A second assault in the space of three days took place on Rampart Lane this week when a 36-year old woman was knocked unconscious between 3am and 4am in the early hours of October 4. The woman was approached by threefour males in dark clothing and assaulted.

She was knocked unconscious during the assault and had her handbag stolen which contained cash and medication.

She was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes

Hospital where she was treated for a dislocated thumb and facial abrasions. Three days earlier a 26-year old male was assaulted at the same location by a number of males and he too was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. operation involving Louth County Council and An Garda Siochana targeting suspected illegal dumping, under Waste Management Acts, Revenue was alerted to a possible illicit oil operation.

As a result, Revenue Officers searched a commercial premises at Millpark, Knockbridge, under warrant, and discovered and dismantled two separate oil laundering operations.

Approximately 5,000 li-

tres of illicit fuel, a lorry, an adapted refrigerated trailer, a van containing barrels of diesel sludge, bleaching agent and various tanks and pumping equipment were seized.

Investigations are on-going.

There were two drug incidents this week recorded

by Dundalk Gardaí. The first incident occurred in Drive 1 Muirhevnamor on October 3rd when Gardaí noticed a man acting suspiciously. The 33-year old male ran when he saw the gardai but was caught and found to have €1000

worth of various tablets on his possession. A file is currently being prepared for the DPP in relation to this incident.

The second incident saw a house in Chapel St raided on the 7th October where cannabis herb and various drug paraphernalia were found in the house.

Meanwhile a 34 year old male was charged with possession of an offensive weapon as well as being intoxicated in a public place when he was found walking up the Avenue Road with a knife in his hand

while intoxicated.

A van which was parked outside Felda was broken into by two males who stole a number of tools including a DeWALT grinder, DeWALT hammer drill, two DeWALT batteries and a Stihl consaw with approximate total value of €1700. Any witnesses to the theft or anybody who has been offered any of these tools to buy are asked to contact Dundalk Garda Station.

Finally, Gardaí in Dundalk have re-issued an appeal for three female passengers who

got into a taxi on Park Street in the early hours of New Year’s Day to contact them.

The three women got into the taxi along Park Street and shared the journey with a fourth woman. Three of the women got out of the taxi on the Avenue Road.

Gardai have asked the three females who got out of the taxi on Avenue Road to contact Dundalk Garda Station at 042 93 88400 or the confidential line on 1800666111 to help them with ongoing enquiries.

The famous Oriel roar was belted out on the Carrick Road on Friday evening as Patrick Hoban’s 26th goal of the season hit the back of the net to spark title celebrations once more for Stephen Kenny’s all conquering side.

Hoban’s goal in stoppage time gave Dundalk the point they needed to secure a 13th league title as the Lilywhites drew 1-1 with St Patrick’s Athletic. As it turned out Cork’s draw with Shamrock Rovers ensured that the result in Oriel was irrelevant but as Stephen Kenny remarked afterwards this was a much more appropriate way to seal the deal in front of a crowd of 3,417.

Hoban’s goal also ensured he broke Richie Towell’s record of 25 in a season and the Galway man will now have his sights on the 29 goals scored by Finn Harps Brendan Bradley in the 74/75 season.

“Even against St Pats on Friday evening we kept on going and it was pleasing to see us trying to play our way in and not just hoof the ball forward. Patrick McEleney showed bravery in taking on his man and playing in Patrick Hoban and it was a fantastic moment when the ball went in and the crowd went crazy.

“The support this year has been great and I have to pay particular

credit to our away support and the lads and lassies in the shed who have driven us on and lifted us when we needed it throughout the season,” stated Stephen.

“We still have a cup final to look forward too and we will still be giving it our all in the remaining league games. We are looking to beat our own goals record from 2015 and I think we need one more goal to do that and we also have our eyes on the points record so we won’t be resting on our laurels. It’s been an amazing period for the club and we want to make sure we can keep these standards up and keep progressing,” concluded the manager.

Jason hosts charity night in aid of St James Hospital

A charity night in aid of St James Hospital will take place in the Lilywhite Lounge this Friday October 12. Local man Jason Thompson is organising the event as a thank you for the brilliant care and support he received when undergoing a cancer battle earlier this year. Thankfully Jason received the all-clear back in May and he wants to show his appreciation for the care he received by holding a charity night in aid of the hospital.

