Both Dealgan and Clann Naofa Boxing Club’s were celebrating European success over the weekend as three local boxers came back from Hungary with medals.

Dealgan’s Amy Broadhurst boxing in her final competition as a youth was crowned featherweight champion of Europe as the 2015 EUBC Women’s Youth and Junior championships came to a close at the SportHall in Keszthely, Hungary on Saturday.

Amy’s club team-mate Orla Garvey and Shauna O’Callaghan of Clann Naofa both came home with silver medals having just come up short against Russian opponents in the Junior feather and lightweight classes.

By Eunan Whyte Traditional musicians from Dundalk are celebrating another successful trip to Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann after returning from Sligo with a number of top prizes.

As always the Comhaltas Craobh Dhún Dealgan was well represented at the annual event and their performances were rewarded with success for James White, Fionnuala Donlon and Sárán Mulligan.

It was also a memorable few days for long-serving member, Brendan Gaughran, who was honoured with a lifetime service award.

James White cemented his place as one of the top young musicians in the country as he claimed a third successive All-Ireland crown, this time in the 12 to 15 years piano accordion category.

Local group joins national water campaign

A banner drop took place last Friday over the Castletown Bridge in a co-ordinated international show of solidarity against water charges.

Banners Over Bridges (BOB) protests were held across the country as well as internationally ahead of the Right 2 Water national demonstration in Dublin on Saturday August 29 .

A number of local campaigners gathered at the Castletown Bridge from 6am on Friday

morning with flags and banners outlining their opposition to the hugely unpopular water charges.

Gareth Weldon, a member of the Your Water campaign group said the protest was a novel way of advertising the upcoming national protest which takes place in Dublin on Saturday.

The Dundalk-Castleblayney road closed on Monday and will remain closed until November as a major road reconstruction takes place.

The complete closure of the road went ahead despite warnings from local businesses and residents that the move would put livelihoods at risk and cause chaos for local commuters.

Councillor Tomás Sharkey who opposed the road closure described the scenes yesterday morning as a crisis day for traffic and public safety in Co. Louth.

“Yesterday morning the N53 closed for three months and immediately there was utter chaos in local areas on the roads off the N53. There was a single car collision on the Ballinurd Road near Kilkerley first thing yesterday morning. Also there is no signage at Annavacky telling motorists that they cannot proceed which has led to vehicles ending up on Clonaleenan Lane which is not maintained by the council and is only suitable for agri vehicles and animals. The local roads will take so much abuse we will spend years and a small fortune trying to get them right again”,

warned Cllr Sharkey.

“Louth County Council claim that they have to completely close the roads for three months due to health and safety issues. The real reason for that length of time is a cost cutting measure of using the old road surface to backfill.”

Cllr Sharkey has called for an emergency meeting with Louth County Council. Meanwhile the council responded by saying that there were no plans to make any changes to the closure as advertised.

Traditional musicians from Dundalk are celebrating another successful trip to Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann after returning from Sligo with a number of top prizes.

As always the Comhaltas Craobh Dhún Dealgan was well represented at the annual event and their performances were rewarded with success for James White, Fionnuala Donlon and Sárán Mulligan.

It was also a memorable few days for long-serving member, Brendan Gaughran, who was honoured with a lifetime service award.

James White cemented his place as one of the top young musicians in the country as he claimed a third successive All-Ireland

crown, this time in the 12 to 15 years piano accordion category.

In 2013 James won the U-12 piano accordion competition in Derry and last year in Sligo he won the 12 to 15 title, which he successfully retained.

There was also success for Fionnuala Donlon who finished second in the 15 to 18 Harp.

Meanwhile, Sárán Mulligan came in third in the 15 to 18 Concertina category, having won the 12 to 15 event last year.

According to PRO of the local branch, Padraig Donlon, it was a fitting reward for the local members who frequently take part in the local classes and events.

However, one of the highlights was the recognition of Brendan Gaughran’s contribution to the movement

over the last 50 years.

