Tributes have been paid to Robert McLoughlin who died in the early hours of Saturday morning when he was struck by two cars as he was crossing the road to get to his house on the Old Newry Road.

The 29-year old had just got out of a taxi when the incident occurred just after 3am.

The road at the scene was immediately closed to allow gardaí from the Forensic Collision Investigation Unit examine the scene. Tributes to Robert were led by one of his best friends, Cllr John McGahon who is the current chairman of Dundalk Municipal District.

Garda warning to parents

By Eunan Whyte Gardai are calling on parents to take responsibility for the actions of their children over the Halloween period.

Following a number of incidents in places such as Blackrock and Knockbridge last year when groups of teenagers gathered from other areas, a Garda spokesman called on parents to be aware of where their children are.

Jim Boylan from the Narrow Water Bridge Community Network remains confident that the creation of a cross border bridge will happen despite the fact that planning permission for the project lapsed yesterday.

Planning permission for the ambitious project was granted back in 2012 with funding secured from governments north and south of the border as well as from the EU. The cable-stayed bridge would have connected Cornamucklagh near Omeath, Co Louth, with Narrow Water near Warrenpoint, Co Down.

proximately 138.35m and the north span is approximately 56.8 m giving a total length of approximately 195m.

Supporters of the scheme claim that the bridge is crucial to the prospects for economic regeneration and reconciliation of the border community in Louth and Down.

However, during the intervening five years the project has been hit

by numerous setbacks including the project being put on hold after Louth County Council stated that tenders for the project ran substantially above the allocated budget. Funding of approximately €17.4m had been secured through the INTERREG IVA programme administered by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) but tenders received ranged from

€26m to €40m plus vat.

Yesterday may have marked the expiration of planning consent for the project but that is just a minor hiccup according to Jim Boylan from the Narrow Water Bridge Community Network.

“We are still very confident this will happen,” stated Jim. “It has been a frustrating time with the project being put on hold and the fact that the

Stormont Executive is no longer in place has also halted progress.

“With regards to the planning permission expiring we are not too worried about that as it is our understanding that Louth County Council have already begun the process of renewing that permission.

“The project is shovel ready and I believe that once we get the Executive back in place in Northern Ireland things will begin to get moving again. We have a paper ready to go forward to the next North/South ministerial meeting but obviously that cannot be submitted until the executive reforms.

“This project is in the best interests of both sides of the border and would be a huge

economic boost to the whole area.

“That is undisputable as we have already shown that through research. I do not see funding as an issue. We have recently been promised an extra £1bn worth of funding from the Tory government so for me the main focus should be on reforming the Executive in Stormont and from there I think this project can move ahead quite quickly.

“We have been talking about building this bridge since 1968 and although we have had many setbacks in the intervening years I am still hopeful that we can get this done. All sides need to work together to ensure the project does not fall by the wayside,” stated Jim.

Council issue bonfire warning ahead of Halloween Louth County Council Fire & Rescue has issued an appeal in the run up to Halloween urging members of the public not to supply any waste material to persons who do not hold a valid waste collection permit.

Louth Fire & Rescue Services incur substantial costs at Halloween in responding to bonfire related incidents, as well as cleaning up after bonfires that take place.

The uncontrolled burning of waste, particularly in bonfires,

is illegal under the Air Pollution Act, 1987, and The Waste Management Acts, 1996-2011. The burning of waste also releases toxic pollutants into the air which are known to be damaging to public health and the environment.

“Bonfires are an illegal, dangerous and costly tradition,” explained Eamon Woulfe, Louth Chief Fire Officer.

He added: “Bonfires are often built close to houses and other property presenting risks to personal safety and

property. Halloween is one the busiest times of the year for the fire services and responding to bonfire call outs puts a strain on existing resources. I would like people to be aware of the fire safety hazards that arise from illegal bonfires, where the burning of highly combustible materials may lead to serious injuries or death.”

The Fire Service is advising members of public not to buy, use or supply fireworks. A firework includes all those

devices which burn and explode to give a loud noise and a visual effect – basically a typical, traditional firework.

Bangers are also defined as fireworks.

It is illegal to possess any fireworks that may have been legally purchased outside Ireland and brought back into this country. Many of the fireworks that are offered for sale illegally here have not passed any quality control tests and are possibly defective.

Gardaí will confiscate any fireworks found in

the possession of people who in turn will be liable to prosecution.

In addition there is a specific offence under law for throwing any lit firework at a person or property. A person can be fined up to €10,000 for possession of unlicensed fireworks and for igniting, throwing, or possession of unlicensed fireworks with intent to sell or supply, the penalties can be up to €10,000 and five years in jail. The only exception to these laws is where a professional

fireworks display is authorised under licence.

