Vice-President Joe Biden returned to the land of his ancestors over the weekend as he visited the Cooley peninsula taking in stops at Fitzpatrick’s restaurant, Lily Finnegan’s Carlingford Heritage Centre and Kilwirra church and cemetery in Templetown where he visited the graves of his relatives. Before he left the Wee County Barack Obama’s right hand man was awarded the freedom of Co Louth during his visit to Carlingford where he received a wooden bull from Louth County Council chairman Paul Bell which had been especially created by local craftsman Joe Lawler .

Dundalk is ready to take advantage of the disruption caused to the British economy as a result of the decision to leave the EU, with the clear message being sent out that the town is very much open for business.

Business leaders in Dundalk are confident that the town is well equipped to take in any multinational companies that may be looking to relocate following Britain’s decision to exit from the EU last weekend. The referendum result also makes the town even more attractive to new

companies wishing to locate in Europe.

Paddy Malone, PRO for the Dundalk chamber admitted that while there may be some challenges ahead, he spoke of the attractiveness of Dundalk as a potential home for multinationals to thrive.

“I imagine there will be a number of financial services looking to relocate and the chamber will be reminding the IDA that Dundalk is ready and very able to take in any amount of these companies. We have a brilliant infrastructure here in Dundalk and in DKIT we have one of the best colleges in the

country. We have so much to offer and we offer all the advantages of Dublin while being cheaper with regards to housing, rents etc.

“We already have PayPal, Vesta and Prometric here in Dundalk from the Financial sector and we have shown over the last few years that we are in an ideal location for these big companies to thrive”, he explained.

Paddy accepted that the falling price of sterling is a concern for local traders but he also pointed out how Britain’s exit could potentially end up benefitting the town with Ireland the only Eng-

lish speaking country remaining in the EU. “We are disappointed with Britain’s decision to leave the EU but we must not forget that Dundalk is ready to welcome in any multinational companies that may look to relocate from Britain during this time of instability.

“We would stress that in the short term business will continue as before. There are no immediate changes other than the significant one of currency fluctuation. Our concern is for our retail members and their employees as sterling falls. We would again

Kind-hearted Amelia Wojciechowska has donated 12 inches of her hair to a local wig making company who make wigs for people undergoing chemotherapy.

Eight year old Amelia who is from Dundalk had not had a hair cut in two years and with hair all the way down to her back she decided to get it cut and donate it to a good cause. Heard that a local wig making company called WigWorks were producing wigs for children with cancer and she decided that she would donate her hair to this very good cause.

“I have very long hair and when I heard that this company called WigWorks were looking for hair to make wigs for children with cancer I decided to get my hair cut in W

Left the scene of minor accident

A man who was driving without insurance and left the scene of a minor accident was banned from the road for three years when he pleaded guilty to charges at Dundalk District Court.

Lis na Dara, Carrick Road, Dundalk, was also fined a total of €650 in respect of no insurance and dangerous driving charges.

The court heard that at 9pm on February 14 last year a car was struck from

behind on Anne St. The defendant left the scene but was later stopped by the traffic corps, but didn’t say why he failed to stop.

Mr Cooney, who had five previous convictions, was arrested for dangerous driving.

Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that the 57-year-old defendant was concerned because he was not insured and was driving a car belonging to his sonin-law who is now deceased. He accepts that he shouldn’t

Cuchulainn Cyclists took part in the National Road Race Championships in Kildare over the weekend and once again turned in some impressive displays.

First up on Saturday was the ultra competitive Masters 40 Road Race, which had over 160 riders on the start line. Here Alan Bingham was in imperious form and infiltrated the early break.

This group had to work hard all day and was never given much leeway by the main bunch. Eventually in the closing kilometres of the 100k race Bingham escaped with Wicklow’s Greg Swinard. The pair had just 10 seconds to spare as they approached the line, where Swinard kicked first to hold off

Bingham by the slimest of margins. The result was that close that the finish line photo had to be consulted before Swinard was declared champion and Bingham awarded the silver medal.

Also on Saturday the Masters 60 race saw the evergreen Jimmy Flynn take a bronze medal.

Jimmy was part of a seven-man group that was just 30seconds behind the winner Belfast’s Sean Hargan. The sprint was won by Sean Lally who has been racing for over 40 years and used his experience to beat Flynn into third place.

