Dundalk FC hit the jackpot in Iceland last Wednesday evening as they beat Icelandic side FH Hafnarfjordur on away goals to secure a guaranteed €1.2m windfall.

The Carrick Road outfit travelled to Iceland on the back of a slightly disappointing 1-1 draw in Oriel Park but thanks to a David McMillan brace the Lilywhites have reached the promised land in terms of Champions League prizemoney as they can add a cool €1.2m to last year’s pot of €550,000 they received after getting knocked out in the second qualifying round.

Francis completes gruelling trek

By Paul Byrne ONE of the most challenging awards in Scouting, the Explorer Belt, was successfully negotiated by local man Francis Meehan after he completed the gruelling 200km trek across Italy last week.

And it must be remembered that the €1.2m figure is the worst case scenario for Dundalk as if they beat Bate Borisov they are set to take in €4.2m in total, €3m for taking part in the final champions league qualifying round and €1.2m for reaching the Europa League group stages (which they would be parachuted into should they lose the fourth

round qualifier).

If the unthinkable happened and Dundalk managed to make it through to the group stages of the Champions League it would really be party time up in Oriel Park with the club in line to bank €10m for their efforts.

However, the focus for Dundalk now is on Bate Borisov where they know that even if they lose they will still be parachuted into a Europa League playoff game which will see them enter the Europa League group stages should they win.

Talk of €1.2m windfalls couldn’t be further from the situation the club found themselves

in just four years ago when then owner Gerry Matthews announced he was putting the lease up for sale as spiralling debts threatened to put the club out of business. A ‘Save our Club’ initiative was formed as lifelong supporters helped to stave off the very real threat of their club going to the wall.

The club was taken over by Fastfix owners Paul Browne and Andy Connolly who made a very astute move by getting in Stephen Kenny to manage the team.

Three years of success have followed as the club have grown with each passing year to become one of the fin-

est sides this country has ever seen. Back to back league titles were claimed for the first time in the club’s history and they are in good shape this season as they try and make it three league titles on the trot.

The only negative still surrounding the club is the messy situation regarding former owner Gerry Matthews who still holds the lease for Oriel Park. The ground which is in dire need of refurbishment cannot be upgraded until the lease situation is resolved. must also complete a number of challenges along the route before finding their way to the final destination using just a map and a compass.

Only eight scouts from Dundalk have ever completed this gruelling challenge and 24 year old Francis is delighted that he was able to become the ninth to receive the prestigious brown belt.

“The cut off age for the explorer belt challenge is 25 and it’s something that I’ve been thinking of doing for a couple of years now. I’m 24 now so I thought it’s now or never and I’m really delighted that I decided to go for it and the fact I completed the challenge makes it even better,” stated Francis.

“It’s a really tough challenge and one which you need to have some level of fitness before taking it on. Myself and

my teammate Jay were basically left in a town near Bologna called Crevalcore and we had to travel by foot on mainly rural routes trying to overcome language barriers and without pre-booked places to stay with temperatures regularly in the mid 30s each day.

“When we had finished walking each day it was literally a case of knocking on somebody’s door and asking them could we pitch our tent in their garden. We had a €5 budget each day so for food we generally cooked pasta on our little stove or sometimes the people who let us stay in their gardens came out with food for us.

“We both struggled with blisters and I had problems with falling arches in my foot which really began to hurt but thankfully we both struggled through and

we made it to our finishing destination in a place called Spettine in Northern Italy.

“When I found out that I had successfully completed the challenge I felt massive relief as well as a real sense of achievement. The explorer belt is probably the pinnacle of scouting achievement and I’m very proud to be able to bring it home to Dundalk. I would recommend this challenge to anybody but you must be fit both physically and mentally as it is very gruelling. I’d like to thank everybody who supported my fundraiser to help get me to Italy especially the North End Bar and St Patrick’s Scout Group.

