A 34-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Irene White in Dundalk in 2005. Anthony Lambe of Annadrumman, Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan admitted in the central criminal court that he had stabbed Irene White in her kitchen at Ice House, Demesne Road, Dundalk on the 6th of April 2005.

Detective Inspector Pat Marry from Dundalk Garda station stated in court that Mrs White, a mother of three children, received 34 stab wounds just after nine o’clock having just done the school run. Irene’s 79-year old mother found her lying in a pool of blood in the kitchen just before lunchtime and called Gardaí.

Gardaí in Dundalk initially struggled to make any headway with regards to finding the killer and the case went cold. However, the case was reviewed by the cold case team in 2011 and a renewed appeal to find Irene’s killer was launched.

It was a weekend to remember for Dundalk boxers in the National Stadium as two of the town’s most talented boxers won titles in their respective weight categories. Amy Broadhurst from Dealgan boxing club made history on Saturday afternoon as she became the first female in this country to win 15 Irish titles.

Her victory came just a day after Clann Naofa boxer Evelyn Igharo was crowned U18 64kg girls boxing champion following a convincing second round stoppage of her opponent.

European gold medallist was never in trouble as she outclassed Moorehouse eventually winning on all the judge’s scorecards.

Victory brought a record 15th national title for Amy as well as confirming a spot on the Irish team for the upcoming European Boxing Championships which are being held in Romania in March.

Amy’s father and coach, Tony Broadhurst, was understandably thrilled with his daughter’s performance and revealed that she is currently training full time in Dundalk with the aim of reaching the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

“We are obviously de-

lighted following Amy’s victory and we’re still kind of pinching ourselves that she has won 15 national titles which has never been done before by any female in this country. She has been in England for the last year and a half but she returned home in December and has been training twice a day six days a week in preparation for the Nationals.

“I was a little bit worried coming into this weekend as Amy had her hand in a cast all over Christmas and only got it off a few weeks ago. I thought the final against Nicole would be a difficult fight for Amy but she

From on Page 1 On the back of these appeals Gardaí received an anonymous call from a woman in Australia tipping them off that Anthony Lambe had committed the murder. She was a former girlfriend of Lambe’s and she told Gardaí that he had admitted to her that he had murdered Irene White.

Lambe, who was studying for a PhD in history in Maynooth, was brought in for questioning to Dundalk Garda station and according to Detective Inspector Pat Marry he confessed almost immediately to the murder. Lambe told Gardaí

that he was in a very bad place at the time of the murder and was drinking heavily, taking drugs and heavily in debt. He also told Gardaí that he had been paid a relatively small amount of money by an individual who had asked him to kill Irene. He was given a layout of Ice House as well as details of Irene’s movements on the day in question.

In court yesterday afternoon Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy imposed a mandatory life sentence for Anthony Lambe. Gardaí will now focus their efforts to the person or people who allegedly ordered Irene’s killing in 2005.

Detective Inspector Pat Marry said in court yesterday that he believed Lambe was under pressure at the time of the murder and added: “That is as much as I can say at this stage.”

In a statement outside the courthouse yesterday, Irene’s sister Anne Delcassian welcomed the judgement but demanded to see other people who she believes are involved in the murder also brought to justice. “"It's been a long time coming but the murderer of my sister

has got life today and I'm absolutely delighted.

However, she went on to ask why this tragedy occurred and asked what his motive was.

“Why did he go to that house? Why did he kill my sister? What was his motive? He gave my sister a horrible death. He stabbed her over 30 times.

“Nothing this man can do now will ever bring my sister back. This man is only pleading guilty now because he was caught,” stated The late Irene White.

Unofficial parking causing concern Sinn Féin Councillor Edel Corrigan has raised the issue of the unofficial parking taking place on the N53 Castleblayney Road in Dundalk.

Ms Corrigan highlighted the fact that this is causing problems for local residents, while also resulting in an increase in litter.

