They say action speaks louder than words and amidst all the talk of climate change and saving the planet a couple of students from St Louis have taken matters into their own hands by organising two separate clean-ups in their communities.

Sixteen-year old Emma Lynch and 15year old Lauren Boyle are both passionate about the environment and are leading by example in their respective communities in their attempts to combat pollution.

Emma from the Mill Road in Dundalk has recruited her nine-year

old sister Sophie to help tackle the issue of littering in her area and the duo can regularly be seen out and about with a litter pick, gloves and black bin bags as they clean up the streets beside their home.

Meanwhile fifteen-year old student Lauren Boyle who has just completed her Junior Cert is busy recruiting helpers for a massive ‘Ocean Clean Up’ on Annagassan beach which will take place on July 6th between 11am and 2am. Lauren took it upon herself to print out posters and advertise her campaign and she is hopeful that she will have a small army of volunteers to help clean up the beach early next month.

Inaugural Paddy Cheshire 5K run

Sean O’Mahonys GFC are hosting the inaugural Paddy Cheshire Memorial 5K at 7pm on Saturday June 29, preceded by the Juvenile Sponsored Walk down the Navy bank at 4.30.

There is a medal and goodie bag for kids who return a sponsorship card plus face painting and refreshments back at the clubhouse. Any parents of kids yet to receive a sponsorship card please contact a member of the committee, for those not around on Saturday, sponsored cards can be returned on Wednesday or Thursday evening in the Clubhouse.

There will be a Race Registeration & Race Number collection evening in the Clubhouse next Thurday from 6pm to 8pm. Anybody who wants to run, jog or walk the 5k, whether for a personal best or with friends in their own time, please register online, or on Thursday evening, it's only €15 and you will receive a beautiful medal.

Lauren doing her bit for the environment

A third-year student in St Louis has taken it upon herself to do something about the litter and plastic which are spoiling Annagassan beach by organising a mass clean up on July 6.

Lauren Boyle who has just finished her Junior Cert was inspired to do something to help keep her local beach clean after seeing a programme on television which spoke about the

dangers of plastics which are thrown away and end up in our oceans.

“I was sitting at home on a Sunday afternoon and I saw this programme about the damage plastic was doing to our environment and it was really eye-opening for me. Not only are these dumped plastics bad for the environment but they are also harmful to fish and other creatures who live in the sea. The problem is getting out of hand and after the programme fin-

ished I basically decided there and then to try and do something locally to help.

“I went into class the next day and I asked the teacher if they would be able to put up a notice on the schools instagram and facebook pages to advertise a clean up on Annagassan beach. I also made up a poster asking for volunteers and to give some information about the clean-up. I’ve had a good response already and even some of the teachers in

Two young sisters have began doing frequent litter picks in their community to try and do their bit to tackle the growing issue of pollution. Sixteen-year old St Louis student Emma Lynch lives on the Mill Road in Dundalk close to the rugby pitch and was dismayed at the levels of littering on the streets. The proximity of Mill Road to two local schools means that littering is especially bad in that area and last week Emma decided she would take matters into her own hands.

Louth Library Summer Stars Louth Library service will run the Summer Stars reading programme for children in all library branches during the summer holidays from June 18 to the end of August .

“I’m calling it the ‘Big Ocean Clean Up’ and I’m having it on July 6 between 11am and 2pm on Annagassan beach. Everybody is welcome to come and help out and I would advise they bring old clothes, gardening gloves and maybe a flask of tea! The only way for us to change is by acting now and by doing something and not just talking about it,” stated Lauren.

This free reading adventure encourages children to read over their summer holidays , to enjoy the fun and pleasure of reading ,and participate in the related events and activities at their local library .

Summer stars is a completely free programme and open to all children.

Each child simply keeps a record of the books they read on their reading card and gets recognition and encouragement along the way.

At the end of the programme, all children who participated will receive their own certificate of achievement at a special awards event .

Access to books and reading for pleasure is known to have many long term benefits.

