The village of Blackrock will come to a standstill when the country pays tribute to fallen hero Capt Mark Duffy at his funeral takes tomorrow (Thursday).

The body of Rescue 116 pilot Mark was found in the wreckage of the Irish Coast Guard helicopter last Friday evening in the cockpit of stricken helicopter off Blackrock island, 13km from the coast of Mayo.

That brought to an end an agonising wait for his Mark’s family – wife Hermione and children, Esmé and Fionn.

A huge crowd is expected to pay respects to Mark at his funeral Mass which will be held at 11am in St Oliver Plunkett Church, Blackrock.

James Larkin, the officer in charge of the Coast Guard

unit in Greenore, spoke of Capt Duffy as a “gentleman” and said he was happy for the family that Mark’s body had been recovered.

“I’m delighted for Mark’s family that they have some sort of closure with the recovery of his body while I am also very mindful of the fact that not all crew members have been recovered. My thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the families of the two missing men, Paul and Ciaran.

“The recovery of Mark’s body will hopefully go some way to help his family deal with this awful tragedy. He was a real gentleman and he’ll be greatly missed” stated James.

Local men, Stephen and Sean Casey, are taking on the challenge of running a marathon to raise funds for the hospital that helped care for their late brother.

Ciaran Casey was only 37 when he passed away suddenly back in 2015.

The popular Dundalk man was well known locally for his work as a bus driver with Bus Eireann and his prowess on the football field where he lined out for Bellurgan FC. A native

of Muirhevnamor, Ciaran played football with Bellurgan Utd and played just days before his death on January 23, 2015. The married father of one was rushed to Richmond ICU in Beaumont hospital after suffering a brain haemorrhage and died a short time later.

Ciaran’s brothers Sean and Stephen are currently training hard as they prepare for the Belfast marathon which they are running to raise funds for the Richmond ICU. Accord-

ing to Stephen the brothers decided they wanted to give something back to the Intensive Care Unit who treated Ciaran and his family with the utmost care and respect.

“We started to think about doing something over Christmas and it was Sean who suggested that we try and run a marathon.

Neither of us have ever run a marathon before so it’s a pretty big challenge for us but we’ve been training hard and thanks to Jim Gonnelly in the North-

East Runners we’ll at least be in some sort of decent shape when the marathon comes around on Monday May 2.

“The aim is to raise €5000 for the Richmond ICU in Dublin. When Ciaran was brought into them they were absolutely amazing.

“The kindness and consideration they showed us is something that was hugely appreciated by the whole family and we wanted to acknowledge the great work they do by

trying to raise some money for them,” stated Stephen.

To date almost €2500 has been kindly donated online and €1000 through card sponsorships on behalf of Ciaran. Ciaran’s club Bellurgan FC have also decided to host a 5-aside competition in May in memory of Ciaran.

Many tributes have been paid to Mark not only for his selfless work as a member of the Irish Coastguard, but as a devoted family man and community

worker.

Mark is also survived by mother Sheila, brothers Gavan and Donard, step-father Peter, sistersin-law Annemarie and Sophie, his uncles, aunts and wider family circle.

A remotely operated submersible robot spent much of the evening cutting away some of the cockpit to allow access before Naval Service divers were sent down to free the pilot’s remains.

His remains were brought ashore before being transferred to a hearse. The coffin was then driven away from the pier with a lone piper leading the cortege.

Guard personnel, and others involved in the search and recovery over the last 12 days, formed a guard of honour.

Rescue 116 crashed close to Blackrock island in the early hours of 14 March. The rescue helicopter was on its way from Dublin to Blacksod, Co Mayo to refuel before it joined an operation to assist in the medical evacuation of a fishing vessel.

It’s captain, Dara Fitzpatrick, was found on the morning of the accident but later lost her life.

The bodies of Paul Ormsby and Ciarán Smith have yet to be located.

Gardai make appeal for information on stolen car Gardai investigating a number of break-ins have called on members of the public to report any suspicious behaviour.

On Thursday March 23, a car was stolen following a break-in to a house on the Newry Road in Dundalk. The spare key of a black Chevrolet hatch-back was taken between 1pm and 6.30pm and the car was driven away. Gardai are appealing for the information on the car with a 11 LH registration.