“I have been contacted by a number of residents on this road directly off the M1 roundabout intersection. Some time ago yellow box and double yellow lines were installed to facilitate local residents having clear visibility on turning to their homes from the main road. However, there is

now a significant increase in the volume of persons parking their cars on that road to car pool to Dublin and the no parking in the boxes and double yellow lines are no longer being adhered to,” stated Ms Corrigan.

A second issue was also raised

by Edel Corrigan.

“There is also a significant increase in the amount of waste being discarded in this area, from builder’s waste to food and general waste which residents believe to be coming from those parking in the area. I contacted the Council regarding this and

welcome the fact that they have already completed a clean-up of the area.”

Cllr Corrigan is seeking longer term solutions to the unofficial parking but unfortunately because of the remoteness of the area from the town, the use of traffic wardens who are on foot, would be unsuitable.

Cllr Corrigan said “Infrastructure are investigating the establishing of proper park and ride facilities for the longer term so hopefully that will alleviate the issues around this particular area.”

Ardee in mourning after tragedy The community in Ardee is in mourning following the tragic death of a man from a wellknown local family.

Conor Farrell (32) of Mountrush, Ardee,

passed away as a result of a traffic accident in the early hours of Saturday January 27. The incident occurred on the main N2 south of Ardee at Mullacapple around

1am.

Many tributes have been paid to Conor who is survived by his fiancée Ailbhe, parents Paul and Louise, along with his sister Ciara and

brother Paul.

Statement from Acting Garda Commissioner 2,514 waiting on on the fifth anniversary of the murder of driving test date Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe The Acting Commissioner for An Garda Siochana insists that Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe’s killers will be brought to justice and once again called for anybody with information to come forward. Dónall Ó’Cualáin was speaking on the fifth anniversary of Adrian’s death.

“It is five years today since our colleague Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe was murdered in the line of duty and An Garda Síochána remains steadfast in our determination to bring Adrian’s killers to justice.

“Adrian was the epitome of all that is good about An Garda Síochána. In his professional and personal life he was dedicated to the community he served.

Whether it was his work in Dundalk Garda Station or giving his time to coach underage teams at St Patrick’s GAA in Lordship, Adrian was always focused on helping and supporting others. He showed exceptional courage and bravery at Lordship Credit Union on that fateful day five years ago. Adrian’s ultimate sacrifice to protect others will never be forgotten by his loved ones, the wider Garda family, the local community he served so well, and the State. Murdered: DetectiveAdrian Donohoe.

He is an enduring example to us all.

in Co Louth Sinn Féin TD for Louth and East Meath, Imelda Munster, has today highlighted the unacceptably large backlog of people who are currently awaiting driving tests.

At present there are 77,419 applications across the state, between those who are awaiting a date for a test and those whose tests have been scheduled. The longest waiting list is predictably in Dublin, where 21,588 are on the list.

The Deputy Munster said: “This situation has been ongoing for a long time. It beggars belief that it has not been remedied to date.”

“The Road Safety Authority (RSA) have told me in a response to a Parliamentary Question on the matter that the situation has worsened in the past 18 months due to retirements from the service. Twenty three driver testers have been recruited since 2016, yet the waiting list is still unacceptably long.”

“The number of people in Louth awaiting a driving test is 2,514 and there is only one test

“Given the long waiting times in the county it is high time that the RSA reconsidered locating a test centre in Drogheda, a proposal that they have previously rejected. The figures released this week show that a second test centre is needed, in order to clear the backlog and prevent this situation coming about again in the future.”

“I intend to contact the RSA seeking further information around the causes of the backlog, the need for a test centre in the south of the county in the longer term and the apparent ineffectiveness of the last two years’ recruitment.”

in Brief Abusive To Gardai

A man who became abusive after Gardai attempted to carry out a drugs search was fined €200 after pleading guilty at Dundalk District Court. Barry McCarthy (23) of 1 St Macartans Villas, Carrickmacross, was stopped by Gardai while driving at Riverlane, Dundalk, on November 23 last.

