Dundalk deliver for Meals on Wheels
COVID-19 has caused a huge amount of disruptions to schools over the last eighteen months with teachers and students losing numerous days in the classroom since the initial lockdown in March 2020. The Junior Cert exams were cancelled in both 2020 and 2021 while the Leaving Certificate was replaced with calculated grades last year as the virus caused havoc for the educational system. Eighteen months into the pandemic teachers are slightly more positive about the upcoming school year given the fact that the majority of teachers will be vaccinated this time around but teachers unions have reported anxiety amongst many of their pregnant members in particular. St Nicholas’ Monastery National School Principal Katriona Cosgrove is hoping the return to school won’t be as “unpredictable” as last year. Katriona said that she is looking forward to it and hoping that there will be a return to Sean Farrell, President Dundalk Chamber of Commerce, John Hennessy, Chairman of Dundalk Social Service Council-Meals on Wheels and Joanne Duffy, Services Manager for Bus normality. Dundalk rallies to support the Bus Éireann “Fill a Bus” for Meals on Wheels appeal There was a fantastic local response to Bus Éireann’s second annual appeal in support of Meals on Wheels Dundalk last Thursday on the Long Walk, Dundalk. “We are absolutely thrilled with the success of the second Bus Éireann “Fill a Bus” appeal for Dundalk Meals on Wheels,” said
Services Manager for Bus Éireann, Joanne Duffy. “The local community were out in force all day and I’m delighted to say that we received over 2,000 donations, exceeding all our expectations. We are extremely grateful to the people of Dundalk, these donations will be going directly to the people who need them most in
our community”. “The event was an enormous success, due to the kindness of the people of Dundalk who donated so generously to our campaign,” said John Hennessy, Chairman of Dundalk Social Service Council/Meals on Wheels. “We very much appreciate the support for our service and on behalf of all
our Meals on Wheels volunteers I extend our heartfelt thanks.”. Meals on Wheels Dundalk was established in 1972 and supports the vulnerable, elderly and housebound in the area with 240 meals every week. “We are very proud of all our Bus Éireann colleagues and Station Manager Mick McK-

Mixed views as schools get ready to return
“We are still following Covid-19 guidelines and putting measures in place to protect teachers and pupils,” she said. “Everyone seems to be looking forward to it even though the summer flew by. We have to continue with the guidelines and hopefully we will have a full year. As far as the vaccination programme goes, they have made great progress. The majority of teachers are vaccinated and that gives some peace of mind.” She added: “We are hoping to avoid an upset. It would be great if children could be vaccinated too. “People are being more vigilant and I hope all people continue being vigilant. We are starting off on a more positive note than last year. “We know what’s involved and we’ll deal with it better. Hopefully we will have a good year ahead.” Meanwhile, Adrian Kelly, the local representative of the primary school teachers’ union, INTO has urged the government to give unvaccinated pregnant teachers and others who have been unable to get the vaccine the option of working remotely until they are fully immunised. “We have called for the department to engage with these workers directly, to explain and defend the latest public health advice, and in practical terms, to establish a helpline to provide advice directly to affected groups,” said Adrian. “We have also asked for these people to be facilitated fairly with remote working until they have achieved the significant vaccine protection, which has been afforded to all other education workers. Mr Kelly said he knows there are a lot of pregnant teachers who are anxious about having to return to the classroom next week. “There is a lot of worry out there and there are teachers who are in their first trimester due to return to school next week and they are worried about exposure to the virus in crowded classrooms in the early stages of their pregnancy. The government has deemed it safe for them to return but many teachers simply aren’t convinced,” stated Adrian.
eown for lending their support to this worthy cause,” said Services Manager for Bus Éireann, Joanne Duffy. “Bus Éireann connects people to who and what matters to them, we
look forward to continuing this connection with the community here in Dundalk who make up some of the two million passengers that travel with us in the North East every year.”