“St Patrick’s is a really great scout unit and we are always looking for new leaders and young members to join so feel free to call in to us,” added Francis.

Parents express dismay at end of PEER WALK programme

Parents of young adults who have reaped huge benefits from a programme which seeks employment opportunities of 16-24 year olds with disabilities have hit out at the decision to extend the programme by just six months.

The WALK PEER (Providing Equal Employment Routes) programme has proved hugely beneficial to young adults since its inception three years ago providing numerous employment opportunities for young people with

New rules to protect children in cross-border family proceedings When families have disputes or international couples separate, cross-border judicial cooperation is crucial to give children a secure legal environment. The Commission recently proposed improvements to the EU rules that protect children in this context.

The key objective of the proposals is to ensure quicker and cheaper overall procedures. The changes also aim to ensure that children who are capable of forming their own views will be guaranteed an opportunity to express views in all proceedings concerning their case.

First Vice-President Timmermans said: "The simplified new rules we have adopted will bring benefits for families and children. They will gain from reduced timelines for settling proceedings and will avoid the heavy financial costs often linked to such procedures. We need to make sure that different legal regimes are compatible to minimise complications, delays, distress and uncertainty."

The updated rules are based on the assessment of the existing rules and aim to remedy the identified shortcomings. In particular, a key objective is to ensure quicker overall procedures given that time is of the essence in order to protect the best interests of the child in these cross-border parental responsibility disputes. More specifically, the following targeted changes are proposed:

The programme is jointly funded by the European Social Fund and the Department of Social Protection but last year it was announced that there would no longer be funding available for the programme meaning it would have to close.

Over the past six months there have been numerous talks between Government ministers and parents of young adults involved in the programme in an attempt to ensure WALK PEER would continue.

ment of Social Protection announced that they were making €150,000 available for the programme which would enable them to continue for six months. However, they warned all involved with the programme that this was a once off temporary source of funding and no further funding would be provided.

While the announcement was welcomed by Fergus O’Dowd TD, parents of young adults involved with the programme were not so enthusiastic about the news.

son Eoghan was involved with the WALK PEER programme said it made absolutely no sense to drag it out for another six months without doing anything to ensure the programme’s long term survival.

“To be honest if this wasn’t so serious you could call the whole thing a joke,” stated Peter.

“How on earth can you keep a project going for six months without knowing if that project has any sort of future.

“How can the staff of that programme motivate themselves if they are worried about their own

The last round of the Cycling League finished at the Long Woman’s Grave which meant a tough final 8km as the road goes uphill from the turn at Davy’s Pub all the way to the finish.

Early on in Race 1 scratch had closed the gap to Group 5, however instead of continuing to ride steady to catch Group 4 the riders started to attack each other. Not long before Carlingford Alan Bingham, Gary Gorman and Liam Dolan had managed to break away from the group, then on the long hill out of Carlingford Alan Grey and underage sensation Conor McKeown put in a huge effort to bridge the gap. This group of

five riders continued to ride hard and before the start of the climb had caught Group 1.

On the early slopes of the climb Bingham set a blistering pace and had whittled the group down to himself, Dolan and Grey. These three continued to the line were Grey took the win ahead of Bingham and Dolan in third.

Meanwhile in Race 2 Barry Mehan was the winner having proven too strong for everyone else on the tough drag to the finish.

John Lonae was next home pipping Peter Taffe. Padraic Murphy put in a massive performance on the circuit coming home inside the

top 10 in one of his first races back since a bad accident.

Rosena Lynch was first woman home and for a long time looked like she might take the win, having started in Group 1, but the long finishing straight proved to be her undoing as she was caught and passed in the final metres.

The league has just four rounds remaining and with Alan Bingham the only one of the top three to score points in the latest round he now sits in pole position.

Rosena Lynch is just outside the top three and if she continues to ride strongly in her debut season could take the league win outright.

