O’Hanlon Park Boxing Club were in celebratory mood last Thursday evening at the official opening of their new home on the Long Walk. The boxing club will now operate out of the old Toymaster building on the Long Walk having previously used St Nicholas Hall on Phillip Street as their base.

As membership has steadily grown over the last number of years it became abundantly clear that the club had outgrown the modest surroundings of St Nicholas Hall.

The club had ambitious plans to grow and to find a new premises but finances were a problem and any move seemed a long way off.

Then in 2011 boxing coach Paul Taaffe was approached by a production company and asked to take part in a documentary called the Secret Millionaire.

Through that show Paul and all at O’Hanlon boxing club struck up a friendship with the secret millionaire himself, John Fitzpatrick Full story on page 10

Gardai appeal for witnesses to assault to come forward

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to an assault in the early hours of the morning that left a 38-year-old man with head injuries. The incident occurred in the early hours of November 12 on Crowe St. Gardai encountered the man at 3.45am with cuts to his head but he was intoxicated and didn’t know who had assaulted him. CCTV showed that two men were involved in the assault but due to the poor quality of the footage they were unable to identify them.

Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have seen the incident to come forward.

Barry to star on Late Late Toy Show

It’s an annual occasion when the young children are allowed to stay up late to watch the show and see what they want from Santa.

Along with the range of fabulous toys they have to show, there are many musical performances also. This year, Barry Murphy of St Mary’s Road, Dundalk is joining the magic as he is one of the many talented acts due to perform on the Toy Show stage.

He sent in a clip and soon enough, RTE got back to him and he was up for an audition. He had to go through a few auditions before they got the good news that he’d be performing on

He’s been practising constantly and is really looking forward to the long awaited night.

His two older brothers Eoin and Conor, and younger sister, Ciara, will be very proud of him and his parents Linda and John will be behind the scenes at the show egging him on.

pecially his family, friends and all the people at the music group ‘SONG’.

Barry is a younger brother of talented golfer, Eoin, and his dad John is well known as a former Louth and Nh Moninne hurler.

Last year the Toy Show had 1.4 million viewers so it’s a huge deal and a great opportunity for young Barry and everyone is wishing him well.

Boost for economy with creation of 300 jobs The local economy received a welcome boost after it was announced that 300 jobs will be created over the next five years.

The UK based pharmaceutical packaging company, Wasdell, revealed on Monday that they will be establishing a base in the town in a bid to service the European market following Britain’s decision to leave the European Union.

The €30m investment is backed by the IDA and will see a 70,000sq ft greenfield facility constructed at IDA Ireland’s site in Mullaharlin.

The company makes clinical trials packing, primary and secondary packaging, and is also involved in the distribution of biopharmaceutical products.

The company also offers contract manufacturing services with FDA and MHRA approved analytical and microbiology laboratories.

Earlier this year, the group announced their plans to build the new pharmaceutical packaging, testing and distribution facility facility in Ireland, close to the Dublin area.

Local men Stephen and Sean Casey have raised an incredible €17,055 for the Richmond ICU unit in Beaumont hospital in Dublin through various fundraising activities they took part in over the past six months.

Last May the brothers took up the challenge of running in the Belfast marathon to raise funds for the hospital that helped care for their late brother.

Ciaran Casey was only 37 when he passed away suddenly back in 2015. The popular Dundalk man was well known locally for his work as a bus driver with Bus Eireann and his prowess on the football field where he lined out for Bellurgan FC. A native of Muirhevnamor, Ciaran played football with Bellurgan Utd and lined just days before his death on January 23, 2015. The married father of one was rushed to Richmond ICU in Beaumont hospital af-

ter taking ill and died a short time later.

According to Stephen the brothers decided they wanted to give something back to the Intensive Care Unit who treated Ciaran and his

family with the utmost care and respect. They did this by running in the marathon and in doing so raised over €13,000. The following month the brothers hosted a 5 a side com-

petition in Bellurgan in memory of their brother which raised a further €3,500.

“On Saturday June 3, Bellurgan United hosted a 5 aside competition in memory of Ciaran.

32 teams and about 250 players entered the competition and it ended up being a great day of football,” explained Stephen.

“I’d like to offer a heartfelt thanks to Mar-

tin Finnegan and the entire committee in Bellurgan for all their hard work, planning and organization over the last number of months which saw Saturday go off without a hitch. The total value raised on the day was €3,500, which will be donated in full to the Richmond ICU, Beaumont Hospital, Dublin.

