A “brutal and futile” decision by the HSE to cut a training allowance for young people with disabilities, starting a course in Dundalk this week shows that “decency and humanity has been stripped from the system”, according to TD Imelda Munster.

The Sinn Féin representative slammed the HSE’s announcement cutting the Rehabilitative Training Allowance for attendees of the National Learning Network’s courses across the State, including at facilities at the Ramparts, Carroll Village

Participants on the course, which teaches living and social skills to school leavers with disabilities, were due to be given an additional €31.80 per week.

However, a decision by the HSE to cut the funding to new participants, including those in Dundalk, was made earlier this month in order to “reinvest in day services for people with disabilities”, according to the health service.

Naoise said she was “disappointed and angry” that her friends will have to do without the money she receives, even though they are on the same course.

“I know those who are going to start this week and they will not be getting the same money as me. That’s extremely unfair and I don’t understand why the decision was made.

“You need to have the extra money for the course, because we use it for social outings, lunches etc. Last week, we went to the plan-

Eileen said her older son, James, had received the training allowance for the course, but her 18-year-old son Kevin, who is due to

She said she is appalled that the Government had “targeted the most vulnerable again” and pointed out that this is the second decision in as many months that the HSE has tried to cut the help it gives to those with disabilities in the Northeast, citing the

now deferred decision to close Sruthán House.

“People with disabilities get little enough help as it is, without cutting this small, but vital allowance. When Kevin knew he was getting on the course, he said he would use some of the money to pay for a new phone. He was looking forward to using the money for the social events and trips that are part of teaching people how to look after their cash, how to budget, how to socialise and make plans,” stated Eileen.

Ms Munster said the HSE’s decision is “brutal and futile”, with the HSE’s own figures putting the savings at less than €13,000 a week.

‘This is yet another

attack on people with disabilities and is a tiny, tiny fraction of the €16 billion of the annual health budget. Yet again, we see penny pinching from the HSE when it comes to making cuts and they have the vulnerable in their crosshairs as usual.

“Instead of tackling the cost overruns and waste in other areas of the health service, such as the National Children’s Hospital, they decide to take this small, but much-needed tranche of cash away from those who need it. There was no warning, no consultation with those affected. It appears to me that all decency and humanity has been stripped from the system,” she concluded.

SMEs urged to prepare for Brexit

cllr Erin McGreehan has urged Small and Medium Enterprises to prepare for a Deal and a No-Deal Brexit. With the October 31 deadline approaching, business owners may have changes in reporting for exports and trade.

It was revealed through a Parliamentary Question by Fianna Fail Deputy Lisa Chambers that 50% of SMEs have not actively planned for Brexit. The Minster reported that their findings in the latest research suggest that planning for Brexit is increasing very modestly with only 50% of SMEs taking some form of active engagement (up from 42% in 2018) in the form of planning or any other mitigating steps.

Cllr McGreehan explained that it is particularly worrying when you see only half of businesses actively engaging to pre-

pare for Brexit.

“There are free workshops and training being provided to educate businesses locally and nationally and I urge businesses to avail of this training.

“Unfortunately, while the nature of the UK’s departure from the EU still remains to be determined, Brexit continues to represent a significant challenge for most businesses in Ireland and currently the exchange rates for our exporters are proving detrimental to their bottom line.

“It should be known that Skillnet Ireland has devised a free training programme which offers immediate and free training to Customs intermediaries, and to businesses that frequently trade with or through the UK. This programme is completely free and consists of five to seven days of instructor led

training delivered over an eight week period. Once the training is successfully completed, businesses can then apply for a €6,000 Skillnet grant per trainee (up to a maximum of 10) to help cover the additional costs associated with managing customs compliance following Brexit,” she explained.

Also LEO Louth is providing a Customs and Excise Workshop on the September 3. This workshop will cover how export and import customs procedures on trade with ‘third countries’ apply and how tariffs work. It will also cover how to correctly classify your goods.

Cllr McGreehan believes that is essential that companies prepare for procedural changes after Brexit and urges them to make use of the free but very important training’.

Dearey highlights need to embrace change for climate challenge

Local Green Party member, Mark Dearey, has called for people to embrace change in order to tackle the challenges to our climate.

Reacting to a recent UN report on the climate crisis, the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) stated clearly that land usage is having a direct and catastrophic impact on climate change. Land is a critical resource that is under increased pressure due to human activity.