One of the organisers, Peter Brannigan, hailed the exhibition as a great success with a large number of people attend-

They included former members and players along with current members, and also many visitors from other clubs.

He paid tribute to the efforts of those who put the exhibition together, and in particular, Willie Dixon, Fra Byrne and Gerard Duffy.

Doesn’t know why he took money

A staff member who removed money from a purse left behind by a customer was caught committing the offence on CCTV. As a result, Eamonn O’Farrell 201 Greenacres, Dundalk, was convicted and fined €300 when he admitted the offence at Dundalk District Court.

Evidence was given that a customer at Currys, Dundalk

Retail Park, left a purse containing €220 on the counter.

The defendant was seen on CCTV putting the purse below the counter but later he was observed removing the money from the purse.

The court heard that the defendant, who had a previous conviction for public order, was a 55-year-old father and grandfather. He had been an employee in Currys for two years and

previously worked in Harvey Norman.

The solicitor stated that his client doesn’t know why he took the money and is very remorseful. He accepts that he should have been more co-operative with the Gardai as he made no admission when initially questioned.

Judge William Hamill refused to consider the Probation Act as he imposed a conviction.

A woman who pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge was disqualified from driving for three years at Dundalk District Court. Bernadette Morris of Glenmore, Riverstown, admitted the offence on April 28 at Upper Glenmore. Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that the defendant, who had no previous convictions, was the sole carer for her son who lived in Newry. Judge William Hamill postponed the disqualification until January 12 next.

Clay shooting success for Louth team I

Clay shooting in Louth experienced their finest weekend to date last weekend as they dominated during the All Ireland championships which were held in Ardee.

For the first time ever the Louth team won the overall prize to mark an historic day for the Wee County’s clay shooters. The 12-strong team fended off the challenge of hot favourites Wexford to claim first prize in a highly competitive day’s shooting.

As well as earning team success Louth shooters also picked up individual honours with Louth Village youngster

Ryan Byrne following in the footsteps of experienced older brother Jake by picking up the U16 All-Ireland title. Jake’s team mate Michael O’Neill excelled in the

U21 competition eventually finishing in third spot to cap off a fine weekend for the Louth man.

ing a year ago showed she is a quick learner as she walked away with the All Ireland ladies title and there was success in the veterans categories also with

Gerry Woods and James Sharkey finishing first and third while Freddie McKenna came out on top in the super veteran’s section.

Last but not least

there was success for the Ardee Gun Club who finished second in the All Ireland club competition agonisingly just missing out on gold as they lost out to the eventual winners on the countback rule.

Louth team member Jake Byrne was thrilled with his team’s performances over the weekend noting that it represented the county’s finest ever performances during an All-Ireland.

Trying to get life back on track A 19-year-old man is trying to get his life back on track after having issues with drugs, Jason Conway of 56 Garrybawn, Dundalk, admitted causing damage estimated at €1,700 following an incident on October 4 last year.

Dundalk District Court heard that on that day Mr Conway was a trespasser at St Josephs National School, where he was seen to smash a leaded glass door with a fire extinguisher, causing damage valued at €76.

On the same site he also

damaged a dumper truck valued at €195 and an excavator valued at €1,426.

Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that his client had €1,400 compensation to hand over with another €300 outstanding.

He stated that the 19-year-

old, who had no previous convictions, had been involved in drugs at the time and doesn’t remember the incident. He is not involved in drugs now, while he is in a relationship with his partner expecting a child. Mr Lavery added that the defendant in-

tends to return to education.

Judge William Hamill stated that he wanted a Community Service Report and Probation Report as he adjourned the case to October 5. He ordered the balance of compensation to be paid by then.

International tennis returns

For a second year in row Dundalk tennis club will be hosting a junior international tennis championships which will attract players from across the globe.

This will be a stopping point for players who are seeking world ranking points in a quest to build on their

international ranking.

