Dunleer parish priest Fr Michael Murtagh appealed for anybody with information regarding the murder of Cameron Reilly to come forward and speak to Gardaí. Fr Murtagh was speaking at the funeral of 18-year-old Cameron who was found dead in Dunleer on Saturday May 26.

A post-mortem examination found he had been strangled and there is currently a murder investigation underway as Gardaí try to establish the facts of what happened on the evening Cameron died.

Both Lannleire and St Kevin’s GAA clubs formed a guard of honour as Cameron’s remains were brought from a funeral home in the village to the church. Fr Murtagh spoke of the terrible shock and sadness which had overcome the close-knit community and spoke of the deep affection people had for Cameron who he described as ‘a quiet, helpful courteous young man’.

Louth GAA mourns passing of manager Louth GAA is in mourning following the sudden passing of the Ladies team manager, Micheál McKeown, on Tuesday evening.

Mr McKeown was preparing for the Wee County’s Leinster Junior Championship clash with Kilkenny on Sunday when he was taken ill at home.

He was rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital but sadly he passed away on Tuesday.

The 67-year-old, who took over as Louth manager in October, was well known in GAA circles having managed Westerns and Annaghminnon in Louth, See Page 2

Minor Injuries Unit change is delayed again The long-promised reduction in the age of patients cared for at the Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) at the Louth County Hospital has been delayed yet again, according to Cllr Anne Campbell.

The Sinn Féin Councillor has revealed that it could now be as late as the end of September before the MIU will be in a position to drop the age limit from its current 14 years to five.

The news came after Cllr.

Campbell asked a question about the facility at the Re-

gional Health Forum meeting in Kells on Monday.

“Sinn Féin TD Gerry Adams, along with Cllr. Tomás Sharkey, and I have been consistently asking when the MIU will drop the age limit after it was announced by Health Minister Simon Harris as far back as February last year,” stated Cllr Campbell.

“In November, when the Fine Gael leadership was in Louth, it was announced with a great fanfare that this would happen in the first

quarter of 2018 but when that deadline passed, both Gerry Adams and I continued to ask when it would happen.

“We were subsequently told in March that the plan was to have the reduction in place by the end of June, but following my question to the RSCI Hospital Group, who run the Louth County, it has been revealed that it could be as late as September this year,” she continued.

During Father Murtagh’s homily he asked people to reflect on what had happened and examine the direction in which their life was going.

be.

“I would say to them that life is very precious and that parents, teachers and people generally are very supportive.

Everybody wants the best for you. Don’t suppose that they do not understand. They do have your best interests at heart.”

Meanwhile investigations continue with regards to Cameron’s murder. Gardaí have appealed for anybody with any information about the case to come forward and they are particularly interested in finding Cameron’s missing Apple iPhone 8 Plus which they feel will provide vital clues.

The phone is believed to have been stolen following the murder and is black with a lime green trim along the edge.

Louth GAA is in mourning following the sudden passing of the Ladies team manager, Micheál McKeown, on Tuesday evening.

He led Monaghan Ladies to the AllIreland title in 1996.

This year he had guided Louth to the Division 4 National League Final where they lost out to Wicklow.

A statement from the Louth LGFA read: “A Chara, it is with great regret that I bring you the sad news of the untimely passing of Micheál McKeown Louth LGFA Senior Team manager today. We pass our condolences to his wife Mary, his family circle, and his many friends at this very sad time.”

Banned from driving after damaging patrol car A man who damaged a patrol car while escaping from Gardai was banned from the road when he was convicted at Dundalk District Court.

Dean Harper (23) of 11 Lough Tain, Station Road, Omeath, argued that there was a doubt that he was positively identified as the driver on the date in question. However, Judge John Coughlan was satisfied that the Gardai had positively identified Mr Harper as the driver and he imposed a conviction.

The court heard from the

investigating Garda that on Wednesday November 30, 2016, he was on patrol in Narrow Water, Cornamucklagh, Omeath, when he became suspicious about a parked car.

He drove up to the car on a narrow road but when his colleague got out to investigate the car began revving.

He called for his colleague to get back into the patrol car before the vehicle then collided with the rear of the patrol car and drove off.

