IT hasn’t been the best of seasons on the field of play for Louth GAA but there is some good news on the horizon with the prospect of a new and fitfor-purpose County Ground moving a step closer.

The ongoing debacle concerning the current County Ground in Drogheda is at an end after Croke Park told Louth County Board that they will not be funding the redevelopment of the venue.

This is the result of issues over ownership and lease of the ground which have not been resolved despite years of talks and investigations, involving Louth County Board, Louth County Council and the O Raghallaighs club.

Successive County Board regimes have been unable to find a resolution to the impasse but the decision has now been made by Croke Park and as a result Louth fans can now look forward to getting a new home.

Cowardly attack on vital service

Andrea Connolly from Cuidigh Linn has vowed not to let last weeks disgraceful attack on the groups building in Muirhevnamór stop them from doing their work in the community.

Last Tuesday evening at around 10.20pm there was an arson attack on Cuidigh Linn’s building at 1 Park 1, Muirhevnamor, in Dundalk. Two fire brigade engines were called to the scene and although a section of the roof was badly damaged there nobody was hurt in the attack.

Garrett Weldon decides not to stand for election Dundalk Leader 28th March 2018

Dundalk man Garret Weldon has decided not to put his name forward as a candidate for the next general election.

The People Before Profit party member stated that he is unable to stand as a candidate for Louth/East Meath due

to work commitments.

Garret had previously announced he would be running as a candidate for what would have been his second election campaign but in a statement released on Sunday evening he revealed he had changed his mind.

“After a lot of consideration I have decided to stand down as the People Before profit alliance candidate for Louth/East Meath due to other commitments that I have to prioritise. People will ask is this the end of my involvement in politics and the honest answer is none of us know what the future holds but for now I will no longer be politically active.

Since 2008 I have been involved as an activist in the anti-austerity campaigns before I moved into politics, but

in the last year it has become increasingly harder to juggle politics along with fulltime employment.

“A lot of time has been taken up working on casework with most evening’s lunchtimes and weekends spent working on behalf of people in the community, sometimes with great success and other times it can be very frustrating, when working on issues that can not be so easily resolved. In reality someone needs to be employed fulltime to get

through the volume of work that has come in.

“I also have to thank my wife Ciara along with my children for their great support and allowing me the time to contest the last election and continue working on peoples behalf. I also have to thank my mother Kit and my two brothers Paudie and Niall for their encouragement support and advice over the years.

“To everyone that supported and voted for me in the last general election I thank you, it

was an honour for me that so many people had the trust and confidence to give me something so important as their vote.

Keep yourselves well and look after one another, Slán .... Garrett,” concluded the statement.

Weldon had performed with great credit at the last general election with an impressive debut campaign that saw him pick up 3,462 first preference votes before being eliminated at the sixth count with a total Garrett will not contest the next general election. of 4,586.

A man who pleaded guilty to driving without insurance was banned from the road for two years at Dundalk District Court.

John Marshall of 37 Maple Close, Avenue Road, Dundalk, admitted the offence after being stopped by Gardai on October 12, 2016. Solicitor, Eleanor Kelly stated that he was a member of the Travelling Community and had been homeless at the time. He was currently studying for his Leaving Certificate and on a back to education course.

Judge John Coughlan also imposed a €100 fine.

Louth GAA look forward to new home PART TIME AND FULL

From Page 1 While the County Board will not be in a position to comment on the matter until it has been discussed at a meeting tonight (Wednesday), a source confirmed that the Gaelic Grounds will not be developed and that a new option is being sought.

The Drogheda venue has come in for some severe criticism in recent times with the facilities not considered up to the standard of modern inter-county games.

However, while other counties in Ireland have moved ahead in terms of upgrade, Louth have been restricted due to the issues over ownership.

The poor facilities have meant that Louth have been unable to stage any high-profile Championship games at home and in recent years have been forced to travel to Navan and Parnell Park on occasions.

It appeared that the issue had been resolved when a deal was agreed with DkIT to establish the County Grounds in a modern facility at the local college but that fell through.

Some supporters have already expressed the hope that the line with DkIT can be resurrected and while there is land at the facility it is unclear if the college would now be in a position to consider such a project.

