Louth football received a much-needed boost late on Monday evening when it was announced that legendary Tyrone man Mickey Harte had agreed a three-year term with the Wee County. The move represents a huge coup for Louth who have endured a torrid year having been relegated to division four in the national league as well as suffering a first-round exit in the Championship at the hands of Longford. Harte parted ways with Tyrone earlier this month after his request for a one-year contract extension was rejected. The 68-year old brought unprecedented success to his native county having won the Sam Maguire for the Red Hand county in 2003, 2005 and 2008. Tyrone exited this year’s championship on the same weekend as Louth and when news broke that Harte’s tenure had ended the Louth GAA board moved quickly with chairman Peter Fitzpatrick making contact with the Glencull man. From Page 1 According to Fitzpatrick the deal was concluded after a couple of meetings and now that the news has been made official he believes it has given Louth supporters a much needed boost. “We are absolutely delighted to have Mickey come in and agree to take the job for the next three years. He is bringing in his righthand man Gavin Devlin with him and the two of them will also be in charge of the U20’s. When Tyrone and Mickey parted ways we knew that we had to be quick and we knew we had only one chance to get the deal done. We had a sub-committee of myself, Bob Doheny, Sean McClean, Aidan Berrill and Francie McMullen and between us we worked hard to get things over the line. Negotiations lasted two weeks with Mickey initially telling us that he wanted a wee bit of time to think about it. True to his word he got back to us a few days later and after a couple of meetings everything was agreed and we announced it on Monday night.
Mickey Harte is Louth’s new manager.
“It’s been a tough year for Louth football but I know that this will give all Louth supporters a massive lift and give them hope for the future. I have never seen such a huge reaction to an announcement I’ve been involved in whether it be sport or politics and it has been overwhelmingly positive which is great to see. When I took over as chairman I promised that I would find Louth a brand new home to call their own and that I would show ambition with regards to getting Louth
back to where I feel they belong. “With this appointment I think we have shown that Louth mean business and with the new stadium currently been built I feel that the future is bright for football in Louth. We needed something like this to get the buzz back amongst supporters and I know Mickey can’t wait to meet the lads. He ‘s already got started and has been watching a number of DVD’s of Louth performances this year. We also gave Mickey and Gavin the task of looking after our U20’s as we feel the structure is broken at the minute with very few players coming through. Tyrone are known for their excellent underage system and we’re hopeful Mickey and Gavin can work their magic here too,” stated Peter. “We will do everything we can to help them and I know the players will give their all and get behind our new management team as we look to put Louth football back on the map,” he added. Mickey Harte is due to give his first press conference as Louth manager this Friday morning.
Louth GAA stars to take part in ‘Sleep out for Simon’ The Simon Community are asking the good people of Dundalk and beyond to give up the comfort of their beds for one night only to raise some much needed funds for the organisation in what has been a tough year for all charities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With
just nine days to go until the virtual ‘Sleepout for Simon’ takes place the local charity are urging families around Louth to take up the challenge and make a difference. The event will take place on Friday week, 4th of December and it will see friends, families, colleagues and teammates from the county take part in their own homes by pitching a tent in the garden, bedding down on the living room floor or anywhere they choose away from the comfort of their own beds. For young children in the house this will no doubt be a very exciting adventure to take part in and one that will live long in their memory. Those taking part can head over to JustGiving to make a donation or create their own fundraising page where family and friends can send them support and donations. Sponsorship cards are also available from the Simon Community and you can call 0429339583 for further
information. Louth GAA have got behind the Simon Community’s virtual campaign which will see people from all over the country forego the comforts of their bed for one night to generate awareness, empathy and understanding of the struggle of facing homelessness in the community. Former Louth forward Shane Lennon is now working for the GAA as a games development administrator and is only too happy to lend his support to the campaign. “There are a few of us in Louth GAA who have got behind the Simon’s campaign and we will be sleeping out on the 4th of December for the night. It’s nice to give something back to the community and help those who are going through a tough time. It’s only one night for us but there are people who have to sleep out throughout the year,” stated Shane. The main way to help would be to sup-
port what we are doing through the JustGiving link which can be found on the Louth GAA social media pages,” stated Shane. Sleepout for Simon will take place in nine days time on the 4th of December and will raise awareness and funds for those experiencing homelessness in Dundalk.

