An elderly couple in Blackrock were tied up and locked into an upstairs bedroom during an aggravated burglary in Blackrock on Tuesday evening. Two men thought to be in their late teens/early 20’s armed with a knife, hammer and hatchet entered the home of the elderly couple, who are both in their 80’s at approximately 8pm.

The two masked men threatened the couple before locking both the man and the woman into an upstairs bedroom before ransacking the house and departing the scene with cash and a car. The car was later recovered on Seafield Road.

The elderly couple were taken to hospital suffering

from shock. No arrests have been made and investigations are continuing. Investigating Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information to contact Dundalk Garda Station on 0429388400, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station. They are particularly interested to hear from anybody who was in the vicinity of St Francis National School between the hours of 7.30pm and 8.30pm.

Cllr Maria Doyle also called for anybody with information to contact their local garda station whilst also expressing her horror over the incident.

time is an ordeal and I can only imagine how frightened the poor couple must have been when faced with these thugs. To think that somebody could threaten an elderly couple in their 80’s doesn’t

bear thinking about. I believe the incident occurred at around 8pm so I would think there was still some light at that time and the village has been pretty busy recently given the warm weather and

A local boy with a caring spirit has set an example that Teresa May could well follow by negotiating, organising and delivering on time his own version of BrEggs-it.

BrEggs-it – or Bring Eggs to the community – is the brainchild of 11-year-old Déaghlan McGovern, who decided that nobody, no matter what their circumstances, should miss out on an Easter treat.

As a result Déaghlan asked friends, family, neighbours, school mates, scouts and dance group members to donate an Easter egg and an overwhelming response saw him collect 403 eggs which he distributed to 11 groups in the area.

Déaghlan’s proud mother, Sheona, explained that her son came up with the idea himself, did all the hard work and thankfully got a great response.

“Déaghlan is a member of the 2nd Louth Scouts and he wanted to do a community project for charity and he also didn’t want anyone to

“First he got on to family and friends asking them to donate an Easter egg, and the response he got encouraged him to go further so he got leaflets printed up and delivered them to all our neighbours.

school, Friary Boys, also distributed the leaflets and he also gave them to his scout group and Dance Kids where he is also a member,” explained Sheona.

The response was amazing and when Déaghlan began delivering the goods on Thursday, he had 390 in total along with bags

of sweets, bars, biscuits and cakes. Shona pointed out that donations had been made various parts of the country and also from family in Devon who sent 60 eggs.

“It is great to see someone that age thinking about others and this is not the first thing he has done as after making his First Communion he

donated his money to Dundalk Dog Rescue.

He is always thinking of ways he can help people or the environment.

“We are all very proud of him as he did all the work on this himself and is delighted with the response, but he is already planning his next project,” added Sheona.

Caolan returns to a hero’s welcome Caolan Rafferty returned home to Dundalk to a hero’s welcome on Sunday having spent the last two weeks living out a suitcase as he played three tournaments in three countries and emerged with a win, a second and a fourth place.

The win came in the West of Ireland Championship last Sunday week when he became the first player from Dundalk Golf Club to win the event as he added the West to the South of Ireland title he won in Lahinch last year.

He headed straight from the presentation ceremony at Rosses Point to Dublin Airport where the Irish team was gathering ahead of an early morning flight last Monday to Spain for the European Masters in Sotogrande.

Fifteen countries from across the continent teed it up with Ireland looking to lift a title they last held in 2016 while Rafferty and team-mates Conor Purcell, Mark Power and Robert Brazil were also hoping to land the individual honours although Rafferty admitted that was a secondary concern.

“I was only interested in helping the team this week,” said the 26-yearold. “I knew from last year anything under six

As it happened Rafferty finished on eight over after the four rounds of play which was just two shots behind the individual winner Tom Sloman of England. He opened with a four over par 76 and followed that with a 73 and 74 before finishing the tournament with a 73 in round four.

“The course was so tough and Rob Brazil, with a 69 in the last round, was the only player over the four days to shoot a sub-70 round. The wind was up and the pins were hidden on really quick greens. If you missed a green it was so hard to get up and down.

“I got off to a bad start on the first day and was four over after nine. Tiredness definitely kicked in but I tried

to rally back and post a half decent score. I kept telling myself just one more round and managed to cover the back nine in level par for a 76.