According to Jason there will be plenty going on during the night including an auction for a Dundalk FC jersey which has been signed by the team and manager.

“I was up in St James’ Hospital in Dublin receiving treatment for

cancer for nine or ten months and I have to say the care I received was excellent. I had a Non-Hodgins Lymphonia cancerous growth on the side of my nose and it was a worrying time but thanks to the care I received from St James’ I got the all clear last May. Thankfully we caught it early and everything is ok now.

“I wanted to do something to show my appreciation to the staff in the hospital so I have decided to host a charity night in aid of St James’ Hospital Foundation.

I’ve been working hard putting it together and with the very generous help of businesses all over the town we are ready to go this Friday night. There will be a table quiz, music, light refreshments and spot prizes on the night. We’re also very excited to be holding an auction on the

night for a Dundalk jersey donated by Dundalk FC which has been signed by players and management,” stated Jason.

“We will also be having a couple of raffles for a number of brilliant prizes which have been donated by business all over the town. There are too many of them to mention but I’m thankful to each and every one of them.

I’ve already got word from a lot of people saying they are coming down on the night so it should be a great evening with plenty of craic and music. Everybody is welcome to come down,” concluded Jason.

Tickets for the charity night in the Lilywhite Lounge cost €10 and entry can be paid on the door on the evening. The evening begins on 8:30pm this Friday October 12.

St Vincent’s Wild Atlantic Way trip

St Vincents’s students enjoying the trip to Achill Island St. Vincent’s Transition Year students spent four action packed days in Colaiste Acla on Achill Island recently.

The girls braved the Wild Atlantic Way and storm Ali as they participated in bog-snorkelling, kayaking, cliff jumping, surfing and body-boarding. Alongside these exciting activities the entire group also embraced the challenge of a

25km mountain hike as part of their adventure journey for their Bronze Gaisce Award.

The Gaisce, or President’s Award is a personal development programme for young people aged 15 to 25 to dream big and fulfil their potential.

The hike encouraged the students to step out of their comfort zone and was a positive first step on their Gaisce jour-

ney. Each of the girls will continue to set goals and challenges over the coming months as they pursue the various areas involved in the Award. Trip co-ordinator Edel Smith commended the students on their dedication and good humour throughout the trip, as well as acknowledging the help of the other teachers involved in the endeavour.

RCNE recruiting helpline counsellors

Rape Crisis North East is offering you the opportunity to attend a Helpline Training Programme which will commence on Thursday November 8 and finish on Friday December 14.

The training is free and in return, RCNE will ask you to commit to four hours of your time per week to provide telephone counselling sup-

port to survivors of rape and sexual violence.

The training will take place at Cherrywood Counselling Centre, Great Northern Distillery Offices, Carrick Road, Dundalk. The 12-day workshops take place over six weeks (Thursdays and Fridays 9am to 4pm.

St Louis selected for innovative project St Louis Dundalk has been selected as one of only nine schools nationwide to participate in an innovative new programme.

The Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton T.D., announced the launch of the School Excellence Fund – Step Up Project last week in Athlone.

The project focuses on supporting schools to ‘step up’ in the delivery of the New Junior Cycle programme. Schools will work together and will be supported by the Inspectorate, who will help with planning and the JCT, who will provide additional teacher training.

The School Excellence Fund approach, which focuses on encouraging local collaboration and innovation, is key to delivering on the governments overall ambition to making Ireland’s education and training service the best in Europe by 2026.

Busy time for Sub Aqua Club Search and Recovery training is always ongoing at Dundalk Sub Aqua club. The club have divers who are specifically trained as search and recovery divers and are always ready and willing at any time to respond to calls for help.

On Sunday last a group of club divers were out on an exercise in Carlingford Lough when they got a call for help. The wind had got up suddenly and there was a heavy sea swell. A small fishing boat had broken down in the middle of the lough and was unable to return to shore. There were two children also on board.

The dive boat quickly arrived at the scene. The training and experience of the divers was seen as they attended to the vessel in trouble and safely brought them

25 dives logged before applying for the test. Once awarded this qualifies the diver to lead a dive with a buddy diver to a depth of 30 metres. This qualification is recognised worldwide.

While the club have a number of experienced Coxwains, it continues to train up new members. It is the job of a Diver Coxswain to bring divers safely to the dive site and safely home.Six members recently attended a Coxwain training course and are gaining practical experience on the club boats at every opportunity. A good knowledge of the boat, engine maintenance, rope knots, tides and weather is required before doing the test for qualification.