Thomas urges shoppers to Shop Local this Christmas “Whether online or in person, the choices that you make for your Christmas shopping this year will have a real impact on your local community. Shopping local keeps small businesses trading and local people employed. Local businesses employ your friend, your neighbour, your cousins, your brothers, sisters, parents and wider community. It’s so important to choose local, especially this year” explains Thomas McEvoy, Louth County Council’s Head of Enterprise. “Our role at the Local Enterprise Office Louth is to support the development of small businesses across the county. And that’s why we are so proud to launch our Shop Local • Search Local campaign for 2020. We’ve created a webpage listing local businesses and their website so that if
Thomas McEvoy, Louth Co Council Head of Enterprise. you can’t shop in person that you can still search local and support local” he continues. Visit www.localenterprise.ie/Louth to start your Christmas shopping today. You’ll find
a huge selection of local shops, gifts, crafts, home, garden, food, fashion and so much more. Thomas explains “Our #LookForLouth campaign encourages
everyone to add the word “Louth” or the name of your local town or village to your online search. This helps you to find out whether the gift or product you’re looking for is available locally before ordering from abroad. Once you’ve found the gift you’re looking for you can shop in person in some stores, use click and collect or avail of the delivery service from others.” Inviting local businesses to be part of the campaign, Thomas continued “If you’re a local business who is trading online, you too can be listed on our page for free. Just email Tradingonline@leo.louthcoco. ie with your business name, web address, a logo or photo and a 100 word description of your product or service and we’ll add you to the listing. We’ll actively promote the page across
the county in the run up to Christmas.” Speaking about other ways to support local businesses Thomas outlined “Post about the small local businesses you love on social media. Giving personal recommendations or positive reviews is really beneficial as it helps to raise visibility and build trust with new customers. When posting about your local shopping success, use the hashtag #LookForLouth so we can see and share your post.” Thomas concluded “2020 has been an incredibly challenging year for local people and small businesses. With a vaccine on the horizon, hopefully 2021 won’t be so tough. But in the meantime we can each play our part by supporting jobs and small businesses in our community by choosing to Shop Local.”

Local Celtic fans to raffle historic match ball for SOSAD Lifelong local Celtic fans have given up a prized possession to try and raise some much needed funds for SOSAD. Liam Gaynor, Dessie Hanks and Frank Brennan were at Celtic’s final league game of the 1997/98 season knowing their team must beat St Johnstone to not only win the league but to also stop their arch ri-
vals Rangers from winning ten league titles in a row. Goals from Henrik Larsson and Harald Bratbaak helped the Glasgow side end Rangers dominance and after the game there were five signed balls given to fans after the game by means of a raffle with the Dundalk trio lucky enough to win one of them. ball which is signed by all the team including club legend Henrik Larsson will now be given to SOSAD to be raffled off to a lucky winner with all funds raised going to the local organisation which is a suicide prevention and bereavement support charity. According to Gerry Duffy, chairman of SOSAD the raffle will be launched shortly with the lucky winner being chosen on New Years Eve. “We are very grate-
ful to Liam, Dessie and Frank for their generous offer and we know that there will be Celtic fans from all over the world looking to get their hands on this prized possession. The game against St Johnstone was one of the most famous wins in Celtic’s history given the fact it stopped Rangers winning ten in a row that season. I’d also like to thank PMK Civil Engineering who are a company in Glasgow and they have been a very
good friend to SOSAD over the years. They are sponsoring the raffle and I know them through my friendship with Paul Docherty who I have known for years through supporting Celtic. He’s been coming to Dundalk now for 30 years and runs the company with his brother Kevin and Paul O’Brien,” explained Gerry. “The raffle will be launched next week and it will be going online and we’re expecting a
big response given we have had interest shown from Celtic supporters clubs in London, Glasgow, Belfast and New York to name a few. Obviously it has been a tough year in 2020 with regards to fundraising due to COVID restrictions so we are hoping that this raffle can bring in some much needed funds which will allow us to continue offering our services which are available 24/7 by contacting 0429327311,” stated Gerry.

