David set to make history in Turkey Dundalk athlete David O’Hare is set to make history next month as he becomes the first ever Irish track athlete to take part in the Trisome Games.

The Trisome games is a global competition for athletes with Down Syndrome and will take place in Antalya, Turkey between March 31 and April 7.

The international event will gather 1000 athletes from 37 countries including talented 20-year-old sprinter David who hails from Dundalk. A gofundmepage was set up last month by David’s sister Victoria to try and raise €1500 to fund his trip to Turkey. That total Continued Page 2

However that fell through following the recent issues with the FAI and he ended up being asked to go over as an athlete.

Two men rescued by sub aqua Two men were rescued by the Dundalk Sub Aqua Unit on Saturday morning after getting stranded between Soldiers Point and the Shore Road.

Finbar Dillon who is a dive officer for the local Sub Aqua Unit was part of the team who rescued the two men who got into difficulty on Lord Limerick embankment as high tide approached.

“We got a call about 11am asking us to go out to Soldiers Point to assist in the rescue of two men. We sawthe two lads stranded surrounded by water and we brought the boat out as far as we could before making our way over to them. It was a very marshy area with high water all around and we managed to get them and bring them back to the other side of the bank where the coastguard and fire

services where waiting.

Thankfully the two boys were not injured but they did have hypothermia. I would appeal to anybody going out on the water to please let somebody know where they are going as it can be very dangerous out there and you can get caught out by high waters very quickly,” warned Finbar.

Meanwhile the search for missing man Oliver McCloskey is ongoing following his disappearance last Thursday evening.

The 67-year old hasn’t been seen since leaving his house in Faughart early on Thursday morning.

Gardaí have appealed for anybody with dash cam footage from the Inner Relief Road area between 6am and 7am to contact them. The Dundalk Sub

Holy Family Parish Dundalk During Lent The Parish Liturgy Group are proposing a series of Neighbourhood Masses. They will begin on Monday 2nd March during 10am Mass Monday – Friday.

Patsy Kelly 5K run to return for ninth year Dundalk Leader 26th February 2020

The ninth annual Patsy Kelly 5K run will once again take place this April and registration is now open for the event.

The race which begins in Ard Easmuinn before finishing at the Clans pitch on the Ecco Road will take place on Saturday April 4 at 6.30pm.

This year’s race will once again be sponsored by Flogas and as usual it is being or-

ganised by the North East Runners and Clan na Gael GFC. The race which is held in memory of former Clans groundsman Patsy Kelly is always a very competitive affair and attracts in the region of 900 runners each year.

The race is open to any level of athlete including those who prefer just to walk the course. According to Jim Gonnelly, one of the race organisers, the event is coming

to an end with next year’s renewal bringing an end to the run.

“We look forward to hosting the ninth annual Patsy Kelly race on April 4 and we’re hoping that it will prove as popular as previous years. The people of Dundalk and far beyond have supported this race ever since we first put it on back in 2012. Next year will be the tenth running of the race and we have decided that we are going to

stop after that one. I think we’ve probably taking it as far as we can and ten seems like a nice number to stop at,” revealed Jim. “We have had a total of 5906 runners in the eight years of the race so this year we will have a special prize for the 6000th runner to cross the line. There will also be medals for the first 800 finishers of the race as well as the Patsy Kelly Cup for the first over sixty runner to cross

the line.

T-shirts will be available for the first 800 people who register and I would advise anybody who wants a T-shirt that fits to register quickly to give us as much time as possible to order your size.

The closer you leave it to the race the less chance you have of getting a T-shirt that fits,” advised Jim. “Flogas are sponsoring us for the fourth year in a row and we’d like to thank

them for their continued support. We have had 13 people who have ran in all eight Patsy Kelly’s so I’m sure most of them will be determined to make it out this year and next so they can

say they competed in each of the ten. We will have a big registration day soon in town and hopefully people will come out and support us once more,” concluded Jim.

by Ruairi Ó Murchú when he was elected as TD. Kevin was nominated by the Duffy Downey Cumann in Dundalk at the convention held in the Redeemer on Thursday evening. It was uncontested.

Kevin said: “I am looking forward to working with the people of Dundalk South again and want to thank my Cumann for putting their faith in me and my family, as without their support I would not be able to do the

job at all.

“I’m delighted to be back and I can’t wait to get started at this stage.

I’ve kind of kept myself involved behind the scenes since I stepped down and I worked closely with Ruairí O Murchú during his election campaign as well as doing a lot of work with the youth centre in Muirhevnamor. It’s a tough but rewarding job and if anybody out there needs help contact me and I’ll do my best for you,” stated Kevin.

The formal co-option took place at the council offices on Monday evening.

The club card for children attending the Little Monsters kids club at Marshes Shopping Centre is now available.

Children can pick up their card and lanyard at the February kids club next Saturday from 12-4 at the food court.

They can use their card to claim rewards throughout the year.

There will be plenty of other fun

events at the February Little Monster kids club, including decoration of the dedicated Little Monsters Wall.

