Local athlete Kate O’Connor produced a sensational performance in Italy on Sunday claiming second place while also breaking the national heptathlon record. The twenty-year old St Gerards AC heptathlete was competing at the Multistars World Athletics Combined Events Challenge in Lana, Italy and her second place finish was all the more impressive given the fact it was her first heptathlon competition in almost two years.

The competition was made up of 14 athletes with a PB over the 6000 points barrier and included top young talents such as eventual winner Maria Vicente from Spain, Great Britain’s Holly Mills and Australian Sarah Lagger.

The European U20 silver medallist finished with an excellent points total of 6,297 points which was 203 more than her previous best.

Golf resumes at Dundalk Golf Club after 115 days of inactivity After 115 days of inactivity, members of Dundalk Golf Club returned to the fairways on Monday when golf was allowed to resume following further easing of COVID-19 restrictions.

Over 300 golfers took the opportunity to hit their first shots of 2021 as the club has been closed since December 31 when the Government moved the country into a Level 5 Lockdown as the number of COVID-19 cases increased dramatically.

“We are delighted to be back playing and all our members are looking forward to getting out and playing over the next few weeks,” said Club Captain Trevor Giff.

and staff is very much to the forefront.

For Week One groups can only contain players from no more than two house-

holds and Dundalk have limited rounds to nine holes to try and get as many players as possible back on the course.

“We’ve asked members to limit themselves to three rounds this week to give as many people as possible an opportunity to play. We are operating two-ball groups from 8am to 3pm and using a two tee start. We are then giving family groups an opportunity to play in three or four balls from 3pm. By doing this we will be able to accommodate up to 450 golfers every day,” said Lady Captain Pauline Campbell.

Because of the impact COVID-19 had on last year’s golf season, the members of Dundalk Golf Club

agreed last December that the Captain and Lady Captain, as well as the President and Lady President, should remain in office for 2021 and both Captains are hoping that things will be better this year.

“Last year the inter-club season was severely curtailed and the restrictions on indoor gatherings meant a lot of club events were postponed so we are keeping our fingers crossed that things will work out better this year,” said Captain Trevor Giff.

Dundalk’s members, who are the owners of the club, have shown tremendous loyalty during the lockdown according to Head of Operations, John O’Sullivan.

“The members are very

aware that, as the owners of the club, they have a vested interest in its viability. They continued to pay their membership subscriptions for 2021 even though there was no indication of when golf would return. That meant we were able to continue maintaining the course to the high standards demanded by members so that when they did return this week it was in pristine condition,” said O’Sullivan.

That incredible support has been recognised with the Club’s Executive Committee recently approving rewards for members as a token of their appreciation.

“The support from members has been really strong and that’s why Dundalk Golf Club is considered to

be one of the best examples of a members-owned club in Ireland,” says O’Sullivan who previously worked at Waterville, Druids Glen, St Margaret’s, Druids Heath and Delgany Golf Clubs.

With over 1,200 male, female and juvenile members, Dundalk Golf Club is also one of the biggest members’ sports club in the region and they have seen a growth in membership since the pandemic began.

“Golf is one of the safest sports you can play at the moment and still retain social interaction which is extremely important,” said John O’Sullivan. “We were delighted to welcome so many new members and we are still getting enquiries from people of all ages.”

Olympics a step closer for Kate

Continued From Page 1 She ended up just seven points behind the current European U20 champion Maria Vicente of Spain and to put her performance in context her points tally last weekend would have placed her 6th, 4th, 12th, 14th & 14th at the last 5 Olympics.

The 20-year-old began the competition by recording a PB of 13.94 in the 100m hurdles, and followed that up with a 1.80m high jump, 14.23m shot put, 24.94-second 200m, 5.84m long jump, 51.61m javelin throw and a lifetime best of 2:11.76 in the 800m. Kate is edging ever closer to the qualifying standard for this summer’s Olympic Games which is 6420 but given the fact that the top 24 in the world will qualify automatically it means that the former St

Vincent’s student is currently on course for Tokyo as she has now risen to 17th in the world. The cut off date for that qualification metric is the 29th of June.

Speaking on Monday to the Dundalk Leader a tired but ecstatic Kate reflected on what she described as a dream weekend.

“I am so thrilled with my performance as I went there not really knowing what form I was in. I hadn’t competed in a heptathlon competition for 22 months so I wanted to see where I was at really. Thankfully everything really clicked and I was really happy with a lot of my performances over the two days. It was a bit frustrating getting so close to Maria in the end but that just shows me that I can compete against some of the best in the world. Maria is a Euro-

pean U20 champion and a fantastic athlete so I’m definitely doing ok to be pushing her so close.