“There were eight people from all over the country honoured at the Bardic awards night and Brendan was recognised for his lifetime of dedication to Comhaltas.

“He has been involved since 1958 to the present in Dundalk and South Armagh, and is currently Honourary President of CCE Dundalk. He has also worked as Reachtaire (Co-ordinator) at the head office and was

the driving force in the Dundalk-based Siamsa Ceili Band in the 1970s”, explained Padraig.

Brendan, a piano player, is a music teacher and adjudicator at Fleadhanna Cheoil for many years.

Music classes for the new season are starting soon with enrolment on Monday September 7 at the Oriel Cente (Dundalk Gaol) at 7pm.

New members are encouraged to come along.

Rafferty impresses at Irish Close event Caolan Rafferty produced another excellent performance in one of Irish amateur golf’s major championships last week when he reached the quarter-finals of the Irish Close at Tramore.

Having reached the semifinals of the North of Ireland Championship last month and captured the Club Championship in Dundalk for the first time, Rafferty travelled, along with club colleague Aaron Grant, to the Waterford venue with every right to feel confident.

Both Dundalk players qualified comfortably for the

matchplay stage with Rafferty shooting rounds of 76 and 72 for 148 while Grant was a shot further back after rounds of 76 and 73.

Grant lost out in the first round with Rafferty defeated at the quarter-final stage.

Paul Mathews (10), who plays out of Tipperary club Slievenamon, won the Intermediate Scratch Cup by two shots from David Lynch (11) with Martin Crosbie (11) edged into third on countback. Mark Cumisky (11) and Seapoint’s Paul McGrory finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Michael Kelly (13) won the Nett Prize with a round of 67 with Kieran Reidy (16) a shot further back in second.

Members interested in playing in the Irish PGA Championship Pro-Am on Wednesday, September 31, should contact the PGA Office. Each team consists of one professional and three amateurs and members can still enter a complete team or enter on an individual basis.

Last Sunday’s PGA Tankard competition was postponed due to the inclement weather and will be rescheduled for another date.

Adams raises BCG Vaccine concerns with Minister

Sinn Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams has expressed his “serious concern at the failure of the Department of Health to make adequate provision for a supply of the BCG vaccine which provides effective protection against tuberculosis (TB).”

The Louth TD raised this issue with the Minister after Louth County Councillor Jennifer Green who “is due to give birth in three weeks informed me that she had been told that her baby would not be getting the BCG shortly after birth, as recommended by the HSE. Councillor Green and other expectant mothers she has spoken to is worried by this.”

In a Parliamentary Question response to the Louth TD the Minister for Health Leo Varadkar detailed difficulties that have arisen with the Danish supplier for the vaccine for the HSE. According to the Minister the supplier “has been supplying BCG vaccine with significant delays due to issues in their production. The last shipment of BCG vaccine due to arrive at the end of October 2014 arrived at the end of December 2014.

The delay in delivery meant that two months shelf life was lost and this expired at the end of April 2015. The HSE had sufficient BCG vaccine in Ireland until it

expired at the end of April 2015.”

The Minister also revealed that “delivery of BCG vaccine produced in 2014 was suspended pending an extensive investigation regarding possible problems with the capping of the vials.”

This issue has now been resolved but this has added to the delay in production of new batches of the vaccine.

The conclusion of all of this, according to Minister Varadkar, is “that production of new product will not commence until August 2015 and due to a lengthy analysis and release procedure, vaccine from this production will not become

available until the end of 2015 or beginning of 2016.

Gerry Adams said: “The difficulties in supply of the BCG vaccine have been known by the Department of Health since last year.

Despite this it has failed to identify an alternative supplier to provide vaccine in the short term until the Danish company sorts issues in their production.

“As a result at least 50,000 babies, and potentially many more, will not receive their BCG when appropriate.

This is a matter of real concern given the dangers posed to humans from TB”, stated Mr Adams.

