Louth Village man Brendan Lawlor will compete alongside some of the best golfers in the world following the news that the Australian All Abilities Championship will run alongside the Australian Open, a tournament which has been won by superstars Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and Lee Westwood in recent years.

Brendan will compete against eleven of the world’s leading golfers with a disability in the Australian

All Abilities Championship with a chance of reaching number one in the rankings if he can go on and win the tournament.

The format is a world-first championship for golfers with a disability as it will be contested during this year’s Emirates Australian Open in Sydney.

Gardaí investigating a hit-and-run which hospitalised three people on Sunday morning have appealed for witnesses to come forward with any information which will help their case.

The hit-and-run occurred on Market Street in Ardee at just around 1:15am on Sunday morning when a silver Vauxhall Vectra went

up on the footpath where it hit two women and a man.

The two females were aged 20 and 21 while the male was 53.

The three victims were left lying on the street in the town as the car sped off. It is believed that there were two people in the car. The 20 year old woman who was from Collon suffered minor

injuries and was released from Our Lady of Lourdes hospital on Sunday evening while the other two victims have also since been released following treatment for non-life threatening injuries including fractures and bruising.

The silver Vauxhall Vectra was later found crashed and abandoned a short dis-

tance away from Ardee.

Gardai subsequently identified the owner of the car through the license plate and are in the process of trying to locate him.

Gardaí investigating the hit and run believe there were two people in the car at the time of the hitand-and run and they also believe they had been in

the pub earlier on in the evening.

Investigating gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have information or dash-cam footage to contact Ardee Garda station on 041-687 1134, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

Brendan who was born with Ellis-Van Creveld Syndrome, a bone growth disorder that leads to shorter limbs, has been a member of the European Disabled Golfers Tour for just under a year and he has made a huge impact already winning tournaments in France, Portugal and Czech Republic to climb up the official world rankings where he currently sits at number three.

According to Louth Village man Brendan, the prospect of lining up to compete with some of the best golfers in the world is one which excites him hugely.

“I head out to play in the tournament in Sydney on November 10th and I honestly can’t wait for it. The fact that the organisers of the Australian Open have decided to run our competition alongside theirs is a huge boost for disability golf.

“I played my first ever EDGA (European Disabled Golf Association) tournament almost exactly a year ago and it’s been a hugely enjoyable experience. I did well in my

first tournament and at that stage I was ranked about 40 in the world.

Then about three months ago I read about this Australian tournament in Sydney and saw that it was open to the top twelve players in the world with a disability.

“I decided to really go for it and try and earn my place and subsequently travelled to play in the Czech Masters, which I won, and the Swedish Open where I came third. Those two results rocketed me up the rankings to number three in the world and unbelievably if I do well in Australia I could potentially become the world number 1 which would be unreal.

“I am a member of Dundalk Golf Club and was part of the successful team which won a Barton Shield this year so that has really helped my confidence,” admitted Brendan.

“You’re playing against high quality guys like Caolan Rafferty and Aaron Grant and when you can compete with players of that quality it really gives you a boost. Caolan is one of the very best amateurs in the country so when you’re competing well against the likes of him it definitely helps your mindset going Brendan with his trophy following victory in Czech Masters. into these tournaments.

Dundalk’s achievements to be recognised

Dundalk FC’s achievements will be recognised by the local authority with a homecoming event for Stephen Kenny’s all conquering side on Monday 5th November. The event will take place at Market Square with music from Who’s Eddie kicking of proceedings at 6pm.

A statement from Dundalk Municipal District confirmed that the team’s achievements would be recognised to give supporters a chance to show their appreciation for the team’s achievements. With the league already wrapped up Dundalk FC will have a chance to complete the double on Sunday when they face Cork in the FAI Cup Final.

DkIT turns pink for Cancer

DkIT turned pink in support of the Irish Cancer Society’s annual Breast Cancer Campaign. The campaign was led by third year students from the BA in Event Management who raised a total of €1,500 via a range of different fundraising activities. The class presented a cheque to Ann McKeown and Brenda McCarthy of The Irish Cancer Society on Wednesday October 23.