They noticed a smell of cannabis but when they attempted to search the car the defendant became abusive. He was arrested under the Public Order Act. Solicitor Barry Callan stated that his client was unemployed.

Calls to commemorate the sinking of the SS Dundalk

A public meeting to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the SS Dundalk has been organised for February 1. Family members of those involved in the tragedy as well as all others interested in the event are invited to a public meeting in the County Museum, on Thursday February 1 at 3pm.

Anne Howard’s grandfather was one of the 19 people who lost their lives following the sinking of the SS Dundalk and she said that the torpedoing of the ship was one of the most significant events to affect the town

The SS Dundalk was torpedoed in 1918. during the First World War. “We hope that this meeting will allow us to mark the centenary in a meaningful way. We know that the County Museum, Dundalk is already planning an exhi-

bition and I’m sure that this will complement our own plans as they develop and take shape,” she stated.

The SS Dundalk was a twin-screw steamer which was built for the Dundalk

and Newry Steampacket Company in Ardcrossan in 1899 for the handsome sum of £40,000. The SS Dundalk had its first hostile encounter with a German sub on December 16, 1917, when on a regular sailing to England it was attacked in the war zone.

Fate continued to stalk the SS Dundalk and on a cold October 14 evening in 1918, tragedy struck as she sailed from Liverpool out into the Irish Sea. The torpedo struck the ship fair amidships, exploding in the engine room and blowing away the whole centre part of the vessel, practically breaking SS

Dundalk in two.

As soon as the ship was struck, the men on deck instinctively rushed to the lifeboats where it appears that two of them were successfully launched. Two men got into one of the boats and picked up five others from the water, and the second boat got away with four or five men. Both lifeboats remained in the vicinity for some time hoping to pick up other survivors but it was apparent that all the others on board had perished.

DkIT mourns loss of student Ross Hanlon The DkIT President has expressed his sympathies on the loss of 21-year old student Ross Hanlon whose body was found in a canal in Vienna on Friday.

Ross, a third-year business student in DKIT had travelled to Austria with his friends to celebrate the completion of his winter exams in the college. He lost contact with his friends outside Flex disco in Vienna in the early hours of

Friday 19th January and his disappearance was reported to local police.

Friends and family began appealing for information regarding his whereabouts on Friday evening and his family travelled to Vienna to help search for him.

Last Friday, a week after his disappearance, Ross was found by divers in a canal close to the disco.

Breathnach calls for more home care funds

FIANNA Fáil TD for Louth Declan Breathnach has spoken about the outrageous situation for elderly and disabled people in his community who have had their home care packages reduced or cut and are just left to cope.

“These are human stories.

These people are desperate. The only reason they are coming to me as a TD is because they

are hit with a stone wall when they try to get help through the normal channels” said Mr Breathnach.

“In one case a 93-year-old man living on his own had his hours cut. On appeal, he was told that his case would be reviewed on January 9. We are at the end of January now and they are still waiting to hear the outcome.

“The only contact has been an answer this week over the phone saying that the HSE will be back to them soon to give them their decision in writing.

This is no way to treat our elderly people who clearly have acute care needs.,’ continued the local TD. “Another man with complex needs confined to a wheelchair had a package providing two

daily visits, which were absolutely essential.

“In early October his homecare package ceased without any notice to him. This man’s wife has recently got a diagnosis of dementia and they are trying desperately to have the home care package re-established, but have been told they have to re-apply.

“These are just two exam-

ples of the numerous families I am dealing with in my office.

These decent people are left in a dire situation, and denied their dignity as they are left with no access to personal care and in some cases no access to a proper meal”.

“I wrote to the Minister to outline this outrageous situation and await his response,” added Mr Breathnach.