Colm Markey officially becomes Irish MEP
Brexit readiness for businesses and challenges to the agri sector are top of mind for Ireland’s newest MEP Colm Markey, who officially began working in the role on Friday. The former Louth County Councillor takes up his post as a member of the European Parliament for the Midlands NorthWest constituency at a plenary session in Brus-
sels on Monday. He is replacing Mairead McGuinness following her appointment as EU Commissioner and will join his four Fine Gael MEP colleagues in the European People’s Party. MEP Markey said: “I am delighted to take up my seat as the newest Member of the European Parliament on Monday. It is an absolute honour
to represent the Midlands North-West constituency in Europe. “I look forward to hitting the ground running and working with my fellow Fine Gael MEPs on the issues that matter for Ireland.” Mr Markey officially became an MEP on Friday after the European Parliament received notification of his appointment from
the clerk of the Dáil. A farmer and businessman by background, Mr Markey will take a seat on the Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development as the vital negotiations on a new Common Agricultural Policy continue at EU level. He will also serve as a Member on the Transport and Tourism Committee and a substitute Member
of the Fisheries Committee. MEP Markey continued: “I am particularly mindful that my appointment comes at a crucial time for Europe and for Ireland. “It is also a time of global crisis and the EU is working to support Member States dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic and economic fallout.
“I am deeply committed to ensuring I represent my constituents and Ireland’s best interests on these and other vital issues as an MEP.” MEP Markey was first elected to Louth County Council in 2009. He joins his four other Fine Gael MEP delegation colleagues Seán Kelly, Deirdre Clune, Frances Fitzgerald and Maria Walsh.

Conor Keelan insists he will revisit discretionary budget amendment
Cllr Conor Keelan.
Fianna Fail councillor Conor Keelan has insisted that he has not given up on trying to ensure that the €225,000 discretionary budget is split between Dundalk, Drogheda and Ardee on basis of population rather than an even split. Cllr Keelan was speaking on Friday the day the after a vote was taken to withdraw his amendment which had narrowly passed just three days earlier. During that initial budget meeting on Monday evening Cllr Keelan put forward his amendment stating that the discretionary budget should be divided between the three districts on a basis of population as well as number of representatives elected in each area (Dundalk
currently has 13 members elected, Drogheda 10 and Ardee 6). In previous years the €225,000 had been split evenly three ways which gave each district €75,000 to spend in total. The discretionary budget funds are generally used by councillors to support local community groups or underfunded projects locally. Under Cllr Keelan’s amendment Dundalk would have got just over €100,000 of the pot, Drogheda just over €77000 and Ardee just under €47000. Unsurprisingly the amendment was met with anger amongst a number of councillors particular those in the Ardee and Mid-Louth regions including Cllr Keelan’s Fianna Fail party colleagues Liam Reilly, James
Byrne and John Sheridan. After a lengthy debate a vote was taken with the amendment narrowly passing by 12 votes to 11 (there was one abstention and five councillors absent). However, when the councillors returned to St Gerard’s Hall on Thursday evening to vote once again on the budget for 2021 (councillors failed to pass the budget for 2021 on Monday evening with votes being tied at 12 apiece) a proposal was put forward by Cllr Liam Reilly to revert to the original split of €75000 between Dundalk, Drogheda and Ardee. The proposal was seconded by Cllr Emma Coffey and thus passed. According to Cllr Keelan he was disappointed by the about
turn of some councillors while vowing to revisit the subject again in January. “All I was asking for was some proportionality and fairness in respect of the discretionary budget and how it is split in Louth. Louth is the only county in the state where the funding is spent on a basis of geography rather than population which is a concept which doesn’t seem to have been grasped by anybody,” stated Conor. “Obviously I was disappointed when the decision was made to overturn the amendment which had originally been passed on Monday evening. I was informed on Tuesday that some people who had supported me initially were no longer be-
n t d
hind the amendment and upon hearing that I offered to put forward a compromise. Unfortunately, this was not acceptable to a number of councillors and we reverted back to the original even split which I believe is completely unfair. “There was an agreement to revisit this matter in January and I expect a serious examination of this topic and a frank discussion. For me this issue is still very much alive and has merely been deferred rather than binned,” stated Conor. Meanwhile the budget for 2021 was passed on Thursday evening by 20 votes to 8 with all seven Sinn Fein councillors and independent Maeve Yore voting against it.