“Going into the last round, myself and Conor felt if we posted under par we could win the team event or, at worse, finish second.

Third wasn’t the end of the world but it would have been nice to have finished higher.”

With the Walker Cup selectors watching the action in Spain unfold, Rafferty had the consolation of being the best of the four Irish players as Ireland finished third behind England and were pipped by one shot for second place by Holland.

“From a personal point of view I was delighted to finish fourth in the individual com-

petition after a long few weeks on the road.

It wasn’t the easiest course to come and play after the few weeks I had, playing three tournaments in succession in three different countries.”

Rafferty will now take a well-deserved break and head back to Maynooth University where he has a lot of college work to catch up on. It will also give some time to reflect on the past few weeks.

“I feel really happy with myself that I was competitive at three big tournaments and managed to also get a win. It was tough living out of a suitcase for three weeks so I know now how the pros feel. It’s always good to win one early and follow it up with a decent finish and there’s still plenty of golf to be played this year.”

Community Champions An in-depth look at the inspiration, motivation and driving forces behind some of the organisations supported by Dundalk Credit Union's Community Support Fund in 2019.

St Vincent de Paul, Dundalk

This month marks the 175th year of service of the Society of St Vincent de Paul in Ireland. President Higgins, at their recent Annual Convention in Dublin, praised the work of the Society of St Vincent de Paul which he described as “an exceptional network of solidarity with poorer people across Ireland”.

Dundalk’s Society of St Vincent de Paul has had a presence in the town for almost all of those 175 years. Today they have upwards of 100 volunteers working behind the scenes with compassion and sensitivity to respond to those seeking their help.

A team of volunteers offer direct, personal assistance that is non-judgemental and based on the need of the individual or family. Supports can include friendship and advice, help with money issues, information about other services that might be of help, advocating on behalf of individuals with other support agencies and also negotiating with organisations where monies may be owed.

In addition, they provide a wide range of services for vulnerable people through Dundalk’s SVP shops on Clanbrassil Street, Jocelyn Street and Castletown Road, local offices, shops, resource centres, social housing, daycare and holiday schemes amongst other things.

SVP Daycare services support older people to continue to live independently in their own homes and communities, with a range of social and health supports. Services include cooked meals, social and recreational

activities, self-care services such as showering and laundry facilities.

Kevin Mulligan, Area President Dundalk, says of the commitment of their volunteers “In some cases volunteers have been with the Society for much of their lives, and in many cases, at great personal sacrifice, for at times they ignore the infirmity that comes with age, and at times sickness, to attend their weekly meetings so that they can undertake the necessary visitations. The volunteers respond to these demands with great compassion, dedication and trust. They are ordinary people, doing extraordinary things.”

Dundalk Simon is a non-profit, registered charitable organisation located in Dundalk. They provide safe, supportive shelter and services for people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. The reach of Dundalk Simon includes Louth, Monaghan and Cavan.

Dundalk Simon was founded on January 31st 1973, beginning with a soup run. In September 1973, a small two room premises on Francis Street was opened as a Friendship Centre, providing an evening meal and a social space for Dundalk’s homeless.

Now over 40 years later, Dundalk Simon has expanded its services to include a 30 Bed Hostel, 5 long-term beds and 12 transitional homes.

Their Day Centre in Seatown houses all administrative staff and offers a comprehensive Activities Programme that includes gardening, furniture restoration and art classes. Service users can also avail of a hot meal, watch TV, use a computer or just socialise. An important element of The Day Centre is the provision of an aftercare base for people who have left the service or those vulnerable in our community who may be lonely and in need of company.

Yvonne Carr, Dundalk Simon said “At Dundalk Simon we need to nurture the health and wellbeing of our service users just as much as dealing with the immediate issues that homelessness presents. With the help of the Dundalk Credit Union we can invest in items like starter packs for tenants moving from emergency accommodation to transition housing, all working towards

successful independence for those in our care.”

Dundalk Simon Community is part subsidised by state funding. The Simon Shop on Yorke Street is the biggest source of income for Dundalk Simon Community after state funding. The shop is opened throughout the week, staffed by a team of volunteers and community workers. All monies raised from the shop go directly to help service users.

