Louth Sinn Fein Councillor Thomas Sharkey has insisted the “good people of County Louth are happy to offer refuge to people in need of it”. The Councillor made his comments after a protest took place in Carlingford following the arrival of approximately 40 asylum seekers in the village. “I’m disappointed at the hatred and misinformation that were spread on some parts of social media,” said Cllr Sharkey. The refugees are here and they need accommodation and the people of County Louth are happy to offer it.” A protest was staged against the arrival of asylum seekers on Sunday, November 27 in the popular medieval village in North Louth. According to the owners of Carlingford Adventure Centre, asylum seekers staying at the centre pose no threat to the safety of locals. A statement from Carlingford Adventure Centre apologised to local residents for a ‘lack of prior consultation’ while assuring locals that the refugees posed no danger to the community.