Deputy O’Murchú welcomes Broadband commitment
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Broadband and Communications, Ruairí Ó Murchú TD has welcomed the commitment by National Broadband Ireland (NBI) to ‘technically and commercially assess the plans to accelerate the National Broadband Plan’. Mr Ó Murchú made a number of recommendations around the survey, design, build and connec-

A committee, led by Larry Magnier, with members Jack McGahon, Brendan Watters, Chris Fingleton and John Horan was formed in 1997 with a view to undertaking a significant project to mark the advent of the new millennium. A competition for the design was held which was won by local sculptor, Tanya Nygaard. Funds were provided by the Peace and Reconciliation Programme, the National Millennium Committee as well as local sponsorship from the ESB, Nicholas Lynch Supermarket, Brendan Watters Insurances and BHK Credit Union. The architect for the project was John F. McGahon and sons, The building contractor was Padraig Moneley. proximity of private operators and existing infrastructure in areas, that short-term solutions be considered. ‘I welcome the commitment made today by NBI to approach private operators to discuss short term solutions for these households. ‘The National Broadband Plan aims to have 544,000 homes, schools, farms and businesses fitted
with a fibre connection by 2025. There will be households waiting five years for a broadband connection and the survey and design phase must take into consideration the fastest option for household connection. ‘The announcement by National Broadband Ireland of a team solely focussed on the acceleration of all aspects of the broadband rollout is positive and

Dundalk clubs get ‘Texaco Support for Sport’ reminder
A reminder has been issued to registered sports clubs in Dundalk that the 31st December closing date for receipt of completed applications under the Texaco Support for Sport club funding initiative is now nearing. Under the scheme, Valero Energy (Ireland) Limited – the company that markets fuel in Ireland under the Texaco brand – has set aside a fund of €130,000 to be divided on a 26 county-by-county basis with each successful club – including, it is hoped, one from Co. Louth – receiving an equal amount of €5,000 in each case. The scheme, first announced in September, is open to all sports clubs irrespective of sporting discipline, size, membership, age, cultural appeal or gender, the only requirement being that applicant clubs be properly constituted and hold a valid Games & Sports Number (GS Number) issued by the Office of the Revenue Commissioners. Dates for the announcement of winners and presentation of awards will be announced early next year. DkIT students to go virtual in aid of Cara Cancer Support From Monday the 23rd of November, the third year Digital Marketing and Public Relations degree students will be hosting a range of virtual events in the hope of raising awareness and much-needed funds for the Cara Cancer Support Centre, Dundalk. With Covid-19 restrictions still in place, the students had to get creative with their fundraising ideas. They decided to run a series of virtual events to help raise money for their chosen charity, Cara Cancer Support. There are a total of six events, each one unique in its own way.
The first event took place virtually on Monday the 23rd of November and they will finish up on the 7th of December with one group hiking up Slieve Gullion. The concept for the fundraiser is ‘Challenges for Cara.’ It centres around the fact that people living with cancer face many different challenges on a daily basis. The students wanted to test themselves by completing a series of challenges too. ‘The challenges we will undergo throughout the different events will hopefully symbolize the challenges that the people who use the
Cara Support Centre experience when living with cancer,” explained third-year student Kerrie McGarrell. “Life is never a straightforward journey; it has the tendency to throw curve balls at us when we least expect it,” she added. Cara Cancer Support Centre is run by volunteers and it offers free support and services to people living with cancer. They provide a supportive environment in a warm, welcoming and relaxed atmosphere where patients and family members can come to find solace and avail of the experience of cancer survivors. Each of the six teams
have each set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds throughout their individual events and they are: #Lightsup for Cara, #A Cara Christmas, #Climb for Cara, #Spot Kick for Cara, #Dress up for Cara and Camp Out for Cara. “All funds raised from the students GoFundMe pages will go to Cara. We can’t express enough how grateful we are to everyone involved in helping us make a difference,” said Kerrie. All are welcome to join us online over on the DkIT Challenges for Cara Cancer Facebook page, starting Monday the 23rd of November.