Initially Emma began walking down the road picking up any litter that she came across but when she realised the scale of the problem she contacted Louth County Council who provided her with a litter pick and some black plastic bags.

Emma’s nine-year-old sister Sophie began getting curious when she saw her elder sister doing her litter picking rounds and began to ask questions about Emma’s new pastime. According to Emma it didn’t take long for her sister to get on board with the campaign.

“I explained to Sophie about the importance of keeping our streets clean and how much damage pollution is causing to our environment and she immediately said she wanted to help out. The two of us go out regularly now and pick up rubbish and put it in bags. I am very passionate about protecting our environment and I would love if the state of some of the streets in Dundalk could be brought to the attention of the county council and the general public to encourage them to make some effort to tackle the growing issue of

pollution,” stated Emma.

“The education system should be doing more I feel as this is an issue which is going to affect all our futures. I am a member of the Green Team in the Louis and I really enjoy it but I feel we could and should be devoting more time into education young people about the importance of looking after our planet.”

“Myself and Sophie only started this recently but we intend to keep on doing it throughout the summer and into winter to ensure our roads are kept clean,” she added.

Stabannon Parnells hold GAA sticker album launch Stabannon Parnells GFC successfully launched their Sticker Album for 2019 on Sunday June 9. The new and innovative fundraiser showcased the club’s teams from Academy through to Senior Men’s and Ladies.

The weather didn’t dampen spirits and a community family fun day was enjoyed by all, with the presentation of the complementary Sticker Album the main order of events.

The club and parish were waiting in anticipation since the initial photo-shoots for the album and the final product did not disappoint.

Everyone was both surprised and delighted with both the quality and detail contained within the sticker album.

The children were excited to get their hands on the sticker album, which are personalised to each

Stabannon Parnells GFC are the first GAA club to launch the sticker album and have worked with a specialised Spanish Company called Cromogal who produce all the sticker albums and stickers

for the club. The club didn’t require any money upfront for the fundraiser and were able to make money through sponsorship and selling of stickers.

Cromogal cover the cost of photography, printing and shipping.

The sticker album has created a buzz around the club and parish and children and adults alike are enjoying the collecting and swapping of the stickers. The al-

bum is solidifying and generating new bonds between club members and it is hoped the project will make treasured memories for years to come.

This is a novel and fun way to fundraise for a club and if any other GAA clubs or other sporting organisations out there want any information please contact Stabannon Parnells GFC and they will be only too happy to help.

Dundalk Credit Union, Louth GAA and Louth Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) announced the launch of the Louth Peer Education Programme on Tuesday June 18, to a packed audience at Louth GAA Centre of Excellence, Darver.

The Louth Peer Education Programme will deliver a comprehensive peer-to-peer substance use education programme to young people in all secondary schools in Louth, commencing in October 2019.

The Louth Peer Education Programme will empower young people to be more informed about the harmful effects of substance use and will enhance their ability to make informed and healthy choices. the Programme will be delivered by IE Programmes, on behalf of the North Eastern Regional Drug & Alcohol Task Force.

Running in all secondary schools in Louth, this innovative programme will see a number of TY or Fifth Year students in each school receive specialised training between October and December 2019. On completion of this training, the Peer Educators liaise with their SPHE teachers, and schedule delivery of four SPHE Substance Use classes to First Years in their respective schools and to 6th Class pupils of

feeder primary schools where possible from January to June 2020.

The classes will cover several related topics including self-esteem, peer pressure, smoking, alcohol, drug information and education.

The programme is jointly funded by Dundalk Credit Union, Louth GAA and Louth LCDC (Local Community Development Committee), and is being coordinated by Andy Ogle, Regional Co-ordi-

nator for the North East Drugs & Alcohol Task Force. Funding for this program had previously been available from both the NE-RDATF and HSE budgets, but this was constrained in recent years.

Dundalk Credit Union has been instrumental in re-igniting the programme, providing support through its Community Support Fund, and worked with its community partners, Louth GAA, and Louth

LCDC, to support the delivery of this hugely important program to the secondary school students of Co. Louth.

