Fianna Fail were the big winners in the local elections with both Erin McGreehan and Sean Kelly winning Louth County Council seats for the first time. The national green wave didn’t quite materialise locally with only one Green Party representative getting elected on to the local authority. Marianne Butler managed to retain her seat in Dundalk South following an impressive showing which saw her elected on the first count. However, the DundalkCarlingford seat they had held through Mark Dearey was lost with Dearey’s replacement Eoin Ryan narrowly missing out. Sean Connolly from Tallanstown also

failed to get past the winning post in the Ardee electoral area. All 29 seats on the local authority have now been filled with Fianna Fail managing to gain an extra two seats which brings them up to seven in the newly formed council. It was also a great day for independent candidate Maeve Yore who topped the poll in Dundalk South after receiving an impressive 1701 first preference votes. A jubilant but very tired Maeve thanked all who had voted for her and who had canvassed hard to help her retain her seat. She indicated that her excellent showing was a sign that people wanted change. There will be two new faces on the council from the Continued on Page 18

Hugh makes up for missing out in 2014 By Paul Byrne

Dolores Minogue and Colm Markey topped the poll in Ardee with the Fine Gael duo securing 1,404 and 1,388 votes respectively which was enough to see both elected after the first count. Sinn Fein’s Pearse McGeough was successful for a fourth time having first secured election back in 2004. McGeough was elected after the seventh count and will be Sinn

Fein’s only representative in Ardee. Jim Tenanty and Hugh Conlon were also both elected with the two independents receiving 955 and 767 first preference votes. Tenanty was elected after the seventh count while Conlon was elected after count nine. Victory for Hugh Conlon makes up for the heartache he endured five years ago when he lost out by a handful of votes to Jim Tenanty after a recount. Fianna Fáil will also be

represented in Ardee thanks to a good showing from John Sheridan who secured 870 votes to help him gain election after the ninth count. Ardee: 6 seats Dolores Minogue (Fine Gael)1,404 (elected count 1) Colm Markey (Fine Gael) - 1,388 (elected count 1) Pearse McGeough (Sinn Féin) 1,007 (elected count 7) Jim Tenanty (Independent)- 955 (elected count 7)

Antóin Watters topped the poll in Dundalk Carlingford with the Sinn Fein councillor securing 1,563 votes. Antóin had been co-opted to replace the retiring Jim Loughran back in 2016 so this was the 29 year old’s first successful election. He was joined by his party colleague Edel Corrigan who was elected after the third count following the transfer of votes from her eliminated colleague

Eugene Garvey. Garvey’s failure to gain a seat mean that Sinn Fein have dropped from three to two seats in Dundalk-Carlingford. Meanwhile, it was a good day for Fianna Fáil in the area with all three candidates managing to secure a seat. Erin McGreehan polled very well in her first election, securing 1151 votes which saw her elected after the fifth count. Another first time runner Seán Kelly also had reason to celebrate with the newcomer

securing 1,072 votes which saw him gain election after the sixth count. Meanwhile Conor Keelan saw off the challenge of the Green Party’s Eoin Daly to secure his third successive election success having first becoming a councillor in 2009. Fine Gael’s John McGahon also enjoyed a successful campaign as he retained his seat after the first count having secured an impressive 1,357 votes. Dundalk/C’ford: 6 seats

Maeve was joined by Marianne Butler from the Green Party (1,497 first preference votes) and Ruairí Ó’Mhurchú from Sinn Fein (1,423) who were also elected after the first count. Fine Gael’s Maria Doyle also enjoyed a successful campaign with the Carrick Road councillor enjoying a second successive election after receiving 1,346 votes. Maria was elected after the second count and will be Fine Gael’s only representative in Dundalk South following the failure of

Linus English to secure election. Fianna Fáil will have two representatives locally thanks to Liam Reilly and Emma Coffey both securing election after the ninth count of votes. The seventh and final seat in Dundalk South will be taken up by Sinn Fein’s Tomás Sharkey who was elected for a third time on to Louth County Council. Conor plans to run ten marathons by August By Paul Byrne

