strictions continue to hurt the local economy in what has been the toughest of years for local traders. Unfortunately, level 5 restric-

tions have forced some sections of the business community to close their doors until December 1st but there are still a large number of retailers who have continued to trade by using ‘Click and Collect’ through their websites online.

Shop Local vouchers have also proved a huge success in recent years and the Chamber of Commerce are once again urging employers and shoppers to consider buying vouchers as a gift this Christmas.

A company can award staff up to €500 as a once off payment that is tax free thanks to the ‘Small Benefit Exemption’ scheme.

Nobody wants to see a ghost town.

The message from traders around town is that although you may not be able to go inside some shops, they are still online and ready to trade. This year has seen a huge amount of local businesses improve their online presence with a grant scheme for this purpose issued by the Louth Enterprise Office. Local traders will be hoping that customers will try and support their local economy rather than use the likes of Amazon and other international giant retailers.

Paddy Malone, PRO of the Dundalk Chamber of Commerce said that this year especially the local community needs to try and support their own and help retailers get through these tough times.

“We know a lot of shop doors have had to close but there are a lot of business owners who are still operating within the guidelines behind closed doors weather it be a ‘click and collect’ service or online via their websites. Now more than ever we need to make that extra effort to help them and its vital people do whatever they can to help during the lockdown. It’s our local businesses who give your children work ex-

perience when they are looking for it. They support our local sports clubs via sponsorship and spot prizes,” explained Paddy.

Paddy also urged people to consider buying Shop Local vouchers which are available at numerous locations all over the county including McEvoys, Dundalk Credit Union and the Centra in Carlingford.

“It has been brilliant to see how popular the Shop Local Gift Vouchers have been over the last few years.

With a choice of about 330 shops there is no doubt that the gift would be well received on Christmas Day. This is one way to help support our local economy and if any companies are considering giving gifts to staff this Christmas then the vouchers are a no-brainer as they are tax-free up to €500,” he added.

McEvoys in Dundalk are one of the businesses around town who have had to adjust to the current environment. A familyrun business, McEvoys opened its doors over three decades ago and have since grown to become one of Dundalk’s most recognisable shopfronts.

According to McEvoy’s owner Jennifer McEvoy, the shop is a lot better prepared for the second lock-

down. “We are better prepared in terms of our call and collect service. Our customers just have to ring up and ask for what they want then we will bag it up and they can collect it,” said Jennifer. “Customers can also send a wee message on Facebook and Instagram requesting items and we will bag them up.”

Jennifer added: “We are blessed with the school trade. People are shopping local.

People are making a real effort to get behind local businesses and support local jobs.

“People are a lot more aware of it this time around. A lady said to me she used to always shop on Amazon but now she likes getting it off her own doorstep.

“Shop local vouchers are a great idea. I’d encourage everyone to shop locally if possible and to support local jobs.”

She concluded: “We are going to carry on being here Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm supplying people with their needs.”

Meanwhile Caroline Lee from Colourtrend in the North Link Retail Park has reported good sales in recent weeks as customers utilise the range of options available to them to buy their products.

“Our store has been fortunate locally with sales going really well.

“Most of our business is from our amazing repeat customers and also word of mouth.

We strive to offer the best in customer service through these strange times whilst keeping our customers and staff safe.

“During our sixweek lockdown we have the following options available: Click and collect (order online and pick up in store). Free online consultations with a qualified colour consultant.

Phone orders and collections available also.

Our customers can still call into the store but with extra precaution measures throughout the store. Our normal opening hours apply,” explained Caroline.

The message from local traders is loud and clear. Although their shop fronts may be closed many are still trading so check their websites online and help support your local community during these difficult times.

HIQA releases Dealgan House inspection report

A Health Information and Quality Authority inspection carried out in Dealgan nursing in Dundalk has found there were staffing shortages, poor communication and several key areas during the COVID-19 outbreak which caused 23 residents to die earlier on this year.

The report did however praise staff at the home for the genuine warmth and respect in their dealing with residents.