DkIT to participate in cross border research centre Two research centres at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) have been confirmed as contributing partners in ECME (Eastern Corridor Medical Engineering Centre), a new crossborder research centre for excellence in cardiovascular medicine.

By developing new models of care, smart wearable technologies and improved patient monitoring systems for older people with cardiac conditions, the EU-funded research centre aims to improve both clinical outcomes and patient experience.

Cardiovascular disease causes 30% of all deaths in Ireland and more than a quarter of all deaths in the UK, which averages at a startling one death every three minutes.

ECME will see researchers from academia and industry collaborate with partners in the health and social care system to create better models of heart disease care and develop new medical grade wearable’s.

As part of the €8.2m project, DkIT has been assigned five new PhDs at its research centres NetwellCASALA and the Regulated Software Research

Centre. Research will focus on key areas of monitoring health and wellbeing at home using sensors and devices, digital feedback to support behaviour change, self-management, workforce development and connecting medical devices to IT networks.

Speaking today, Rodd Bond, Head of Netwell CASALA, commented: “We are very excited to be part of this cross-border collaboration in the vital area of cardiac care. As we age chronic health conditions can lead to a massive decline not only in health but also in wellbeing.”.

The project launched this week and received €8.2M funding from the European Union’s INTERREG VA programme.

Crashed into back of tractor

A lorry driver who drove into the back of a tractor while on the motorway was fined €500 at Dundalk District Court.

Andris Sarts (55) of 12 Farndreg Close, Cox’s Demesne, stated that while driving on the

M1 Southbound he was momentarily distracted when he went to clean his glasses and struck the slow-moving tractor.

Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that there was an argument that the tractor should not have been on the motorway and that

Minister for Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform Paschal Donohue was in Dundalk on Monday afternoon to see for himself some of the projects which are in the pipeline using money sourced from Government funds.

The Minister first stopped off at Realt na Mara National School where he was greeted by school principal Phil McCaul, deputy principal Adele Clune and local TD Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick. A number of families in the local community are set to be affected by cuts to vital funding which will affect the education of children with Down Syndrome.

The Louth/Meath Branch of Down Syndrome Ireland was recently informed by the Health Service Executive that a National Lottery Grant that part funds an Early Intervention Therapy Programme for preschool children with Down syndrome will be cut by €15,000 or 60% to €10,000 in 2017.

This is the second time in three years that the HSE have attempted to cut this vital grant by 60%. In 2014, 2015 and 2016, the Louth / Meath Branch received a National Lottery Grant of €25,000 towards the cost of this vital programme. The Early Intervention Therapy Programme is a programme for preschool children with Down syndrome in Counties Louth and Meath.

Local families appeal to HSE to reverse Down Syndrome cuts

52 children enrolled on this vital programme.

The programme consists of early intervention specialists visiting the home of the child with Down syndrome for 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours every fortnight throughout the school year. The early intervention specialist works with the parents and child within the family structure, providing a wealth of information and knowledge that ultimately seeks to enable the child to reach his or her full potential.

Bernie Bradley from Seatown in Dundalk spoke about how her daughter Jinny had benefitted from the Early Intervention Programme which provided her with one on one teaching before she went into main-

stream education.

“I think this is a very short-sighted move by the HSE as they don’t seem to realise that this programme actually ends up saving them money in the long term. We haven’t used a speech therapist in over two years and that’s down to the early intervention programme. The programme has been invaluable for Jinny and allowed her to learn at home in familiar surroundings which made her feel more comfortable. Jinny would be a bit shy so it was brilliant to have this service in the house as it lends to a better environment for my daughter to learn.

Jinny has made huge progress over the last three years in this programme and I would

ask the HSE to look at how this programme is benefitting them rather than try and cut it. In the grand scheme of things this programme does not cost much and it seems as if they are looking for an easy target,” stated Bernie.