In the same breath the report states that the aim to keep global warming below 2ºC can be achieved by reducing green house gas emissions from all sectors which including agriculture and food.

The impact for Ireland both locally and nationally is that the report seriously highlights and exposes the

Mark Dearey Government’s policies on climate change. The project Ireland 2040, and the national development framework which has been developed without a land use strategy fails to deal with issues raised by the IPCC report.

“I’m on record calling for a land use strat-

egy. We as a party have always called for this, but the Government didn’t see the need for it. It is business as usual with project Ireland 2040,” stated former green party councillor.

“The IPCC report really highlights the need for governments to better use land, to change

methods of transport and agricultural practices. For an urban town with surrounding rural communities we need to understand that much of the food produced on our land is for animal feed and a third of all food globally is wasted.

“The Government’s action fails miserably to tackle serious issues which are driving up carbon emissions. We need to be humble and change the national development framework and put in place a land use strategy, he continued.

“We must change how we use everything across all sectors. We need to manage the land better with strategic flooding methods.

We must work with farmers and keep rural communities alive. The current beef movement is important, its important farmers get a good price for quality food stated,” Mark added.

Young Irelands host 5k run Dundalk Young Irelands GFC and the Irish Association of Lourdes Volunteers held their second Fr John Mulligan 5k Fun Run in Dundalk on Saturday August 17.

The event started in sunshine but a downpour accompanied the non runners home. The numbers were on par with last

year despite the fact that many regulars were in Drogheda participating in or visiting the Fleadh Cheoil.

Severe damage caused to animal rescue premises

Members of the LSPCAhave been left devastated by the recent break in at the rescue kennels and offices in Dromiskin.

The LSPCA (Louth Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals) animal rescue was left destroyed when burglars broke in and smashed up the mobile home causing damage to the property.

Volunteer Shannon Farrell arrived first at the property, after initially checking on the animals she noticed the door to the mobile home opened and then discovered that the

office was door smashed in.

“The office door which has a double barrel lock, was smashed. They stole our brand-new CCTV system including the recording device.

The level of damage is disastrous. They pulled down the curtains, slashed the seats and floor. Everything was soaked in either bleach or steriliser and God knows what else,” stated Fiona Squib, the local LSPCA inspector.

The burglars appear to have taken their time to do maximum damage as no one heard the initially bang, neighbours assumed the noise was fireworks.

“The burglars took their time to toss dog food, juice, and the cut the backs of wellies.

“The main damage to the mobile home was the dismantling of pipes underneath the home which will require a plumber to fix. The burglars even stole the charger for the lawn mower,” stated Fiona.

“There has been some good as the response to this terrible news has been excellent. The general public have been very good by donating money to our go fund me page and donating food and bedding for the dogs. The support has been overwhelm-

ing.

“The Gardai are investigating the burglary and we do hope to get some news in time. Thankfully the animals were not touched or harmed during the break in as they are always our first concern,“ stated Fiona.

The LSPCA was established over 50 years ago.

Fiona Squibb is the current inspector and has been a volunteer for over 15 years.

Local winners at Comhaltas All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2019 in Drogheda was a busy time for many members of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Craobh Dhún Dealgan (Dundalk Branch of Comhaltas).

For four young branch musicians, Jaymee Martin, Donnchadh Hughes, Thomas McCahill and Fionnuala Donlon it was also a very joyous occasion as they featured among the prize winners in the music competitions.

Jaymee Martin was one of the youngest if not the youngest All Ireland Champion at the Fleadh. The nine year old from Dromiskin was the winner of the Under 12 Harp slow air competition.

Donnchadh Hughes from Blackrock won the Concert Flute competition in the 1518 age group and was also placed third in the flute Slow Air competition. Fionnuala Donlon from Greenwood Drive won the Senior Harp title. Thomas McCahill from the Point Road was awarded second place in the Under 12 Piano Accordion competition.

Donnchadh Hughes Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Craobh Dhún Dealgan, winner of the 15-18 Flut Competition. Donnchadh was also placed 3rd in the 15-18 Flute Slow Air Competition.

Apart from the competitions, branch members were involved in many other aspects of the very successful Fleadh.

A group of 36 branch members performed on the Gig Rig treating the huge crowd to 40 minutes of music song and dance. Many young members were part of the Nós Nua Louth Youth Folk Orchestra which performed at the Fleadh Farewell Orchestra. They also played on the Gig Rig and on Fleadh TV.