“The inspectors observed that staff demonstrated genuine warmth and respect in their dealings with the residents they cared for.

Staff knew the individual residents well and were able to tell the inspectors

about each resident’s past life, family connections and their care needs. Staff were knowledgeable about each resident’s preferences for personal care and for their daily routines and activities. Staff spoke with deep respect and profound sadness about those residents who had died during the outbreak. Staff also spoke with genuine delight as they described how well other residents with COVID-19 had recovered,” read the report.

The inspection was carried out over two days on the 27th and 28th of May after 23 residents who had tested positive with coronavirus had died. The report concluded that Dealgan

House was not compliant in a number of areas including staffing, training and staff development, governance and management, written policies and procedures, healthcare, risk management and infection control.

Areas which Dealgan

House were found to be compliant included record keeping, contracts for provision of care, statement of purpose, notification of incidents, complaints procedure, communication care plans, visits, end of life, resident’s rights, managing

behaviour that is challenging, premises and medicine and pharmaceuticals.

The report also outlined the issues with staffing shortages throughout April which in turn led to the breakdown of communication between the facility and family members of residents.

It noted that in April more than 60% of all staff were unable to work due to contracting Covid-19. One of the main issues leading to these shortages where significant delays in accessing test results for both residents and staff. Staff members were unable to return to work until their test results came back negative.

At one stage the manage-

ment team was reduced to just the assistant director of nursing who was forced to continue to work throughout the outbreak.

Meanwhile a statement from families of the residents who died in Dealgan House through Covid released a statement expressing their shock and sadness upon reading the report.

“We are shocked and saddened by the report which has been published today.

“We note that HIQA has determined in their inspection report that there was noncompliance with regulations in several critical areas such as staffing, infection control, risk management, health care and

governance and management.

“The report galvanises our calls for a public inquiry into Dealgan House Nursing Home. It is clear that this report will only add to the questions that we have about what exactly happened to our loved ones.

“We are acutely aware of the ongoing situation of Covid-19 outbreaks in nursing homes and we believe that by examining what happened at Dealgan House Nursing Home, the wider lessons that are so badly needed by the health authorities can be learned and implemented in full to avert a similar tragedy ever happening again.”

O’Murchú brings up Narrow Water Bridge project in Dail

Progress on the construction Narrow Water Bridge will be determined by the Taoiseach’s ‘Shared Island Unit’ that has a half a billion euro to spend over the next five years, Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has said.

As part of the recent budget announcements, it was revealed that the Taoiseach’s ‘Shared Island Unit’ would receive €100 million a year in funding for the next half a decade.

Arising from the announcement, the

Dundalk TD submitted a question for response by Taoiseach Micheál Martin on Wednesday.

Mr Martin said a number of projects are expected to progress because of the new, ring-fenced cash for the ‘Shared Island Unit’. The Taoiseach added that the unit would give a greater degree of certainty to projects that previously had got lost between two stools when handed over to government departments on both sides of the border.

The Sinn Féin TD said Mr Martin had included the Narrow Water Bridge in a list of projects he wants to see progression on, as well as the A5 motorway, and this is ‘welcome news’.

He said: ‘The Taoiseach spoke about the difficulty experienced by the State over the years regarding many projects it agreed to.

‘He talked about cross-border projects, such as the Narrow Water bridge and the A5, and promises that were made. When

the projects were left with individual departments, they found reasons, probably genuinely good ones, not to proceed with them. They found other things to do.

‘While I might have difficulties with some parts of the terms of reference of the Shared Island Unit, I believe the unit is necessary if we are to complete some of the cross-border projects.

‘We have all heard tell in the past while of possible high-speed rail, particularly on a cross-border basis. This

needs to happen.

‘Many commuters in the likes of Dundalk use the Enterprise train, which runs from Dublin to Belfast and back. The problem is that, in many cases, it only runs every two hours.

‘We need to have a greater level of connectivity and ensure more trips so it will be more possible to use the rail network for commuting. The price can also be a dissuader. We need to examine this.

We have to give people opportunities’.

