A 27-year-old man from Crossmaglen appeared before a special sitting of Dundalk District Court on Sunday evening as he was charged with the murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe.

Aaron Brady from New Road, Crossmaglen, Armagh is the first person to be charged with the murder of Detective Garda Donohue who was shot outside Lordship Credit Union in January 2013. The accused has denied any involvement with the murder.

At the special sitting of the district court on Sunday evening Detective Inspector Pat Marry from Dundalk Garda station told the court that Aaron Brady had been arrested at 6.57pm on March

4th and charged with murder shortly afterwards.

He also stated that when charged with murder Aaron Brady had responded by saying “I strongly deny any involvement in the murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe.”

The accused was remanded in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court on Friday. There was a heavy Garda presence outside the court as Brady was led in.

Members of the US Department Homeland Security were also in attendance. Caroline Donohoe, wife of Adrian, was also in attendance for the short hearing which lasted less than ten minutes.

More than 60 families who are on Louth County Council’s housing list will be accommodated in the Ard Dealgan complex in Dundalk, which will reopen as Halliday Mills next year.

On Monday Celtic Social Housing Development Co Ltd signed a contract with Túath Housing to bring 68 units at the Dundalk development back into use. The complex, which is being refurbished by the development company, will be leased by Túath Housing for a 20-year period and will be available to applicants on Louth County Council’s social housing list.

Ard Dealgan, which was built by Tom McFeely’s Coalport Building Company, has been vacant since it was the subject of a Fire Closure Notice in 2009. This followed an inspection which found that the manner of construction of the apartments was poor, with a general non-compliance of all regulatory matters.

It will now be redeveloped into a 68-unit complex, comprising 10 onebed, 46 two-bed and

Celtic Social Housing Development Co Ltd for offering it for social housing. The complex will be refurbished to a high standard and the developer has already started health and safety compliance measures. The 68 units will provide safe and comfortable accommodation for a range of individuals and families in Louth when they come on stream next year.

“This is just one of a number of initiatives that Louth County Council is undertaking as part of the Rebuild-

ing Ireland programme to increase the level of social housing across the county. We have increased the number of social housing units in the county by 170 in the last three years.

We are continuing this work in 2018, with a plan for an additional 208 units by the end of the year.”

Chief Executive of Louth County Council, Joan Martin added that Louth County Council is a national leader in the compulsory purchase of derelict or abandoned properties.

“We have acquired 65 properties over the past three years through CPOs, already providing accommodation for 26 households under this mechanism.

“Louth County Council has a target of 208 additional social housing units in 2018 and we are working hard towards achieving that target, which we aim to do through a mixture of CPOs and CALF (Capital Advance Leasing Fund) partnerships with approved housing bodies,” added Ms Martin.

Huge effort to help survive Storm Emma

Not everybody were fortunate enough to be sitting inside by a warm fire last week as the Beast from the East ground most of the country to a halt. There were many heroes who braved the elements locally to ensure doctors, nurses and home carers got to work and vulnerable people were looked after during the worst of the weather.

Thankfully Louth escaped the very worst of what Storm Emma had to offer but the conditions still caused plenty of chaos locally with schools and a number of workplaces closed on Friday as roads were deemed unsafe to travel on with people advised to stay indoors for the duration of the status red warning issued by Met Eireann.

Locally the many state and voluntary emergency bodies such as the Civil Defence, Army, County Council workers, fire service and rescue life guard service braved the elements to ensure patients were transported to hospital and the elderly and vulnerable were taken care off.

Chris Connolly from the Civil Defence in Dundalk said that there were approximately 20 personnel from town putting in twelve-hour days to help out where possible.

“We were delighted to help and although we were very busy we got off a bit lightly considering how bad some other areas around the country were towards the end of last week.

Basically, we provided four-wheel drive vehicles to assist the likes of the national ambulance service, staff who had to make their way to work

in homeless shelters, home-help staff to locations all around the county, palliative care nurses and home-care nurses for priority care.

