Kate secures Texas scholarship

The talented 17-year old enjoyed a stellar year on the track finishing eighth in the Commonwealth Games in Australia for Northern Ireland where she was the youngest competitor to participate.

The St Gerard’s Athletic Club athlete who is in her leaving cert year in St Vincent’s Secondary School currently holds the Irish Senior record in the pentathlon as well as a number of junior and youth records.

Arrested for own safety A man who was arrested for his own safety after being found in a highly intoxicated state was fined €200 at Dundalk District Court. Gavin Maguire (29) of 25 St Helena Park, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to the public order charge at Castle Road on April 26.

Local athlete Kate O’Connor is heading stateside next August having received a scholarship from the University of Texas. The talented 17-year old enjoyed a stellar year on the track finishing eighth in the Commonwealth Games in Australia for Northern Ireland where she was the youngest competitor to participate.

The St Gerard’s Athletic Club athlete who is in her leaving cert year in St Vincent’s Secondary School currently holds the Irish Senior record in the pentathlon as well as a number of junior and youth records including long jump and javelin.

Kate’s father Michael stated that his daughter is delighted with the scholarship offer and can’t wait to get started in Texas.

including UCLA, Kentucky and Penn State but ultimately the facilities and level of coaching in Texas swung it for her.

We travelled to Texas a while ago to see for ourselves what was on offer and I have to say the set up they have over there is unbelievable. One of the coaches over there is called Kendra Harrison and as recently as July she broke the 100m hurdles record at a dia-

mond league meeting in London. To think that an athlete of that standard will be coaching Kate is hard to believe.

“We spoke to Edrick Floreal who is the head coach of the Texas Longhorns track and field team in the university and he is looking forward to bringing Kate over and helping her improve. Kate is currently in training ahead of the indoor season and

apart from her Leaving Cert which of course is her main focus this year she will also have an eye on the European Juniors which take place next summer,” stated Michael.

When asked why she chose Texas, Kate pointed to the facilities and coaches and looked forward to beginning her studies in her new home next August.

“I chose Texas because I found that all the other athletes were extremely warm and welcoming, and the coaches are all of professional standard. The facilities were absolutely amazing and I can really see myself progressing as an athlete and in my studies here,” she explained.

University of Texas coach Matt McGee also expressed excitement with regards to the imminent arrival of Kate.

“We couldn’t’ be happier to be adding Kate to our team as a combined

events athlete. She will help continue the wonderful tradition here at The University of Texas.

She brings truly international level credentials, along with an inspiring energy and character to our team.

“She already holds the Irish national indoor pentathlon record, and her junior heptathlon

best would rank her second all-time in the US. This is most incredible for me, as she is still just beginning to develop in a number of her events.

We very much enjoyed having Kate and her parents, Valerie and Michael, on the Forty Acres and look forward to welcoming Kate back,” noted Matt.

Alcohol and medication were a bad mixture A woman who attempted to bite a Garda after being arrested on a public order charge told Dundalk District Court that her behaviour was influenced by the fact that she had consumed alcohol while on medication.

As a result Angela McDonagh (43), who also used the name Angela McGinley, of No Fixed Abode, appeared at Dundalk District

Court where she pleaded guilty to two public order charges.

The court heard that on September 17 this year Gardai were called to Dundalk Simon Community where the defendant was no longer welcome. After her arrest Ms McDonagh became aggressive and abusive in the patrol car, while she tried to bite a Garda.

On September 19

the Gardai were called to the scene where two highly intoxicated females were having an argument. The defendant refused to leave and continued to be aggressive. She was abusive to Gardai and spat at a Garda on two occasions.

The defence barrister stated that the two incidents happened within days of each other and at a time when things

had got on top of his client. He explained that Ms McDonagh suffered from depression and the mix of medication and alcohol did not go down well.

He added that the mother of three apologised to Gardai and the court for her behaviour.

Judge Gerry Jones ordered the defendant to enter into a peace bond for 12 months.

Local disability activist John Morgan has praised the great work being done by Cork based group ‘Dogs for the Disabled’. John is a passionate supporter of the charity and raised almost €5000 for them earlier this year through a coffee morning and a raffle for a signed jersey.

‘Dogs for the Disabled’ are a group which provide assistance dogs who are specially trained to assist physically disabled children and adults to carry out a range of practical tasks in order to achieve greater independence.

