SECONDARY schools around Dundalk are currently in negotiations with Bus Eireann with regards to proposed changes to the school timetable for the 2017/18.

Earlier this year the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Unit of the Department of Education (DES) and Skills issues DES Circular Letter 0015/2017 notifying schools that they would need to make changes to accommodate the New Junior Cycle from September 2017.

The event is being put on by Patsy Rogers and Mary Keenan and the candlelight cabaret dancing will feature a host of fantastic artists including: Candlelight Caberet Dancing featuring a fantastic line up of artists including: Keith & Lorraine McDonald, The Conquerors Showband, Gerry Guthrie, Frankie McDonald, Caitlin,

The elected representatives were thanked for being present and their support for the campaign was welcomed.

The chairman outlined the history of the site since it was sold by the Town Council in 2005 and gave the background to and reason for the present campaign.

He also mentioned that legal advice had been obtained on how proceed if forced to go down that route.

Kay Corbett and her husband Desie will be directly affected by the location of the new sub-station as it will be adjoined to their back wall. According to Kay it is not just the fact that they will be waking up to see an eyesore in their backyard each day that is bothering them.

It is the more important issue of health for themselves, their neighbours, family and friends which is the burning issue.

“We have had several interactions with the project management on this matter but their response is that we had the opportunity to object when the plans were on public display before permission was granted, and that we had failed to do so.,” explained Kay. Therefore the plans cannot

be changed by moving the substation.

“We cannot understand why on a huge site like this the substation has to be located on the only tiny section that adjoins our homes.

“As we have pointed out to the project management, planners must have regard to the protection of the health of citizens. Our fears on the Electro Magnetic Field emissions and the potential dangers to our health from these have not been listened to

by Louth County Council and they don’t seem to be prepared to make any compromises”, continued Kay. “It just seems crazy to us that they won’t consider moving the sub-station to another part of the site. The site has a perimeter of about 1000 metres and there are at least two other locations well away from our houses which would be more suitable an area for the sub-station to be built.

The building will be 8.3 metres tall from base to roof and will be just metres from our kitchen”, she stated.

As part of the Association of Irish Musical Societies awards scheme, an adjudicator attends every amateur musical in the country from September to May before making their shortlist of nominations which was announced at the AIMS choral festival in New Ross on Sunday last.

Marie has been nominated along with two others in the Best Actress Category and the awards ceremony will take place at a glittering gala function in the INEC Gleneagle in Killarney on Saturday June 17. A contingent from

Dundalk Musical Society will travel to support Marie and will be hoping to bring the silverware home.

rently in rehearsal for their next production “Me and My Girl” the hilarious musical comedy which will take place in October.

Grow music will hold their spring recital in An Tain Arts Centre on June 4. Grow Music are a group of professional musicians dedicated to encouraging children to grow their love and understanding of musicianship, performance

and composing their own musical art.

The music which the children have learnt over the past year will be performed on June 4 and everybody is welcome to come along.

The concert begins at 3pm and tickets can be

Students honour local charity work Week to remember

The class of 1 Green in Dundalk Grammar School welcomed the representatives of seven charities, and their parents, to the school’s Harper Building on Thursday afternoon May 18 for an event to celebrate the work they have put in to date to their CSPE Action Projects.

Man stole two packets of cigarettes A man who stole two packets of cigarettes from a shop was allowed to preserve his clean record after he paid €500 to charity.

Adrian Sava of 20 Woodview Tce, Dundalk, admitted taking the

goods which were valued at €22.60 from Dunnes Stores, The Marshes, on March 8 this year. The 33-yearold was stopped by security and the goods were returned.

Solicitor, Barry Callan, stated that

his client was originally from Romania and married with two children.

He worked part-time in a car wash and was of limited means.

Mr Sava paid €300 and agreed to forfeit his bail of £200stg.

Gareth Halpin has had a week to remember and it culminated with him lifting the House Committee Cup on Sunday with a six-under par score of 66.

Halpin started the week as a 16 handicapper but lost a shot on Wednesday when he shot 40pts to take second place in Category 2 of the weekly Open Singles Stableford competition.