“We also transported bone marrow from Belfast Airport to St James Hospital on behalf of aeromedical service. The boys were out non-stop on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 7:30am to 10pm at night in conditions I would have to say were the worst I’ve ever seen in Ireland.

I think the whole country pulled together and helped out where they could which was great to see.

James Larkin, officer in charge in the Greenore Coast Guard Unit was also busy during the storm helping the local authorities to operate the emergency response plan.

“We were also out in our fourwheel drives transporting carers and medical staff to where they had to be and thankfully that was probably about the height of it. We didn’t have any major incidents with people getting in trouble on the water or up the mountains. I’m glad to see the back of it though to tell you the truth.,” stated James.

Louth County Council were also very busy during the worst of the conditions and met regularly with the HSE and An Garda Síochána under the Major Emergency Management structure to discuss what needed to be done and ensure everybody was safe.

A team of hardy gritting crews were out at 2am on planned routes each morning while operations crews cleared the main thoroughfares in Ardee, Dundalk town centre and all surrounding areas.

AN AC/DC charity night named “Remembering Malcolm Young” is taking place in Dundalk later this month. This event is being held by SOSAD and Birches and will take place in the Bodhran Bar on Bridge Street on Friday, 23rd March.

What the event has in store is a

screening of AC/DC performing and then a once only performance by the ThunderStruck’s all star band. Coming to the end of the evening a DJ will be cranking out more AC/DC classics while throughout the night band memorabilia will be auctioned off and finger food will be served.

Friends of St Olivers 5K

The Friends of St Oliver’s Community Hospital in Dundalk have announced a 5k walk and run which takes place on the morning of Saturday March 24.

All runners, walkers and joggers are welcome to take part in this flat, accurately measured, timed 5K course which starts at 11am from Dowdallshill GAA club on the Newry Road.

It costs €15 to compete with the funds raised going to provide much-needed money for the hospital to help enhance the excellent care provided to elderly people from the community who have contributed to their locality all their lives.

Plenty of success for local dancers at All-Irelands

Dundalk’s own ‘Red Army’ marched on the Kingdom of Kerry last week as Scoil Rince Mona Ni Rodaigh danced their way to success at Oireachtas Rince na hÉireann in Killarney.

Led by Mona herself, the local school went on to take an incredible four All Ireland titles back to the town, including two for solo dancing and two for céili dancing.

An achievement unparalleled by any other Irish school.

The week kicked off on a high as the youngest dancers sealed the first title with the SubMinor Céili taking first place Under 11. There was further team success during the week as the U13 teams, both mixed & girls came in as runners-up.

Gareth O’Connor, the school’s reigning World Champion took home the U17 Boys championship with a very decisive win on Thursday last, beating stiff competition from the UK and the USA as well as

several of the best Irish lads.

Friday saw further céili success as the U19 ladies from Dundalk took yet another first place and that was soon followed by the U21 Ladies result which saw Alannah Murray win in style with a flawless 500 points (perfect score).

In a field of the finest dancers in the world, this was an incredible achievement.

Some of the school’s solo dancers also featured on the podium including Caolán Brogan in third place and Niamh Muldowney in fifth place, and afterwards Mona expressed her pride in the achievements of the dancers.

“It’s always difficult to know how competitions like this will go – we work incredibly hard down in St Nicholas’ Hall day in, day out. It’s

very special for me and my daughters Ciara and Dearbhla to see great results like this coming back to Dundalk. We expect such high standards from our dancers but thankfully days like this make it all worthwhile.

“We were back in action as soon as we returned from Killarney though as the World Championships take place Easter week in

Glasgow- no rest for the wicked,” added Mona.

Meanwhile there was also success for dancers in the McGee School of Irish Dance in Dundalk with the talented Elliot Kewele picking up another All Ireland title by winning the U13 title in Killarney.

Elliot is picking up where he left off in 2017 having won the Irish National Championships last July as

well as finishing third in the highly competitive World Championships last Easter.