Local company, Myhomecar.ie held an eight-hour charity ‘Spinathon’ in the Marshes Shopping Centre Dundalk on Friday May 31 to raise funds for Capuchin Day Centre in Dublin city centre for homelessness..

Staff took turns on an exercise bike as part of the ‘Cycle for Br Kevin’ initiative that was sponsored to them for the day by DkIT Sport.

Myhomecare.ie held fundraisers nationwide throughout their offices in Dublin, Cork and Galway and so far, they have raised almost €5,000. All funds are going directly towards the Capuchin Centre.

Originally from Belmullet in Co. Mayo, Myhomecare.ie CEO Declan Murphy has sponsored and taken part in this charity event since 2016. Also taking part in this year’s cycle was

his brother-in-law James Hynes.

Founded by Brother Kevin Crowley, the Capuchin Centre is run by the Irish Capuchin Franciscan Order. Starting off almost 50 years ago, serving soup and sandwiches to around 50 people, it has since become the biggest food centre in Ireland providing clothes, medical, hygiene and social services to those in need. Around 300 breakfasts, 600 dinners and 1,700 food parcels are provided to men, women and children each day. The centre costs €4m to run annually and would be impossible to continue without fundraising.

A local student with a talent for the written word is celebrating after claiming top prize in a travel-writing competition. Éadaoin Drumgoole, a 13-year-old student at St Louis, scooped first place in the Junior section of the Secondary School category with her piece entitled, ‘Czech it out”.

As a result, Éadaoin won a Chromebook and a €100 Amazon voucher along with the Immrama Travel Writing trophy.

Close to 500 entries were received from schools across Ireland for this year’s Immrama School’s Travel Writers Competition.

For 2019, the competition was opened up to Primary schools and also for the first time Éadaoin Drumgoole in Prague ever included schools in all 32 counties. Students ages ranged from 10 to 18 and the quality and standard of this year’s entries was exceptional.

Family of murdered Seamus Marist honoured for Ludlow attend leaflet launch use of Irish language The family of a man shot dead by loyalists in 1976 held a leaflet launch in the square, Dundalk last Saturday morning. The leaflet gave a detailed account of Seamus’s death and outlined how the 47-year old bachelor was murdered by a loyalist gang when returning home from a pub in Dundalk.

A large number of supporters, family members and elected representatives gathered at the square for the leaflet launch including former Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams who spoke out at the lack of justice which has been thus far afforded to Seamus’s family.

“For 43 years the family of Seamus Ludlow have faced a wall of silence and misinformation in their quest to get to the truth of the circumstances surrounding his murder,” explained Deputy Adams.

“In 1979 the RUC notified Gardaí of four suspects it believed were responsible for the killing.

Shockingly the Gardaí failed to act on this in-

21 years later in 1998, the four were arrested by the RUC. Two confessed to killing Seamus during interviews. They were released without charge and later that year the North’s Director of Public Prosecutions declined to take them to court. Among the four men were two serving officers in the Ulster Defence Regiment.

“In March 2006 the final report of the Independent Commission of Inquiry into the Mur-

der of Seamus Ludlow (Barron Report) was published by the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Equality, Defence & Women’s Rights.

“The Commission accused the Gardaí of having treated the family in “an appalling manner.”

And it recommended that the Government establish two Commissions of Investigation regarding Seamus Ludlow’s murder.

“In the intervening years successive Irish Governments have re-

fused to establish these Commissions. This is unacceptable. In the coming weeks I will bring a motion to the Dáil calling for the immediate establishment of the two Commissions of Investigation recommended by Justice Barron. Sinn Féin has written to every TD asking them to co-sign this motion and to support it when it is introduced.

The Ludlow family have also written to all TDs requesting their support,” stated the Louth TD.

St. Mary’s College has been awarded the esteemed “Gaelbhratach” status for the fourth year in a row in recognition of its excellence in the promotion of and the use of the Irish language in the school community.

