Fitzer set to contest next election
By Paul Byrne
By Paul Byrne
Thursday August 30 was a special day for the young people of Faughart and the Louth and Meath Education and Training Board (LMETB) as Faughart Community National School opened its doors to welcome its pupils for the 2018/2019 academic year. The school has been in decline for a number of years and its very future hung in the balance over concerns regarding the management of the school. Parents withdrew their children from the school last September. The final pupil was removed from the school in September 2017. Following talks between the Department of Education and Skills and the Archbishop of Armagh, Eamon Martin during the summer the Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton, announced that a Community National School would open, under the patronage of LMETB, in time for September on the site of the former Scoil

Fitzer set to run as independent in next general election By Paul Byrne
Fine Gael TD Peter Fitzpatrick is widely tipped to contest the next general election as an independent candidate but has stated that he will make an announcement on his future intentions on September 27 after the Fine Gael Selection convention. Earlier this month Deputy Fitzpatrick shocked many in his party by revealing that he was not going to run for Fine Gael in the next General Election. In his statement he said he would take time with
his family and friends to decide what his future plans would be. “This evening I informed Fine Gael that I will not be seeking a nomination to run as a Fine Gael candidate in the next general election.’ “I would like to thank Fine Gael for their help and support since 2011 and for giving me the opportunity to represent them in the last two general elections. Over the coming weeks, with the help of my family and close friends, I will decide on my future plans at which point
I will issue a full statement,” concluded the statement. Since that statement rumours have been circulating that Fitzpatrick will run as an independent in the next general election but speaking yesterday morning (Tuesday) the former Louth manager refused to confirm that this was the case. “I’m not going to say anything until after the Fine Gael selection convention on September 27. I’ve had a few weeks to speak to my family and friends and I have come to a decision but as I said I
won’t be making any announcements until after the selection convention,” stated Peter. Deputy Fitzpatrick’s decision not to stand has opened the door for a number of Fine Gael councillors to try and fill the void left by his departure. Current TD for Louth, Fergus O’Dowd has already confirmed that he will run again while Louth County Council councillors Maria Doyle, John McGahon, Dolores Minogue and Colm Markey have also thrown their name into the
Peter Fitzpatrick
ring. They will be joined by Meath councillors Sharon Tolan and Paddy Meade.

Dundalk ladies team from 1968 meet with President Higgins The President of Ireland Michael D Higgins was on hand to honour members of the Dundalk FC ladies team who made history in
Wales in May 1968. On that date a number of players from the Dundalk FC ladies team were part of a league of Ireland select side who
took on Corinthian Nomads from Manchester in the first ever international match involving an Irish team. Marie Conway Bing-

