St Peter’s Athletic Club in Dromiskin were the target of mindless vandals last weekend when a fire was started maliciously which burned much of their equipment. The club who have a field behind St Joseph’s GAA club use a large storage container which contains all of their equipment including shot putts, javelins, hurdles and starting blocks.

There were also spades, rakes and large tyres burnt which were also being used by the GAA club for strength training. Tom McGrane a member of St Peter’s Athletic club hit out at the vandals who he says caused damage which will probably cost the club a

four-figure sum.

“Unfortunately, on Saturday evening our club was targeted by mindless vandals who set fire to a container we had in the field which housed all of our equipment. On Sunday morning we had to sift through the wreckage to try and salvage what we could.

There was plenty of damage including specialised equipment such as hurdles which can cost up to €100 per hurdle. We also have a generator stored in there for the floodlights and there seems to be damage to it as well.

“It’s just a senseless act really which damages a facility which is used by the whole community. We have coaches in the club who give Continued on Page 2

up their time to help the 60 or so members we have in St Peter’s Athletics Club and now this week it looks like we will not be able to train.

“We will do our very best to carry on as usual but this definitely has a detrimental effect on our club and I really have to wonder what goes through somebody’s head when they commit an act of vandalism like this.

“These people are choosing anti-social behaviour over sport and it affects the whole community. We have people who come into the field just to train themselves sometimes and the field is always open for anybody in the area to use. Unfortunately the people who did this damage on Saturday evening don’t seem to care about the community and it’s left to us now to try and replace all the damaged equipment,” stated Tom.

Louth County Council have outlined steps they have taken to help ensure local biodiversity can thrive.

The local authority were responding to a motion from Green Party councillor Marianne Butler which asked that Louth County Council recognise their duty of care towards local biodiversity.

The motion read: “In light of the ongoing pressure on pollinating insect populations and the habitats

they rely upon, that Louth County Council recognises its duty of care to our local biodiversity and adopts the operational Guidelines for Councils contained in the All Ireland Pollinator Plan 2015 to 2020 issued by the National Biodiversity Data Centre”.

In reply Louth County Council outlined all the work that has been done in recent months to encourage pollinators.

“LCC has been taking account of the need to encourage pollinators in planning

and carrying out its landscape management works.

Tasks specific to this objective carried out to date by the council include: The planting of a total of 35,000 different bulbs species in various areas over the last 18 month – These will provide earlier nectar for bees and other insect species.

St Nicholas Qtr Traders & Residents are calling on elected representatives and candidates to avoid Bridge St for postering as a mark of support for the community. The group has noted that many areas, including Blackrock, have made similar requests for environmental reasons, but have pointed out that their request is to highlight concern and frustration over the lack of support for regenerating the streets.

Teams jet out for golf’s ultimate grudge match

It has been billed as one of the biggest grudge matches in local sport and this weekend will see the latest renewal of rivalries as The Lions take on The Exiles to claim bragging rights among the members of the Ad Hoc Golf Society.

With tensions akin to Louth V Meath or Dundalk v Drogheda, the prize for the winners is more than simply silverware as both teams have been putting in serious practise over the past few months in an attempt to establish themselves as top dogs.

The lessons of the last 20 years have dictated that a neutral venue is required to host an event of such magnitude and this year Benelmadena had been given the honour of welcoming the two teams for what is the 19th staging of the event.

Around 20 years ago a group of friends formed a golf society, and knowing very little

about societies it was only apt that the name they used for their group was the Ad Hoc. After ventures around Ireland for a number of years they expanded their society far and wide across Europe. On Saturday next the 16 lads will depart for the tournament made up of two days Ryder Cup and two days Mardon Shield.

The shield is a perpetual trophy named after two founder members Brendan O’Meara and Seamus Gordon who have sadly since passed on.

This is the highpoint of the trip and has been

won previously by both Brendan’s sons, Brendan and Dualta, and Seamus’ son, Damian. Other notable winners include Stephen Murphy, Paul Tobin, Seamus Bailey and Kevin Gordon, Gerry Gotham and Donard Duffy.