There was also excellent displays from Emma Duffy who finished fourth in the U11 section, Abby Dunne who finished 26th in the U15s, Sarah lee who received a medal in the U12s. Rachel Lee who finished fourth in the U10s and finally EvaNicole Loy who finished a very commendable sixth in the under 10s.

Ellie Cooney, Megan Dunne, Ellie Grant were also highly commended for their efforts in Killarney.

Nicola and Dervla McGee who run the school were understandably delighted with how their pupils fared in Killarney with Nicola praising the young dancer’s work ethic.

“They are great children and always give it their all to get ready for these competitions. They come to class three days a week and I know that Elliot for example gets up early to practice be-

fore school. All of them are very dedicated and deserve all the success that has come to them,” stated Nicola.

The talented dancers can’t afford to rest on their laurels however as the World Championships in Glasgow are just around the corner with the competition taking place during Easter week. Emily Duffy, Sara Lee, Abby Dunne and Elliot Kewele have all qualified for the prestigious event and will be aiming for further success in Scotland next month.

It wasn’t just the pupils of the McGee School of Irish Dance celebrating with teacher Nicola recently celebrating passing her TCRG exam. Having passed the exam Nicola is now officially a certified Irish dance teacher by An Coimisiún le Rincí Gaelacha, the international Irish dance organisation with whom the majority of the world’s (and most of the United States’) Irish dance schools are affiliated.

Ireland’s youngest international model Allie Farrell has had a busy year as she takes the Fashion Industry by storm.

Last March Allie, who attends Children’s World Pre-School in Ravensdale walked in Paris Fashion Week and little did she know how far that would take her.

Since then the bubbly four-year-old has walked the catwalk in Liverpool, Birmingham, New York and only recently in London. She was chosen

by UK designer Debbie Holden of Camellia Couture last March to walk for her in Paris and following her success there she is now Face of the Camellia Couture Brand.

Allie has also modelled for UK designers Be Unique Be You and Lavender Rose

Allie Farrell Designs as well as USA Designer Krissy King.

Although Allie loves

to show off on the runway her favourite part of her modelling adventures is meeting up

with some of the other girls she has become friends with backstage. She also loves the dressing up and getting hair and make up done.

Mum Stacey said Allie has done was most models would dream of and right now she has no idea how big of a deal it is.

“She absolutely loves taking part in fashion shows and photoshoots. She has gained so much confidence and made so many new friends every time we come home from a trip away she asks how many sleeps until the next one,” explained Stacey.

Allie’s next Fashion Show is a charity event just outside London in April and after that she has been asked back to New York and London for Fashion Week once again in September.

Great success for Marist in Irish public speaking There was great success for St Mary’s College in Gael Linn’s prestigious “Abair” Irish Public Speaking competition on Friday February 23, with Rebecca Lambe-Fagan and Naoise Durnin taking first and second place in the Junior section of the competition. The regional bout took place in Newry.

Competitors in the Junior Section had to speak about a topical issue as Gaeilge for three minutes each. Rebecca spoke about ‘Na contúirtí a bhaineann le nuatheicneolaíocht’ / ‘The dangers linked to modern technology’ Abair 1: Robert Mee-Lucey, Rebecca Lambe-Fa- while Naoise spoke about ‘An gan, Naoise Durnin, Caitlín Rooney.

Robert Mee-Lucey and Caitlín Rooney took part in the Senior section where they had to speak about a topical issue as Gaeilge for four minutes each. Robert discussed ‘Turasóireacht in Éirinn’ / ‘Tourism in Ireland’ while Caitlín discussed ‘Trump agus na Meáin Shóisialta’ / ‘Trump and Social Media’. They performed outstandingly in what was a hotly contested competition involving schools from across the region.

The speakers excelled on the day, receiving high commendation from the judges and Rebecca and Naoise will now proceed to Abair 2: Mr. Seán Ó Maoilsté (Adjudicator). Rebecca Lambe-Fagan, Mr. Shane Quinn (Irish Teacher), Naoise Durnin, Mr. Seán Mac Labhraí (Adjudicator). the final of the competition.