He recognised the driver as

The Garda stated that he called to the defendant’s house and his mother’s house later that day but there was no answer.

He arrested Mr Harper on December 10 in relation to the criminal damage and added that the defendant had failed to produce documents.

Solictor Niall Breen stated that when the incident was reported by the Garda, it was noted that there were “unknown occupants” in the car.

However, the Garda stated that he was sure the car was driven by Mr Harper.

The Garda who noted the incident told the court that he had made an error in recording “unknown occupants” as he recalled that the investigating Garda was certain it was the defendant who was driving.

Mr Breen asked that the case be dismissed as there was a doubt as to who was driving and that his client was entitled to the benefit of that doubt.

However, Judge Coughlan imposed a two-year disqualification and €15 fine in relation to the no insurance.

The dangerous driving charge was taken into account, while the criminal damage charge was adjourned to November 21 to allow Mr Harper pay the €1,460 compensation.

Mr Harper also pleaded guilty to a no insurance charge on May 23 last year at Knocknagoran. He was disqualified for four years and fined €15.

Great Northern Distillery to look outside of Louth for whiskey warehouse site Plans to build a whiskey maturation warehouse in Kilcurry have been shelved by the Great Northern Distillery according to a report by the Irish Times.

The company which is run

by John Teeling were hit with a number of rejections from concerned residents in Kilcurry when they announced plans to build a whiskey warehouse facility consisting of thirteen maturation warehouses and ancillary buildings on a 45 hectare site behind St Brigid’s church in the village.

Speaking to the Dundalk Leader in October John Gartland from the ‘Kilcurry Concerned Residents Committee’ stated that the general feeling around the community was that they did not want such a large structure to be built in the area. Residents voiced concerns about the potential size of the project as well as environmental and scenic concerns.

“We have already gauged opinion in the community and nobody wants these warehouses to be built. There are six warehouses being built initially in a field behind the church which will each span 4000sqms. Plonking something that big in the middle of the village not only creates an eyesore but it will also inhibit future gen-

erations’ ability to build houses in the area.

“We also have worries about ‘black whiskey fungus’ which is extremely common in spirits maturation facilities. This fungus is airborne and creates a black soot like material on houses, cars and any physical properties nearby.

The whiskey fungus requires frequent cleaning and causes damage to the physical property and cause their houses to lose value,” explained John Speaking in the Irish Times John Teeling the owner of Great Northern Distillery seemed to admit defeat in trying to push the development through.

“The warehouse won’t be in Co Louth. What’s the point when someone else will come after us?” he asked “We were going to spend over €20m on the complex and we were directed there by Louth County Council, who thought it would be a good place to go to,” said Mr Teeling (72). “We paid top dollar for it and we have spent half a million on EIAs [environmental impact studies], bat studies and heritage studies to do it right.”

Responding to the report in the Irish Times the Concerned Kil-

curry Concerned Residents Committee said they were looking for confirmation that Great Northern Distillery had indeed shelved plans for the development.

“According to a report on the Irish Times website, the Great Northern Distillery are to shelve plans for whiskey maturation warehouses in Kilcurry.

The format of this report seems to be via a one to one interview with Mr. Teeling. At this time, “Kilcurry concerned residents cannot verify if the application has been withdrawn nor can we confirm if the contravention vote for the Louth County Development plan will be going ahead on June 5.

“The article in the Irish Times is extremely one sided, for example, nowhere in the article does it mention that the proposed location for this development was inside one Co. Louth’s designated green belts and nowhere does the article mention that a contravention vote is due to take place among councillors next week.

We welcome any future development which will suggest uses for this land in line with the current County development plan and this has always been our position.,” concluded the statement.

Declan two races from breaking the Guinness World Record

Declan Loy has now only two races to go to equal the Guinness World Record of completing the most Ironman races within a 12 month period after completing race number 23 at Lough Cutra Gort Co Galway on Sunday last, shortly after completing race 22 in Callela Barcelona.

Declan, now known as Iron Dad, began the challenge six months ago and it is a remarkable achievement given that he only started training for Ironman events just 20 months ago.

