick’s Day parade next year.

The Sinn Féin Councillor team in Dundalk consisting of Tomás Sharkey, Anne Campbell, Ruairí Ó Murchú, Edel Corrigan and Antóin Watters stated it would be ‘a great shame and to the detriment of the community in Dundalk if there was no event in 2019’.

Gardaí appeal for witnesses Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to a hit and run which occurred in Bridge Street in the early hours of Monday morning. Five people were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital with all five treated for minor injuries. The hit and run took place at approximately 3am. It has been reported that a jeep rear ended a taxi before the owner of the jeep ran off.

Dundalk Gardaí have appealed for witnesses

and if anybody has any information in relation to the hit and run driver they are asked to contact the station at 0429388400.

Meanwhile there was an attempted burglary in the rugby club on Mill St. in the early hours of Tuesday November 6th. Nothing was taken but there was damage to the property as the person in question tried to gain access to the club. Anybody with any information is asked to contact Dundalk Garda Station.

There was also an incident on a building site on the Old Newry Road between Thursday evening 8th

of November and Friday morning 9th November.

When the foreman arrived at the site on Friday morning he noticed that the front gate was open and the lock was missing.

He then went over to the on-site office where he saw that the windows had been smashed in. Having searched the office it was noticed that a black grinder was taken. Any information on this theft should be reported to Dundalk Garda Station.

The pupils of Realt na Mara have responded emphatically to ‘Team Hope’s’ Christmas Shoebox appeal with the school collected a total of 114 boxes for the charity.

The nationwide appeal has been running for over twenty years and was established to organise the distribution of presents to children in poor countries who might otherwise receive no Christmas gift.

“Traditionally the schools and businesses of Dundalk have been fantastic and this year has proved no exception with Realt na Mara typifying the generosity of our local schools with a fantastic reaction to the appeal Last year alone there was 2000 shoeboxes sent from Dundalk alone and it is hoped that number can be beaten this year. operation and the aim is to get the boxes posted out by early November.

When Team Hope ask for donations for the shoeboxes they ask people to think of the four W’s. The first W is ‘Wear’ so they’d be looking for clothing like hats’ socks, underwear, gloves etc. The second W is ‘Write’ so stuff like copybooks, pencils and pens would be great. The third W is for ‘Wash’ so obviously things like soap bars and

flannels would be ideal.

Finally, there is ‘Wow’ and that would be something that would bring a smile to the children’s faces. Something like a cuddly toy or a tube of sweets.

21 Mrs McCrory’s fourth-class pupils coordinated the collection in the school going around all the classrooms collecting donations before putting them in shoeboxes. Acccording to Ciara Lavery who was a member of the

organising committee explained that the boxes will be sent to some of the poorest countries in the world.

“We enjoyed collecting the donations and putting them into shoeboxes as we know that they are going to make some of the poorest children in the world very happy for Christmas.

They have no money to get presents so it’s nice that we can send them stuff to make them smile,” stated Ciara.

Dundalk FC clean up at the PFAI awards

It was another good night for Dundalk FC at the annual PFAI Awards ceremony in Dublin on Friday evening with Michael Duffy, Stephen Kenny and Jamie McGrath all picking up trophies for their outstanding season.

Derry winger Michael Duffy beat teammates Chris Shields and Patrick Hoban to pick up the coveted player of the year award for his outstanding performances throughout a memorable season for Dundalk. The 24-year old signed from Celtic in January 2017 and has established himself as one of the best players in the league during his time at the club. Duffy scored 13 goals and provided 25 assists during the 2018 season and has attracted the attention of Ireland manager Martin O’Neil who described the Derry man as an ‘exceptional talent’.

was rewarded for a consistent season as he was named the PFAI Young Player of the Year. The 22-year old has become a key player in Stephen Kenny’s side having signed from St Patrick’s Athletic in January 2017.

The Athboy native has made the number 10 shirt his own with a string of excellent performances which helped Dundalk claim a second double in three years.

There was also joy for Dundalk manager

Stephen Kenny who unsurprisingly picked up the gong for best manager at the awards ceremony. Kenny picked up the award for the fifth time in six seasons and used his speech to talk about the continuing plight homeless people face in Ireland.

“Homelessness is becoming a much bigger issue. Unfortunately [there’s] more participants than ever. I think when you talk about real heroes in society, you talk

about Fr [Peter] McVerry and the work that he does.

He calls for the Government to act like this is a national emergency.

“You’re talking about [people living in] hotel rooms. We could come here even three or four years ago and pay €300 or €400 locally for a hotel room. Tonight, for anyone, its 300 quid and if you’re homeless, what chance have you got?