Another option on the table in the past was to develop the County Ground at the Centre of Excellence in Darver but issues over infrastructure made DkIT a more viable option at the time.

Woman threw pup at door during row A woman who threw a twomonth old pup at a door during a domestic argument was given the chance to avoid a custodial when she was directed to engage with the Probation Services.

Caroline McDonagh (40) of 54 Grange Drive, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, pleaded

guilty to a breach of the peace, intoxication and endangering the health of an animal at her address on February 2 last year.

Judge John Coughlan was told that the puppy had recovered but he stated that he believed a custodial sentence would be appropriate.

However, solicitor Eleanor

Kelly asked that he would not impose a sentence as the defendant was a mother of five who was in difficult circumstances. She felt that Ms McDonagh would benefit from the support of the Probation Services.

Judge Coughlan agreed to adjourn the case to July 11.

Ray makes impressive start to cycling season As the first day on summer finally arrived on March 25, so did the IVCA 2018 racing season.

The IVCA racing has always been a fertile hunting ground for Cuchulainn’s cyclists and has seen a number of its riders claim national age graded titles.

The first round of the season was a 100km road race held in Kilcullen, Co. Kildare.

As the kilometers ticked by the peleton became withered down as the weaker riders dropped off.

Eventually a select bunch came to the line fighting tooth and nail for the win. Castelebellingham man Ray Fedigan was well positioned and followed the wheels,

until finally picking the perfect moment to open up his sprint.

His acceleration took him to the front of the bunch, a position he

held to take the chequered flag.

His club mates Dale Copas and Jimmy Flynn had good races and finished in the same bunch as Ray. Also in action on the same day, David Holland sprinted home to third place in the “Black” race, in what proved to be a great day for the club.

Meanwhile on the open racing front. Liam Dolan on Saturday (March 24th) travelled to Ards for the 142km Tour of Ards and came home in eighth position.

For the Easter Weekend, Liam will be competing in the 3 day, 4 stage Tour of the North, as part of the Clan Eireann Lurgan Team.

Lack of sleep proved no obstacle to in-form Austin Shaw as he surged to victory in Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition which also doubled as Round 2 of the Winter League sponsored by Tiernan’s Centra Blackrock.

In the first 18 hole competition of the year, Shaw (9) had three points to spare over Neal MacKell (3) who had to settle for winning Category One and also recording the best gross score of the day with 37pts.

A passionate Dundalk FC supporter, Shaw travelled to the Showgrounds on Saturday night to watch Stephen

Kenny’s side record a 2-0 victory over Sligo Rovers. He drove home after the match and, despite losing an hour’s sleep when the clocks went forward on Sunday morning, he still made the first tee for his dew-sweeping 08:12 start.

Donal Curran (12) took the Category Two prize and Conor Byrne (23) was the Category Three winner.

The final round of the Winter League will take place on Sunday with three scores from each team to count. Team 3, captained by Bill McCarthy, continue to lead the way but only by one point from Colm Coburn’s Team 2. Just 10

points separate the top nine teams so there is all to play for next Sunday. The League table is on the club website.

Congratulations to Caolan Rafferty on winning the Laytown & Bettystown Scratch Cup on Sunday for the second time.

There are two competitions scheduled for Easter Monday, April 2. The morning competition is a semi open singles stableford and the afternoon competition is a semi open Mixed Scotch Foursomes.

On Monday April 2 upstairs in the Spirit Store Dundalk Docks, Breffni Martin will give an illustrated talk entitled A Turn for the Terns. The talk will cover the five common tern species that breed in Ireland as well as some of the rarer ones that sometimes turn up on our shores, as well as identification, ecology and conservation. The Old Dundalk Society is delighted to announce its first lecture in their 2018 spring season of lectures.

The lecture entitled, 1919The Transformation of Dundalk, will examine how the ending of the First World War and the beginning of the War of Independence transformed Dundalk.

The lecture will be delivered by well-known local historian, Dr. Donal Hall, who has written and lectured widely on the revolutionary period in County Louth. The lecture takes place in the County Museum, Jocelyn Street, Dundalk, on Wednesday April 4, commencing at 8pm. Patrons are advised to come early, as there is limited capacity available at the lecture venue.