To date he has swam 43.7 km, Cycled 2,070 km and Run 489.9 km. He has travelled the world in pursuit of the world record to countries such as Cyprus, Sardinia, Turkey, USA, Austria, Dubai, Bahrain, Sri Lanka, UK, Riccione, Spain and many more countries still to go. He will equal the Guinness World record of 24 races within the next two weeks in the UK at Ironman 70.3 Staffordshire and then go on to break the world record at the Challenge Family world Championship in Slovakia which he has qualified for.

When asked what motivates him to keep going, Declan explained: “I believe anything is possible and the only limits we have are the limits we set for ourselves. It’s all in the mind. The body can do so much more when the mind allows it”.

When asked how he kept going in such conditions, Declan replied “I have a mantra in life and that is, one step at a time, just take one more step and never give in, rest for a while if you need to but never give in.”

Declan now heads off to equal the Guinness World Record this weekend in Slovakia at the Challenge Family World Championship race. As part of his world record challenge he managed to qualify for the Challenge Championship race. It shows there’s always a way to achieve what you want. “I am really looking for-

ward to the Challenge Championship race and equalling the world record. This race will be filled with leading world triathletes and to have the opportunity to race alongside some of these stars will be amazing,” he added.

Declan is completing his world record challenge to raise funds for a Charity called Super You which helps to empower youth with tools in mental and emotional wellbeing.

Given that Ireland has the 4th highest rate of teenage suicide today you can understand why this is so important.

On the spot fines failing to clean up after dogs The issue of dog fouling around town was brought up once again at this month’s Municipal Meeting of Dundalk meeting with Cllr Emma Coffey submitted a motion on the subject.

Cllr Coffey’s motion asked for immediate on the spot fines to owners of dogs who do not collect or carry bags to clean up dog foul on public roads and footpaths. The motion read: “Calling on LCC to immediately issue on the spot fines to owners of dogs who do not collect or carry bags to clean up dog fowl on the public roads and footpaths of the town in accordance with the Bye laws passed by LCC in 2015.”

In reply Louth County Council said they have been actively using provisions in the legislation to manage dog fouling in public places and revealed that they have

issued a total of eight penalty notices so far this year. However, they did note that it is difficult to catch dog owners on the spot giving that many walk early in the morning or late in the evening.

“The issues dealt with under the Dog Litter and Dog Control Bye-Laws 2015 have already been provided for under other enactments. Louth County Council has been actively using these provisions to manage dog fouling in our public places. As dog walking is often an activity conducted late in the evening or early in the morning, as persons in charge of dogs are aware of the fact that dog fouling is an offence, and as there is no way of connecting a deposit with a particular dog owner without witnessing the occurrence, enforcing the law and issuing penalties presents certain difficulties.

“Nevertheless, Louth County Council continues in its enforcement efforts and issues fixed penalty notices on an ongoing basis for this offence, eight so far this year. Aside from issuing fixed penalty notices for instances where such offences have been witnessed by our wardens, our wardens combine to carry out on a regular basis joint foot patrols in targeted areas during which the litter vans carrying anti dog fouling signs to raise awareness are parked at various locations in the targeted area.

“Leaflet drops are done in housing areas, and dog walkers are approached and questioned as to whether they carry bags to remove the dog waste. In general the wardens report a very high rate of persons carrying dog waste bags,” concluded the rely from council officials.

Fyffes ‘Fit Squad’ returns

The Fyffes Fit Squad is returning to Dundalk Schools

Following recent successes at O Fiaich and De La Salle Colleges, Fyffes Fit Squad initiative is returning to Dundalk with another two events in the pipeline.

Today (June 7) 120 pupils from Second and Third Class in Scoil Mhuire Na nGael will participate in the hour-

long, interactive session to be held at the school. This will be followed by another event on June 14, where again, 120 pupils from Junior Infants to Fifth Class at CBS Primary will take part.

Aimed at promoting healthy eating and an active lifestyle, especially amongst young peo-

ple, topics covered will include an active workout plus talks and tips on healthy eating, all designed to improve children’s general fitness through engaging and fun-filled activities.

A man who was charged with being drunk in charge of his car escaped a conviction on a technicality at Dundalk District Court.

Kevin Redmond (36) of 1 Mountain View, Quay St, Dundalk, was found to be over the limit after being arrested on April 16 last year at Francis St, Dundalk.