“It used to be people with addictions [but] now it’s normal families who can’t afford their rent. I think it’s a massive issue and the fact that it’s not being treated as a national emergency as Fr McVerry suggested is a big disappointment,” stated the Dundalk manager.

To cap off a wonderful evening for the club a total of six Lilywhite players were named in the PFAI team of the year with Sean Gannon, Sean Hoare, Chris Shields, Robbie Benson, Michael Duffy and Pat Hoban all getting the nod.

Crosscause annual aid donation rally Crosscause are seeking donations this Saturday for an aid convoy which will make its way to the poverty stricken village of Nicoresti in Romania later this month.

Truckers Ciara Tinnelly, Joanne Laverty and Martina McNally will set out on the journey across Europe in convoy with what they hope to be truck loads full of aid for the poor in Nicoresti.

The Crosscause charity was established by dedicated volunteers in 2003 to work with special needs orphans in Nicoresti in Romania. Casa Bridget is a home in the village for 16 special needs young adults formerly resident

in appalling state orphanages.

The residents are thriving under the love and care shown to them by qualified social assistants and also benefit from in-house physiotherapist and nurse. Casa Bridget also has a sensory room and a big play room which helps to keep the residents occupied during the long winters.

As well as this a day centre on the grounds of Casa Bridget provides schooling, hot meals, washing facilities and clothing to 40 local children every day.

Many of these children are neglected and live in poor conditions with little food, very poor hygienic conditions and no education.

Following the success of the coding workshops for Primary School in October 2017, St Vincent’s TY students once again hosted coding workshops during EU Code Week 2018.

Transition year students welcomed 300 5th and 6th class students from Realt na Mara, Kilkerley NS, Knockbridge NS, Rampark NS, Faughart CNS, Muchgrange NS and St Malachy’s GNS. These students learned the basics of scratch, coding with Sphero, how to programme a BBC microbit and completed a mini physical computing project. The winner will be picked from four regional finalists, from Leinster, Munster, Connacht and Ulster and will each receive a €215 Specsavers eyecare voucher, a bottle of Champagne and an awards final certificate.

Rotary Challenge Award Caoimhe McCormick of St Louis Secondary School was the overall winner of the first round of the annual Youth Leadership Rotary Challenge Awards presented on November 5 in Ballymascanlon Hotel.

Caoimhe competed against other very talented student leaders from eight Secondary Schools in the area to become one of a small number of students to go forward to the Regional Finals in Banbridge on November 20. Should Caoimhe be successful there she will get the opportunity to compete for a place on the Euroscola in Strasbourg.

Caoimhe joins a line of very successful St Louis girls in this competition over the years.

St Louis won this award in 2017, and Annie McAleer in 2015 won the overall competition and went to Strasbourg to represent Ireland.

Over 90 schools visit DkIT open day Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) opened its doors to more than 2,000 prospective students and their families as part of its two-day open day celebrations.

More than 90 schools from across the North Leinster-South Ulster region visited the campus to get a taster of what undergraduate life is like at DkIT with opportunities to meet with lecturers, speak to current students and explore the latest facilities and equipment in use across the Campus.

DkIT’s Falkner Hall was transformed into an exhibition hall for DkIT’s eclectic range of courses, from applied music to applied bioscience, early childhood studies to agriculture, mechanical engineering to accounting, sports and digital marketing. Visitors had the opportunity to take part in Q&A sessions with DkIT student ambassadors and lecturers to help them with their CAO choices.

ticipating schools which included a welcome address by DkIT President, Dr. Michael Mulvey and VP for Academic Affairs and Registrar, Dr. Sheila Flanagan. The primary focus of the session was on Skills for the Future workplace and included presentations from employers in the region including Paycheck Plus, Tekenable and Prometric. Guidance Counsellors heard from DkIT’s work-placement students who spoke about how experience in the workplace has enhanced their learning and enabled them to develop job-ready skills.

A No-uniform day was held in ACS on Friday October 26, organised by the Student Council led by chairperson, Fionn O’Reilly. The Student Council representatives decided to hold a fundraiser in aid of Ardee Hospice. A former student is undergoing treatment at the moment and the family involved are receiving great help and support from the Hospice.

All students were pleased to be able to leave their uniforms at home. They paid €2 each for the privilege and a total of €1,600 was raised on the day.

Christine McSorley said, “We are delighted to be part of a nationwide campaign to promote the importance of postsecondary education. There are lots of options out there and College Awareness Week encourages people of all ages to consider further education as part of their future.”

CAW aims to inspire and inform all students about the importance of having a post-

secondary education plan.