ham, Kay Dillon O’Connor, Marie O’Connell Gorham, Margaret Enright Murphy and Paula Gorham all travelled to Tallaght last Friday evening as guests of honour for the ladies world cup qualifier between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. According to Paula Gorham from the Quay in Dundalk, none of the ladies had any idea that they would be meeting the President after the game. “We had an absolute blast in Tallaght and it was a great evening for all of us who went up. We were invited up as VIP guests by the FAI and we have to thanks Frankie Watters who is on the FAI women’s committee for organising the whole thing. We were delighted to be up there and we were surprised when we were asked to come on to the pitch at halftime to be presented to the crowd. We got an even bigger shock a short while later when somebody from the FAI told us that we had been invited to the President’s Suite to meet
Marie Conway Bingham, Kay Dillon O’Connor, Marie O’Connell Gorham, Margaret Enright Murphy and Paula Gorham with President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina
with President Higgins and his wife Sabine,” stated Paula. “I actually used to work in Galway years ago and I used to clean Michael D’s suits so I would see him or his wife quite regularly back then. I reminded him of this on Friday night and we had a good laugh about it. I’d like to thank Frankie Watters for organising the whole thing and as I said before we all had a great time. They were great days for all
of us when we were playing with Dundalk and I was also lucky enough to be capped for Ireland eleven times. I captained my country four times which was a huge honour for me and something that will stay with me forever. Myself and the girls asked the FAI representatives about getting a special cap to commemorate that game back in 1968 and I believe that they are trying to organise something later this
month in Oriel Park at Dundalk’s final league game of the season. Not all the girls made it up to Dublin but we are trying to organise a reunion next month to mark the 50th year of that match. I know a couple have passed away like Geraldine Murphy and Margaret O’Donnell but we are going to put the word out to get as many of that team together as possible,” added Paula.
Having led home the Sunday qualifiers in the recent Captain’s Prize, and got cut as a result, Gregory McCaughey showed on Sunday that he has now adjusted to his new seven handicap when he won the Past Captain’s and Members Stableford competition. McCaughey shot a super round of 43pts over the green course to take his first overall victory of 2018 by two points from Jimmy O’Connor (20) and Terry Conlon (7). It was also a day to remember for 11 handicapper Brian McDonnell who had a hole in one at the fifth as his wedge, from 120 metres off the tee and into the wind, took two hops before rolling into the hole. Brendan Keane (11), Bobby McCarthy (16) and Mark Coan (26) took the category prizes with Cillian Halpenny (20) taking the juvenile
prize. Two members of the club’s Senior Panel, who are currently preparing for the Barton Shield All-Ireland Finals in Thurles in October, also featured among the prizes after excellent rounds. Eoin Murphy (+1) took the Gross Prize with 39pts while Conor Curran (2) was second in Category 1 with 40pts. Another member of the Senior Panel, Caolan Rafferty, has been selected on the Ireland team which will bid for a fifth successive victory at the Home Internationals at Conwy Golf Club, Wales, from September 12 to 14. Last week Caolan was part of a Leinster team that finished third in the Inter-Provincials at Athenry Golf Club and won 4.5pts out of a possible six over the course of the week. The inter-cub juvenile sea-
son finished on a high for the club as our Boys U18, U15 and U13 teams reached three county finals and won two of them recently at Ardee Golf Club. The U18s won the Monarch Trophy for the fourth time in five years and completed an impressive threein-row in the process. They beat Co Louth in the semifinal with Zak Alderdice & Declan Curtin and Michael Staunton & Conor Murphy both winning 2&1 to secure the win. In the final against Ardee, Staunton & Murphy sealed their victory on the 13th but Alderdice & Curtin were beaten the 15th leaving the match delicately poised with Dundalk’s hopes resting on cousins Sean and Joseph Laverty. The U15s claimed their third Seapoint Trophy with wins over Greenore in the semi-final and Co Louth
in the final. The team was Tom Dunne, Christopher Clarke, Cillian Halpenny and James Reilly with Fionn Duffy as the unused sub. It’s been a great year for Cillian Halpenny as he was named Juvenile Golfer of the Year and the end of season awards night last week. The U13s just missed out making it a treble for Dundalk as they went down to Greenore in the final of the McCooey Cassidy Trophy having beaten Co Louth in the semi-final. This was another very young team and there is no doubt that Lee Egan, Cian Spaight, Rory Henry and Eoin Purton as well as the unused subs Ben Cahill and Sean Spaight are ones to watch in the coming years. Wednesday’s Open Singles Stableford was won by Jamie McCaul (18) with 40pts, one better than Niall McCaul (8).