A local man has set himself a target of running ten marathons in the space of six months to help raise funds for Rape Crisis Network Ireland (RCNI). 22-year old Conor Brendan Dunne from Drumcar has already ticked off two marathons from his list having run in both Paris and Bordeaux last month. Over the next few weeks he will take part in both the Stockholm and Waterford marathons and by August he is hopeful that he will have completed all ten. “Yeah, that’s the plan alright!,” laughs Conor. “We’ll see how the body holds up but at the moment I plan on running at least ten marathons to help raise some funds as well as awareness for Rape Crisis Network Ireland. “I suppose the idea for all this started when I attended a youth conference in the USA last year. The theme of the conference was how to be a change maker in your community and it made me realise that you don’t have to be famous or very rich to actually go out and make some sort of positive impact in your community. Anything you can do is better than nothing no matter how small and there is also a chance

Conor in action

that your small act will inspire someone else to try something as well. “I was always a keen runner and did a bit of cross country in my younger days so I decided to choose running as a means of a fundraiser. I had never attempted a marathon before though so I have to say it was a bit of a shock to the system when I began training for it. Gradually

however your body gets better at recovering and I’ve began to eat well, sleep well and I am constantly stretching,” stated Conor. “I was trying to figure out what charity or organisation to help and I knew it had to be something that was close to my heart. I was talking to a friend of mine in a café and I was telling her my plans for the marathons and how I still hadn’t decided what charity to help out. She told me a story about her experiencing regarding sexual assault and it really affected me and I left the café knowing that I was going to pick RCNI as my chosen organisation to help. “I’ve set up a gofundmepage and if anybody can help me raise some money for rape crisis network Ireland that would be great. Even if it’s only a couple of euro it will be much appreciated. So far I’ve been running at about 3 and a half hour pace for the marathons and training maybe three days a week. It is tough but I’m determined to see it through and hopefully make a positive difference in doing so,” added Conor Conor’s gofundme page can be found by typing rcni marathon challenge in the search bar at www.gofundme.com

Dundalk Kickboxer Eadaoin McCrave landed an unprecedented treble of gold medals at the recent Hungarian Kickboxing World Cup held in Budapest last weekend. Eadaoin from Haggardstown is the reigning 65kg national champion and trains in Tallaght martial arts Dublin under chief instructors Dave Heffernan and Martin Bannon. She competed in four different divisions in preparation for the upcoming Junior European Championships at the end of August. She stepped up a couple of weights and settled a

ing Eadaoin managed to defeat her German and Czech Republic opponents before defeating Austrian Anesa Trle by 11-9 in the semi-final. This was a sweet victory for Eadaoin who exacted revenge for a defeat to the same opponent at the same stage in the European championships in 2017. Eadaoin then went on to comfortably defeat Andriana Klimantiri from Greece in the final by nine points and secure her first gold medal. Over the course of Eadaoin McCrave the next two days Eadfew old scores on her aoin entered the -65kg way. In her first divi- and the -75kg points sion -70kg points fight- fighting where wins

over Hungary, Germany, Italy, fellow Irish fighter Niamh Ryan from Cabra and Slovenian Fighter Masa Kenjalo who defeated Eadaoin last year brought along another gold medal. A narrow defeat in the final of the -65kg by Selina Kattnig from Austria secured a silver medal. With all other divisions in the arena concluded the best was left to last and with wins over Croatia and Hungary, Eadaoin made her way to the final of the -65kg kick light final to meet current Polish champion Zuzanna Kalbarczyk. After the

first round Eadaoin found herself behind on all three judges scorescards. However, spurred on by the big crowd that gathered and a change of tactics by National Coach Dave Heffernan, Eadaoin turned it around to take the lead in the last 20 seconds and hold on for a hard-fought victory to complete the hat trick of gold medals. Eadaoin will move on now in her preparation for the European Championships in August by taking part in the kickboxing Ireland Training Camps around Ireland for the next 10 weeks.

Construction works begin on WuXi facility

The new €325 million state-ofthe-art WuXi Biologics facility has begun to take structural form as steel erection begins on the company’s 52-acre campus site in Dundalk. Work is on schedule for the new contract manufacturing biologics facility which, at 48,000 square metres in size, is set to become the world’s largest single-use biologics manufacturing facility. Planning approval for the facility was confirmed in mid-January. Since then some 200,000 tonnes

of earth have been moved and relocated within the site during sitedevelopment works while 2,900 cubic metres of concrete poured for foundations. In all, over 5,000 tonnes of steel sourced from an Irish supplier has arrived on site to enable steel-works get underway. “The project is truly moving at ‘WuXi speed’ and we are delighted with progress to date”, said WuXi Biologics Ireland Site Head and VP Manufacturing Brendan McGrath. “Cladding work will

