Beautiful Cavapoo, Puppies Arriving This Weekend

There was major drugs seizure in Dundalk on Tuesday as Gardaí intercepted a haulage vehicle which was carrying cannabis herb with an estimate street value of €3.2m.

Gardaí attached to the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB) intercepted a commercial haulage vehicle in Ballymascanlon, Dundalk, Co. Louth. Following a search of the vehicle cannabis herb with an estimated street value of €3.2 million was recovered.

The cannabis herb was concealed within a legitimate load of fresh vegetables.

Two males aged 57 and 42 from the UK and Northern Ireland were arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking and are currently detained at Dundalk Garda Station under the provisions of Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (drug trafficking) Act 1996.

This operation is part of ongoing joint investigations being conducted by the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB) and the National Crime Agency (NCA) of the UK under the auspices of the Cross Border Joint Agency Task Force (CBJATF) targeting cross border organised criminal activity.

Assistant Commissioner John O’Driscoll of Special Crime Operations said “This very significant seizure of drugs is yet another success arising from ongoing cooperation between the Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau and the UK’s National Crime Agency as we jointly protect our communities from

drug trafficking” Sinn Féin general election candidate for Louth Cllr Ruairí Ó Murchú has commended the National Drugs and Organised Crime Unit on this Tuesday’s arrest of two men and seizure of cannabis worth over €3 million.

Councillor Ó Murchú, who is Chairperson of Louth Drug and Alcohol Forum, said; “This is a seizure of a huge volume of illicit drugs which would have made their way into the local supply chain.

“The removal of these drugs and the arrest of two individuals is extremely welcome news and represents a highly successful operation by An Garda Síochána,” stated Ruairí.

History beckons for Vinny Perth’s all conquering Dundalk side this Sunday as they look to complete an historic treble against Shamrock Rovers in the Aviva stadium this Sunday. The club have had plenty of success in their long and storied history but the treble has always eluded them and the recently crowned league and FAI cup winners have a chance to put that right against arch rivals Shamrock Rovers this weekend.

Last Friday night saw skipper Brian Gartland lift the league trophy but celebrations afterwards were low key as the team began preparations for the cup final this weekend. The Aviva stadium has almost been like a second home for Lilywhite supporters over the last number of years and this will be the club’s fifth year in a row playing in the FAI cup final. All of those finals were against Cork City with both clubs winning two finals apiece.

securing a treble were dealt a blow on Tuesday evening when it was revealed that key midfielder Chris Shields would not take any part in the final due to suspension.

Shields picked up a yellow card against Cork City two weeks ago which was his eighth of the season and although the club appealed the

club failed to overturn the decision.

Meanwhile the club have called on supporters to be their twelfth man in the Aviva and help them achieve their goal of treble glory.

Dundalk firm shortlisted for European award

Dundalk FC’s Brian Gartland, community officer Liam Burns and Ronan Murray with Jason Donnelly, Sean Connolly, Ryan McEneaney and Liam Dorian The on-going work being done by Fyffes in helping to combat childhood obesity through its fitness-based ‘Fit Squad’ initiative continues to gain recognition.

The Dundalk-based Irish fruit importer has been named as one of 62 finalists shortlisted from seven countries for this year’s IMC European Awards for Integrated Marketing Communications.

All winners in their national competitions, the finalists were selected by a panel of almost 40 leading industry professionals across Europe followed by a jury of Integrated

Marketing Communications Council members in Brussels recently. This year’s overall winners will be announced in December.

Earlier this year, Fyffes ‘Fit Squad’ was awarded the top honour for ‘Best Use of Experiential Marketing Within A Budget of €30,000’ at the annual APMC Awards, hosted by the representative body for organisations involved in the promotional marketing industry in Ireland.

Tom Dalton – the main purpose of each unique 40-minute session is to demonstrate to young people in schools and clubs throughout the country how they can increase their physical activity.

Since its inception last year, Fyffes ‘Fit Squad’ initiative has visited some 145 schools and seen over 14,000 children participate in 290 interactive sessions across 29 counties throughout Ireland, North and South.

