Louth Village man Brendan Lawlor claimed the biggest victory of his young golfing career as he picked up the European Disabled Golf Association Troia Trophy in Portugal last weekend.

Twenty-year old Brendan who is a member of Dundalk Golf Club put in a fantastic display to win the tournament by ten shots from Hassan Chakboub from France. This was just Brendan’s second tournament on the EDGA circuit with the talented young golfer finishing a creditable fourth in his debut just before Christmas.

According to Brendan his performance in that tournament gave him plenty of confidence going into last weekend.

“Obviously I’m delighted to have won my first tournament on the European circuit. It was a great experience and I had my Mam and Dad over supporting me which helped a lot. I was looking forward to this tournament as I did pretty well in my first EDGA event just before Christmas. I came fourth in that which was pretty good as the top three ranked players in Europe took part in it.

Dundalk FC supporters had the opportunity to meet the new owners of the football club on Sunday evening at a questions and answers session in the Youth Development Centre.

The company which is based in Chicago was represented on Sunday by Jordan Gardner, Mike Treacy and Fred Spencer while new CEO Mal Brannigan was also in attendance to answer fans questions. Dundalk FC manager Stephen Kenny as well as general manager Martin Connolly were also in attendance.

Approximately 300 Lilywhite supporters were in attendance to find out a bit more about their club’s new owners with the floor open to questions to all in the room. One of the first questions put to the new owners was what were their medium-long term plans for the club.

Newly appointed CEO, Mal Brannigan, outlined what plans the new owners had for the club.

“You will see work on infrastructure done at some point in time but from my point of view it won’t be immediate. It’s all about the football club first and foremost.

And then around that we will look after fans but it will be gradual and over

time rather than straight away.

When asked by a fan if Dundalk would be forced to continue to play big European games in Tallaght Brannigan answered ‘Not if we can help it’.

“Ok, so the plan would be to get Oriel Park into a state that UEFA are happy with and if that means that we have to do something temporary for it to happen then that’s what we will do,” added Mal. Following the meeting the general mood

Now that he has conquered Europe, Brendan has his eyes firmly fixed across the Atlantic where he hopes to take part in the US Open in Orlando in May. The inaugural United States Disabled Open Golf Championship is scheduled for May 8 to 10, 2018 at the Eagle Creek Golf Club located in Orlando, Florida and open to men and women 16 years and over.

Man remanded over Irene White murder A married father of four has been charged in relation to the murder of Irene White in Dundalk almost 13 years ago.

Two days after Anthony Lambe (34), from Annadrumman, Castleblaney, Co Monaghan, was sentenced to life for Ms White’s murder, Niall Power (45) from Gyles Quay, Dundalk, appeared before Dundalk District Court on Wednesday morning.

He had been arrested the previous night

at Dundalk Garda Station and Detective Sergeant Mick Sheridan told judge John Coughlan that he charged Mr Power and that he had made no reply.

Mr Power was remanded in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court via video link on February 8.

He was granted free legal aid.

The theme for the week was “Catholic Schools; Families of Faith” and each day of this special week Monastery NS pupils celebrated “Our Family at Home, “Our School

Family”, “Grandparents: A Special Part of our Family”, “Our Parish Family” and “Our World Family”.

Internet Safety Guide at library A unique new Louth-produced internet safety guide aims to prevent older people becoming cyber victims and curb the fear many have of using the internet.

The first-of-its kind booklet which encourages older people to surf online with confidence was launched this week at the County Library by Dragon’s Den personality and age friendly advocate Gavin Duffy.

The information guide was devised by the Louth Citizens Information Service and sup-

ported by the Louth Age Friendly Programme to increase the usage of IT by older people and create awareness of the pitfalls of being online.

The comprehensive guide details all the dangers of the internet and advises on how to spot scams, protect passwords, buy safely online and become more cyber savvy.

The guide also gives older people an insight on online problems facing teenagers and children, who are often in the care of their

grandparents.

The booklet, written by Dave Donnellon, was designed to take the fear out of using the internet and instill confidence in more older people to go online.

“The issue of the internet came up quite significantly during meetings of the Louth Older People’s Forum which seeks to address and tackle issues facing the older generation,” said Louth Age Friendly County Co-ordinator Mary Deery.

Darren O’Brien produced a super round, which included three birdies, to win Sunday’s 14 Hole Single Stableford competition.