The top 100 players make it to the grandslams in tennis including the US Open, The French Open, the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

This year’s top ranked player in the boy’s section is Harry Butler ranked 534 from Great Britain.

In the girl’s section Ireland’s Sophia Deriv-

en leads the field with a ranking of 432.

Local man and Davis Cup ATP professional John McGahon initiated the event in 2015 in a bid to increase local awareness of this ever growing sport in the town and also to give Irish and local players the opportunity to compete and train alongside international tennis juniors.

Man is banned from driving for three years

A man who pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge was disqualified for three years at Dundalk District Court.

Nicholas Morgan of Whitehouse Cross, Dromiskin, was also fined €300 following

Brother and sister impress in US event Ten-year-old Aimee Collins and seven-year-old Aaron Collins from Ballagan, Cooley, returned triumphant recently after competing in the US Open World Martial Arts Championships in Orlando, Florida.

The US Open is the bestknown, largest, and most prestigious open martial arts championships in the world

with competitors from over 40 countries.

Undaunted by the competition, Aimee secured second place in both Extreme Forms and Creative Forms and fifth in Musical Forms, while her younger brother Aaron won second place in Creative Forms, fourth in Musical Forms and fifth in Extreme Forms.

Earlier this year Aimee and Aaron gained places on the Irish kickboxing team and will represent Ireland in the WAKO World Championships in Dublin in August.

The brother and sister are members of Irish Martial Arts Academy and train in Cooley and Dundalk up to four times per week.

Kevin leading the way in Dundalk Golf Club’s Captain’s Prize Kevin Redmond will lead the field into the Second Round of Maurice Soraghan’s Captain Prize after he shot a seven under par 65 in qualifying over the weekend.

The 20 handicapper has a one shot lead over Paul Matthews (25) and the final group next Sunday will be completed by Bobby McCarthy (17) who shot a 67, as did Jim Dwyer (9).

The 170 players, out of a field of 302, who shot 80 or better qualified for this Sunday’s second round.

The top 33 available players

are seeded and must play in their allocated time with the leaders going out last.

Unseeded players who have qualified for Sunday can now book their places via the BRS system while non-qualifiers will be able to play on Saturday.

Bobby McCarthy, who currently lies third in the Captain’s Day had an eventful day on Saturday.

Having shot 67 in the morning qualifier he then returned in the afternoon to help the club’s Newsam Cup team reach the final as they beat Townley Hall 3-0

with two matches called in.

With three of the five matches at home, Dundalk got off to the perfect start as Eamonn McEneaney and Nigel Giff scored an early win and Bobby McCarthy and Hugh Reilly were equally impressive in claiming victory by the 14th hole. When word filtered through that Jim Gollogley and Sean O’Sullivan had won on the 15th green at Townley Hall the remaining two matches were called in with Adrian Kenny and Ken Mulholland walking down the 18th and the impressive

Dundalk must now wait on the identity of their next opponents but the final will take place on September 3 at Royal Tara.

Best wishes to the club’s Barton Shield team who head to Howth on Friday morning to face Laytown & Bettystown in the Leinster quarter-final. A semi-final against either Portmarnock or Carton House awaits the winner. The competition features two foursomes pairings playing off scratch.

Gregory tees off at World Deaf Golf Championships

Local golfer Gregory McCaughey will represent his country at the World Deaf Golf Championships for the fifth time this week with this year’s renewal taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The talented golfer will join his five Irish teammates as they prepare to take on some of the best golfers in the world during the four day tournament.

Gregory who plays out of Dundalk Golf club first represented Ireland in Dublin back in 1995 and has since travelled to Canada, Scotland and Sweden to take part in the World Deaf Golf Championships.

The Point Road man has a handicap of 8.1 and according to the man himself he has been putting in many hours down at Dundalk Golf Club in preparation for

“I’ve been playing this game a good 20 years now and it’s a really enjoyable pastime.