This Thursday night sees Cuchulainn host the Louth and Leinster 10mile Time Trial Championships.

St Brigids Accordion Band Jonesboro are hosting a fundraising night at The Lisdoo Arms on Friday July 1 Dundalk featuring Irish Country Star John McNicholl along with special guests. Admission is £10 or 12.50 euros payable at the door or by ticket available from any band member.

This event kick starts St Brigid’s 25th anniversary celebrations, the band was formed in October 1991. The band was able to parade and play at various events in the local area this led to them participating in St Patrick’s day parades in Dundalk, Dunleer, Ardee and Drogheda over a number of years.

In 2008 they were invited to take part in the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Disneyland, Paris.

It takes a lot to run a band and is necessary to fundraise on a constant basis so the organisers appreciate your support on the night.

“We got a phone call from the American Embassy two weeks ago saying that the Vice-President wanted to visit the pub and we were obviously only too happy to oblige. We were asked to keep it quiet as they wanted it to be a low key affair so I’ve been sworn to secrecy for the last while although plenty of people guessed that he would pay us a visit. We had local musicians playing outside the pub and there were about 200 people behind barriers

waiting to greet the vice President on his arrival.

“He sat in the pub for well over an hour and he made time to talk to everyone present. There was a good few Finnegans from the area who came up and they were speaking about possible links in the family and about Joe’s relative Owen Finnegan who left Ireland in the 1840s to start a new life in America.

“He was very laid back and easy going and there was a lovely moment where he sat down and spoke about his heritage and how proud he was of his Irish roots. The whole place went silent as they listened to him speak and he was obviously very passionate about being back in Cooley where his great grandfather had left for America back in the 1840s,” stated Derek.

Sarah is Summer League’s first female referee

The Dundalk Summer League made history last week when the very first female referee was appointed to take charge of a game.

Drogheda native, Sarah Dyas, was the woman in the middle for the game between Rampart Celtic and Fane FC and she had an eventful debut with six goals scored, four yel-

low cards and two reds issued.

According to Sarah she enjoyed the experience immensely and is looking forward to more games in the Dundalk summer League.

“I didn’t actually know that I was going to be the first female referee in the Dundalk Summer League until somebody mentioned it to me. I’ve been refereeing for a few years

now and have been in charge of some games in the old Meath District League and I just really enjoy doing it.

“I was always into football and a few years ago I saw a referee course advertised and I thought I’d give it a go.

I passed the course and after a couple of times refereeing I started to really really enjoy it.

“I just love the challenge of refereeing and

for me personally I feel it has improved me as a person as I feel more confident and I’ve probably toughened up a bit as well.

“Before the game between Fane Fc and Ramparts Celtic I brought the lads together and said to them ‘Listen lads I know I’m a girl and you mightn’t be used to a female referee but just play your normal game and don’t

be taking the piss,” explained Sarah.

“They were grand and even though there were four yellows and two red cards shown it wasn’t a particularly crazy game or anything.

I’m on the panel now for the Dundalk Summer League so I’d expect to ref every couple of weeks.

“For me I’d love to referee a league of Ireland game at some stage

Local age friendly initiative sets national standards

Age Friendly Ireland’s study on housing for older people was presented at the Louth County Council AGM and highlighted how the Great Northern Haven in Dundalk, has become a best practice model, demonstrating a gold standard in independent living for older people.

The Great Northern Haven project was developed in 2007 to promote independent living for older people.

The 16 apartment complex in Barrack Street was particularly progressive combining innovative housing design, technology to monitor wellbeing with

improved access to formal and informal social supports.

The other, perhaps more significant measure of the success of the project, is that it is now helping shape the national housing strategy policy for older people.

The resulting report “Housing for older people: Future Perspectives” which was launched in Limerick in April, demonstrates how the Great Northern is a best practice model in how to best support older people living independently.

In particular, it highlighted three key

aspects of the Great Northern Haven that make it such a good model for housing for older people; the physical location (within 1 km of shops and public amenities), technology (using internal monitors to give security, support and comfort to residents and their families) and critically the strong social supports provided by both the HSE and Netwell Casala.

“This is a wonderful endorsement for a truly collaborative approach to housing for older people by Louth County Council, Netwell Casala at DkIT and the HSE”

Chef abused to Gardai after incident at mother’s house

A man who lost his job due to difficulties with alcohol was arrested after being abusive to Gardai following an incident at his mother’s house.