On Sunday, playing off his new handicap of 15, he showed he is in a rich vein of form to beat Eoin Murphy, another in-form player by one shot. Seventeen-yearold Murphy, now off one, continued his march towards scratch by shooting a super 68 gross for a nett score of 67 and managed to edge out club captain Michael Coburn and Brian Mernagh for second overall.

Coburn (8) took the Category 1 prize with Mernagh (13) taking Category 2 and Jim Deary (20) was the Category 3 winner. With Murphy finishing second overall, the gross prize went to Aaron Grant (+1) for his two under par 70.

Patrick McEntaggart (17)

won Wednesday’s competition with a super score of 45pts which was four clear of the field. Mark Gorham (5) won the Gross Prize with 33pts.

The Time Sheet for the June Bank holiday competitions went live on Monday evening at 7pm. The morning competition will be a Singles Stableford event while there will be a two person team event in the afternoon.

The Barton Cup team were beaten 3-2 by Ardee in the second round of the Barton Cup but the Fred Daly Cup team are into the Leinster semi-final after a thrilling win against Ardee. With Josh Mackin having won his match, Eoin Murphy had a putt on 18 for a half to send Dundalk into the last four.

But he could only watch in horror as the ball horseshoed the hole and landed back at his feet. With Sean Laverty four down with five to play, Dundalk looked dead and buried but Laverty rose to the challenge and won each of the remaining holes for a sensational victory to earn Dundalk a shot at The Island in the next round.

Eric takes on trek for Fighting Blindness Local fundraiser Eric Beggs is hoping that this year’s Cooley Mountain Trek can match last

and has raised thousands of euro thanks to various charity events such as church gate collections, quizzes and sponsored walks. The Cooley Mountain Trek is now in its fifth year and Eric is delighted to be able to raise some money for a charity which is close to his heart.

The Lisdoo Road man was diagnosed with a retinal degenerative condition called retinitis pigmentosa (RP) which unfortunately can’t be cured. Eric first started having difficulties with his sight in his early 20s and it has progressed to the stage that now in his 60s he is completely blind. He has been a keen supporter of the charity ‘Fighting Blindness and is a huge admirer of the work they do around the country.

“They are doing marvellous work in fighting blindness and I am absolutely convinced that they will have a treatment and cure for blindness in the very near future. They are making huge leaps forward all the time and helping so many people who have

difficulties with their sight”, explained Eric.

“Although it’s too late to help me I am determined to make sure that I can do as much as I can to ensure there is a cure for younger people who have sight difficulties which is why I organised the Cooley Mountain Trek. I have to say that people in Dundalk have been wonderful since I began this fundraiser and I thank every one of them who have supported me

over the years. I’d like to thank all the sponsors and everybody who helped me out as well.

The Lisdoo especially, have been a great help and have always accommodated me when needed”, he added.

This year’s Cooley Mountain Trek will take place on Sunday July 2 with the 10km walk starting at 11am (for more experienced walkers) and the 5km walk starting at midday.

The route is a looped

walk which begins at the Lumpers in Ravensdale. A free bus will leave Dundalk at the Lisdoo car park (Newry side) at 10:30 for the 11am walk and 11:30 for the 12pm walk.

Registration is €20 and includes refreshments and entertainment after the event.

Failed to have drink drive charge dismissed A woman who pleaded not guilty to a drink driving charge was banned from the road for three years after being convicted at Dundalk District Court.

Samantha Richardson of Whitestown, Greenore, failed in an attempt to have the case against her dismissed and was also fined €300.

However, she was successful in getting a dangerous driving charge dismissed after it was successfully argued that no evidence was given for the offence and the address that appeared on the charge sheet.

The court heard that on March 26 Gardai on patrol were informed of the possibility of a drink driver and soon after observed a vehicle matching the description on the Bellurgan Road.

The Gardai followed the car and observed it driving in an erratic manner and swerving on the road. They signalled the car to stop and it did so near the Ballymascanlon Roundabout.

However, when officers got out of their car, the defendant drove off.

The car failed to stop at the roundabout and forced other drivers to take evasive action.

The defendant drove towards town but turned back at the Red Cow roundabout and again failed to stop at the Ballymascanlon roundabout before

driving on the old Newry Road in an erratic manner.