It was awarded the special status at a ceremony at the Pavilion, Leopardstown Racecourse recently. Ciara Ní E and Eoghan Ó Loideáin hosted the event. The band “Scannal” provided a concert for the participants.

The Gaelbhratach scheme aims to encourage the use of and create greater awareness of the Irish language. The Gaelbhratach committee in the school, which has representatives from the various year groups, had a busy year helping to organise many activities to promote the language

Success for Garry’s Bohemians side at amputee tournament in Germany

Dundalk footballer Garry Hoey enjoyed a weekend to remember alongside his Bohemians teammates as the Dublin club were crowned champions at the Fußballiade 2019 amputee football tournament in Landshut Germany.

Bohs were convincing winners scoring 19 goals in their ten matches while amazingly keeping a clean sheet in every game with Garry marshalling the defence at centre back. The Dundalk man also did his bit at the other end of the pitch by scoring the crucial second goal in the final

against old foes Shamrock Rovers.

The group stage included three scoreless draws against Rovers and wins against Newcastle and Hoffenheim.

Goals in the final came from Garry Hoey and James Boyle as James Conroy kept another clean sheet at the other end.

According to Garry the experience of competing in and winning a European competition has given the whole team a huge boost.

“It was a really well run competition and we are all delighted with how it went. We went over there with one aim and that was to win it and thankfully we

managed to do it. We had ten tough games in two days including four against Shamrock Rovers and after three 0-0 draws against them we managed to beat them 2-0 in the final when it mattered.

“We’re actually a few points behind them in the national amputee league so this will give us a lot of confidence for the remainder of the season,” he explained.

“I’ve been at Bohs now for two seasons and I feel we have come on leaps and bounds since I started.

We all have a great understanding of what our jobs are on the pitch and the standard is improving all the time. At the

Sean O’Sullivan (18) took the Veteran’s Prize with a 73 nett while Malcolm Drake (15) won Category Two and Daniel Nordone (14) claimed the Juvenile Prize.

Caolan Rafferty finished sixth in qualifying for the Amateur Championship which took place last week at The Island and Portmarnock but he was knocked out in the last 32 of the matchplay by Finland’s Jonathan Jolkkonen.

There was disappointment on the inter-club front over the weekend as the Newsam Cup team lost to Knightsbrook while the North Leinster Mixed Foursomes team were beaten by Skerries. This weekend

sees Dundalk host the regional qualifiers in the Senior Cup with 11 clubs involved. The strokeplay round takes place on Saturday with Dundalk teeing off from 8am with the top four qualifiers meeting in the matchplay rounds on Sunday with the semifinals taking place from 8am and the final at 2.30pm. All support for our senior panel from club members would be greatly appreciated.

David Murden (10) won Wednesday’s Open Singles with an excellent score of 44pts which was six more than second place Dillon Green (7) while Paul Coburn (11) won the Saturday competition on countback after he tied with Maurice Murphy (3) on 36pts.

Open Week starts on July 1 with timesheets now open on the BRS System. Saturday, July 6 sees three Scratch Cups taking place with the Junior, Intermediate and Minor Cups all being decided over 18 holes. Entries for these cups are €10 for members and €25 for visitors and entries should be made through the Pro Shop on 042-9321731.

Meet the young entrepreneurs from Louth who will represent the North-East at the National Finals of Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur, Conor Kerley (31) of Setanta Nutrition Science from Dundalk and Orla Stafford (20) of Izmoo in Drogheda. Follow their progress on www.ibye.ie.

Local entrepreneurs head to national finals The team at the Local Enterprise Office Louth are celebrating after two of the county’s most dynamic entrepreneurs this week won the Regional Final of Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur. They will now advance to the National Finals in Google HQ on September 15th representing the North-East region.

The Best Business Idea category was won by 31 year old Conor Kerley of Setanta Nutrition Science. Conor, who hails from Dundalk, is a Doctor of Human Nutrition and Dietetics.

His revolutionary product com-

bines ancient wisdom with modern science to create wholefood plant-based supplements.