“This was added to the funds raised by myself and Sean participating in the Belfast City Marathon on May 1, which brought the overall monies raised to an incredible grand total of €17,055.

A man was told that he would be dealt with leniently if he paid €500 to a Garda he had injured during an arrest.

Joseph Quigley (59) of McSwiney St, Dundalk, appeared at Dundalk District Court as a result of an incident at O’Hanlon Park, Dundalk, on March 1 this year.

Insp Martin Beggy explained that the defendant had been arrested on suspicion of drink driving when he attempted to run away and in the process struck the Garda on the face.

The drink driving charge was dismissed as the prosecution conceded that they would be unable to provide proof of postage of the samples taken.

Solicitor Frank McDonnell stated that his client was a divorced man who suffered from chronic arthritis.

Judge John Coughlan stated that Gardai must be protected as he ordered the defendant to pay €500 as he adjourned the case to March 7.

Woman is lucky to avoid jail A woman who pleaded guilty to assault at Dundalk District Court avoided a conviction after paying €2,000 to her victim.

Nicole Sheridan (21) of 9 Coultry Drive, Ballymun, Dublin, admitted a charge of assault causing harm at Park St on October 21 last year.

Sands, stated that the third year college student was currently on a placement that required Garda Vetting and this would be affected by any conviction. She added that Ms Sheridan had taken out a loan to help gather €2,000 while she also had college fees to pay.

Judge Coughlan stated that in those circumstances he would apply the Probation Act and initially rejected a plea from Ms Sands to have the case struck out as this would show up in the vetting process. He stated that it was a seri-

Ms Sands later had the case recalled and explained that the victim was happy to accept the compensation and didn’t want the defendant to be affected in terms of Garda Vetting. As a result, Judge Coughlan agreed to strike the case out.

Cuchulainn Cycling Club was one of 10 nominees for the prestigious national competition of Club of the Year 2017 run by Cycling Ireland.

Club Members and the club officers Sé Weston, Pat O’Shaughnessy, Karl Dolan and Philip Kerley attended the annual awards ceremony in the Crowne Plaza, Dublin on last Saturday night in the hope of winning for the third time in a decade.

The award, based upon the votes of cyclists within Cycling Ireland, is the highest accolade a club can achieve in Ireland and after much anticipation

in the room the award for club of the year was presented to Cuchulainn to applause and cheers within the hall.

A delighted Pat O’Shaughnessy, Club Vice Chairman said, “This is a great reward for the efforts of all club members and in particular those who took part in new initiatives in 2017 which included, children’s safe-cycling programmes, a new cyclo-cross league and mountain bike training for beginners. The club is on the up.”

A Christmas Variety Show in aid of the Make A Wish Foundation will be staged over this coming weekend featuring a variety of top acts from around the town.

The event will take place in An Tain Arts Centre on Saturday December 2 and Sunday December 3 at 8pm.

Science show visits St Vincent’s

St. Vincent’s Science Department welcomed Scientific Sue to the school recently with her engaging & innovative workshops and shows, as students took part in an action packed two days of activities.

Sue McGrath aka ‘Scientific Sue’ is the Director of Science2Life, which aims to provide education and communication in science, technology, engineering and mathematics in a passionate and engaging fashion.

Transition Year & Leaving Certificate Applied students became forensic Scientists for the day as they took part in a hands on forensics workshop. Fingerprinting & chemical analysis were just some of the CSI techniques students took part in on the day.

First year students also got to experience all the fun science has to offer as Sue brought her jaw dropping ‘Science of bubbles’ show to the school. There was no shortage of volunteers as gigantic bubbles and amazing bubble tricks were part of the exciting elements of the show.

Overall, the two fun filled days were thoroughly enjoyed by the students and showed them all how incredibly fascinating Science truly can be.

Second Families celebrate beatification in Detroit week in court

A man who appeared at Dundalk District Court for a second successive week was disqualified from driving for six years when he pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge.

Peadar Rafferty (57) of Slieve, Hackballscross, Dundalk, admitted the offence on October 23 this year at Roche, Hackballscross, and also faced other charges including no insurance and dangerous driving.

Barrister, Martin Dully, stated that his client had been in court the previous week and was given a ten-year ban. He stated that the defendant had a very serious problem with alcohol addiction and that he wouldn’t be driving again.