Every dog is trained to help with simple everyday tasks such as opening/closing doors, picking up dropped items, emptying the washing machine, sending for help or even helping a child with severe walking difficulties to walk with greater ease and balance. Each dog is trained to cater for the needs of the specific

client to enable them to live life with greater independence.

Wheelchair bound John has epilepsy and also has paralysis down the left-hand side of his body. He received his very own assistance dog from the charity last week and is over the moon with his new companion.

“I received Jamie last week and he has settled in really well. He’s a beautiful golden Labra-

dor and I’m absolutely delighted to have him.

I live alone and being in a wheelchair means I can sometimes struggle to get things off the ground. My sisters convinced me to get in touch with ‘Dogs for the Disabled’ so I contacted them and pretty quickly they arranged for me to travel to Cork to be assessed.

“I met all the criteria and was told that I was going to be put on a list

for a dog. I didn’t think I would receive it until next year but I got a call last week to say I would be receiving a dog called Jamie and within days he arrived to my house.

“I honestly love having him around the house. It can get lonely living on your own and he’s great company for me. I have no feeling down my left side so he can pick up the remote control for me and help me take off my coat and socks. He will also bring shoes and socks over to me in the morning. They are remarkably intelligent animals and we have already formed a bond,” stated John.

“If I have a fall he has been trained to bark which will hopefully notify neighbours that I’m in trouble. It costs €15000 to raise and train these dogs but the charity give them out for free. It’s a great service and I was only too happy to raise near €5000 for them earlier this year,” added John.

undalk Credit Union have announced a significant expansion of their Community Support Fund that will see an increased number of charitable, voluntary, community and local enterprise organisations receive donations totalling €100,000 in 2018 – their 50th anniversary year. Over 30 organisations that provide hugely valuable and important services to the community across a significant range of activities will benefit from the expansion of the Credit Union’s Community Support Fund, which is the primary vehicle under which donations made by the member-owned, member-controlled Credit Union are facilitated.

Dundalk Credit Union has a proud history of giving back to the community since it was founded 50 years ago in 1968. The importance it has placed on giving back to the community, on behalf of its members, is an integral part of its ethos.

This performance of Requiem-Marbhna in the Irish language, features staff and students from Dundalk Institute of Technology, who will be joined by the Garda Band, Ardee Concert Band, Tredagh Singers, Zoë

Conway and other local soloists and players. The conductor will be Inspector Pat Kenny of the Garda Band and will feature Sibéal Ní Chasaide. Marbhna is composed by Odhrán Ó Casaide, and sets out to explore the beauty of sean nós voice together with orchestra, classical solo voices, traditional and early music instruments.

Man appeared to be intoxicated while fixing puncture

A man who was attempting to fix a puncture at the side of the road and appeared to be intoxicated when approached by Gardai pleaded guilty to a charge of driving without insurance.

Dundalk District Court

heard that on August 7 this year at 3pm Gardai observed a car pulled in on the Ecco Road and Padraig Martin (40) of 33 Pinewood Grove, Bay Estate, Dundalk, was trying to fix a puncture. It was stated by the Garda that

he appeared to be intoxicated and there was no insurance disc on the car.

He stated that he had only bought the car a few weeks previously and had no insurance.

The car was seized and

11 A man who left war-torn Somalia in search of a better life is celebrating after achieving his dream of becoming an Irish citizen.

Nasir Yasin, who is living and working in Dundalk after completing his civil engineering degree in DkIT, travelled to Killarney for the official ceremony where he was one of over 3,000 people from over 120 countries have been conferred with Irish citizenship.

After leaving Somalia in 2005, Nasir was based in Killarney and Wicklow before coming to Dundalk in 2008. Four years later he was granted permission to stay in Ireland on humanitarian grounds and he began his third level studies and graduated in 2017.

Dundalk boxers win 11 gold medals

Local boxers enjoyed a successful night at the Louth Boxing Championships at the Holy Family Boxing Club in Drogheda.

There were 133 bouts over the 3 days, both boys and girls from 11 years to 18 years and a novice section from age 19 up.

Dealgan BC won a total of nine golds while O’Hanlon Park BC picked up two golds, with Sophie Curley from Dealgan winning Best Female Boxer.