Carlingford can’t be without a tourist office
Sinn Féin Councillor Antóin Watters has sought information from Louth County Council regarding the future of Carlingford’s Tourist Office. The tourist Office in the village closed recently leaving the area with nowhere for tourists to visit for information. Cllr Watters said “Carlingford and the Cooley Peninsula are bustling with visitors and tourists from all over the world who come to see the stunning scenery and to experience the wealth of history in the area going back 800 years. In 2008 we received Europe’s Destination
of Excellence Award and quite deservedly so. We have grown from strength to strength and yet, we no longer have a Tourist Office.” Cllr Watters said “no matter where tourists go, their first port of call is always to the local tourist office to pick up maps and find out where the local areas of interest are or to get information on where to stay etc. It is essential that Carlingford, being a tourist hub for the North East, provides that service. It is unacceptable that we are left without one and this needs to be redressed as soon as possible.”
Eugene Conroy Cup
“Following the abrupt closure of Carlingford Tourist Office, I have received numerous calls from parties who would be interested in leasing the building itself. It is essential that this building, which is in a prime location in Carlingford Village, remains in use and I have no doubt that there are many local businesses and groups who will be interested in leasing it.” “In the meantime I will be contacting the Tourism Board to find out the reasons behind the sudden closure and to ascertain any plans for re-opening it albeit at a different location.”
Last weekend saw patrons of Tom Clarke’s Bar on Quay Street Dundalk play Dundalk Golf Club for the honour of winning the very prestigious Eugene Conroy Memorial Cup. Eugene was a member of Dundalk Golf club for many decades and was also a member and past captain of Tom Clarke’s Golf Society. The competition was won by David Cairns on a count back with an overall score of 37 points and 20 points on the back nine holes. David is pictured here receiving the cup from the current chairman of the society David Cairns receives cup from Peter O’Brien Peter O’Brien.
Castletown Girls’ School enjoy national success Castletown Girls National School will have a brand new plaque on their wall in recognition of their fantastic achievement in winning the English category of the RSA Safe Cross Code Dance Competition. The school beat off stiff competition from all over Ireland as their short video was deemed the best in the country last week. The school won a plaque for their efforts as well as tablets for their classmates and a voucher for their teacher. The 5th class girls under the supervision of teacher Ms McMahon directed and performed the short video which included the girls acting out a short drama about the safe cross code through dance and song. Five schools in the country were shortlisted for the prize back in May which included 30 tablets for the school with two of the final five

from Co. Louth. Knockbridge school were shortlisted alongside Castletown Girls school but it was the girls from town who prevailed much to the delight of principal Marion McNally. “We were thrilled to be shortlisted as one of the five best videos in the country and to win it is just a great achievement for all the girls. It’s not only the girls in 5th class who deserve the plaudits for this award as it really was a school
effort. All classes have been really active in helping to improve road safety awareness and this award is a result of the hard work put in by all our students. “We were neck and neck with a school from Cork all through the competition but we managed to stay ahead and claim the prize. We are very conscious that we are beside a very busy main road so road safety is very important to us here at the school. When the safe cross
dance competition came up we decided to go for it again and created a video which our wonderful teachers helped put together. “The video has got over 5000 views and is available to view on the RSA website as well as YouTube. It’s great for the school and for the pupils who have learnt a lot about road safety,” explained Marion. The video can be watched at https://www. youtube.com/ watch?v= MExYyWbfxPc

Louth vying to secure Ireland’s National Enterprise Town 2018 award Three county Louth towns are hoping to win a prestigious ‘Enterprise Town’ award and possibly be named Ireland’s National Enterprise Town 2018 when they showcase local projects where the community and business have worked together. Flying the flag and hoping to impress the judging panel with their spirit of enterprise in the Bank of Ireland sponsored awards are Dundalk, Blackrock and Dunleer. The judges will get a chance to hear about the efforts made to promote each of the towns before being brought on guided tours of some of their key initiatives. In Dundalk, which was shortlisted in the larger town category, Pat McCormick, President of Dundalk Chamber of Commerce said, “being shortlisted for the award is a recognition of the entrepreneurial drive and spirit that resides in Dundalk.” “It draws attention to what the town has to offer to potential employers, investors and as a place to work and live,” he added. In Blackrock, which was
shortlisted in the medium size town category, Larry Magnier of Blackrock Tidy Towns said, “the community spirit in Blackrock is second to none, and all sectors - voluntary, sporting and business - have always worked together for the benefit of the village as a whole.” In Dunleer, which has the smallest population of the three, Eugene Conlon of the Dunleer Community Development Group said, “we are delighted to have been shortlisted as we feel it is a recognition of the success that has been achieved through community, business and local traders working together to ensure employment and business grow so that as a community we all achieve success.” Thomas McEvoy, Head of Enterprise at Local Enterprise Office Louth said, “The town teams are putting a huge effort into the preparations for the judging on the 29th & 30th August, 2018. This is a great opportunity to showcase the Enterprising Spirit of these towns”. Paula Harmon, Bank of Ireland, Head of County Louth
said; “SMEs, Startups and community organisations are the backbone of the local economy and a significant driver of the country’s success and spirit. Local business owners and community groups want to see their town doing well, and there is nothing like a bit of healthy competition to motivate people to put their best foot forward. I am excited to see some really strong entries from Louth and know they will do the entire county proud. Cllr Liam Reilly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council concluded, “I am delighted that all three centres have been shortlisted, all are unique in their approach to how they operate.” He said they are a mix of urban and rural centres, with Blackrock being a bit of both and, “it is great that Louth County Council have the opportunity to work with all three shortlisted teams, I wish them all the best of luck.”The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at the end of November.