Sunday last saw Cuchulainn Cycling Club host the Louth Road Race Championships for both men and women. Despite the atrocious weather a good turn saw the riders start at Oriel Park, head to Carrickmacross, across to Ardee on to the links road, past Dorian`s pub and into the finish at the Fane Bridge some 60km later.

In the men’s event the racing was aggressive from the start with Gerry McCabe the first to put in a meaning full attack and his lead grew to over a minute at one stage. However reluctant to give a strong rider such an advantage the main bunch began to up the tempo and eventually Mc-

Cabe was brought back just after Carrick. The racing to Ardee saw attack after attack, with the bunch slowly but surely being whittled down until finally a select group emerged.

On the run in from Castllebellingham a fast pace ensured that the race would come down to a sprint and with 500m Karl Dolan was the first to make a bid for glory. However Dromin’s Gary Gorman was the quickest to react and put in a blistering acceleration that saw him pull clear of everyone else and take the win ahead of Richie McMullen or Ardee and Dundalk’s Alan Bingham in third.

Senior rugby debut DUNDALK Rugby Club made their first appearance as a senior team when they recorded a 10-10 draw with Seapoint in the Leinster Senior Shield.

The Mill Road side used the game to continue their preparations for the new season by introducing some new faces and trying out players in

different positions.

Against a team in a higher league, Dundalk competed well under new coach, John Murphy and deserved a share of the spoils in the end.

The next game is on Saturday of next week in Wanderers on Merrion Rd, in Dublin, with kick-off time yet to be confirmed.

Stokes put in a huge display to simply ride away from her opponents and take the chequered flag in a solo victory. The silver county medal went to Ardee’s Johanna Rogan and Dundalk’s Jan Conlon in third. Jan’s bronze medal went with her gold medal she won earlier in the week at the Leinster Hill Climb Championships, also promoted by Cuchulainn.

Here Linda Stokes was also to the fore taking the silver with Rosemary Gibson taking the bronze. The men’s title went to Meath’s Chris Reilly ahead of Cuchulainn’s Ray O`Shaughnessey and Tomas McCabe in 3rd. The junior title was won by Cuchulainn’s David Finnegan.

Talk on Mary Stoddart The much-awaited Blackrock Tidy Towns Heritage Week talk on the sinking of the “Mary Stoddart” takes place this Thursday evening.

Local historian and author Noel Sharkey will talk about the disaster in Dundalk Bay in April 1858 when 11 men lost their lives.

Two plaques will be unveiled in the village

on the night - one at the site of the house where local man James Crosbey died after being brought ashore following a rescue attempt, and a second marking the location of the first Blackrock Lifeboat station which was established in response to the disaster. The talk takes place at the Sundial at 7pm. Admission is free.

Dundalk Youth Centre played host to a group of Italian students last week in an exchange programme which saw Irish and Italian teenagers join up for a packed week of learning and fun.

The Sardinian students arrived for a ten day visit to Dundalk with their group leader Enrica Lallai and spent their days learning English in the Outcomers building in Roden Place before crossing the road to the Youth Centre where they took part in a project to build a greenhouse made out of recycled objects.

John Connolly who designed the project said the students used plastic bottles, bamboo shoots and timber frame to create a greenhouse which was proudly displayed in the Youth Centre’s back garden.

Development Perspective said the trip had been beneficial for both the Italians and the Irish teenagers and hoped it would become a regular occurrence.

“We’ve enjoyed having Enrica and all the Italian students over this last week or so and they

seem to have enjoyed themselves and especially enjoyed bringing John Connolly’s recycled greenhouse design to life. Hopefully they will be back again at some point in the future”, stated Gareth.

DkIT try to entice Northern students

DkIT have made almost twice as many CAO offers to Northern students this year following a decision by the board of management to make the scoring system in the North more equitable.

DkIT revealed that 97 offers were made to Northern Irish students last week which was almost double the number who were offered places last year.