Dundalk’s largest scout group hosted their annual graduation night on Thursday September 27. Each year youth members who are old enough move on from Beaver section to Cubs, Cubs to Scouts, Scouts to Venturers and Venturers to Rovers. This night is always a highlight of the scouting year, where youth members who have worked hard in their section of scouts for three years get to move to a new challenge, but in recent years the group has outgrown their hall on the Castletown road. Na Gael GFC who offered the use of their hall and facilities, which isn’t the first time the two volunteer groups have been associated together. The Scout hall on Castletown rd. was originally club rooms for the football team.

Over 250 youth members, parents and leaders were present on the night. Awards were presented for the best youth members in each section, and service awards were presented to leaders who have volunteered for 5, 10, 15 and 20 years with the group.

Youth members from 6 years of age to 26 years will be involved in the ambitious camp to Manchester next summer.

St. Patricks Scout Group is the largest scout group in Dundalk with over 150 male and female youth members.

A man who claimed that he was unable to provide a breath sample due to health reasons after being arrested on suspicion of drink driving was banned from the road for four years.

David Durnin (63) of Corital, Kilkerley, Dundalk, stated that he suffered from bronchitis and asthma and because of his “bad lungs” he would never be able to pass a breath test.

He also stated that he was in a distressed state on the night in question and was having suicidal thoughts, but denied trying to frustrate the process of giving a sample.

Garda evidence revealed that he was abusive during the process and didn’t make a proper attempt to complete the sample despite being given four opportunities.

Mr Durnin was observed by Gardai at Anne St on October 17 performing a very slow turning manoeuvre on Anne St before taking off at speed, going through the Crescent roundabout without indicating and continuing at speed on the Carrick Road.

His driving was erratic and he was swerving on the road,

prompting the Garda to activate the lights and siren but it was a further 1.5km before Mr Durnin stopped.

He was arrested and taken to Dundalk Garda Station where he failed to provide a sample.

The investigating Gardai accepted that he had made a mistake in his evidence when stating that the defendant had been charged at 2.43 but the correct time had been 4.15.

During that time an attempt was made to contact a doctor in order to give Mr Durnin the chance to provide a blood or urine sample, and also over concerns about the defendant’s mental health.

Mr Durnin was upset and was having suicidal thoughts. After being initially released, the defendant was immediately rearrested under the Mental Health Act due to Garda concerns.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, asked for the case to be dismissed as his client had been prejudiced on the night.

However, Judge Gerry Jones stated that the Gardai had acted properly during the process and he convicted on the charge of failure/refusal to provide a sample.

Louth County Council WuXi Biologics Ireland Limited intend to apply for permission for development at this site at Mullagharlin and Haynestown townlands, Dundalk, Co. Louth.

The overall site is accessed off the R215 The Southern Link Road and is generally south and east of Mullagharlin Road, north of the Marlbog Road and generally north and west of the Brookfield residential development.

The application seeks amendments to the permitted development (Louth County Council Reg. Ref. 08/822, which has been extended in duration under Reg. Ref. 18/187) and relate to the medium to large scale biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility, referred to as Site 2 in the planning permission.

The area of the overall site subject to amendments in this application is c. 20.74 hectares. The overall GFA of buildings on Site 2 is proposed to reduce from 57,700m2 to 54,232m2.

The proposed amendments comprise: 1. The Manufacturing Facility (DK2) which forms the core of the facility is generally located on the footprint of the existing planning permission and it is proposed to be revised as follows: a. Decrease in GFA from 29,300m2 to 24,391m2 b. Decrease in height from 28m to 25.6m 2. The Warehouse Building (DK3) a. Minor revised building location westerly by c. 3.5m to increase the distance between DK3 and the Manufacturing Facility to accommodate the necessary turning circle for a fire tender b. Increase in GFA from 4,400m2 to 5,971m2 c. Increase in height from 15m to 23.5m d. Reconfiguration of the loading docks to facilitate the necessary turning requirements of trucks.

3. The Central Utilities Building (DK4) – a. Replacement of 2 no. buildings with a single building b. Revised building location southerly by c.

