Garda warning to be extra vigilant Gardaí have once again warned people to be extra vigilant during the dark winter months with burglaries on the rise locally at this time of year. Last week there were seven attempted burglaries and Gardaí have warned people to ensure their houses are secure.

A man in his 30s has been arrested and charged following an aggravated burglary at a house in Muirhevnamor last Wednesday (December 5).

Gardaí are currently investigating allegations that a woman in her 40s was assaulted and falsely imprisoned in the house.

Garda warning to be extra vigilant The victim of the attack was taken to Dublin’s Mater Hospital where she was treated for an eye injury.

A male was arrested on December 4 following an attempted burglary on a house in Bellewsbridge Road.

The man was arrested after a thorough investigation which linked the man to the scene of the burglary.

There was also a burglary on December 7 on the Doylesfort Road between 1:45am and 7:20am. A house was entered and a car key was stolen.

The burglar then proceeded to steal the car but it was located about an hour later on the Castletown Road.

Investigations are ongoing.

A burglar was disturbed at approximately 6pm on December 8 in Newtownbalregan. A neighbour noticed flashlights in the house next door and when he went to investi-

gate two intruders immediately fled the scene. Nothing was taken during the incident.

Also on December 8 on the Newry Road between 4pm and 6pm a woman returned to her house to find that it had been ransacked with a number of items of jewellery stolen. Th efollowing day on the Castletown Road another house was ransacked between 3pm and 10:30pm but nothing was taken.

There was one case of dangerous driving reported this week on December 8 at approximately 1:50pm.

The suspect was pursued by Gardaí from Muirhevnamor and the chase continued up to the Ballymac roundabout where the suspect crashed. He then proceeded to jump out of his car to try and flee the scene but was quickly apprehended by Gardaí.

When on scene, the casualty was assessed, treated for a suspected Cardiac event and stabilised for evacuation. Due to the casualties condition and location, an air evacuation was requested.

Via Belfast Coast Guard, Rescue 116 responded and airlifted the casualty to hospital. A total of 14 members responded and stood down at 1458hrs.

The goodwill towards two-year old Zoe Murphy continues to flow with local woman Mandy Stevenson holding a fundraiser at her house on Monday evening.

Mandy invited people down to Manydown Close for the turning on of the Christmas lights at her house.

Two-year old Zoe Murphy was born with quadriplegia and cerebral palsy at 21 months old and as a result suffers with spasticity and restricted movement.

Zoe’s parents Lynda Bannon and Eamonn Murphy were told by doctors that their daughter faced the prospect of being in a wheelchair for

Mandy’s house in Manydown Close is well known for the spectacular display she puts on

each Christmas with colourful lights all over her house and garden. Everybody who attended on Monday evening made a

donation to the Zoe Murphy Appeal which will help pay for a life changing surgery in America at a cost of $100,000.

Ardee CS Transition Year Variety Show

On Saturday the 24th and Sunday the 25th of November 2018, Transition Year students put on their own variety show. They practiced their dances for six weeks leading up to the show with Tracy and Kelly McCluskey from “Showbiz Kids Stage School”, while the students who sang in the show spent their time with vocal coach, Lisa Carpenter.

Many students got to showcase their previously hidden talents, in the form of singing and dancing. The show had two acts and 6 different scenes. The first scene was the “School Medley”. It contained songs and dances all about school and teenage life. One of the songs performed was a “One Way or Another/ Teenage Kicks” mashup performed by Christopher Crawley, Cian Geraghty, Eric Larkin, Oisin Englishby and Evan Duffy.

was the “Love Scene”.

In this scene, we saw many amazing dances and Erin Shevlin take to the stage to preform her solo “Lost Without You”. The last scene in Act One was the “Rock ‘n’ Roll Scene”. This scene was full of energy and had the whole cast come together to perform Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love”.

