Gardaí have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the murder of Adrian Donohoe who was killed at the Lordship Credit Union on January 25, 2013.

A man in his 20s was arrested on Sunday evening in connection with the murder, while a second man in his 60s was arrested on Monday.

The man in his 20s was arrested in Dublin outside Wheatfield Prison before being brought to Dundalk where he was detained under the provisions of section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007. He had just completed a sentence for traffic offences when he was arrested by Gardaí outside the prison. A statement was released by Gardaí on Sunday evening regarding the breakthrough in the case.

GARDAÍ have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the murder of Adrian Donohoe who was killed at the Lordship Credit Union on January 25, 2013.

A man in his 20s was arrested on Sunday evening in connection with the murder, while a second man in his 60s was arrested on Monday.

Dundalk have arrested a male in his 20’s in connection with the murder.

“He was arrested in Dublin earlier this evening and is currently being detained at Dundalk Garda station under the provisions of section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007.”

Meanwhile a man in his 60s was arrested on Monday night and was detained at Balbriggan Garda station under the provisions of section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007.

were on a cash escort from a number of credit unions on the Cooley Peninsula when an armed gang blocked them in to a car park outside Lordship Credit Union.

When Detective Donohoe got out to investigate, two gunmen ran towards him and one shot him dead.

Earlier this year Chief Superintendent Christy Mangan in Dundalk Garda station spoke on the fifth anniversary of the case appealing for anybody with any information on the

case to come forward.

He revealed that the suspects were known to Gardaí but some had left the country to seek protection in other jurisdictions.

However, he vowed that the Gardaí would follow them “to the ends of the earth” to bring them to justice. Chief Supt Mangan also indicated that the Gardaí had received significant information from members of the public over the previous twelve months which had led to a number of lines of enquiry being explored.

Amongst the four judges on the night was the well-known X-Factor and Ireland’s Got talent judge Louis Walsh.

The show was opened by De La Salle’s ‘Neil Murray and Band’ comprised of Samuel Ogobamidele on drums, Saoirse Murray on Bass Guitar , Mark Kingham on Lead Guitar and vocalist Neil Murray who performed a hip version of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues”.

However, it was Faoi Gheasa preforming Eithne Ní Uallacháin’s version

of “Táim cortha ó bheith im’ aonar im luí” followed by an exhilarating afro-celt version of Drowsy Maggie that grabbed the attention of judge Louis Walsh and the entire audience in the TLT. The group consisted of Donncadh Hughes on Flute and Whistle and Keyboard , Conor Conway on Whistle and Uilleann pipes , Samuel Ogobamidele on Keyboard and Drums, Colm Bellew on Guitar , Enoch Elewa on Conga drums , Oisin Dixon on Banjo and mandolin, Ronan Byrne on Concertina and Iarlaith Carroll as lead vocalist.

He described them ward to hearing more as the new “Chief- from them in the futans” and looked for- ture.

As the town braces itself for heavy snowfall and blizzards over the next couple of days people have been warned to be careful and look out for any elderly people living alone in their area.

Temperatures are set to plummet this evening (Wednesday) ahead of what weather forecasters are describing as the coldest spell in the region since 1982.

Currently Met Eireann have issued a Status Orange Warning for Louth but have stated that this could be upgraded to Red by Thursday depending on the severity of conditions.

According to Louth County Council they are continuing to monitor the situation and have

already activated their Cold Weather Response which is aimed to look after those people who are sleeping rough in the area.

“Louth County Council continues to monitor the situation and is making all preparations possible for the anticipated severe weather.

“We are in contact with all relevant agencies including An Garda Siochana and the HSE and the Civil Defence have been put on standby.

“The Director of Housing has instigated the putting in place of the cold weather response for homeless with SIMON and Drogheda Homeless Aid. “Crews are being as-

signed to gritting footpaths, clearing snow, assisting with traffic management, water services and any other works necessary.

Brine stations have been checked and filled as necessary and all gritter trucks are fully operational.

The Old Dundalk Society is holding its first lecture of the 2018 spring season on Wednesday February 28 at 8pm in the County Museum, Joceyln St. The lecture bu Dr Donal Hall, entitled ‘1919 – The Transformation of Dundalk’ will examine how the ending of the First World War and the beginning of the War of Independence transformed Dundalk.

Traditional Concert

The Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music will present a concert of Irish traditional music on Wednesday 7 March at 7pm in the MacAnna Theatre, DkIT. The concert takes place as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge and celebrates the launch of the Institute’s Irish Language Scheme.

Irish language song is an important and compulsory element of the BA (Hons) Applied Music course at the institute.

Marshes have appointed two new Heads of Fun Marshes Shopping Centre in Dundalk are delighted to announce two successful candidates for their Head of Fun event and competition that took place in centre on Saturday January 20 and 27.

