A senseless act of vandalism is set to cost a local football club €11,000 after joyriders badly damaged a new pitch which had only been laid down last month. St Dominic’s Schoolboys Football Club undertook a huge redevelopment of the Friary Field earlier this year putting in a new drainage system and laying out a new pitch which was in the process of bedding down so it would be ready for the summer. The club cater for hundreds of children from all over Dundalk and provide a great service to the community thanks to the tireless work of all involved with the club. In the early hours of Sunday November 20 at around 4:15am it is believed a white saloon car drove through the temporary fencing onto the field before doing handbrake turns all around the pitch and exiting through the existing fence at Priory Villas. Extensive damage to the pitch occurred and club officials have been left devastated at this mindless act. “We are devastated by what happened,” stated a club spokesperson. Hopes of achieving a world record for Christmas jumpers in Dundalk may have failed, but the record breaking Dundalk FC were the centre of attention in town on Saturday evening as they were awarded a civic reception for their efforts.