The car stopped at Feede Cross where the defendant was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. At Dundalk Garda Station she failed to provide a urine sample but a blood sample illustrated that she was over the legal limit for driving.

The defence barrister argued that Section 15 certificate which is signed by the doctor who takes the blood sample was not submitted in evidence. Insp Martin Beggy stated that this had been submitted and that the defence had been supplied with a copy.

Judge John Coughlan rejected the submission and stated that the evidence had been given.

Judge Coughlan was told that Ms Richardson had a previous for drink driving in 2010 but was not banned at the time of this offence. The 39-year-old mother of three is currently studying for a Masters in adolescent psychology.

The dangerous driving charge was dismissed after the defence barrister argued that the charge related to an offence at Feede Cross, but that he only evidence in relation to this location was that the car had stopped there.

Judge Coughlan accepted the submission and dismissed the charge.

50 complaints from Louth to children’s ombudsman The Ombudsman for Children Office’s Annual Report 2016, launched

by Ombudsman for Children, Dr Niall Muldoon showed that 50 of 1,682 complaints received came from Louth.

“In 2016 there was another rise in the number of complaints received by the Ombudsman for Children’s Office (OCO). 50 of the 1,682 complaints were made by children, or on behalf

of children, in County Louth. Each of these complaints relates to at least one child.

“Most of the complaints we receive are from Dublin but we want children, families and anyone who works with children to know that anyone can make a complaint to my Office if they are not happy about a service being provided for a child.

tor in 46% of the complaints. This is to be expected considering the amount of time spent by young people in education settings. The majority of these complaints related to specifically to schools. We received many complaints about the management of peer bullying in schools, and found that social media is a particular challenge for parents, students and teachers”, he said.

Local charity Crosscause is celebrating its tenth birthday of the day care centre in Romania this week and have thanked the people of Dundalk for all their support over the past decade.

Crosscause was founded in 2003 by a group of local volunteers who were determined to help the underprivileged people of Romania. Four years later a day care centre (named Casa Bridget) was built by the charity in Nicoresti, in the south east of Romania, to help children and adults who had previously been living in appalling conditions in state orphanages.

Qualified social assistants as well as nurses and physiotherapists take care of the residents and as well as this the centre offers a hot meal, shower and education to children in the area who visit the centre each day.

For the past week the centre have been proudly celebrating

10 years of Casa Bridget which have seen countless children supported, 243,200 hot meals, 9920 hours of education, 4000 books donated and over 4800 hours spent with international volunteers. And as Conor Hughes explained the centre is beginning to hear feedback of success stories from adults who attended the centre as children and who have now flourished thanks to the help they received in Casa Bridget.

“We are very proud of what we have achieved in the past ten years and we have got plenty of feedback from kids who have been through our doors telling us how well they are doing. We have got videos from kids who are now priests and teachers and they have continued to keep in touch with us which is great,” stated Conor.

“It has been emotional to hear the lasting effects the Day Centre had on these children who are now young adults and we want to thank the people of Dundalk for

their help in ensuring we are able to continue to help these people in one of the poorest regions of Romania,” he added.

Meanwhile, Crosscause are busy preparing for their upcoming fundraiser which will see them take over a marquee on Earl St. between 6 and 8pm on Saturday June 3. The ‘Mrs Doyle’s Guest Tea’ event will will include entertainment, music, sketches, a lovely girl competition, spot prizes, a magician and general misbehaving. A table of 10 will cost €200 and could be an ideal bank holiday weekend outing for work groups, families, social groups or a gang of friends to get together for a couple of hours of madness. 100% of proceeds raised will go towards funding the hospital project in Ghana.

Railway Heritage A return steam train excursion from Dundalk to Dublin Connolly will leave Dundalk station on Sunday June 4. The train will arrive at Dundalk station at 11:35am and depart ten minutes later at 11.45. The return journey departs Dublin Connolly at 4pm and arrives back in Dundalk at 5.20pm.

The Dundalk Railway Heritage Society have been allocated 60 seats on the above train. The return fare is €27 for an adult and €18 for a child.