Election hopefuls to address council Louth County Council will today hear from candidates hoping to run in next month’s President election. All candidates who plan on running in the October 26th election require the support of four local authorities or 20 members of An Oireachtas. Prospec-
tive presidential candidates have already addressed a number of local authorities this week including Kerry, Cork, Leitrim, Meath, Wexford and Wicklow in a bid to secure their backing. Former Blackrock resident Sean Gallagher who missed out on securing the
Presidency last time out in 2011 is once again putting his name forward and has already spoke to Leitrim County Council in a bid to garner their support. Amongst those expected to address Louth County Council are Drogheda man Gavin Duffy, who has already received
a nomination from Meath County Council, Joan Freeman, Gemma O’Doherty, Kevin Sharkey, John Groarke and Marie Goretti Moylon. Sean Gallagher has indicated that he will address a number of local authorities but it is unclear if he will be in Louth today.

—this week’s answers—
Gerry Adams has criticised the Minister for Health for allowing a situation to persist in North Louth where 209 children are waiting for an appointment with HSE psychology services which may take up to 33 months The Louth Sinn Féin TD said; “I have been contacted by a number of families from the Dundalk area who have been advised to refer their children to the HSE’s psychology services in Barrack Street. “Yet when they do this they are notified of an appointment date which could be years into the future. “Often this initial appointment is not even with the child but is designed to give parents advice on how they can help their child at home. “I spoke to one mother whose 5 year old child had accidentally seen an inappropriate video game at school. “The child was obviously traumatised, he
couldn’t be left in a room on his own day or night. “That family needed help and advice at that time, but they couldn’t access it. “The response to my parliamentary question indicates that there are 209 children on the waiting list for north Louth, many of them will be in acute need of psychological support. “In the South of the county there are 175 children on the waiting list with a longest wait time of ten months. “Ten months is too long for a vulnerable child to wait for help, but 33 months, almost three years, is an absolute disgrace. “I am also mindful of the stress which those working in this service are experiencing. It is unfair to expect an understaffed and under resourced service to meet demand. Unless more resources are targeted in this direction this government will continue to fail children,” he added.