“The Olympics would be an absolute dream for me to be honest. Six months ago they seemed a long way away as I was just coming back from injury and not at my best but I’ve had this competition on my mind for a couple of months now and this has given me a big confidence boost. The plan for me now is to get home and eat what I want for a couple of days,” laughs Kate.

“I’m going to take this all in and then I will leave it to my Dad to plot what’s next.

The national championships are coming up and I want to enter a couple of more competitions over the next couple of months and hopefully secure my place on the plane to Tokyo,” concluded Kate. Kate O’Connor.

Released without charge

Gardaí have released without charge the man that was arrested on Monday morning 19th April, 2021 in relation to the capital murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe that occurred on 25th January, 2013.

The man (in his 30s) was released without charge on Sunday evening and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

A concerned local resident has asked for Louth County Council to put up a sign in Ice House Hill Park to warn parents of the dangers of a stumpery which was installed four years ago to attract wildlife. A stumpery is a feature quite similar to a rockery but made from parts of a dead tree instead.

Cathy Scott is the sister of GlenDimplex founder Martin Naughton who funded the restoration of the park which had been lying derelict for years before re-opening in 1995. Cathy who is a regular visitor to the park has highlighted a number of issues which she would like Louth County Council to look at including putting up a sign warning parents not to let their children climb the stumpery.

“I am in the park almost every day and I see kids climbing the stumpery which fills me with dread as for me it is not safe for them. There is a rats nest inside the stumpery and there is also the danger that it could topple over if too many kids were climbing on it. There is also a danger of glass bottles or needles being hidden from view and I would urge Louth County Council to put some sort of sign warning parents of the dangers of letting their kids

“I would also like to know why those who are maintaining the bark have dumped the wood chippings on top of the flowers near the rear entrance to the park. Earlier this year they were poured on top of snowdrops and crocuses and currently they are mountains of bark close to the daffodils.

Obviously when kids see a mountain of bark the first thing they want to do is climb it and in doing so they are trampling all over the beautiful daffodils. I would like to know why these wood chippings cannot be put in other areas of the park away from the daffodils.

“There is also a shortage of bins in the park and I definitely think that another bin

or two would help with regards to littering in the park,” stated Cathy.

In response to these queries the operations section of Louth County Council sent the Dundalk Leader the following statement.

“Ice House Hill Park is one of our flagship parks in Co. Louth. Louth County Council endeavors to manage our public parks to a high standard and in sustainable ways. Louth County Council has regularly been an annual recipient of the ‘Park Green Flag Awards’, which is an international accreditation, awarded by a panel of parks experts.

“The structure you are referring to is a stumpery which has been in the park

for the last four years. We have not received any complaints or issues in relation to an alleged presence of rodents. We will investigate and if there is any issue we will rectify it.

“This stumpery is not a play unit, it is there to attract wildlife and enhance biodiversity in the area. Ice House Hill Park is an unsupervised park and we would strongly encourage parental responsibility of children.

“Recycling of wood chippings is very important because it means that the natural resource is actually being used for something worthwhile rather than just being disposed into landfill or burned. Wood chipping was placed around the park in order to be used to mulch trees. There is a clear difference between dumping of items and recycling of materials. Taking this option has a much better outcome for the environment as a whole and helps us to reduce our carbon footprint.

“The wood chips did not affect any snowdrops or crocuses. While there was a small amount of daffodils affected this is only a temporary impact, as these bulbs will completely grow back as normal in the coming year.

“The wood chip was placed

in this location in December when the daffodil bulbs were dormant and it was not possible to determine where they were. We were limited in when we could place the chippings due to Covid-19 restrictions.

“We encourage all residents including children to get out and about and explore nature. It is very nice to see children doing this and using their own initiative to experience nature. Any minor damage that may have been caused to the daffodils is completely reversible and does not have any long term impact on these plants.

“Louth County Council always seeks to improve our public parks for local communities and visitors to use and enjoy. Some of the improvements that are scheduled to take place in the coming months include planting of wildflowers, creation of tree trails and an orienteering trail.

“There are no plans to install additional litter bins in this location. We would encourage members of the public to leave no trace. Any waste generated while using facilities should be gathered and brought back home by park users, it’s a lot lighter on the way out,” concluded the statement.

Dundalk Chamber fear consequences of minimum unit alcohol Dundalk chamber have outlined concerns regarding the proposed introduction of the minimum unit alcohol pricing given the fact it won’t be done on an all island basis. According to the chamber the new law will encourage smuggling as well as encouraging Dundalk shoppers to go up north to buy alcohol.