Kaisha Lavery and EJ Dunne have been named as the new Head of Fun duo who will take the reins from the recently graduated Charlotte and Jamie, who did an amazing job.

The newly appointed lucky pair aged 10 and 11, will help Marshes provide lots of free fun for all children in Dundalk and continue to ensure Marshes is a fun and friendly place to visit for great family events.

The successful duo will advise Marshes management on children’s activities, feature in fun videos, review the latest trends, eateries and clothing and help organise key family events at Marshes from Easter activities to Santa’s Arrival.

Marshes would like to thank all the children who registered their interest and took part in the event across the two days.

It was an extremely tough decision for the judges to make due to the high standard of all the children who entered.

Increase in fire related incidents Pay or face jail There were a total of 1078 incidents attended by Louth Fire Brigades in 2017, compared to the 2016 total of 977 incidents. This increase is mainly accounted for by a large number of gorse fires and rubbish fires in the second quarter of 2017.

The number of incidents had been broadly in line with the previous year’s figures until that late spate of gorse fires spiked the figures over the 1000 mark.

Louth County Council also revealed that they received capital funding for its fleet from the DHPLG in 2017 and purchased a second-hand emergency tender

in the UK last year and will be taking delivery of five second-hand Scania fire appliances in early 2018.

Three of these appliances were delivered from the UK on Tuesday 6th February.

These are high quality appliances with low mileage, large crew cabs, excellent stowage and front and rear air suspension. They will be registered, serviced and prepared for use and expected to go on the ”run” by the end of February.

The addition of these six water tenders and an emergency tender to Louth Fire Service’s fleet is a major upgrade and will ensure

high quality frontline appliances, spare appliances and an adequate number of training appliances into the future. The Dundalk Training Centre interim upgrade is complete with the exception of the road traffic accident training ditch, which is expected to be completed

by April 2018. This training ditch will allow serious road accidents to be better simulated on training courses and will hopefully see increased use for Dundalk Training Centre.

Meanwhile, the follow-up to the Grenfell Tower fire in London has continued with the Fire Prevention Section

in Louth receiving the fire safety assessments of multistorey buildings of seven storeys and higher, which were requested. These assessments and inspections by the Fire Prevention Section indicate that there is not a fire spread risk from external cladding on these buildings. The Fire Prevention Section has been liaising with Approved Housing Bodies and upgrade works have started on properties of two storeys and more in which Council tenants are accommodated and which are operated by these AHBs. There are 29 such buildings in Louth.

A man was given a month to pay €3,000 compensation or face a spell in jail after being convicted of a number of motoring offences at Dundalk District Court.

Tom Maguire (23), 101 Doolargy Avenue, Muirhevnamor faced charges of dangerous driving, no insurance, no driving licence and two hit and run charges, arising out of an incident at Hoey’s Lane on May 29 last.

Solicitor Eleanor Kelly stated that the injured party had not been compensated but that her client was anxious to do so if given time.

The estimate for the damage was given as €3,000 and Judge John Coughlan noted that Mr Maguire had since May to address compensation.

He adjourned the case to March 14 in order for compensation to be paid.

Students raise funds for charity with Christmas Jumper Day

ACS ‘Amberflag’ committee with Ms Carmel Hancock.

ACS students raised a total of €1,101 by staging the Christmas Jumper Day in school.

This event was organised by the ‘Amberflag’ committee.

This committee was set up to promote mental health awareness in the school.

It is made up of stu-

dents from all year groups. Eileen Clarke, fifth year is Chairperson, Ciara Callis, fifth year is Assistant Chairperson and Conor McMahon, fifth year is Secretary.

The liaison teacher is Ms Sarah Crilly.

On the day all students in school were encouraged to wear

a Christmas jumper, prizes were awarded to the best jumpers in each year group.

It was an enjoyable day as students were happy and getting into the festive spirit.

Everyone contributed €2 and the monies collected were given to two charities. €825 was giv-

en to ‘SOSAD’, an organisation helping those dealing with suicide and €275 was given to ‘Strengthening Families’, a charity helping families going through difficult situations.

The cheque was presented to Carmel Hancock, ‘SOSAD’ representative.

Dundalk schools well represented in 2018 Junk Kouture competition Dundalk schools will be well represented in this year’s renewal of Junk Kouture with a total of fifteen entrants taking their place in the Eastern Regional finals which take place on the 5th of March in ‘The Helix’ in Dublin.

St Vincent’s lead the way with a total of nine entrants while Colaiste Rís are also well represented with four groups entering the competition. There are also entrants from Bush Post Primary and Coláiste Chú Chulainn.

The competition is launched annually in September with information packs being sent to all secondary schools across the country. Students are challenged to create a wearable couture design and submit the photos of their finished outfit online by midnight on January 26th 2018. A maximum of three students can work on a single design.