According to Sheila Broderick, Louth Senior Assistant Chief Fire Officer: “Illegal fireworks may be manufactured without safety standards and can cause serious damage to users, particularly children. Parents should monitor their children and ensure they do not play with fireworks. Throughout the country, every year children end up tragically injured and often scarred for life, after using illegal fireworks.”

reminding organisations whose clients are children or vulnerable adults to double check that all of their staff and volunteers in relevant roles have been Garda Vetted.

As the new legislation has also introduced eVetting, the process is now much simpler and quicker, and Louth Volunteer Centre are happy to provide assistance to any group that need it.’

Mechanic banned from road for two years A mechanic who escaped from Gardai by driving across the border and later reported his car stolen was banned from the road for two years after he was spotted driving the car by a Garda three weeks after the incident.

As a result, Nigel Skelly, of Kellystown, Grangebellew, Drogheda, was con-

victed of dangerous driving despite contesting three charges at Dundalk District Court.

The defendant argued that he should have been given the opportunity to take part in an identity parade. He stated that if there is no good reason for Gardai not organising an identity parade then he should be given the ben-

efit of the doubt and the case dismissed.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that the investigating Garda was satisfied that it was the defendant who was driving and in such circumstances an identity parade would not be needed.

Judge John Coughlan ruled that the Garda had given evidence of identifying

the man on three occasions and stated that he was not impressed with Mr Skelly’s attempts to evade the situation. He imposed a two-year ban and €500 fine in relation to one count of dangerous driving and took the other two into consideration.

The court heard that on March 26 the defendant came to the attention of

Gardai. During a pursuit Mr Skelly drove into a garden at a house and while turning the investigating Garda got a look at his face. During the pursuit the vehicle’s four wheels left the road while going across a bridge at Ravensdale, while a pedestrian had to take evasive action and he also drove up the off ramp onto a motorway

against the flow of traffic.

Three hours later the vehicle was reported stolen, but this was later withdrawn.

Three weeks later the Garda saw the man in the same vehicle in traffic in Drogheda. He called to his house and was satisfied it was the same person he has seen on the two previous occasions.

Residents voice whiskey warehouse concerns

Electric car dream over for Louth manufacturer The dream is over for a Co. Louth car manufacturer who were planning on introducing the first Irish built electric car to the domestic market.

In 2015, Swift Composites Prototypes, a company based in Dunleer announced that they were planning to enter the electronic car market with the Alex Eroadster. The car manufacturer claimed that they would sell the car for €30000 and by the end of 2016 it was hoped that they would be producing one vehicle

a week before ramping up production in 2017.

The company promised a faster, lighter car which would be able to travel over the twice the distance of its competitors.

Speaking to the Dundalk Leader in 2015 project lead Tom Finnegan predicted that the car would be able to drive for up to 300km before needing a charge and would be able to reach 0-100km/h in under ten seconds.

However, those plans went

up in smoke last week when a liquidator was appointed to the Louth manufacturer. Their accounts showed that they made a loss of just under €30000 in 2014. According to Tom the company has been struggling financially for some time and the project was stalled due to lack of funds.

Tom, from Galway, is now working with another company called Fintos Electric Cars as he pursues his dream to build an Irish made electric car.

Concerned residents from Kilcurry will hold a meeting this Thursday evening to voice their concerns about the proposed construction of storage warehouses by the Great Northern Distillery.

According to John Gartland from the ‘Kilcurry Concerned Residents Committee’ the general feeling around the community is that they do not want such a large structure to be built in the area. Residents have voiced concerns about the potential size of the project as well as environmental and scenic concerns.

“We have already gauged opinion in the community and nobody wants these warehouses to be built.

“There are six warehouses being built initially in a field behind the church which will each span 4000sqm.

“Erecting something that big in the middle of the village not only creates an eyesore but it will also inhibit future generations’ ability to build houses in the area.

“We also have worries about ‘black whiskey fungus’ which is extremely common in spirits maturation facilities. This

fungus is airborne and creates a black soot like material on houses, cars and any physical properties nearby. .

“We are not against the Great Northern Distillery or industry and we think it’s great that they are providing employment in the town but we have to look after our community and we don’t think this is in the best interests of Kilcurry.

“We have meetings with the Great Northern Distillery and to their credit they have listened to our concerns and made modifications but ultimately we feel the whole project contravenes Louth County Council’s county plan and we can’t understand how this got approved.