The second event is the much-anticipated Ryder Cup which is made up of The Lions (eight players within the Holy Family Parish) and The Exiles,. After wining seven-in-a-row early on in the trip The Lions have lost the last few.

However, under the guidance of their captain this year, Brendan O’Meara they firmly

believe they can retake the trophy. With months of preparation he has left no stone unturned in his quest for glory. His seven team mates Seamus Bailey, Tony McBride Stephen Murphy, Derek Teather, Paul Tobin, the experienced Sean Gordon and his brother Dualta have been regularly seen on courses around the North East practising.

The Exiles team that will be hoping to pile more misery on their opponents includes, Kevin Gordon, Ian Brodigan, Michael Begley, Gerry Gorham, Noel Murtagh, Damian Gordon, Donard Duffy and Peter Lynn.

Dundalk FC announce new chief executive Dundalk FC has announced the appointment of Mark Devlin as Chief Executive.

Previously Chief Executive at Brentford FC between 2011 and 2018, Mark brings over 20 years of experience to Dundalk FC, having also worked as Chief Executive at Queens Park Rangers FC and Swindon Town FC. Commenting on the appointment, Dundalk FC chairman Mike Treacy said: “After a thorough and exhaustive interview process, during which the board have interviewed a number of potential candidates, we are confident that we have found the right person to drive the club forward and help us achieve our

goals as a business.

“While at Brentford, Mark led the West London club’s ascension from League One to the Championship. Crucially, Mark, demonstrated a number of key attributes that are important to us as we seek to take the business to new heights - amongst them, modernising club operations, increasing and engaging with the fan base and was heavily involved in the planning of the new Brentford Community Stadium.

Speaking on his appointment, Devlin added: “I am thrilled to have been given the opportunity to become Dundalk FC’s Chief Executive, and I can’t wait to

begin work in my new role.”

“Joining the champions of Ireland is a huge honour. I intend to build upon the excellent work that has been done at the club in recent years, and aim to grow Dundalk FC into a bigger, better and stronger club, on and off the pitch.

Women’s Aid Dundalk

Women’s Aid Dundalk is an organisation which supports women and children who are/have experienced domestic violence. Refuge accommodation and support is available to women and their children on a round the clock basis, offering a listening ear, non-judgemental advice and assistance where and when it is needed and wanted.

Ann Larkin, Women’s Aid Dundalk said “Women’s Aid Dundalk seeks to work towards the elimination of violence against women and their children in their own homes.

The staff run awareness and support groups within our community, programmes include “This is Me” and “The Power to Change”. Their secondary school awareness workshop “Expect Respect”, is successfully helping young people to think about the relationships in their lives, the warning signs of an unhealthy relationship and if necessary, the help that is available to them while “Safe Hands” is a programme for primary schools.

Additional services include, a 24 Hour Helpline, 1-2-1 Support Sessions, Outreach Clinics, Supported Housing, Advocacy & Accompaniment, a Drop in Court Clinic, Awareness Raising and Training.

Failed in bid to avoid drink driving conviction A woman who attempted to escape a drink driving conviction on a technicality was banned from the road for three years at Dundalk District Court.

Anne Marie Reilly (41) of 34 Riverside Drive, Dundalk, who was described as having a “sickening” smell of alcohol when stopped by Gardai, argued that her detention

in Dundalk Garda Station was unlawful and that the case should be dismissed.

Solicitor Paula Tiernan argued that the State was unable to prove the defendant’s detention as the member in charge on the night was not present in court to give evidence.

She stated that as a result, the detention was unlawful and consequently

everything that happened thereafter in the station was unlawful.

However, Insp Liam Archbold, argued that the arresting Garda was present in the Garda Station when the detention was completed and gave that evidence in court.

Seachtain na Gaeilge in St Vincent’s As part of the ‘Seachtain na Gaeilge’ celebrations taking place nationwide in March, a group of students from St Vincent’s Secondary School were invited to the Mansion House in Dublin by Conradh na Gaeilge for the launch of their ‘Lá na Meáin Sóisialta’ or ‘Social Media Day’. Due to the regular support of Conradh na Gaeilge by the school and participation in many of

its organised events over the past number of years, as well as the culture and emphasis placed upon the Irish language within the school, St Vincent’s was one of four schools in the country to be invited to the event, the first of its kind for Conradh na Gaeilge.