commence at the end of July and we are on target to have all of the buildings weather tight by January. This will enable us to move ahead with the installation of the processing plant and equipment to bring us into full commercial production on schedule by 2022.” The rapidly advancing schedule will see the number of construction workers on site increase from 120 at present to 500 by year end. Peak construction employment for the project will reach 2,000. WuXi Biologics is China’s lead-

ing end-to-end biologics solutions provider and the Dundalk campus which is to be WuXi Biologics first manufacturing facility outside China. Biologics drugs represent a new frontier in medicine. Developed in bioreactors from genetically engineered microbes, these medicines are developed within living cell culture; a highly complex process which involves the production of fragile substances at heavy cost. “The production of highly specialised biologics medicines often involves the manu-

facture of relatively small quantities of highly specialised drugs”, Brendan McGrath explained. “Generally, it is neither practical nor economic to manufacture small volumes of specialist biologics medicines in traditional large-scale biopharma facilities. Instead, the single use technology and processes which we will create in our new Dundalk campus will allow for cost-efficient scale-out of contract manufacturing biologics production from small to large volumes as required, he added.

Ó Fiaich Class of 2019 graduation

The night of May 9th 2019 saw almost 500 graduates of Ó Fiaich Institute of Further Education conferred with qualifications across Level 5 and Level 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications. A jubilant and celebratory mood reverberated around the Hamilton Suite of the Crowne Plaza, in an event that was well attended by invited guests Martin O Brien; CE LMETB, Sadie Ward Mc Dermott; FET Director LMETB, Margaret Deegan; Principal Colaíste Clavin, Davy Mc Donnell; Principal DIFE, family and friends of graduates, Ó Fiaich teachers and support staff. Speaking to the assembly Megan McDowell, a 2019 graduate of the Level 5 Nursing Studies course, described completing the course as an “invaluable experience” and reflected that she had “learned not only about the subject

PROPERTY/RENTALS

area but about myself too” ahead of her progression to a Nursing studies degree next year. Another graduate, Josh O’Reilly of the Pre-University Arts Programme, highlighted that a PLC Course is an excellent route to both employment and Higher Education. Josh also thanked teachers and support staff for being “some of the most helpful and caring people I have ever met”. Both students indicated that their studies including the integrated work placement in industry had significantly helped them on their career area, and gaining access to their respective Nursing and Digital Humanities degree programmes. Graduates qualified from an array of disciplines with individual talent and hard work being recognised within each course. The Michael Morgan Award, an award that is bestowed to a student who

consistently demonstrates enthusiasm and a caring attitude towards others, was awarded to David Shelley, a 2019 graduate of Information Technology. David was commended for his continual dedication to his studies, his eagerness to help others and the positive outlook on life. We wish him every success in the future. Luke Murphy, a 2019 graduate in Sports, Exercise & Coaching, was the well-deserved winner of the Sports Person of the Year, and was thanked for all his hard work in leading the OFI Soccer Team to the Colleges and Universities Football League final. The Principals Award was awarded to Laura McSkane, a graduate of Health Care Support who has made an invaluable contribution to OFI’s college community throughout the year. We are proud to count her among our alumni.

Old Dundalk Society Lecture The Old Dundalk Society is delighted to announce the first of its summer lectures of the 2019 season. The lecture will take place in St Nicholas’s Parish Church (Green Church) on Wednesday May 29 commencing at 7pm. The event will include, a tour of the church and graveyard. The

church was built circa 1226 but it has been altered and repaired many times over the years. As you will see from the plaque inside the church it was restored in 1707 after the wars of the seventeenth century. The spire was erected in 1787 to the design of Francis Johnston. The graveyard was closed for burials

in 1896. The oldest tomb is that of Thomas Field who died in 1536. This is a rare opportunity to visit this historic church and graveyard, please assemble inside the church on arrival. Patrons are advised to come early, as there is limited capacity available at the lecture venue.

Summer arrived for children from Dundalk and beyond as they enjoyed the May monthly kids club at Marshes Shopping Centre on Saturday. There was loads happening to keep children entertained at the free kids club which runs on the last Saturday of each month at the food court. “This event is a great opportunity for kids to have a super time,” said Aoife Kerley of Marshes Shopping Centre.