Two days later a car was damaged in Greenacres in what Gardai believe was an attempt to steal the vehicle.

Between 2pm and 6pm the Nissan Micra was moved about 10m and the window dam-

aged. Investigating officers are asking anyone who saw the incident to come forward.

On Friday March 24 at 3am Gardai received a report of two males interfering with cars at Hoey’s Lane. When they arrived at the scene they stopped two men who were subsequently charged and will appear in court in April.

Gardai are also asking for help in identifying a man who was seen at the back of a house in Thomas St on

Tuesday March 21. A woman in the house looked out her back window and saw the man wearing a dark hoodie and grey tracksuit bottoms, while he had his face covered.

When she shouted at him, he ran off.

Anyone who saw a male fitting that description in the area is asked to come forward.

Meanwhile, officers in Ardee are seeking to identify a male and female who stole a woman’s purse on Thursday last.

The woman was outside a supermarket on the Dublin Road when approached and when she was distracted by one, the other took her purse. She was unable to give a description.

St.Vincent’s students with their hosts on a recent exchange to Mont de Marsan and Bordeaux

It was certainly ‘Vive La France’ this month in St.Vincent’s school when the French Department celebrated ‘La Semaine Francaise’, or French Week in style with a wide range of activities to promote the language.

First year classes brought wonderful colourful designs to the corridors as they decorated their classroom doors and entrances with images inspired by French movies as well as taking part in a table quiz in French.

Second and fifth years enjoyed the hugely entertaining and interactive play featuring a production by a predominantly French theatre company. Junior students also indulged in the

ever-popular French breakfast which was organised by transition year students who served up refreshments such as croissants and pain au chocolat.

The highlight of the event was undoubtedly an exchange for senior students to Bordeaux and Mont de Marsan for one week, where the girls got a sample of life in a French Lycée. Teacher Gaelan O’Comain explained, ‘They stayed with host families and this allowed for a complete immersion in the French language, while the time spent in the Lycée Despiau gave them an invaluable exposure to the Baccalaureate curriculum which is the equivalent of our Leaving

Certificate programme. This was a great opportunity for the girls to improve their oral and aural skills as well as soaking up the atmosphere and culture of this beautiful region.’

Have your say on a new National Plan for Ireland

Paddy Malone from the Dundalk Chamber of Commerce has people in Louth to have their say on a new National Plan for Ireland.

“Ireland 2040 – Our Plan”, the new National Planning Framework was launched earlier this year by the Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government, Simon Coveney and the Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

The major national consultation is designed to find out how we want our country to look by 2040 and anybody can submit a suggestion for improvements in their community before the deadline of Friday 31st March. According to Paddy the Chamber will be putting forward a submission outlining how much Louth as a county has to offer and putting forward their

Call for more dog waste bins on main streets

Cllr Maeve Yore has called for more to be done to combat the ongoing problem of dog fouling around town. Tough new bye laws were introduced last year to combat the problem of owners not cleaning up after their dogs but according to an answer to a question posed by Cllr Yore only nine fines have been issued thus far with none of those in Dundalk town centre.

According to Maeve more needs to be done to combat the issue of dog fouling around town.

I have been talking about this in council meetings for a long time now and I wholeheartedly agree

with traders around town who have pleaded for more dog waste bins on our main streets. It is very off putting to see dog poo on our main streets and I believe that the installation of more bins around town would help to alleviate the problem,” explained Maeve.

During this month’s Louth County Council meeting Cllr Yore asked the question “How many on the spot fines have been issued to dog owners who allow their dogs to litter in Dundalk, Drogheda, and Ardee and what date did LCC enact the dog bye laws on same?”

In reply to her question it was stated that “Since the enactment of the Dog Litter and Dog Control

Bye-laws, 2015 nine fines have been issued in relation to dog fouling under Section 22 of the Litter Pollution Act, 1997, all in the county area. It should be noted that the bye-laws address the specific issues of carrying an appropriate receptacle for dog foul, ensuring dog foul is disposed of in litter bins is suitably wrapped and addresses the keeping of dogs being exercised in a public place on a leash only. The Dog wardens have been focussing on making dog owners aware of the Bye-Laws since their enactment in March, 2016. The Council is now in the process of preparing the necessary documents to issue fines under the ByeLaws”.