Garda Tony Golden memorial cycle to take place next month The annual Garda Tony Golden Memorial Cycle will take place between the 11th and 18th of September and once again it will be a virtual challenge with all participants logging their distances on the bike to collectively try and cycle around the world in eight days- a combined total of 40,075km. The aim of the event is to keep the memory of Garda Tony Golden alive whilst also raising funds for local charities in the area. The memorial cycle first took place in 2016 with cyclists including Garda members from Dundalk, Ballina and the Garda cycling club, as well as Tony’s brothers (Dave, Ken and Seán) with all participants taking on a two day 240km journey to Ballina. The cyclists were led by Tony’s brother Sean with Tony’s wife Nicola and children at the start line to see the cyclists off. From 2017 the event has been opened up to the public with the aim of raising money for various local charities chosen by Tony’s wife Nicola. Last year the
event which will take place over eight days between the 11th and 18th of September. “This will be our sixth cycle this year and I suppose the backbone of the event is to keep our friend and colleague Tony Golden’s memory alive while also trying to raise funds for charity. :Last year because of Covid we took a step into the unknown I suppose when we went with a virtual cycle. We didn’t know what kind of response we would get but thankfully we got a great reaction from all over the country with a huge amount of participants in Tony’s home county of Mayo and surrounding counties such as Clare. “This event is for
everybody and any distance you can contribute would help us achieve our goal and also provide financial assistance for the Maria Goretti Foundation Charity. We have various prizes this year for most miles clocked by both male and female as well as top team and a prize every day picked at random for anybody who logs their miles. We will also have a photo competition with a prize for the best pic sent into us while out doing your cycle. Everybody who participates will receive a unique medal and there is also a brilliant early bird prize for those who register before September 5th. Anybody who registers before September 5th will be put into a draw to win a brand new Bianchi road bike. “Hopefully we can get a good response again this year and people will enjoy getting out and clocking up a few kilometres on the bike for a very worthy cause,” stated Aiden. Anybody who would like to take part in the cycle can register online at the following link: www.lh286cycle.com.

Tara claims another All-Ireland title
She’s done it again! Just two weeks after claiming the AllIreland U15 Girls High Jump Title while setting a new Championship record in the process, Tara O’Connor has delivered on the national stage yet again. On Saturday, the All Ireland U14-16 Combined Events Championships took place in Tullamore AC. In a hotly contested U15 Girls Pentathlon, Tara put in a superb day’s work to claim Gold overall and the National Title, with Meabh O’ Connor, also of Dundalk St. Gerard’s picking up Silver! To quote Kellie Harrington, this is the “stuff of dreams” with not just one, but two club athletes claiming the top spots on the National podium in a multi discipline athletics event. The pentathlon is made up of 5 events – Hurdles, Long Jump, Shot Putt, High Jump and 800m – where competitors

battle it out for points accumulated over performances in each of the events. The range of athletic ability required to compete and win over multiple events on the national stage is a testament to just how talented and dedi-
cated these young athletes are. Tara finished the competition with the winning total of 3076 points, with Meabh pushing her all the way, racking up a total point haul of 2928 over the five events.
The members of Dundalk Golf Club recently raised over €7,000 through Captain Trevor Giff’s Charity Day for Research Motor Neurone and Irish Association of Lourdes Volunteers. The €7,270 that was raised on the day was equally divided between the two charities and Captain Trevor Giff presented cheques for €3,635 to representatives of both organisations. “There was a fantastic response to the Charity Day from members and those who sponsored prizes and I am very grateful to them as we raised much needed funds for these two organisations who do brilliant work.” Singer Roy Taylor, who is suffering from Motor Neuron Disease, received the cheque on behalf for Research Motor Neurone and said: “A special thank you to Captain Trevor Giff and all the members and supporters of Dundalk Golf Club for their incred-

The funds raised will go directly to Research Motor Neurone, a worldleading Motor Neurone Disease (MND) research team based in Trinity College Dublin under the leadership of Professor Orla Hardiman. This amazing donation will go directly towards getting another MND sufferer onto upcoming ground-breaking clinical trials here in Ireland. Thanks to your support, you have given an MND sufferer something that is priceless: Hope. From the bottom of our hearts, Thank you all so much. Watch Your Back MND!” Siobhan Rothwell and Beverley Carolan, who received the cheque on behalf of the The Irish Association of Lourdes Volunteers (IALV) said: “We want to express their sincere thanks and
gratitude to Captain Trevor Giff, members and friends of Dundalk Golf Club who invited us to benefit from the funds raised at the recent Captain’s Charity Event. The €3,635 raised for the IALV which will be used to pay for a number of assisted pilgrims to travel to Lourdes, hopefully in 2022. As with all charities, fundraising has been difficult over the last 18 months. However, this incredible donation means we can continue to work towards our goal, to ensure our assisted pilgrims can travel to Lourdes without the burden of cost. On behalf of those assisted pilgrims and all the members of the IALV, thank you for this gift.” The overall winners of the Captain’s Charity Day were Michael Keating’s Team with Noel McGuinness’s team second and Maureen Sheridan’s team third. The best All Ladies team was Mags Coburn’s.