However, solicitor Michael Woods argued that the case

should be dismissed due to an error in the Garda statement.

He pointed out that according to the statement the Garda had “formed his opinion”.

He argued that the Garda is supposed to form “an” opinion, as the statement suggested that somebody else had formed the opinion. He suggested that this error amounted to more than a simple ‘”typo”.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that in his direct evidence the Garda had stated that he formed the opinion. However, Judge John Coughlan ruled that the accuracy of the statement was vital and that the case should be dismissed.

The court heard that the defendant was stopped by the Garda at 2.45am on the date in question.

Round 6 of the Bike Station Cycling League finished at the top of Flagstaff Mountain, meaning that the final 2.75km was a grueling climb. A warm evening saw the race divided into its usual groups. Group 6 were moving swiftly and had caught group 5 by the time they left Lordship on the Carlingford Road. However as they approached the turn for the climb at Davy’s Pub, groups 3 and 4 had ridden well to maintain their lead.

Once on the climb, three riders from group 6,

Macdara O`Graham, Tómas McCabe and Liam Dolan forged ahead of the others. The trio raced up the climb and swept up nearly all those in front.

However Newry Wheelers rider Sean McDonnell did just enough to hold on to take the narrowest of victories. Liam Dolan was next home ahead of Tómas McCabe. Another rider from group 4 Gary Marron of Ardee Cycling Club survived to take fourth ahead of O’Graham.

In race 2, also finishing atop the mountain,

saw a victory for Michael Fitzgerald, ahead of Andrew Flood and Christopher Kelly.

Race 5 of the mountain bike league saw some big hitters on the podium. Belfast teenage talent Lee Harvey was the winner, ahead of the very experienced campaigner Glyn O`Brien.

Third place went to another member of the Harvey family with younger brother Dean in third. In the underage league Niall O’Donoghue was the winner with Eoin Carthy in second and Lorcan Feeney in third.

Meeting to discuss implications for border areas A meeting will be organised by Louth County Council to allow MEPs and the Border Communities Against Brexit (BCAB) group to discuss the implications of Britain’s proposed exit from the EU. The Sinn Féin representative was speaking after making a proposal to invite MEPs and the Border Communities Against Brexit (BCAB) group to a special meeting of Louth County Council in

the coming months. This future event was approved by members at the recent council meeting.

“Brexit and its impact on the people of the border area must remain front and centre of political discourse both in Louth and in Europe” Dundalk councillor Ruairí Ó Murchú has said.

Council CEO Joan Martin advised it could take until September before schedules are fixed but Councillors

pressed for it to take place in June, before the crunch EU Council meeting.

Cllr. Ó Murchú said, “At the council meeting, I stated that while welcoming the recent event in DKIT, attended

by EU negotiator Michel Barnier, this invitation to the MEPs and the BCAB, is about keeping the border issue and this area especially, front and centre of the Brexit discussion.

“We would like to see the

meeting sooner rather than later but unfortunately, it is very likely that even if it did happen as late as September, the detail from the British government would still be lacking.

“We welcome the actions of BCAB taking their protest to the streets of London on Friday 1st June. University College London is hosting a conference, Introducing the Irish Border: Conflict, creativity & Customs posts.

Dundalk native first Irish winner of Oslo Business for Peace award Dundalk native Martin Naughton was awarded a 2018 Oslo Business for Peace award in recognition of his efforts to promote the role of the private sector in contributing to peace and environmental sustainability, by the Business for Peace Foundation.

Works on Dublin Road will reinstate cycle lanes Works, currently causing significant traffic disruption on the Dublin Road in Dundalk, are to reinstate the cycle lanes damaged by pipe and cable laying, Cllr Anne Campbell has revealed.

The Sinn Féin Councillor has been speaking to the contractors, GMC, as well as Irish Water, and has been told the cycle lanes are to be reinstated in the coming days.

“Hundreds of motorists, as well as residents, hospital patients and students going to DkIT, have been impacted by the traffic delays caused by roadworks currently taking place on the Dublin Road, from the College to Hill Street Bridge.

“I have today (Wednesday) been speaking to the onsite contractors, GMC, who have informed me that the works are being done on behalf of Irish Water, who this winter, carried out a significant pipe laying project in the area.