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT) students are in an urgent need for cast members for their short film called “Eventuality”. It is currently being produced by final year students in the BA (HONS) Video & Film Production course and auditions are being held April 1 in Dundalk Institute of Technology.

The short film is on the topic of “Exploring the representation of working women in contemporary Irish cinema.” The story centres around an ambitious doctor whose career gets disturbed by pregnancy and how she has to make sure her professional and personal life do not clash.

The point these students are em-

phasising is that they wanted to represent more women working in Irish films who are successful and enjoy their job. They found through research that there is a lack of exactly this in Irish Cinema. The very topical and important issue of abortion in Ireland at the minute is also dealt with in the short film.

The filming dates are from April 18 to 21and the film locations will be in Dundalk includL ing Dundalk Institute of Technology. Council should make businesses aware of rates incentives

The Government’s rates overhaul won’t have too much of an effect for Louth business owners, is according to Dundalk Chamber of Commerce PRO Paddy Malone who says that the overhaul won’t have too much of an impact for Louth business owners.

New legislation which plans to overhaul Ireland’s ‘archaic rates system’ won’t have too much of an effect

on Dundalk business owners as Louth County Council already implements many of the suggestions being mooted by government minister Simon Coveney.

“To be fair to Louth County Council they have already implemented a number of incentives for rate payers in the county including the option of monthly instalments as well as a scheme which gives rate payers a discount if they pay by direct debit.

I would say that Louth is

probably ahead of the curve when it comes to helping out ratepayers when compared to other county councils.

“So while Simon Coveney’s overhaul may be of benefit to a lot of county councils I don’t think it’s going to make much difference in County Louth. Where I would criticise Louth County Council is that they have not advertised the incentives they are offering to rates payers.

The information was sent out in a circular once at the start

of the year and apart from that it’s buried somewhere on their website.

“They need to advertise to let people know what they are offering because I know for a fact a lot of business owners are not aware of their incentive scheme.

“Small and medium sized businesses are under pressure and have been for many years. We asked as far back as when Brian Cowen was Minister for Finance and subsequently Taoiseach that

Jackie and Maura raise over €6,000 for Irish Kidney Association

A local couple who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by holding a charity fundraiser have presented a cheque to the Irish Kidney Association.

Jackei and Maura Callan from Roche raised an impressive €6,200 at the party held in the Lisdoo.

Jackie, who is well-known in the area as a painter and decorator, explained that as he is on dialysis, they wanted to give something back to those who have been helping him.

Driver given ban and four-month sentence

A man who was convicted of driving without insurance for the eighth -time was disqualified for 15 years and sentenced to four months in priseon. ” James McGrath of Ardtullybeg, Riverstown, was stopped by Gardai -on May 31, 2015, and was found not dto have tax, NCT or insurance disrplayed. He failed to produce his documents and didn’t pay a fixed penalty enotice.

Solicitor, Eleanor Kelly, stated that the defendant claimed he was insured aon his father’s policy at the time. He -had certs to show he was covered for na number of years, but didn’t have gone to cover this period. She asked that the case be adjourned to allow him contact the insurance company.

However, Judge John Coughlan stated that the case had been adjourned on a number of occasions and that it would go ahead.

The court heard that Mr McGrath had 43 previous convictions, including seven for no insurance.

Ms Kelly pointed out that the defendant was a carer for his father who passed away in January and he believed he was insured. He had been banned for a number of years but had had his licence returned.

The solicitor asked that the prison sentence be suspended as he was a carer for his mother but Judge Coughlan refused. He also imposed a €15 fine.

The defendant lodge an appeal to the sentence.

Student taxi initiative

,A new student service that has been making its way across the entire country has now arrived in Dundalk.

Dash (Driving All Students Home) allows students to get taxis even when they have no cash, bank card or ephone while ensuring the drivers get paid.

Dash was invented by NUI Galway , students who tested it with taxi drivers in their city before officially launching in Galway and have already taken it to Carlow, Cork, Waterford and now Dundalk. The team of students will be rolling it out in all other college towns before making rthe platform available in Dublin. , Dundalk IT Student’s Union are the latest to join the initiative along with The Fives and Sevens Taxi

Companies. The drivers are currently being registered on the platform so the students of Dundalk will be able to avail of the service in the coming days. Dash aims to create an invisible safety network for students all over the country regardless of the contents of their pocket.