The fundraising campaign provided a reallife learning opportunity for the Events Management students who were tasked with planning, promoting and managing the campaign from ideas stage right through to execution. A highlight of the campaign included a ‘pink-themed’ ‘Cups Against Cancer’ coffee morning which

attracted large crowds of staff and students at the college. Other fundraising activities included ‘guess the bra cup size’, ‘take a fun pink selfie’, ‘win great prizes in the balloon pit’, ‘guess how many pink marshmallows are in the jar’ and a ‘bra ping pong competition’. A primary focus of the activities was to generate awareness of the illness and to inform

students and staff about early detection, which plays a major role in the treatment of breast cancer.

The fundraising activities were coordinated

by Maria Roddy-Freyne a lecturer on the BA in Events Management.

Maria is a survivor of breast cancer and has been running these events with the Event Management students

since 2013 after her own diagnosis. This year’s event was even more special as one of the students in the class, Aoife Dowling is also a breast cancer survivor. Since commencing fundraising for Breast Cancer five years ago, the Events Management programme has raised €6140.

Drunk cyclist branded a lunatic in court A man who was cycling on the M1 motorway while drunk was told by Judge John Coughlan that he was a lunatic and would be put in a straight jacket if he repeated the of-

fence.

Bernardas Juodiskis (33) with an address at 24 Atkinson Ave, Portadown, Armagh, pleaded guilty to the offence at Heynestown on June 30 this

year when he appeared at Dundalk District Court.

The defendant was fined €75 on a charge of cycling while intoxicated, while a charge of cycling on the mo-

torway was struck out.

In convicting Judge Coughlan stated: “The next time I will put you in a straight jacket for cycling on the motorway while drunk”.

More rent pressure zones needed: Fitzpatrick Deputy Peter Fitzpatarick has called on the government to declare more rent pressure zones around Dundalk to help alleviate the issue of homlessness. Speaking in the Dáil, Fitzpatrick also spoke on the issue of CPO’s and urged the government to follow Louth County Council’s lead for recovering vacant and derilect properties.

“In terms of housing supply, Louth County Council has had success in the use of compulsory purchase orders, CPOs, for recovering vacant and derelict

properties. This, however, is only the tip of the iceberg. Most of the properties acquired by the council are in the hands of the banks and vulture funds. Nationally, about 1,000 properties are being sold to banks and the Housing Agency for distribution to councils and approved housing bodies.

“I am satisfied that many thousands of these units are not being made available by the banks.

Banks are waiting for values to go up. The Government should target these units. They are already built and could be made

available within a short time.

“The Government must allow local authorities to build on their land banks by providing the approvals for same and covering the land purchase costs which the councils are carrying. Most of these sites are good ones that could be developed very quickly and by refunding the councils the land cost, the Government could stabilise the councils’ financial status. Is the Minister aware that Louth County Council is boarding up a vacant property because it cannot afford to carry out the

necessary work before it relets the property? That is serious,” stated Deputy Fitzpatrick.

“I will now address the issue of homelessness. The Government needs to declare more rent pressure zones. These zones are working in the areas where they have been designated. A new rent pressure zone must be declared as soon as possible in Dundalk.

Rents are increasing at a faster rate than house prices in the area. A large number of properties owned by landlords are being repossessed. The banks appear

“In this time of crisis, we must introduce legislation that removes the vacant possession requirement and allows the recovery and disposal of the property with the tenant unaffected, as happens in commercial property transactions.

More work also needs to be done in providing assistance to those households which struggle to maintain a tenancy, whether

through addiction, mental health issues, disability, behavioural issues or child support issues. The relevant sections of the Health Service Executive and Tusla must assist councils with these cases with a view to ensuring that tenancies are sustained and not lost.

This morning, the Taoiseach asked for solutions.

“I have offered the Minister solutions to increase housing supply and address homelessness. I ask that he listens,” concluded Peter.

Maeve happy with support

Independent councillor Maeve Yore has welcomed cross party and non-party support for her county motion on a pilot housing scheme solution for Louth. According to Cllr Yore it would be advisable to pen a letter to the housing minister to propose a pilot scheme for an affordable housing scheme.