The TLT set to host North East’s first socially distant Christmas event
TLT Productions presents a spectacular, socially distant, festive family outing this December at their Christmas Wonderland event taking place from December 4th – Dec 23rd at the TLT Concert Hall and Events Centre in Drogheda. After what has been a crucifying year for the entertainment and live arts sector due to ongoing Covid-19 Government implemented restrictions, the management and staff at the TLT Concert Hall plan to end the year on a festive high with their innovative ‘Christmas Wonderland’ experience. Owner of the TLT Patrick Leddy explained that he was not prepared to let the year pass without ensuring that some Christmas joy be offered to the families of the North East region as well as giving them an opportunity to visit Santa in a safe and extremely Covid compliant environment. Patrick explains, “We have a large 900 seater venue with multiple performance spaces, situated in the heart of the north east, and it would be crazy for us not to diversify from the norm and produce an experience for all to enjoy this Christmas, as well as to create employment for many skilled and talented actors, dancers and stage crew to help them and their family’s though these difficult times. Our event will feature live actors and musical performances in various zones around the venue, with family’s entering the experience in five minute intervals to ensure there is no ‘gathering’ of people in any one area. With the easing of Covid restrictions due to come into affect from Dec 2nd, and with the expansive safety measures and control systems that we have implemented throughout our venue we are confident that our event can go ahead and people will feel very safe. We have invested a large amount of money into this event and there has already been a phenomenal response to it with many dates already sold out, so we fully intend to proceed with our plans. We, like a lot businesses and in particular our colleagues and friends in the arts and entertainment sector have endured a particularly tough year so far and we have had to really think outside the box and come up with inno-
vative ideas to keep our business afloat. In recent months we have temporarily adapted our venue to a court room setting, including converting our backstage rooms into holding cells to accommodate the Irish Court Services for jury empanelling. We have also accommodated The Irish Blood Transfusion Board throughout the year. We will continue to adapt the venue any way necessary to accommodate the wide scope of new clients that we now find ourselves dealing with, but live music and arts will always be at the core of our business not matter what. We are looking forward to a very busy 2021 with many live show’s confirmed such as Jimmy Carr, Sarah McMilican, Menopause The Musical, The Wizard Of Oz musical and much more”. The production team at the TLT have utilised every square foot of their vast complex and transformed the theatre into a spectacular indoor Christmas Wonderland. Your magical Christmas experience begins as you arrive at the theatre car park where you will be greeted by the resident station master who will guide you and your family into this magnificent wonderland of Christmas magic and fun. Family’s get to explore Santa’s Headquarters on a hourlong ‘socially distant’ guided tour by Santa’s elves, and will enjoy meeting some familiar characters along the way including story time with Mrs. Clause in her cozy lodge with complimentary hot chocolate for the children and mulled wine for the grown-ups. After meeting some of the other festive characters along the way, guests can then relax in the ‘Christmas Village’ with a hot beverage and some Christmas treats at their designated table, whilst enjoying the magic of theatre with a LIVE elves workshop and musical showcase, before finally meeting Santa himself in a socially distant setting for a pre-Christmas gift and a picture on his sleigh. Sensory and wheelchair accessible sessions are also being made available so that everyone can enjoy this magical experience. Tickets are on sale now from www.The TLT.ie or call the box office Mon to Fri from 10am- 1pm on 041 9878560.

IT’S been announced that priests from the Marist order will no longer serve the Holy Family Parish in Dundalk from next Autumn. The Holy Family church and parochial house are based in Muirhevnamor. The Marist order is now liaising with the Archdiocese of Armagh about the transition, according to Fr Cormac McNamara. “It’s due to changing circumstances including the aging and reducing numbers of Irish Marist priests,” he said. “The Marist priests have been reflecting on our presence in Ireland, in light of our changing circumstances. These circumstances include the ageing and dwindling number of Irish arts priests, whose average age is 74,” he said. “Regrettably, we are no longer in a position to sustain our community in Holy Family or to provide a parish team serve the people there. I realise that this news will come as a huge shock to our parishioners and friends at Holy. “We are conscious that Marists have served the parish and Holy Family for almost 40 years. It has been a privilege
for us Marists to be able to contribute to a range of pastoral activities in the Armagh archdiocese since 1861 – in the fields of education, parishes, caring of young people, chaplaincy and other ministries.” Fr McNamara broke the news to parishioners in a video posted on the parish’s Facebook page. “It’s a big shock to the community as a whole. We’ve been here over 40 years and it’s sad for us too,” he said. “But we realise that’s the life we’ve chosen and it comes in the context of ageing Marist priests. “It was becoming impossible to maintain community life which is part of the life of the congregation.”