Traders send in submission to Louth County Council

Traders in Bridge St. and Linenhall St. have submitted their concerns to Louth County Council regarding the proposed rejuvenation of the St. Nicholas Quarter - an area comprising Clanbrassil.

St, Church St. Linenhall St. and Bridge St. At the beginning of 2016 it was announced that Dundalk had received €2m which would go towards a regeneration project to rejuvenate an area stretching from ‘Market Square to the big bridge’. The total cost of the project was projected to be in the region of €4m the council matching the EU’s contribution of €2m.

Speaking last month Sean’s Tavern and Camelot bar owner Michael Finnegan speaking on behalf of the Bridge St. and Church St. traders stated that the group had a number of issues with the proposed works “We have a number of concerns which we will submit into the Town Hall before the deadline at the end of the month.

I hope that the council officials will take our concerns on board. There are a number of long established businesses on Church St. who have serious concerns about these plans having a negative impact on their livelihoods. We will continue to state these concerns and we just have to hope that common sense prevails and they can at least meet us half way on these issues,” stated Michael.

The group’s letter to LCC outlines the issues they have with the proposed scheme.

“Dear Sir, I wish to comment upon the above Part 8 Proposal, as follows: I welcome the initiative to upgrade Bridge, Church, Clanbrassil and Linenhall Streets, and endorse the Council’s wish to improve our street environment. My comments are as follows: “1. The removal of parking in Church St represents a potential threat to the traders and residents of the area.

“2. The proposed routing of traffic down

Fairgreen Road towards St Helena Park and St Mary’s Road demonstrates the potential for severe congestion in that area, as well as curtailing important commercial traffic into town. I also question the wisdom of routing traffic to Yorke St as it is already congested and badly planned.

The re-routing of traffic away from the gateway entrance to Dundalk (Linenhall St) is a poorly thought out idea, which has clearly not been fully thought through. It also appears that key constituents affected by this idea have not been consulted on the matter. This represents a deficit in the planning process.

“3. I welcome the inclusion of Bridge St and Linenhall St in the plan and seek clarification as to whether or not these streets are to be included in the implementation of works.

“4. I am concerned that reshaping of the junctions of (1) Linenhall St and Church St,(2) Patrick St and Church St and (3)

Laurels and Church St will make these junctions unsafe for heavy goods vehicles, eg buses, emergency vehicles, commercial goods vehicles traffic, and represents substantial danger to all road users – especially pedestrians.

“5. There are 7 schools close to this area of the high street, which creates massive car, bus and pedestrian traffic at key times in the day. This cohort of users of the area will be badly served and their safety put at risk by the plan in its current form. 6. This plan has not been future-proofed for future sustainable development of urban communities.

“In submitting this correspondence, I earnestly ask the Council to adapt the existing proposal to reflect good planning strategy, to the good of the traders, residents and users of the area to the benefit of all,” concluded the submission.

Monday March 12 was the final day for submissions on the proposal.

Prison for man who admitted driving while disqualified A man who admitted driving while disqualified was sentenced to five months in prison at Dundalk District Court.

Adam O’Mara (23) of Limestone Cottage, Clontail, Drumconrath, Co Meath, admitted driving without insurance when he was stopped by Gardai at Marshes Upper, Inner Relief Road, Dundalk, on February 2

this year.

The court heard that he had a previous conviction for no insurance and was coming to the end of a four-year ban. He had begun the process of applying for his licence back when this incident occurred.

The defence solicitor stated that the defendant, who had been born in Australia but was living

in Ireland for 15 years, had been trying to turn his life around.

He was an apprentice welder who couldn’t get a lift on the day in question and made the decision to drive.

Judge John Coughlan imposed a ten year ban and €100 fine along with a five month prison sentence, while fixing recognisances for appeal.

“We provide a range of supports for the elderly and vulnerable around Dundalk and we cannot believe that we would be targeted in this way.

This is an attack on the whole community who we help and I think it’s very disappointing about the whole situation.

“We actually only

moved into the premises nine weeks ago and we had done quite a bit of work in the meantime so it was a shock for us when we heard on Tuesday evening that the building had been set on fire. The roof is very badly damaged but I suppose we were lucky that the whole building didn’t go up in flames. I have no idea why anybody would target an organisation that is here to serve the community but what I do know is these people won’t stop us from doing our job.