When the defendant put down the window the Garda stated that the smell

Ms Reilly was arrested and taken to Dundalk Garda Station where a breath test revealed that she was over the limit for driving.

The court heard that the defendant had a previous conviction for drink driving in 2009. Judge John Coughlan fixed recognisances in the event of an appeal.

The competition is part of ActionAid’s women’s rights programme, funded by Irish Aid, which promotes engagement with the Irish public to raise awareness about these global issues. The women’s rights programme, which was nominated for a Dóchas innovation award in 2018, works to end early girl marriage, prevent gender-based violence, gain land rights for women and help children receive an education. ActionAid Ireland uses a Behaviour Change approach to this work in Ethiopia, Kenya and Nepal; the approach

has helped participating women and girls, men and boys, and traditional and cultural leaders to move away from damaging behaviours.

The speeches were judged on delivery, writing skills and un-

derstanding of the topic.

Leah gave an inspiring speech on women’s rights but was pipped to the post by the two winning students, Clodagh Boyce from Meath and Kirsten Soney-Ituen from Carlow. The win-

ning students clearly demonstrated their enthusiasm towards human rights in a superb display of research, critical thinking and originality.

The two winning students scooped the coveted first prize, a visit to ActionAid’s new programme in Greece in June, accompanied by their teachers. There they will learn more about ActionAid’s Protection and Empowerment Program working with refugee women living in areas of Athens and visit the Athens support centre, which supports Greek people facing financial problems and social exclusion. The visit will give students a taste of ActionAid’s programme

approach and work with women on the ground.

“This is the fifth year of the Speech Writing Competition. We received our most entries to date and are humbled by the effort and enthusiasm that goes in to every entry. This year’s finalists displayed excellent knowledge and understanding of the importance of championing women’s rights across the globe. Giant stride for Sophia with launch of Happy Feet Fund Sophia Griffin’s chances of making it to America for life changing pioneering surgery took another giant stride last Friday evening with the official Launch Night of Happy Feet for Sophia in the Lisdoo, Dundalk.

Three-year old Sophia lives with Spastic Diplegic Cerebral Palsy & PVL brain injury, leaving it hard for Sophia to walk and enduring hours upon hours of treatments and the use of walking aids.

Like fellow Dundalk girl Zoe Murphy, who now has the opportunity to go to the States thanks to the huge generosity in fundraising €100,000, Sophia’s parents

– Gerry and Caitriona – are hoping that through their efforts and the many others who have joined them in fundraising, that Sophia will have her day.

Caitriona said she is hoping that everyone enjoyed the launch night in the Lisdoo and that through this they can help boost their fundraising efforts.

“We feel we can’t deny Sophia this life changing treatment and like so many others we have had to ask and depend on people’s generosity. While Friday was the Official Launch Night, we have already had a number of fundraisers which have already taken place as people have been

so quick to support us, running in sports events, allowing us collection days etc.

“We are overwhelmed with the support shown to us, particularly so soon after Zoe’s campaign. We are equally thrilled that they realise Sophia too deserves the chance to be able to walk unaided.

Acting Principal Michelle Dolan worked for 15 years in the North in a highly regarded Integrated school, New-Bridge Integrated College, based in Loughbrickland a village near Banbridge Co Down.The current principal, Anne Anderson, recently approached St Louis with an opportunity to participate in a cross-border project exploring identity and diversity.

to the group and a meeting of interested staff and principals was held in St Louis on Friday February 15 with representative from Corrymeela Peace and Reconciliation Centre and Glencree Centre for Peace & Reconciliation.

It was agreed that 15 Second Year students from each school would participate over the next few months, visiting the two reconciliation centres and each school to learn about the different identities, cultures, beliefs represented in a

diverse new Ireland and work together through Art to explore issues and grow in understanding.

Like St Louis, the ethos of New-Bridge is one of welcome and inclusion with a strong emphasis on the wellbeing of both staff and

students. Art teacher Aine McEnaney is very excited to be involved in the venture: “We are always looking out for new projects for our students.