New Caddy from VW Commercial Vehicles
The new generation is going to be very different and yet it fulfils all familiar demands: Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ fifth generation Caddy will be a completely new car. No screw has been left untouched. The new Caddy will nevertheless again become the benchmark vehicle in the A segment of commercial urban delivery vans and privately used family MPVs. For as
a marvellously spacious vehicle with two wheelbases, it continues to fulfil all traditional desires for far-reaching transport options and high levels of freedom in the everyday routines of the manual trades, service providers and families. The new Caddy’s concept designs are becoming more concrete: it is clear that a lot is going to change on Volkswagen

Commercial Vehicles’ small van/MPV model next year. The Cargo version of the Caddy underlines the new confidence in the otherwise so functional, practical category. The draft design shows clearly: the roof line slopes down slightly towards the back, the short wheelbase is becoming longer and the wheels, as requested, bigger. The LED light graphics too are becoming very innovative: the front lights visually
extend the grille and lead directly on to the vehicle body’s sporty, elegant side lines. The draft design of the new Caddy also already clearly indicates more vertically arranged, slim lights at the back. Everything different, but still with a large cargo capacity and great flexibility. The features that always made the Caddy attractive to its customers are retained. In short: 100 per cent new, 100 per cent Caddy.

Opel Corsa-e crowned best small car
The new Opel Corsa-e has claimed a Golden Steering Wheel 2020 award, one of the most important awards in the German automobile industry, defeating tough rivals in the Hyundai i20 and VW e-up, to take the first prize in the small car category. The win represents the 18th time Opel has won a Golden Steering Wheel award and adds to a growing number of accolades its best-selling new Corsa has enjoyed since its launch in late 2019, including the Autobest Best Buy Car of Europe 2020 title. The Golden Steering Wheel Awards are hosted by German car magazine Auto Bild and the national weekly newspaper Bild am Sonntag. Readers are invited to vote for the best cars of the year, spanning eight categories. Three finalists in these respective vehicle categories are then evaluated by an independent jury of automotive experts, on the DEKRA-Lausitzring racetrack, using criteria based on the Auto Bild test method. With a total of 3,221 points, the new Opel Corsae ultimately overcame strong competition from the Hyundai i20 in second and the VW e-Up in third, with an advantage of more than 140 and 430 points respectively. Presented with the prize, Opel CEO, Michael Lohscheller said: “Opel is electric and our new Opel Corsa-e is the best proof. It shows that an electric car today can be not only dynamic and practical, but also affordable for all. We are proud of the way the Corsa-e convinces everyone: our customers, the readers of Auto Bild and Bild am Sonntag, as well as the expert jury and celebrities.” With 100kW (136hp) and 260Nm of torque from the first squeeze of the accelerator, the Cor-
sa-e offers state-of-the-art electric mobility. With a range of up to 337 km (WLTP), the agile fiveseater is suitable for every-day use. Using 100kW DC, the 50kWh battery can be fast-charged to up to 80% in 30 minutes. Available to order now for 211-registration, the all-electric Corsa-e is on available in SC and Elite trims and retails in Ireland from €26,854 and €30,133, respectively, effective January 2021 and inclusive of SEAI grant. A low-cost finance rate of 2.9% is currently being promoted, together with 3 years’ free servicing. Opel has also teamed up with Energia, Ireland’s leading independent energy provider, to offer a free home charger to new Opel electric vehicle customers. Opel Ireland recently launched the Take Charge campaign. The exciting offer invites customers to register a new, all-electric Opel Corsa-e in January 2021 and if they are not happy after six months of emissions-free driving, Opel will exchange it for an equivalent priced petrol or diesel model.