The rules stipulate that

designs must be made from reworked trash or other used materials that are beyond their intended purpose.

Colaiste Rís have a rich history in the Junk Kouture competition and only last year they were crowned Eastern Regional winners thanks to Emma Duffy, Grainne Byrne and Chloe Murden’s excellent Pandora Box design.

This year the school have four entrants taking their chances in the competition and one of the groups are busy canvassing to try and harness votes to reach the grand final later this year.

Nathan McKenna, Niamh Maye and Sophie Carr are three TY students in Coláiste Rís who have made an outfit out of materials used to make shoes.

The idea behind the creation is to raise awareness about the carbon footprint and they have entitled their design

‘A chance to change’.

Nathan McKenna who will model the outfit at the Eastern Regional Finals next month says the groups project incorporates music, design and performance.

“We all really enjoyed the whole experience of putting the outfit together and we are pleased with how the final product looks. Our performance is a bit dark to start off with but it ends on a positive note with the message that there is a possibility of a bright future if we look after the earth.

“We are busy campaigning for votes to make it through to the Grand Final so hopefully people will go online and support us,” noted Nathan.

Support for those with autism Specsavers Dundalk supports people living with autism STAFF at Specsavers Dundalk have completed a course, developed with The National Autistic Society, to support customers with autism.

Cycling Alliance urge Council to include cycle lanes in plans

lieve that long term public health, well-being, environmental and climate change concerns should be given priority consideration in this new Clanbrassil Street design so that the traffic separated cycle way should be provided. We therefore ask the public to make submissions in support of the safe cycleways.

“Louth County Council are planning

to spend €4m on an upgrade to Clanbrassil Street, Dundalk, and are asking the public for submissions. The road will be narrowed and the footpath widened but there is currently no inclusion of traffic separated cycle lanes,” explained Ollan.

“Cyclists are still being asked to cycle with the cars on the main street - this will not encourage people who are

nervous to try cycling or enable younger people to cycle safely to and from school.

“Traffic separated cycle lanes are viewed as standard in many other European towns and not including them in this upgrade is a lost opportunity and does not future proof the main street,” he added.

“Our view is that 80% of the length of the street is easily wide

enough to have a safe cycleway with car parking; as well as a wide footpath. There is a short narrow section of the street and this is indeed narrow, “ insisted Ollan.

Man pleads guilty to careless driving A man who pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving was fined €750 at Dundalk District Court.

Alan Jones (26) of Knockabbey, Louth, was observed driv-

ing his jeep at speed in Tallanstown on November 4 last year.

The patrol car was driving at 100kph as it followed the car which failed to stop at Mullacrew crossroads and proceeded

to Louth Village where Mr Jones stopped.

Solicitor Frank McDonnell stated that his client was a single man who worked as a farmer.

Dundalk Library is hosting two interesting events over the coming weeks.

Pupils and teachers throughout County Louth are eagerly preparing for Féile Dhún Dealgan, the annual Irish language Scoildrámaíocht festival. This year’s festival will take place in DkIT’s Mac Anna theatre on Friday March 2 from 10am to 1:40pm, with local schools at both primary and secondary level taking part. The festival gives students the opportunity to act, gain confidence and have fun all as Gaeilge.

Schools partaking in this year’s festival include Kilsaran National School, Bellurgan Na-

tional School, Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan, St. Mary’s College Dundalk, Redeemer Boys National School and Coláiste Lú.

Winners at the competition will go on to represent the region in Féile Laighean / the Leinster Provincial Festival.

Entrance is open to the public throughout the day and will be €1 for pupils / €4 for adults in what is sure to be a fulfilling and exciting day for all those involved. As the Irish proverb says, “Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sí.”

and is now over 80 years old with thousands of students from throughout the country taking part each year.

The Dundalk festival was reformed in 2014 after a gap of a number of years and its popularity has grown rapidly with great interest shown from local schools.

The Mac Anna theatre is a fitting venue as the original founder and chief organiser of Féile Dhún Dealgan for many years was Mai Nic Anna, a sister of the famous director and playwright Tomás Mac Anna, after whom the theatre is named.

The annual general meeting of Knights of Hibernia will take place in their Clanbrassil St premises on Sunday March 4 at Noon.

Banned For Two Years

A man who was convicted of careless driving was banned from the road for two years at Dundalk District Court.

John Maguire (28) with an address at 22 Fairymount Ave, Rocks Road, Kingscourt, Dundalk, was involved in a collision on the Carrickmacross Road, Dundalk, on February 9 last year.

The defendant, who didn’t appear in court, stated at the time that he was insured but was subsequently banned for four years for driving without insurance as a result of the incident.

In convicting, Judge John Coughlan also imposed a €200 fine.