The programme has absolutely no administration costs, as the programme is managed by parents of children with Down syndrome on a completely voluntary basis. In 2015 the HSE reversed its decision to cut this vital grant by 60%, due to the outrage generated by attempting to cut a grant for a programme aimed at enabling some of the most vulnerable people in society – pre-school children with Down syndrome.

The Louth/Meath branch of Down Syndrome Ireland have urged the HSE to reverse these cuts and have warned that if they fail to do so the programme will have to be curtailed

Dundalk Snooker League continues The Dundalk Snooker League continued last Wednesday in the Commercial Club with the teams playing on the newly refitted baizes for the first time. The first game of the evening saw league leaders ‘Team Blue’ taking on ‘Team Brown’. The Browns won a cagey first frame with Steve McBride beating Keith Morris in a tactical affair.

Frame two saw a battle of team captains with David J McArdle taking on Paddy Hayes. Paddy started well for the Blues opening an early lead but David fought back with a great break of 38 to leave Paddy needing snookers on the blue.

A wayward safety from Hayes saw David pot blue and pink to open a 2-0 lead for the browns.

In the third match Liam Johnston beat Aaron Callan to pull the blues back into the match. A simple missed red was costly to Aaron as Liam went on to dominate the frame with Aaron needing four snooker’s on the

final blue forcing the concession.

The blues came into the doubles match needing victory to force a draw. However, David J McArdle playing with Mickey Kelly were too strong for Liam Johnston and James Coburn, making it a 3-1 final score to team brown.

In match two ‘Team Pink’ led by Mickey Ralph took on ‘Team Green’ led by Justin McArdle.

Ralph’s team took early control of proceedings with Ralph himself in scintillating form beating Patsy Muckian to put the Pinks 1 up.

However Maddy Hoey restored parity beating Gerry Rogers in an entertaining frame.

Dominic O’Connor put the pinks back into the lead beating Justin McArdle in a high quality frame which saw O’Connor continue his impressive early season form.

The final doubles match also went the way of ‘Team Pink’ when Ralph and Davey Moran beat Justin

McArdle and Patsy Muckian ensuring ‘Team Pink’ ran out 3-1 winners.

In the final game of the night it was ‘Team Black’ v ‘Team Yellow’ with news that Team Blacks captain Alan Thompson was unavailable due to work commitments only fuelling the confidence of Team Yellow.

Tiernan Mallon got the yellows off to a great start by beating Tomas Geroc. However, it took a black ball fight to do so in what was a great advertisement to the local snooker scene with excellent snooker played by both men.

In the second frame Ken Byrne levelled proceedings for ‘Team Black’ beating Stephan O’Hanlon in style.

Frame 3 saw Stephen’s brother Brendan restore the yellows lead with an array of fantastic potting to beat Joe McEneaney. This set up an enthralling final doubles match as ‘Team Yellow’ had victory in sight. Up for the Yellows was Anthony Fee and Brendan O’Hanlon taking on

DkIT launch their eco-friendly cup

Dundalk IT is launching a new campaign selling re-usable ‘conscious cups’ on campus with the aim of encouraging individuals to switch from disposable cups to a more environmentallyfriendly choice.

As part of the campaign, tea and coffee sold on campus will be discounted by 20 cent for customers ordering their beverage with a conscious cup instead of with a disposable cup. The Environmental Society in Dundalk IT spearheaded the initiative after estimating that every day 2,500 disposable cups are discarded on campus,

Martin Holland who is part of the Environmental Society in the college says the scheme has been a huge success so far since its launch last week.

“We’re delighted with the response to our campaign so far and we have already noticed a lot of students around the college carrying our eco-friendly cups.

This is part of our plan to make the college a

green campus.

“Disposable cups are very difficult to recycle due to their design and almost always end up in landfills or incinerators. Conscious cups avoid this harm by being re-usable,

easy to clean and convenient. The Environmental Society teamed up with the Sports and Societies office in the college to produce the specially-branded cups, which come in a blue and yellow design

in the college sports and societies colours, with the college’s logo on the side,” explained Martin.