“Dundalk Chamber has learnt of the proposed introduction of the minimum unit alcohol pricing under Section 11 of the Public Health Alcohol Act. We have always stated that we welcome such a move provided it is carried out on an all island basis.

This was the approach adopted on another health initiative, the sugar tax.

On this occasion we understand that the proposal is NOT to coordinate the approach. We fear that there will be a number of Very unwelcome outcomes.

1.—This will encourage off license purchases in the North to the detriment of local shops.

2.—The creation of an unreg-

ulated market, i.e. smuggling, with no controls on sales ensuring minors will have unregulated access to alcohol 3.—The displacement of retail activity. People who travel north to legally buy alcohol are going to carry out other retail activity when there to the loss of all retailers in Dundalk.

“All parties in the Oireachtas have argued against Brexit, pointing out the All Island economy and the practical difficulties of patrolling the movement of goods across the border. Nothing has changed on that issue. The Border is as porous now as it has been for the last 100 years.

We as employers and as concerned citizens will help in any way we can to address all alcohol related matters. We do not believe that this isolated measure is a step in the right direction. The Northern Ireland Health Minister Robin Swann said that such legislation will not be enacted in the North before May 2022 that is just over a year away.

Also in the short term as hospitality re-opens in the North ahead of in the south this measure will further undermine the recovery of the hospitality sector in the south,” concluded the statement from Dundalk Chamber.

DkIT outline vision to join a Multi-Campus RTU by 2023 DkIT have outlined their vision statement which will see the college become part of a campus of a multicampus Regional Technological University by 2023.

The statement was shared with all staff at a consultative briefing on Friday and has been ratified by the DkIT Governing Body.

However, the news was not welcomed by everybody at the college

with the DkIT branch of the TUI stating that the publication was an attempt to misrepresent a serious strategic blunder as some form of breakthrough.

Speaking on Friday, DkIT President, Michael Mulvey, PhD, said, “As an institute we have a clear vision to become part of a Technological University within the lifetime of the Strategic

Plan 2020-2022. Over recent years, we have consistently espoused the belief that our region would gain significantly from being a TU campus from an economic, social and cultural perspective.

Our vision statement released today helps articulate what a campus of a multi-campus regional TU will look like for DKIT and it outlines some of the key shared values and

Responding to the publication by DkIT management of the vision statement document the Dundalk IT Branch of the Teachers Union of Ireland expressed frustration at the failure of DkIT to join a TU Consortia.

TUI Branch Chair Dr Kevin Howard stated “Sadly today’s announcement by the Institute confirms that DkIT has missed the opportunity to enter the Technological University process as an equal partner with the country’s other Insti-

tutes of Technology.

“The TUI has consistently raised this concern on behalf of staff for years, that the Institute was missing a closing window of opportunity due to Institute President Michael Mulvey’s refusal to enter talks with other potential partners to join a TU Consortium.

“The Institute’s admission that they can now only seek TU Status via Section 38 of the Technological Universities Act 2018 means that, rather than negotiating from a position of strength and winning for Dundalk a central position in the design of a new Technological University, DkIT will now have to go cap in hand beg-

ging for admission to an established Technological University which has already designed and established its structures, aims and strategic goals without any input from DkIT or its stakeholders. The decision whether or not to allow DkIT admission to such a Technological University will rest with the new University rather than DkIT. Consequently, as the TUI has warned for years, DkIT has lost control of its own future status due to years of strategic mismanagement,” pointed out Dr Howard.

“Consequently the celebratory tone of the Institute’s publication will ring very hollow in the corridors of

DkIT as it will be seen by staff as a transparent attempt to misrepresent a serious strategic blunder as some form of breakthrough.

“However, in spite of the difficult situation the Institute finds itself in, the TUI welcomes the intervention of the Higher Education Authority to assist DkIT to extricate itself from the serious strategic errors that have been made under the current President.

Despite being late to the TU game the TUI remains optimistic that DkIT will be seen as a desirable addition to an established Technological University given the excellence of the educational service that the Institute continues to provide to the region,” concluded Kevin.

Anyone for tennis?

TENNIS courts in Dundalk have re-opened as the further easing of Covid-19 Level 5 restrictions came into effect on Monday, April 26th.

Dundalk Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club Manager Annemarie Eaton said she is “thrilled” to get something up and running.

“There’s only singles at the minute but the juniors and seniors are all back with some added regulations,” she said.

