By Paul Byrne Dundalk Councillor John McGahon has been selected to contest the next general election in Louth and East Meath by his party Fine Gael in the hope to succeed Peter Fitzpatrick who resigned from the party this week. John was selected at the Fine Gael convention which was held in the Crowne Plaza in Dundalk last week. The convention had been due to take place last month but was postponed following

the announcement from sitting TD Peter Fitzpatrick that he would be stepping down from his party before the next election. It was agreed by party executives to put the convention date back to give prospective candidates time to canvass party members. There were a number of candidates who put their names forward for selection including Dundalk councillors John McGahon and Maria Doyle. Continued on Page 2

The convention took place last Thursday evening with Cllr John McGahon impressing party members with a passionate speech. Ultimately it was

decided that McGahon along with Fergus O’Dowd TD would go forward to contest the next general election for Fine Gael. Meanwhile one of the worst kept secrets in local politics was finally confirmed on Tuesday evening as Peter Fitzpatrick TD confirmed that he has resigned from the Fine Gael party and intends to run in the next election as an independent candidate. In a statement released on Tuesday evening Fitzpatrick stated that he felt isolated within the party and felt now was the right time to leave. “A number of weeks ago I confirmed that I would not be seeking the Fine Gael nomination to stand in the next General Election. I have today informed the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party Chairman,

Martin Heydon, that I have resigned as a member of the party and for the remainder of the current Dail I will represent the constituents of Louth and East Meath as an Independent TD. “I will continue to represent the constituency with the same energy and commitment as before. The decision to resign from Fine Gael was a difficult decision to make. I have given 100% commitment during my time as a member of the party and have always been a team player. I backed the party when some very difficult decisions had to be taken, even when I did not agree with the party I always supported them. “Unfortunately, over the past 15 months I have not been given the same support from Fine Gael as I had given them. My views were not always

listened to and I felt isolated within the party itself. As most people know my Constituency office is one of the busiest in the country, open 5 days a week and accessible to all regardless of party loyalty. After careful consideration and with the help and advice of my family, close friends and constituents I have decided that I would like to continue my career in politics and as a result it is my intention to stand as an independent candidate in the next general election. “If re-elected I will continue to fight for the constituency of Louth and East Meath to ensure that we receive our fair share of resources, jobs and investment. It would be a great honour for me personally to continue to represent the people of Louth and East Meath and as an Independent voice

I feel we can have a stronger voice in the Dail,” concluded the statement. John McGahon is the eldest son of Johnny McGahon and Mary McGahon and a nephew of former Louth TD Brendan McGahon. John was born and raised in Dundalk. He attended Dún Dealgan National School and Dundalk Grammar school. He obtained a BA Honours degree in History & Politics from University College Dublin. Speaking after his selection John stated that he was delighted to have been chosen. “I’m absolutely thrilled to have been selected by Louth Fine Gael members last night to contest the next General Election with Fergus O’Dowd TD. The hard work starts now to hold our second seat,” noted John.

Sadhbh’s Tribe, a local group of fundraisers for Louth/Meath Down Syndrome have raised a staggering €30k for the organisation having completed the gruelling Hell and Back Challenge. Conal Kelleher and Kevin Haughey along with a supporting cast of 65 hardy souls took part in the gruelling Hell and Back challenge which is considered to be Ireland’s toughest mental and physical endurance challenge. The participants completed a 1015km trail route in Bray, Co. Wicklow crossing rivers and lakes, climbing hills and mountains and crawling through bogs and swamps.

The group known also completed the ‘Hell and Back’ course in 2016 when they managed to raise over €17000 for Down Syndrome Louth Meath. According to Conal the battle to keep these services running locally for children with Down Syndrome is a never ending one and that made him determined to help out again this year. Having completed the challenge the Hell and Back crew headed back to Dundalk and enjoyed a well-earned party in the Spirit Store where more money was raised and plenty of fun was had. Speaking on Monday afternoon a tired but delighted Conal revealed that the fundraiser had surpassed the

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth and East Meath Declan Breathnach has welcomed confirmation that a respite service will open on Dublin Road, Dundalk for families in North Louth who have not had access to respite care for their loved ones and who had been left to cope alone. “I have spoken in the Dáil many times on this issue, raising it with the Minister through topical issues and parliamentary questions. We have finally some good news. Following a meeting last Friday morning with the Head of Disability Services for HSE CHO8 which was attended by local political representatives, and parents including the Dundalk Parents & Friends of the Intellectually Disabled organisation, a promise and commitment was made on behalf of the HSE that a respite service would be operational by mid-October. “It has been confirmed to me today that arrangements are now in place to have a respite facility opened by mid-October located at Dublin Road, Dundalk. “It is important to note however, that this is an interim measure to provide a much needed respite service for the families of North Louth from now until Christmas, and that negotiations are on-going regarding getting a permanent solution to the respite crisis going forward. HSE funding available is still way short of service costs and negotiations are on-going to keep the service opened long-term. I will be maintaining pressure on the HSE to follow through on commitments to have a permanent solution put in place for these families.