Fair Deal Guide

A new Louth-produced guide has been launched aimed at simplifying the Fair Deal programme and allaying any fears older people in the county might have about the national nursing homes support scheme.

‘An Easy Guide to Applying for the Nursing Homes Support Scheme’ which was compiled by the County Louth Citizens and Information Services (CIS), as part of the Louth Age Friendly County Programme.

The guide, which was launched at the County Library, was devised to address many fears and misconceptions that older people were reporting to the CIS, Louth Older People’s Forum and various other groups throughout the county.

The Nursing Home Support Scheme, better known as Fair Deal, is a scheme of financial support for people who need long-term nursing home care.

Louth County Council prepare to celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge Louth County Council will celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge 2018 with a programme of cultural events of interest to all ages. The series of events will run from Thursday, March 1 to Saturday, March 17.

Events taking place throughout Seachtain na Gaeilge include: Quiz: Taking place at Dundalk Library on Wednesday, March 7 at 10.30am, this general knowledge quiz ‘as Gaeilge’ is aimed at primary school children. Cinema tickets are up for grabs for the winning team.

GAA Blitz: This under-10s hurling tournament will see club

teams compete for the inaugural Corn an Cathaoirleach Cup, speaking Irish on the pitch. The Blitz will take place at Louth County Council Sports Centre in Muirhevnamor on Saturday, March 10 from Noon to 3pm.

Poetry Competition: School children under 10 are invited to write a poem with the theme of ‘My County’ – ‘Mo Chontae’.

‘Lives in Translation’ is to An Táin Arts Centre as part of International Women’s Day 2018, on Thursday March 8 at 8pm Belfast based theatre company Kabosh Theatre presents ‘Lives in Translation’, the story of one woman, who in fleeing the conflict of her home, becomes trapped in the suffocating bureaucracy of immigration. Based on interviews with a female Somalian refugee, local support workers and community organisations, this poignant new drama follows a tenyear journey through Mogadishu, Dublin, Belfast and London.

The opening took place on Saturday February 15.

The artist Lisa Fingleton is passionate about ‘being the change’ she wishes to see in the world. She works and lives on a 20 acre organic farm, creating art and growing food. The exhibition is simultaneously funny and deadly serious.

Fingleton presents a sumptuous, visual feast of drawings, found objects

and films. Ideas and seeds are germinated, fertilised, pruned and nurtured before harvesting. Fingleton revels in the random, dynamic intersection between humans and nature and is unafraid to challenge perceived natural orders.

The work responds to the specificity of the gallery as an ex prison and articulates connections between freedom, hunger and food.

The hangman was called ‘Brian a muck’ (Brian of the pigs) and he lived in a lane behind the gallery called Squeeze Gut Alley.

Motorists warned of dangers as Storm Emma nears AA Ireland is calling on motorists to exercise additional caution when driving over the coming days, as weather conditions are expected to worsen significantly, with a heightened risk of frost, ice and snow.

Met Eireann have today issued a Status Orange weather warning for the east of the country from Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning, while a nationwide Status Yellow Weather Advisory is to remain in effect until at least Saturday. With driving and weather conditions expected to worsen significantly, motorists are being urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance between their car and any car in front of them, and to expect poor visibility conditions if driving in falling snow.

“While we have had some snow and icy conditions already in recent months, it looks like this coming week could see some of the worst weather conditions that we have seen in a number of years. The key message for motorists is to adapt your driving to the weather conditions, be on the lookout for vulnerable road users, and make sure your windscreen, windows and mirrors are fully de-iced before you start your journey. We’ve all seen someone driving around with only a few inches of their windscreen cleared and it’s one of the most dangerous practices mo-

torists could do,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs warned. “You’re putting yourself in a scenario where you can’t what’s on the road ahead of you clearly and you’ll also struggle to see any cyclists or pedestrians who may also be on the road.”

“The best advice is to add an extra fifteen minutes onto your normal commute and use that extra time to get your windows clear, as well as making allowances for the extra traffic you are likely to see on key routes.”

AA Rescue, the insurance intermediary’s breakdown service, is also making extra resources available in the coming days to accommodate an expected spike in breakdowns. AA Rescue patrols offer roadside assistance on a nationwide scale.

“Whenever temperatures dip there’s a few breakdown issues that motorists need to be particularly mindful of. If you have an older or weaker battery the sudden temperature dip may result in your car struggling to start after being idle overnight.

If your car has been unused for a number over the weekend and into the start of the week it can be worth taking it for a short drive before the weather worsens to ensure your battery is functioning correctly,” Faughnan added. “Secondly, whatever you do, don’t pour boiling water over your windscreen when trying to defrost it in the morning as it’s very likely to crack the glass. Warm water will get your windows clear and get you on the road, boiling water may leave you waiting for assistance.”