“At the meeting we will tell people who attend how to lodge an official appeal to the council and we are hoping we can stop these warehouses being built,” stated John.

In response a statement from the Great Northern Brewery stated it was their aim to minimise and negative effects on the Kilcurry community and promised that all buildings would be subject to the highest standards.

“Great Northern Distillery started producing whiskey in Dundalk in 2015. Maturation is

an essential part of the process of making whiskey and hence we require warehouses to mature this whiskey. We purchased a large site which enabled us to build warehouses to the highest standard as required by Planning Authorities and Health and Safety regulations. The size of the site means that we can provide a distance greater than that recommended between the warehouses and the nearest neighbouring property.

“It also gives us the scope to build berms where we intend planting over 15,000 trees which will provide a natural barrier,” the company explained.

“We have had a number of meetings with residents, have listened to their concerns and made modifications to our plans accordingly.

“For example, we have reduced the floor elevation of some warehouses, increased the size of the berms and increased the landscaping to minimize impacts on our neighbours as we are keen to be good neighbours in Kilcurry,” read the statement.

The ‘Concerned Kilcurry Residents’ meeting will take place on Thursday evening at 8pm in the Kilcurry Resource centre.

On Thursday last, Transition Year students in St Louis Dundalk were presented with their certificates for successfully completing the Create the Great in You (CGY) Mentoring Programme, formed in 2015, which has as its focus young people in Transition Year in schools.

The tailor made six week programme, created by Ardee man Mark McCormack, includes comedy, archaeology, poetry and magic workshops. Using mentoring workshops and peerbased conversations “Create the Great in You” aims to provide young people with a space to explore how

communication, collaboration and creativity can be applied to develop both community and relationships.

The girls in St Louis were both challenged and facilitated to openly explore and express

Dundalk Credit Union joined in the celebrations to mark International Credit Union Day by officially launching a new Members’ Service Counter at their Market St premises.

Dundalk FC captain Stephen O’Donnell performed the opening on Thursday last of a fullystaffed information desk where members and non-members can go with any queries they have.

At a time when financial institutions around the country are reducing staff and services that deal directly and faceto-face with customers, Dundalk Credit Union is keen to demonstrate the importance it places on customer service, and really getting people the answers or guidance they require in a friendly, efficient, and, most importantly, a face-toface manner.

Conference discusses News Brief Britain’s exit from EU in Bereavement

On a wet and stormy Thursday evening over 100 people packed into a conference room in the Crowne Plaza in Dundalk to talk about Britain’s exit from the EU and its implications especially for Louth and the border region.

Speaking at the conference in the Crowne Plaza on Thursday evening Gerry Adams said that any move toward trade negotiations between Britain and the EU should only be made in the context of the British having brought forward clear proposals on how it intends to ensure that the border remains free,

open and seamless.

“This is especially important in light of last week’s internal report by the Revenue Commissioners which was leaked by RTE. It warned of the significant physical and economic impact Brexit will inflict on the border. It said that businesses will require special permits and face a huge increase in paperwork and bureaucracy.

“It also warned that cross border trade, especially in the areas of the agri-food sector, with its large volumes of trade annually in live animals, finished products and products re-

quiring further processing, will be subject to customs controls.

“The report also warned that if there is no agreement on a trade deal then World Trade Organization (WTO) rules will apply. The likely impact of this is especially evident in the milk production sector.

“Currently, 91,000 Irish companies, many in the Louth and border counties, trade with Britain. Revenue predicts that after Brexit, their customs declarations will mean an 800% increase in volume,” stated Deputy Adams.

Three Year Driving Ban

A man who pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge at Dundalk District Court was banned from the road for three years. Adrian Coca (29) of 8 Griffith Court, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai at Stapleton Place, Dundalk, on September 10, 2016. Judge John Coughlan also imposed a €75 and postponed the disqualification to April 10 next year.

De La Salle Open Day

On Sunday 22nd of October, the De La Salle welcomed boys from fourth, fifth and sixth class and their parents to the school.

Principal Patricia O’Leary welcomed the groups with a talk in the school gym. After the presentation, a music piece written by the music class was played to the parents.

Groups were then led on an organised school tour around our three buildings (the new building opened in 2015) by a teacher and accompanied by a Lasallian Leader.

The groups were given a pumpkin carving demonstration in the

Art room, a sample of a smoothie and homemade buns in the Home Economics room and a Science demonstration. The English teachers spoke about the “Accelerated Reader” in the School Library and our music students performed a song in the Music Room. The modern languages spoke about three languages, French, German and Spanish on offer and Sean Cotter from the Transition Year mini-company “Better Bites” spoke in the Business room. In the Irish room, students and parents participated in an interactive game using iPads and Apple TV.