Students can sign up for free at http://www.projectdash.ie, upload an ID photo of themselves, add a bank card to pay for emergency taxis, and create a four-digit pin. The students then simply tell the taxi driver their name and Dash PIN number, which allows the driver to check their account on a driver app. Once the driver has verified the fare, the app then processes the payment upon arrival at the destination.

Upbeat Week at Ardee Community School Ardee Community School underlined the importance of health as they held their annual ‘Upbeat Wee’ from March 13 to 16.

This is organised by a committee of teachers who strive to promote a ‘’Healthy Body, Healthy Mind’’ initiative and it is aimed at students and teachers in order to improve everyone’s mental health and awareness of said.

Certain events take place in the morning time where students are greeted and welcomed to school. Music is played on the intercom at lunchtime and random acts of kindness are carried out.

For example, students are provided with smiley face stickers. There is also a joke of the day.

Special events are organised for specific year groups. First years took part in a treasure hunt around the school.

Second years attended a talk given by SOSAD. Third years took part in Yoga and a talk entitled ‘’BodyWhys’’. Fifth years were given the opportunity to partake in Zumba. Sixth years were treated to a pancake breakfast and a mindfullness session. There was also a silent disco for everybody in the school gym.

Many other events took place at breaktime including a staff tug of war.

Students and staff also took part in a much appreciated Tug of War Lunchtime Event on Monday March 13.

There was also a pop up café where fresh treats were baked and provided by

teachers, a fruit trolley, a photo booth, karaoke and board games in the Dalton Room and a ‘BestFriends’ Quiz.

Throughout Upbeat Week, students were invited to attend information talks Craig Englishby and Adam Grimes with Polish Students. on the issues of suicide awareness and prevention as well as healthy body image and well-being. These talks were kindly provided by SOSAD and BodyWhys.

There was a night for parents on March 13th. Two presentations were given on cyberbullying, internet safety and the law. These were delivered by Mr. Hugh McDonough.

Donations were made over the course of the week to SOSAD and the Dara Conlon Fund.

Bush school stages 4K run for charity

Students and teachers of Bush Post Primary School recently took part in the annual 4km Fun Run to celebrate “Well-Being Week”.

All students and teachers paid €2 each to participate in the race and all the funds were donated to the local respite centre. The whole school turned out for the event with the walkers leading the way around the Glenmore running track before taking off down the road towards Grange.

As the walkers sped away it was then time for the highly enthusiastic runners to take their mark at

the starting line. There were many places up for grabs such as the male and female winners of each year group and of course the keenly contested teacher’s race.

The run was intensely contested with the lead chopping and changing throughout. It all came down to the final stretch when Jack Murphy finished in first place shortly followed

by Joseph Quinn in second place and Tadhg Leahy in third place overall in the race. Some of the other winners on the successful day were Joseph Connor, Katie Mallon, Eoghan O’Connor and Damien Broderick who won the teachers race.

Niall claims the honours at Dundalk Golf Club event The finals of the Tiernan’s Centra Blackrock Winter League will take place on Sunday morning with 16 matches down for decision.

Following the fourth round of the League last Sunday, the top 32 players have been drawn to play each other over 18 holes with the top qualifier playing the last qualifier and so on. The pairings are below.

The 32 finalists will also be eligible to win the normal singles stableford competition.

The final will be matchplay stableford format with the total stableford points counting.

In the event of a tie the higher seeded player will win as there

will be no countback. The presentation to the 16 winners will take place at 1.15pm in the clubhouse.

The fourth round of the Winter League was won by six handicapper Niall McCaul who shot a nett 32pts and also managed to return the best gross score of the day with 28pts for the 13 holes.

The 13 hole format meant McCaul only had four shots at his disposal so it was an impressive round.

Another six handicapper, Billy Cairns, shot a total of 31pts to take the Category 1 honours while Ollie English (12) won Category 2 with 30pts

and Noel Reid (18) with 27pts claimed the Category 3 prize on countback.

The first Golfer of the Year competition for 2017 is the Gold Medal Qualifier which is scheduled for the weekend of April 8 and 9 and the timesheet for both days will open this Thursday, March 30, at 11am on the BRS System.