Louth athletes to the fore at National Track and Field The County Louth men’s and women’s teams got off to a superb start in this year’s National Track and Field League when the first round was staged at the Mary Peters Track in Belfast on Sunday, 19 May. For the second successive year the women’s team is plying its trade in the top-tier Premier Division while the men’s team is operating out of Division One. The men finished second in the points table in Belfast and lie in third place overall. The women did even better by coming out on top in Belfast and they also lie in third place overall. This puts both teams in a very strong position to be among the top eight teams overall after the second round on 30 June and hence to qualify for the final in Tullamore on 20 July. The stars of the show for the Wee County were teenagers Kate O’Connor and Aoibhín McMahon, both of whom were making their debut for the county senior team. The former won the 200m and Long Jump in some style while the latter enjoyed an impressive double victory in the Shot Putt and Javelin. John Kierans won the Shot

made up of visitors from Mayo and Dublin. The winning quartet laid the foundation for their victory on the front nine which they covered in 54pts as they dovetailed brilliantly to produce seven point return on the index one fourth and gained six points on seven of the remaining eight holes. They had another four six point holes on the back nine as they came home with a steady 46pts. The Junior Scratch Cup has

been rescheduled for Saturday, July 6. It will be played on the same date as the Minor and Intermediate Scratch Cups and will be played over 18 holes. Presentation night at golf club A presentation night was held in the clubhouse on Sunday evening for all the winners during what was another very successful Open Week. One of the best performances of the week came in Thursday’s Four Man Team competition which saw the team of Willie McKeever (17), M Markey (18), John McKeever (13) and JC McKeever (14) score 100pts as they finished eight points clear of the second placed team which was

Dundalk/Carlingford electoral area following the successful campaigns from Erin McGreehan and Sean Kelly. The duo take up the seats of Peter Savage and Mark Dearey who decided not to put themselves up for reelection this time around.

There was little change in Dundalk South with all seven sitting councillors retaining their seats including Sinn Fein’s Ruairi O’Mhurchu who had been co-opted into the council following the decision of Kevin Meenan to step down in 2017. Sinn Fein’s poor performance nationally

was reflected locally as well with the party dropping from ten seats to seven. In Ardee Dolores Minogue and Colm Markey were both reelected following the first count while there was also good news for independent candidate Hugh Conlon who won the sixth and final seat after the ninth count. It

was an especially sweet victory for Hugh who agonisingly missed out last time around by just over 20 votes to Jim Tenanty. The new council will be made up of seven Fianna Fail members, seven Sinn Fein, five Fine Gael, six independents, three labour and one from the Green Party.

Majority support legislation to lower whiplash court payouts Almost 70% of Irish motorists support the introduction of legislation designed to lower court payouts relating to whiplash injuries, a recent survey has found. In response to an AA Car Insurance survey of over 4,000 motorists, 68.79% of respondents indicated that they would strongly support such a measure being taken. Meanwhile, a further 21.19% stated they would be somewhat supportive of such legislation being introduced, with just over 3% of respondents stating they would be opposed to such a move. “When you compare compensation awards in Irish courts to those in other countries, for example the United Kingdom, there is noticeable issue with awards here being out of line with the extent of the injury suffered. Unfortunately, some people do suffer legitimate whiplash injuries, or much worse as a result of a car accident and these people deserve to be fairly compensated. However, we do need to look at steps that can be taken to bring Irish awards in line with international standards,”

Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “In terms of efforts to combat high car insurance costs, it is fair to say that excessive injury payouts in some instances is only one factor in a much wider problem. Unfortunately, we do have a problem with people opting to bypass the Personal Injuries Assessment Board in the hopes of securing a higher payout in court and this issue needs an urgent fix.” Meanwhile, in relation to compensation for non-whiplash injuries, the survey found that a smaller majority of respondents were in favour of steps being taken to limit court awards. When asked to exclude compensation for whiplash injuries, 54.74% of those surveyed stated they would strongly support

government measures designed to lower court compensation payouts, with a further 28.54% indicating they would be somewhat supportive of this approach. “Where court awards are concerned, it does appear that there’s at least a minor schism in people’s attitudes for compensating those who supper whiplash injuries compared to those who suffer non-whiplash injuries in an accident. Ultimately, irrespective of the nature of the injury, those with a legitimate grievance deserve to be fairly compensated for any earnings lost as well as medical costs,” Faughnan added. “However, in the majority of cases, there really should be no need for the courts to be involved in order to agree a fair settlement.”