Gum Litter Taskforce Campaign launched Pio Smith, Cathaoirleach, of Louth County Council officially launched the Gum Litter Taskforce’s gum litter education campaign this week. The Gum Litter Taskforce (GLT) is an environmental initiative that was set up to develop and implement an awareness campaign to reduce gum litter in the most sustainable way. Supported and funded by the chewing gum industry, the GLT initiative has made very significant improvements in relation to gum litter awareness over the last 14 years since its inception. The 2019 campaign maintained an all-time high of 93% of people stating that they regard chewing gum as litter, up from 74% when the campaign first began, pointing to the impact which the campaign has had. The campaign is looking to build on the momentum of previous years’ campaigns and is making a strong

return for 2021 after being postponed last year due to COVID-19. This year’s campaign will be different in that the national and local authority launch events will be done virtually, and the campaign will have a stronger social media presence in order to reach a wider and younger audience. Research commissioned by the Gum Litter Taskforce and conducted by Kantar Millward Brown during the 2019 campaign highlighted the campaign’s continued positive effect on people’s behaviour towards gum disposal. In
2019, the results showed that 88% of people said that they always dispose of their gum correctly, which was up from 54% when the campaign first began. Speaking at the launch, Cathaoirleach Pio Smith said “We can never underestimate the pride that people have in their local towns and villages. I am confident that the people throughout Louth will do their town and local community proud by getting behind the Gum Litter Taskforce campaign in an effort to invoke positive change within their local communities.”

Gorey glory for 12-year-old cyclist Rian McCrystal
12-year-old Rian McCrystal showed the competition a clean pair of wheels last weekend as he won both the time trial and road race at the All Ireland Youth Cycling Championships in Gorey. The Dundalk native who will start secondary school in the Marist in a couple of weeks has cycling in his blood given the fact that he is the son of Bryan McCrystal and nephew of Eve McCrystal. Both Bryan
and Eve have enjoyed huge success on the bike over the last number of years and no doubt they have inspired Rian’s love of the sport. Rian began his weekend on Saturday morning by winning the time trial with ease and he followed that success up on Sunday by winning both the road race and the criterium. According to proud Dad Bryan his son is relatively new to the sport and only took it up
due to the lack of football during COVID. “Yeah, we are all really proud of him,” stated Bryan. “His main passion I suppose would have been football before COVID but once that hit he began to go on the bike a bit more and he only had his first road race maybe five weeks ago in Drogheda. We saw the nationals were on in Gorey and he wanted to give them a go and the two of us have been doing some good

training on the mountain bikes over the last few weeks. The conditions on Saturday for the time trial were horrendous with rain pouring down but he coped really well with the conditions and won that pretty well,” explained Bryan. “There were better conditions on Sunday for the road race thankfully and after being close to the front for most of the race he showed great speed to sprint clear in a bunch
finish to win that event too. He rounded off a perfect weekend by winning the criterium around the streets of Gorey and he was delighted with himself coming home with his medals,” “I’m not sure where he gets the speed from because I wouldn’t be the fastest sprinter in the world so maybe that’s from his Mam’s side,” laughs Bryan. “It was a great weekend for him but he’s only

twelve years of age and the most important thing for kids at that age is to make sure they are enjoying it. From personal experience I would be encouraging kids of that age to enjoy playing all the sports they can at that age and not too get too obsessed with just one particular sport. Sport for kids is supposed to be fun and although winning is nice it is not the be all and end all at that age,” Rian McCrystal. stated Bryan.
More needs to be done to deal with water issues—O’Murchú
An ‘overall strategy’ is needed by Irish Water to deal with the ‘recurring problems’ in providing reliable and safe drinking water in Dundalk and North Louth, according to Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú. The Dundalk TD said he had received the update from Irish Water last week announcing mains flushing, but while this ‘is welcome’,
he believes ‘far more needs to be done’. He said: ‘For months now, people in large areas of Dundalk have been dealing with brown water, low water pressure, manganese, water shutoffs and other issues. There are continual issues with burst water mains and other problems in the North Louth area as well. ‘It has been a dreadful few
months for a large number of people in the Dundalk and North Louth areas who have found that they cannot rely on the quality or the pressure of the water coming from their taps. ‘Cllr. Kevin Meenan and I have arranged to meet with Irish Water management in the coming weeks to deal with the problems and to see what long-term solutions are
going to be made available. ‘While the mains flushing news is welcome, Irish Water has to come up with an overall, long-term strategy to deal with the recurring issues in the supply and quality of drinking water in Dundalk. ‘There cannot be shortterm fixes to what are obviously long-term problems and we will be listening to what Irish Water has to say’.