Cancer Society appeals for volunteer drivers in Louth The Irish Cancer Society is looking for volunteer drivers across Louth to collect cancer patients and drive them to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for their chemotherapy as part of the Society’s Volunteer Driver Service. This free transport service is available to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.

Gail Flinter, Patient Travel and Financial Support Manager with the Irish Cancer Society said, “The Volunteer Driver Service allows cancer patients to access free transport to and from their chemotherapy treatments, removing the worry, difficulty and financial burden of travelling at an already stressful time.

This is a door to door service with local drivers driving local patients to and from their treatments.

Charles Sweeney, a Volunteer Driver from Dundalk, has completed almost 50 drives to date. He said, “I started driving for the programme in November 2015 because I know first-hand how important the service is. My wife used it when she was undergoing chemotherapy treatment and all of the clients who I have driven to their chemotherapy appointments really appreciate the service. After I retired I saw an ad in my local paper

looking for drivers so I decided to sign up.”

Gail Flinter concluded, “We have a fantastic network of volunteer drivers around the country who are provided with ongoing training and support but in order to run the service for chemotherapy patients travelling to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, we really need more drivers. with St Patrick’s Day parade

The organisers of the Dundalk St Patrick’s Day Parade have made an appeal for volunteers to help out on the big day.

The committee is seeking as many people as possible to come forward and lend a hand to ensure the smooth running of the parade once again this year. e Organising Committee Chairperson, David Minto outlined the vital role played by volunteers every March 17th in Dundalk.

“Our Volunteers are essential to carrying -out all our plans and oto make sure everyone owho visits the town on -that day enjoys them-selves in safety. The ymore volunteers we rhave, the easier it is for everybody all round.

All participants are being asked to integrate the ‘Dream Big Dundalk’ Theme into their parade entry.

Tug O War team looking for funding for world championships

It may come as a surprise to many but the best indoor tug of war team in the world are based just outside Dundalk in Courtbane near the Louth/Armagh border. St Pat’s Tug of War team have dominated the sport both nationally and internationally under the guidance of coach Hugh Conway.

St. Pats club have been in existence since 1975 and have won 80% of all national titles since 1990. As well as this they have won 16 World titles while representing both club and country.

Volendam, The Nether- ish & Irish Championlands in 2016, British & ships held last week in Irish Golds in 2017 and Enniskillen.

as three fishermen from West Kerry who make an eight-hour round trip twice a week to Courtbane for training is the World Championships which are taking place in China next week.

According to St Pats coach Hugh Conway the club receive ‘not one single penny’ from the Irish Tug of War Association and therefore have to foot the bill for the world championships from their own pockets.

“The St. Pats Tug of War team will be embarking on a very long trip to China next Sunday for the World Indoor Tug of War Championships at the worlds, we will be pulling for two days as the club - where it

National debating final comes to Dundalk

This Saturday (March 10) sees the Macra na Feirme National Senior Debating Final come to the Crowne Plaza, Dundalk at 8pm. Considered by many to be the pinnacle of the Macra year, teams from all over the country have been battling it out over the last number of months for the prestigious title.

The Senior Debating Competition has a rich history spanning from the 1960s until the present day. Always known to be an entertaining evening, the competition has been won three times over the years by Louth: in the 1970s by

Bellurgan Macra, in 1992 by Termonfeckin Macra and most recently last year, 2017, by Termonfeckin Macra, represented by Mary Moran, Eamon Briscoe, Eamonn McQuillan and Helena Reynolds.

2018 sees Awbeg Macra from Co. Cork take on Bree Macra from Co. Wexford in the Crowne Plaza Dundalk, hosted by Louth Macra. Presiding for the evening will be Helena Reynolds, whilst the judges for the evening are renowned former Macra members Paud Leech, Termonfeckin Macra, former Macra National President

is our intention to go one better than at the World Championship in Volendam, where we took three of the four World Club golds. This time we plan to take all four.