During the interval,

It contained movements from many different musicals including “The Greatest Showman”, “Hairspray” and “Grease”. We also saw many soloists take to the stage during this

scene including Aoibheann Scanlon who sang “Never Enough” from “The Greatest Showman” and “Good Morning Baltimore” from “Hairspray”, Amy Moynagh who sang “My House” from “Mathilda”, Chloe Donegan who sang “Hopelessly Devoted to You” from “Grease” and Leah Glass who sang “I Dreamed a Dream” from “Les Miserable”.

Forty De La Salle students and their teachers travel to Barcelona

De La Salle students recently travelled to Barcelona with their teachers Mr. McArdle, Mr. McGuinness, Mr. McKeon, Mr. O’Connor and Mr.

McCourt. As part of the wide-range of extra-curricular activities on offer at the College, the 40 students experienced learning, not just outside the

classroom but, outside the country.

On a jam-packed itinerary, the students and their teachers got to visit La Sagrada Familia Cathedral &

Nou Camp Stadium.

They got to visit Monsterrat, the site of Santa Maria de Monsterrat and the Black Madonna. As well as this they also experi-

enced the views of the landscape from the High Cross at Monsterrat. Students also visited the Olympic Park at Mont-Juic and see the amazing

view of Barcelona.

Of course, the trip couldn’t be complete without a trip to Portaventura where students got to experience a thrill on the

rollercoasters on offer, in particular the Shambala which has the 2nd highest drop of any rollercoaster in Europe. On the final day, students got to

see an eventful Basketball game between Barca Lassa and Juventut. Students also got to go shopping on La Rambla before flying home.

St Louis Secondary School’s 6th Year Economics students and their teacher Sinéad Brady have been awarded a trip to the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

The students will get the unique opportunity to experience EU decision making in the form of a multilingual European Youth Parliament.

The event also allows students to get together, debate, take sides, negotiate, amend, vote and finally adopt resolutions on real European issues.

To win the trip, the Eco-

nomics students had to submit a one-minute video on what mattered to them if they were elected as a Member of the European Parliament. The St Louis girls placed a particular focus on the border as this is what is really important to them. Several girls shared their own personal concerns about Brexit and won the judges over with both the content and the slick presentation of their opinions.

Economics teacher Sinéad Brady was delighted with the girls’ success and revealed that

they learned much from the experience.

“The Cocklepickers” unveiling Blackrock

The official unveiling of the new sculpture on the promenade takes place on Saturday December 15 at 11am.

“The Cocklepickers” by local artist Micheál McKeown is the final piece in the trio of high-quality public artworks on Blackrock promenade representing the maritime origins of the village, and complementing the Sundial and “Bradáin” which have been in place since 2000 and 2013 respectively.

The sculpture uses interwoven stainless-steel strips to create a group of two cocklepickers on the beach - a scene which would have been familiar as far back as Medieval times. Cockle picking in the area was especially important during the famine, when

it was the only food source for many local families.

The unveiling will be carried out by Councillor Liam Reilly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, and everybody is invited to come along to witness the latest addition to the promenade.

The project is supported by The LEADER Rural Development Programme 2014-2020 and funded by The Department of Rural and Community Development. It is also supported by SuperValu Fairways and Louth County Council.

Meanwhile, SuperValu Fairways have announced that they will provide significant sponsorship to Blackrock Tidy Towns over the next five years. Part of

the funding will go towards the new “Cocklepickers” sculpture which will be installed on Main Street before the end of the year.

John Horan, chairperson of Blackrock Tidy Towns said “We want to thank Richard Tiernan on behalf of our committee and our volunteers for this most generous funding commitment which will help us enormously with our development and maintenance work in the village on behalf of the community in Blackrock.

Dear Editor, As we are now well into the season of wanton extravagance and waste, we might take a little time out to examine our shopping habits and how they impact negatively on the environment and global warming. Have a look at the amount unnecessary plastic wrapping, other excess packaging, unneeded Christmas presents, the number of battery operated items, the food we don’t consume and the clothes we buy that we don’t need.