Tour groups ended with a coffee in the Study Hall where they had an opportunity to speak to Transition Year students, Lasallian Leaders, Green Schools Committee, Sports Mentors and learn about the Erasmus programme. The sports department displayed their gaelic, soccer, rugby, golf and chess trophies while students took part in a maths challenge and learned how to make volcanic cones with the geography teachers. On display were photographs of the School Awards night and the school tours to Germany, France, Italy and England soccer tours.

Fire and Ambulance Development in Africa The Fire and Ambulance Development in Africa (FADA) project that has been going strong since 2010 is ready to celebrate another milestone with the delivery of another container of essential equipment.

Founded by local retired Sub Officer Brendan McCoy Dundalk Fire Service this project assists in the development of Fire and Rescue services in Africa and to date have equipped a region three times the size of Ireland and opened eight fire stations with another five on the way.

This week a container full of medical supplies donated by Medicare Ireland, 40 bicycles and an Ambulance donated

by Cavan Civil Defence along with other rescue supplies are on there way to Benin port and then to the capital of Niger, Niamey. The

forts in giving up their time to service repair and maintain equipment for shipment.

Shortly five more fire engines will be shipped completing the Niger project.

Last year the African community in Ireland awarded the project “The extra mile Essence Award 2016.”

Judge issues bench warrant

A man who didn’t appear at Dundalk District Court was convicted on a charge of drink driving.

Mantas Jurevicius (29) of 43 Clontygora Court, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai at a checkpoint on Hoey’s Lane on May 28, 2016. A breath sample illustrated that while he was over the limit he was entitled to a fixed penalty notice, and while this was issued, it wasn’t paid.

The court heard that he had a previous conviction for being drunk in charge in 2007 and in 2014 was disqualified from driving for five years. As a result he was disqualified at the time of this latest offence.

Judge John Coughlan issued

Driver was found asleep at wheel with engine running A man who was over the legal limit for driving escaped a conviction after his case was dismissed on a technicality.

Kenneth Finnegan (36) of 37 Meadow View, Avondale, Dundalk, who was found asleep at the wheel, argued successfully that the investigating Garda had not given evidence that he formed an opinion of his intent to drive.

Barrister Martin Dully stated that the relevant

act required the Garda to give that evidence and because it was absent the case should be dismissed. Insp Martin Beggy argued that the intent to drive was there as the car was running on a public road.

However, Judge John Coughlan, agreed that the evidence had to be given and as a result dismissed the case.

The driver was slumped across the steering wheel and there was a strong smell of alcohol. He became agitated and began shouting obscenities at Gardai.

He didn’t appear to know where he was and it took a while for him to calm down.

He was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in charge and taken to Dundalk Garda Station where a breath specimen showed he was over the limit.

Four Louth teens graduated from Foróige’s Leadership for Life Programme accredited by the National University of Ireland Galway. Niamh Cannon, Aisling Maher, Jason Nolan and Roisin McArdle were awarded with a Foundation Certificate in Youth Leadership and Community Action in NUIG on October 14.

Victory for Darren at Dundalk Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition was a novel event with each player limited to seven clubs instead of the normal 14 but the lack of firepower didn’t bother 13 handicapper Darren O’Brien who took the overall prize with a magnificent score of 44pts.

O’Brien’s score was four points better than Jim Rowland (12) who edged out Eddie Rogers (3) on countback. Rogers took Category One and his 37pts gross was also the day’s best gross score.

Michael Stewart (13) won Category 2 with 37pts while Paschal Keenan

(15) was the Category 3 winner after posting a score of 38pts.

The remaining internal matchplay competitions have now been decided.

Neil Mullooly won the Junior Scratch competition while Pat Curran won the Intermediate.

Michael McDermott and Paul Morrison won the Men’s Foursomes while Clem Walshe and Oonagh Quinn won the Mixed Foursomes.

The second Last Person Standing competition of the season will start on Saturday October 28. Entries are now being taken in the bar. Cost of entry is €10.

Five months for no insurance

A Dundalk woman who was convicted of driving without insurance for a seventh time was sentenced to five months in prison at Dundalk District Court.

Nora McDonagh of 2 Afton Drive, Greenacres, Dundalk, was also banned from the road for ten years after pleading guilty to the offence on August 27.

Solicitor Dermot Monahan stated that his client would be top of the queue for the proposed new drugs court, and was asked by Judge John Coughlan what that had to do with driving offences.

Mr Monahan stated that the offence was linked to her erratic behaviour that resulted from a drug problem.