Entries are now being accepted for the club foursomes and club mixed foursomes competitions.

The entry fee is €10 and entries can be made via the entry box in the club bar. The closing date for entries is Monday, April 17 at 8pm.

Benny Devlin honoured

by Community Games Togher man Benny Devlin was honoured recently at a lunch in Athlone to celebrate the work of volunteers in the Community Games organisation.

Benny was involved in introducing the Community Games to Co. Louth – he still recalls the meeting in Castlebellingham at which the organisation was launched in the Wee County. Ever since then he has remained heavily involved at various levels – including that of his own local area, which encompasses Togher, Clogherhead and Termonfeckin.

He is currently President of Louth Community Games and has held many positions

on the committee over the years.

Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh, the renowned Gaelic games commentator, was the special guest of honour at the lunch in Athlone.

Fantastic performances at Bush Factor contest

It was the junior students of Bush Post Primary that stole the show at Bush Factor 2017 with first and second year students taking all the awards on the night.

Roisín Butterly won the talent show outright with her cover of the Les Miserables song “I Dreamed a Dream”.

Naomi McShane and Evelyn Donnelly finished in second place with their Taylor Swift inspired duet and First Year Jack Conway came in third place.

There were other fantastic singing performances from Jack Carville, Sophie Walker and Amie Murphy and an exceptional piano duet

by Tara Duffy and Megan Roddy, which were all widely praised by the three renowned judges.

All acts had put great effort into their performances and had come a long way from their first auditions, through to the semi-finals and then finally performing superbly in the Bush Factor Final.

There was an interval act from Cian McKeever and Leah Kirwan along with previous winners of

the Bush Factor competition, the dancing group.

After all seven student acts had finished and the interval was over, the second half of the show commenced with first year students taking centre stage in the class acts tournament. Following the four class acts the judges had a tough

choice on their hands to choose a winner. But, in the end they thought the class Donnard had done enough with their performance of the Beyoncé song “All the Single Ladies” for them to be awarded the trophy.

Finally, at the end of the night when the show was winding down the spectators were treated to a video recording of the teachers of Bush Post Primary performing a carpool karaoke to “Bohemian Rhapsody” which got a good response from the audience.

After the disappointment of Bush Factor 2016 not going ahead and the huge success of the show this year, Bush Factor will unquestionably, for the delight of many, continue to run for a number of years to come.

“Darkness into Light” comes to Dundalk

Dundalk is set to hold its very own “Darkness Into Light” event this summer. The sponsored run and walk which takes place during the night is an annual event with all proceeds donated to Pieta house, a service which aims to help those who feel suicidal.

Upon registration each person is given a ‘Darkness into Light Tshirt’ and are encouraged to wear it during their participation in the event.

The event has been taking place since 2009 where it started with roughly 400 people walking in the now iconic yellow T-shirts around a 5km course at the Phoenix Park.

It is not timed because it is not a race and it is estimated that it takes 25 minutes to run the route and roughly an hour to walk it Dundalk event organiser Sean Kelly explained why the event was so important and how it came about.

“Firstly we’re delighted that the event has come to Dundalk and it’s a very important initiative because the topic of suicide affects so many people with the North East and Louth region”.

“A committee was set up consisting of Sean, Helena Mullins, who is also this year’s PR representative and Bobby McCarthy.

Neasa claims All-Ireland Medal

Neasa Reilly, a second year student from St. Vincent’s Secondary School Dundalk, claimed a bronze medal following a magnificent performance in the All Ireland Schools Cross Country Championships held in Mallusk, Newtownabbey earlier this month.

Neasa now progresses to the SIAB Cross Country International in Wales when she will proudly represent her school and country. In a packed field of Ireland’s finest young athletes, Neasa got off to a quick start and then settled into third position in the 2.5km race. She maintained this position for the duration of the race in spite of stiff competition and the extreme muddy conditions of the Newtownabbey course.

The classy athlete executed a carefully planned strategy that would secure her place in the forthcoming international championships. While the race was won by Munster’s Aimee Hayde, Neasa did more than enough to establish her place as a medal winner, finishing well ahead of her friend and rival, Áine Kirwan who had pipped her on the line in Leinster finals earlier this year. Neasa was proudly cheered on by her dad (and coach) Fintan, mum Maeve, sisters, aunties, grandparents and teachers.