HSE reverse decision to close Sruthan House

Local politicians have welcomed the news that Sruthan House will remain open after the HSE reversed its original decision to close it. Sruthan House which is a facility run by the HSE in partnership with the Irish Wheelchair Association had provided a respite/holiday service for adults with physical and sensory disabilities for the past 23 years. There was widespread anger and condemnation locally when the HSE announced that the facility was to close.

Sinn Féin TD Imelda Munster welcomed the decision saying there was no justification whatsoever for its proposed closure. this week by the HSE that Sruthán House in Dundalk will remain open, following a consultation carried out by the head of Social Care, Jude O’Neill, and service users.

Deputy Munster said: “When I was first contacted by service users and their families, after they received letters from the HSE suggesting they could go to nursing homes or far-away facilities in Roscommon and other places, I raised the issue straight away with Minister for Disabilities, Finian McGrath.

“There was no justification whatsoever for its proposed closure so Wednesday’s news

from the HSE, that they are going to reverse their decision and Sruthán House will remain open, is fantastic.

“I want to publicly pay tribute to all the service users and their families for their perseverance and determination in this campaign, which brought about the HSE decision to keep Sruthán House open”.

Fianna Fáil TD Declan Breathnach also welcomed the fact that Sruthán House will remain open stating that ‘it is a victory for the services users and families’.

“I’m delighted for all the users of Sruthán House and their families that Minister Harris and McGrath have now reversed the decision to close the service. It was unbelievable that people were originally told they would have to travel to Sligo, Roscommon and Dublin to avail of the same services.”

“In July asked Minister McGrath in the Dáil why Sruthán House was to close when other respite services were opening in other parts of the country.

The campaign to save Sruthán House ultimately led to the decision to be deferred and now finally to be reversed.”

Independent TD Peter Fitzpatrick descrbed tehnews as ‘fantastic’ while calling for a

steering group to be established to help improve the service going forward.

“I am delighted that following the review carried out Struthan House Respite will remain open. As an active member of Louth HSE Disability Forum she was invited to Darver to hear Jude O’Neill HSE CH08 Social Care Area Manager make the announcement.

She concluded by saying “Struthan House is 23years old and is the only respite house for people with physical or sensory disability in Louth so it’s important it evolves and reaches its potential for all who need it in the years to come.”

Memorial Plaque unveiled in honour of Willie Duffy

Family and friends of the late Willie Duffy gathered in the bright sunshine on Tuesday morning at the Demesne where Cllr John McGahon dedicated a memorial plaque on a public bench to the memory of the former Dundalk Tidy Towns chairman.

Willie was hugely passionate about his hometown and worked tirelessly alongside his Dundalk Tidy Towns colleagues to help improve Dundalk and it’s environs.

The event will be attended by members of his family, members of Louth Co Council and the Municipal District of Dundalk, members of the

Dundalk Tidy Towns Group and representatives of the Management and Staff of Louth County Council who worked with him over many years.

Cllr John McGahon spoke at the event and spoke of the high regard Willie was held in around Dundalk.

“Willie was truly a lovely individual who cared deeply about Dundalk and who worked tirelessly to improve it every single day. He made many significant contributions to the town in his role as Tidy Towns chairman and was well loved and respected by everybody he came

across. This plaque is dedicated in his honour and we are delighted to see Willie’s wife Veronica and his family here today. It is an honour for myself and my municipal colleagues to recognise the contribution Willie made to Dundalk and his grandchildren who are here today can tell their friends that their grandads name is on this bench,” noted John.

Meanwhile Helen Byrne who took over as Dundalk Tidy Towns chairperson following Willie’s death in 2017 spoke warmly about her former friend and his love for the town.

“Willie absolutely adored this town and he worked tirelessly to help improve the place. He would go out of his way to get funding for various projects and would go out with the begging bowl to help ensure things got done.