Launch of Cherrywood Counselling Centre Rape Crisis North East will be launching their new premises ‘Cherrywood Counselling Centre’; located in the iconic building the Great Northern Distillery Offices, Carrickmacross Road, on Monday October 1. Grace McArdle, Manager of Rape Crisis North East said the organisation was extremely fortunate to be able to operate a unique counselling service in such a distinguished and notable building, “The new premises will not only enable us to progress and expand in our specialised field of work, but also facilitate us to see more clients as a result of the additional rooms. The new environment helps convey to our clients, women and men, girls and boys from the age of 12, that this is a place where they can feel

safe, where they can speak freely and speak in confidence. “The new premises are located beside public transport, with parking facilities available. It is also close to essential services like the Garda station and our local hospital. “We are very grateful to have the new offices formally launched by Minister Heather Humphreys, TD and Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation and previously as Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaelteacht,” she stated. St Gerard’s Novena starts on Monday

The St Gerard Majella Novena begins on Monday October 8 and runs for nine days until Tuesday October 16. Rector of St Joseph’s, Fr. Michael Cusack is expecting huge crowds to converge on Dundalk to attend the popular novena in honour of St Gerard Majella in the Redemptorist Church. “This event is now part of the very fabric of life for the people of Dundalk, Newry and the surrounding towns and counties and we all have our reasons to be thankful and our special intentions to pray for. “This community gathering of prayer and worship has inspired and helped many over the generations and has truly stood the test of time. There has been devotion to St Gerard here in this region for over 100 years now.

We always look forward to welcoming people back and indeed welcoming new faces. Free Medical Screening at Hearing Health Roadshow Medical research around the world supports the assessment that untreated hearing loss is linked to general health and wellness, and can indicate a higher risk of problems with heart health, stroke, diabetes and dementia. For Hearing Awareness Week this month, a roadshow staged by hearing health specialists, Hidden Hearing, will collaborate with the Irish Heart Foundation and Diabetes Ireland to provide FREE screening for hearing loss, heart health and diabetes. On Tuesday, 16th October, the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dundalk is the venue for the free health and hearing assessments, while the Hidden Hearing roadshow moves on to the Newpark Hotel in Kilkenny city on Wednesday, 17th October. The day-long screening events will run between 10.00am and 4.00pm with health specialists available to answer questions and provide vital health checks and procedures, including blood pressure and blood glucose measurement, earwax removal assessments and hearing tests. Free Blood Pressure Testing Marese Damery, Health Check Manager for the Irish Heart Foundation, says a blood pressure test can prove to be a life-saver, as high blood pressure is symptomless and a leading cause of heart disease and stroke in Ireland. “The Irish Heart Foundation is delighted to have nurses at Hidden Hearing’s roadshow in Dundalk and Kilkenny to offer free blood pressure and pulse checks and lifestyle advice. These are simple, quick and noninvasive tests that could prove life-saving, and we would encourage people to pop in to us in Kilkenny or Dundalk and avail of our free checks.” Almost two thirds of people over the age of 50 in Ireland have high blood pressure, around 800,000 people, Marese Damery adds, advising that once the problem is identified, it can be effectively managed

through lifestyle changes and possibly medication. Free Blood Glucose Testing Type 2 diabetes is also a growing problem in Ireland, with over 200,000 people already diagnosed and an estimated prevalence of 6.5% of the population. From yearly screening statistics, Diabetes Ireland suggest this figure may be higher. “With 60% of our adult population overweight, and many not taking the required daily exercise to reduce their risk, we would question how many people in Ireland have undetected Type 2 diabetes”, Sinéad Powell, Senior Dietitian and Regional Development Officer with Diabetes Ireland, says. “We are urging people to get screened, as once a person knows they have diabetes they can then begin to manage the condition to avoid longer term complications”, Sinéad Powell explains. Free Hearing Testing & Earwax Removal Assessments 86% of Hearing Loss Untreated* Over three-quarters of hearing loss in Ireland is untreated too*, for several reasons, with the experts advising that the sooner a problem is identified, the more effective treatment can be. Hearing can be damaged by prolonged exposure to noisy environments and by infections, although, most commonly, it simply deteriorates with age. In Ireland, 1 in 5 adults suffer from at least a mild hearing problem. By the age of 55, a quarter of the population report a significant deterioration in their hearing and, by 65, this applies to one third of people. With most people waiting on average 10 years to address their hearing loss, this delay unfortunately impacts significantly on their general health and wellbeing too. A report by the National Council on the Ageing has shown that people with hearing loss who do not use hearing aids can be

prone to depression, worry, and diminished social activity. Those whose hearing loss is treated report better relationships, improved mood, and more independence. Of all the senses, hearing fundamentally affects quality of life and has important health and safety implications, according to Hidden Hearing Audiologist & current reigning Audiologist of The Year, Yvonne Doyle. “Hearing loss is a simple fact of life, as we age. But, hearing facilitates communication and social interaction, supporting relationships and routine activities. It also means we can be alerted to danger and more conscious of it”, Yvonne Doyle explains. Needing to turn up the TV or radio volume, feeling that people are mumbling more, and having to ask for things to be repeated are the first obvious signs of hearing loss. Hidden Hearing is also the sponsor of Ireland’s Campaign for Better Hearing, supported by Daniel and Majella O’Donnell, and designed to educate the public on taking care of their hearing. The campaign encourages everyone over the age of 50 to book a free hearing test, and the Hidden Hearing “Give Back” programme fits complimentary hearing devices for deserving recipients. Council calls on junk food ad curtailment