“As a condition to the council

granting permission to lay the pipes, Irish Water promised to reinstate the well-used cycle lane. The works, which started this week, are part of that reinstatement.

“The current phase of work, where a tarmac coursing is being laid, is expected to be completed by Friday evening, June 1.

“However, I have to warn people that there will be a further few days of work, probably in the middle of June, to lay the anti-slip top on the cycle lane and then the white lines will also have to be put down.”

Sub Aqua Club dive rally Dundalk Sub Aqua Club are hosting their first Dive Rally in June and look forward to showcasing the wonderful dive sites in Carlingford Lough from Friday June 15 to Sunday 17.

They are expecting divers from all over the country who are looking forward to this opportunity for some exciting diving and also to enjoy the scenic Cooley Peninsula.

There will be an op-

portunity on the weekend to dive on some of the wrecks lying in the lough and along the coast, as well as the reef dive sites at the entrance to the lough.

Two well-known ships The Connemara and The Retriever collided during a storm and sank in 1916 with the loss of 97 lives.

These wrecks are situated close together and provide very interesting dives.

There is plenty of life in and around the wrecks.

The scenic dive sites range in depth from 6 metres to 25 metres and there is a dive there suitable for all divers.

The organisers are always amazed at the variety and quantity of life on the local dive sites, with many different species of life, sponges, sea squirts, octopus, anemones, fish life, lobster and conger eels.

Business project at Grammar Dunleer Duck Derby set to be a ‘quacker’

Dunleer Tidy Towns has been forging ahead with completing their five-year plan for the improvement of the town and this will take local funding of their own as well as public funding.

In order to raise the necessary funds we are holding a duck Derby on Sunday June 10. It will be a fun day for all the family. There will be the usual betting on ducks for the races and also the children’s novelty races where they can win a novelty prize if their duck comes in first.

Students from Dundalk Grammar School who took part in the business project

Fifth Year Business students in Dundalk Grammar School were asked to research, as a group or individual, a business of their choice, and to submit their findings as a bound typedup report. In all, 15 businesses were researched, from local to national.

The students hosted a presentation event in the School to present their finished Reports to representatives of the various businesses covered. Businesses who attended the event included IBM, National Pen, O’Callaghan Insurance, The River Cafe, Apple, P & A Quinn

Ltd and Ulster Bank.

The students made short presentations on their reports, and then presented each business represented with a copy of their report.

Michael Gaynor, President Dundalk Chamber of Commerce, was in attendance, and he gave an upbeat presentation on his assessment of the future economic development of Dundalk.

The event was a fitting and positive conclusion to the months of work put in by the students to their Rreports. It was evident to all present of the

work they had put in, and of the learning they had got out of their research, which had included visiting their chosen business, meeting with staff, and collating all the information gathered.

Students presented with awards for their reports were Emily O’Hare and Ruth McGahon (The River Cafe), Aaron Quinn and Evan McDonald (P & A Quinn Ltd), Finn Reilly (The Olympic Council of Ireland), Alex Burgess (Westgate Veterinary Hospital), Sean Durnin, Rachel O‘Brien and Serena Matthews (The Great Northern Distillery).

Court incident led to public order charge

A man who appeared at Dundalk District Court to answer public order charges had his case adjourned.

Michael O’Hagan (50) of Mary St North, Dundalk, appeared in relation an incident at Dundalk Court House on May 2. He was charged with using threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour, failing to provide his name and address

to a Garda when requested, and with failing to comply with the direction of a Garda by allegedly shouting profanities in the courtroom at members of the public and An Garda Siochana.

Mr O’Hagan continued to be abusive in the lobby of the courthouse with members of the public present.

Judge John Coughlan put back the case to June 13.

Almost €49,000 in capital grants has been awarded to Louth childcare providers according to Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr Katherine Zappone.A total of €6.87m in Capital funding will be awarded to providers of Early Years and School Age Childcare across Ireland.

Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick said that the announcement follows on from the childcare measures introduced last September, giving up to 70,000 children extra supports.

“This funding will contribute towards the creation of new childcare places, natural outdoor play areas and the essential maintenance and repair of services here in Louth.