Flu jab more important than ever before - McGahon

People should speak with their GPs and pharmacists about getting the flu vaccine, which is more important than ever before, a Fine Gael Senator has said.

Louth Senator John McGahon said, “As we battle against the Covid pandemic, it is vital that every step is taken to reduce the threat of the annual flu season.

“The Government is expanding the provision of vaccination without charge to all of those in the at-risk groups, including health-

care workers, and to all children aged from 2 to 12.

“Information provided to me shows that the HSE has placed orders for 1.35 million doses of the Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccine (QIV) for the forthcoming winter. This vaccine will be made available to all persons in an at-risk group from 6 months up.

“The HSE has also ordered 600,000 doses of the Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine (LAIV), which is delivered via nasal drops

rather than by injection and will be made available to all children aged from 2 to 12 years old inclusive.

“The first delivery cycle of QIV influenza vaccines to all sites (GPs, pharmacists, nursing homes etc.) started on 17th September, with deliveries continuing to all sites every two weeks.

“By the end of the second cycle of deliveries last week, approximately 800,000 doses of influenza vaccine were delivered to over 3,000 sites across the country.

“This represents an increase of 25% in quantities of vaccine delivered when compared with 2019.

“To date all sites have received 75% of the quantity used last season, and the allowance for the third delivery which began from 15th October will increase this to 90%. Further stocks will be available for the fourth round of deliveries.

“Deliveries of the children’s flu vaccine started on the 28th of September, and all of the total order of

600,000 doses is expected by mid-October, as planned.

“However, this is not the end of it. Those not covered by the public vaccination programme can avail of influenza vaccination from GPs and pharmacists on a private basis.

“There are ample stocks and I am urging everyone to speak with their GPS and pharmacists about getting the flu jab. I’m booked in for my jab, are you?,” Senator McGahon concluded.

Louth Community Call Forum prepares for Covid-19 Level 5 Response Challenge

County Louth, like all parts of the country has now entered into COVID-19 Level 5 restrictions.

The Louth Community Call Forum through its working groups continues to deliver services to assist those in need. The newly expanded Forum will meet next week to ascertain the level of response needed for this new phase.

Louth County Council Chief Executive Joan Martin, who also chairs the Forum, said today “that the Council was ready to support the most vulnerable and isolated in the county by continuing to respond to callers to the

Call Centre (1800 805817), support social inclusion groups carrying out their work in the most disadvantaged communities and work with past and new volunteers to boost an already efficient response”.

The lockdown phase in the springtime was a very different challenge when for example cocooning prevented people over 70 years of age and those with underlying medical conditions from going about everyday tasks.

This new response to Covid 19 phase sees the introduction of support bubbles which will pro-

vide support to people who live alone, one-parent families with children under 18, people who share parenting or custody arrangements, people living with a partner who has dementia and needs full-time care and people who live alone and have the support of a Carer. The Louth Community Call Forum is aware of volunteers who assisted those cocooning in the spring and many of these volunteers are still in contact and often carrying out tasks as needed. Chief Executive Joan Martin also remarked on the great work the NGO sector did

by taking on the management of new clients. This she said was” typical of the response of the people of Louth whenever they are called upon to support their wider community.”

The Louth Community Call Forum is supported by a working group made up of Louth County Council officials, The Louth Public Participation Network, Louth Volunteer Centre and Louth Leader Partnership.

This working partnership covers all aspects of the practical back up necessary to respond to the demands of the Call Centre.

Cross-border tracing system must be introduced Sinn Féin TD for Louth and East Meath, Imelda Munster, has said that we need an immediate plan for cross-border contact tracing in order to fight the current surge in cases on both sides of the border.

In light of revelations this week exposing a fundamental breakdown of the contact tracing system south of the border, Deputy Munster called for increased investment in contact tracing across the island.

At present, workers who

live south of the border but work in the north are not subject to contact tracing follow-up procedures Teachta Munster wrote to the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, calling on him to make arrangements with his northern counterpart to ensure that cross-border arrangements are implemented immediately.