DLS students at Robotics Games—De La Salle College, Dundalk took part in the EA Robotics Games in The Radisson Hotel, Galway on Tuesday May 16. Students Loui Byrne, Christopher Stapleton and Ryan Brannigan represented De La Salle and competed against a field of 388 robots from a number of school nationwide where they reached the semi-finals and were unlucky to be beaten. It is a fabulous day out for the school and encourages innovation in a numbers of ways including design, manufacture and computer programming.

Benefits of volunteering outlined during open day

Last week was ‘National Volunteering Week’ with the focus of the campaign outlining the benefits that volunteering can have on a person’s health and wellbeing. There was plenty of activity locally with the Louth Volunteer Centre hosting an open day last Thursday in their offices in County Hall.

There was also a successful ‘Do Good, Feel Good’ leadership seminar which took place in Bellingham Castle last Tuesday which aimed to provide those in attendance with knowledge, insights and discussion on volunteer leadership.

Kayleigh Mulligan, a volunteer liason officer for the Louth Volunteer Centre, was delighted with how the week went and said there had been a huge response

by local people with regards to volunteering around the area.

“We’ve had a great response this week with all the events we have organised as part of National Volunteering Week and even today at our open day we have seen plenty of people come down and find out a bit more about what we do and what opportunities are available for them should they want to offer their services.

“There are 185 volunteering roles currently in the county and there is something for everybody we feel. It can be something as simple as offering to call around to an elderly person’s house to have a chat with them to maybe a graphic designer offering their services to a local sporting organisation to help them with fundraisers etc.

All levels of commitment are catered for by us and whatever

time you can afford to give us we will find a suitable role for you.

“The seminar we held in Bellingham Castle was very informative and our guest speaker Joe Rooney was fantastic. There were some very interesting discussions regarding what the volunteer can get out of offering his services rather than what the organisations looking for volunteers get out of it. While a lot of people begin volunteering because they’d like to give something back, many volunteers find that they actually get more from the experience than they give. When we do good, we feel good,” explained Kayleigh.

Dundalk and Newry Lions club are given locals the chance to take part in a piece of local history as well as raising money for a very worthwhile cause Dundalk and Newry lions club have come together with Carlingford ferry and arranged the maiden voyage of the ferry to be a charity cruise down Carlingford Lough on the 1st June at 7.30pm. The ferry will leave from Greenore and there will be refreshments and entertainment in a marquee on

board to entertain the guests on board.

According to Lions Club President Kerri Malone the idea came about when Terence Mangan from Lions Club International suggested that the local Lions Club get in touch with the ferry company to organise a charity outing for the new operations maiden voyage.

“Terence does a lot of great work internationally with the Lions Club and he put us in touch with the ferry operators

who were delighted to link up with us for their maiden voyage,” explained Kerri.

“We are raising much needed funds for Syrian children’s camps in the Lebanon and everything raised from this charity cruise will go towards building health clinics and schools for them. This is all done through the Lions Club International Federation.

“As it is the maiden voyage it really is a historical event and big celebration which we are delighted to be a part of. I think

the ferry holds about 240 people so if anybody would like to be a part of this momentous occasion I would advise they get their tickets soon before they sell out,” noted Kerri.

Tickets can be purchased at the reception of cathedral financial services, 16 Roden place, Dundalk or through any Lions club member. All details are also on Dundalk Lions Club Facebook page. Tickets cost €25 or £20. The ferry will depart Greenore at 7:30pm on June 1st.

Threat to kill

A man who was in breach of a barring order and threatened to kill his former partner was given a four-month suspended sentence.

Zhi Lui of Rathcor, Riverstown, entered the house of his former partner on April 19 this year without permission. A barring order was in place and he threatened to kill her.

Solicitor, Ciara Hughes, stated that her 41-year-old client was a chef who had no previous convictions.

Judge John Coughlan imposed a fourmonth suspended sentence.

Dundalk parkrun started on June 6 2015 when 84 people turned up for the first run. Since then more than 1,800 people have taken part.

On June 3 Dundalk parkrun celebrates its second birthday and would be delighted to welcome people to run walk or jog.

Marist Students fun run for Make a Wish Foundation

A group of students from St Mary’s College recently organised a 5km Fun Run in aid of the Make a Wish Foundation. They made the charitable and social decision due to their desire to help children less fortunate than themselves.