52m to provide for a revised yard arrangement. c. Decrease in GFA from 3000m2 (of the permitted 2 no. buildings) to 1964m2

4. The Administration Building and QC Laboratories (DK1) proposed, replace the previously permitted Admin/Laboratory Buildings (2No) and the previously permitted Restaurant Building. a. Increase in GFA from 15,900m2 to 16,570m2 b. DK1 will have a height of 19m to parapet and 22.5m to top of the plantroom c. The proposed building is connected to the manufacturing building by an atrium which replaces the previously permitted linking corridors. The height to the top of the projecting lift structure is c. 34.6m d. An enclosed yard, delivery and utility area and bicycle store are to be provided north east of the building.

5. For clarity, the Fill/Finish building (DK6) is the same size and height as that permitted under the current permission; 6. New gatehouse building of c. 26m2 7. Revised car parking arrangement and layout (no changes to the quantum of car parking); 8. Revised internal road network and junction arm from roundabout; 9. Consequential minor amendments due to the proposed amendments including ancillary and associated site clearance, site development, roads infrastructure, civil engineering infrastructure including attenuation ponds and ground level changes, utilities infrastructure and landscaping works.

The application relates to development which comprises, or is for the purposes of, an activity requiring an integrated pollution prevention and control licence and waste licence.

The planning application may be inspected, or purchased at a fee not exceeding the reasonable cost of making a copy, at the offices of the planning authority during its public opening hours and that a submission or observation in relation to the application may be made to the authority in writing on payment of the prescribed fee within the period of 5 weeks beginning on the date of receipt by the authority of the application.

WuXi moves ahead with job investment

Leading Chinese biopharmaceutical firm WuXi Biologics (pronounced Wooshie) has announced its intention to seek minor alterations to the planning permission granted to IDA Ireland for a biotechnology campus at the IDA Ireland Dundalk Science and Technology Park.

The proposed WuXi Biologics facility is to be located on a 23-ha site within the 47-ha IDA Ireland Dundalk Science and Technology Park just off the M1 motorway at Junction 17, where planning permission for a biotechnology campus has been in place since 2008.

WuXi Biologics is to seek minor planning amendments to the existing planning permission for its 23-ha site. These amendments involve changes to the layout of the WuXi Biologics site and carpark, alterations to the shape of some of the buildings and a reduction in the number of

buildings to be constructed than originally envisaged. Considering the daily commute of future employees and with a view to creating a sustainable and convenient way for staff to arrive to work, WuXi Biologics is adding cyclist changing, drying and shower facilities to the original plan.

Overall, the WuXi Biologics buildings will be both slightly smaller and lower than the original buildings approved in the IDA Ireland permission, but they will occupy the approximately the same 45,000m² footprint on the ground.

WuXi Biologics is investing €325 million in the new stateof-the-art manufacturing facility which will create 400 high value jobs in the local region over the coming years. It is hoped that permission will be granted in time for siteworks to commence early in 2019 and for construc-

tion work to move ahead some months later, for completion by mid-2020.

Recruitment for the majority of the projected 400 jobs in the new Dundalk facility will begin in 2020, to prepare the facility for production the following year.

In the period ahead, a number of key management and senior positions will be filled. The jobs at the facility will range from manufacturing to technical and quality assurance roles as well as associated administration positions. There will also be significant construction employment opportunities during the two-year development period.

The WuXi Biologics investment is a significant win for Dundalk and Ireland. WuXi Biologics is China’s largest biologics manufacturing company and this is the company’s first manufacturing investment in Europe and only its second outside of China.

Free Medical Screening at Hearing Health Roadshow Medical research around the world supports the assessment that untreated hearing loss is linked to general health and wellness, and can indicate a higher risk of problems with heart health, stroke, diabetes and dementia.

For Hearing Awareness Week this month, a roadshow staged by hearing health specialists, Hidden Hearing, will collaborate with the Irish Heart Foundation and Diabetes Ireland to provide FREE screening for hearing loss, heart health and diabetes.

On Tuesday, 16th October, the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dundalk is the venue for the free health and hearing assessments, while the Hidden Hearing roadshow moves on to the Newpark Hotel in Kilkenny city on Wednesday, 17th October.

The day-long screening events will run between 10.00am and 4.00pm with health specialists available to answer questions and provide vital health checks and procedures, including blood pressure and blood glucose measurement, earwax removal assessments and hearing tests.