Several members were part of the Oriel Seisiún Group which performed for President Michael D Higgins at the official opening of the Fleadh. Other branch members were involved in performing at concerts, tutoring at Scoil Éigse, adjudicating at competitions, stewarding at venues, playing on the live Céilí House programme and playing at informal Fleadh Sessions.

Branch PRO Padraig Donlon expressed great satisfaction with the

success of the competitors at the Fleadh.

“Featuring in the top three at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is a great achievement and to win an All Ireland title is simply wonderful. To win it at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in your own county is extra special and is something that these young people will remember for the rest of their lives.

“The Dundalk branch which is one of the oldest in the organisation has represented Louth very well over the years.

We constantly work at maintaining the standards set by the founders of our branch,” he stated.

Class Enrolment for the 2019/2020 season will be held on Monday night September 9 at 7pm in the Oriel Centre Dundalk Gaol.

“This is where children will have their first experience of traditional music. Hopefully, with expert guidance from their teachers and their own efforts they will go on to enjoy playing music to a high standard for decades to come,” added Padraig.

Anthony Tuite took full advantage of the excellent conditions on Sunday to shot one of

Caolan Rafferty the best rounds of the year and win the Members Prize at the Past Captains event.

The 14 handicapper shot a gross score of 78 for 44pts but even then he needed his score over the final three holes to see off Gerry Brennan (5) on countback.

As well as finishing second overall, Brennan had the consolation of recording the day’s best gross score of 39pts while Peter Rogers, who was the club’s Centenary Captain in 2005, won the Past Captains

and Presidents Prize, with an excellent 40pts off a two handicap.

Damien Garland (8), Dermot McKenna (15) and Michael Byrne (21) were the category winners while Cillian Halpenny (19) won the Juvenile Prize.

Teenager Joseph Laverty (5) finished the school holidays on a high by winning Wednesday’s Open Singles with a score of 39pts while Eoin Murphy (+1) recorded the best gross with a score of 38pts.

Neal MacKell finished tied 11th at the Connacht Mid-Amateur Championship which was played at Roscommon Golf Club. He shot rounds of 75 and 76 to finish nine shots behind winner Eddie McCormack from Galway.

The Annual Club Classic will be held on Friday, September 13, and the time sheet is now available at the Bar. Entry is €120 per team and must be paid in full when booking a tee time.

Declan Nerney set to headline this year’s Knockbridge Vintage Rally Dundalk Leader 28th August 2019

SOSAD and the Redemptorist Church will combine to host the SOSAD Mass on Sunday September 1 at 7pm for all those who have lost their lives to suicide.

The Mass is a very special occasion for all those that attend and will be celebrated by Fr Derek Ryan. The music is a huge part of the Mass and will be performed by the Redemptorist Choir.

Taking part in the Mass will be representatives from SOSAD, community groups, support services and first responders together with representatives from Louth Co Council’s porting groups and education.

The Mass will honour and remember loved ones by lighting candles in their memory and placing pictures of them on the altar if so wished.

All sevices and community groups are invited to take part in the Mass and they can contact the SOSAD office.

The Annual Knockbridge Vintage Rally and Working Day takes place on Sunday September 8 in Knockbridge with gates opening to the public at 1pm.

There will be a large collection of vintage tractors, cars and bicycles as well as vintage threshing and a working area which will include binders, reapers and vintage combines to name but a few for all the machinery enthusiasts. Dundalk Credit Union Host Successful Department of Finance Event For North East Credit Unions Department of Finance representatives travelled to the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dundalk last Tuesday evening to speak to representatives from more than twenty Credit Unions drawn from across the North East. The Department’s presentation covered areas such as Credit Union Strategy and Positioning, a legislative up-date together with information on the on-going work of the Credit Union Advisory Committee, a Statutory Committee which operates under the auspices of the Department of Finance.

Brian Corr, Head of Credit Union Policy, Department of Finance, presented to a packed room, which was followed by a very engaging Q&A session. The evening was hosted by Dundalk Credit Union.

Boil Water Notice remains in place during works on the Tallanstown water supply

The Boil Water Notice (BWN) currently in place for the Tallanstown Public Water Supply (PWS) since 30 July, 2019 remains in place until further notice as Irish Water continues vital work to improve and safeguard the supply. The Boil Water Notice affects approximately 2,000 people served by the Tallanstown Public Water Supply.