The cups are sourced from Dundalk-based company, National Pen. The Snackbox outlet offered free tea and coffee on the Fit-forLife launch day. The Environmental Society also hopes to persuade local coffee shops to offer small discounts to conscious-cup customers in the town, with the aim of spreading their use even further.

Annual St Brigid’s Candlelight Procession The annual St Brigid’s Candlelight Procession will take place on Thursday February 1 from Faughart Graveyard to St Brigid’s Shrine.

procession was held in 1977 and has become a very popular annual event which will be taking place regardless of weather conditions. Hymns and prayers will be recited en

route.

The procession is part of the celebrations to mark the Feast of St Brigid which will commence on Tuesday January 30 with the first Mass of a tridu-

um at 7.30pm celebrated

The triduum will be completed on February with Mass at 10am celebrated by Fr Damien Quigley. Other events on

the day include St Brigid’s Festival at 3pm and Mass for school principals at 5pm. There will be individual blessings with the reilic at 11.30am and 5.30pm.

Left for Australia due to driving ban

A man who emigrated to Australia after being banned from driving was given a further ban after being convicted of dangerous driving.

Vincent Roe (25) of Monascriebe, Faughart, Dundalk, faced charges of dangerous driving at Toberona Road, Bellewsbridge Road and Castle Heights on June 3 last year.

Solicitor Frank McDonnell stated that his client had effectively emigrated to Australia as he was unable to work due to a previous disqualification. He stated that Mr Roe was not disqualified at the time of this offence.

He pointed out the defendant was ‘acting the maggot’ on the date in question and asked that the charges be reduced to careless driving.

Judge John Coughlan refused to reduce the charges and convicted on one count while also imposing a €10 fine.

Awards for talented artists at Ardee CS The National Credit Union art competition is an annual event which attracts students from all over the country.

Many students from Ardee Community School entered and were successful. The theme for this year was “Set Your

A local teacher is in contention to land a prestigious art award after coming through the heat of the Portrait Artist of the Year competition which is being aired on Sky television.

Leanne Mullen, and art teacher at St Vincent’s Secondary School, became the second Irish artist to go through to the semi-final after seeing off eight other artists in Heat 2 of the competition on Tuesday January 23.

Leanne impressed the judges with her portrait of catwalk queen Daphne Selfe and will

now go forward to the semi-final of the competition which will air on Sky Arts on Tuesday March 13.

Leanne trained as a sculptor, and studied Ceramics & Sculpture at the National School of Art & Design in Dublin before mastering in Sculpture & Printmaking at Ulster University.

She started painting five years ago because the cost of producing sculptures is pricey and as a single mum she needed to prioritise the mortgage.

She’s always been a fan of the portrait series and her son finally convinced her to enter this year. A purpose-built studio in her garden means artwork (of varying mediums) is created daily, and the four-hour limit is no obstacle for Leanne as she works quickly and spontaneously, hoping to achieve a level of energy in her work.

Drawing will always be her first love, but developing her painting style has her full focus at the moment. She describes an inner dialogue going on within herself constantly when she paints, one voice is saying ‘You’re crap, it’s crap give up’ the other voice saying ‘you’re ok, it’s ok, you’re great’ Commenting on Leanne’s painting, Independent Curator and judge, Kathleen Soriano said: “Leanne really shone through. She’s got this experience and quality to her work. She understands painting and sculpture.”

Over 1,000 artists from across the UK and Ireland applied for this year’s series of Portrait Artist of the Year.

The show is hosted once again by comedian Frank Skinner and Dame Joan Bakewell.

This year, the winner will be awarded a £10,000 commission to paint multi-award-winning actor Kim Cattrall, and the finished portrait will hang in the permanent collection at The Walker Art Gallery in Kim’s birth city of Liverpool.