Almost two thirds of people over the age of 50 in Ireland have high blood pressure, around 800,000 people, Marese Damery adds, advising that once the problem is identified, it can be effectively managed

Free Blood Glucose Testing Type 2 diabetes is also a growing problem in Ireland, with over 200,000 people already diagnosed and an estimated prevalence of 6.5% of the population.

From yearly screening statistics, Diabetes Ireland suggest this figure may be higher.

“With 60% of our adult population overweight, and many not taking the required daily exercise to reduce their risk, we would question how many people in Ireland have undetected Type 2 diabetes”, Sinéad Powell, Senior Dietitian and Regional Development Officer with Diabetes Ireland, says.

“We are urging people to get screened, as once a person knows they have diabetes they can then begin to manage the condition to avoid longer term complications”, Sinéad Powell explains.

Free Hearing Testing & Earwax Removal Assessments 86% of Hearing Loss Untreated* Over three-quarters of hearing loss in Ireland is untreated too*, for several reasons, with the experts advising that the sooner a problem is identified, the more effective treatment can be.

Hearing can be damaged by prolonged exposure to noisy environments and by infections, although, most commonly, it simply deteriorates with age. In Ireland, 1 in 5 adults suffer from at least a mild hearing problem.

By the age of 55, a quarter of the population report a significant deterioration in their hearing and, by 65, this applies to one third of people. With most people waiting on average 10 years to address their hearing loss, this delay unfortunately impacts significantly on their general health and wellbeing too.

A report by the National Council on the Ageing has shown that people with hearing loss who do not use hearing aids can be

prone to depression, worry, and diminished social activity. Those whose hearing loss is treated report better relationships, improved mood, and more independence.

Of all the senses, hearing fundamentally affects quality of life and has important health and safety implications, according to Hidden Hearing Audiologist & current reigning Audiologist of The Year, Yvonne Doyle.

“Hearing loss is a simple fact of life, as we age. But, hearing facilitates communication and social interaction, supporting relationships and routine activities. It also means we can be alerted to danger and more conscious of it”, Yvonne Doyle explains.

Needing to turn up the TV or radio volume, feeling that people are mumbling more, and having to ask for things to be repeated are the first obvious signs of hearing loss.

Free Walk-In Hearing Testing Countrywide For Hearing Awareness Week, as well as the Dundalk and Kilkenny roadshows, there will be free walk-in hearing tests for anyone who would like screening, all day on Wednesday 17th October at the 75 Hidden Hearing clinics nationwide.

Hidden Hearing is also the sponsor of Ireland’s Campaign for Better Hearing, supported by Daniel and Majella O’Donnell, and designed to educate the public on taking care of their hearing.

The campaign encourages everyone over the age of 50 to book a free hearing test, and the Hidden Hearing “Give Back” programme fits complimentary hearing devices for deserving recipients.

On Saturday night September 29, in Hastings England, Dundalk’s Armand ‘The Crane’ Herczeg became the ICO European K-1 Kickboxing Champion.

He defeated the favourite Nicos Barcos from France in a dominant five-round contest showing his unique blend of skills off to a thunderous packed house.

Armand trains under head coach Darren Sonik from Sanda MMA. They are based down in The Dundalk Combat Academy on Coes Road East.

His next adventure is for the 63kg ISKA K-1 Title on November 17 in Belfast. He will also make his full MMA debut at Cage Legacy 10 in Armand Herczeg celebrates his European win Dublin in December.

Double for Oliver at Dundalk The finals of the various matchplay competitions took place at Dundalk Golf Club over the last few weeks and two out of three wasn’t a bad return for Oliver McGinnity who appeared in three of the finals.

McGinnity took the biggest prize of all, The Gold Medal, when he defeated teenager Conall Murdock in the final and he also captured the Harry Walsh Cup when he beat Joe Garvey on the 19th hole. McGinnity also reached the final of the Minor Matchplay but his hopes of a unique hat-trick were dashed

by Jimmy O’Connor.

O’Connor had a chance to emulate McGinnity’s double as

he qualified along with partner Gerry Campbell for the final of the Foursomes but they came off second best to the defending champions, Paul Morrison and Michael McDermott, who made it a two-in-a-row.

Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition was won by Bobby McCarthy (16) who mastered the windy conditions and returned an excellent score of 42pts which was one better than Austin Carroll (13).