The areas affected include; Tallanstown; Louth Village; Knockbridge; Carnalogue; Mills of Louth; Knockdillon and surrounding areas.

Irish Water’s drinking water and operational experts, in partnership with Louth County Council, are continuing to work closely with the Health Service Executive and the Environmental Protection Agency to lift this BWN as quickly and as safely

as possible.

The BWN was put in place as a precautionary measure following issues with the treatment process which impacted on the disinfection process at the Water Treatment Plant. This led to inadequate chlorination of the public water supply.

Irish Water, in partnership with Louth County Council, have carried out tank cleaning and reservoir cleaning at the plant. The performance of the water treatment plant and water quality monitoring is continuing to ensure consistent water treatment. Flushing of the watermains in the area is ongoing, this is an essential piece of work to maintain the network and is carried out on watermains across the country.

Irish Water has also con-

tacted all registered vulnerable customers affected by this Boil Water Notice and apologised for the inconvenience.

“Irish Water acknowledges the impact and inconvenience caused by this BWN to homes and businesses in the Tallanstown area. We wish to thank the community for their ongoing patience and cooperation while we work to resolve this issue.

Irish Water’s priority is the provision of safe, clean drinking water and safeguarding that water supply for the future is a vital focus,” they said in a statement.

Support for healthcare workers Sinn Féin councillor Ruairí Ó Murchú has successfully brought a motion to Louth County Council regarding the ongoing industrial dispute between healthcare support workers and the government.

Councillor Ó Murchú said he brought a motion to Louth County Council to demonstrate solidarity with the healthcare support workers.

“This motion was supported by all of the councillors present

and it called on the Government to honour commitments made to these workers.

“I joined the staff on the picket line at Louth County Hospital in June. The staff I met were healthcare assistants, technicians, porters, cooking and cleaning staff, absolutely essential to the workings of any healthcare facility.

“They did not want to be out on strike, they told me that they hated disrupting the already

difficult job of the medical staff, they hated the inconvenience to patients and they really just wanted to get on with their jobs.

“However these people, mostly women, were united in their sense of injustice at the way they had been treated and they felt they had absolutely no option but to send a strong message to the Government by withdrawing their labour,” he stated.

Back to School will be the theme as Dundalk children enjoy the latest kids club at Marshes Shopping Centre on Saturday, August 31.

There will be lots happening to keep children entertained at Marshes Little Monsters kids club from Noon to 4pm.

The free kids club

runs on the last Saturday of each month at the food court, so you can bring your children for an afternoon full of exciting activities.

There will be great activity this Saturday as Dundalk children take part in a back to school arts and crafts workshop, including making pencil pots,

name badges, bookmarks and pencil door hangers.

“This event is a great opportunity for kids to have a super time,” said centre manager Seán Farrell.

“We are looking forward to welcoming children and parents and to hosting more events in 2019.”

in Brief Birds And Extinction

On Tuesday September 3 at 8pm upstairs in the Spirit Store Dundalk Docks, Breffni Martin will give an illustrated talk entitled Birds in an Age of Extinction.

About 14% of birds have gone extinct over the last few hundred years, about 22% of mammals and a staggering 33% of amphibians.

This is between 100 and 10,000 times the background rate of extinction and tells us that we are currently living in an age of extinction. How great it will turn out to be depends on many factors.

While birds have performed relatively well compared with other taxons, but up to 30% of what’s left are threatened. For example spotted flycatchers used to be common but have declined 72% in the last 20 years.

The talk will cover how this came about and what is likely to happen over the next few decades.

Breathnach calls for action on illegal dumping Fianna Fáil TD for Louth, Declan Breathnach, has called for action to tackle the scourge of illegal dumping. Deputy Breathnach called for Louth County Council to be given additional resources to help address the problem.

“Illegal dumping and fly tipping has developed into a serious problem in Louth and I believe our proximity to the border is a key reason for this. It’s shameful to see rubbish in parks, lay-bys and on roadsides.

Not only is this a major eyesore, the dumping of toxic materials like tyres and building rubble also sparks

potential public health concerns.

“Over the summer months when people are out and about more there isn’t a week that goes by where I am not contacted by locals reporting new littering and illegal dumping issues. The local Tidy Towns group and other organisations do great work in responding to littering problems, but it cannot be left solely to them to tackle the problem,” he stated.