“That Louth County Council write to housing Minister Eoghan Murphy proposing a pilot scheme for Louth between Credit Union Development Associa-

tion (CUDA)/O’Cualann Co-operative Housing Association/Louth Co Council to build affordable/social housing on Louth County Council’s land banks and recoup to Louth Co Council the costs of the land incurred”.

Councillor Yore stated that O’Cualann Co-Operative Housing have a proven track record in building fully integrated sustainable communities at affordable prices and CUDA have been in negotiations with Government over last four years to utilise and offer credit

union monies to local authorities for cheaper and more affordable solutions on housing.

She also noted that it is way past time that FG Housing Minister Murphy acts on solutions like the above motion offered and desists from trying to blame the Local Authorities for the current housing crisis.

Independent Councillor Yore concludes by saying Louth has lead the way nationally on CPO’s and this motion gives Louth the opportunity to lead the way nationally on housing solutions.”

Garry all set for last 16 in Mexico

Local man Garry Hoey along with his Ireland teamamtes will take on Turkey today in the last 16 of the Amputee Soccer World Cup. A clinical 4-1 victory over Ukraine on Tuesday evening ensured Ireland qualified from their group.

Garry has been playing amputee football since 2012 when he joined the Irish Amputee Football Association. He made his International debut against Great Britain in Limerick the following year and has since travelled the world playing with the national team including competing at the World Cup which was also held in Mexico in 2014.

Back in 2009 while at work a car display ramp slipped and fell over, crushing Garry’s foot resulting in him being rushed to hospital where he remained for a month before a decision was made to have his right leg amputated from just below the knee joint.

Since his international debut in 2013 Garry has become one of the most impressive players in the country and he was amongst a select few chosen to represent the

Garry along with his teammates qualified from a tough group which included Mexico, England and Ukraine.

Ireland opened up the tournament with defeat to Mexico and England.

However in a do or die clash with Ukraine Ireland won 4-1 to book their place in the last 16 where they will face European Champions Turkey today. According to Garry the team have improved immeasurably over the last year since the introduction of a national league.

has definitely seen standards improve I feel. We’re playing a lot more games and techniques and fitness are improving with all the lads in the squad.

“The whole set up just has a much more professional feel to it and unlike the last time we are going over to Mexico almost expecting to qualify from our group. It won’t be easy but I feel we’re strong enough to get out of the group probably alongside England who are one of the favourites for the tournament. Then it’s into the knockout stages and after that anything can happen,” added Garry.

Call for action on boy racers Sinn Féin Councillor Antóin Watters has called for a cross border approach to deal with the on-going problem of ‘boy racers’ in the North Louth / South Armagh area.

Cllr Watters said “everyone has the right to go about their daily business without fear and this nuisance is causing fear. I have received numerous complaints from people in the community about this behavior which appears to be pre-planned events by the boy racers.”

Cllr Watters has been liaising closely with his Sinn Féin colleague in the north, Liz Kimmons who this week welcomed a commitment from the PSNI to tackle the scourge on the north side of the border. However, Cllr Watters feels that needs

to be built on.

“It is great that the PSNI have taken a proactive approach in this but the reality is that when these people are stopped racing in that area, they are going to just rearrange to race in North Louth so we need to have a joined up approach in dealing with the issue rather than allow it to move from one jurisdiction to the other.”

Cllr Watters has requested a joint meeting with An Garda Siochaná and the PSNI, together with Cllr Liz Kimmons and it is hoped several issues relating to these boy racers will be addressed.

“When these boy racers congregate there are a number of things that happen; the noise alone is very disruptive to residents in the area and as these are

regular events it has the effect of making people nervous or afraid to leave their homes; the cars are causing an obstruction on the road and other motorists are being forced to try and manoeuver their way through them. I have received a complaint from a female driver in particular who was driving alone and felt very uncomfortable and was quite shaken as she arrived on the scene on her route home. That is not good enough.”