The group of Transition Year students comprising Eimear Kelly, Leah Dillion, Robyn Agnew, Tiernan McCabe, David Crawley, Lauren McGuinness Matthews, Kerrie Gregory, Sadhbh Rafferty and Holly Lambe Sally have undertaken many

charitable activities throughout the year.

The Fun Run was the most extensive and successful, so much so that the College hope to make it an annual event.

Over a 100 students participated in the Fun Run on a glorious Friday afternoon with the route mapped out within the College campus.

There was a fantastic yet competitive atmosphere. The winning teachers were Ms Reynolds and Mr O’Dowd.

The students were encouraged

around the course by Stephen Jimenez with some music. Students replenished their energy with bananas, kindly donated from Fyffes.

There was a raffle for all participants with a range of prizes donated by a host of local businesses.

The winning males were Tiernan McCabe, Alex Slesseris, and Oisin Myles The winning females were Kerrie Hazzard, Rebecca Lambe Fagan and Blathnaid McEntegart.

Avoided conviction Artisans host their after €5k donation annual exhibition A man who was described in court as a ‘prominent person in the community’ was spared a conviction after paying €5,000 to charity.

Pat Flanagan of Flanagan’s Service Station, Dublin Rd, had his case adjourned for the preparation of a Probation Report after pleading guilty to a number of offences including assaulting a Garda at Quay St on September 23 last.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated as a prominent member of the community, this case as acutely embarrassing for his 55-yearold client. He stated that he was a First Responder and an employer of a number of people, while due to the expansion of his business he travels frequently.

Judge John Coughlan stated that he would accept €5,000 for the Garda Benevolent Fund as the struck the matter out.

The official opening of Artisans Annual Exhibition of Paintings will take place in the Louth County Library at Tuesday June 6 at 7.30pm. The exhibition will be opening during library hours until Friday June 16, and this year it will be opened by Michele Ryan, Director of Services with Dundalk Simon Community.

Artisans was established in 1990 and continues to flourish. It boasts a membership of 30 active participants, both male and female, who meet every Friday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in Carroll Mead Hall.

New members are welcome throughout the year.

No previous experience is necessary as a Basic Skills Course is offered to new members every September for six weeks. There is ongoing support for all members every Friday night.

Artisans recognises the intrinsic value of art in promotion people’s wellbeing and encourage those who feel their creative side is not being developed to its full potential to visit the exhibition or to drop in any night to view the activities.

Album and documentary launch An album of newly composed traditional music and a documentary about Irish traditional musicians on tour in Scotland are being launched and premiered in the Fr McNally Recital Room at Dundalk Institute of Technology at 7pm on 8 June 2017.

A Louth Lilt is an album of music composed and performed by Dr Adèle Commins and Dr Daithí Kearney and coproduced with DkIT graduate Kial Wallace. A Louth Lilt is inspired by people and places in Louth and further afield.

From the snows of Norway to the sunsets of Brazil, the legends of the Táin to aspects of everyday life, the music draws on Irish musical traditions with an ear to the wider world. En-

compassing influences from the artists rich and varied musical experiences, the pieces reflect a lifetime of engaging with various musical cultures and personalities. A collection of the tunes featured on the album has also been published, which will be a useful educational resource for students of the music.

A television documentary, The Road to Speyfest, an entertaining music documentary featuring performances by students from the DkIT Ceol Oirghialla Traditional Music Ensemble alongside and under the direction of Adèle and Daithí will also premiere at the event on June 8. Co-produced with Hannah Conroy and John McCallig from the BA (Hons) Film and Television programme at DkIT,

the documentary features six students from the BA (Hons) Applied Music programme – Martha Guiney (flute), Brianna Madden (button accordion, vocals), Conor Bogue (banjo), Mike Waters (guitar), Ciara Brannigan (tin whistle, dance), Jane Meehan (fiddle).

The group also featured flute player Maurice Mullen who was a student on the MA Traditional Music Studies, an innovative online programme with students spread throughout the country.

New timetable proposed for local secondary schools

Continued from Page 1 than 40 minutes. The total amount of tuition time per week would remain the same for each student at 28 hours.

However, most schools are structured to ensure each week comprised 45 teaching class periods, so in order to comply with the circular from the DES this needs to be changed to 42 teaching class periods.