On a perfect day for golf, the 13 handicapper, shot an amazing 37pts for the 14 holes and was a clear winner by two points from Shane McGuinness (19) who had to settle for second overall.

Barry Cunningham (8), Michael Hamilton (15) and George Rogers (19) took the three category prizes with Peter Rogers (1) returning the best gross score for the second successive week.

O’Brien, who had 10 strokes to play with because of the reduced number of holes, got off

to a great start with a three point par at the first but handed it back when he double-bogeyed the next. However, successive three point pars at the third and fourth holes got him back in the groove and a two point par at the fifth was followed by a three point birdie at the par five sixth.

He then parred the next three holes for a further eight points to turn for home on 23pts. A two point par at the 10th and a two point bogey at the index two 11th brought him to 27 points with three holes to go and he then proceeded to burn off the field with a blistering finish.

O’Brien parred the par-five 12th for three points and then parred the par-three 13th for

another three points before birdieing the par four 18th for four points and signing for a remarkable 37pts.

in Brief Unaware of theft

A woman who gave two juveniles a lift in her car told Dundalk District Court that she was unaware that they were in possession of stolen items.

Melissa Connors (27) of 2 Merfield Court, Tallaght, Dublin, was driving a car that was stopped by Gardai on April 23, 2104, when the juveniles were found with goods worth €537.

Solicitor Eleanor Kelly stated that the front seat passenger in the car had been found not guilty in relation to the offence. She stated that Ms Connors had given the individuals a lift but was unaware of the stolen goods.

She added that the mother of three had travelled from Dublin to meet the case and had no previous convictions.

Judge John Coughlan struck the case out.

Stole Drink From Shop

A man who admitted stealing drink valued at €14.68 from Dunnes Stores, Ard Easmuinn, on September 15 had the case against him adjourned at Dundalk District Court.

George Donegan (28) of 400 Beechmount Drive, Cox’s Demesne, Dundalk, admitted two thefts on the day in question.

Barrister Ronan O’Carroll stated that his client had a history of difficulty with drugs and this came to a head with a serious case of self-harm. He added that he is currently receiving treatment.

Judge John Coughlan adjourned the case until March 28 to allow the defendant engage with Probation Services.

Man became angry outside court after being refused access to child

A man who was upset after he was refused access to his child assaulted the child’s mother as he was leaving court.

As a result Thomas McShane (31) of 35 Drive 2, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to the offence at Dundalk District Court where he was given the benefit of the Probation Act, but failed to have the case dismissed.

The injured party told the court that on March 16 last year, the defendant had been refused access to their child and was angry as a

result. On the way out of court he grabbed her by the shoulders and pushed her against a wall. She added that they were not on good terms.

Judge John Coughlan stated that he did not want to make the situation between the two parties any worse and that in view of the guilty plea he would apply the Probation Act. Ms Sands stated that Mr McShane is a football coach for juveniles and needs Garda vetting which is up for renewal soon and

St Vincent’s to stage Sister Act

ST Vincent’s have clearly developed a talent in the musical theatre, as they have been extremely successful in the past few years with musicals.

Last year’s production of “Billy Elliot” is a hard one to beat but this year’s Ty group are taking on the challenge and recreating one of the most “fabulous” musicals “Sister Act”.

and whether it is singing, acting, dancing, costumes, makeup or set design their talents can be put to use.

Ms O’Hagan and Ms Jones had the difficult task of selecting a cast, this is not an easy selection especially this year as all students auditioned for a specific role.

The cast was put together and chorus was chosen. A few members of the cast are Hannah Culligan, Cara Mckeever, Leona McCahill,

Morgan Kelledy, Aine Scott, Katie Farrell, and Holly Kieran.

The talented Sadbh Boylan earned the lead role of Deloris a lounge singer who found her place in a church with a bunch of singing nuns.

The club is run by Deloris’ boyfriend played by Gillian Fearon, who is also a well known mobster. Deloris accidentally walks in on her boyfriend executing his chauffeur “Ernie” played by Niamh Reilly.

As a result of this, Deloris is forced to take refuge in a church until the court date where she will testify.

The Reverend Mother played by Amy Dennis, objects to this but is soon won over by Monsignor O’Hara played

by Roisin O’Hanarahan.

Deloris then has to become a “nun” to fit in with the disguise.