Delight for Willow Shane claims his first big success Grove residents

There was delight for residents in Willow Grove on the Carrick Road this week when Louth County Council announced that it’s taking charge of the roads in the estate.

The estate is littered with potholes and the condition of the roads have been worsening each year. Unfortunately for the residents the estate was not in council ownership which meant that nothing could be done to fix the problem as it is technically was a private estate.

Residents have fought for years to try and speed up the process of the council taking ownership of the estate so that they could begin repair work and after many arguments and resident’s protests that process can now finally begin.

The uncertainty as to when the roads would be fixed was the main issue residents had so it was understandable that they were delighted with the news that the local authority had agreed to take in charge the roads in the estate.

Speaking after the announcement, Willow Grove resident Darren Murphy stated that the whole community were very pleased.

“Obviously we are all very happy with the news and we can now begin to try and re-establish a community feel in the estate. It has been a nightmare down here with the state of the roads which were a safety risk to not only the residents but also the likes of postmen and delivery services. There was actually a local taxi firm who had stopped driving

into the estate because of the state of the roads,” explained Darren.

“The residents association down here have done great work to ensure this issue was continuously highlighted and we also want to thank the councillors who raised the issue at meetings over the past number of years. We don’t know exactly when work will begin but we are hopeful it will be in 2019 and we can get the estate back into some sort of order. I’d also like to pay tribute to the likes of Roddy Minogue and Con Nolan who started the fight a few years ago,” added Darren.

Louth County Councillor Maria Doyle who has been supporting the Willow Grove residents by continuously raising the issue at council meetings welcomed the news calling it a significant step in ensuring that the roads will be repaired.

“This is good news for all the residents concerned. It’s been about four years since a vote was taken to ask for the estate to be taking in charge

by Louth County Council so it’s been a long time coming but we have now made progress thanks to pressure from the likes of myself and the residents association in Willow Grove.

“Submissions or objections can be sent into Louth County Council up to the 17th January but this is a significant step forward in ensuring that the roads will be repaired in Willow Grove. I am hopeful that this work will be included in the programme for roads in 2019 and that we are in a position to begin work next year,” added Cllr Doyle.

Cuchulainn Cycling Club hosted a day of cyclo cross racing on Sunday last and it proved to be a very fruitful day.

Despite the terrible weather, there was a huge turn out and some great racing.

The club’s first big success of the day came when Shane Meegan won the under 10s race. In the under 10 girls the club took another two podium spots with Alicia Duffy and Nessa Casey-McCrystal in second and third.

In the girls races Rhiannon Dolan made it two wins in two weeks and again she had her sister Ffionn for company on the podium in third place. Councillors met again on Sunday afternoon and after a lengthy debate and many arguments the budget was finally passed. After a vote the councillors were split on 1414 but chairman Liam Reilly used his casting vote to pass the budget.

The main sticking point for councillors in Dundalk had been the proposal to hike pay parking rates up to €1.20 from €1. After much toing and froing councillors finally

agreed to meet the council half way and rubber stamp a 10c increase which will bring the rate of Pay Parking to €1.10.

Speaking after the meeting Cllr Maria Doyle stated that the meeting had been fractious at times but noted that she along with the majority of councillor were happy that the pay parking rates didn’t increase by 20c.

“It was a very forthright meeting with both councillors and council officials expressing their views. We had rejected the budget twice

before Sunday as we felt that it wasn’t fair and one of the main sticking points was the proposal to hike pay parking rates by 20c.

“It’s been a tough budget to pass and unfortunately we can only look at a tiny portion of it to suggest changes and give our own ideas. Most of it is set in stone by law.

“Unfortunately Louth County Council are near the bottom of the list in the country for rate collection and rent and that has contributed to a severe shortfall in County funds,” stated Maria.

DkIT Applied Music graduate, Martha Guiney from Glen, County Down has been selected alongside four other exceptionally talented young musicians from Northern Ireland (NI) to receive the Young Musicians’ Platform Award by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and BBC Northern Ireland.

Martha plays traditional flute and is a former pupil of Our Lady’s Grammar School, Newry. She graduated from DkIT in 2017 and recently completed a Masters in Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, University of Limerick. As part of the award, Martha will receive £5,000 in funding towards her continued training.