It’s a huge honour to put on the jacket with the Irish badge on it and I am determined to do myself and my family proud out in Copenhagen this week,” concluded Gregory.

Mans is handed a three year road ban

A man who crashed his son’s car into the back of another vehicle was banned from driving for three years after pleading guilty to a drink driving charge.

Colm Grant of Rathrole, Knockbridge, was also fined €150 for the offence, while handed a ban of two years and €400 fine in respect of a no insurance charge by Judge William Hamill.

The court heard that on April 30 this year Gardai were called to road traffic accident at Loughantarve, Knockbridge, where Mr Grant had rear-ended another car. Gardai no-

ticed a smell of alcohol from the defendant who was taken to Dundalk Garda Station.

Defence solicitor stated that Mr Grant is a 63-year-old father of three adult children and has been a widower for 15 years. He had been drinking the day before and took his son’s car without permission.

The defendant’s son had been working in Scotland and left the car with his father.

The court heard that Mr Grant had worked up to three years ago but was made redundant after the proprietor of the business passed away.

Local acts battle it out for place at Electric Picnic

Musicians 19 Vibez, David Keenan and Sonnets and Sisters from Dundalk are among the 30 artists

and bands shortlisted in 2fm’s Play The Picnic with Oxfam competition and in with a chance of

playing at Electric Picnic.

Earlier this summer RTÉ 2fm, in conjunction with Oxfam and Electric Picnic, put a call out to artists and bands across the country to compete for a coveted live set at the country’s biggest music festival.

19 Vibez are rapper Emmet Hayes (20) Muirhevnamor and vocalist Isaac Ndlovu (21) from Church Street who combine hip hop and reggae.

David Keenan (22) is a singer/songwriter from Knockbridge who has been composing music since the age of 15.

Folk-pop group Sonnets and Sisters consist of Stephanie Winters (22), Anton Hande (25) and Saidhbhin Gorham (23) who all hail from

Dundalk and Harry Stover (20) from Athboy, Co. Meath.

The three acts were shortlisted from hundreds of entries and are now part of a public text-to-vote to decide if they will be one of 10 acts to play Oxfam Ireland’s Oxjam Stage at this year’s Electric Picnic festival in Stradbally Estate, Co. Laois, from September 2 to 4.

Fane Bridge Girl takes part in Miss Macra All roads lead to Thurles for the August Bank Holiday weekend to support Louise Kearney, from outside Louth Village who is representing her local Macra, Fane Bridge at the International Miss Macra festival.

This is an annual event hosted by Clonoulty/Rossmore Macra na Feirme and runs from Friday July 29 to Monday August 1. This year celebrates the 45th anniversary of the festival.

Louise joined Fane Bridge Macra in September 2015 and has been an enthusiastic, vibrant member since. Her particular inter-

est has been competitions involving public speaking, placing second in this year’s county round of the impromptu speaking. Louise has recently been elected assistant PRO for the local club and is very proud to be representing both her club and Louth Macra na Feirme this weekend.

The festival contestants will begin to arrive in the Anner Hotel, Thurles on Friday afternoon where they will be taken on a trip to Coolmore Stud. Later on there will be a “90s” themed night in the Hayes Hotel.

Saturday will see the

contestants sitting down to interviews with the judges leading into a cabaret that night to give the ladies a chance to showcase their party pieces. Louise hopes to give a rendition of a poem by Seamus Heaney.

There will be live music and a DJ in the ‘Dome’ at Semple stadium until the small hours.

A family fun day with a BBQ in the local GAA field will keep all ages amused on the Sunday afternoon.

Later that night at the Gala Banquet, the International Miss Macra 2016 will be crowned.

Louth TDs meet Submissions sought on IDA on eBay jobs development scheme Louth TDs met with senior officials from the IDA on Monday to advocate for eBay to remain in Dundalk.

Speaking after the meeting, Gerry Adams and Declan Breathnach outlined the case they put forward.