The change from 45 teaching periods a week to 42 causes problems for schools as 42 is not divisible by five days which means that schools will have to introduce a half day to make the new changes work.

These changes have already been brought into some schools around the country with a half day introduced into the new school timetable. For the remaining four full days, pupils were asked to come in 15 minutes earlier in the morning. Generally, this would mean an 8.45am start.

According to the majority of secondary school teachers

around town nothing will be done until they can get cast iron assurances from Bus Eireann that they are able to support the new timetables and bring the pupils to school on time.

Last week St Vincent’s Secondary school sent out a notice stating that they have already sent a proposal to the Regional School Transport Manager in Bus Eireann and are currently awaiting a reply.

The following statement was made by St Vincent’s principal, Deirdre Matthews: “The exact starting time for classes and finishing times for classes will be agreed when Bus Eireann analyse the impact of this circular from the DES on their service to Dundalk schools. The timing of the drop off and collection of students on each bus route will affect the school’s opening and closing times.

If Bus Eireann decide that the shorter day will be on a different day, St Vincent’s will

have no option but to comply with the bus service. It is very important to us as a school that students do not have to wait any longer than is necessary for their buses home each evening. When I receive confirmation from Bus Eireann on the revised bus schedules, I will confirm to all parents the exact commencement and finishing times for class in St Vincent’s on each day of the week”.

Padraig Hamill, principal in Colaiste Rís stated that there are a number of different ways to fit in the 42 forty-minute periods per week but after considering all the options the school has decided to go for four school days consisting of 8:45-3:45 and one day from 8:45 to 1pm. This proposal has been sent off to Bus Eireann and confirmation of the new timetable will depend on whether or not the transport company can facilitate the schools requests for the new hours.

A man who admitted driving without insurance was banned from the road for two years at Dundalk District Court.

Shulam Sohail of 8 College Heights, Hoey’s Lane, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai at Hoey’s Lane on December 22 last year.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that he had been doing a family favour when driving the vehicle belonging to his brother that was insured.

Judge John Coughlan imposed the two-year ban and a €10 fine.

Remanded in custody A man who was deported from the USA on Wednesday was remanded in custody when he appeared at Dundalk District Court.

The defendant failed to appear at same court on May 15, 2013, to face a series of charges including dangerous driving and criminal damage

arising out of an incident October 2, 2011.

The court heard that the defendant had been arrested at 7.43am at Dublin Airport, and Gardai applied for a remand in custody.

Barrister, Patrick Crowe, made no application for bail but asked for liberty to apply at a

later date, before applying for legal aid. He stated that the defendant had worked while in America but was now of limited means.

Judge Coughlan postponed the legal aid application and remanded the defendant in custody to appear before Clover Hill court.

Facing time in Mountjoy

A man was told that he is facing a long time in Mountjoy if he comes before court again.

Kieran Kearney of 17 Clan Chulainn Park, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to possession of €20 worth of cannabis. The 26-yearold, who had 12 previous convictions, was fined €300

by Judge John Coughlan.

“He is running out of rope and he will spend a long time in Mountjoy for his next offence”, warned the judge.

DkIT ready for launch of Fís 17 Wheelie Bins

The Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) is delighted to announce the launch of Fís 17 which takes place on Wednesday May 31 at 6pm in the PJ Carroll Building. The exhibition will open to the public on Thursday June 1 from Noon to 6pm and admission is free for all.

Attendees will have the opportunity to see DkIT’s state-of-the-art TV studio, audio and radio recording studios, a photographic darkroom, performance spaces, edit suites and a screening room which has facilitated the development of innovative projects and exhibitions once again this year.

Fís 17 will feature exciting and creative work from students of the Communications, Video and Film, Music Production, Media Arts and Technologies and Multimedia Web Development

Students from last year’s Fís 16 which was strongly influenced by the 1916 Centenary

programmes at DkIT. The projects, installations and films being exhibited and screened will represent the diverse creative skills of thestudents and are of interest to a wide audience.

Speaking about the launch of Fís 17, Dr Adèle

Commins, Head of Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music, highlighted the benefits of the programme, “Fís 17 provides students with an important opportunity to showcase and celebrate their achievements and share

these projects with their community.