Teachta Munster said: “The number of positive Covid-19 cases in the past few weeks is a matter

of huge concern, with increased restrictions introduced on both sides of the border as a result.

“This week we learned that the contact tracing system in this jurisdiction has collapsed, which is further evidence of the need for immediate improvements and investment in the system.

“The current situation is that if a northern worker tests positive in the north, his or her southern colleagues who are close contacts will not undergo con-

tact tracing as they live in the south.

“The potential ramifications of this are obvious in terms of public health, particularly in sectors where workers work in multiple locations or sites.

“Companies are currently doing their best to manage this situation, but the situation is confusing for businesses and workers and needs to be managed by both departments for health.

“Tens of thousands people

Brendan looking to establish group to keep Blackrock walkway tidy

Blackrock man Brendan Roche is looking to recruit some like minded individuals to help maintain the beauty of a very popular walking spot close to the village. The pathway south of Blackrock beside the Fane River is roughly 5km in length and is known locally as the Marsh walk.

The walk was especially popular during the first lockdown earlier this year but according to Brendan the beauty of the area is somewhat spoilt by the amount of rubbish which is getting washed to shore by the

tide.

“The walk is very popular with locals but unfortunately there is regularly old plastic bottles, cans and old footballs etc being washed to shore which takes away from the scenic beauty of the place. Earlier this year myself and about ten other people took it upon us to get some plastic bags and try and tidy up the place a bit. We had a big clean up and thanks to the help of a local farmer John Lambe we were able to have all the black rubbish bags collected and taken away. Unfortunately

they were brought to a landfill which isn’t ideal as we would like to see the rubbish recycled where possible but with that in mind I am trying to set up a group to help keep the place free from rubbish. It will be called the Marsh Environmental Group and if anybody enjoys that walk and would like to help keep it clean we would be delighted to discuss it further with them.

The plan is to start a whatsapp group and we can organise regular clean-ups through that and keep the place looking well. It’s a wonderful stretch of land with

some great views and sheep and goats etc all along the route.

“It’s great that we have it on our doorstep and it would be a shame to see it end up getting spoilt with mountains of rubbish along the path. Hopefully we can get a few people to contact us and we can work together to ensure that beautiful stretch of land is free from rubbish,” explained Brendan.

Margaret says goodbye to Redeemer Girls’ School Students and staff from the Redeemer Girls’ School in Árd Easmuinn bid a fond farewell to recently retired school secretary Margaret Duffy who finished up on the 12th of March having spent 41 years in the school.

Unfortunately, Margaret didn’t get a chance to properly say goodbye to everybody in the school when the academic year ended abruptly earlier this year due to COVID-19.

However, the very popular staff member was given a fantastic send off last Thursday afternoon with

Margaret Duffy is presented with a gift from Redeemer Girls School Principal Patrick O’Rourke as she says goodbye to staff and pupils.

Principal Patrick each class performing a number of poems and songs O’Rourke paid a glowing in honour of the now retired tribute to Margaret calling her one of the hardest workschool secretary.

We all wish Margaret all the very best in her retirement,” stated the school principal.

Margaret then addressed the large crowd gathered to say their goodbyes and in an emotional speech she thanked everybody for their kind words and wishes.

“I’d like to thank everybody who was in touch with me over the summer wishing me well in my retirement and I have to say I was a bit upset when on March 12th we were shut down because of Covid and my time in the school came to an abrupt end. For me it was upsetting that I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye properly to all the brilliant children and great staff who are here in

the school. I started here in 1979 and have seen many many children pass through my office and the last forty plus years have been very special. I used to really look forward to two days in particular each year and they were the first day back at school when I got to see all the lovely new junior infants and of course the last day in June when we got to have a little break. To all the children here today I know it’s been a tough year for you all but keep positive and I promise things will get back to normal soon,” stated Margaret.

LSPCA issue tips on keeping pets safe at Hallowe’en Louth Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals have issued some tips help people keep their pets safe during Halloween which can be a very distressing time for animals.