It advocates for students to have the choice to pursue the course best suited to their interests, abilities and dreams, whether that is a PLC qualification, an apprenticeship or a university degree.

CAW is supported by the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals and the Institute of Guidance Counsellors. Many other or-

ganisations such as The National Parents Council PostPrimary, the Irish Union of Second Level Students and Irish Business Employers Confederation have backed the campaign.

The inaugural CAW in 2014, the first of its kind in Ireland, was a runaway success with over 350 events in locations including schools, higher educational institutes,

community centres and libraries. Last year’s campaign saw over 1,200 events and approximately 125,000 participants. CAW 2018 is expected to bring even more participants on board, with events from Malin Head to Mizen Head and a strong focus on communities where participation in Higher Education remains below average.

Cuchulainn riders to the fore in Belfast Sunday saw the eighth and final round of the Ulster Cyclocross League taking place in Ormeau Park in Belfast. With only the best seven rounds counting towards the overall score, the Cuchulainn riders were all keen to gain maximum points.

Conditions were challenging to say the least, with an abundance of mud. Additionally the course was very technical with lots of mud, steep drops and tree roots for the riders to contend with.

Rhiannon Dolan took a fine 5th place in the Under 12 Girl’s race a result that moved her up to third overall in the final standings. A number of riders managed to secure top 10 finishes including Rowan Whelan and Alaoise Duffy in the Girls Under 10 event, where Nessa McCrystal also raced, and Ffion Dolan and Holly McCaffrey in the Under 12 Girl’s Race. Andrea Rogers and Kacie O’Donoghue also raced the under 12 girls.

The O’Shaughnessy twins, Cilian and Conor raced in the under 14 boys alongside club mate Eoin Holmes. Meanwhile cousin Ellie O’Shaughnessy was racing in the under 14 girls and battled bravely to finish in sixth.

The under 12 boys had another set of O’Shaughnessys racing, but Oliver and Tiernan are neither twins nor relations. They were part of the seven-strong Cuchulainn Team in the event, alongside Callum McCaffrey, Aron Doogan, Dylan Haughyey, Bailey O`Donoghue and Tiernan McCann.

The under 10 boys had Shane Meegan, Michael O’Rourke and Ryan Doogan, with Robyn Whelan being the sole club representative in the under 8 girls.

Overall the League was a resounding success and Cuchulainn were the best represented club with a total of 35 riders taking part in the league.

Volunteers needed for first responder scheme A new Community Linked Cardiac first responder CFR scheme is being set up in Ardee area and volunteers are currently being sought.

The aim is that within the shortest time possible a local volunteer Cardiac First Responder CFR with a defibrillator will be at the side of someone in the Ardee area who has called 999/112 with symptoms of choking, stroke, chest pains or cardiac arrest. The local CFR is alerted at the same time as the ambulance is dis-

patched by ambulance control.

In many medical emergencies people can die within the first few minutes. We also know that, if certain simple but critical interventions can be performed within those first few minutes, life can be saved and disability reduced.

This is especially true for strokes, heart attacks, and choking that have caused someone to lose consciousness. The possibility of reviving someone suffering from cardiac arrest reduces by 10%/ minute.

Ten minutes of your time in a year could save a life. Just being there keeping them company until the ambulance arrives is a comfort.

A CFR first responder is a “local”, trained volunteer who when on duty is equipped with a defibrillator in a backpack and a National Ambulance Service NAS dedicated phone.

An on duty volunteer should be called only to cases of cardiac arrest, choking, stroke or chest pain. All people who can call 999

Young Irelands’ host white collar boxing

Dundalk Young Ireland’s GFC and the Dundalk branch of Irish Volunteers for Lourdes were delighted with the success of their White Collar Boxing event held in the Carnbeg Hotel on Friday night last.

Fourteen top class bouts took place on the night to a packed audience raising funds for both

groups. Some of the bouts were exceptionally close with split decisions.

Lions Club Annual Poker Classic

Dundalk Lions Club will be holding their Annual Poker Classic in the Lisdoo Arms, Newry Road, Dundalk on Sunday the 18th of November 2018. This is their 23rd Annual Poker Classic and all the proceeds will go toward the Dundalk Lions Club Christmas Food appeal when they will make up and distribute almost 300 Food Parcels to the needy in our community at a cost of over eleven thousand euro.

On Wednesday 24th of October, Monastery National School, Ardee secured a ‘three in a row’ of Cumann na mBunscol Allianz U13 Corn Mhic Ardail County Louth titles with a victory over St. Mary’s Parish Primary School, Drogheda.