Carroll’s 41pts was good enough to claim Category 2 while Mark Cumiskey (9) took Category 1 with 39pts and Conor Byrne (23) claimed Category 3 with 27pts. Peter Rogers (2) had the best gross score of 36pts and his nett total of 38pts was good enough to take second in Category 1.

5k brings happiness and colour The happiest 5k on the planet took place in Dundalk last month, leaving a trail of bright colours and even brighter grins in its wake.

Twenty young people from Youth Work Ireland Louth, Youth Network for Peace Project planned, organised and implemented this event. The Colour Run took place on the DKIT pitches, from which the 500 runners who participated on the day emerged covered in coloured powder.

After taking part in the colour run, the fun continued beyond the finish line, where runners and supporters were treated to music, bouncy castles, and more coloured powder.

Staying true to their nature of giving back to the community, the young people chose to donate the money which totalled €5,246 raised through registration, raffles, sale of coloured powder etc to Irish Motor Neurone Disease Awareness (IMNDA).

Local cabaret duo The Damewits are taking to the stage once more to try and raise some money for local charities ‘Cara Cancer Care Centre’ and ‘The Maria Goretti Foundation’. The Damewits formed back in the golden days of the Maytime Festival as a reaction to the maledominated acts that were commonplace around that time.

According to Damewits duo Maura Baldwin and Christine Larkin their fun filled show will be resurrected for one night only in the Spirit Store in aid of the above mentioned local charities.

Dundalk Golf Club falls short in bid for glory DUNDALK Golf Club’s bid for All-Ireland glory came up agonisingly short when their senior panel was beaten by Athenry in the final of the AIG Barton Shield at Thurles on Friday.

Athenry won by three holes in a match that was in the balance until the 34th hole of what proved to be an epic encounter. The Galway side were deserving winners on a day when Dundalk’s normally laser-sharp driving deserted them.

Alan McCabe, who is joint manager of the Dundalk senior panel along with John Conlon, said they had no excuses.

Dundalk Young Irelands secured a memorable league and championship double when they lifted the Junior title with a one-point victory over Glyde Rangers on Sunday.

Mark Savage was the scoring hero as his goal early in the second half helped secure a 1-4 to 0-6 win at St Brigid’s Park.

It was a fitting end to a magnificent year for

the Irelanders as they bounced back from the disappointment of being relegated in both league and championship at the end of 2017.

Under the guidance of manager Adrian O’Donoghue, and selectors Kieran Maguire, Packy Maguire and Gary O’Donoghue, they turned in a magnificent season and deservedly booked their return to

The Dundalk side struggled to find their best form in the first half but points from Cian O’Donoghue and Dean Maguire saw them trailing by just 0-3 to 0-2 in a

low-scoring first half. The Young Irelands then took a grip on the game at the start of the second half when Savage’s goal was followed by points from Jordan O’Donoghue and Dermot Mone.

Long Walk Centre encourages recycling

Younger customers at Longwalk Shopping Centre have just been given a very fun reason to recycle their empty clean plastic bottles. The shopping centre has launched a super recycling campaign aimed at children. The centre will have a large cube on the mall into which children are asked to throw their empty plastic bottles with their entry forms inside them. The lucky winner will be contacted on October 25th and will receive an Ipad for themselves and €1000 for their school.

WINTER DRIVING—TOP TIPS FROM THE AA TO STAY SAFE ON THE ROADS

Battery and electrics Winter driving can be more draining on your car battery as you’ll be using your lights, heaters and wipers much more than you would at other times of the year. While this isn’t a major cause of concern if your battery is in good condition, where your car battery is older (on average batteries rarely last longer than 5 years) or you have found your car slow to start on occasion this additional power usage may be too much for your battery to handle.

Replacing one near the end of its life can save a lot of time and inconvenience at the side of the road.

Meanwhile, being energy conscious during your driving can also help your battery. For example, avoid running electrical systems any longer than necessary – turn the heater fan down and switch the heated rear window off once windows are clear.

If you do find your car struggling to start on a cold morning this winter then we recommend that you use the starter in short fivesecond bursts if the engine doesn’t start quickly, leaving thirty seconds between attempts to allow the battery to recover. However, if you have repeat instances of

your car failing to start it’s better to have the battery replaced that continuing to rely on this method.