Dundalk Simon relies heavily on fundraising and the goodwill of our community. Upcoming fundraising events include Dundalk Simon Community's Quiz Night in the Century Bar at 8pm on Friday 17th May. Table of four is €40, music, prizes and a raffle on the night. The Annual Church Gate Collection, which is a huge fundraising event nationally, takes place across all churches in Louth on Saturday 8th June and Sunday 9th June 2019.

in Brief Festival to take place this summer Poet’s Sunday

Family, friends and fans will come together on Sunday April 28 to celebrate the life and works of celebrated local poet, Jim Craven, known as the Bard of Balregan and Laurette of Louth.

Following the success of Little Road Production’s new documentary on the poet, broadcast on LMFM on Easter Monday past, the Jim Craven Commemorative Committee will gather, for the 39th year, to commemorate the poet at his graveside in Bridge-ACrinn, this coming Sunday, 28thApril, after 10am Mass.

All are welcome to throw poetry at the wind and pollinate the surrounding countryside with verse.

Woman Had No Insurance

Lorraine Kearney (45) of 17 Clan Chulainn Park, Farndreg Est, Dundalk was fined €75 after pleading guilty to a charge of driving without insurance at Dundalk District Court.

The mother of six was stopped by Gardai at Hoey’s Lane on April 29 last year.

The inaugural Táin International Hillwalking Festival will take place this summer around the beautiful Cooley peninsula and surrounding areas. The event takes place on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd of June and will be tied in with the annual Táin march as well as the Legends of Louth festival.

According to Jock McArdle who is one of the organisers of the event the whole idea of the project is to boost tourism in County Louth and showcase the beautiful scenery we have to offer.

“We have purposely organised the event to take place in early June so that it coincides with the Táin march and Legends of Louth festivals.

The idea is to make it a weekend that is appealing to tourists and show off the magnificent views and scenery we have to offer up on the Cooley mountains.

outside the County would they ever consider coming to Louth for a weekend or for a short holiday the general answer you get is ‘sure what is there to do in Louth?’ With this festival we are hoping to show off what I consider to be one of the most beautiful areas in the country. Obviously this is our first year doing it but we are hopeful that this will become in time an annual event that people from both home and abroad will come and take part in.

“We have different grades of walks which will suit all types of walkers and levels of fitness. Grade 1 is just

over 16km and you will climb to a height of 686m. Grade two is 11.5km up to a height of 458m while grade three is a more leisurely 9.7km reaching a height of 382m. You will walk through the beautiful Cooley peninsula and mountains and you will be led by experienced leaders.

“We are tying in with the Legends of Louth festival on the Saturday and after the walk there will be buses transporting people back to the square in Dundalk for an event of music and special events for all the family.

On the Sunday walkers will meet up with

the Táin March in the Cooley mountains and proceed to The Bush where there will be after walk festivities including battle re-enactments and a meal,” explained Jock.

Registration for the event will take place in the Dundalk Tourist Office between 8am and 9am on June 1. Tea and biscuits will be served at registration. All buses depart at 9am to take walkers to their starting point at The Lumpers.

The cost is €10 per day or €15 for two days.

This includes transport to and from the walks.

A man who had a drink driving charge struck out at Dundalk District Court was fined €40 after pleading guilty to driving without insurance.

Sean McCabe (59) of 16 Doolargy Ave, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai at Blackrock Road, Haggardstown, on May 5 last year and was subsequently charged with drink driving.

MacGuill stated that the Garda statement revealed that the investigating Garda had intended to issue a fixed charge penalty notice due to the level of alcohol, but it wasn’t sent out.

Insp Brendan Keane stated that it was the Garda’s intention to issue the notice but as a licence had not been produced this course of action was not pursued. After he conceded

that the Garda was not in court to give this evidence, Judge John Coughlan struck the matter out.

The court heard that Mr McCabe had two previous convictions for no insurance and the defence solicitor stated that his client was not currently driving, nor had he any intention of driving, he didn’t want to be disqualified.

Judge Coughlan imposed a €40 fine.

DkIT shines a spotlight on gender equality

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has commenced its preparations to submit an application for the Athena SWAN Bronze Award - the gender quality benchmark - to the Advance Higher Education’s (HE) Gender Equality Charters Team.

The submission is an institution-wide initiative led by the Research Office at DkIT. In March the Institute appointed an Athena SWAN project co-ordinator, Ciara O’Shea who will coordinate efforts on behalf of the institute.

The Athena SWAN Charter was established in 2005

to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in higher education and research.