“We were open again first thing on Wednesday morning and we will continue to help out the elderly and vulnerable around Dundalk despite this setback. We had so many men and women ringing us worrying that we wouldn’t be able to come out and help them but we refuse to let these vandals stop us,” promised Andrea.

Meanwhile Sinn Fein councillor Ruairi Ó Murchú condemned those who were responsible for the attack.

“Cuidigh Linn is a

group who provide necessary services to elderly people in Dundalk and the surrounding region.

They rent this premises from Louth County Council in order to carry out this valuable service.

This attack was disgraceful but it will not deter Andrea Connolly and her team who carried on today with their vital work for older people.

“This is an attack on the entire community.

Cuidigh Linn employs 10 local people. We could have been reporting a tragedy today or these 10 people could have been out of work.

It is absolutely unacceptable and the community demand action against these criminal gangs operating in the area.

“We are calling on the Gardaí to take action before someone is seriously hurt or worse,” stated Ruairi.

Cllr Ó Murchú also called for the speedy deployment of the promised Drugs and Organised Crime Unit and a strategy to deal with these criminal elements and asked anybody with any information on the attack to contact the gardaí.

Calls for more jobs for people with disabilities

A LOCAL man says that people with disabilities should be given more opportunities after being supported by RehabCare to secure employment.

David Moore, who attends RehabCare services in Dundalk, made the call after securing employment with Radio Systems PetSafe Europe (RSPEL) who have their European headquarters in the town.

Despite applying for a range of jobs and leaving his CV into local shops, David did not receive any replies.

“People like me, who have a mild learning disability, cannot

He completed a Workability programme with RehabCare, a course that supports people to secure employment. The programme covers a range of topics including CV preparation, timekeeping and health and safety.

Stephen Caraher, Supervisor with RehabCare, then approached RSPEL to organise work experience for David.

David initially started with two days per week of work experience, but his positive attitude and commitment means he has now secured paid em-

ployment with the global company.

“This has opened a whole new world to me,” said David.

“I have been given the opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and develop my career. My confidence has grown and I feel part of a team.

When people like me are given an opportunity, we can prove we can be an asset to any company. I can now look to the future with hope in my heart.”

RehabCare’s Stephen Caraher believes this collaboration with RSPEL is a positive example of how supported employment opportunities can

improve the lives of people with disabilities.

He added: “In RehabCare services throughout Dundalk we work with people with disabilities who really want to a job, and have the ability, but they face a number of barriers to employment. This was a completely new experience for David, as he had never worked before. Now, he is working with people from all over Europe. This partnership with RSPEL shows that when the best training and practices are in place, people with disabilities can thrive, achieve and shine.”

GAA legend visits Ardee CS Former Armagh footballer, Oisin McConville, visited Ardee Community School on Wednesday March 14 in order to promote Upbeat week.

Oisín was considered one of the best footballers in Ireland and from 2000 and 2006 he was part of the all-Ireland team in 2002.

He was there to give a very inspirational talk to the students,

with the sportspeople and footballers in the school treated to a motivational talk about playing the game along with tactical strategies.

He talked to them about “Team ethic” and used brainteasers for teambuilding.

Oisín also spoke to the senior students in the school. Not only did he talk about sport but he spoke about his personal story

of addiction that lasted from the age of 14 to 30.

He was addicted to gambling and alerted the students to the warning signs, how to approach a young person in trouble and how to help.

His talk was positive and encouraged well-being.

Oisín’s visit to the school was organised by Bridget Smith, Home School Liaison teacher.

Music Workshops

Music Generation Louth will host ‘Pick Up and Play’ Workshops in Carlingford Thursday April 5.

There are morning (101pm) and afternoon (25pm) sessions planned to cater for different age groups and abilities.

Workshops are open to upper primary school students (4-6th class) and post primary students.

Celebrating cultures at the Grammar School In a colourful, atmospheric and emotional day at Dundalk Grammar School on Thursday March 15, students put on the first ever Celebration of Culture Day at the school.