Unfortunately Hallowe’en and the days and weeks preceding it can be a very distressing time for animals. The Louth SPCA would like to remind owners to be especially vigilant about their pets at this time of year. Many dogs and cats are either harmed or run away in fright over the next week, quite often ending up dead on the busy and dark roads!

Here are some tips for keeping your pets safe.

Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise earlier in the day.

Once it starts getting dark, fireworks become more frequent.

Keep your dogs INSIDE during fireworks, preferably with human companionship. Bringing your dogs out during fireworks is never a good idea. Do NOT leave your dog in the back yard this week at all!

Provide a safe place inside for your dogs to retreat. When scared of sounds they can’t orient, dogs often prefer small enclosed ar-

eas. If your dog is comfortable in a crate, that is a good option. If you dog or cat likes scurrying in behind the sofa, put a blanket in there for them.

If possible, keep the windows and curtains closed. Covering the crate with a blanker or lowering the blinds can also be helpful.

Removing visual stimulation can also help calm dogs.

Make sure all your dogs are wearing ID tags with a properly fitting collar. If you your dog is not microchipped, they really should be! In fact, it’s now the law in Ireland. Dundalk Dog

Rescue have also been giving tips on how to keep your animals safe this Halloween with th eorganisation’s co-founder of Dundalk Dog Rescue (DDR) is appealing to dog owners to keep their dogs in at Halloween.

Ann Moore from Dromiskin told The Dundalk Leader that “the most important thing is to keep your dogs in at Halloween”.

“In years gone by quite a lot of dogs would end up in the pound because if they were out, they would run away,” she said.

“The best thing is to keep them

in and turn up the volume of the TV to try and mask the sounds of the fireworks.”

She added: “The same advice applies to cats, to all animals.

Some dogs can be very traumatised by fireworks. We had seven dogs once and all seven of them hid under the table because they were so scared.”

This Halloween, the Dogs Trust is highlighting the potential dangers that ‘spooky season’ poses for our canine companions.

It has seen an alarming 358% spike in the number of dog own-

ers seeking advice on how to help their dogs cope with fireworks.

As many have reported, fireworks began much earlier this year, causing increased stress and worry for dogs.

As fireworks tend to be sudden, unpredictable and bright, this combination can have a profoundly negative impact on some dogs, especially to those who may already be nervous.

The Dogs Trust is urging the public to contact their local Garda station to report any instances of illegal fireworks being set off in their area.

Range of measures introduced by gardaí to ensure lockdown An Garda Síochána has introduced a range of measures across Louth, including a large number of static and rolling checkpoints, high visibility community engagement patrols, maximisation of operational ability, and ongoing support for the most vulnerable.

The measures have been introduced to ensure compliance with public health guidelines and regulations following the Government’s decision that the country

should move to Level 5 under the Framework for Living with Covid-19.

As part of this plan, training in the Garda College will be suspended for the next nine weeks except for specialist training activity (firearm and armed support).

This will release the following personnel to front-line policing: - 125 attested garda trainees currently undertaking phase one training in the garda college - 75

garda trainees not attested undertaking phase one training - 60 gardaí working as tutors/instructors in the garda college (out of a cohort of 80 gardaí). This in addition to the 45 gardaí who temporarily transferred from the garda college to the frontline at the start of the pandemic and who have remained on front-line duty.

Dundalk all set for massive Emirates test

Back in early August when Filippo Giovagnoli and Giuseppi Rossi were running kids through their paces at a New York Soccer academy they could never have imagined that just a few months later they would be preparing to lead Dundalk FC out at the 60,000 capacity Emirates Stadium in London to face Premier League giants Arsenal. However, that is exactly what will happen this evening as the Italian duo plot to cause what would be a seismic shock against Mikel Arteta’s talented side.

Dundalk lost their opening Europa League match 2-1 to Molde despite taking the lead in a game which many felt represented Dundalk’s best chance of picking up points in Group B. Sean Murray scored a header for a third consecutive game in Europe and head coach Giovagnoli will be hoping that the midfielder can make it four in a row as the Lilywhites take to the pitch this evening for the 8pm kick off.