In May 2015 the charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL), and in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students.

The charter now recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.

Speaking today, DkIT President, Michael Mulvey, Phd said, “The Athena SWAN Charter demonstrates commitment to gender equality and excellent working practices. Inclusive employers are able to recruit from the widest possible pool while well-supported staff are more likely to choose stay with DkIT, regardless of their gender. DkIT is deeply committed to advancing the equality agenda in Higher Education today and we hope Athena SWAN will bring about a long term culture change that will DkIT Gender Equality With Preparation for Athena benefit all staff.”

Gerry Adams said that two weeks ago he met a family in mid Louth that was living under constant threat of violence following their refusal to hand money over to drugs gangs.

“Following this meeting I raised the issue of drug related intimidation with the Justice Minister and I demanded that Gardaí in Louth be provided with the resources to protect this

family and address the drugs epidemic in the county.

“I wish to commend the work of An Garda Síochána in Louth and I again call on the Justice Minister to allocate the appropriate resources to deal with this.

“I have also asked him to introduce or support legislation to ensure proof of identity will be required in the purchase of mobile phones as this

is the method of communication used in this intimidation,” stated Mr Adams.

Councillor Ruairí Ó Murchú added: “I have been liaising with the Gardaí in Louth on the issue of intimidation of families by drugs criminals for some time now.

“These gangs are targeting the family members of people they deem to owe drug debts.

“I have dealt with nu-

merous families across Mid Louth and Dundalk who have endured intimidation and attack.

“In some cases families have feared for their lives due to a consistent campaign of intimidation by gang members.

“An Garda Síochána have stated that today’s operation occurred as part of an ongoing investigation into drug related intimidation in the Drogheda and mid-

SARAH McGovern, model and ambassador of An Taisce’s National Spring Clean campaign, joined the friends and neighbours of Carlingford to kick off their clean-up plan for the year. Louth County Council is encouraging community groups from all over Louth to Love Where You Live and register for this year’s campaign.

Now in its 21st year, the National Spring Clean campaign is Ireland’s largest anti-litter initiative and each year throughout

April, over half a million people take part in over 5,000 clean-ups across the country.

Grace McHale, secretary of Carlingford Tidy Towns, said “We are delighted to have Sarah here today to support the work we do and our National Spring Clean Campaign. The people of Carlingford definitely love where they live. This year, we would urge anyone who has never taken part in our Tidy Town events before, to join their community, neighbours

and friends and get involved. We would love to see a surge in the numbers of volunteers taking part in this worthwhile campaign.”

All volunteers registering for the National Spring Clean campaign are issued with a free clean up kit which contains information, posters, colour-coded refuse sacks for segregation of waste materials, protective gloves and tabards to keep participants clean.

A WOMAN who was over the limit for driving escaped a conviction at Dundalk District Court after Garda evidence failed to give a time of driving on the day she was arrested.

Evidence was given that the Garda who attended the scene of a traffic accident at Dromad

on June 4 last year spoke to Melissa McGuinness (31) of 7 Bernish Crescent, Cloghogue, Newry who admitted driving the car.

He noticed a smell of alcohol from Ms McGuinness’s breath and she subsequently failed a roadside breath test at 3.40am

before being arrested and taken to Dundalk Garda Station where a test revealed she was over the limit.

Barrister Martin Dully stated that there was no evidence given of the time of driving and Judge John Coughlan struck the matter out.

Cycling Without Age launched by Cllr Maeve Yore

Cycling Without Age was launched by Independent councillor Maeve Yore in Dundalk last week.

The launch took place at the Louth Age Friendly Conference where Clara Clarke from ‘Cycling Without Age’ was in attendance.

The initiative was first launched by Clara and her husband Charles in Dublin two years ago and the basic idea sees cyclists from local cycling clubs volunteer their time to act as a pilot on a specially designed rickshaw which is used to take senior citizens for a spin. Cllr Yore came across the Clara and Charles’ idea on facebook and immediately set about trying to introduce the scheme to Dundalk.

“Sometimes I love my Job and know I have made a positive difference and impact in my county,” stated Maeve. Today at the

Louth Age Friendly County Conference - after working on it for fifteen months with Rodd Bond Netwell Casala, Jason Devine DKIT and Clara Clark - we launched 3 trishaws in Louth for Cycling Without Age-Ireland (CWA) “CWA was brought to Ireland by the inspirational Clara in Blackrock Dublin and I saw it on CWA Irl facebook page in Jan last year. There are now 20 trishaws in 9 Counties across Ireland. CWA trishaws bring nursing home/ care centre residents out for spins in the fresh air forging friendships between them and the volunteer pilots.