Her journey is full of surprises, and bonding moments between Deloris and her fellow nuns.

Students at Ardee CS who took part in the Safe Pass programme

A group of senior students in Ardee Community School undertook the Safe Pass training Programme on Thursday January 25, under the guidance of tutor Seàn Harvey.

Many of these students hope to obtain work on construction sites in the future.

Safe Pass is a safety awareness training programme for construction workers. It is a one-day programme to enable them to work on construction sites without being a risk to themselves or others. Em-

ployers are required by law to ensure that employees on construction sites carry Safe Pass cards.

As a result, employers must ensure that all employees are properly trained.

The Safe Pass programme is operated and managed by SOLAS and aims to: Raise the standard of safety awareness in the construction industry and also to ensure that all construction site workers undergo basic health and safety awareness train-

ing with the view to making a positive contribution to the prevention of accidents and avoidance of health hazards The programme also helps maintain a register of construction site and local authority workers who have received such health and safety training, while it provides all Safe Pass participants with a Safe Pass registration card that will indicate that the holders have attended a formal course in health and safety awareness.

Rejuvenation plans available to view in Town Hall

Plans for the upcoming works which are designed to rejuvenate Clanbrassil Street and St Nicholas Quarter are now available to view in the Town Hall on Crowe Street.

Louth County Council have given notice of their intention to carry out works as part of their efforts to regenerate the northern end of the town.

St Nicholas Quarter is described in the plans as ‘an area generally along Clanbrassil

Street, Church Street, Bridge Street, Linenhall Street, Northgate Street and Fairgreen Road and at junctions with Market Street, Yorke Street, Patrick Street, John Street, the Laurels and Wolfe Tone Terrace.

However, it was announced just before Christmas that the planned €4m upgrade would have to be scaled back and would not now include Bridge St. Councillors were informed that work would now stop at St Nicholas Church.

On the back of that decision

a group of traders representing Bridge St. formed an alliance (Bridge Street Community and Traders Area Regeneration) to try and persuade the council not to omit them from the plans for rejuvenation. Those talks are currently ongoing.

The work proposed by the council includes the reconfiguration of the public area to include resurfaced granite footpaths, asphalt parking bays and improved carriageways.

There will also be seating between the Saint Nicholas Church

of Ireland and the Saint Nicholas Roman Catholic Church as well as improved pedestrian crossings at various intersections, decluttering and widening of all footpaths The one-way link between Linenhall Street and Bridge Street will be removed and southbound traffic will use the new T-junction formed in Bridge Street.

Development works also include the addition and removal of trees, the inclusion of new public lighting, new street furni-

ture and public art.

Louth County Council has undertaken Appropriate Assessment Screening, the details of which are available to the general public.

Plans and particulars of the proposed development may be inspected or purchased, at a fee not exceeding the reasonable cost of making a copy, from Tuesday 30th January 2018 until Monday 26th February 2018 (inclusive) at the offices of Louth County Council, Town Hall, Crowe Street, Dundalk,

Co. Louth, during public opening hours.

Louth Lotto players are punching above their weight Lotto players around Louth are amongst the luckiest in the country when it comes to picking up prizes with the Wee County ranked fifth out of the 26 counties listed by the National Lottery.

The Wee County are most definitely punching above their weight with a total of 76 jackpot winners since the Lotto began in 1988. Those 76 jackpot winners have won a combined total of €89,032,725 which equates to

the seventh highest total in the country.

The figures were released by the National Lottery ahead of their 30th anniversary which takes place in April. The very first Lotto draw took place in Ireland on the 16th of April 1988. The only counties with more jackpot winners than Louth are Dublin (572 winners), Cork (172), Galway (92) and Donegal (90).

According to National Lottery

Chief Executive Dermot Griffin the sales from Lotto have raised an impressive €2.9bn for good causes all over the country.

“The total amount from sales of Lotto tickets alone which has gone back to good causes throughout the country is a staggering €2.9bn, which has benefitted projects and organisations in the areas of health, sport welfare, education, arts and heritage.”

This past Wednesday night saw the Dundalk Snooker League enter week three of the new season with plenty of entertaining matches taking place on the evening.

In the first of the nights matches league leaders ‘Team Brown’ entertained ‘Team Black’ and it was the Blacks who started well with Alan Thompson getting one over rival David J McArdle.