The new Junior Cycle Art Specification lends itself well to collaboration with others and we

are thrilled to be part of such an exciting Cross Border project, especially at this very interesting time in EU politics.”

A recent WholeSchool Inspection report on Management, Teaching & Learning in St Louis Dundalk found that “The quality of school leadership and management is exemplary; the members of the whole school community work together to ensure that each student’s individual needs are met in an inclusive environment.”

This exciting crossborder project is another way to be as inclusive as possible, to enrich the lives of our students and develop 21st Century key skills.

Large crowd gather to pay respects to tragic trio A large crowd gathered on Sunday evening in Carlingford for the candlelight vigil in memory of Ruth Maguire, Shane McAnallen and Martin Patterson. The Carlingford choir provided music and representatives from the victims families, An Garda Síochána, local clergy, local councillors, Greenore Coast Guard, Kilkeel RNLI, HM

Coastguards, Dundalk Sub Aqua, Ambulanace Service and Red Cross attended.

The town fell silent as they payed their respects to the trio who died in tragic circumstances last weekend. The body of Ruth Maguire, originally from North Belfast was found in the water after she had gone missing from a hen party in the town in the early

hours of Sunday morning in what has been described as a tragic accident.

There were also prayers for friends Shane McAnallen from Castlewellan, and Martin Patterson, from the Bryansford area outside Newcastle who lost their lives following a single vehicle crash on the R173 road in Carlingford, in the early

hours of Bank Holiday Monday.

The vigil was organised by the Cooley Community Alert facebook page to offer comfort to the grieving families as well as given the community a chance to show their support following a tragic weekend for the area. The organisers released a short statement thanking

everybody who came out for the vigil.

“On behalf of the community alert can I thank everyone who came tonight and helped in any way. The families would like to pass on their thank you to you all and were overwhelmed by the numbers who came and showed the grief we as a community share with them.”

Ard Dealgan project hits a glitch Sinn Féin Councillor Anne Campbell has said all work has ceased at Ard Dealgan about two weeks ago.

“I have been monitoring the work at the Halliday’s Mill complex, formerly known as Ard Dealgan, on Quay Street for some time and noticed that work appeared to have stopped.

“It has been confirmed to me that work has ceased a couple of weeks ago due, I understand, to one of the backers of the project pulling out,” stated the Sinn Fein

councillor.

The apartment complex was in the process of being stripped out and refitted in order to provide 68 units and work was to be completed by the end of this year.

“This Project was to house upwards of 60 families and it can’t be put on the long finger again.

Sinn Féin have long campaigned for this eye sore to be developed and it looked as if the nightmare was finally coming to an end and now we have hit a glitch,” stated Cllr Campell.

Ard Dealgan was described by Sinn Fein in the past as being a ‘magnet for anti-social activity’.

“I will be raising this as a matter of urgency with Louth County Council and exploring whatever options are available to get this matter speedily resolved,” continued Cllr Campbell.

“There are serious issues to be addressed but at this stage everyone wants to see this project completed and it is in no-one’s interest to see it stall or falter,” she added.

Local dancers in television semi-final Keeping it in the family at Dundalk GC

Three local teenagers were part of a talented dance troupe who wowed the judges on Ireland’s Got Talent last weekend.

Fly Youth, including three local teens Caitlin Rooney, Lonan Murphy and Nicole Ellis, were extremely excited to be chosen for the live semi-finals of Ireland’s Got Talent which will take place this Saturday night.

Sixteen-year old Caitlin Rooney from Knockbridge was understandably delighted to have made it to the semi-finals of the popular competition. The trio are part of the 23 strong dance troupe who have been mentored by Kerri and Zacc Milne.

“We were so nervous at the deliberation show last week when we were waiting to find out if we’d made it to the live shows but the excitement was amazing when Louis Walsh said we’d got through.

“We just really hope that the whole of Dundalk get behind us now and vote for us on Saturday, we would be so grateful because to get to the finals would be a dream come true for us all.