The supplement that Conor has developed lowers blood sugar, inflammation and fats like cholesterol, helping to prevent and treat multiple disorders such as diabetes. Conor’s product can help change the lives of millions of people around the world suffering from conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure etc.

Although he’s in the Best Idea Category, this idea has been moving along at a rapid pace.

The prototype has been developed. Conor start clinical trials this month and is in the process of applying for a patent. Once all those things are complete, he plans is to launch the product within the next nine to twelve months.

At the opposite end of the county, 20 year old Orla Stafford from Drogheda will represent the North East in the Best Start-Up Business category. Her store Izmoo in Lawrence Street Drogheda, Orla makes delicious Italian gelato in a range of flavours to please all ages and tastes.

Now in its ninth year the standard of darts never ceases to entertain those in attendance every year.

Last year saw PDC ranked player Kevin Burness take the title in a thrilling final against John Donnelly, who won the prize for highest checkout with a 152 finish.

The quality of thrower is evident in that since the first year it was run no player has either retained their title or won the competition twice.

The winners of the competition since it was first run is like a who’s who of darts in the North East and neighbouring counties.

Among the other previous winners is current Ireland ranked No 1 Keane Barry who won the competition four years ago when aged 12 and that year he beat Kieran O’Neill L who won the competition the previous year.

Ray Campbell also won the competition and has also been a familiar face on the darts circuit across the water.

Raymie Carroll was a very popular winner of the competition two years ago.

Paddy Kearney and Graham Unwin are previous winners who are always involved in the business end of the competition.

Louth represented at Camogie Feile This weekend saw the annual Spectacle of Feile na nGael which draws thousands of Under 14 players from across the country to take part in an intensive three days of Camogie matches. played at the highest level.

St Kevins from Philipstown travelled to Bandon in Cork where they were hosted in the homes of their host club.

St Kevins made it all the

way to the quarter final, beating Aughrim and Bandon but eventually lost out in a competitive quarter final to Four Roads, from Roscommon who eventually went on to win.

Separately, another Louth team made up of players from Blackrock, St Brides, and Cooley and calling themselves Louth Cuchulainns, attended a one day regional feile, which

was held in Fermanagh. They had some tough matches against Castlebar and Carnew but were pleased with their win against a Fermanagh county team The future of Louth Camogie is in secure hands as we can boast juvenile teams across the county as well as county U14, U16 and Minor teams. Forty-seven parents are celebrating their graduation after successfully completing the Incredible Years Parent Programme, at a special event at Dundalk Institute of Technology, where family and friends joined them.

The Genesis Programme oversees the delivery of the Incredible Years suite of programmes through the ABC (Area Based Childhood) Programme and the CLI (The Changing Lives Initiative) Programme.

Incredible Years Mentor who works with Archways, gave a keynote speech giving his unique perspective on the important role parents’ play.

Parents representing all those graduating from the five groups also spoke very emotively about the positive impact the programme has had on their families.

Members of the Dundalk ACT including representatives from the local schools, early years services, Community Groups, TUSLA and the

HSE joined the graduating parents in their celebrations.

Another notable presentation on the day was a special presentation to Annette MhicArdaíl, Principal at Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan, who is retiring at the end of this school year. Annette has been a key driver of the Incredible Years since the programme the introduction of the programme to the area in 2008.

Busy time for cycling club It has been a busy few weeks for the members of Dundalk’s Cuchulainn Cycling Club. Following on from the successful hosting of the annual Tour of Louth, the events have been coming thick and fast.

One of the more unique events was when the club entered the Donegal Ultra Challenge, a non-stop 550km race around the hills of County Donegal.

The club entered a fourman relay team consisting of Alan Grey, David Holland, Liam Dolan and Declan Rafferty. The team,

backed up by a strong support crew of six, completed the event in just under 17 hours to come home as fourth place team. David Holland did a very impressive stint when at 2am on a Saturday morning he tack-

led the treacherous Horn Head in the lashing rain.