Next up Steve McBride (Team Brown) took on Joe McEnaney (Team Black) and again it was the browns who opened up an early lead with the blacks fighting back late in the frame to seal it in what was a carbon copy of

the first game.

In the third singles match Ken Byrne (Blacks) defeated Mark Laverty to open up an unassailable 3-0 lead going into the doubles match.

In the evening’s second match, ‘Team Green’ recorded a 4-0 win over ‘Team Yellow’.

In the first match Justin McArdle defeated Brendan O’Hanlon while in the second match Maddy Hoey beat Tiernan Mallon.

The third game saw in the third Glen Duffy beat Stephan O’Hanlon to open a 3-0 lead going into the doubles, before the Greens completed a 4-0 win.

The final match of the evening saw Team Pink face Team Blue.

Up first in the final match of the night was Liam Johnston from ‘Team Blue’ defeated ‘Team Pink’s’ Micky Ralph.

In the second match, Keith Morris beat David Morris to level the scores on the night.

In the third match Dominic O’Connor (Team Pink) got the better of Paddy Hayes.

Joining Paddy at the baize for the doubles was Liam Johnston while joining Dominic was Gerry Rogers for what was a tight frame overall. Eventually it was Paddy who avenged his singles loss when he and Liam Johnston edged past O’Connor and Rogers to ensure the points were shared in a 2-2 draw.

Disqualified driver pleads guilty to further motoring offences A Dublin man who pleaded guilty to a number of motoring offences was sentenced to five months in prison.

James Farrell (35) of 37 Cherry Orchard Parade, Ballyfermot, Dublin, appeared at Dundalk District Court arising out of an incident on

A man who was involved in a dispute among Traveller families was fined €300 when he appeared at Dundalk District Court.

Kieran Martin Joyce (23) of 66 Rockfield Manor, Hoey’s Lane, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to threatening and abusive behaviour arising out of the incident on November 11 last. At 9.20am Gardai were called to a disturbance between two families at Woodland Park when Mr Joyce became threatening and was shouting obscenities.

Judge John Coughlan imposed a €300 fine on the defendant who didn’t appear in court.

The number of people out of work in Louth has declined by 17.4% in the last year according to Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick.

The Fine Gael TD was speaking following the announcement that the live register in Co. Louth has decreased by 1900 people.

Transition Year students lend support to Special Olympics

Fundraising is a huge part of St. Vincent’s and what they’re about.

Every year as part of the religion curriculum they do an action project when they take “action” and fundraise for a local charity. One group of students have decided to volunteer at Special Olympics meetings.

Two students every Tuesday and Saturday take two hours out and volunteer at either Aura Dundalk Leisure Centre or Blackrock Community Centre. This involves a variety of sports that the athletes play such as football, swimming and basketball. This is a great experience for both the athlete and the student as it is a time to have fun, make friends

This particular group of students have decided to fundraise by holding their very own teachers-v-students Olympics. They will participate in different games such as football against their teachers. They will sell tickets to come see it to raise money for the Special Olympics Club in Dundalk.

All round this is a well-planned and brilliant idea to fundraise and an excellent experience for students and athletes. The students plan to advertise this fundraiser all round the school in the hope that students will come to watch their teachers and support their fellow students.

Earlier this month, Brent Crude Oil prices peaked at over $70 a barrel before dropping slightly in recent days.

“We know that oil prices are one of the key factors in dictating what motorists pay at the pump, along with European wholesale prices and the Dollarto-Euro exchange rate.

Thankfully the strength of the Euro against the Dollar has helped ease some of the effect rising crude oil prices have on the cost of petrol and diesel, but we can’t count on this forever,” Faughnan added. “In the longerterm we will have to look closer to home for a solution to rising commuter costs and

particularly at the excessive taxes we place on both fuels. While motoring’s future is going to be electric, until we get to that point we have to ensure people can afford to commute to work, particularly in more rural areas where public transport options may not exist.”

According to the AA, an average motorists who drives 12,000 miles per year (19,200 km) at a fuel consumption rate of 30 miles per gallon (9.42 litres per 100 km) will use 150 litres of fuel per month.

At current prices that motorist will pay this €207.30 per month for petrol of which €129.91 is tax. Meanwhile, a motorist driving a diesel powered vehicle will spend €190.95 per month on fuel, of which €110.54 is tax.