He had a fierce determination and the people of this town should be proud of all he done for Dundalk. The Demesne in particular was his baby and he had great plans on how to improve this area so I think it is especially apt that he has a plaque dedicated to him here. Award for Lions Club weekly radio programme

Celebrations begin in the Dundalk FC dressing room following the league trophy presentation in Oriel Park on Friday evening. This was the club’s 14th league title.

Dundalk Lions Club have received an award from Community Radio Ireland for their weekly radio programme – ‘Dundalk Lions At Your Service’ – which is broadcast every Thursday from 8 to 9 pm on Dundalk FM. The programme consists of interviews, local news and music and is running since 2015 with a team of Lions who rotate as presenters.

The programme is produced each

week by Hugh McKitterick who prepares the running order and is ably assisted by David Larkin who chooses the music. A different theme is chosen each week for the programme by Pat Byrne.

Gerry Campbell, John Hennessy, Tom Donaghy and Tadhg O’Sullivan take turns to interview a guest and read from the local newspapers – a service provided especially for the visually impaired listeners.

LSPCA fundraiser night

LSPCA committee members Cait Monagher, Ollie Morgan and Brendan Byrne Morgan with Enzo the dog.

An eclectic line-up of musicians have been announced to play at the upcoming ‘Artists for Animals’ concert in aid of the Louth Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The concert will take place in the Lisdoo Bar and Restaurant on the 15th of November and will include local acts such as the award-winning duo of Zoe Conway and her husband John McIntyre, the Oriel Traditional Orchestra, Jim Corr as well as fiddle player Liam Monagher.

All money raised on the evening will go towards repairs

at the LSPCA’s shelter at Walterstown which was vandalised back in August. Substantial damage was caused during the break in including the office door being smashed in, lights pulled off walls, curtains pulled down and stolen and bleach and vinegar poured all over the mobile unit. A brand new cctv system was also stolen during the incident.

The LSPCA committee have been busy fundraising to try and repair all the damage and their ‘Artists for Animals’ evening is their main event to try and help restore the shelter to its previous

glory. As well as the brilliant line up of music there will also be a raffle on the evening with some fantastic prizes and the evening will end with Dundalk FM dj Karl Collins spinning some tunes into the early hours. All the acts on the evening are given up their time for free and all are welcome to support a very worthy cause.

Tickets cost €20 on sale in Avenue Veterinary Hospital, The Pet Centre, Linenhall St, Prize Pets, Riverlane, Ardee Petsupplies & O’Dowd Veterinary. Tickets are also available at the door on the night which starts at 8pm.

Success for Dundalk trio at Connaught Tennis Open There was plenty of local success for Dundalk tennis players this week at the Connaught Tennis Open in Castlebar with Zara Burns, Freddie Murray and Emilie Burns all returning home with winners trophies.

First up to the winners podium was Zara Burns (left) who won the girls U14 Open defeating Realtin Stara 7/6 6/4. Then the talented Freddy Murray swept to a comfortable straight sets win in the boys U18 open defeating Dylan Leeman 61 62. Finally, Emily OBeirne showed her class as she surged clear during the second set to complete a 7/5 6/1 victory over Lydia Brennan to win the U12 Girls Open.

parking fines Dundalk Councillor John McGahon has called on Louth County Council to quash any parking tickets people received in areas where the Pay Parking signage was worn out or faded.

Speaking at the October Meeting of Louth County Council, Cllr. McGahon said.

“I have had a lot of people get in contact with me in recent months about having received parking tickets in areas which were not clearly marked as pay parking zones due to a lack of visible signage.

“For example, I had one individual who received a ticket where the Pay Parking road markings was so faded that you could barely see it. I had another individual who got a ticket and appealed it based on the fact that the signage was on the street was so faded by the weather that it had turned completely white. We are talking about Pay Parking Signage that is nearly ten years old and has become so worn that it is barely visible.

“Equally, I’m talking about these fines been issued on streets like Park Drive, Park Villas,

Broughton Street, compared to a busy street like Park Street where everyone knows it’s pay parking. But my real issue is where these individuals have appealed, the fines have still been upheld, despite photographic evidence of the decayed signage being submitted.