Judge John Coughlan imposed a six-year ban and warned Mr Rafferty not to drive.

A group of Louth families were among the estimated 65000 people in Detroit last weekend to celebrate the beatification of Fr Solanus Casey in Detroit.

Fr Solanus Casey has strong links to Louth through his great great grandfathers who were born in Dungooley in the 1700s an area where many of his descendants in the Shiels, Duffy and Casey families still live today. They are also related to the Coburn family who also have many relatives based locally.

Fr Solanus’ grandmother Bridget Margaret Sheils married Michael Timothy Murphy and they lived in his home village of Camlough where they had a child called Elizabeth. Elizabeth would later move to America where she married a Castleblayney man called Bernard Casey. The couple would have sixteen children.

Their sixth child was born Bernard (Barney) Francis Casey on November 25, 1870 on a farm near Oak Grove, Wisconsin.

The young Bernard left the farm to work throughout Wisconsin and later at the age of 21 he entered St Francis High School Seminary in Milwaukee to study for the diocesan priesthood.

He joined the Capuchin Order at Detroit in 1897, he received the religious name of Solanus.

After his ordination in 1904, Fr Solanus spent 20 years in New York, Harlem and Yonkers. In 1924 he was assigned to St Bonaventure Monastery in Detroit where he worked for a further 20 years. He died at the age of 86 on July 31, 1957.

ness have been attributed to Fr Solanus and three years after his death many friends formed the Fr. Solanus Guild to preserve his memory and ideals.

On Saturday November 18 the Catholic Church officially recognised that quality in the Fr Solanus, declaring him “Blessed Solanus” in a beatification Mass at Ford Field, Detroit.

The beatification ceremony means that Fr Solanus is just one step and one miracle away from being declared a Catholic saint. Detroit’s ceremony was just the third time a beatification

Secret Millionaire helps boxing club find their new home

O’Hanlon Park Boxing Club were in celebratory mood last Thursday evening at the official opening of their new home on the Long Walk. The boxing club will now operate out of the old Toymaster building on the Long Walk having previously used St Nicholas Hall on Phillip Street as their base.

As membership has steadily grown over the last number of years it became abundantly clear that the club had outgrown the modest surroundings of St Nicholas Hall. The club had ambitious plans t o grow and to find a new premises but finances were a problem and any move seemed a long way off. Then in 2011 boxing coach Paul Taaffe was approached by a production company and asked to take part in a documentary called the Secret Millionaire.

Through that show Paul and all at O’Hanlon boxing club struck up a friendship with

the secret millionaire himself, John Fitzpatrick (owner of the Fitzpatrick Hotel Group, New York). Fitzpatrick was so impressed with the work done by the volunteers in the club that he pledged to help them find a new premises.

After years of legal wranglings and red tape that ambitious project was finally realised last Thursday evening as Fitzpatrick was on hand to officially open the spacious new building on the Longwalk.

According to Paul Taaffe the opening of the new premises represented a huge milestone in the history of O’Hanlon Park boxing club.

“This is absolutely massive for us as a boxing club. It gives us so much more space and it is a place we can call our own. It was great to be given use of St Nicholas Hall but it was unsuitable really as we had outgrown it and we had to pack away all the equipment every time we finished a session,” explained Paul.

We were treated like VIPs the whole day and it was wonderful to be there in person for

such an occasion. Cardinal Angelo Amato, the prefect for the Vatican’s Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided at the Mass and led the rite of beatification.

To my surprise he presented me with a decree on behalf of the Casey descendants to take back to Ireland. It was a huge honour for me to receive it from his eminence.

“I think there was about 65,000 people at the ceremony which just goes to show how loved and respected he was. On the Friday evening all the Casey descendants gathered at the Bona Ventura Irish centre where we had a chance to mingle and get to know each other. There were relatives there from all over America and it was a really special evening to see all the clan together.

I will definitely return to Detroit at some point in the future. The whole trip was amazing and the memories will stay with me for life,” stated Vera.

On Thursday November 24 ABB hosted the Road Safety Authority Ireland Shuttle bus which was visited by 300 people from a number of local companies.

Over the course of the day the Shuttle bus offered opportunities for all to practise driving and hazard perception skills on simulators (car, motorbike and bicycle). Participants could enjoy a fully interactive road safety educational experience, experience simulated virtual situations in a number of virtual reality pods and experience first-hand the dangers of driving and texting and driver fatigue, practice safe cycling skills on the bicycle simulator.