I approached Cuchulainn Cycling Club and asked them would their cyclists be willing to become volunteer pilots. Without hesitation they contacted members and I received great

support and encouragement from them.

We received funding to buy the bikes from the Healthy Irl Fund, Louth Age Friendly and my councillor allocation funds. We have approached nursing homes and care facilities across our county who are as excited as we are to get this project up and running.

Louth WATCH club have also volunteered to become pilots and over the coming weeks training will be offered. I want to acknowledge and thank Rodd, Jason, Clara, Cuchulainn for believing in me and my idea. Beautifully Broken Exhibition A local Mental Health Awareness campaigner is about to showcase her ‘Beautifully Broken’ Project at an exhibition in the community rooms at the Longwalk Shopping Centre.

Brittany McEnteggart is originally from New Jersey but has been living in Dundalk for almost nine years. The 27-year old began the project back in 2015 with the aim of raising suicide and mental health awareness. She was moved to do something positive on the subject having seen at first hand the trail of damage and heartache that those left behind after a suicide can feel.

“I started The Beautifully Broken Project in 2015 for Suicide & Mental Health awareness. It all began when I was in the Photographic Studies course in O Fiaich College where we were doing a course with Ken Finnegan. We were asked to take a series of images for an end of year exhibition with the idea being that they should be something that we had a deep passion for.

“I chose to go down the suicide/mental health route as unfortunately I have first hand experience of these issues. My Dad and a couple of my friends have all taken their own lives and obviously these events had a deep effect on me. From that end of year college exhibition the ‘Beautifully Broken’ project was born and I have been growing it year on year ever since.

“I’m very proud of the project and I know that it has helped a lot of people cope with the loss of loved ones or get them through some bad times. When somebody comes forward to ask about my project I meet up with them and I ask them to pick a location that is special to them. They then send me their story in relation to mental health and I will put both their story and the photo up online and hopefully somebody else will see it and can show them that other people are going through the same thing as them.

“I am very passionate about this subject and my aim is to keep on growing this project and help as many people as I can. There isn’t enough done about mental health issues that is why people are afraid to speak about it. Suicide is a huge issue not only in Dundalk but all across the world

and this is why now I feel it is important to keep on working on my project and encourage people to talk about their issues. I am very excited about my upcoming exhibition which begins in a couple of weeks and I look forward to meeting and speaking with people who attend.

The Beautifully Broken Project mental health photography exhibition will tell the story of those affected by mental health and suicide. All are welcome to attend the opening night on Thursday 2nd of May at 5pm in the community room at the Longwalk Shopping Centre. The exhibition will also run on Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th of May. Success for Dundalk’s Irish dancers Dundalk Leader 25th April 2019

Dundalk’s Irish dancers did themselves and their town proud once again as they returned from the World Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina with medals and globes aplenty.

Dervla Mackin and Nicola McGee from the McGee school of Irish dance were delighted with their six dancers who all returned home with a prize. The big winner from Greensboro was fourteenyear old Elliot Kwelele from Rockfield Manor who returned home as U14 World Champion.

It’s been a fantastic year for Elliot who also won the All Ireland’s recently as well. The U14 section had a particularly Dundalk feel to it with the talented Oisin Duffy from Scoil Rince Mona NíRodaigh finishing just behind Elliot in third place.

According to Dervla all of the six dancers who qualified for the World Championships did themselves and the school proud.

“We are delighted with all our dancers with everyone of them doing brilliantly. They all came home with a prize which is just reward for all the hard work they put in, noted Dervla.

Elliot can now call himself a World Champion which is a huge achievement for him. We also had Rachel Lee who came 7th in the U11 section and Eva Nicole Loy who came twelfth also in the U11’s. Those two girls should be very proud of themselves. Emily Duffy was brilliant in the U12 section where she finished eleventh. And finally we had Sarah Lee (U13) and Abby Dunne (U16) who got call backs and received a medal.

Meanwhile there was also plenty of success for Dundalk’s Scoil Rince Móna Ní Rodaigh as the ‘Red Army’ swept the boards yet again another incredible haul of medals and trophies.