I firmly believe that Louth County Council should quash any fines people received in areas where there is worn out or barely visible signage.

Council declares climate emergency

Cllr Antóin Watters declares climate emergency at monthly Louth Council meeting

At this month’s County Council meeting, Sinn Fein’s Antóin Watters tabled a motion asking that Louth declare a biodiversity and climate change emergency and received cross-party support with the Green Party adding that we needed to be ambitious in our targets to address the issue.

Cllr Watters said it is imperative that Louth County Council take the lead on this issue and that he welcomed the cross party support on this.

“It is up to us to ensure we protect the future of our planet for our children and grandchildren. Ireland has failed to meet

its Greenhouse Gas targets set by the EU for the third year in a row. We must refocus our efforts towards addressing this issue and if we were all to make small changes to our daily life, it will have an impact, he stated” European Commission Director-General for Climate Action Mauro Petriccione, while visiting Ireland in May of this year, described climate emergency declarations as ‘crucial’ in the process of addressing climate change.

Ireland became the second country to declare a climate emergency that month.

“While the national declara-

tion is very welcome, we need to also be aware that it is an emergency and should not be left solely up to the government.

Their solution was to slap a Carbon Tax on the people who were least guilty of pollution. This is urgent, this is an emergency and it is up to you, me and our local communities to address it in practical ways.”

Louth County Council responded to the motion saying: “The Climate Adaptation Strategy has been recently adopted

by Louth County Council. The council will now progress to implement the actions in the plan.”

Gaels attract new blood The increasing popularity of Ladies Football was underlined once again last week when Dundalk Gaels saw over 100 players sign up on registration night.

The girls will now represent the club from Nursery level up to U-18 and all involved with the Gaels are delighted with the response.

Two young girls, Keelin Lambert and Sarah McDonnell, sold a dream to the committee of Dundalk Gaels GFC earlier in the year, and subsequently an LGFA committee was set up within the club.

On Thursday last, after months of hard work and planning, that dream went a long way to becoming a reality.

The LGFA committee has been working tirelessly behind the scenes and will continue to do so to push the club on and have teams competing at every age group and hopefully an adult team in time.

The committee expressed a special word of thanks to the Louth LGFA, especially Chairperson Liam O’Neill and secretary Angela

O’Neill for all there help during the process of forming the LGFA structure of the club.

Huge thanks also to Emily Norton and Kate Flood from Louth LGFA for being there inspiring our future stars, like they have been doing over many years for girls all over the county.

Following their victory in the All-Ireland Junior Final, the girls brought the trophy with them for the registration night.

Dundalk Gaels LGFA coaching officer Ciaran Culligan expressed his delight with the initiative.

“It’s a very exciting chapter in the club’s history and something that’s great to be a part of. I have some wonderful memories of my time playing for the Gaels and meeting people I would regard as friends for life. Having two daughters myself, I’m delighted they will get the same opportunities as I had growing up.

“It’s very important we encourage the benefits of sport to both girls and boys, I’m very proud that the club has embraced the LGFA structure to cater for the girls in the community. I would personally like to thank John Boyle Louth LGFA development officer, for all his help, en-

couragement and advice during the process,” continued Ciaran.

“When the committee formed the one thing we were clear on was that everything had to be done correctly with LGFA guidelines.

John was instrumental in helping with the safegaurding, coaching courses and garda vetting procedures.

“As a community club we feel its vital to be part of the community and over the past couple of weeks we have been coaching in the St Malachys Infants school with the first class students and hope to start a programme of coaching in the St Malachys Girls school before christmas, promoting Gaelic football and Dundalk Gaels.

“Thanks to principals Ms McCarthy and Ms Galligan for been so welcoming with this. Finally to all the girls that have signed we look forward to welcoming you when training starts in January,” he added.