“This is anti-social behavior and an infringement on people just going about their daily business. This behavior is a danger to pedestrians, householders and drivers alike.

We need to all work together to tackle this scourge before it escalates even further and ends up in tragedy.”

St Louis Secondary School’s Open Day Dundalk Leader 1st November 2018

The rain held off which allowed the school to look its best in the autumn sunshine. 50 staff and 100 students spent the afternoon showing off the newly renovated buildings and just what St Louis has to offer to students and their families. Principal Michelle Dolan and Deputy Principal Mary Gilmore were delighted with the turnout.

“It has been an incredibly busy term for us here at St Louis. We managed to stay open last May despite the fire and underwent an enormous renovation over the summer holidays. It was really lovely to be able to show families all of the new rooms and the extensive improvements made to our campus, which will enable us to continue to offer innovative learning to our girls,” said Michelle.

Visitors were greeted by beautiful traditional music in the foyer while upstairs the St Louis Strings and the St Louis Instrumental Group played as they visited the new general purpose space on the top corridor. In the Home Economics Rooms they decorated and enjoyed freshly baked cookies, they created circuits with their bodies and saw experiments in the Science labs, they made bookmarks and clay decorations in the Art Rooms and watched the 3D printer and other exciting tools in the Technology Suite create all sorts of items.

The girls also had the opportunity to work on the Chrome books at the Business stand, try to find artefacts with the History Dept, play Sudoku with some Maths students, and fill in worksheets in Irish, Religion and Spanish. The

TY students had displays on just what a St Louis girl gets to do in Transition Year, and had some of their portfolio work on display for parents to see. They also got to try out the ukuleles and guitars in the Music Room.

The highlight of the tour for many was the new outdoor space created when the old Concert Hall was destroyed. “So many former students who were here with their daughters were thrilled to see what a good use we made of that space,” said Mary Gilmore. “There were lots of memories in that old building and it was sad to see it go, but the new courtyard is a beautiful space right in the heart of our campus which will be a wonderful gathering place for our students for years to come.”

Thousands may not be claiming €1,500 Home Carer Credit - Breathnach

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth and East Meath Declan Breathnach has said thousands of families may be missing out on tax relief of up to €1,500 per year because they are not aware of the Home Carer Tax Credit.

Commenting Deputy Breathnach said that, “Fianna Fáil has consistently highlighted the need for the Home Carer Tax Credit to be increased and we were pleased to secure a further €300 increase in the credit for 2019 in the Budget.

“The Home Carer Tax Credit is designed to help families where one parent works in the home to care for one or more children

or a dependent person. However, it seems to me that many people are not aware of this tax credit and may be missing out. I have regularly called on the Government and the Revenue Commissioners to take steps to improve the awareness of this tax credit. According to the Central Statistics Office, there are currently 146,698 family units where one parent is staying at home to care for children.

“The figure is likely to be higher than this when one factors in those who are caring for a dependent person. According to details published last week from the Department of Finance, only 85,900 families

claim the Home Carer Tax Credit. It is very likely that there are many families out there not benefitting from this credit because they are not aware of it.

“More now needs to be done to increase the uptake of this credit. “I acknowledge that the Revenue Commissioners have done a lot of work in this area and there has been a significant uptake in the credit but this work needs to continue. The Home Care Tax Credit is vital support for working families and we need to do all we can to make sure all those who qualify actually avail of it”, concluded Breathnach.

Steady increase in juvenile cyclists Dundalk’s Cuchulainn Cycling Club recently held their AGM in The Spirit Store to discuss the season past and to outline the future development of the club. Club Chairman Sé Weston in his opening address outlined some of the club’s milestones over the year, in particular the number of female members in the club, which has grown to 20% of it’s almost 400 strong membership.

in Brief Avoided Conviction

A man who stole items valued at €41 was given the chance to avoid a conviction if he made a €300 donation to charity.

Orion McAlinden (19) of 71 Slieve Foy Park, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, admitted taking the items from Penneys.

The Marshes, on July 16 this year. Solicitor Niall Breen stated that the items had been recovered.