Historic day for Louth athletics Sunday, August 19, was a historic day for athletics in County Louth as the county’s men’s and women’s track and field teams recorded their best ever performances in the Athletics Ireland National League Final, which, as usual, was staged in Tullamore. The women’s team had qualified for the final of the top-tier Premier Division for the first time ever, taking their place among the top eight teams in the country. On the day they scored a total of 68 points to finish in seventh place. The previous best performance by the Louth women’s team in the Premier Division came back in 2014, when they finished in tenth place overall. The men’s team also performed very well to finish sixth in the Division One final with a total of 78.5 points. In 2014 and 2017 the Louth men had also finished sixth in this final, but with significantly lower points totals – 69 in 2014
Louth Track and Field team in Tullamore
and 68 in 2017 – so this year’s performance can justifiably be regarded as the best ever. The most impressive individual performance on the day came from Emily Rogers (St Peter’s) who finished joint first in the women’s High Jump. Second place finishes were recorded by Karen Costello (Dunleer) in the women’s 3000m and, for the men’s team, by Kieran McGrath (Drogheda & District) in the 800m, Conor Matthews (Dunleer) in the 1500m and
Conor Durnin (St Peter’s) in the Triple Jump. Mary Leech (Drogheda & District) and Eva Cummins (Boyne) also scored strongly for the women’s team, finishing third in the 1500m and 3000m Steeplechase respectively, while Brendan Rogers (St Peter’s) crossed the line in third place in the men’s 3000m Walk. The other athletes on both teams also played their part with some excellent performances and can be very proud of their contribution to the
teams’ success. Seoda Matthews (Dunleer), Shauna McMahon (Blackrock), Katelyn Quinn (Glenmore), Nicola Welsh (Dunleer), Geraldine Finegan (North East Runners), Sharon Olatunde (Dundealgan), Catherine Rogers (St Peter’s), Róisín Coade (Drogheda & District), Rosemary Gibson (North East Runners), Ashling Mathews (North East Runners), Ciara Reilly (Dunleer) and Mary Scanlon (Blackrock) all performed strongly for
the women’s team. The men were well served by Tom Cummins (Boyne), Anthony Dillon (Dunleer), Andrew Kelly (Drogheda & District), Shane Larkin (Drogheda & District), Lee McGuinness (Drogheda & District), Conor McMahon (Ardee & District), Kevin Olandujoye (Dundealgan), Darren Weldon (Ardee & District), Eoghan Smyth (Blackrock), Gabriel Bell (St Peter’s), George Maas (Dundalk St Gerard’s) and Tom McGrane (St Peter’s). McGrane also acted as manager of both the men’s and women’s teams. A noteworthy feature of the Louth teams in the National League Final was their diversity in the sense that they included athletes ranging in age from 15 to 58 from no fewer than ten clubs across the county – a diversity which undoubtedly contributed to their history-making performances at the County Offaly venue.

Story of Ireland’s most famous seanchaí
Jack Healy brings the story of Eamon Kelly to town
Up to the time of his death in 2001, Eamon Kelly was a household name in Ireland, largely through the media of TV and Radio as a member of the RTÉ actors’ group, the Radio Éireann Players and as a Seanachí or ‘old Irish story-teller’. He regaled the nation with all kinds of stories drawn from recollections of
his Kerry childhood and from rural life in general, and as he would say, ‘in my father’s time’. Actor Jack Healy gives a selection of these stories new life in this one man show, placing the work in the context of Kelly’s other persona, that of a carpenter and woodwork teacher. Tickets are €15 and €12

FG councillor welcomes funding for flood relief Fine Gael Councillor Maria Doyle has welcomed the news that the government have committed €83m in funding for flood prevention measures for the county. Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran was in Dundalk last week to make the announcement where he confirmed the breakdown of where the money would be spent. He also confirmed that Louth County Council would be leading the project. Dundalk/Blackrock South will receive the lion’s share of the money with an estimated €40.54 earmarked for projects to provide protection to 1,737 properties when completed. Works will include hard defences such as flood embankments, demountable barriers, rock armour coastal protection, road raising and channel conveyance. Carlingford/Greenore have been allocated €23.41m which will provide protection to 296 properties. Works will include a series of flood embankments, walls and tow pump-

ing stations. Meanwhile Ardee will receive €0.84m which will provide protection to seven properties with work consisting of a series of flood embankments and walls. The remainder of the money will go to Drogheda and Baltray. Fine Gael councillor Maria Doyle was among the local representatives present to welcome Minister Moran to Dundalk last week. Having
witnessed at first hand the many flooding incidents that have destroyed properties and caused devastation to businesses Maria, who invited Minister of State for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief Sean Canney to Dundalk last year to witness at first hand the devastation caused by flooding locally, was delighted that the Government had committed such a
large fund for flood prevention measures. “I was delighted to welcome Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran to Louth County Council last week. He has committed €83m in funding for flood prevention measures for the county and he also confirmed that Louth County Council will be the lead agent in delivering this project which I was especially pleased. “The Minister had a lot of knowledge on the many problems we’ve faced over the last number of years and it was clear that he had been well briefed on the issues faced by many communities in Louth. We had Minister of State for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief in Dundalk last year and I think that didn’t harm our case. Sean met with residents from Mount Hamilton, Blackrock and Carlingford and saw for himself how bad things were. The news that we have an official plan in place is good news for the whole county,” stated Maria.