“After the two International Club days, we will then change into our green shirts and represent Ireland for two days. Over these two days, we plan to take the crown off Scotland, who are currently the strongest Men’s Indoor Tug-ofwar Nation.

“This journey entails two very long airplane journeys and a train journey as well. When the cost of these journeys is combined with the hotel costs, it will amount to €30,000, a

very substantial amount of money. St. Pats receives no financial assistance from government grants or from our governing body, The Irish Tug of War Association - the funding for all the costs have to be met by St. Pats pullers themselves.

“We have been busy fundraising prior to our trip and have raised some money through a poker classic as well as setting up a gofundme page online. If anybody could support us in our quest to win gold at the world’s we would be very grateful,” stated Hugh.

Louth County Council will celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge 2018 with a programme of cultural events of interest to all ages.

The series of events will run from Thursday, March 1 to Saturday, March 17.

It was certainly a busy midterm break for 47 St Vincent’s students and five of their teachers when they took to the slopes on a fantastic ski trip to Folgaria in Italy.

The renowned ski resort is set in the stunning Dolomites mountain range in the Trentino region and the girls made full use of the excellent beginner and intermediate runs under the expert tuition of the Italian instructors.

Teacher and tour co-ordinator Ultan Henry commended the girls on the progress they made over the week.

“We had a great bunch of students on this year’s trip, with even the ski debutantes advancing onto the more difficult blue and red slopes, which is an amazing achievement in their first week,” he stated.

The group also made a romantic trip into Verona on Valentine’s Day where the sights include the famous balcony from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Students are encouraged to enter competition Secondary school students across the country to register for the ‘GROW 2 CEO’ competition before March 14. The competition combines food growing and entrepreneurship to inspire students to grow their own food, create a soup recipe using what they have grown and develop a potential new business.

Free growing kits will be

delivered to all of the students who have registered for the 2018 competition.

The kits will include everything the students need to grow rocket leaves including the seeds, pots and soil. Students are asked to pair up to undertake the challenge.

Throughout the ‘GROW 2 CEO’ competition, students will be allocated a series of challenges. In the fi-

nal phase, they will be asked to enter the details of their new recipes and business plans for the judging phase.

Five student teams will then be selected for the competition shortlist. These finalists will be invited to a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style pitch scenario at the home of GIY, GROW HQ in Waterford on May 18, where the winning duo will be selected

and crowned ‘GROW 2 CEO’ Champions.

The growing kits will arrive before the Easter midterm break and the competition and challenges will kick off on April 9.

HaggleRock announces dates for new production

HaggleRock Theatre Group is currently preparing to stage their new comedy ‘A Room With A Queue’, written

by Grainne Jordan.

‘A Room With A Queue’ is the story of Emily, a Country and Western line dancing fan who has a long held ambition to follow her passion for country music all the way to Nashville, Tennessee.

AA URGES MOTORISTS TO DITCH MOBILE PHONES WHILE DRIVING A recent study has found that almost 1 in 12 motorists have used their phone while driving at flowing speed on an open road on at least an ‘occasional’ basis.

The survey of over 6,000 Irish road users, undertaken by the AA, found that 5.48% of respondents admitted to occasionally using their phone while driving on an open road, with a further 1.42% admitting to regularly doing so. Most worryingly, 0.83% of respondents stated that they use their phone while driving in flowing traffic on a daily basis.

“Phone use by Irish drivers is at ridiculously high levels.” Says Director of Consumer Affairs Conor Faughnan. “Its dysfunctional. We all know you can’t do it and we all know its dangerous, but every single day Irish drivers in their tens and hundreds of thousands can’t resist the urge.

Put the bloody thing away and watch what you are doing.”

The AA has welcomed tough legislation to help reduce the use of mobiles by road users but again points to deficiencies in the levels of policing on Irish roads.