“We’ve been working so hard and are excited for everyone to see our piece. We’ve been working on a brand new routine and it’s something that we hope people will love,” stated Caitlin.

Support for Dearey’s drinking fountain idea

Green Party councillor Mark Dearey has expressed his delight that his motion to install drinking fountains in public parks around the county has been adopted.

Mark was speaking after this month’s Louth County Council meeting where he brought forward a motion which stated: “That Louth County Council install drinking fountains in our public parks and in the future development or regeneration of

key civic spaces in towns and villages in Louth. Such an initiative would enhance the urban commons and reduce the generation of single use plastic and subsequent littering.”

The motion was a popular one amongst his fellow councillors and in reply Louth County Council said that they will examine the matter and give consideration to the project. According to Mark the idea has already been

adopted in places such as Fingal County Council and has proved a success.

“This is a pretty simple low-cost idea and I feel that it is a great opportunity to promote health, money-saving and the environment. This ties in nicely with the Green Party’s Healthy Ireland Strategy as well as our anti-litter strategy and I would be hopeful that we will see these fountains up and running by the summer.

“Drinking fresh water instead of sugary drinks is obviously much better for both children and adults and I would hope if there is water available in parks to use then we would also see a reduction in the amount of discarded plastic bottles.

“The chief executive indicated that she would be willing to begin a pilot scheme in the near future but as my colleague Anne Campbell noted the pilot scheme has

already been done given that Fingal County Council have this scheme up and running already. We can ask them for guidance and advice if needs be and I feel that it would be more cost effective to get a number of these fountains up and running rather than just one for a pilot. I would hope that this scheme will be up and running but in saying that I do respect that we have budgetary constraints,” stated Mark.

While Michael Browne has clearly been the form player in the 2019 Winter Series, sponsored by Tiernan’s Centra Blackrock, it was his son Mark who came out on top in Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition.

The 12 handicapper shot 41pts and edged out club president Dessie Ward on countback thanks to a sizzling back nine which yielded 24pts.

Ward had the consolation of taking the Category 2 prize while Billy Cairns (6) edged out Josh Mackin (1) on countback in Category 1 after both had returned 39pts. Peter McCaughey (19) claimed Category 3 with 40pts.

Gerry Murray (10) took the Bank Holiday Monday Open Stableford Singles with a score of 42pts.

He covered the front

nine in 20pts after parring three of the first four holes for a 10pt return and down the back he picked up another 22pts helped by four three point pars including one at the 18th and that proved decisive as Nicholas MacShane (17) and Adrian Kenny (19) both finished on 41pts.

MacShane took second overall on countback with Kenny claiming Category 3 while Colin Roche (5) took Category 1and Fergal Duffy (16) won Category 2.

The first inter-club action of the year takes place on Saturday when our All-Ireland Fourball team meets Greenore in the preliminary round.

This is a competition for players between 15 and 19 handicap and Frank Byrne’s team face three matches away with the other two at home.

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) in conjunction with RMIT University, Australia has today announced an exciting new partnership with world-leading distiller, The Great Northern Distillery (GND) to deliver a global marketing project to undergraduate Business & Management students as part of its award-winning Global Programme.

The partnership provides students with the opportunity to work on a live project and develop market entry strategy for Irish whiskey into a number of key target Asian markets.

The Global Programme is a unique work-based

learning initiative developed by the School of Business & Humanities at DkIT which aims to equip students with the job-ready skills required to become the next generation of business leaders through client observation and engagement with global companies. Participating students wil l have the opportunity to experience working as part of a diverse, global marketing team as they collaborate with colleagues across different time zones, geographies and cultures.

For the purposes of the programme, Great Northern Distilleries is treated

as a client and the students will work as consultants to deliver the commerciallyfocused research brief.

Students will develop insights and research that will be examined by GND with a view to supporting their entry to the Asian market.

Students are assessed at various stages throughout the programme and the quality of their overall report, performance in group work, client presentation and participation in the group study tour will all contribute to their overall grade.

Students are also required to complete a reflective journal which is

designed to encourage students to reflect on their learnings outcomes and to think about how their future career can benefit from this global programme.

