A NUMBER of Dundalk athletes took part in last Sunday’s record breaking London Marathon which saw 31 year old Kenyan athlete Sabastian Sawe achieve sporting immortality by becoming the first ever man to run a sub 2 hour marathon.

Even getting to the starting line is an achievement in what is considered one of the most popular marathons in the world. Over one million people applied to run in this year’s London Marathon with only about 40,000 getting their chance to run in the famous race. A number of people from Dundalk including a host of North East Runners members, completed the race including Brendan Howard, Zoe Nevin, Brenda Hill and her son Sean, Janet Holdcroft

and Ronan Halpenny.

73 year old Brendan Howard only took up running a decade ago but he soon got bitten by the racing bug and on Sunday he completed his 6th marathon which he described as his most enjoyable yet. Brendan, originally from St Mary’s Road in Dundalk but now living in Blackrock says he has never experienced encouragement from any crowds like he did in London.

“It’s hard to do this event justice,” stated Brendan. “From a running point of view, it was my slowest marathon, but as a spectacle, it was by miles the most enjoyable. The heat got to me quite a bit (most of my training was in 6-8 degrees , and we were running in 19). At the half way point, I decided to take it easier and enjoy it all.

“It was superbly organised. Loads of water stops, spray showers,

and ice on the course.

Hundreds of thousands of Londoners willing you on - I never experi-

enced anything like it and probably will never again. And if you reacted to the crowds, they screamed your name louder.

“Fantastic sights throughout - you sometimes just had to stop to take it all in.

Highest point was seeing Marguerite and Clara, Cameron, and my great friend Barry (who ran it himself last year) many times on the route- as well as many other townies supporting other Dundalk runners - Janet, Zoe and Brenda. A wonderful, exhausting, overwhelming day. If you ever get a chance of doing it - grab it!,” concluded Brendan.

Meanwhile Zoe Nevin from the North East Runners smashed her Personal Best by a massive 17 and a half minutes as she crossed the line in 4 hours and three seconds. Zoe also revealed she managed to raise an impressive €4000 for charity.

“The London Marathon was my 7th marathon but my first world major marathon and a new personal best of 4:00:03 which was 17 minutes 30 seconds faster than my previous best. I loved every second, didn’t stop smiling from start to finish.

“The crowd was unreal, nothing compares. The shouts of encouragement from family’s and friends really helped to keep you going. A big highlight for me was passing Daddy Pig and Joe Wicks on the course,” laughed Zoe.

“I was lucky to have my family and friends supporting me around the course. I think my mam had bought every Irish flag there was in the town so I could spot them within the crowds. With fellow North East Runners Club members running as well there was a

great buzz amongst us all.

“I had the opportunity to raise money for Cork University Hospital Intensive Care Unit, one of the few Irish based charities that offers spots to run London. In total I raised over €4,000 euro.

“My next goal is the

Sydney Marathon in August of this year, it will be my second time running it but the first time as an Abbott major but it’s gonna be hard to top London 2026,” conclude Zoe.

The fastest local home was Sean Hill who completed the race in an impressive time of 2:46:59. This was Sean’s first major marathon and he was determined to enjoy the occasion as is seen with his posts on Instagram with videos he took of himself and the crowds as he ran in the race. Sean’s mother Brenda, who is also the event director at Dundak Parkrun

also completed the race in just over 4 hours. A proud Brenda said this was her first (and last!) marathon and that she was delighted to be able to do it with her son. Congratulations also to Janet Holdcroft and Ronan Halpenny who also completed the race.

Move to link DkIT with Queen’s described as ‘historic’

FIANNA Fáil TD for Louth, Erin McGreehan, has said it is a “historic day” for the county as legislation to formally link Dundalk Institute of Technology with Queen’s University Belfast is being brought to Cabinet.

Under the proposals, students enrolling in DkIT from September 2026 will study within Queen’s academic and quality assurance frameworks and will graduate with a Queen’s University Belfast degree or postgraduate qualification.

Speaking on the announcement, Deputy McGreehan said:

“This is a big step forward. As Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, I am looking forward to having this discussed at length in the Committee. It is a huge privilege to be leading this in the Committee and being responsible for bringing legislation through.