Participants could also see how driving environments and speed affect your braking distances on the brake reaction timer, practice the driver theory test on board, Test their fancy footwork by dancing to the Safe Cross Code in the activity zone, take a road safety quiz in the activity zone and learn about tyre safety. The shuttle bus staff were on hand all day to offer support and safety information to all road user types.

Accompanying the Interactive Unit we had the roll over simulator. The ‘simulation’ demonstrates how it would feel if you were in a car which turned over in a collision, and the lifesaving benefits of wearing a seatbelt should this occur.

Pupils raise cashe for charity Paula Dowdall from the Maria Goretti foundation in Lordship visited Realt na Mara school last Friday to receive a cheque from the pupils who held a fundraiser for the charity last month.

The kind-hearted Sixth Class pupils took it upon themselves to organise a cake sale in aid of the local charity raising a very impressive €462 in the process. All money raised will go towards the Maria Goretti foundation and according to Paula it will go towards funding a very special event in the run up to Christmas.

The foundation is a registered charity and is committed to the support of children with disabilities. The centre at Lordship, Co. Louth is currently a purpose built eight bed-roomed facility that operates under the auspices of

the HSE and is currently managed by Rehab Care.

The foundation seeks to further the cause of children with disabilities and is interested in research in this field.

Became aggressive Local student Rosin shines on the sporting front when brother was being arrested

A man who became abusive to Gardai after his brother was being arrested avoided a conviction at Dundalk District Court when he paid €500 to the Garda Benevolent Fund.

Darren Carolan (22) of 24 Drive 2, Muirhevnamor, interfered with Gardai when they were dealing with a matter on Earl St on September 25 last year. He hit out at a Garda, striking him in the face and causing bruising.

Mr Carolan, who had no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to obstructing a police officer and assault.

Banned from driving A man who pleaded guilty to being drunk in charge was banned from the road for three years at Dundalk District Court.

Tomas Kulaitis (37) of Bridgewater Mews, Linenhall St, Dundalk, admitted the offence at Clanbrassil St, Dundalk,

on August 28 last year.

Barrister Ronan O’Carroll stated that although his client had a previous conviction it was back in 2010.

In convicting, Judge John Coughlan imposed a €75 fine and postponed the ban to April 15 next.

It’s been an absolutely astonishing year on the sporting front for 14 year old local St Vincent’s student Rosin Maguire from Harristown, Ardee as she picked up a total of 11 GAA winners medals with her local club St Kevin’s and her school this year alone.

Daughter of Peter and Bridie, and sister to Nora, Aisling and Peter, Rosin has been playing both Camogie and Football since she was just four years of age. She is currently a second year student in St. Vincent’s Secondary School in Dundalk and a member of Saint Kevin’s GAA Club based in Phillpstown. She has represented her club at U14 level, U16 level, Minor level and even senior level.

Rosin is the youngest member on the St Kevin’s Ladies senior squad, where she picked up a Senior League winners medal. At the clubs recent underage awards night for the 2017 season, Rosin picked up the U14 player of the year award.

Primarily featuring students from the BA (Hons) Applied Music degree programme but including students from across the Institute, the ensemble has developed an international

reputation in recent years with performances in North and South America, Scotland and most recently Norway earlier this year.

music and song from Louth, Cavan, Monaghan, Armagh, Fermanagh and Down. Old favourites are combined with new compositions from contemporary Irish traditional musicians and reinterpreted to present a fresh sound.

Bodhran Bar Wax/Shave Night In Aid Of The Birches The Bodhran Bar on Bridge St. held a very successful ‘Wax Night’ last Friday evening in aid of the Birches Day Centre on the Priorland Road.

Michelle Byrne who owns the Bodhran Bar began fundraising for the Birches two years ago having read about the services they provide to the local community in a local newspaper. Last Friday was her third ‘Wax Night’ in aid of the Birches and just like the previous two the evening proved to be a huge success.

“We had a brilliant night here on Friday. The place was packed and people were very generous in their sponsorship for all the brave men who agreed to get waxed. We haven’t got a final figure yet with regards to how much

we made but we were delighted with the response we got to the evening.