The TV ‘watershed’ for adverts selling junk food to kids should be extended from 6pm to 9pm, according to a Dundalk councillor who received backing for her motion from councillors at the recent meeting of the local authority. Cllr. Anne Campbell’s motion called on the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) to extend the broadcast watershed from 6pm to 9pm for HFSS (high fat, sugar salt) food and drink advertisements on TV and radio, ‘to protect children from exposure to junk food marketing’. The Sinn Fein councillor said she was very pleased that the motion passed unanimously at the recent meeting and the council will now write to the BAI outlining the call. Cllr. Campbell said: “I believe we need to improve the current rules around TV and radio advertisement of HFSS food by introducing a watershed ban, up to 9pm. More kids actually watch TV between 6pm and 9pm and a 9pm watershed is the established mechanism for protecting children from unsuitable material, both content and advertising when they are most likely to be watching. “Research in Britain, conducted last year, show that the majority, 59%, of food and drink adverts shown during family viewing time were for HFSS products and would be banned from children’s TV. ‘”In one case, they found that children were bombarded with nine junk food adverts in a 30 minute period. “They found that ads for fruit and vegetables made up just over one per cent of food and drink ads shown during family viewing time, while ads for fast food and takeaways appeared more than twice as often as any other type of food and drinks adverts,” stated Cllr Campbell.

Good weekend for Cuchulainn cyclists It was a massive weekend for Dundalk’s Cuchulainn Cycling Club with success on both a national and provincial level, as well as on and off road. First up was another impressive performance from Jimmy Flynn whom successfully defended his Masters 60 National Hill Climb Championships. The race was held on Scalp Mountain in County Donegal and the 5.8km climb had a very unique finish, with the last 1km being up a private concrete road, which hit a gradient of over 20% in places. TSB fundraiser for Autism centre News in Brief

Staff and customers in the TSB Dundalk took part in a fundraiser for the Realt na Mara Autism centre on Friday morning. Staff members held a cake sale and draw as well as a ‘Cycling for Autism’ fundraiser in the bank with all proceeds raised going to help the school raise money for a new playground as well as new equipment for the school on Mill St. On hand to launch the fundraiser was Dundalk FC captain Stephen O’Donnell who also posed for photographs with pupils from the Autism centre. He brought along a signed jersey which was signed by all of the victorious league winning Dundalk FC side.

the Autism unit in Realt na Mara. My son Shay attends the autism unit so I know first hand what a great job they do down there and I know that they are always looking to try and improve their facilities. The money raised today will go towards buying new equipment for the unit as well as a

new playground so with that in mind it is great to see such a big turnout here today in support of our event. We’d like to thank Stephen O’Donnell for coming down to help us launch the fundraiser and everybody who came in to the bank this morning to support us,” stated Angela.

Dundalk Golf Club is making its own Trip to Tipp this week as its senior panel heads to Thurles for the All-Ireland Finals of the Barton Shield. Having won the club’s first ever senior title in July when they captured the Barton Shield Leinster pennant, the senior panel are now looking to make history again by landing a first ever national pennant at senior level. Dundalk’s only previous national men’s golf title was in 2004 when they won the Jimmy Bruen Shield and there is a strong desire around the Blackrock links to add another. But it’s not going to be easy as Dundalk will face Munster champions Kinsale in their semi-

final on Thursday morning and if they come through that assignment they will meet either Clandeboye or Athenry in Friday’s final. Dundalk will select their four players for Thursday’s semifinal from an eight strong panel that includes Irish international and South of Ireland champion Caolan Rafferty as well Aaron Grant, Eoin Murphy, Josh Mackin, Brendan Lawlor, Neal MacKell, Andrew Keenan and Conor Curran. All have been playing well this year and McCabe admits they face some tough decisions. Meanwhile, Colin Roche (7) was an impressive winner of Sunday’s Singles Stableford compe-

tition with a score of 44pts. Shane McGuinness (14), who is having a tremendous year, shot the second best score on the day with 42pts and that was enough to give him Category 2. David Murden (9) took Category 1 on countback after shooting 37pts while Anthony McCrave (22) with 38pts was the Category 3 winner. Christy Ward (7) won last Wednesday’s Open Singles Stableford with a fine score of 41pts which was two better than the inform Eddie Rogers (3) who followed up his win in the Knights of Malta Cup with a super score of 39pts to take Category 1. His gross score of 36pts was also the best on the day.