“This officially makes Louth home to the first all island university. The opportunities this will create for students in Louth cannot be overstated.

“To deliver for the future

of Ireland, we need to be ambitious for our universities and third level institutions, and today’s move is a clear example of that ambition.

“The economic and development benefits for Louth will be significant, helping to attract top academic talent, increase activity in Dundalk and open up opportunities that only a university presence can provide right here on our doorstep.

“Louth has grown in size and regional importance in recent years, and this development further strengthens that progress.”

McGreehan meets Minister to push for interim flood measures in Louth

FIANNA Fáil TD for Louth, Erin McGreehan, has this week met with the Minister of State responsible for the Office of Public Works, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, to press the need for interim, short-term flood defence measures following meetings with residents along the Co. Louth coastline from North Louth to Baltray in the south.

During the meeting, Deputy McGreehan raised concerns about the ongoing and increasing flood risk along the Louth coastline and called for immediate action.

Speaking after the meeting, she said: “What I am calling

for is that the OPW and Government use the significant investment committed to flood relief to also deliver interim measures. These short-term interventions are essential to mitigate flood damage and provide protection for households and businesses while longer term solutions are being developed.

“We need to begin preparing now for the coming winter season. We cannot wait to react again next January. Interim measures must begin early in the year to allow time for works to be completed before weather conditions become more unpredictable.

“I will be working with the local authorities in the coming months to support their engagement with the Department and the Minister, so that they can get the resources needed to deliver these interim measures.”

It had been previously confirmed by the Minister that €154.1 million has been committed to flood relief works in County Louth, with projects in Ardee, Drogheda and Carlingford progressing at various stages.

Deputy McGreehan welcomed this investment but said the focus must now also turn to interim measures.

“Significant funding has been committed to reduce the impact of flooding and coastal erosion, but these works are at different stages of development.

“What communities need now are measures that bridge the gap between immediate risk and the completion of long-term solutions.”

“In the long term, these projects will help protect the coastline, but there is an immediate need for interim measures that can be delivered in the coming months ahead of autumn.

Murder of Seamus Ludlow highlighted by Ó Murchú at Sinn Féin Ard Fhéis

THE upcoming 50th anniversary of the murder of Seamus Ludlow, along with the recent anniversary of the Dundalk bombing, were highlighted at the Sinn Féin Ard Fhéis in Belfast at the weekend by Louth TD Ruairí Ó Murchú.

The Dundalk deputy was speaking in support of motions 73, which called for a public inquiry into the murder of Seán Brown; and 91 which called for an historical investigations unit in the South to deal with unresolved cases related to the legacy of the conflict, including those involving collusion.

Deputy Ó Murchú will be the main speaker at a special 50th anniversary event at Thistlecross on Saturday May 2 at 7pm to commemorate Dundalk man Seamus Ludlow.

At the Ard Fhéis, Deputy Ó Murchú said: “We remember Hugh Watters and Jack Rooney who were mur-

dered by the Glenanne Gang in the Dundalk bombing of December 19 1975 and also Seamus Ludlow, who was murdered by British forces on May 2 1976.

“While we want justice from the British government, we have to make sure that the Southern state that collaborated with those who killed our people is taken to task for how it has failed these families then and

is failing them now.

“We have to continue to deliver a united Ireland and we have to deliver justice for our people”.

Deputy Ó Murchú also spoke in support of Ard Fhéis motion 92, which called for sufficient policing to keep communities safe.

He said: “We are all about building safer communities that have the resources and policing needed, particu-

larly in places which have been forgotten about and failed by Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael for generations.

“It is about ensuring that have proper community policing and we deal with the issues of anti-social behaviour, drug dealing and all the criminal elements like those engaged in drug debt intimidation that utterly puts pressure on our people and our

communities

“It is unacceptable that this would continue. We need better resourced policing and community policing alongside early intervention for families, and working alongside groups who help young people who fall into criminal actions on the basis of being groomed by those who have had their foot on the neck of our communities for far too long”.

COUNCIL RESPONDS TO SIGNIFICANT

ILLEGAL DUMPING INCIDENT NEAR ARDEE

LOUTH County Council is aware of significant illegal dumping at Shanliss, just outside Ardee. Council crews have been deployed to the area and clean-up works are underway. The illegally dumped material includes oil drums, which will be collected and disposed of in accordance with all relevant environmental and waste management regulations.