This will allow her to spend a sizeable amount of time learning from a master musician, mentor, teacher or composer either in NI

or abroad.

As well as this training opportunity, Martha will receive two professional radio broadcast engagements, including one with the Ulster Orchestra, between January and December 2019.

Performances at this level raise not only the professional profile of the young musicians but also give a boost to their performance experience.

Highlighting BBC Radio Ulster’s continuing commitment to specialist music and to developing new musical talent, two presenters from the station will mentor the new awardees in helping them prepare for their upcoming performances with the Ulster Orchestra which will be broadcast on BBC Radio Ulster/Foyle. Folk Club presenter, Lynette Fay, will Martha Guiney has been selected for a prestigious award mentor Martha.

Marist students during their trip to France

St. Mary’s College, was honoured with the chance to take part in the UCAPE (Union to promote culture and professional advancement in Europe) meeting in Compiègne, France, which commenced from November 9 to 12.

Commemorating the 100th year since World War I ended, this meeting of schools from all over Europe allowed many cultures to mix and create a charter in order to establish more unity in our world today.

The students stayed with host families which allowed

them the opportunity to learn about the local culture and also to improve their language skills.

The group travelled to Lycée Jean Paul II in Compiègne for the UCAPE ceremony began with presentations from every student delegation about a hero of their choice.

Marist students played their part with a presentation in Irish, French and English about the lives lost on the SS Dundalk and RMS Leinster.

The group also visited the cemeteries for the soldiers who

special services tragically lost their lives fighting in the war.

They then visited trenches in Peronne where they learned about the conditions in trenches and how hard life was for the soldiers back then.

The followoing day a service was held at Eglise Saint Jacques in the Compiègne parish where they celebrated the life of the soldiers lost 100 years since World War I ended for all.

On the final day of the trip the group visited Aeroville shopping centre just outside Paris.

One in eight admit to drink-driving Ahead of the traditional Christmas party season, AA Ireland has warned motorists of the dangers of drink-driving after recent research carried out by the organisation found that over 1 in 8 motorists have driven while over the legal blood-alcohol limit in the past two years.

In response to AN AA Ireland survey of almost 4,000 Irish motorists, 5.69% of respondents stated that within the past two years they had gotten behind of the wheel while over the blood-alcohol limit on one occasion. Meanwhile a further 5.90% admitted to drink-driving on up to 5 occasions, with 1.15% admitting to doing so on more than 5 occasions in the past two years.

The survey found that male drivers were slightly more likely to have driven while over the legal limit in the past two years, with 13.44% of male respondents admitting to doing so on at least one occasion compared to 11.92% of female drivers.

“Drink-driving has long been a scourge on Irish society and while such behaviour has become reprehensible in the eyes of most

of us, there is still a significant minority who are selfishly willing to risk the safety of other road users rather than behaving responsibly,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “We’re coming into a busy time on Irish roads as people attend work parties, family gatherings and try to squeeze in their Christmas shopping so we would urge those who are out at events to plan their journey home in advance and to leave the driving to someone else if you have enjoyed a few drinks.”

“We all deserve to enjoy the holiday season after a busy year but we must all do so responsibly if we are to keep our roads safe.

Struggling to get a taxi or having no public transport option doesn’t mean you have some right to disregard the law and the safety of others just so you can make it home.”

The survey also found that just under a quarter of Irish motorists added between 17 and 24 have driven while over the legal limit in the past two years on at least one occasion, the highest figure of any age group. Meanwhile, those over 65 were the least likely

to have done so according to the survey, with 10.41% of motorists in this age bracket admitting to having driven while over the limit.

“Ultimately, while the number of young drivers admitting to drink-driving was disturbingly high, there is no single age bracket here who can claim to be free of this problematic behaviour and it’s on all of us to do a better job of regulating our own behaviour as well as that of any friends or family who we may be attending events with in the weeks ahead,” Faughnan added. “However, as a nation we also need to reassess the resources and investment we provide Gardaí to allow them to police this behaviour. In the weeks and months ahead, we need to see more Gardaí out and about in all areas of the country, not just urban areas during the day but also in pub car parks late at night.

We know that the number one deterrent of this kind of behaviour is flashing blue lights in the pub car park so we need to ensure Gardaí have the manpower and resources available to carry out these measures.”