The move by DkIT was a

response to changes to the scoring of A-Levels introduced by higher education institutions in the Republic in 2010 awarded a maximum of 150 points per A-Level. As most students in Northern Ireland only did three A-Levels this meant that the maximum number of points they could achieve would be 450 which doesn’t compare favourably to students in the south who can potentially get 625 points since the maths bonus system was introduced.

According to DkIT president Denis Cummins the college moved to change the scoring system to make the system more equitable for students.

“We felt that the system wasn’t very advantageous for Northern students looking to study down here so we decided to make it easier for school leavers from the north to gain entry by increasing the points gained for an A grade to 180 from 150.

“The vast majority of stu-

dents in the north take three A levels so this will bring their final points tally much closer in line with the system down here. We have secondary schools just up the road like Bessbrook in Armagh and we would get very few of their students coming down here so hopefully this initiative can change that”, stated Denis.

Great week of action at Peninsula Cup

A fantastic festival of football was enjoyed over the weekend with the hosting of the third annual Peninsula Cup by Bellurgan United.

Thirty-two schoolboy teams from all over Ireland converged on Flynn Park Bellurgan to compete at 4 different age groups, u11, u12, u13 and u14. There was Malahide United, Lexlip United, Kells United, Shelbourne, Park Villa (Navan), Dundalk FC, Elite Soccer Academy from Belfast, Windmill Stars from Newry and Warrenpoint Town, Rock Celtic and of course Bellurgan Utd, to

mention but a few.

Saturday saw the hosting of the u11 and the u13 competition with Belvedere FC winning the u11 Cup and Malahide United winning the u13 Cup. The performance of Belvedere in the u11 competition stood out in particular with their 7 a side team giving perhaps the performance of the weekend in a fine display of technical football with particular emphasis on passing, movement and ball control.

While most of the silverware over the weekend went to teams from outside the area it was very pleasing to see the under 13

Quinn stood out with a classy performance of dribbling, passing and goal scoring.

Sunday’s tournament involved the u12 and u14 teams. The under 12 cup went to Navan side Park Villa who beat Malahide United in the most exciting final of the weekend. 2 -2 at full time, 3 -3 after extra time with Villa wing 4-3 on penalties.

In the under 14 Cup a keenly contested final between Malahide and Lexlip saw Lexlip come out 1

in peace and reconciliation initiatives and this is part of bringing students north and south of the border together, “I would imaging that places like Sligo and Letterkenny Institutes of Technology are also looking at altering their scoring system given their closeness to the Border. Hopefully the next number of years will see a gradual increase of students from Northern Ireland choosing colleges in the South to do their studies”, added the DkIT president.

SOSAD’s 5K and Duck Race to raise much-needed funds

- By Eunan Whyte yThe local branch of eSOSAD (Save Our Sons rand Daughters) is set for ra busy start to Septem-ber with a number of sevents planned to mark Suicide Prevention -Week. e Among the planned ,events are a 5K fundraiser on Monday September 7, while to coincide with National Suicide Prevention Day a Mass will be held in the Redeemer Church on Thursday September 10.

To round-off what promises to be a hectic few days for the organisation, the annual Duck Race will be held on Sunday on the Castletown River.

Ciara Sloan, Team Co-Ordinator, at SOSAD Dundalk, revealed that funds raised from the events will help maintain the services currently on offer and is optimistic that local people will continue to show their support.

A Memorial Mass for those who have died by suicide will take place in the Church of the Holy Redeemer on Thursday September 10 at 7.30pm to mark World Suicide Prevention Day. It is a time to remember all those who have died by suicide and console their families. Everyone is invited to place a token, photo or memento of their loved one in the sacred space on the Altar for the duration of the Mass.

Kilkerley Four Mile The annual Kilkerley 4 mile run takes place on Friday August 28 at 7pm .

The run as usual will start and finish at the Community Centre close to the school and Church .

Registration will take place in the Community Centre from 5pm .

This is a chipped time event and will cater for both runners and fun runners / walkers .

Refreshments afterwards and prizes for both men and women.