“The capital funding has been awarded following the completion of a very competitive application and appraisal process.

“The approved Early Years and School Age Capital funding for 2018 has been made available to the following childcare providers here in Louth: Happy Days Playschool Old School, Dromiskin Realt na Mara Preschool & Afterschool Realt na Mara National School Kidz Academy Ltd Greenacres, Avenue Road, Dundalk, Co. Grammar students impress at school triathlon event

The seventh annual Louth Transition Year Triathlon took place Wednesday May 16 in Carlingford.

The event, which was organised by Louth Local Sports Partnership, the Louth PE Teachers Network, An Garda Síochána and Setanta Triathlon Club saw 96 students representing six schools from throughout the county compete in both team and individual events.

Louth Sports Partnership would like to thank Four Seasons Hotel Leisure Centre for the use of their pool and premises. Competitors were required to complete a 144m swim, a 9k

Cycle and a 3k Run. Schools involved were: Bush Post Primary School, Our Lady’s College, Drogheda Grammar School, Scoil Ui Mhuiri Dunleer, Dundalk Grammar School and Colaiste Chu Chulainn.

Artisans’ annual exhibition The cream of Dundalk’s artists will showcase a selection of their paintings at their Annual Exhibition in the Louth County Library, Roden Place from the 13th June to 22nd June 2018.

This year’s exhibition will be opened by Paddy Donnelly and Billy Doyle (Chairperson and CEO of Dundalk Credit Union).

The Artisans are an everexpanding group of about thirty artists ranging from beginner to expert level who specialise in water colour painting. They meet

up every Friday in Carroll Meade at 7:30pm and new members are always welcome.

Pat Cooling who has been a member of the collective for the last thirteen years says that the exhibition is a chance for the artists to showcase some of the paintings they have been working on throughout the year.

“This exhibition has been running for many years now and we’re grateful for the support we have received each year

County Louth Agricultural Show returns to Bellurgan The 2018 County Louth Agricultural Show takes place on Sunday June 10 in Bellurgan Park. Now in its 129th year, the County Louth Agricultural Show offers a day of competition, exhibitions, entertainment and fun for all the family.

Bellurgan Park, situated in the scenic Cooley Peninsula, plays host to County Louth’s premier agricultural event and John Wehrly, the Chair of the show’s organising committee said: “I am delighted to be returning to Bellurgan Park. This picturesque agricultural estate is the perfect setting to showcase the best of what rural Ireland has to offer.”

Approximately 4,500 people attended last year’s show and enjoyed a comprehensive programme of competitive events in crafts, culinary, equestrian and livestock. The attendees also visited over 120 trade stands covering the areas of agriculture, home, garden, fashion, forestry, energy, food, travel, property, health and many more.

The programme this year will feature all the regular events and competitions as well as some exciting new additions. The show will also host competitive home industry events for children and those with special needs.

Teenager Joseph Laverty landed the first major of his young career when he produced a superb five-under par 67 to take the Irwin Lockington Salver in perfect conditions on Sunday.

Playing alongside seasoned veterans Edward Rogers and Clem Walshe, Laverty played some fine golf from tee to green in compiling a round that included one birdie, 13 pars, three bogeys and a double-bogey six at the short par four 14th.

His birdie came at the par three 13th and the cornerstone of his round was a run of seven consecutive pars from the fourth hole as the nine handicapper signed for 76 gross and a 67 nett.

That was enough to pip Frank Byrne (8) who almost pulled off a memorable weekend double having managed, along with his assistant Larry Soraghan, the club’s All-Ireland Fourball team to the Leinster quarter-finals on Saturday with a great 3-2 win over Headfort.

Byrne shot a four under par 68 and took second overall on countback from Austin Carroll (16). Carroll had the consolation of winning Category 2 with Nicholas McKeown (10) winning Category 1 and Patsy Arrowsmith (17) claiming Category 3. Another of the club’s young tigers, Josh Mackin (1), claimed the Gross Prize with a three-over par 75.

Alan Hurley’s good form delivered an overall victory on Wednesday last when he won the weekly Open Singles Stableford competition. Hurley, who had finished third last Sunday, shot an unbeatable 42pts off five to win by two points from James McCaul (22).