The incident is being investigated by Louth County Council’s Litter Wardens. Ille-

gal dumping is an offence, and those found responsible risk prosecution, fines and conviction through the courts. Anyone who may have information in relation to this incident is encouraged to contact Louth County Council directly.

The Council reminds the public that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility and that everyone has a legal obligation to manage their waste correctly. It is an offence to hire or engage a person to re-

move waste unless that person is an authorised waste collector holding the required permits. Responsibility for waste remains with the householder or business that generated it, and using an unpermitted operator may result in prosecution, fines, and liability for the proper disposal of the waste. A list of authorised waste collectors is available from the National Waste Collection Permit Office at www.nwcpo.ie.

Commemorating the 85th Anniversary of the Belfast Blitz

THE Old Dundalk Society is pleased to invite you to the second lecture in its Spring 2026 series. The event will take place at the County Museum Dundalk on Friday 1st May, commencing promptly at 7.30 pm. (Note earlier time of Lecture).

Join us for a special lecture marking the 85th anniversary of the Belfast Blitz, recalling the extraordinary response of fire brigades from Dundalk, Dublin, Dún Laoghaire, and Drogheda who travelled north to assist during the devastating air raids of 1941.

The speakers on the night will be Jim Kerley (Dundalk) local historian and retired fireman, and Mark Wigton (Belfast) who is the Outreach

Officer at the Northern Ireland War Memorial Museum in Belfast, which is a Home Front Exhibition telling the story of Northern Ireland’s role in the Second World War.

The Dundalk based historic fire engine the Merryweather travelled to assist with the relief efforts in Belfast during the German blitz of the city.

After the talk you can visit the Merryweather which will be on display in the Museum courtyard (all day long), along with other artifacts from the second world war.

As space is limited at the venue, we recommend arriving early to avoid disappointment. Voluntary contributions are welcome at the door. Light refreshments will be served.

Dundalk Darkness Into Light get ready to celebrate ten years of fundraising

DUNDALK Darkness Into Light are putting the final touches to what will be their tenth event in Dundalk and organisers are hoping people locally can get out on Saturday May 9th and support the event.

Anyone is available to come along and participate in this admirable movement taking place which supports those who have been affected by suicide. The unique event takes place at 4:15am at the DkIT college campus and will see participants walk down the Dublin Road towards town before taking a right down the Avenue Road, another right at the bottom of the Avenue Road taking walkers past the retail Park before taking a final right turn to go up through Muirhevnamor and back to DkIT.

To date the event has raised an impressive €362,652 in total with some of that money used to set up a dedicated Pieta House counselling service in town. The service takes place in the Redeemer Resource Centre four days a week and offers professional, confidential counselling for those experiencing suicide ideation or selfharming behaviours.

Orla Sheridan who is on the organising committee alongside Cllr Sean Kelly, Donna Conroy, Katie Bailey and Siobhan Shaw says that all involved are excited and proud to host the tenth staging of the event.

“We started in 2017 and this will be our tenth event and I think anybody who has attended a Darkness Into Light event knows that there is something moving and special about it. The fact that it takes place at 4:15 just as the light is beginning to come through is very symbolic and there is a real sense of togetherness from everybody who takes part and

walks the route together.

“This year we will have plenty of entertainment including the Redemptorist Gospel Choir, Dundalk Ukulele Band and Zara Woods who sings the beautiful song ‘I’m Okay’ which was released recently to encourage acceptance around autism.

“We are proud to have raised over €350,000 to date and that money has had tangible results locally with the opening last year of Pieta House in the Redeemer Resource Centre. The money we raise will help keep these counselling services open locally as well as an online text service. We know the system is

failing people and we know we can’t fix it ourselves but by raising money and by funding counselling services locally we can help make things a little bit better,” explained Orla.

“Normally we have about 2-2,500 people take part and as always I would just like to tell people to come on down even if you are not registered. Come down, and be a part of something special and if you don’t want to do the walk you can just sit down and have a cup of tea or coffee or help us out on the grounds of DkIT as we set everything up. We want as many people there as possible to celebrate our tenth event and help raise money for a very important cause. Unfortunately 1 in 5 people have been affected by suicide and we need to try and help people who are feeling depressed or who are in need of help. If we can help make a difference for even one person it will have been worthwhile,” added Orla.