Judge John Coughlan accepted €100 and stated that if another €200 was paid by February 20 he would strike the matter out.

Careless Driving

A man who pleaded guilty to careless driving was fined €200 at Dundalk District Court.

Marcis Misins of 22 Williamsons Place, Dundalk, was observed performing a u-turn at Anne St on April 7, 2016.

Exciting week planned for science festival Louth Libraries launched the inaugural Louth Science Festival in Dundalk Library on October 24.

Gareth Kelly from the School of Engineering in DkIT facilitated an exciting workshop on K’NEX bridge building with a class from De La Salle Boys School in Dundalk to coincide with the launch. This workshop examined ‘mega structures’ and the science behind how they are built and what stops them falling down. The boys also got the opportunity to build their own amazing bridge and test the structure to see whose was the strongest.

A Dundalk man who is currently serving a sentence was given a further three-month term when he pleaded guilty to charges of criminal damage and possession of cannabis at Dundalk District Court.

David Cooney (22) of 3 Mooreland Row, Armagh Rd, Dundalk, admitted breaking the window of a car at Manydown Close on February 2 this year.

He pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of drugs on the same date.

Judge Coughlan convicted on the criminal damage charge and took the other into account.

Four-Year Ban

Marian Gongos (26) of 106 Ath Leathan, Racecourse Road, Dundalk, was disqualified for four years after being convicted of driving without insurance at Dundalk District Court. The defendant, who didn’t appear in court, was stopped

by Gardai on October 22 last year at the Ramparts.

Judge John Coughlan was told the defendant had a previous conviction for no insurance, and was also fined €400.

the Gaeltacht who are funding an ambitious collaborative project that connects the research and expertise at DkIT with the musicians of the region.

The first half of the concert features musicians from DkIT, many of whom are studying on the BA (Hons) Applied Music programme. As well as regular performances in the local area, performers and researchers

from the Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music and Creative Arts Research Centre have developed a strong international profile and brought the music of Oriel to audiences globally. DkIT was the first Irish performing group to participate in the International Society for Music Education Conference when it was held in Brazil in 2014, appearing again in Glasgow in 2016,

while members of the DkIT Traditional Music Ensemble performed at Speyfest again during the summer of 2018.

CAOLAN Rafferty produced a fantastic performance in the wind and rain in Scotland last week to win the 14th Fife Tournament on the British Universities & Colleges Tour.

The Dundalk player, who is a Harrington Scholar at Maynooth University, shot a six under par total of 136 to win the 36 hole event at Fairmont, St Andrews, by seven shots. His victory saw him move up to 54 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, his highest position yet.

Rafferty was only player in the field to finish under par and he led Maynooth University to victory in the team event as they beat Durham University by a massive 23 strokes with Stirling a further two strokes back.

The tournament brought Rafferty’s 2018 season to an end and he can look back on very successful campaign which saw him make a major breakthrough by winning the South of Ireland Championship and getting into the top 100 in the World Golf Rankings as well as helping Dundalk to its first ever senior title when winning the Leinster Barton Shield at Mount Wolseley in July.

Dundalk have moved up seven places in the latest Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) survey and are now 22nd out of 40 towns in the country on the list.

Dundalk are once again closing in on their highest ever placing which was 19th back in January 2016 and their latest position represents a big improvement on a year ago when they placed 30th.

The IBAL survey is a biannual report commissioned by An Taisce which carries out litter surveys of our main towns and cities according to international standards.

The towns and cities throughout Ireland are then ranked in a league table format.

The report praised a number of areas around town including Dundalk Grammar School,

Dunnes Stores Car Park, Dundalk Recycle Centre, Dundalk Football Club and Dundalk Town Centre and advised that Dundalk Institute of Technology could be a top-ranking site if it addressed the issue of cigarette butts around the campus.

Fermoy in Cork City was named the cleanest town in the survey while Ballybane in Co. Galway was named the worst.

A Christmas Charity Lunch in Aid of SOSAD will take place on Sunday November 25 in honour of Captain Mark Duffy who died last year when Coast Guard Rescue 116 helicopter crashed off the coast of Co. Mayo.