Easter week saw thousands of dancers from across the globe descend on North Carolina’s Koury Convention Centre for a weeklong feast of Irish dancing from the best in the business. As it’s necessary to qualify through regionals to compete at the event, even just getting there is no mean feat and Mona’s “Red Army” didn’t disappoint.

With 28 qualifiers in solo dancing and 8 Céilí teams competing

the school had been hard at work for the previous six months but thankfully the hard work paid off when they brought home 2 World Titles, 7 World ‘Globes’ and 85 medals, cementing the school’s status once more as one of the world’s finest.

The week got off to an amazing start with the u11 Mixed Ceili being crowned World Champions on Palm Sunday and our Senior Mixed Céilí successfully defended their 2018 title and were World Champions on Easter Sunday beating an incredible field of competition from the USA, Australia, Canada, the UK and around the world.

“We are completely exhausted but beyond thrilled” says Mona “the dancers and teachers at the school work long hours, often late into the night” to be the best they possibly can but it all comes down to the performance on the day. We’re just so blessed that the hard work paid off and they did us all so proud.”

the ceili globe haul to 5. The u11 girls team were thrilled to place 5th and the u16 girls brought home an impressive 6th place in a field of almost 100 teams from all over the world.

Mona’s own grandchildren Katie & Oisin Lennon each excelled in their own age categories. Oisin joined fellow Dundalkian Elliot on the podium celebrating 3rd place in the U14 boys. Katie beat almost 200 girls U17 and held on to her 5th consecutive world medal, placing 15th. Both making Nana Mona incredibly proud in the process.

Gareth O’Connor (u18) retained his ‘World Globe’ for the third consecutive year by placing 3rd and Niamh Muldowney rounded out the solo medals with a fabulous 9th place finish U23.

This year saw a new system of ‘heats’ come into play where dancers had to compete over two days instead of the customary one.

Our Semi finalists were: Olivia Sewell u20, Caitlin Clarke & Rioghnach Brogan U21 and Deirbhile Mack U23.

“It really was a fantastic week” says Mona. “Many schools dream of bringing one such award home from the World Championshipswe are blessed to have a very talented group of dancers in our school who are willing to put the work in and do what it takes to become champions”.

“The standard of Céili competitions at the World this year was phenomenal- they get better year on year and we just have to keep working harder to maintain our own high standards” says Móna.

“We had some incredible results and are very proud of these dancers, all of whom make great sacrifices to commit to their teams year on year.”

This year proved to be a tougher journey to the World Championships as the great distance meant a huge amount of fundraising on the part of the school. Each dancer participated in events over the course of almost a year to ensure

they could be part of the team going to Greensboro.

“We were very proud of our ‘Red Army’ and how well they did in North Carolina” says Mona. “We’re actually quite a small school in the grand scheme of things but we dream bighave done for nearly 50 years! I couldn’t do any of this without the help of my two daughters, Ciara & Dearbhla who have been teaching with me for many years. Their energy, enthusiasm and passion for dancing is what keeps the Red Army marching! We’re blessed too to have some loyal and talented former students join the team in recent months- it’s a wonderful thing to pass my passion for our beautiful artform to the next generation and I’m delighted that the legacy continues. A huge debt of gratitude also goes to those who helped our dancers in any way to achieve their goals. We thank you all”.

DkIT Hosts North East Rural Conversation with Royal Irish Academy Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) recently facilitated a ‘Rural Conversation’ in conjunction with the Royal Irish Academy aimed at examining ways of enhancing social cohesion among communities in rural Ireland.

The consultative rural stakeholder event was the second of three Rural Conversations, hosted in three Higher Education Institutions around the island of Ireland. More than 70 representatives attended the event including academics, local government, policy experts and representatives from rural communities across the North Leinster South Ulster region. Outputs from the event have been used to help to inform the development of future Government policy on rural development in Ireland.

by Dr Michael Mulvey, President, DkIT. During his opening address he stated that the topic of social cohesion is very relevant to a college like DkIT.

During her presentation, Colette highlighted the role of Higher Education in supporting rural communities including skills provision, particularly in the areas of business, manufacturing, agri-food and veterinary. She also highlighted the importance of schools outreach and the promotion of new programme areas such a robotics and data science in ensuring that we meet the skills requirements for our communities in the future.