“The skills developed in preparing for the event ensures that our students are employment-ready and we are confident that this year’s graduates will become successful innovators in the creative

industries both nationally and internationally. Fís 17 is an example of the valuable contribution that DkIT graduates can make in the context of the new Creative Ireland Programme 2017–2022, which places creativity at the centre of public policy”, she added.

Ailish Rocks with an address at 7 Castletown Road, Dundalk, admitted the offence on August 19 last year when she appeared at Dundalk District Court.

The defence solicitor stated that the shop was very busy and that the employee was not paying full attention, while pointing out that the licence was no longer in

her name.

The solicitor stated that the business had got into difficulty and had been sold by the bank to a son and daughter of Ms Rocks, and that she

now assists them with the shop.

The case was adjourned by Judge John Coughlan to November 8 for payment of the money to charity.

Former shop owner told to pay €2,000 The former owner of a shop was told to make a donation of €2000 to charity after pleading guilty to a charge of selling alcohol to a person underage.

Publican makes contribution after error in serving underage A publican who admitted a charge of serving drink to person underage escaped a conviction when he agreed to pay €3,000 to charity at Dundalk District Court.

John Byrne of Byrne’s, Hill St, Dundalk, was initially told to pay €10,000 but solicitor, Frank McDonnell, successfully appealed to Judge John Coughlan to reduce the figure.

The charge arose out of an incident on August 19 last year when a member of staff served the minor.

Mr McDonnell stated that it was one of the best-known establishments in Dundalk and that

while staff had been fully trained in this regard, an error was made on the date in question.

Judge Coughlan stated that it is the “scum of the earth to serve drink to somebody underage” and added that the defendant would have to pay €10,000 or the pub would be closed.

Following a short adjournment, Mr McDonnell, asked the court to reflect on the fact that this was an excellent premises, that the pub has been in existence for 100 years and has had no conviction in that time, while the publican was not present on the date in question.

He pointed out that on conviction, the maximum fine would be €3,000 and asked that the court would consider ordering a contribution of a similar sum.

The case was adjourned for one week to allow the 61-year-old defendant to pay the money which will go towards St Mary’s Special School for the provision of swimming-aid facilities.

Mr McDonnell asked the court to consider that Mr Byrne did not fall into the category of person who sells drink to underage as mentioned at the previous hearing. He thanked Judge Coughlan for acknowledging this.

FUEL PRICES DROP again Hill Street, Dublin Rd., Dundalk.

Petrol and diesel prices have fallen by an average of 1.5 and 2.5c per litre respectively across the country, according to the latest monthly fuel prices survey from AA Ireland.

On average in Dundalk, a litre of petrol now costs around 129.9c, while a litre of diesel will cost around 1116.9c. The latest drops marks the second successive month in which prices have fallen, with the cost of a litre of both petrol and diesel now at the lowest level seen in 2017.

“While any decrease is certainly welcome news for motorists, this drop of 1.5c or 2.5c per litre depending on which fuel you use only goes so far in counteracting a number of increases that we have seen in recent months,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer

Affairs stated. “Compared to this time last year the average motorist is paying 6c more for every litre of petrol they use, with drivers of diesel powered vehicles paying over 10c more.

All this means that motorists are now paying just under €10 more per month for petrol than they would have 12 months ago, or forking out an additional €15 per month compared to last year’s prices if they own a diesel vehicle.”

Despite the drop in fuel prices, the motoring organisation has expressed concern over the tax levels imposed on fuel spend. The AA’s fuel prices survey found that tax accounts for 63.67% of the current price of a litre of petrol, and 59.10% of the price of a litre of diesel.

“For many people in Ireland driving is a necessity due to

an absence of reliable public transport, particularly in rural areas, or because the nature of their employment requires that they have access to a car. These people should not be punished by way of excessive taxation because they need a car to get to commute or access reliable employment,” Faughnan added. “During the recession era the tax on fuel was allowed to rise in response to the emergency situation, but despite the change in Ireland’s fortunes motorists are still being taxed to emergency standards.”

In line with fuel prices dropping on average nationally, the AA report noted a significant decrease in the cost of a barrel of oil, a key trend in setting fuel prices. Currently a barrel of oil costs $53.34 down from $55.85 per barrel in April 2017.