John Sisk, Director of the BA in Digital Marketing, Communication & Public Relations DkIT and lead coordinator of the Global Programme also added: “The opportunity for our students to work alongside industry in realworld commercial settings is critically important for the development of jobready skills because it allows them to apply academic learning to the professional workplace.”

Clarity needed on Dundalk Primary Care Centre - Adams Sinn Féin TD for Louth Gerry Adams has criticised the Minister for Health for his failure to deliver a new Primary Care Centre in Dundalk following information received this week in response to parliamentary questions tabled by Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson Louise O’Reilly TD. Gerry Adams said: “Dundalk Primary Care

Centre simply does not feature on a schedule of Primary Care Centres which are currently operational, under construction or at advanced planning stage.

“This is despite the Health Minister informing me in August 2018 that construction work on Dundalk Primary Care Centre would commence in 2019 with an expected opening in 2020.

“I have written to the Minister for Health asking him to urgently clarify the position and to indicate when a new Primary Care Centre, with capacity to facilitate Community Mental Health services, will be delivered in Dundalk.

“In 2006 ‘A Vision for Change’ recommended integration of Community Based Mental Health Services and other

Primary Care medical services.

At the conference, Helen McEntee TD, Minister of State for European Affairs dispelled any suggestion of a hard border and committed her government’s support for border businesses: “The Irish Government is not planning for, thinking about or will allow a hard border.”

such as tax, customs, transport and logistics, as well as HR issues.

Speaking at the conference, Chief Executive Officer of Newry Chamber, Colm Shannon said: “The conference

demonstrated the cross cooperation that exists at a local level between the Chambers in Newry and Dundalk.

Irrespective of the outcome of Brexit we are determined to continue to work together to support our businesses and improve the local economy.”

PRO of Dundalk Chamber Paddy Malone said the line up of speakers on the day was excellent and they covered so many issues which are relevant to all businesses today.

The conference was supported by Louth County Council, Newry Mourne and Down District Council, Louth Enterprise Office Louth and IntertradeIreland.

Dundalk Return For Children’s Fitness Initiative

The return of its popular ‘Fit Squad’ children’s fitness initiative to two Dundalk schools sees Fyffes nationwide drive to encourage fitness and healthy eating continue apace.

Fuel Prices Continue Upwards Trend After a brief reprieve from climbing fuel prices to start 2019, motorists have seen the cost of a litre of petrol and diesel rise for the second successive month according to AA Ireland.

The AA’s latest fuel prices survey has found that the cost of a litre of petrol has increased by almost 2c in the past month, increasing from 134.5c to the current average nationwide price of 136.2c. Meanwhile, diesel car owners received slightly worse news as the average price of a litre of diesel has climbed by over 3c to a current level of 133.0c.

“While this latest increase is a little bit of bad news for motorists across the country, it is worth remembering that in the second half of 2018 we were seeing average prices of 147.9c and 141.9c for petrol and diesel respectively. Ultimately, as it stands the situation is one which represents a minor improvement on the latter half of 2018, but one which still highlights the effect of punitive taxation on those who rely on the private car to get to work,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated.

Among the factors contributing to the increase in pump prices, is a minor surge in the cost of crude oil. Within the past month, the cost of a barrel of crude oil has risen from approximately $62 to a

current rate of between $66 and $69. However, according to the AA’s analysis almost two thirds of the cost of a litre of petrol consists of taxation, including VAT and excise duty, with taxes making up slightly over 57% of the cost of diesel.

“We can spend all the time in the world analysing the impact that external factors such as crude oil prices or European wholesale rates have on what we pay at the pump, but the truth is that these factors only account for about 40% of the per litre price,” Faughnan added. The majority of what we pay consists of various taxations, some of which were introduced as temporary measures during the economic downturn and have since remained in place, meaning that the power to do something to make the cost of commuting to work a little more affordable rests in the hands of our government.”

“For the consumer who unfortunately looks unlikely to get any assistance from government any time soon, the advice is to shop around and be on the lookout for potential ways to lower your monthly spend. Breaking the habit of just going to the same garage every time and actually taking a few seconds to compare prices could help you save a small amount on each re-fill which will add up over the course of the year.”