Born out of an idea that surfaced from a group of 2nd Year students pursuing their CSPE Project on Racism, the idea for such a Day gathered momentum with meetings held after school beginning in September.

With 50 cultures making up the student population, the steering group was tapping in to a latent desire by the students themselves to exhibit and promote these cultures.

Students were encouraged to come in to school in cultural dress, or wear anything that reflected their culture. To see so many students dressed so colourfully and meaningfully gave a real embodiment and meaning to what the day was all about. The message was simple. Acknowledge Diversity, Work on Unity.

Through better understanding of difference in culture, we can recognize how much we have in common and come together.

The day started with a special student assembly, taken by the students themselves. There was singing and dance. A video Vox-

pop of a range of students giving their thoughts on culture. Another video taken in the school in which students spoke in their native languages, Irish students as Gaeilge. The message being, we may speak in different languages, we are all one. Perhaps one student summed up the message of the day, when she read out a beautiful poem that she herself had written. We should embrace each other’s culture through shared understanding. Then there can be no reason for conflict.

Lots of activities took place throughout the day, with teachers entering the spirit with their classes. Stalls were dotted throughout the main school building depicting the various cultures. Live music was put on by the students during lunch time. Music with an international theme played over the PA during break time.

A Soccathon took place in the afternoon involving 1st, 2nd and 3rd Years. Teams were named based on teams participating in the upcoming World Cup. Garrett Mullen, Founder of Show Racism the Red Card in Ireland was present to give his support.

Embassies had been contacted in the run up to the Day. Many sent flags, posters, and other materials to assist with decorating

the various stalls. Two embassies went further, and had representatives attend the series of events on the day. The steering group of students was very pleased to welcome the Deputy Ambassador of the Embassy of Israel, Ms Orli Weissman, and the Embassy’s Information Officer, Ms Sheryl Ann Jackson, and Mr Florian Rehli, First Secretary, German Embassy.

Arguably the highlight of the day was the afternoon Culture Presentation Event. This event gave full voice to the diverse range of talents in young people today.

The packed audience showed its appreciation to the performers who gave it their all, again putting on show the talents of the students from diverse cultures.

The dream and vision for the day was to celebrate culture. The steering group of students could not have dreamt how well the day would actually go. It was beyond expectation, as the wider student body rowed in behind the concept. All those meetings, and stresses along the way, had been worthwhile. Everyone had fun, and all agreed that something tangible had been achieved. Celebration of Culture Day is set to Enjoying the Celebration of Culture Day at Dundalk Grammar School become an annual event.

Dundalk Musical Society are delighted to announce that tickets are selling fast for their upcoming production “Showtime” a limited number are now left.

This cabaret style concert will take place in the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Thursday April 5 at 8pm. The concert will feature a selection of songs from some of the greatest musicals of all time,

A 40 strong adult chorus who have been rehearsing since late January, with featured solos

Clogherhead RNLI Quiz The Clogherhead branch of the RNLI are holding a fundraising quiz in The Clermont, Blackrock on Thursday March 29 at 8:30pm.

All money raised will go towards fundraising for a new "Shannon Class" Lifeboat which is due for

delivery to Clogherhead Lifeboat Station in mid-2019.

The "Shannon" is a very innovative and modern vessel and is very much a craft of the future. It is driven by water jets rather than conventional propellers and the jets are also

used for steering so that there is no rudder required. As a result the vessel has a very low draught and is ideal for operating in shallow areas such as Dundalk Bay. She has a speed in excess of 25knots (46kph) which is a big improvement on existing craft.

Zara competes in Science Olympiad St Vincent’s student Zara Wadding received Highly Commended recently when she took part in the Irish EU Science Olympiad.

The highly competitive event which was held in DCU is an individual, subject based (biology, chemistry or physics) science competition for students who are 16 years of

age or younger on the December 31 prior to the competition.

Zara was selected on the basis of her Junior Certificate Examinations results in Maths & Science and she was one of four representatives from Co.Louth in the national competition.

She was recognised in the physics category where she narrowly missed out a top three medal win.

Fine Gael TD Peter Fitzpatrick said Louth children will benefit from funding to support new and existing play and recreation facilities for children and young people.