“Dundalk is very lucky to have such an excellent facility as the Birches and the people that work there do an amazing job to help those that suffer with alzheimers or dementia. They are also a great help to the families as well.

“Unfortunately, I’m pretty busy with the bar so I was unable to offer to help them in their centre but I did decide to hold a fundraiser for them in the bar and we’ve been doing that now for the last couple of years. It’s a great cause and a great night’s entertainment and I’m delighted to be able to help them out,” stated Michelle.

Information evening on Junior Cycle St Louis Secondary school Dundalk recently held an information evening for parents on the changes involved in assessment and reporting in the new Junior Cycle including the role of Wellbeing.

Parents/Guardians of 1st, 2nd and 3rd were invited to attend to receive clarification around the changes and how exactly it will affect their daughters depending on their stage in the ongoing process.

The event was hosted by the school’s parents’ committee who arrange an annual talk for parents based on issues raised at their monthly meetings.

There was a wonderful sense of community and partnership with all the adults present taking ownership of the work to be done to support and nurture the students on their journey through Junior Cycle and beyond.

Kevin is guest of honour at De La Salle College A standing ovation for illustrious Alumni recipient Kevin O’Hanlon brought a fitting end to an exceptional night in the life of De La Salle College – the Annual Awards Ceremony, marking the academic, sporting & extra-curricular achievements of the 2016-17 College year.

In school, Kevin was a dedicated debator and language student, winning a prestigious scholarship to Germany as one of the ten best performing Inter Cert students in the early 1980s. Leaving the College in 1984, Kevin pursued a military career, serving with the Irish Army on three peacekeeping missions, before taking up a United Nations post in the Middle East in 2000. Since then, Kevin has risen through the ranks with the UN and currently holds the position of Chief of Security & Safety for the United Nations in Vienna. Kevin takes up a new posting in New York in January, again serving as Chief of Security & Safety at UN HQ. Kevin arrived for the ceremony straight from the Climate Conference in Bonn and spoke pruodly of his roots in the Farndreg Estate in Cox’s Demense and of his family’s long association with the College, commencing with his great-grandfather Owen Dixon and now continuing with his nephews.

Kevin was the Guest of Honour at this year’s awards ceremony,

an annual event that celebrates the academic, sporting and pastoral achievements of current and past students of the 750+ student college.

The main awards on the night were the Student Awards, with Harry Foley scooping the prestigious Student of the Year (Senior) Award and Ciaran Browne winning the Junior equivalent. Harry is currently studying Engineering in NUI Galway and recently received a Naughton Foundation Bursary (valued at €20,000) & Entrance Scholarship to pursue his third-level studies. Saint-David Olubiyi received the award for Best Results Awards for Leaving Certificate 2017, with Adam Plunkett receiving the award for Best Junior Certificate grades.

The Lasallian Spirit Award, which recognises a student who encapsulates the Lasallian ethos, was awarded to Tiernan Dowdall, a Sixth Year student who has served as a prefect, Lasallian Leader representative, mentor to incoming First Years, Library Book Club and Green Schools Committee member.

Adam Finnegan captured the Outstanding Sportsperson of the Year (Senior) Award, with Conall McCaul capturing the Outstanding Sportsperson of the Year (Junior). All sports were represented on the night, with awards in Chess, Golf, Badminton, Basketball, Rugby, Gaelic Football and Soccer.

The outstanding Leaving and Junior Certificate Results of 2017 were also acknowledged, with prizes for Best Leaving Certificate Results category (overall, class-by-class & subject), Best Junior Certificate Results (overall & class-byclass), The exceptionally high academic standards of the College were also recognised, with 12 students receiving awards for receiving 500 points or more in the 2017 Leaving Certificate.

Special awards were also presented to scholarship winners to Trinity College, Dublin (Seamus Small), UCD (Stephen Kilcommins), Irish Ice Hockey International David Sally, World Record Holder Swimmer Donal Carthy and the proud recipient of the Adrian Donohoe Memorial Scholarship, Ryan Doyle.

The ceremony also saw the continuation of the George and Patricia Moore Awards, inaugurated in 2009 by the late past pupil George Moore and kindly continued by his family, represented on the night by Gerardine Duffy. These awards were gratefully accepted

by Seamus Small, Stephen Kilcommins and Jack Lynch.

Other honoured guests included members of the O’Hanlon Family, many former College staff and Deirdre Duffy, representing the McCooey Family.