Green church will host the third of four open days on Saturday
This Saturday (28th August) will see St Nicholas’s (Green Church) Churchyard open to the public between 1.30 and 5.30 pm, and at 2.30 there will be a short talk on the history of the churchyard and some of the memorials. The church have already had two well attended open days over the past month and plan on having two more including the upcoming one this weekend. These open days will take place in conjunction with the development of a new website, dundalkchurchyard.ie, which will display first class photographic images of all memorials within the church and churchyard as well as their inscriptions. The website will also carry additional information on some of those individuals and families commemorated in the churchyard, which was closed for burials in 1896. This work has been made possible by the generous funding provided to Dundalk Select Vestry by the EU’s Peace IV Programme, which is managed by the Special EU Programmes Body. Match-funding for the project has been provided by the Executive Office in Northern Ireland and the Department of Rural and Community Development in Ireland. The project forms part of the Small Grants Programme of Louth County Council’s Local Authority Action Plan, which has been managed by Mr Aiden O’Boyle of the LMETB. Most memorials in the churchyard date from between 1750 and 1900, and commemorate many people who were influential in the economic and public life of Dundalk during much of the period from the early 18th century until the early 20th Century Street names commemorating some of these people include Clanbrassil, Jocelyn, Wrightson, Park and Crowe. Everybody is welcome.
Breakfast with the bikers
Are you interested in motorbikes particularly older makes and models? The North-East Section of the “Irish Vintage and Veterans Motorcycle Club” - a group of like minded motorcycle enthusiasts – are looking for new members and a chance to show off their mix of modern and vintage motorcycles. Terry Dullaghan, Dundalk Section Chairman, says, “The club covers an area including Drogheda, and surrounding Counties, but your address is not important, it’s your interest in motorcycling and the enjoyment of owning, riding and maintaining them, that’s our common bond.” The long established club meets once a month to plan “Motorcycle Runs” to various locations of interest, taking routes that are fun to ride on their mix of modern and vintage motorcycles. He says, “We usually have weekend rides but whenever members are available to meet up for a run (including week days) they just make contact and go. When motorcycle restoration or maintenance questions arise by members, there is a wealth of accumulated knowledge to be tapped into in our club that is beyond comparison with any other source.” “To encourage new members and show off our fantastic mix of motorcycles, the club is having a “Recruiting Breakfast” at “The Valley Inn” Mullary, Dunleer, County Louth, A92 W744 on Sunday 29th August at 11.00 am. If a new member completes our membership form and pays the annual club membership fee of €35 they will enjoy a free breakfast.” More details available from tdullagh@ gmail.com or from Terry on 085 1740945.

The aa roadwatch guide to driving in fog By Kieran Hanley, Roadwatch Ireland
Hill Street, Dublin Rd., Dundalk.
It’s important to adapt your driving to whatever weather conditions are at play. Fog can greatly reduce visibility while driving and pose many dangers as a result. In this guide, we’ve laid out the changes you can make to your driving to protect yourself and other road-users when visibility is reduced. Light Up As well as limiting how far ahead you can see, fog also reflects the light from your car’s headlights back at you, causing a glare. For that reason, it’s important to remember not to use your full-beam headlights in fog, as they can actually make it harder to see in front of you. When driving in foggy conditions, use dipped headlights and fog lights. Front fog lights are mounted lower down on your vehicle and point downwards. They reflect light onto the road to avoid it shining directly into fog clouds. Standard headlights aren’t angled downwards, hence the glare. Don’t forget to switch off your fog lights when full visibility has returned though, so that you don’t dazzle other roadusers. If your vehicle doesn’t have fog lights, use your dipped headlights instead.
042 9331515/086 2559201
Slow Down Slowing down is one of the best things you can do to make your journey safer in adverse weather conditions. Reduce your speed when driving through fog, and leave extra time for your journey. Even if you’re in a rush, don’t be tempted to speed up or avoid precautions. Safety first! Before you slow down, make sure to check your mirrors to see if there is another vehicle behind you. If there is, remember that it’s much harder to judge the distance between vehicles in foggy conditions. It’s a good idea to tap your foot brake lightly as you slow down, so that your brake lights can alert the driver behind you. When fog improves during your journey, don’t speed up straight away. In patchy fog you might find yourself in poor conditions again very suddenly. Increase Your Stopping Distance When visibility is reduced, you should also leave more space between you and other road users. As mentioned, fog can make tail-lights seem further away than they actually are, so keeping a safe distance from whoever’s in front is very important. The Rules of the Road handbook suggests that on a dry road with good visibility, two seconds should elapse
between the vehicle in front passing a landmark and you passing that same landmark. This is the time it takes you to say the phrase, ‘only a fool breaks the two second rule’. In foggy conditions you should repeat this phrase 4 or 5 times in order to gauge how far back you should be from whoever’s in front. Listen In very dense fog, it can be a good idea to open your window so that you can listen for other traffic. This can be especially helpful at crossroads and junctions. Also, listen out for the AA Roadwatch traffic reports on the radio. It provides updates on adverse weather conditions and driving advice throughout its bulletins, so keep an ear out and adjust your driving accordingly. Be Extra Mindful of Vulnerable Road Users Don’t forget that drivers have a duty of care towards other road-users, including those more vulnerable, such as pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. If fog is affecting your visibility while driving, look out for pedestrians and cyclists on roadsides and be extra vigilant as you approach pedestrian crossings.`