“Today’s meeting with senior officials from IDA was to lobby for every effort to be made to ensure that an expanded eBay operation

should remain in Dundalk.

“The IDA officials are restricted in what they can say about commercial transactions and this is understandable. However local Oireachtas members put the case that Louth remains the very best location for an expanded eBay to base its operation and a very strong case was made for the company to remain in Dundalk”, they stated.

ON a wet and windy Sunday afternoon in Dromiskin, a resurgent Dundalk pulled off the unlikeliest of victories with a wonderful performance in the field against Malahide Fourths.

After winning the toss, captain Andy Williams elected to bat and sent in Michael Mullen and Brent Higginbotham to open. The pair set themselves quickly, and looked comfortable pushing singles and playing positive cricket.

The loss of Mullen after 10 overs didn’t faze his partner, as Higgingbotham went on to make a personal best of 20 from top spot.

A man who admitted driving carelessly on the M1 motorway was fined €250 at Dundalk District Court.

Martin Malone of Plaster, Mountpleasant, Dundalk was observed by Gardai on May 12 this year driving at excessive speed. When they pursued him he reached speeds of 180kph while he drove in close proximity to other cars

and then crossed three lanes before driving up the slip lane at exit 16.

Barrister Irene Sands stated that while her client had previous convictions, he had nothing for this type of offence. She added that the 26-year-old father of one needed his licence as he works in Navan.

AA: "Farcical Speed Limit" Dublin City Council are proposing to bring in a 30km/h speed limit across the whole of Dublin city between the canals. They then plan to extend this even further to include places like Ringsend, Sandymount, Crumlin, Drimnagh & Phibsboro.

This is clumsy and unnecessary and will do more harm than good for road safety. It is being sold as a road safety measure but it is not.

AA does support 30 km/h zones and Dublin City should have plenty of them, but when you use 30 it should be properly designed. It should be in sympathy with the engineering layout of the road and should be essentially self-policing. Instead the Council have essentially coloured in the whole of the city centre.

This change would compel motorists to behave in a way that would fail the driving test today.

That is just not sensible and people will know it.

It is of course true that when crashes happen at slower speeds they do less damage. If you have a choice between whether to be hit by a car at 30 km/h or to be hit at 50 km/h it is absolutely clear that you would be far better off at the lower speed.

There are plenty of studies that demonstrate this and I don’t know of a single sensible argument against it.

But that is not what is

actually happening in Dublin or in our other urban environments.

Most of the truly horrible crashes that hurt or kill people involve trucks or buses in collision with cyclists and pedestrians at speeds lower than 30 kmh, very often involving heavy vehicles turning left.

This is why none of the bodies with any road safety expertise are asking for this measure – the RSA, Gardai, the Department of the Environment, the AA. The RSA’s policy on 30 km/h limits is very much the same as the AA’s; they should be used extensively but they must be properly designed and engineered and they must be supported by the local community.

One of the big problems for road safety in Ireland is badly set speed limits.

They undermine respect for the system in general and feed conspiracy

theories.

The AA lobbied strongly, and successfully, to get rid of ridiculous 80 km/h signs on country boreens with grass growing up the middle. We did this not because anyone was trying to do 80 km/h on them but because they brought the whole system into disrepute.

This will do the same. It will carelessly apply 30 km/h limits on clearly unsuitable roads. It will bring speed limits into deserved contempt and will be ignored.

The measure is going out for public consultation now. I hope that people will express their concern but I doubt it. Processes like this do not excite people, at holiday time with the football on.

But silence should not be taken for assent. When the flurry of bonkers 30 signs appear on unsuitable roads everywhere there will be a backlash.

Better to get it right at the start. Use 30 km/h limits, use lots of them. Probably 90% of the city centre. But do it in the right way and don’t delude yourself that by putting a silly number on a pole you have done something good for road safety. Conor Faughnan, AA Ireland.