Thursday, 30 April 2026 is National Voter Registration Day, a nationwide initiative designed to encourage voter registration and strengthen democratic participation across Ireland, with a particular focus on young people, minority groups and disadvantaged communities.

To mark the day, Louth County Council will host voter registration drives at Dundalk Library and Drogheda Library, with council staff available from 10.00am to 1.00pm to assist members of the public.

The registration drives are open to anyone who wishes to register to vote for the first time or to update their details on the Register of Electors. Those who have recently changed address or name, newly become eligible to vote, or who have not voted in some time are particularly encouraged to check their registration status.

Speaking ahead of National Voter Registration Day, Cllr Seán Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council highlighted the importance of participation in democratic life:

“Registering to vote is one of the most important ways people can have their say in the future of their community and their country. Civic participation begins with being on the register, and I strongly encourage everyone, particularly young people and those who may not have engaged before, to take this simple but vital step.”

David Conway, Chief Executive of Louth County Council also emphasised the central role democracy plays in local government:

“Democracy is core to everything we do in local government and is one of the Council’s principal values. The Register of Electors underpins fair representation and accountable decision-making. I would encourage everyone to engage fully in their civic obligation by ensuring they are registered to vote and that their details are up to date.”

Louth County Council maintains the Register of Electors for the county, with the Louth register recognised as one of the most accurate in the country.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend one of the registration drives in Dundalk or Drogheda on National Voter Registration Day, or to check and update their details online at www.checktheregister.ie.

LOUTH COUNTY COUNCIL CONDEMNS MISUSE OF LIFEBUOYS

LOUTH County Council have strongly condemned recent incidents in Ardee, where lifebuoys were deliberately removed from their stands and thrown into the River Dee.

As a result, the Council had to request assistance from Boyne Fishermen’s Rescue and Recovery, who retrieved the lifebuoys from the water.

A lifebuoy is a vital piece of life-saving equipment, and its presence can mean the difference between life and death in an emergency.

Removing or tampering with a lifebuoy is an act of vandalism that puts lives at risk and shows a total disregard for the safety of the local community.

If a lifebuoy is missing when someone is in distress in the water, the consequences could be fatal.

Cllr Seán Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, said: “This be-

haviour is reckless and unacceptable. Lifebuoys are there to save lives, and every lifebuoy taken out of place puts people at real risk and wastes the time of

volunteer rescue services.

“In this case, this diversion of emergency resources was entirely avoidable, and I would ask those responsible to stop

immediately and think about the danger they are causing.”

Louth County Council is fully committed to water safety across all waterways and locations in the county. Anyone who witnesses interference with lifebuoys is encouraged to report it immediately to the relevant authorities.

Darver Dromiskin Youth Club Dazzle in Carlow!

THIRTEEN girls from Darver Dromiskin Foroige youth club travelled to the George Bernard Shaw Theatre in Carlow over the weekend to represent Louth in the Foroige Got Talent Finals.

A dedicated hardworking group, the girls showcased a vibrant and energetic dance routine to the Greatest Showman song. They competed against other talented participants from around Ireland and placed 2nd in the Dance category.

Weeks of practice with dance teacher Katie paid off, great friendships and memories were made.

For many of the girls this was their first time dancing and being on stage—hopefully, it won’t be their last!

Well done to everyone involved, from friends and family to the local community and the Club Leaderseveryone is very proud of their accomplishments!

Political Advisory Group

LOUTH County Council hosted the first quarterly meeting of the Dublin Belfast Economic Corridor (DBEC) Political Advisory Group for 2026 on 23 April, bringing together elected members, Chief Executives, senior local authority officials and key university partners from across the region.

Chief Executive of Louth County Council, David Conway, welcomed members to the county and highlighted Louth’s central role within the Corridor:

“Louth sits at the centre of the Dublin Belfast Economic Corridor, and that position brings real opportunity.

We see the benefits of that every day, but we also understand what is required to fully realise it — sustained investment in infrastructure, stronger links between education and industry, and the ability to attract and retain talent.