County Council supports school secretaries’ campaign Sinn Féin councillor Ruairí Ó Murchú has successfully brought a motion to Louth County Council’s October meeting calling on the Government and the Minister for Education to address employment issues affecting school secretaries.

Councillor Ó Murchú said that on September 20th, secretaries and caretakers at 250 schools across the state, including schools in Dundalk, went on strike following the collapse of talks between their union Fórsa, school patrons and the Department of Education and Skills.

“This strike came about due to the fact that across the State’s 3,500 school secretaries, only a few hundred are paid directly from the Department of Education.

“The majority are paid through the ancillary grant, which is awarded to schools by the Department annu-

ally. The Department does not recognise these secretaries as its employees.

“This means that secretaries paid through the grant can earn as little as €12,500 a year, with their hours per week decided based on how big a grant the Department awards to the school.

“This compares with salaries of between €24,000 and €44,000 for those paid directly by the Department,” stated Cllr Ó Murchú.

“In addition, departmentally employed

secretaries enjoy the status and benefits of public servants, while those employed by individual schools are on temporary contracts, low pay, and have to sign-on during school holidays.

“This is grossly unfair and places both these secretaries and the schools they work in, in an invidious position.

“Earlier this month there was a breakthrough for the secretaries when the Education Minister Joe McHugh stated in the Dáil that the Government would participate in Workplace talks.

“I know that school secretaries are vital to the school community and I support them their campaign to have their contribution recognized.

“I am pleased that all councillors on Louth County Council have publically supported their campaign as well,” he added.

Calls for reverse vending machine

Sinn Fein Councillor Antóin Watters has called on Louth County Council to introduce a pilot scheme for the reverse vending machine following the introduction of a similar scheme in Carrickmacross last month.

Cllr Watters said “Carrickmacross Tidy Towns have taken the lead with a proactive approach to deal with single use plastics. The reverse vending machine encourages all ages to reduce plastic pollution using the incentive of a 10 cent voucher per bottle recycled.”

“The Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment are currently undertaking a review to assess the viability of the machine and I welcome the response from Louth County Council.

Paddy to assume role of chairman in DkIT

Paddy Malone will become the Chairman of DkIT’s governing body this December subject to approval by the Oireachtas.

Paddy, a chartered accountant with Malone and Co. on Clanbrassil Street is well known around Dundalk for his work with the Dundalk Chamber of Commerce.

He was heavily involved in the recent M1 Corridor project which aims to drive international investment into this region by highlighting the many advantages Co. Louth has over both Dublin and Belfast.

TINNITUS New Louth clinic providing proven treatment

"The simplest way to explain tinnitus and how to manage it is through the piano example", Frank explains. He finds the frequencies - the keys on the piano you aren't hearing - and superimposes real sounds tailored to each individual's needs. Using international best practice and technology, the treatment focused on hearing bands, is successful in more than 70% of tinnitus cases Frank has treated. The advances in tinnitus treatment in the last decade are such that Frank has encountered only a handful of instances where a tinnitus patient gets little help.

The clocks went back last Sunday and the Winter golf season began with the early morning starters well wrapped up before the temperatures rose to make it a perfect golfing day for most of the field.

Teeing off just after noon, Cathal Muckian took full advantage of the conditions to win the Singles Stableford competition with a fine score of 31pts.

But the 11 handicapper needed a birdie on the last to join Colin Roche (5) on 31pts and after the countback failed to separate them on the last nine and last six holes played it was Muckian’s nine points

on the final three holes, which came courtesy of three consecutive three point scores, which proved decisive.

Roche had to settle for the Category 1 prize while one of the early starters, Pat McGuinness (15), zoomed around the course in an impressive 30pts to take Category 2 with Jimmy O’Connor (19) claiming Category 3 with the same total. Roche also claimed the best gross with 27pts.

Brian Crombie (20) was a clear winner of last Wednesday’s Open Singles Stableford as he shot 39pts to beat Connor McCaughey (5) by four points.