A man who pleaded guilty to two public order charges escaped a conviction after agreeing to pay €250 to charity when he

appeared at Dundalk District Court.

Thomas McGuinness (19) of Gaultrimsland, Riverstown, admitted charges of in-

toxication and threatening and abusive behaviour arising out of an incident at Park St on December 27 last year.

In accepting the donation, Judge John Coughlan told the defendant that it proved to be a very expensive night out.

During the three years of the American-Mexican War (1846-48) some 3,000 immigrant soldiers deserted the American Army.

More than 500 of these – mainly Irish – joined the Mexican side where, led

by John Riley from Clifden, Co. Galway, they fought as The San Patricio (St. Patrick’s) Battalion.

Although their sacrifice is often

overlooked – or ignored – by history these days, huge numbers of Mexicans still hold the brave soldiers in high esteem.

News Preparations continue for in Brief St Patrick’s Day Parade Peregrine Falcons

On Monday February 5 at 8pm upstairs at the Spirit Store, Dundalk Docks, Dundalk, Jen Lynch will give an illustrated talk entitled Peregrine Falcons – Life in the Fast Lane. The talk will cover the life cycle and habits of peregrine falcons, and the results of the Irish Peregrine Survey. Peregrines, the fastest animal on the planet, were persecuted for centuries, and suffered hugely from poisoning but their population is recovering. Jen is the new NPWS ranger for County Monaghan and spent last summer surveying and studying Peregrines.

Entry is free and all are welcome.

An asylum seeker who was convicted of driving without insurance was fined €1 at Dundalk District Court.

CúChulainn Archers haves sights on Las Vegas CúChulainn Archers members John Dollard, Brandon Dollard, Fiachra Judge, John Keenan, Éamonn Rogers and Deirdre Rogers recently set off for the French city of Nimes to take part in the Indoor Archery World Cup, the final of which takes place in Las Vegas next month.

Approx 1200 archers compete in the Indoor World Cup, with qualifying rounds being shot every two hours from 2pm on Friday and from 8am on Saturday in three halls, with the knockout head to head rounds taking place late on Saturday evening and early on Sunday morning.

The secondary competition takes place on Sunday morning too, and the Gold Medal Matches take place on Sunday afternoon.

This competition attracts great interest around the world. Archers from Korea and the USA usually end up bat-

tling it out in the Gold Medal matches.

As well as competing this year, Fiachra Judge brought his new invention with him to Nimes, showing and demonstrating his ‘Time Judge’ system to the World class manufacturers who take part in the Archery Trade Show each year.

Deirdre Rogers won her category in the Masters event, winning an archery sight worth €500. Éamonn Rogers was again best of the Irish, while John Keenan and Fiachra Judge tied scores, with Fiachra ending up ahead on 10’s.

Local fashionistas were treated to an evening of glitz and glamour when the students of Louth showcased their striking works of recycled couture at the sixth annual ‘Trashion Fashion’ event at the Carrickdale Hotel on Tuesday January 23.

A celebration of creativity and sustainability, the event drew a record number of entries this year, with almost 200 students taking part and 60 incredible outfits.

The designs on display were crafted into so many styles of wear, from modern to male, and to high fashion and feminine. The golden rule was that they were made from 100% recycled materials which have lived out their intended purpose.

Used car tyres, playing cards, coffee beans, not to mention used shampoo bottles were just some of the unusual materials used to create these fantastic designs. The themes of the outfits also highlighted a wide range of topical societal issues such as road safety, en-

vironmental awareness, homelessness, mental health and breast cancer awareness.

The event, which is organised by Louth Tidy Towns Together and Louth County Council, was presented by the Mona Daly, while the unenviable task of judging the competition fell to Deirdre Sweeney, Principal of Scoil Mhuire na Trocaire, Ardee, Caitriona McGee, a veteran of the fashion industry, Stefania Egan, a successful local model and Willie Martin, the proprietor of V & W Recycling.