There were three coaches back on the courts on Monday.

There are 350 junior and senior tennis members, not including badminton and squash.

Overall, the club has 500 members and there is a new online booking system in place for those keen to get back on a court.

“We are hopefully going to have summer camps if everyone stays safe and keeps the numbers down,” said Annemarie.

“We had successful summer camps last year and we have additional regulations in place to keep everyone safe.”

Sports pitches and golf courses are also set to reopen and visitor attractions including zoos, pet farms and heritage sites will be

Brittany shows her resilience in new book A WOMAN living in Castlebellingham has published her debut book, an autobiography called ‘Resilience’.

Originally from New Jersey, Brittany McEnteggart lives with her wife, Aine, from the Red Barn’s Road.

“I’ve always had a passion for writing.

As a child, my mother had to buy me lots and lots of notebooks,” she said.

“I always knew I wanted to write my life story from a young age but it wasn’t until 2020 when I was working in the Carnbeg Hotel that I finally started my autobiography.

“The hotel closed because of lockdown so I said to myself it was time to do this. I had a box that contained papers and memories so I had that to work with.”

Brittany added: “Then I found myself an editor and a selfpublishing agency and

“I decided I wanted to publish it on my 30th birthday which is the 7th June 2021.

I decided to share my story with the world to make a difference by allowing others to learn or understand my own

personal experiences. “ Brittany was in foster care at age seven, due to having an alcoholic parent, and an absentee father.

“It shares my struggles with being sexually assaulted, right through to two abusive relationships as a teenager and losing my father to suicide,” she said.

“Not all is bad though, although my story has heartbreak it shares my happy ending also. I met my partner, who is now my wife and moved to Ireland from the USA. “I want to share my story with the world to give someone else hope, the hope and guidance I needed in my darkest times.”

DUNDALK RFC Senior Squad are set to line out to run 5km a day over the May Bank holiday weekend to honour the memory of their late team-mate.

The event has been organised in the lead up to the first anniversary of the passing of their team-mate, the late Caolan (Meego) Meegan from Forkhill Road, Kilcurry.

The aim of the event is to honour his memory and to create awareness of epilepsy in young athletes.

Dundalk RFC will raise much needed funds for Epilepsy Ireland in Caolan’s

Caolan Meegan in action for Dundalk Rugby Club memory while honouring his legacy and standing shoulder to shoulder with his family and friends on his first anniversary in a

A Thought for Hillwalkers?

“ONE FROM THE HILLS !”

Dear Editor, We are all exhilarated by the buzz we get from a hike in the hills. Be it a stunning view or our companions company or achieving a summit or distance challenge we derive great enjoyment and satisfaction from our interaction with the beauty of our stunning mountains.

However, occasionally when encountering litter on our hikes, we experience the opposite promoting anger and bewilderment within us at such outrageous behavior by our fellow humans . There`s no doubt about it: BEAUTY DIES WHERE LITTER LIES! Experienced hikers know and practice to leave nothing but foot prints behind.

Unfortunately some others are the complete opposite in this practice. For all problems there are many and varied solutions but might I suggest there`s one simple solution to reduce this horrendous litter problem on our hills . Can we promote the philosophy and practice that when we are on the hills

we bring back home just ONE item of litter for recycling? This POWER OF ONE will work to reduce and eliminate this national travesty.

Consider the possible mathematics and numbers involved ! I go out hillwalking perhaps 40 plus times a year so I bring home approximately 40 plus pieces of litter for recycling.

Now multiply this by tens of thousands and it becomes tons and tons. NOTE: Good example of removing one recyclable item while trekking will also highlight the problem to others with or near us at the time as well as assisting in the solution.

With support and publicity the most likely outcome from this campaign will be little or no litter on our awesome hills and mountains. Important to note this potentially only works if one confines ones effort to just ONE item. WHY SO? Increasing the number will spoil the hikes and ultimately lead to disillusionment and abandonment of the practice.

So stick to ONE. It is simple

and will work. Try it. During national spring clean week is the time for a club or individuals to perhaps organize a cleanup on a bigger stage where there`s a more serious problem. So go on and adopt this simple practice and promote it and we will have the cleanest as well as the most beautiful hills in the world.

So simple to remove one can or piece of plastic or a glass bottle etc .We have shown the world how to do it with plastic shopping bags and we can do the same simply with our beloved hills . It’s a winner so let`s do it.

We have Tidy Towns so why not Tidy Mountains! What a novel and simple way to contribute towards putting a bad year behind us and a wonderful and enchanting environment henceforth before us.