“I am concerned that not enough resources are being allocated to local authorities - manpower, surveillance and enforcement are all major

The Louth Science Festival, which is being hosted by Louth Library Service has received a boost with the announcement of funding through Science Foundation Ireland.

The local library service is currently programming the Louth Science Festival which will take place across all library branches from November 11 to 23. The inaugural festival took place in 2018, partly funded by SFI. Louth Science Festival will offer a range of opportunities for the public to engage in Science Week. The festival will feature family open days, school events and public talks across the county.

Minister for Business, Enterprise, and Innovation Heather Humphreys TD, and Minister for Training,

Skills, Innovation, Research and Development, John Halligan TD, announced last week an investment of €476,000 through Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), to support 13 festivals and 13 events across the country as part of national Science Week.

The festival takes place in November this year, with a theme of climate action - seeking to help people understand it, how science and technology can help us create a positive climate future and the impact we as individuals can have on climate change.

Yvonne O’Brien, Louth County Librarian is delighted Louth Libraries were successful in their funding application to Science Foundation Ireland and is looking forward to a

“In July, the Council issued 84 litter fines. 70 of these were in

Drogheda, 8 were in in Dundalk and then 6 in the rest of the County.

These stats are a clear sign that the CCTV Programme in Drogheda has been a huge success.”

“Illegal dumping takes up a lot of Council time and resources. Hitting litterers and dumpers with a fine is often the only way to stop them. I’m glad Louth County Council have said A CCTV programme under the 2019 Anti-Dumping initiative will be rolled out in other areas across Louth. I’m sure this will lead to more fines and as a result, less litter in our towns and villages.”

SFI, the national foundation for investment in research in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), coordinates Science Week annually through its SFI Discover Programme and provides funding for projects and events to improve public understanding of science and technology. Businesses, communities and institutions are invited to take part in Science Week.

Blackrock Film Festival

Grease will feature at the Blackrock Film Festival which takes place this weekend

Blackrock is gearing up for the annual film festival which takes place this weekend, from Thursday August 29 to Sunday September 1.

The opening night on Thursday takes place the atmospheric 100 year old AOH hall on the edge of the village when we’ll be swept back in time with the 1923 classic “The Hunchback of Notre Dame“ with the original film score being accompanied live Mark Murphy and Cliodhna Quinlan.

On Friday this year’s free spectacular free open air beach movie is another family favourite, the smash hit 70s movie “Grease” with popular numbers by Olivia Newton John and John Travolta.

Cavan-made movie “The Man Who Wanted To Fly” will be shown in the AOH on Saturday night and introduced by the man himself, Bobbie Coote.

On Sunday evening, the romantic comic fantasy film, “Ame-

lie” will be shown in the retro café/bistro Rocksalt followed by an 80s Blockbuster “Back to the Future” in the Neptune Bar to close out the festival.

DkIT President delivers welcome address

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) President, Michael Mulvey, delivered the welcome address at the eighth Annual Thomas D’Arcy McGee Summer School which took place in Carlingford Heritage Centre on August 20 and 21.

Speaking to a packed room of attendees comprising local regional representatives, regional industry, cultural specialists and the general public, he opened the proceedings by welcoming all to the event which in its brief history has proven to be an unrivalled platform that celebrates political and cultural reflection for people across the island of Ireland and beyond.

“This year’s pro-

gramme is framed against the backdrop and context of Brexit – a formidable political, economic and historic challenge. Thomas D’Arcy McGee was a son of this town, a man who was familiar with challenge and change in his own time and in his own beliefs. It was in Canada that he made his mark as did so many of his fellow countrymen who have emigrated from this part of Ireland to seek a new life in Canada and work side by side in harmony with other immigrants from Ireland. Canada welcomed the Irish of all orientation and backgrounds,” he stated.

In his discussions around Brexit, Mr Mulvey spoke about how the

“At DkIT our response to Brexit is to influence the things that are under our control by working with industry through upskilling and research and engagement. As with many big societal challenges, the only effective response is a highly skilled highly educated population that provides enterprises in the region with that constant injection of new ideas, innovation and energy,” continued Mr Mulvey who also spoke about how DkIT is actively involved in the planning and organisation of the Summer School; “It’s about ideas, energy and in particular the insights that are provid-