At the other end of the pitch, the Ardee boys’ defence was put under pressure by St. Mary’s throughout the half but some good teamwork and gutsy defending managed to keep St. Mary’s at bay. Keelin Martin and Josh Taaffe controlled the central positions and the constant running of Daniel Commins and Shane Mc Mahon caused great trouble for their opposition.

The second half followed a similar pattern with St. Mary’s again playing some skilful

football but finding it difficult to penetrate the Monastery rear guard.

Monastery’s midfield pairing of Michael Reid and Fionn Coyle worked tirelessly around the middle third allowing Gillespie, Caffrey and Lane to tag on 5 more points. St. Mary’s to their credit kept on battling and were extremely unfortunate not to pull a goal back, when a quick free rattled off the crossbar.

As injury time approached, goalkeeper Brooklyn Gorman make a wonderful save low to his left to thwart the St. Mary’s attack once again. The final attack of the evening

Success for local archers

Andrew Meegan from Inniskeen, who ran the Dublin City Marathon in aid of IALV (Irish Association of Lourdes Volunteers) presenting a cheque to Pilgrimage Director Siobhan Rothwell from IALV, the proceeds from the marathon. Andrew raised €1,585 which will go towards funding assisted pilgrims’ travel to Lourdes in June next year. Included in the photo are volunteers, Beverley Carolan, Eilish Giff, Mary Duff, Seamus Ruddy and Annette Mullen.

Six members of CúChulainn Archers competed in the Irish Open Archery Tournament held in Cork at the beginning of November. The first day was the qualifier, which determines the placings for the head-to-head competition which takes place the following day.

In the Individual competition Christy Banks took the Gold in the Masters Men and Deirdre Rogers took the Gold in the Masters Women. Éamonn Rogers, in the Gold medal head-to-head match in the Men’s Individual ended up in a tied score, which meant that both men would shoot one

arrow into the target, and the one who put the arrow nearest to the centre would win. Both shot their arrows into the middle of the 2cm ring at the centre of the target. This meant that they had to shoot again. This time Éamonn lost out to his opponent, Dublin Archers Mark Sharvin, by millimeters, to take the silver medal instead.

In the Women’s Individual competition Adria Quinn took the silver, with CúChulainn’s Christina O’Sullivan and Deirdre Rogers meeting in the head-tohead, with Deirdre going on to be knocked out in turn in the semi finals, to finish fourth.

Claudia Heinze took silver in the Women’s Individual Barebow competition.

The Team events were next up, and in the Masters Mixed Doubles, Christy and Deirdre took Gold.

In the Senior Mixed Doubles, Adria and Éamonn took bronze, having tied the final score with the team from NUIG. As both teams shot the same score, another one arrow shoot off took place which team CúChulainn lost by less than half a centimetre.

In the Senior Women’s Team event, Christina, Adria and Deirdre took gold.

Dunleer TT awards night The Dunleer Tidy Towns Awards night will take place in the Grove Dunleer at 8pm on Thursday November 15 on this the 40th year of Tidy Towns in Dunleer. Saulius Janavicius (59) of Thomastown Cross, Dundalk, was banned from the road for two years after being convicted of driving without insurance at Dundalk District Court.

The defendant was stopped by Gardai at Anne St on December 12 last year and Judge John Coughlan also imposed a €75 fine.

A woman who admitted driving without insurance while disqualified was given the chance to avoid a prison sentence when her case was adjourned for a Community Service Report.

Winnie Joyce (45) of 48 Clontygora Court, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai at Hoey’s Lane on February 3 this year.

Judge John Coughlan imposed a ten-year disqualification and adjourned the case to March 6 when he would consider 240 hours Community Service in lieu of five months in prison.

Advice on commercial van safety

As we get close to the end of the year, you may be thinking about trading in your current van or opting to purchase a new one. Given that you’re likely to spend a lot of time on the road in your new van, you’ll need to ensure that you’re safe out there.

To help you with this, the AA Van Insurance team has pulled together a few top safety tips to help you ensure your new van is right for you.

In-Cab Safety 1—When driving, visibility is key so before you buy ensure that you have good visibility through all cab windows and mirrors. As well as your own safety, being able to see other motorists, cyclists and pedestrians easily will help reduce your risk of being involved in an incident.

2—Double-check that all mirrors are correctly fitted and, particularly if you’re buying a second-hand van, in good condition.

3—Before you complete the purchase, check that all gauges and warning lights are operating correctly. Particularly if you’re buying second-hand we would recommend having a mechanic with a knowledge of commercial vehicles giving the van a quick once-over.

4—Before you take your new van out onto the road, take a few minutes to check that the safety

Finally, before you drive off in take a few minutes to check that the brakes and steering are operating properly.