Bishop Family Fundraiser Members of the Bishop family at The Margaret and Mary Bishop Memorial Fundraiser on Saturday August 22 at Dundalk Stadium. Proceeds from the event are going to the Maria Goretti Foundation Centre, Lordship.

A NUMBER of volunteers from Cox’s Demesne have been working tirelessly for the past month organising a free family fun day for residents of the area. On Saturday 29th of August the Redeemer Family Resource Centre will be transformed, with activities including Bucking Bronco contests, bouncy castles, games, food and music from local band The Long Riders.

There will also be prizes for fancy dress on the day.

The fun day is an opportunity for children and parents to get together and build on the strong community spirit already in Cox’s Demesne.

The volunteers are hoping that by having a successful event and bringing the community together like this, more people will come forward to help out in the community for future events and projects.

Charlie O’Brien, one of the volunteers helping to organise the day, has been volunteering in Cox’s Demesne for over 20 years and is hoping that the fun day will encourage more locals to get involved and help out in their estate.

He said that he gets great pleasure from helping people and would like to see the community getting together and being able to achieve things that were never achieved before in Cox’s.

The fun day will be completely free of charge thanks to support from Louth County Council.

The group would love to see more people getting involved on the day. Anyone that would like to lend a hand for a few hours can call or text Kayleigh on 0860431379.

Dundalk Bridge Club will be open to non-members during September. The Bridge Club which is located on the Ramparts Road beside the tennis club will hold their bridge nights on a Tuesday and a Thursday at 7:20pm.

Stags Head Fundraiser

The Stags Head Supporters Club of Dundalk FC and Celtic FC are holding a fun day with all proceeds in aid of the North East Hospice and the Irish Motor Neuron Disease. It all starts off with a challenge football match for the Billy McKee Perpetual Shield between Dundalk FC supporters club and Sean McIlvenna’s Celtic supporters club. The match kicks off at 4pm on Saturday September 19 at the DKIT Sports Arena. Later there will be an auction and raffle plus music and refreshments in the Stags Head, Linenhall St, Dundalk at 9pm. Tickets which include both events are paired at €5 and are available from any club member or behind the bar in the Stags Head. All donations for the raffle or auction are welcome.

he town centre’s newest business is up and running with the opening of Keltic Keys at the Demesne Shopping Centre.

The locksmiths and shoe repair service, which is a welcome addition to Dundalk, is owned and run by

Pairic Browne.

Keltic Keys will be offering a number of services including key-cutting, safes fitted and supplied, locks, and car key programming along with shoe repair for ladies and gents.

Pairic explains that he will also be offering a 24-hour

call out service and promises that if he hasn’t a particular item in stock, it can be ordered in.

Pairic is delighted to be returning to a trade where he started his working career and one that is very much a family tradition.

“When I left school I start-

ed working in the key cutting shop which was owned by my uncle, and in fact it was only a few doors down from where I am now.

“I was out of the trade for a bit but it is something that I wanted to get back into and at the beginning of this year I started working on

plans to open a shop”, he explained.

“There is always a demand for this type of service and I am glad to have the shop open and I will do my best to provide a quality service.

“It is great to see other shops opening in the Demesne Shopping Centre and

is a sign that things are improving, so hopefully that will continue for everyone”, continued Pairic.

Great entertainment continues at the Spirit Store The great entertainment continues in the Spirit Store this week commencing tonight, Wednesday August 26, with La Quincaillerie downstairs free.

NEW C-CLASS COUPE

The new Mercedes Benz C-Class Coupe is set to arrive in the New Year to take on the BMW 4 Series.

It pretty much follows the spec of C-Class saloon although it 15mm lower, 95mm longer and 40mm wider and is some 60mm longer than its predecessor.

There will be a number of features that are unique to the Coupe including colour schemes and sports seats.