When searched at Dundalk Garda Station, Michele Catalano of 13 Emer Tce, Castletown Road, Dundalk, was found to have a small quantity of cannabis and as a result was fined €250 at Dundalk District Court.

Evidence was given that on October 10 last year, Gardai were called to an incident at his mother’s house

where he wasn’t welcome. He became aggressive to Gardai and was told to leave. However, he returned to the scene and started banging on the door.

Solicitor, Eleanor Kelly, stated that her client was co-operative with Gardai. She added that the 43-yearold defendant had been in Ireland for 12 years and was working as a chef for ten before difficulties with alcohol caused him to lose his job.

Ms Kelly added that his offending had been alcohol related and that he has had treatment.

THE Irish Maritime Festival in association with Maxol takes place at Drogheda Port on July 9 and 10. This awardwinning festival, now it its fourth year, will feature a fabulous artisan food and craft beer zone showcasing local produce from across the north east.

Teen driver panicked when he saw Gardai

A teenager who panicked when he saw Gardai because he had no insurance and fled from the scene was disqualified from driving for two years at Dundalk District Court.

Ryan McDonnell of 10 Gort Nua, Station Rd, Castlebellingham, took a roundabout in the wrong direction and travelled at speed to escape from the Gardai at Ravensdale Park on November 12 last year.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his 18-year-old client went around the roundabout the wrong way as a shortcut in a bid to avoid detection.

When Gardai challenged him the next day he acknowledged what he had done.

He stated that the defendant had paid €300 for the car but the quote for insurance ran into thousands which meant he had no chance of getting cover.

He had no insurance and when he saw the Gardai he compounded the problem by driving off.

The solicitor added that Mr McDonnell was employed in a hardware store in Ardee and this could involve driving on site or on the street, although this aspect was not critical to his employment.

Judge William Hamill imposed a two year disqualification in respect of the no insurance and dangerous driving charges, while imposing a €400 fine.

Dundalk Red Cross to represent Ireland

Six members of Dundalk’s Red Cross will fly the flag for Ireland next week in Ljubljana, Slovenia where the FACE 2016 competition will take place.

FACE is the First Aid Convention in Europe and pits 22 teams against each other to find out who are the best team in Europe.

Dundalk successfully hosted the event back in 2012 and historically Ireland have a fantastic record in this competition winning it five times and coming second in Austria back in 2013.

Dundalk Red Cross earned their chance to represent Ireland at FACE 2016 by winning the national Red Cross competition where they received the Presidents per-

petual trophy which was presented to them by President Higgins earlier on this year.

The team consists of Orla Sheridan, Dave Nordon, Paul

Nordon, Miriam Watters, Aoife Clarke and Síomha Murphy with Aoife and Síomha set to make their debut in international competition.

As Dundalk Red Cross team member Aoife Clarke explains the team are honoured to be representing their country in Slovenia and they are hopeful that all their training and hard work in recent months will see them do well in Slovenia.

“We’ve been training really hard over the last few months and we can’t wait to get out there now and start competing.

“We will fly out to Slovenia today (Wednesday) and the opening ceremony is on the Friday with competition starting on Saturday,” explained Aoife.

“We got to represent Ireland at the championships by winning the Presidents Cup which is a national team competition. We will face similar challenges in Slovenia where

typically we have to deal with all types of scenarios such as, negotiating the treatment of hostages with armed terrorists or dealing with a motorbike and car collision to name just two examples.

“The competition is based around simulated emergency situations, and tests the response and reaction time of the six team members. It is very tough and we’ll all have to be on the ball as we are marked on response time and leadership skills.

“I’d like to thank everybody for all their support for the event and hopefully we can do Ireland proud.” added Aoife.

The FACE competition’s opening ceremony takes place on Friday July 1 with the competition taking place on Saturday.

Leinster cricket title for St Vincents St Vincent’s first year cricket team fought off tough competition recently to take the Leinster league crown.

Following a series of tough matches they took on the might of Wesley College at the neutral venue in King’s Hospital, Dublin.

Team coaches Deborah and Louise Challoner along with Captain Sammar Haider and vice-captain Hui Ci Yu had the team well prepared for action.