Club members also tackled the recent Giants Causeway Sportif, a 185km route which also went over another demanding geographical

point at Torr Head, which was in part made up for with a ride through the infamous Game of Thrones` Dark Hedges. Here, as in the Donegal Challenge, it is the support crew that allows the cyclists to take

part, with Kevin McCreesh driving the club van for support behind the club’s riders.

The Bike Station summer league continues to gather pace with recent wins for Liam Dolan (Round 11), Martin Harvey (Round 10) and Donal Qunn (Round 9). As the league passes the half way stage it is Alan Gray who holds a lead, however defending champion Tomás McCabe of Ardee is closing in behind and is coming to top form, having recently won the Louth time Trial Championships.

Relatives hear of great exploits in Dundalk Gaol

Relatives of Sean Treacy and Frank Henderson at Dundalk Gaol

A very successful afternoon took place in Dundalk Gaol on Saturday June 8 to commemorate the famous prisoners who were resident there between 1916 and the Irish War of Independence.

Relatives travelled from every corner of the country to hear riveting stories about the exploits of the inmates.

A secret wedding, multiple prison escapes, Irish classes, elections, prison journals, military strategic planning and hunger strikes took place. The event was held by both the Louth Volunteers 1916 Relatives and The 1916

Relatives Association, whose Chairman Brian O’Neill was in attendance. It was fascinating to see the actual prison cells where names like Sean Treacy, Terence MacSwiney, Dick McKee, Austin Stack, Frank Henderson and Frank Thornton spent their days.

The prisoners had reported being looked after well by Dundalk’s Cumann na mBan who kept them supplied with generous food parcels and information. They used clever strategies to keep in contact with GHQ. Ryan O’Donnell provided an overview of events in the jail from one of its first inmates

who had built the gaol but ran out of money to its rebuilding and refurbishment. Cooley Girls are taking part in the Feile this weekend

Cooley heading west for Feile Cooley U14 girls are off to the West at the weekend, representing Louth in the 2019 Feile hosted this year in Connacht.

Over the May Bank Holiday weekend Louth LGFA held a competition to select the team to represent the county.

Cooley will play in Division 3 of Feile and are hosted by St Michaels GAA club in Galway city. To date the girls are enjoying a very successful league campaign.

Dundalk Cricket club open to new members

Cricket is a growing sport and efforts are being put Cricket is a sport on the rise throughout Ireland and Dundalk is no exception as the Dundalk Cricket Club has been running for the last five years and making sure the town and the counties of Louth, Monaghan and Cavan get to enjoy the sport.

This year the club saw the need to be more accessible to the town and moved its playing grounds to Hiney Park. It is located on the main Carrickmacross Road, behind Oriel Park The cricket team is run by local members who are always on the look-out for new members to join the club. The team participates in the Leinster Cricket League and enjoys competitive cricket. Needless to say players of all ages (minimum 13 years old) and skill sets are welcome to join the club.

The club is truly diverse in all ways and the senior players are always pitching in to help newer members. It is a friendly team environment where you enjoy a nice day out with like-minded cricket enthusiasts. All playing equipment is provided by the club and there is a good mix of home and away matches.

Irish Water, working in partnership with Louth County Council, has commenced works to replace ageing water mains on the Dublin Road in Dundalk.

The works involve the replacement of approximately 700 metres of ageing water mains with high density polyethylene (plastic) pipes.

These works are being carried out as part of Irish Water’s national Leakage Reduction Programme.

The section of works will take place along the Dublin Road between the junctions with the Old Golf Links Road and the Marlbog Road.

The works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply. Where the existing service connections on the public side are lead these will be replaced as part of this improvement work.

Once complete, the benefits of the project will include a more reliable water supply for all customers on the public water supply. The works will result in reduced leakage on the network. Operational and maintenance costs will also be reduced as the network operation will require less maintenance.

Irish Water has planned the works in short sections in order to limit impact on customers.

Works may involve some short-term water shut offs and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water shut offs. Traffic management will be in place over the course of the works. Local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times.