The Capital Grant Funding Scheme for Play and Recreation will see the roll out of new and innovative play and recreation projects and the improvement of existing facilities.

Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick is strongly encouraging Louth County Council to apply.

Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick said: “Every child needs access to modern, quality play areas which are inclusive, accessible and safe.

“Play areas must give a sense of adventure. At a time when outdoor activities are often overlooked for hi-tech games, we must ensure our play areas are exciting, innovative and engaging for young minds.

“The total amount of funding available in 2018 is €20,000 per local authority with matched funding from the local authority.

“This funding will provide state of the art play areas for all children in here in Louth, encouraging them play in safe surroundings.

“The deadline for the application is Friday April 13,” explained the Louth Fine Gael TD.

DUNDALK’S Caolan Rafferty produced a strong finish to win the Laytown & Bettystown Scratch Cup for a second time on Sunday.

The 25-year-old birdied his final three holes to capture the 36hole competition by one shot after shooting rounds of 70 and 66.

A shotgun start saw Rafferty teeing off both his rounds on the second hole and he admitted he was surprised to find himself only one shot off the lead after the first round.

Rafferty knuckled down in the second round and produced some excellent golf as he roared around the famous Co Meath links with a five under par 66 that included seven birdies.

Last Tuesday in Portmarnock, Rafferty returned the best gross score in the Winter Alliance when he birdied two of the last three holes for a 69 and on Sunday he once again produced some sparkling golf over the final three holes.

It was his second victory in the competition having won it previously 2013 and he was delighted with the way he played and finished the final round.

“It’s always nice to finish strong and to do it twice in a week is great. Winning the Laytown & Bettystown Scratch Cup in 2013 was a big breakthrough moment for me and it means a lot to have

won it again,” said Rafferty While most of Ireland’s top amateurs are heading to Rosses Point this week for the West of Ireland Championship, Rafferty will heading to St Andrews in Scotland with Maynooth University for the R&A’s Scholars Championship.

“To win in Laytown is a nice boost heading to St Andrews. I played there last year in the St Andrew’s Cup and made the cut so I’m hoping that experience will stand to me this week.”

Noel Toner (45) of 130 Ath Leathan, Racecourse Road, Dundalk, was found with €10 worth of cannabis on May 14 last year.

Solicitor Fran McDonnell stated that the defendant had been dealing with his issue for a long time and had been doing well.

However, he lost his partner at the time of this incident.

Judge John Coughlan stated that he would refer Mr Toner to the Probation Service to see if he was suitable for the drugs court and adjourned the case to May 9.

AA SAYS GOVERNMENT MOMENTUM LOST ON CAR INSURANCE COSTS

Motor Insurance costs are far higher than they should be for consumers because Government attention has wavered and identified reforms have stalled, according to the AA. This was being treated as a crisis by government two years ago but necessary changes are not now being pushed through.

“Sky-high premiums are the new normal.” Says AA Chief Executive Brendan Nevin. “People were shocked by this two or three years ago. The shock has worn off but the price increases have not.”

“In recent months premiums have dropped slightly according

to the Central Statistics Office which has had the negative sideeffect of allowing Government to treat this as yesterday’s problem. The spike in premiums gave government an opportunity to introduce necessary reforms and legislation to create a healthier insurance market, which would have greatly benefitted the consumer, but they have failed to follow up their initial report with serious action. It is a crisis wasted.”

“Two years ago the AA launched its report and began a sustained campaign of lobbying to get these issues tackled.

There followed the Oireachtas Transport Committee Report and Minister Eoghan Murphy’s Working Group Report.” Says Nevin. “We were delighted with them. They reflected our concerns and promised solutions.

Now in 2018, very little has been delivered.

The AA believes that since the working group published its first report the political will to solve the crisis has largely dissipated – with political attention switching elsewhere. “We want to see this work completed with the same energy as when it was started.” Says Nevin. “The meas-

ures we proposed two years ago would not take significant effort or financial capital to implement, but would lead to a healthier insurance industry and greatly

improve the existing situation for the consumer.”

The AA is calling on the government to reassess the initial report from the Cost of Insurance

Working Group and determine what further actions are needed to improve the existing situation, particularly in 5 key areas outlined in its original 5 Point Plan.