Power will come at launch from a choice of four petrol engines, C180 1.6-litre 156 hp, C200 2.0-litre 184 hp, C250 2.0-litre 211 hp and a C300 2.0-litre 245 hp. And two diesel models sharing a 2.1-litre unit with two power outputs, C220 170 hp or a C250 204hp.

There will be the option of AIRMATIC air suspension to replace the steel springs, with the option of

"ECO", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport +" and "Individual" driver selectable settings.

Other option highlights include Active Parking Assist, 360 surround vision, Camera and navigationbased Traffic Sign Assist and Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus – that will allow you to stay on full-beam without dazzling on-coming traffic by masking out your beam.

NEW CHEROKEE DIESEL NEW SUBARU LEVORG

The Jeep Cherokee is now available with 2.2-litre MultiJet Diesel engine, with option of two power outputs 185 hp or 200 hp. It replaces the 2.0-litre 170 hp auto Diesel engine and joins the 2.0-litre 140 hp manual edition in the current Cherokee line-up.

The 2.2-litre MultiJet Diesel engine is mated to Jeep’s ninespeed automatic transmission with Active-Drive I fourwheel-drive; the 200 hp can be specified with Active-Drive II. The Active-Drive I allows the rear-axle to disconnect under normal road conditions effectively making it front-wheeldrive until four-wheel-drive is needed – the Active-Drive II adds a two-speed power transfer unit, with both low and high range ratios for more demanding off-road use.

The 200 hp engine is only available on the Limited editions where the lower output engine is only available on the Longitude and Longitude+ models.

The 185 hp 2.2-litre MultiJet Diesel with Active Drive I

has a top speed of 125 mph, with 0-62 mph in 8.8 seconds – emissions are 150 g/km with a combined fuel figure of 49.5 mpg.

The 200 hp Active Drive I model can reach 127 mph with 0-62 mph taking 8.5 seconds with NEDC figures indicating 49.6 mpg on the combined cycle with emissions of 160 g/ km – with Active Drive II this changes to 126 mph, 0-62 mph in 8.7 seconds, and combined fuel consumption of 46.3 mpg, with 160 g/km of CO2 emissions.

Standard equipment across the range now includes electric tailgate, windscreen wip-

ers with rain sensor, dusk sensor, eight-position electrically adjustable seat, four-position lumbar adjustment and automatic dipping rear-view mirror.

Options on the 2.2-litre Limited editions include the option of the 'Technology Group' pack comprising Advanced Brake Assist, Lane Departure Warning Plus, Smartbeam automatic main beam dipping function, Full Speed Forward Collision Warning Plus, Adaptive Cruise Control, as well as Start&Stop, mirror with Blind-Spot Monitoring function, and a rear parallel parking assist system.

Details of the new Subaru Levorg Sports Tourer have been announced, following on from its Japanese launch.

The Levorg is the replacement for the Legacy Tourer model, it is available in one trim (GT spec) – one engine (a 1.6-litre Direct Injection Turbo Boxer petrol engine) and will feature Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system.

Although smaller there is more room than the Legacy Tourer with improved leg, head and shoulder room. The boot can accommodate 522 litres of cargo with the seats up, which increases to 1,446 litres with the rear seats down.

The 1.6-litre DIT unit is mated to Subaru’s Lineartronic (CVT) transmission; there is no diesel or manual options at launch. The new four cylinder engine produces as much power as Subaru’s 2.5 aspirated Boxer unit outputting 170 PS with 250 Nm of torque on tap. Performance figures see a 0-62 mph time of 8.9 seconds whilst returning 40 mpg on

the combined cycle with emissions of 164 g/km.

You can select steering response via SI Drive (Subaru Intelligent Drive) which offers two modes, Intelligent mode and Sport mode. It also comes with Active Torque Vectoring (ATV) that brakes the inside wheels under cornering allowing greater torque to the outside of the car, which in turn reduces understeer and oversteer to improve cornering safety and performance.

Standard safety equipment includes Subaru Rear Vehicle

Detection’ system (SRVD), that includes Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, which detects vehicles passing behind when reversing out of a parking space.