As well as a clay workshop, there will be bookmark making and face painting.

The free kids club runs on the last Saturday of each month at the food court, so you can bring your children for an afternoon full of exciting activities.

“Little Monsters kids club is a great opportunity for children to have a super time,” said Centre Manager Seán Farrell.

“We are looking forward to welcoming children and parents to receive their club card and claim rewards throughout the year.”

Students advised to apply for Combilift traineeship

Applications are now open for Combilift Engineering Traineeship with an Information Evening for applicants taking place on Wednesday March 4 at 7pm at Combilift, Annalagh, Monaghan.

With over 80% employment rate the traineeship offers a combination of work place learning with Combilift and classroom-based learning.

Students from across the region including many from Dundalk have enrolled in the course over the past five years.

Martin McVicar, Managing Director of Combilift says that the course is producing highly qualified and employable engineering graduates.

“As Combilift continues to grow and expand, there are career opportunities with us for graduates of this traineeship. The students who complete the traineeship get an excellent blend of practical training and knowledge on the course which means they are job ready. They develop practical skills, get practical experience and a national qualifi-

cation and have the opportunity to apply for a full-time job locally that will allow them travel the world. A number of past graduates are now working for Combilift both in Monaghan and around the world,” stated Martin.

The course content was designed by engineers at Combilift with a focus on engineering, electronics and hydraulics. There are no course fees and trainees are supported by a financial bursary from Combilift in addition to the provision of a tool kit for the duration of the course.

The Combilift Managing Director is advising young people to apply now for places on the traineeship.

“In the last number of years there has been

increased competition for places on the traineeship and we would encourage students who are finishing their studies or those seeking to change careers to apply now. Information on the course will be available on the night and applicants will have the opportunity to meet with course tutors, past and current trainees and have all their questions answered. Anticlockwise Exhibition at An Táin Arts Centre Dundalk Youth Centre and Anticlockwise project co-ordinator Kwasie Boyce hosted an exhibition to the main stage of the An Táin Arts Centre to highlight the work of the PEACE IV funded Anticlockwise programme last Wednesday evening.

A total of 180 young people from Louth worked with a group of artists over a number of months to explore peace, conflict and

resolution through the various art forms. The participants also received peace training during this phase.

This explorative process had some great outcomes and young people shared their work and experiences on the main stage in the An Táin Arts Centre.

The exhibition included a short video montage from some of the programmes, visual arts, theatre

performances and live music.

“This is a celebration of the young people’s accomplishment and bringing communities together. I have witnessed the growth of the young people throughout this process, starting from a place of uncertainty and feeling challenged, growing to a place where they have a voice and expressing this voice through art,” explained Kwa-

sie.

“This is not a quick fix but an ongoing process to understand conflict and promoting peace and using your creativity is a great place to start,” he added.

The Anticlockwise Programme is part of Louth County Council’s €3.1m Local Authority Action Plan.

This action plan has received funding from the EU’s PEACEIV Programme.

Miriam’s ‘Dear Dundalk’ exhibition opens in library

d y n lLocal artist Miriam Fox launched ,her very first exhibition last night -in Dundalk Library where it will run until March 7. The exhibition e consists of 12 original ink drawings nof buildings from all over Dundalk .which Miriam created during hDecember and January. t Amazingly Miriam only really dbegan to draw last year when on lholidays in Spain where she began ssketching some pebble stones on the beach. She then progressed . to sketching family members and nanimals before deciding to try and fink some of Dundalk’s most historic buildings on to page. The 53-year old is a self-taught artist and she is hopeful her story can inspire other people to unlock talents that they might not even realise they possessed.

“I am very excited to be presenting my very first exhibition in Dundalk and the whole thing has just really come about very quickly. I actually only began drawing maybe a year ago when I was on holiday in Spain and from there I have just become really passionate about it. I started to post some of my drawings on the excellent Dundalk Northend and Friends photo page on Facebook and got some great feedback which inspired me to do more drawings. I was asked before Christmas to draw the Four Courts in Dublin and I was really happy with how it turned out so at the beginning of December I decided to draw 12 historical buildings from around Dundalk.

Pictures included in the exhibition include the old library, the Redemptorist Chapel, the Maid of Erin, Kelly’s Monument, Ballymascanlon Village, Dundalk Central Signal Station, the Green Church, the Court House, Town Hall, St Nicholas Catholic Church and finally Quay St Station.

Miriam decided to call the exhibition ‘Dear Dundalk’ after an old Des Wilson song that her mother used to play. The talented artist is hopeful that the drawings will evoke some wonderful memories for many people around town.

“I love the whole process of drawing and when I finish I sometimes find it hard to believe that I’ve actually drawn them,. I am self-taught and I think I have developed patience from being a yoga teacher for 25 years which has helped. I am hoping to eventually bring the drawings around to nursing homes and to elderly community groups as I believe evoking wonderful old memories can be very enjoyable as well as very therapeutic,” stated Miriam.