Although both productions are from the MAD Youth Theatres they are very different from each other in every way.

“Trapped” the production directed by Lewis Magee is set in a locked room with

ten people and they have no knowledge of how they got there or what connects them.

Together they have to find a way out but it’s not as easy as it seems. Watch the drama unfold and tension build as they start to run out of time and supplies as the days pass. They are then faced

with the question, will they succeed in escaping or be Trapped forever?

Barry Morgan’s play “The Party” looks at a whole range of issues that young people face without potentially boring the audience, by not making a Public Service Announcement about the dangers of drugs/sex etc.

This production is a complex, entertaining piece that makes you feel that it’s a situation that could happen in any party over Ireland, which the audience members of all ages hopefully will find very relatable.

The leader of Youth Theatre Geraldine Ball said “Devising is not easy and the process to make many ideas into one great one takes careful persuasion and decisiveness” and also stated that the directors “did a fantastic job in getting the young actors to produce something they all can be proud of and those who come to see it can enjoy. “ Tickets at the door cost €10, doors open at 7:30pm.

Coláiste Rís students step into the spotlight

The students of Coláiste Rís will take to the stage this April, for their annual Transition Year musical. This year’s performance will take you back to the 80s with the hit musical ‘The Wedding Singer’.

The musical follows Robbie Hart (Sean Hill), a singer who brings joy to others’ weddings, but faces catastrophe at his own. After losing all hope, he is enlisted to help Julia Sullivan (Rachel Ballantine), a young waitress, with her wedding, but quickly finds himself falling for her. The problem is that she’s already engaged to Glen (Cathal Purcell), a Wall Street business shark.

With the help of his bandmates Sammy (Fearghal Mulholland) and George (Phil Kirk), Julia’s friend Holly (Gráinne Byrne), as well as his hilarious grandmother Rosie (Grace Brosnan,) he has to figure out where his heart truly lies, before it’s too late!

Strike affects local commuters

Local commuters have been forced to find alternative methods of transport following Bus Eireann’s decision to begin an allout strike action. The strike commenced on Friday at midnight and according to union officials it will continue indefinitely until a solution can be found.

The strike action at the CIE subsidiary Bus Eireann has been on the cards for some time as talks between the company and the unions continue to break down without any resolution being found.

The industrial action was caused by threats of cutbacks in the lossmaking company including plans to close the local Bus Eireann de-

pot on the Ardee Road. Traffic on the roads was noticeably busier on Friday following the beginning of the strike. It is also expected that private bus operators as well as train services will see a lot more people use their services for the duration of the strike.

The strike is especially bad news for those living in rural areas who rely on a bus service to get in and out of town and according to Cooley councillor Peter Savage the strike has caused great difficulty with those living outside of the towns.

“Most people are trying to arrange alternative modes of transport for work and appointments or even just their weekly shop in Dundalk. It’s an inconvenience for many but I think they accept

that there is a genuine grievance from Bus Eireann workers and they are continuing to rearrange travelling arrangements until this gets sorted. Personally, I do not know how long this will take or what the solution is and if I did I’d be down at the meetings to fix this,” added Cllr Savage.

Although the strike action has caused headaches for many commuters thankfully schoolchildren are not affected as the school bus drivers will continue to work as normal. The state-owned transport company faced losses of €10 million last year. Bus Éireann says it needs to make changes to employee contracts to keep the company viable. In total there are an estimated 2200 Bus Eireann drivers currently on strike.

A man who pleaded guilty to drink driving and no insurance charges was disqualified from driving for a total of 12 years at Dundalk District Court.

Conor Boland of 45 Woodview Park, Castletown Road, Dundalk, stated that he acted in a “moment of madness” after a night out. The

by Gardai on September 17 last year.

Solicitor, Elaine Connolly, stated that the defendant had been out with friends at a nightclub and had too much on board, and that he had acted in a moment of madness.

lan imposed a threeyear disqualification for the drink driving, and a four-year ban and similar fine for dangerous driving.

In relation to the no insurance charge he imposed a five year disqualification and €75 fine. Other charges were taken into consideration.