Murphy finished fifth and sixth respectively at the Irish Intervarsity Championship in St Anne’s last week. Mackin finished four shots behind the winner, UCD’s Charlie Denvir, after rounds of 76, 70, 73 left him on six over while Murphy was a shot behind his Dundalk and Maynooth University teammate on seven over after rounds of 76, 73 and 71.

Caolan Rafferty was part of a six-man Irish team that was beaten by one point by the Metropolitan Golf Association in the annual Carey Cup match which was played in Arcola Country Club in New Jersey last week.

On Day 1 he birdied the last hole in the fourball to earn himself and partner Conor Purcell a half and in the afternoon foursomes the same pairing were one up with eight to play but lost four consecutive holes from the 13th to birdie as their American opponents came from behind to win 3&2.

A similar fate befell Rafferty in the singles on Day 2 when he was beaten 6&4 by Thomas LaMorte. Rafferty was two up after four but then got blown away as the American fired in eight birdies over the next ten holes to win on the 14th.

Shoe Box Appeal Community activist Eugene Garvey is calling for people in Dundalk to help the homeless this year by providing a shoebox of essentials.

Mr Garvey, who has worked with a number of homeless support groups in the past, was contacted by friends who work in a local Company who are organising the Shoebox Appeal.

“I have arranged two drop-off points in Dundalk and am calling on businesses, schools, colleges, communities and individuals to get involved and support the 10,338 homeless people in our State (of which 3,848 are children).

“Does your office do a Kris Kindle? How about donating a shoebox for the same price and really bring a smile to someone’s face over the festive season? Buy an extra gift this year and donate it, it will make a big difference to someone.”

Dundalk-based organisation, Family Addiction Support Network (FASN) have won a major national award for their work with families of those in addiction.

The group, headed up by Gwen and Jackie McKenna, were presented the accolade at the Spark Change Sustainability Awards which took place recently at Dublin Castle.

The Wheel, Trinity College Dublin and the Environmental Protection Agency announced the shortlist for the inaugural Spark Change Sustainability Awards earlier this year and FASN were nominated in four categories.

The aim of the Spark Change Awards is to celebrate the people and groups working across Ireland to make to make their communities socially, environmentally and economically sustainable.

project/group that makes the most innovative and impactful effort to ensure that excluded groups become part of the Sustainable Development Goals, set by the United Nations, and decision making in their community or at international levels.

Jackie, who attended the awards with a group of volun-

teers and family members from FASN, said the organisation was thrilled to have won at the inaugural award.

She said: “We are thrilled that FASN was recognised for our efforts to help families in the North East and recognised as the voice of families impacted by substance misuse”.

Cllr McGahon calls to individuals on housing list Dundalk Councillor John McGahon has called on Louth County Council to reinstate individual’s time on the housing list when they have discovered that they have been removed.

Speaking at the October Meeting of Louth County Council, Cllr. McGahon said

it is vital that Louth County Council maintain accurate records of who wants to be on the social housing list and it is the responsibility of the individual to inform the council of an issue like a change of address.

“In recent years, the council

writes out to everyone on the Housing List and asks them to reply back within a certain time period to say they would still like to be on the list. If they don’t reply within the timeframe they are then removed.

“However, many people discover that while they thought

they were on the list, they had actually been removed for failure to reply back to the council. There is an appeal process, but it is rarely successful and I believe the council need to take into account that where an individual realises they have been removed, they should be

allowed back on to the list with their time included. At present, they are allowed back on the list but go straight to the back of the queue and this is the issue that I find to be deeply unfair.

“At present, it can take eight to ten years on the council’s

housing list. Imagine if an individual was on the list for eight years, discovered they are removed and are told to go to the back of the queue. Given the current waiting times, you are essentially condemning them to another decade on the list,” stated Cllr McGahon.

Work from home motion passed Local Fianna Fáil councillor John Sheridan has welcomed the passing of his motion at Louth County Council’s monthly meeting seeking for Louth to become a leader on the provision of shared work spaces and eHubs as an alternative to commuting.