After fielding first, St Vincents were set a target of 83 runs and with this target in their sights the girls organised their batting order and maximised their runs going into the last over needing six runs.

Unbelievably a field error resulted in a draw which saw the two teams play a ‘super over’.

Chloe Moran was chosen to bowl for St. Vincent’s and she showed nerves of steel as she conceded only four runs.

Aoife Conneally also rose to the challenge and ran four runs off the next two balls.

With the tension mounting the girls finally got the winning run they needed and to the great delight of onlookers clinched the Leinster title, much to the delight of coach Deborah.

“This junior side have shown fantastic spirit and determination during this tournament. They are relatively new to this sport and have taken it on with such enthusiasm.

“We look forward to building on this success in future competitions”, she stated.

A strong contingent of CúChulainn Archers members made their way to Cavan last weekend for the Irish National Outdoor Championships. Having entered in Individual, Team and Mixed Team events the Co. Louth based club were intent on bringing home as many medals as possible. Éamonn Rogers, Brendan Forde, Fiachra Mac an Bhreithiún, Christina O’Sullivan, John Keenan, Adria Quinn, Michelle Williams, Ann Marie Murray, Shona Judge and Deirdre Rogers all made the trip.

Despite the strange weather encountered over the course of the two-day competition, with thunder, heavy rain and very high temperatures with very strong

sun, the club fared very well.

Congratulations to Gold medalists Brendan Forde and Shona Judge, Recurve Mixed Doubles team, to Silver medalists Éamonn Rogers and Adria Augusta Quinn in the Compound Mixed Doubles Team, and to Bronze medalists Fiachra Judge, and Deirdre Rogers MhicRuaidhrí in the Compound Mixed Doubles Team.

There was further success for Gold medalists Éamonn Rogers, Fiachra Judge and John Keenan, (mens Compound Team), to Gold medalists Shona Judge, Michelle Williams and Ann Marie Murray (women’s Recurve Team), and to Gold medalists Adria Augusta Quinn, Christina O’Sullivan and Deirdre Rogers MhicRuaidhrí

(women’s Compound Team ).

The Ardee club weren’t finished there and picked up further honours with including Silver medalist Adria Augusta Quinn, in Senior Women’s Compound Individual, Bronze Medalist Deirdre Rogers MhicRuaidhrí, in Senior Women’s Compound individual, and Bronze medalist Shona Judge, in Senior Women’s Recurve individual, along with Silver medalist Deirdre Rogers MhicRuaidhrí, in Master Women’s Compound individual.

Caolan selected on Leinster team Caolan Rafferty has achieved one of his major goals for 2016 by being selected on the Leinster team for next week’s Interprovincial Championship in Fota Island.

It’s the 23-year-old’s first provincial cap and he’s hoping that it will be a stepping-stone to another objective which is to represent Ireland.

The Leinster team, which is captained by Greenore’s legend Seamus McParland, is bidding to retain the title they won last year in Rosapenna and the eight strong team includes four survivors from 2015.

Rafferty got another boost this week when he rose 109 places in the Amateur World Rankings following his great performance

at the British Amateur Championship where he reached the last 32. He is now ranked at 354th in the world.

However, the week ended on a disappointing note for Rafferty and the other members of the club’s Senior Cup team as they went out in the first round on Saturday when they lost 3-2 to Laytown & Bettystown in the Regional qualifier at Baltray.

Meanwhile, a strong back nine of 21pts was enough to give Jim Rowland (12) overall victory in Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition.

Rowland and Sean Hession (9) both returned excellent scores of 39pts given the difficult conditions and Rowland took first prize on countback after a round

that included nine pars and saw him score at every hole.

Terry Conlon (6) finished third overall on 38pts while Peter Rogers (2), David Brennan (14) and Pat O’Hanlon (21) won the category prizes.

Ardee’s Keith Hargadon (19) won Wednesday’s Open Singles Stableford with a super 43pts. Andrew Coburn (13), Gareth Halpin (17) , Benny O’Shaughnessy (22) won the category prize while Joseph Laverty (26) took the juvenile prize.

The July Open Week starts on Sunday with the Minor and Intermediate Scratch Cups and the time sheet for this and all the other competitions next week are available on the BRS System.

A man who pleaded guilty to a series of thefts was given the chance to avoid a jail term when his case at Dundalk District Court was put back to July 20 for a Community Service Report.