Dundalk Golf Notes

A birdie on the last hole clinched the House Committee Cup for 11 handicapper Derek Murdock on a beautiful day at Dundalk last Sunday.

Oliver McGinnity, who was in the first group that teed off at 7.15am, had set the early clubhouse with a four under par 68 and was subsequently joined by Tom Clarke (17) and Michael Coburn (9).

McGinnity was well finished when Murdock began his round just before noon and he began the chase earnestly as he took full advantage of the excellent conditions down the front nine which he covered in four under par after back to back birdies at the fifth and sixth and pars at the second, fourth and seventh.

He played to his handicap on the first three holes of the back nine but then dropped shots on the 13th and 14th where he didn’t have shots and ended up bogeying the holes to slip back to two under with four to play.

With the wind at this back he parred the 15th to get back to three under and he was still on the number when he teed off on the last hole. But he managed to get the birdie he needed to leapfrog over the trio on 68 and claim the House Committee Cup with an excellent five-under par 67.

Coburn took Category 1, Clarke won Category 2 and McGinnity was the Category 3 winner while the evergreen Peter Rogers shot the day’s best gross score of 74.

Eoin Murphy went very close to keeping the Irish Varsities title in Dundalk at Rosapenna when he was pipped for the title by one shot by James McVicker of Ulster University.

Playing for DKIT, Murphy jumped eight places in the final round after shooting a superb four under par 67 that included six birdies. He was holding the clubhouse lead when McVicker sank a 10 foot par putt on the last to pip him for the title which was won last year by his Dundalk team-mate Caolan Rafferty.

After opening the competition with a two over par 73, Murphy shot 78 in the second round after dropping five shots over the first three holes and then another five shots over the first three holes of the back nine.

In addition to his second place finish, Murphy was also tied first for most birdies (13) and the best Par Five average (4.33).

Josh Mackin was also in action In Rosapenna and the DKIT student shot rounds of 75, 75 and 78 to finish 11th.

The annual Captain’s Dinner will take place in the Clubhouse on November 16.

Dundalk Looking Good celebrates community spirit Dundalk and its residents were certainly looking good as the annual celebration of dedication and community spirit among residents groups, volunteers and the business community in Dundalk took place in the Táin Theatre on Thursday October 2.

Dundalk Looking Good is one of the highlights of the Council’s calendar and is a fitting event to reward all those who work tirelessly to make Dundalk the best it can possibly be. Prizes were given out on the night to many categories including housing estates, best gardens, hospitality and business premises.

Cllr Liam Reilly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, warmly praised all those who took part in the competition this year and championed the value of volunteerism which contributes to make Dundalk a great place.

He also acknowledged the contribution of the Tidy Towns committee in particular, as he understands the challenges they face and the amount of time they put in, from his work as a volunteer in Dromiskin.

Louth County Council nominated for SEAI Sustainable Energy Award Louth County Council has again been recognised for its commitment to energy-saving projects across the county with a nomination for the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) Sustainable Energy Awards. The Council has been nominated in the ‘community’ category. This is the third occasion this year that the Council has been commended for its energysaving work.

The SEAI Sustainable Energy Awards encourage and reward excellence in energy management. This nomination is a recognition of energy saving works delivered by a Better Energy Communities (BEC) project in which Louth County Council was the grantee. The project works were completed in the last year by many beneficiaries working with the Council, with the assistance of €450,000 in funding from the SEAI’s Better Energy Communities Programme and energy credits from Bord Gais Energy. These projects include energy improvement and upgrade works for: Dundalk Simon Community,

Seatown House, Jocelyn Street, Dundalk.

In February, Louth County Council received a Special Recognition Award for Innovation in Social Housing and the Community at the Local Authority Members Association (LAMA) Awards for energy-saving initiatives that have resulted in energy savings of some €600,000 since 2015. In the same month, the Council also received ISO 50001 certification from the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) in recognition of the development of its own Energy Management System (EnMS).