“I also hope that my story can hopefully inspire other people to unlock their talents and put themselves out there and do things they maybe didn’t think were possible,” she added.

CuChulainn Archers in Vegas Family deserve Five members of CuChulainn Archers travelled to Vegas to attend the World famous Las Vegas Shoot 2020, with the finals of the World Cup also being held at the same venue on the same weekend.

While Eamonn Rogers, Michelle Brohan and Deirdre Rogers had competed in Las Vegas before, for Christina O’Sullivan and Ann Marie Murray, it was a first time to shoot against so many archers in such a big venue.

The Las Vegas leg of the Indoor World Cup is held in the SouthPoint Casino, and it was a strange feeling to walk through the casino with the bow in hand and quiver and arrows on the hip.

The Vegas Shoot is known as the largest and most prestigious indoor archery tournament in the world. The event brought almost 4000 archers from around the Globe ranging from beginner archers to Olympic champions. This year saw a new attendance record of 3,816 archers and over 6,000

Sinn Féin TD for Louth Ruairí Ó Murchú has said that the family of Seamus Ludlow deserve to know the truth about the circumstances of his death and the persistent failure of the State to investigate it properly.

Speaking from the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin on Wednesday last, Teachta Ó Murchú said that the family has been denied the truth for over 40 years.

“It is outrageous that they have been forced to take legal action in an effort to establish the two Commissions of Investigation recommended by the Barron Report in 2006.

“I attended today to support the

family of Seamus Ludlow and I will be raising this case with the next Minister for Justice to urge the establishment of these commissions of investigation which would remove the necessity for litigation by the family and end their ongoing torment.

“Judgement on today’s hearing will be delivered at a later date and I hope it will be a positive result for this family.

“I also urge the Garda Commissioner Drew Harris to fulfil the commitments he made to this family in December when he told them he would examine all possible investigative opportunities in this case.”

As part of a campaign to have a full immersion Gaelcholáiste open in Dundalk under the patronage of An Foras Pátrúnachta, parents are also looking at how to promote Irish with the next generation.

The first step of this is to open a Youth Club ‘as Gaeilge’ supported by Ógras of Conradh na Gaeilge, with a maiden Registration Night for interested children which took place on February 13 in the Dundalk Conradh na Gaeilge building, at 5 Seatown Place.

gone the necessary Garda vetting and youth leadership course in preparation for the opening. Parents and children are invited to drop in on Thursday to meet the leaders and enjoy some crafts and games with the team.

The club is open to children ranging from 5th class to 3rd year and all the games, activities and crafts will be conducted ‘as Gaeilge’. This is an important element in the promotion of Irish in Co. Louth and the organisers believe that it needs as much support from all interested people as possible if it is to be successful.

Council launches Housing First Initiative

Louth County Council Chief Executive, Joan Martin and Brian Friel, Deputy CEO, Peter McVerry Trust launched the Housing First Initative for the North East Region on Tuesday February 18.

This national initiative is a new service aimed at vulnerable people sleeping rough and long term homeless service users. This new initiative will ensure the successful rehousing of people with complex needs and offer supports to ensure they have the care needed to stay in a home of their own.

The three local authorities, Louth County Council, Cavan County Council and Monaghan County Council together with Peter McVerry Trust will provide the housing units scattered across the three counties.

The support will also be provided by Peter McVerry Trust’s North East Housing first team with support of the HSE.

Captain’s drive-in at Dundalk GC The current captain and three former captains almost took the spoils in Sunday’s 14 Hole Champagne Team of Four competition which was held in conjunction with the annual Captain’s Drive-In ceremony.

The 2020 Captain Trevor Giff (9) partnered with Michael Coburn (10), Dessie Ward (13) and Pat Davis (16) to shoot 70pts in the sunshine over the 14 holes but they were beaten into second place

by Adrian Kenny (16), Martin Cairns (16), Michael Brown (20) and Gregory McCaughey (6) who shot an excellent score of 74pts to take first prize.

Captain Trevor and Lady Captain Pauline Campbell then took centre-stage at 1pm when they followed a piper to the first tee for the traditional ceremonial drivein watched by a large crowd of family, friends and members.

Once their tee-shots were dispatched, the second competition of the day, a Nine Hole Scotch Mixed Foursomes with a shotgun start was held and this time it was turn of Vice-Captains Eoin Doohan and Alison Quigley, playing alongside the two captains, to grab the headlines.

After a double-bogey at the first, and playing off a combined nett handicap of 8.5, they

shot a gross score of level par 36 over the front nine which included birdies at the par four third, the par five sixth and the par three ninth.

That gave them a nett score of 27.5 and victory by a wide margin from Liam and Teresa O’Mahony (12.7) who shot 32.25 nett.

On the Back Nine victory went to Ciaran and Caroline Dunne who shot 32.5 nett to just pip Dave Dorr and Bernie Prendergast (10) by half-a-shot.

The day’s play was followed by a presentation ceremony and music in the clubhouse as the 2020 season begins to unfold.