An Céilí Mór at the Marist

Over 280 students enjoyed the annual ‘An Céilí Mór’ in St Mary’s College as the tradition that started in 1977 proved very enjoyable once again.

With the retirement of Mr O Náraigh and Mr. Lambe in the Summer it was a big task to carry on the tradition and keep the spirit alive. Roinn na Gaeilge started their preparations over a month ago between ticket sales, dance practice, spot prizes, selfie corner and organising the evening. Beile Sun designed the poster to advertise the event in the school and first year student Dominick Sycha had the winning ticket design this year. This year a new Céilí band also joined us Seamus and Fidelma Bellew and exceeded expectations in keeping the students on the floor all evening.

Mr. Quinn helped students along by calling the dances on the night with Mr. O Náraigh stepping up to the microphone also. During the recess, a group of students gave an excellent display of their talent and Irish dancing

DkIT host music symposium Friday November 23 marked the centenary of women’s suffrage in Ireland, and in honour of the occasion the Department of Creative Arts, Media & Music at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT), in association with Sounding the Feminists and the

Centre for Creative Arts Research, hosted a oneday symposium on women in popular and traditional music in Ireland.

This event brought together scholars and community activists engaged in work to address gender imbalance in both the music industry and

academia.

The symposium had been organised in response to the wider artistic movement in Ireland around the need to better document and to promote the contribution women have made to Ireland’s recent cultural history.

Dee, Clíodhna, Oisín, Megan, Jade and Eoghan gave a display of their tremendous talent which was watched by all on the night.

The hall was decorated to the highest standards by the very creative Art Department along with the Wood work Department which transformed it from a gym to a Christmas wonderland not

forgetting to mention David the caretaker who helped out with decorations and lights.

Mr. Martin organised a visit of the Guinness PRO14 Trophy and the European Rugby Champions Cup trophy which was a great opportunity for students to take a picture with the rugby trophies.

The night ended with Amhráin na bhFiann and many tired students headed home.

In response to an AA lIreland survey of over 5,000 .motorists, 11.7% of respondents ,admitted that they had been yinvolved in either a near miss or la collision after being distracted. .In total, 10.05% admitted to being involved in at least one -near miss, with 0.84% having ,found themselves involved in ba single collision as a result of -passenger distraction.

The survey also found that 0.34% of respondents had been -involved in two collisions because a passenger had distracted them, with 0.47% having been involved e tin three or more distractioncaused incidents.

“We’re coming into a busy time on Irish roads as the combination of poor weather ,conditions, Christmas shopping ,and the holiday party season .leads to more cars on the road at peak hours, as well as many

of us doing more driving outside of the traditional commuting hours than we would normally do.” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “While the motorist must do everything they can to avoid being distracted, we would also encourage passengers to understand the dangers associated with driving and avoid doing anything which could take the driver’s attention off the road. Over the coming weeks many of us will be attending work parties and may be relying on a designated driver or sober colleague to get us home and it’s important, even if you are a little inebriated, that you ensure you are not representing a danger to the driver and ultimately other road users.”

The survey found that in incidents where a driver had been distracted by a passenger leading to either a near miss or a collision, children were found to be the number one culprit.

Of those who admitted to being distracted by a passenger while driving, 46.24% stated that

the passenger at fault was one or more of their children. Almost a quarter of the time (22.35%) it was the spouse or partner or spouse was at fault for causing the distraction.

“Between fighting or playing with siblings in the back seat, sudden illnesses or unexpected bursts of tears, many parents find themselves in a situation where they’re trying to attend to their children while driving and failing to notice how dangerous this is. Even if your eyes are off the road for just a split second you could put yourself or another road user at serious risk so our advice would always be to pull in if the child’s behaviour is distracting you and only continue your journey once everyone has calmed down,” Faughnan added. “While children may not appreciate the dangers of driving, adults certainly should be capable of managing this so just as we are calling on motorists to take additional caution in the weeks ahead, we are also calling on passengers to keep an eye on their own behaviour.”
