The village of Blackrock will come to a standstill when the country pays tribute to fallen hero Capt Mark Duffy at his funeral takes tomorrow (Thursday). The body of Rescue 116 pilot Mark was found in the wreckage of the Irish Coast Guard helicopter last Friday evening in the cockpit of stricken helicopter off Blackrock island, 13km from the coast of Mayo. That brought to an end an agonising wait for his Mark’s family – wife Hermione and children, Esmé and Fionn. A huge crowd is expected to pay respects to Mark at his funeral Mass which will be held at 11am in St Oliver Plunkett Church, Blackrock. James Larkin, the officer in charge of the Coast Guard
unit in Greenore, spoke of Capt Duffy as a “gentleman” and said he was happy for the family that Mark’s body had been recovered. “I’m delighted for Mark’s family that they have some sort of closure with the recovery of his body while I am also very mindful of the fact that not all crew members have been recovered. My thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the families of the two missing men, Paul and Ciaran. “The recovery of Mark’s body will hopefully go some way to help his family deal with this awful tragedy. He was a real gentleman and he’ll be greatly missed” stated James. Many tributes have been paid to Mark not only for his selfless work as a member of See Page 2