Applications are still being accepted across all competitive exhibitions and trade stands are still available.

It’s been another good week on the team front for Dundalk Golf Club as two teams took big steps towards Leinster pennants at the expense of Headfort Golf Club.

The men’s All-Ireland Fourball Team and the ladies’ Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy team have both reached the Leinster quarter-finals of their respective competitions after tough matches against their opponents from Meath.

The ladies produced a superb performance last Wednesday when they went to Kells and beat the

home club 4-1 to advance to a last eight meeting with The Island, who defeated the reigning national and provincial champions, Royal Tara, 3-2 in their second round tie.

Managed by Mags Coburn and Rita Moriarity, the ladies played some great golf and got on top early on in four of the five matches.

There were wins for Elizabeth McGuinness & Briege Renaghan, Mary Hession & Siobhan Duffy, and Maureen Sheridan & Geraldine Blackmore.

Dooley, and Theresa Smyth & Oonagh Quinn, were both well in the hunt for victory when their matches were called in.

The men’s All-Ireland Fourball team, under the management of Frank Byrne and Larry Soraghan, beat Headfort 3-2 last Saturday in a contest that saw all five matches decided on the 17th hole.

Play began in the three away matches at Headfort at 9.30am as Dundalk went in search of an away point to ensure the two home matches in Blackrock, which didn’t tee-off until 12.45pm, would de-

termine the overall outcome.

In the top match Eamonn McEneaney and Michael Begley lost 2&1, while Colm Garvey and Davy Cairns lost on a similar score. Dundalk got back into the match when Kevin Carthy and Ray Pepper recorded a 3&1 win.

That left Dundalk trailing 2-1 but with the two home matches still to be decided. Peter O’Brien and Dermot McKenna levelled matters with a 2&1 win, before Adrian Kenny and Gerry McDermott clinched victory with

Fís 2018 creative arts, media and music exhibition Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music at Dundalk Institute of Technology launched their annual Fís exhibition on Wednesday June 6 at the PJ Carroll Building.

CONCERN AROUND INSURANCE PRICES GROWING AMONG MOTORISTS A majority of motorists are more concerned about the cost of their car insurance than they were at this point 12 months ago, according to recent research from AA Ireland.

A survey of over 4,000 motorists undertaken by the AA found that 50.71% of respondents ‘strongly agreed’ that they were more concerned about the cost of cover now than they were last year.

Meanwhile, a further quarter of those surveyed (25.14%) stated that they ‘somewhat agreed’ that their level of concern had risen.

“The story of high insurance costs isn’t a new now, but it is an issue which has fallen off the priority list at Leinster House. Ultimately, while the significant annual increases that many people were seeing in 2015 and 2016 have largely eased, the majority of motorists are still paying more for their cover than they would have in previous years and when you combine this with a lack of clear intervention from our politicians it’s unsurprising that people are more concerned about this is-

“Between Brexit and the housing crisis there is a lot on the government’s agent at the moment, but that doesn’t mean they can either ignore the issue of insurance costs or see it as a battle won just because less people are getting a jaw-dropping increase when their renewal notice arrives.”

“Earlier this year we estimated that despite the decreases in insurance costs reported by the Central Statistics Office, the average motorist was still paying approximately 30% more for cover than they were in 2015. The actions that government

need to take to ease the burden have been highlighted routinely and, in fact, many of the recommendations in the Cost of Insurance Working Group’s report reflected the suggestions of the AA and other organisations.

Unfortunately, since the report’s publication we haven’t seen enough follow through and it appears that the report is now simply gathering dust on a shelf somewhere in the Department of Finance.”

The AA survey also found that 10.81% of those surveyed ‘strongly agreed’ that they had shopped around less this year when renewing their car insurance than they had in previous

years. Meanwhile, a further 16.95% ‘somewhat agreed’ that this had been the case.

“Throughout 2015 and 2016, with many motorists seeing significant increases in their cover costs at the time of renewal, we all became very adept at doing additional research to ensure we received the best price for our cover,” Faughnan added.

It does look, however, that as the year-on-year increases have eased or turned to decreases in some cases, some of us are starting to forget about the importance of shopping around and leaving potential savings behind us as a result.”