Speaking ahead of the SEAI Sustainable Energy Awards, Senior Executive Engineer, Louth County Council, Pádraig O’Hora said: “Promoting sustainable development, protecting the environment and improving the qual-

While this isn’t a major cause of concern if your battery is in good condition, where your car battery is older (on average batteries rarely last longer than 5 years) or you have found your car slow to start on occasion this additional power usage may be too much for your battery to handle.

Replacing one near the end of its life can save a lot of time and inconvenience at the side of the road. Meanwhile, being energy conscious during your driving can also help your battery. For example, avoid running electrical systems any longer than necessary – turn the heater fan down and switch the heated rear window off once windows are clear.

Antifreeze A continuous squealing noise as soon as the engine is started is a sign the water pump is frozen – it’s the fan belt slipping on the pulley. The cylinder block could be frozen too. Stop the engine immediately and allow it to thaw out. This may take several days unless the car can be moved to a heated garage.

If the car begins to overheat a few miles from home it’s likely that the radiator has frozen preventing coolant from circulating.

Stop straight away to avoid serious damage and allow the radiator to thaw.

Tyres We recommend at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring, and certainly no less than 2mm.

While the minimum legal requirement is 1.6mm of thread, during the icy weather we may encounter during the winter having some extra thread of your tyres is vital.

Similarly, if you’ve ever heard the old wives’ tale that reducing your tyre pressure will give you more grip then you’re better off ignoring it. Not only does this not work, it also reduces your

car’s stability. Don’t reduce tyre pressures to get more grip – it doesn’t work, and reduces stability.

Driving Tips Driving during the winter season can be more challenging than at any other time the year as weather conditions can change drastically over the course of a single day. The combination of changing weather, reduced daylight and the increased risk of fatigue kicking in during the pre and post-work commute unfortunately often leads to an increase in incidents on Irish roads at this time of year. However, a few small changes to your driving behaviour can go a long way towards keeping our roads safe.

Be Alert to the Risk of Fatigue While fatigue is an issue for drivers all year round, the winter season brings with it a heightened risk as we often find ourselves doing most of our driving in darkness. This combined with the additional commitments you may be juggling in the months ahead, such as work parties or Christmas shopping, can lead to your concentration slipping while you’re behind the wheel. If you find this happening the best option is to pull in somewhere safe and take a 10 to 15 minute break from driving, ideally getting a coffee if you have the option to do so.

Plan your journey in advance During the winter season your car may take a little longer to get started in the morning so plan ahead and get up at least 10 minutes early to give you time to prepare the car. Far too often we all encounter motorists driving around during the winter season with only a small gap cleared in their windscreen – don’t be one of these people. Only begin your commute when the windscreen is fully clear, using a scraper and de-icer if necessary.

Most importantly, remember to prioritise your own safety and that of other road users ahead of

punctuality in the months ahead – especially if the weather worsens.

Driving in snow/ice Over the next few weeks and months we’re likely to encounter snow, high winds, heavy rainfall and every kind of weather condition in between. The best advice is to slow down and use gentle manoeuvres when driving to stay safe and to adapt your driving to the weather on the day – for example, stopping distances are 10 times longer in ice and snow.

If you find yourself driving on snowy or ice roads, the remember to use a low gear when driving uphill and leave plenty distance between you and the car in front of you. If driving down a slope then reduce your speed before you reach the hill, use a low gear and try to avoid any sudden braking.

Dress Appropriately No this isn’t about making sure you’re warm in your car, but about making sure that you have the right footwear for driving. During the course of your day, the shoes you wore to work could become wet from rain or snow, potentially increasing the risk that they could slip off the pedals of your car. Having a pair of flat shoes which you keep in your car and only use for driving could also go a long way towards staying safe on the roads.

Watch out for breakdowns and vulnerable road users While the number of pedestrians and cyclists may drop slightly during the winter months, especially if weather conditions worsen significantly, it’s important that you remain on the lookout for these vulnerable road users while driving and allow extra space when overtaking. For example, during high winds a cyclist of pedestrian could easily be blown off course so exercising additional caution is vital.

Similarly, you are more likely to encounter a broken down car during the course of your driving over the coming months.