Being part of the Corridor strengthens our ability to deliver on these priorities. It enhances Louths platform to compete, to collaborate at scale, and to continue attracting investment, supporting business growth and creating high-quality jobs.”

The meeting also focused on advancing key collaborative projects across the Corridor, with a strong emphasis on circular economy initiatives and skills development aligned with real industry demand.

Cancer Health Roadshow

NEXT week, the Irish Cancer Society’s ‘Your Health Matters’ Roadshow will be in the Marshes Shopping Centre, Dundalk, Co. Louth from 10am to 5pm on Wednesday May 6th and Thursday May 7th, free of charge.

Members of the public are invited to come along for free to speak with our specialist cancer nurses to ask any questions they may have and seek support and advice.

Pop down and have a chat with one of our nurses - no booking is required, just walk in. Available at the Roadshow are free blood pressure checks, body mass index (BMI) and carbon monoxide (CO) readings and information on cancer prevention, screening, and ways to help spot the early signs of cancer. A referral for a GP can also be arranged where further help is required.

Early detection and diagnosis of cancer is essential to improve health outcomes. When cancer is diagnosed early, it can improve the quality of life of those living with cancer, increase survival and reduce the severity of treatment. Many patients find it difficult to or do not attend GP visits even when they are experiencing potential cancer symptoms.

The ‘Your Health Matters’ Roadshow initiative seeks to change this by promoting positive lifestyle changes, increasing awareness of cancer symptoms, and improving medical care-seeking behaviour for the early signs of cancer.

In 2025, the roadshow travelled to 20 different locations around the country, engaging with over 29,900 people about the signs and symptoms of cancer.

“HERMOVES” PROGRAMME DELIVERED TO ST VINCENT’S

A SUCCESSFUL sixweek sports initiative, delivered through the Sport Ireland Her Moves programme, has recently concluded in Dundalk, showcasing the impact of inclusive and student-led approaches to increasing girls’ participation in physical activity. The project was a collaborative effort between DKIT, Louth Local Sports Partnership, St. Louis Dundalk, and St. Vincent’s Dundalk, with third-year students from the BA (Hons) in Sports, Exercise and Enterprise programme playing a central role in its delivery.

Guided by the Her Moves philosophy of “finding what moves you,” the programme prioritised enjoy-

ment, choice, and confidence-building over competition. Participants engaged in a wide range of multi-sport activities

in a supportive and encouraging environment, helping them to discover activities they enjoy while developing new skills and social

connections. The initiative reflects the core Her Moves principles of empowering young women, fostering positive experiences of

Adrian gets behind Girls in Green with new World Cup song

Malone has been inspired by the Girls in Green as they bid to qualify for next year’s Soccer World Cup in Brazil. The Irish team have started well in their bid to qualify and are third in their group after back to back wins against Poland. It’s been an excellent year for Ireland so far and they are guaranteed a place in the World Cup play-offs but are still in with a chance of winning the group, which would earn automatic qualification to next year’s tournament in Brazil.

Adrian Malone has been following their journey and was inspired to write a song to support the ladies team entitled ‘Samba Happy Irish Times’. The track is getting some air play on local and national radio stations gaining momentum. Last weekend Adrian launched the track in Corbetts Bar. According to Adrian the core aims of the project are to support and celebrate the Girls in Green, recognising their

achievement in reaching their second consecutive World Cup.

To generate positive energy, unity, and national pride among young people, especially at a time when uplifting messages are needed across the country.

To use music as a universal language that removes barriers, raises collective vibration, and brings communities together.

To unite teens and youths across Louth and beyond, including schools in Dundalk, Drogheda, and sur-

rounding areas, regardless of sporting background — rugby, Gaelic, soccer, tennis, or golf.

To foster inclusivity and shared identity, encouraging young people to stand together in support of our national team. need and also a youth development fund focused on girls’ soccer, rugby, basketball, and golf, which will be managed via a group community account by the Dundalk Credit Union in an open and fully transparent way.

The Dundalk Credit Union have contributed a cheque for €200 in support of the initiative.

According to Adrian this gesture reflects the strong community backing already forming around the project and reinforces the positive impact it aims to create.