Noel McDonagh of 54 Grange Drive, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, was also told that he would have to pay compensation for the goods taken.

The court heard that on November 30 last year, the defendant took €11.50 worth of Christmas decorations from a shop on Earl St, and on the same day took decorations valued at €16.50 from a shop on Clanbrassil St. On that day he also took five bottles of vodka from Lidl, Avenue Rd, and dropped two as he left.

Sun shines for Castletown Girls Annual Sports Day Castletown Girls School held their Sports Day recently and the weather Gods were smiling as the school enjoyed a fine day in the De La Salle field behind the school.

The day was split into two parts with the morning seeing all the students taking part in races and sports events while the afternoon was designated for fun and games with all children enjoying their day immensely.

School principal Marion McNally thanked all the teachers who

helped the day run so smoothly.

“We’ve had a great Sports Day again this year and the weather has been very kind to us as well.

We ran all our formal races this morning with some outstanding performances by our pupils and this afternoon has been more relaxed with the older children enjoying fun and games.

“We’d like to thank all the parents who have helped out and Noel Rice for sponsoring all the treats we have here this afternoon for the kids. Diarmuid our care-

taker has also worked really hard to get the field looking as good as it does and we even have past pupils here today helping out around the place,” stated Marion.

Castletown Girls School also held their annual school plays with Junior Infants all the way up to Sixth Class taking to the stage at various times during the day. Plays were performed by the junior pupils at 1pm in the after- Pupils from Castletown Girls School enjoying their Sports Day noon and the senior students took to the stage at 7pm on Thursday evening.

Dance Kids celebrate ‘Let’s Dance’ success Freda Hearty and the Dance Kids have once again delighted audiences with their show ‘Let’s Dance’. The talented Dance Kids aged from just four years danced and sang their hearts out at the weekend when ‘Let’s Dance’ took to An Tàin Arts Centre stage and brought the house down.

With two packed shows, enchanted audiences were invited to be the special guests of Beauty and the Beast, where they received a very warm welcome from Miss Potts, Chip, Luminere and the dancing dishes.

The tiny tots got the biggest cheer of the night when they took to the

stage to perform to songs from the musicals such as ‘Happy Talk’ and ‘Singing in the Rain’.

Afterwards the audience wasdelighted with songs from Michael Jackson, ‘Matilda’, ‘Cats’ and ‘Justin Bieber’ to name just a few.

The night of entertainment also included a trip to

Greece where the cast of Mamma Mia danced the night away with the audience singing and dancing along.

Preparations are now underway for the Dance Kids annual Christmas show, which will take place in An Tàin Arts Centre in December.

Stephen stars in hit comedy Dundalk’s Stephen Burns is part of a starstudded cast that is entertaining audiences in the hit comedy, Wrong Turn at Lungfish.

The show, which is taking place in the Viking Theatre until Saturday July 17, is about terminally ill

former college dean and a young, sassy girl that comes to read to him in hospital. Reflecting the different backgrounds of these two characters and the cultural clash that ensues between them, it is a comedy that is both intelligent and bawdy.

Driver avoids road ban

Castletown Girls School annual fun day.

A MAN who pleaded guilty to driving without insurance was spared a conviction after it was argued that he needed his licence to drive to work.

Mantas Marciulionis of 168 Oaklawns, Dundalk, was fined a total of €600 after also admitted having no tax.

The court heard that on December 12 last year, Gardai responded to a report of a traffic

accident on the Avenue Road, Dundalk. The defendant didn’t have insurance nor a valid tax disc.

Solicitor, Paula Tiernan, stated that the 20-year-old defendant’s licence was vital to him for shift work.

Judge William Hamill imposed a €400 fine in respect of no insurance and €200 fine for having no tax.

Caused obstruction while begging A woman who was causing an obstruction while begging on the street was fined €75 at Dundalk District Court.

Maria Rostas of 49 Park St, Dundalk, was observed by Gardai on Clanbrassil St on May 6 last year and told to leave the area.

However, she returned to the same place soon after and was arrested after causing an obstruction while

pestering people for money.

Solicitor, Niall Breen, stated that the 39-year-old from Romania was not in receipt of social welfare and was trying to provide for her family. He added that she understands that she can’t do this.

Mr Breen explained that she is living with a friend who is providing food.