Speaking earlier this month following the Europa League draw Giovagnoli spoke of his huge admiration for Arteta and how it would be an honour to pit his wits against the former Spanish international player.

“Arteta is an unbelievable coach, I really like him,” stated Giovagnoli. “He is a talented young coach and he has tried to apply his football principles which is to keep the ball on the ground. They play lovely football and rarely panic or kick the ball long.

“This is fantastic, things like that, and it really inspires me. I like this kind of coach who is not afraid. They want to get the result but through their football principle. This is amazing and it will be an honour to play against him,” stated Filippo.

Fitzpatrick expresses surprise at Louth captain’s grievances

Louth GAA chairman Peter Fitzpatrick has admitted he was surprised to hear Louth captain Bevan Duffy express his unease at having to play games during the ongoing pandemic. Duffy, speaking after Louth’s defeat to Cork the weekend before last in Pairc Ui Caoimh revealed that no testing had taking place in the camp prior to the game while expressing his unease at the fact that a lot of the team were playing and then going home to their elderly parents who they are living with “I don’t understand, with the case numbers going up, the way things are all around the country, how GAA inter-county footballers are all of a sudden immune to this,” he said.

“We’ve teachers in that dressing room. We’ve lads living at home, a lot of lads living at home with their elderly parents.

“It doesn’t really make that much sense. There hasn’t been any testing at all, which I can’t get my head around.

“Surely before the start of the National League campaign every inter-county squad should have been tested. Simple as.

“That would take a lot of pressure off and put your mind at ease a bit, but you don’t know,” stated the Louth GAA senior football captain.

zpatrick said he was surprised having heard Bevan’s comments and insisted that the health and safety of the Louth team were at the forefront of every decision made by the board.

“I met with the Louth manager Wayne Kierans a week or so before the Cork game and when I asked him if the players felt ok about going ahead with the game he said to me that they were all happy to be back playing. We played Sligo in a challenge match on the Thursday before ethe Cork game and we didn’t have any issues or negative feedback following that game. For the Cork game we sent down two buses rather than the usual one to ensure nobody was sitting beside each other and we organised a stop in Semple stadium on the way down to Cork. We have a team doctor with the squad and a covid test can be organised with results coming back within 24 hours.

“When I heard Bevan’s concerns I have to say I was a bit taken aback as none of these concerns had been relayed to the board. We have a great facility in Darver and we have the whole place sterlised and clean. We are hear to help any players or anybody involved with the team and their health and wellbeing is our main priority,” stated Peter.

Safety checks to keep your car winter ready

With the country now in Level 5 of the government’s ‘Living with COVID-19’ plan, you’re likely to be using your car a little less over the next few weeks. However, just because you might be driving less often doesn’t mean you should overlook the importance of car maintenance.

Winter is a taxing

season for cars and the cold weather and heavy rain can worsen some issues you may have been overlooking until now.

Now that you’re spending some more time at home, now seems like the perfect time to carry out a few car safety checks to ensure that everything’s running as it should be.

make sure your vehicle is in good working order. That means regularly checking the power steering and brake fluid, engine coolant, lights, seat belts, mirrors, tyres, windscreen wipers and washer fluid.

According to the RSA, motorists should have the following items with them at all times in case

of an emergency: A first aid kit; A high vis vest or jacket; A red warning triangle (this is a requirement for HGVs and buses); A torch.

Meanwhile, we also recommend that drivers have a winter safety kit in their car, just in case you experience a breakdown during a significant weather event.

Oil Level Sometimes you need to encourage your car to open up and share how she’s feeling inside. By that, I mean checking the oil level, of course.

This oil cools, lubricates, cleans and protects the car’s engine. The oil should be changed regularly, and especially before long journeys (assuming we’ll get to make those again some day). If your vehicle doesn’t have a dipstick, a dashboard light should appear if there’s an issue. Refer to your owner’s manual if you’re unsure of how to check the oil level in your vehicle.

Steering and Brake Fluid On most tanks, you’ll see level readings for hot and cold conditions. The level of fluid should be between the maximum and minimum markings.