Antifreeze A continuous squealing noise as soon as the engine is started is a sign the water pump is frozen – it’s the fan belt slipping on the pulley.

The cylinder block could be frozen too. Stop the engine immediately and allow it to thaw out. This may take several days unless the car can be moved to a heated garage.

If the car begins to overheat a few miles from home it’s likely that the radiator has frozen preventing coolant from circulating. Stop straight away to avoid serious damage and allow the radiator to thaw.

Most modern cars use long-life antifreeze – it’s important to use the right type

and avoid mixing different types. Check the handbook or ask a dealer for advice.

Tyres We recommend at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring, and certainly no less than 2mm. While the minimum legal requirement is 1.6mm of thread, during the icy weather we may encounter during the winter having some extra thread of your tyres is vital.

Similarly, if you’ve ever heard the old wives’ tale that reducing your tyre pressure will give you more grip then you’re better off ignoring it. Not only does this not work, it also reduces your car’s stability. Don’t reduce tyre pressures to get more grip – it doesn’t work, and reduces stability.

If you do a lot of driving in higher grounds or we experience harsher weather

conditions, it may be worth considering changing to winter or all season tyres – these have a higher silica content in the tread which prevents it hardening at lower temperatures, and therefore gives better grip in cold wet conditions.

Driving Tips Driving during the winter season can be more challenging than at any other time the year as weather conditions can change drastically over the course of a single day. The combination of changing weather, reduced daylight and the increased risk of fatigue kicking in during the pre and post-work commute unfortunately often leads to an increase in incidents on Irish roads at this time of year. However, a few small changes to your driving behaviour can go a long way towards keeping our roads safe.

Be Alert to the Risk of Fatigue While fatigue is an issue for drivers all year round, the winter season brings with it a heightened risk as we often find ourselves doing most of our driving in darkness. This combined with the additional commitments you may be juggling in the months ahead, such as work parties or Christmas shopping, can lead to

your concentration slipping while you’re behind the wheel. If you find this happening the best option is to pull in somewhere safe and take a 10 to 15 minute break from driving, ideally getting a coffee if you have the option to do so.

Plan your journey in advance During the winter season your car may take a little longer to get started in the morning so plan ahead and get up at least 10 minutes early to give you time to prepare the car. Far too often we all encounter motorists driving around during the winter season with only a small gap cleared in their windscreen – don’t be one of these people. Only begin your commute when the windscreen is fully clear, using a scraper and de-icer if necessary.

Most importantly, remember to prioritise your own safety and that of other road users ahead of punctuality in the months ahead – especially if the weather worsens. During the coming months allow extra time for any journey you are taking, particularly those either early in the morning or late at night, but also accept that you may find yourself running late on a few occasions due to an unexpected delay on the roads. Never drive in

a reckless manner or without adequately clearing your windscreen, windows and mirrors just for the sake of starting your journey a few minutes earlier.

Driving in snow and ice Over the next few weeks and months we’re likely to encounter snow, high winds, heavy rainfall and every kind of weather condition in between. The best advice is to slow down and use gentle manoeuvres when driving to stay safe and to adapt your driving to the weather on the day – for example, stopping distances are 10 times longer in ice and snow.

If you find yourself driving on snowy or ice roads, the remember to use a low gear when driving uphill and leave plenty distance between you and the car in front of you. If driving down a slope then reduce your speed before you reach the hill, use a low gear and try to avoid any sudden braking.

Dress Appropriately No this isn’t about making sure you’re warm in your car, but about making sure that you have the right footwear for driving. During the course of your day, the shoes you wore to work could become wet from

rain or snow, potentially increasing the risk that they could slip off the pedals of your car. Having a pair of flat shoes which you keep in your car and only use for driving could also go a long way towards staying safe on the roads.

Watch out for breakdowns and vulnerable road users While the number of pedestrians and cyclists may drop slightly during the winter months, especially if weather conditions worsen significantly, it’s important that you remain on the lookout for these vulnerable road users while driving and allow extra space when overtaking. For example, during high winds a cyclist of pedestrian could easily be blown off course so exercising additional caution is vital.

Similarly, you are more likely to encounter a broken down car during the course of your driving over the coming months. While there are some things you can do to avoid your own car breaking down, if the road ahead is partially blocked by a breakdown slow down, only overtake when it is safe to do so, and use your hazard warning lights to alert cars behind you to the obstruction.