St. Vincent’s were delighted to have six winning entries on the night with “Poker Face” being

modelled by Shannon Doherty who represented Knockbridge Tidy Towns. Martyna Czarnocka proudly modelled her creation “Queen Bean” for Louth Village Tidy Towns while Emma Durnin represented Stabannon Tidy Towns with the visually striking “Plant Plastic”.

The school were also represented by Kodie McEneaney modelling the colourful “Too Blue to be True” for Omeath Tidy Towns, Niamh Mulligan modelling “Final Destination” and Annie McGinn modelling “Ophelia” for Kilkerley Tidy Towns.

Colaiste Rís were delighted with their triple success, which started

with Nathan McKenna’s “A Chance to Change” representing Clogherhead Tidy Towns, Callum O’Hare’s Spanish themed “Trashador” representing Dromiskin Tidy Towns and Robyn Kennedy’s fairground themed “Merry Go Loom” which represented Blackrock Tidy Towns.

Colaiste Chú Chulainn were delighted with their winning entry “Road Safety” as modelled by Caoimhe Kampes which highlighted an important social issue, while Bush Post Primary School were thrilled with Jake McLaughlin’s success with “Glam Glad” which represented Grange Tidy Towns.

Mark Browne claims victory at Dundalk GC Mark Browne was a clear winner of Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition which was played over 14 Holes with seven clubs.

The 22 handicapper shot a blemish-free round of 34pts and had two points to spare over John Farrell (22) who edged out Seamus Bailey (11) for second place on countback.

Peter Rogers (1), Pat Curran (13) and Conor Byrne (22) took the category prizes with Rogers also recording the day’s best gross score, a two under par 30pts.

FUEL PRICES REMAIN STABLE DESPITE SOARING OIL COSTS In welcome news for Irish motorists, petrol and diesel costs have remained largely unchanged month-on-month despite significant increases in crude oil costs.

According to the latest monthly AA Fuel Prices survey a litre of petrol costs on average 138.2c across Ireland, a drop of 0.1c from December 2017 prices.

Meanwhile, diesel owners can no expect to pay 127.3c per litre on average, up slightly from a price of 127.1c last month.

“While it’s certainly welcome that prices haven’t increased significant in the past month, it has to be noted that both petrol and diesel ended 2017 at their highest level since August 2015, placing further strain on commuters across the country. At best we can celebrate that the situation didn’t get any worse, but unfortunately for motorists it hasn’t gotten any better either,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “It’s impossible to know what the long-term future will hold for petrol prices, but the continued rise of the cost of a barrel of crude oil is a worrying sign for what the future may hold for pump prices.”

costs just under $70, an increase of almost $6 per barrel since midDecember. Earlier this month, Brent Crude Oil prices peaked at over $70 a barrel before dropping slightly in recent days.

“We know that oil prices are one of the key factors in dictating what motorists pay at the pump, along with European wholesale prices and the Dollar-to-Euro exchange rate. Thankfully the strength of the Euro against the Dollar has helped ease some of the effect rising crude oil prices have on the cost of petrol and diesel, but we can’t count on this forever,” Faughnan added. “In the longer-term we will have to look closer to home for a solution to rising commuter costs and particularly at the excessive

taxes we place on both fuels.

While motoring’s future is going to be electric, until we get to that point we have to ensure people can afford to commute to work, particularly in more rural areas where public transport options may not exist.”

According to the AA, an average motorists who drives 12,000 miles per year (19,200 km) at a fuel consumption rate of 30 miles per gallon (9.42 litres per 100 km) will use 150 litres of fuel per month. At current prices that motorist will pay this €207.30 per month for petrol of which €129.91 is tax. Meanwhile, a motorist driving a diesel powered vehicle will spend €190.95 per month on fuel, of which €110.54 is tax.