“I welcome the passing of the motion and that colleagues described it as a very progressive suggestion. During the election, I met so many people who are commuting daily to office jobs in Dublin and that is why I tabled this motion. I see work from home initiatives and eHubs as a serious and realistic alternative for those commuters.”

Vital checks to get your car winter ready 1. Check your tyre pressure and tyre depth It is important to know the correct tyre pressure for your car and check them at least every two weeks using a good-quality gauge or garage airline. While the minimum legal requirement for tyre thread depth is 1.6mm in Ireland, AA Rescue recommends replacing your tyre when the thread depth falls below 3mm. It also advises drivers to pay particular attention to their tyre pressure as cold weather can cause it to drop.

If there is one particular tyre that you find yourself having to top-up regularly, it may have a slow puncture. Remember to check your spare tyre too!

2. Ensure your battery is working correctly A flat battery was the most common cause of a winter breakdown in 2016. Batteries generally should be replaced every five years – ensuring these are replaced before it reaches its life expectancy could save a great deal of inconvenience and time at the side of the road. If your car is struggling to start it’s usually a sign that the battery is weak. That will certainly catch you out when weather is colder as batteries have to work harder in low temperatures.

3. Check your coolant and antifreeze It’s important to check that you have the right amount of coolant, and if necessary top it up with the correct type of antifreeze. Make sure that you use the appropriate antifreeze that is recommended by your car’s manufacturer. See our advice on how to check and top up your coolant correctly here.

4. Carry a toolkit & safety kit Use your handbook to locate the basic toolkit

for your car; it should contain a jack and wheel removal tools at least. Familiarise yourself with the jacking points used to lift the car safely.

If locking wheel nuts are fitted on your car make sure that the toolkit includes the key or removal tool.

Also prepare an in-car safety kit to ensure you’re equipped for all winter driving conditions. This should include a de-icer and scraper, shovel, demisting cloth, jump leads, torch, necessary medication, warning triangle, AA Membership card, sand/ salt or other traction aid and so on.

5. Check the engine oil level Check the engine oil dipstick at least every fortnight and before any long journey. Have the oil and filter changed at recommended service intervals using oil of the correct specification.

High oil consumption can indicate engine problems, in that case seek assistance.

6. Check your water level and top up if necessary It’s important to check your water level regularly and top it up as necessary – but only when the engine is cold. Locate the coolant reservoir and check that the water level is between the min and max markings. If it has fallen below the minimum, top it up with tap water as required.

7. Make sure your wiper blades are not worn It is important to check your wiper blades and replace them when necessary to ensure you have a clear view of the road. Wiper blades wear down over time and smear the windscreen if they become worn. The average set of wipers blades should last about a year, so if yours is due an upgrade, now is a good time to have them replaced.

8. Check your windcreen wash is at the correct level Check your windscreen wash and top up

regularly – it’s a legal requirement that the system works. Use a good screenwash additive through summer and winter – water alone won’t clear oily road grime and freezes more readily in winter.

9. Check for any damage on your windscreen Check regularly for stone damage as this can impair vision or distract attention. Minor chips can grow and crack the glass but many can be repaired by a windscreen specialist.

The glow of winter’s low sun can be dazzling and dangerous to drive in when your windscreen is smeared and dirty. So make sure to give your windscreen a good clean inside and out before driving.

10. Keep car lights clean and working See and be seen. Keep all lights clean and working – don’t forget indicators, brake and fog lights. In bad weather wipe them over with a damp cloth during driving breaks.

11. Check power steering fluid level Ensure that the fluid reservoir is checked at every service, and check it yourself once a month. Top up only using the correct hydraulic fluid as advised in the car handbook.

12. Check bodywork is in good condition Deal promptly with damage to bodywork to prevent rust setting in. Many cars have extended bodywork warranty schemes, which may require annual inspection at the dealer.

Check that any previous owner has kept records up to date.

13. Prevent car locks and door seals from freezing A thin coat of polish or Vaseline on rubber door seals can stop doors freezing shut – and a squirt of WD-40 can do the same for door locks.
